1. Comparing Conformance Checking for Decision Mining: An Axiomatic Approach

Abstract

Process mining uses historical executions of business processes (as recorded in an event log) to uncover and describe the process’ behaviour as a process model. The goal of conformance checking is to ensure that the model is of high quality and is a good representation of the event log, thus assuring the model is a solid foundation for subsequent analysis of the process. To date, few conformance checking approaches have considered model quality beyond what is determined by the execution order of process activities. In data-aware process models, which are generated by decision mining techniques, process activities are annotated with conditions to represent the decision-making of a process. Such models are more expressive than those that represent only process activities. With the current notions of conformance checking, it is unclear what properties determine the quality of these data-aware process models. To address this gap, we introduce desirable properties, as axioms, for conformance checking of data-aware models. Our contribution is threefold: i) we present a generalisation that abstracts from the representation of data-aware models, ii) we present nine axioms of desirable properties for data-aware conformance checking, and iii) we define two measures for model recall and precision. Using our axioms as a yardstick, we compare our proposed recall and precision measures with existing measures. Our experimental results show that existing measures exhibit limited adherence to our axioms; while, our two proposed measures exhibit high adherence to our axioms.

Abstract

The risk posed by wildlife to air transportation is of great concern worldwide. In Australia alone, 17,336 bird-strike incidents and 401 animal-strike incidents were reported to the Air Transport Safety Board (ATSB) in the period 2010-2019. Moreover, when collisions do occur, the impact can be catastrophic (loss of life, loss of aircraft) and involve significant cost to the affected airline and airport operator (estimated at globally US$1.2 billion per year). On the other side of the coin, civil aviation, and airport operations have significantly affected bird populations. There has been an increasing number of bird strikes, generally fatal to individual birds involved, reported worldwide (annual average of 12,219 reported strikes between 2008-2015 being nearly double the annual average of 6,702 strikes reported 2001-2007) (ICAO, 2018). Airport operations including construction of airport infrastructure, frequent take-offs and landings, airport noise and lights, and wildlife hazard management practices aimed at reducing risk of birdstrike, e.g., spraying to remove weeds and invertebrates, drainage, and even direct killing of individual hazard species, may result in habitat fragmentation, population decline, and rare bird extinction adjacent to airports (Kelly T, 2006; Zhao B, 2019; Steele WK, 2021). Nevertheless, there remains an imperative to continually improve wildlife hazard management methods and strategies so as to reduce the risk to aircraft and to bird populations. Current approved wildlife risk assessment techniques in Australia are limited to ranking of identified hazard species, i.e., are ‘static’ and, as such, do not provide a day-to-day risk/collision likelihood. The purpose of this study is to move towards a dynamic, evidence-based risk assessment model of wildlife hazards at airports. Ideally, such a model should be sufficiently sensitive and responsive to changing environmental conditions to be able to inform both short and longer term risk mitigation decisions. Challenges include the identification and quantification of contributory risk factors, and the selection and configuration of modelling technique(s) that meet the aforementioned requirements. In this article we focus on likelihood of bird strike and introduce three distinct, but complementary, assessment techniques, i.e., Algebraic, Bayesian, and Clustering (ABC) for measuring the likelihood of bird strike in the face of constantly changing environmental conditions. The ABC techniques are evaluated using environment and wildlife observations routinely collected by the Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) wildlife hazard management team. Results indicate that each of the techniques meet the requirements of providing dynamic, realistic collision risks in the face of changing environmental conditions.

Abstract

BackgroundPre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is efficacious in reducing HIV acquisition. For some gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), daily ongoing PrEP may be unsuitable for use as a long-term prevention strategy because of episodic risk, cost issues, or concerns about the biological consequences of medication.SettingThis study evaluated the feasibility of short-term, fixed-interval episodic PrEP (Epi-PrEP) for use among vacationing MSM. We describe the feasibility of implementing a clinic-based Epi-PrEP pilot program for 48 MSM who reported occasional condomless sex and anticipated a defined high-risk time.MethodsThis was a nonrandomized naturalistic study of an observational clinical intervention. The primary outcome assessed was adherence, as measured by self-report and plasma tenofovir levels.ResultsOf 54 MSM who enrolled in the study, 48 completed the 3-month visit. The majority (93.7%) had tenofovir concentrations consistent with daily use on returning from vacation. Almost 3/4 reported condomless sex during vacation, and about 1/3 reported recreational drug use. During the 3-month follow-up, 1 participant had become HIV-infected because of a lapse in continued access to the PrEP after study. Although adverse events were common, none were serious. More than 70% of participants indicated an interest in daily ongoing PrEP use.ConclusionsEpi-PrEP was well tolerated by at risk MSM in this study, with high levels of medication adherence. Many participants felt the experience of initiating PrEP while on vacation could be a means for transition to long-term PrEP use.

Abstract

In process mining, computational processing of sequential data allows the discovery and analysis of processes followed by organisations. These can be either explicitly understood processes, captured in documents or rules, or implicit process paths known in more informal or emergent ways. This paper examines a long-lived institution of historical interest, the Qing (1644-1911) Chinese civil service, using data assembled by historians on civil officials during the 19th century. Mapping the promotion process by following paths of officials through civil service postings helps illuminate the everyday operation of the institution and the society around it. Two distinctive features of this data set are that it records states, not events, and careers often include holding multiple concurrent roles. The combination is a poor match for existing process discovery techniques. We describe this structure as a state snapshot log, and present a new discovery technique, the State Snapshot miner, for constructing stochastic Petri net models from such logs. A case study shows its use in analysing promotion paths for elite graduates in the Qing civil service. © 2023 IEEE.

Abstract

Abstract When operating in space, on-board Silicon Geiger-Mode Avalanche Photodiodes (GM-APDs) are exposed to radiation damage that result in an increase in dark count rates. Thermal annealing has been found to mitigate the damage, although prior studies have largely focused on annealing following a single session of proton irradiation. This work reports that thermal annealing can be performed simply with the built-in thermo-electric coolers of the GM-APDs. Annealing was also done in 10 min intervals for a clearer view of the recovery curve. Mitigation of damage from repeated $$\gamma $$ γ radiation was observed from the: (1) halving of the increase in dark count rates on average and (2) outperformance of room temperature annealing ( $$25\,^{\circ }$$ 25 ∘ C) by 33 $$\%$$ % . Additionally, we show that heavy doses of $$\gamma $$ γ radiation (21 krad) have a probability of causing Random Telegraph Signals in GM-APDs that can be suppressed by lowering the operating temperature.

Abstract

Abstract Nasal respiratory disorders are linked to craniofacial anomalies and systemic dysfunctions. However, the implications of nasal respiratory disorders on brain development and their subsequent impact on brain functionalization remain largely unknown. Here, we describe that nasal obstruction from postnatal developmental stages in mice precipitates deficits in cerebellum-associated behaviors and compromised refinement and maturation of neural circuits in the cerebellum. We show that mice with nasal obstruction during developmental phases exhibit marked impairments in motor function and exhibit increased immobility time in forced swimming test. Additionally, we identified critical periods during which nasal respiration is essential for optimizing motor function and preserving mental health. Our study also reveals that nasal obstruction in mice disrupts the typical developmental process of synapse elimination in the cerebellum and hinders the normal transition of activity patterns in cerebellar Purkinje cell populations during development. Through comparing activity patterns in mouse models subjected to nasal obstruction at various stages, we suggest that the maturation of specific activity pattern among Purkinje cell populations is fundamental to the functional integrity of the cerebellum. Our findings highlight the indispensable role of adequate nasal respiration during development for the establishment and functional integrity of neural circuits, thereby significantly affecting brain function.
