Modular integrated construction (MiC) is an innovative construction method that is widely used in practice, but high transportation cost is an obstacle to its wider implementation. This paper is motivated by the real-world need for a scientific approach for MiC transport scheduling, and addresses the practical problem of how to achieve on-time door-to-door MiC delivery in an economical manner. An innovative integer programming model is formulated with the objective of minimising the total transportation costs, including trailer rental, fuel costs, and worker salaries. A case study based on Hong Kong data validates that the developed model can be efficiently solved for problems of practical size. The results also demonstrate that the derived MiC schedule plan can reduce transportation costs by 58.7% compared with a just-in-time (JIT) strategy, thus bringing great economic benefits to off-site construction practitioners. Useful managerial implications related to on-site MiC storage areas are derived through sensitivity analysis. Overall, this paper sets the ground for the application of mathematical programming methodology to the off-site construction field. Tensor algebra operations such as contractions in computational chemistry consume a significant fraction of the computing time on large-scale computing platforms. The widespread use of tensor contractions between large multi-dimensional tensors in describing electronic structure theory has motivated the development of multiple tensor algebra frameworks targeting heterogeneous computing platforms. In this paper, we present Tensor Algebra for Many-body Methods (TAMM), a framework for productive and performance-portable development of scalable computational chemistry methods. TAMM decouples the specification of the computation from the execution of these operations on available high-performance computing systems. With this design choice, the scientific application developers (domain scientists) can focus on the algorithmic requirements using the tensor algebra interface provided by TAMM, whereas high-performance computing developers can direct their attention to various optimizations on the underlying constructs, such as efficient data distribution, optimized scheduling algorithms, and efficient use of intra-node resources (e.g., graphics processing units). The modular structure of TAMM allows it to support different hardware architectures and incorporate new algorithmic advances. We describe the TAMM framework and our approach to the sustainable development of scalable ground- and excited-state electronic structure methods. In modular integrated construction (MiC), the resource allocation problem (RAP) adopted by construction sites and vehicle routing problem (VRP) adopted by logistics companies are highly interdependent. However, this interdependence has been overlooked in the literature. Thus, the plans determined by each problem cannot be achieved practically. Moreover, there is no existing VRP model suitable for the MiC application. This study aims to propose a VRP model suitable for MiC, investigate the interdependence between the RAP and proposed VRP model, and develop a blockchain system to secure information sharing between the RAP and VRP. The first two objectives are achieved by developing a coordinated system formulated as a leader-follower Stackelberg game model (LFSGM). This model is presented as a bi-level optimisation model and solved using a nested ant colony optimisation-based algorithm. The effectiveness of the LFSGM is validated using a real case study. The results show that using the traditional approach (i.e. a separate RAP and proposed VRP) succeeds in providing a plan for the construction sites but not for the logistics company. In recent years, network science has received significant attention and application. As an important mesoscale structure of networks, community structure reveals the inherent modular structure and potential functionality of networks. Therefore, maintaining the community structure during attacks is crucial. Existing studies on community robustness primarily focus on two attack behaviors: malicious attacks and random failures. However, little is known on the community robustness in the more practical situations where the attackers have limited ability to access precise network information, leading to gray information attack behaviors. Hence, in this paper, we investigate the robustness of network communities under gray information attacks and the enhancing algorithms. Following the community robustness measure for the sequential attacks, we establish a unified evaluation framework for attacks with gray information by introducing a gray attack coefficient, which treats the usual random failures and malicious attacks as the two special situations in the proposed framework. Several enhancing algorithms with local search strategy are exquisitely devised. The efficacy of our framework and algorithms which significantly improve the community robustness against gray attacks is demonstrated by the experimental results on a variety of real-world networks. Our findings have important implications not only in enhancing the community robustness of existing networks but also in designing robust ones from the scratch, which paves the way to further understand and seek strategies and solutions for network community robustness with gray information. The aim of this paper is to transfer the restrictedness theory to Hom-Lie algebras. The concept of restricted Hom-Lie algebras, which is introduced in [S. Bouarroudj and A. Makhlouf, Hom-lie superalgebras in characteristic 2, Mathematics 11 2023, 24, Paper No. 4955], will be used in this paper. First, the existence and uniqueness of p-structures on a Hom-Lie algebra is studied. Then the definition of a restrictable Hom-Lie algebra is given and the equivalence relation between restrictable Hom-Lie algebras and restricted Hom-Lie algebras is constructed. Precast construction offers multiple benefits, encompassing heightened productivity, an enhanced working environment, and significant waste reduction. Timely delivery of precast components (PCs) is of paramount importance in the successful execution of construction projects, mainly because processes involving precast prefabrication are identified frequently as critical activities in the majority of cases. However, current scheduling models for precast production need to meet the demands of dynamic environments in which construction projects contend with uncertainties. Consequently, it is essential to investigate and develop more-resilient and flexible scheduling approaches to address these challenges effectively and guarantee the timely delivery of precast components in these dynamic construction scenarios. To address these challenges, this study introduces an approach that integrates precast tracking, positioning, progress monitoring, and analysis among the multiple stages undertaken by project communities. Each component's status is updated dynamically in the cloud-based Building Information Modeling (BIM) platform using radio-frequency identification (RFID) and ultrawideband (UWB) technologies. Moreover, the collected data are updated to a dynamic production planning engine to be analyzed more accurately and flexibly for prefabrication, fitting-out, installation resources, workerpower planning, scheduling, and execution. To verify the efficiency of the proposed system, on-site testing was performed on a prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (PPVC) residential building project. The findings show that a precast component can be tracked precisely on-site and that the sensor network can deliver trustworthy data. This research adopted an innovative and comprehensive methodology, centering on the transmission of real-time data collected via RFID and UWB sensing to enable dynamic scheduling in precast construction. By facilitating dynamic planning, scheduling, optimization, and progress monitoring, the study introduces a paradigm shift in construction project management, markedly improving the efficiency and effectiveness of project execution. Practical Applications: Precast construction, known for its efficiency and sustainability, faces a key challenge in ensuring the timely delivery of precast components. This is crucial because PCs assembly often represents critical activities in construction projects. Current scheduling engines struggle to adapt to the unpredictable nature of construction environments, which frequently deal with uncertainties. This study presents an innovative approach that integrates tracking, positioning, and progress monitoring of PCs using advanced technologies. By employing radio-frequency identification and ultrawideband sensors, PCs' status is updated in real-time on a cloud-based Building Information Modeling platform. These data are uploaded into a dynamic production scheduling engine, enhancing the accuracy and flexibility of scheduling and execution, especially for prefabrication and installation stages. Tower crane layout planning (TCLP) is key to ensure the safety and productivity of construction projects. Previous studies on TCLP mainly focused on the typical in situ construction method, however, overlooking modular integrated construction (MiC). This study aims to develop an integrated planning approach for optimizing the locations of tower cranes and trucks for MiC across the entire construction site. This approach consists of four objective components. First, identifying potential locations for cranes and trucks by adopting a gridding method and an intersection examination algorithm. Second, estimating the crane operation duration. Third, optimizing the crane and truck locations by developing an integer linear programming (ILP) model while considering various constraints, such as the demand fulfillment, the crane's lifting capacity, and the multiple truck parking areas. Lastly, optimizing the distance between cranes to avoid crane blocking on site. The proposed approach is validated via three high-rise residential MiC projects. The results achieve 19.4%–37.9% reductions in cranes' operation durations, as well as carbon emissions from the original plan. Compared with another existing TCLP method made from limited predefined layout plans, a 29.4% improvement is observed. Moreover, three aspects to extend the application of the approach are discussed: (1) the multiple tower crane layout scenario, (2) the impact of the number of truck points, and (3) the trade-offs between computing effectiveness and performance. The approach realizes the objective of TCLP decision-making for multi-crane multitruck MiC throughout the whole construction site. We will apply methods due to Brian Conrad to the situation of modular forms of even weight and level Γ (N p r) over Q p (ζ N p r ) to obtain an upper bound for the exponent. We also use Klein forms to construct explicit modular forms of level p r whenever p r > 3 , allowing us to compute a lower bound which agrees with the upper bound. Designing a fully modular building, which is without the support of any separate lateral resisting elements, has the advantage of rapid site assembly, but runs the risk of a brittle style of connection failures in a rare earthquake event. Thus, this form of construction is currently limited to low-rise buildings. Isolating the building from its base and allowing the rocking motion to occur has been proven to be effective in dissipating energy and prolonging the natural periods by the lifting of the structure, thereby alleviating high strength demand on the building itself. To avert overturning, the amount of the rotation of the building needs to be controlled, and the use of superelastic tendons as a restraint is a promising solution. Previous studies into the seismic performance with this novel form of construction have been limited to experimenting with a rigid block or a single lumped mass system. In this study, this approach of seismic isolation is extended to a high-rise modular building with distributed mass and stiffness. A scaled-down model of a 19-story fully modular building, which was partially restrained by superelastic tendons, was tested on a shaking table. The key objective was to study the deflection profile and distribution of internal forces up the height of the superelastic tendon–restrained building and examine the contributions by the higher modes. The internal forces predicted by the analytical model developed in the study are shown to be in good agreement with experimental measurements. Practical Applications: Modular construction shortens construction time and reduces environmental impacts. Currently, fully modular buildings, which have a high degree of prefabrication, are limited to low-rise constructions because of concerns over the overturning risk in major earthquake events. A new seismic safe design employing a superelastic tendon is introduced in this article to extend fully modular construction to high-rise buildings. The building is designed to rotate about its base when subjected to high intensity ground shaking. The amount of rotation is controlled by the superelastic tendon in order to avoid overturning from occurring. Meanwhile, internal forces taken up by the structural elements within the building were kept much lower than a conventional fixed base building. The dynamic testing of the miniature model of a 19-story building on the shaking table was featured in the study, which laid down principles that are essential for the formulation of effective guidelines for the structural design of this type of building. Purpose: This study aimed to identify and assess the barriers to implementing modular construction systems (MCS) in developing country's architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry, targeting built environment professionals from Nigeria and South Africa. Design/methodology/approach: The study adopted a quantitative research method, using a structured questionnaire to seek the opinions of the professionals on the identified categories of barriers. Findings: Results indicated that all identified categories of barriers were statistically significant using a one-sample t-test at p = 0.05 significance level which indicates they are critical towards the implementation of MCS in developing countries. Assessment of the opinion of the professionals using the Kruskal–Wallis scale showed that they hold similar views on the barriers to the adoption of MCS. Pearson correlation shows a high correlation coefficient amongst the barrier categories and an acceptable level of significance (p = 0.05). Research limitations/implications: This study is limited to two significant African countries (Nigeria and South Africa) selected based on the gross domestic product (GDP). Further studies can consider developing countries outside Africa and investigate broader respondents. Practical implications: The study provides implications on the barriers affecting MCS in developing countries for the academia, industry and government to have an insight into the barriers and make informed decisions and policies. An offshore multipurpose floating platform (MPFP) combines different marine technologies to serve industry needs using one infrastructure; the aim of an MPFP is enlarging the synthesis benefits and reducing the negative impacts. Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) in particular has attracted significant attention for its great potential and low environmental risk. This research demonstrates the system design of a conceptual MPFP in the South China Sea, evaluating its economic and environmental sustainability using an inclusive index. The system is based on a modular floating structure with a designed lifetime of 50 years. Tuna aquaculture, microalgae cultivation and processing, and the OTEC energy infrastructure are integrated to increase the profitability of the applications. We adopted a high-yield photobioreactor microalgae cultivation system and a low-cost barge-type floating structure combined with a semisubmergible to reduce the required area and cost of the floating structure and improve the sustainability of the system. The inclusive impact index "Triple-I-light (IIIlight)" was calculated to evaluate the environmental sustainability and economic feasibility of the floating system. The result shows that the new system becomes environmentally neutral (EF = BC) at a lifetime of 11.5 years, showing sustainability (IIIlight ≤ 0) at a lifetime of 20 years. The proposed system can produce fish with no external energy or feed supply. Chemotherapy drugs often cause various adverse reactions and affect normal tissues, so it is of great significance to design effective targeted anti‐tumor drug delivery methods. We constructed a series of self‐assembled supramolecular modular structures and explored whether they could become an effective targeted antitumor fluorescent agent. UV and fluorescence spectra show that it has fluorescence. The drug release curve was determined by dialysis method and the results showed that the release rate of PCB series composites was the highest under pH = 5. The curcumin pyrimidine derivative was embedded in the structure, and the formation of the complex was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. The results for the cell imaging indicated that with the decrease of environmental pH value, the ability of PCB‐1 and PCB‐2 to penetrate the biofilm barrier into cells increased, suggesting that they have targeting action. The results of the cell viability test showed that PCB‐1 and PCB‐2 had a good inhibitory effect on MGC and HeLa cells. TEM showed that PCB‐1 was a regular hexahedron structure and PCB‐2 was a rod structure. In addition, the encapsulation efficiency of PCB‐1 and PCB‐2 was tested to be 86.50% and 88.57%, respectively, with drug loading rates of 27.62% and 28.38%, and Zeta potential values of +35 and +32. Automatic disease progression prediction models require large amounts of training data, which are seldom available, especially when it comes to rare diseases. A possible solution is to integrate data from different medical centres. Nevertheless, various centres often follow diverse data collection procedures and assign different semantics to collected data. Ontologies, used as schemas for interoperable knowledge bases, represent a state-of-the-art solution to homologate the semantics and foster data integration from various sources. This work presents the BrainTeaser Ontology (BTO), an ontology that models the clinical data associated with two brain-related rare diseases (ALS and MS) in a comprehensive and modular manner. BTO assists in organizing and standardizing the data collected during patient follow-up. It was created by harmonizing schemas currently used by multiple medical centers into a common ontology, following a bottom-up approach. As a result, BTO effectively addresses the practical data collection needs of various real-world situations and promotes data portability and interoperability. BTO captures various clinical occurrences, such as disease onset, symptoms, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and relapses, using an event-based approach. Developed in collaboration with medical partners and domain experts, BTO offers a holistic view of ALS and MS for supporting the representation of retrospective and prospective data. Furthermore, BTO adheres to Open Science and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles, making it a reliable framework for developing predictive tools to aid in medical decision-making and patient care. With the great development of the construction industry, prefabricated building components have been greatly developed. To study the compressive performance of the new wallboard, the axial compression performance test of six full-scale new lattice wallboards was carried out in this paper. The failure mode, axial pressure-displacement relationship curve, axial compression bearing capacity, and axial pressure-strain relationship of the wallboard were obtained through the experiments. This reveals the influence of the thickness of the concrete surface and the number of ribs on the performance of the wallboard. The test results show that the ultimate bearing capacity of the specimen increases with the increase of the thickness of the concrete surface layer with the same number of ribs. Specimen DW -30 increased by 4% over DW -20 and DW -50 increased by 41.6% over DW -30. The ultimate bearing capacity of the three-ribbed specimens was higher than that of the two-ribbed specimens for the same concrete face thickness, about 1.11 times that of the two-ribbed specimens. The concrete facing thickness and the number of ribs have a restraining effect on the deformation of the wallboard. Additionally, the calculation formula of axial bearing capacity of type latticed wallboard considering the influence of eccentric compression was proposed, which can provide a reference for engineering calculation. Fit‐out operations in modular construction exhibit unique features, such as limited room space and diversely distributed operations in the building. These features pose significant challenges to planning, scheduling, and execution (PSE) of fit‐out activities due to operational parallelism, distributional diversity, and narrower constrained time window in modular construction. Hence, logistics‐operation and multi‐operations synchronizations in a real‐time manner are crucial for PSE of modular construction fit‐out management. With the support of cutting‐edge information technologies, the real‐time data inside the generated digital twins can simplify online optimization models and convert stochastic factors into deterministic parameters. This paper formulates a novel real‐time data‐driven Out‐of‐Order (OoO) model for synchronized PSE in modular construction fit‐out management. Drawing inspiration from OoO mechanism in Central Processing Unit (CPU), a real‐time data‐driven and rolling‐horizon‐based OoO model is proposed for PSE of modular construction fit‐out, employing a forward heuristic algorithm for solution. Time–space–state data from digital twins are updated to facilitate dynamic decision‐making of managers. Through stochastic computational experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of OoO model in optimizing project metrics and the improved resilience in uncertain environments. The development of new chiral ligands with simple and modular structure represents a challenging direction in the design of efficient homogeneous transition metal catalysts. Herein, we report on the asymmetric hydrogenation of prochiral ketones catalyzed by the iridium complexes of simple alkane-diyl-based P,N,O-type chiral ligands with a highly modular structure. The role of (i) the P-N and N-O backbone in the potentially tridentate ligands, (ii) the number, position and relative configuration of their stereogenic elements and (iii) the effect of their NH and OH subunits on the activity and enantioselectivity of the catalytic reactions are studied. The systematic variation in the ligand structure and the comparative catalytic experiments shed light on different mechanistic aspects of the iridium-catalyzed reaction. The catalysts containing the simple alkane-diyl-based ligands with central chirality provided high enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee) under optimized reaction conditions and proved to be active and selective even at very high substrate concentrations (100 mmol substrate/mL solvent). The software platform named GNSS + REsearch, Application and Teaching (GREAT) has been designed and developed by Wuhan University for satellite geodesy and multi-source fusion navigation. GREAT is a comprehensive software platform based on C++ language, with modular structure, cross-platform capabilities and efficient performance. The software mainly focuses on space geodetic data processing, precise positioning and orbit determination, and multi-source fusion navigation. With the integration of multiple space geodetic techniques at observation level, GREAT can achieve the determination of global geodetic parameters. Meanwhile, GREAT can also achieve real-time precise orbit and clock determination by processing GNSS data from globally distributed stations, and the accuracies are about 3–6 cm for orbit and 0.1–0.4 ns for clock. Based on high-precision orbit and clock products, centimeter-level onboard positioning accuracies can be achieved with PPP-RTK in open-sky scenarios. A topological interlocking assembly (TIA) is an assembly of blocks together with a non-empty subset of blocks called the frame such that every non-empty set of blocks is kinematically constrained and can therefore not be removed from the assembly without causing intersections between blocks of the assembly. TIA provides a wide range of real-world applications, from modular construction in architectural design to potential solutions for sound insulation. Various methods to construct TIA have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, the approach of constructing TIA by applying the Escher trick to tilings of orientable surfaces is discussed. First, the strengths of this approach are highlighted for planar tilings, and the Escher trick is then exploited to construct a planar TIA that is based on the truncated square tiling, which is a semi-regular tiling of the Euclidean plane. Next, the Escher-Like approach is modified to construct TIAs that are based on arbitrary orientable surfaces. Finally, the capabilities of this modified construction method are demonstrated by constructing TIAs that are based on the unit sphere, the truncated icosahedron, and the deltoidal hexecontahedron. The urban landscape is undergoing significant transformations due to economic shifts, urban planning initiatives, technological advancements, and sociopolitical changes. Almost 89% of the U.S. population is projected to reside in urban areas by 2050, which increases a pressing need for innovative and efficient urban revitalization strategies. Modular construction is an extensively researched topic with potential promise for addressing these challenges; however, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of its specific opportunities and challenges within the context of urban revitalization. This paper explores the potential of modular construction methods as a viable solution in densely populated areas with limited space and competing land uses. This study employs a systematic literature review using PRISMA and mixed methods analysis with NVivo to identify the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing modular construction in urban settings. The findings highlight the advantages of modular construction, including reduced construction time, enhanced quality control, and improved sustainability. However, challenges such as land scarcity, restrictive zoning laws, and the need for innovative planning and collaboration among stakeholders are also emphasized. This paper illustrates the design and fabrication processes of the Hypar Up pavilion, which served as a proof-of-concept to demonstrate the viability of a design-to-fabrication workflow for complex yet modular architectural geometries that utilise small and planar timber offcuts geometries discretised as Planar Quadrilateral (PQ) meshes. By integrating computational design and optimisation with efficient manufacturing processes, this research highlights the technical challenges of repurposing materials with unknown characteristics, notably detailing solutions, and evaluates the efficiency of design-to-manufacturing workflows with surplus timber products, using a quantitative cost analysis of the fabrication and assembly phases. While exploring the potential of repurposing scrap wood into hypar-shaped modular construction components, this work expands on existing research on segmented shells and investigates methods and means to move beyond the use of shell structures as monolithic and static artefacts. The pavilion is intended as a 1:1 modular prototype that can be resized to accommodate different dimensions of the timber panel offcuts and potential applications to be tested in future applications, such as load-bearing walls and facade retrofitting. Modular integrated construction (MiC) is now widely adopted by industry and governments. However, its fragile and delicate logistics are still a concern for impeding project performance. MiC logistic operations involve rigorous multimode transportation, loading-unloading, and stacking during storage. Such processes may induce latent and intrinsic damage to the module. This damage causes safety hazards during assembly and deteriorates the module's structural health during the building use phase. Also, additional inspection and repairs before assembly cause uncertainties and can delay the whole supply chain. Therefore, continuous monitoring of the module's structural response during MiC logistics and the building use phase is vital. An IoT-based multi-sensing system is developed, integrating an accelerometer, gyroscope, and strain sensors to measure the module's structural response. The compact, portable, wireless sensing devices are designed to be easily installed on modules during the logistics and building use phases. The system is tested and calibrated to ensure its accuracy and efficiency. Then, a detailed field experiment is demonstrated to assess the damage, safety, and structural health during MiC logistic operations. The demonstrated damage assessment methods highlight the application for decision-makers to identify the module's structural condition before it arrives on site and proactively avoid any supply chain disruption. The developed sensing system is directly helpful for the industry in monitoring MiC logistics and module structural health during the use phase. The system enables the researchers to investigate and improve logistic strategies and module design by accessing detailed insights into the dynamics of MiC logistic operations. This paper considers the design, manufacture, and testing of a prototype "soft–stiff" worm-inspired robot referred to herein, as the PneumaticallyActuated PeristaLtic Advancing Modular (PALAM) robot. The robot has a modular structure, mimicking the segmented nature of earthworms, and each segment is individually actuated by a set of three pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs). The PAMs contract when inflated by pressurised air, generating a pulling force and fulfilling the role of biological muscles in the robot. The PAMs are made from the elastomer silicone rubber, which affords the robot flexibility and enables a wide range of real-life applications. A control-system is designed which can inflate any PAM on demand, and hence replicate the peristaltic motion of earthworms in the PALAM robot. Finally, this paper discusses a successful, low-cost, and widely accessible approach for the manufacture of the PAMs utilised herein. The PAMs can be scaled dimensionally and made from different materials with varying mechanical properties and behaviours, meaning that they are suitable for use in a wide range of robotics applications. Modular integrated construction (MiC) has witnessed increasing adoption in worldwide building projects, driven by various benefits, including improved construction efficiency, reduced on-site labor hours, and minimized waste and pollution. The construction industry has recognized the transportation of prefabricated modules as a huge obstacle to the wide implementation of MiC. In practice, transport planning of prefabricated modules is usually intuitively decided by general contractors based on experience. Intuitive decisions cannot ensure the just-in-time (JIT) module delivery, thereby incurring additional costs of early and late delivery. Motivated by this challenge, this study endeavors to design cost-minimized transportation plans for prefabricated modules using mathematical programming methodology. An integer programming model and a tailored solution method are proposed. Then, we use data from two real building projects in Hong Kong as model inputs to demonstrate the computation of optimal module transport plans using the proposed methodology. Numerical results show that, if the JIT strategy is not considered in module transport planning, the actual total transportation costs will be 21.74% higher than the expected ones. Comparative costs of JIT implementation and nonimplementation indicate the significance of the JIT strategy. Additionally, our proposed method can achieve punctual module delivery and reduce the overall transportation expenses by 10.13%, implying considerable cost savings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work is focused on researching the particle behavior of the transient gas–solid flow in the propulsion system with the modular charge structure, which has a great effect on the temporal-spatial distribution of energy release. Based on the coupling method of computational fluid dynamics and the discrete element method, an efficient three-dimensional unsteady gas–solid model is developed to provide a detailed means of capturing particle behavior in the propulsion system with a complex structure. Comparisons of the particle distribution of simulation results are done with experimental research, and a reasonable match has been obtained. Furthermore, the particle behavior characteristics can be divided into three stages. In the first stage, the particle behavior is dominated by the high-pressure, high-speed gas from the igniter. In the other two stages, the particle behavior is dominated by the complex gas flow generated by the opening of the module and the groove structure of the vehicle. The results show that the distribution of particles consists of slope accumulation and horizontal accumulation. The slope accumulation with a large gradient contains 84% of the total particles, and the height of the slope accumulation is increased exponentially along the axis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electromagnetic wave logging while drilling (LWD) technology is an important tool for evaluation of formation oil and gas content. It generally adopts multi-transmitter–receiver coil system structure and the symmetrical coil system arrangement with equal transmitter–receiver spacing can obtain the measurement results with borehole compensation. Here, we develop a method to realize wellbore compensation by deep learning for logging data inversion. This paper focuses on reasonable inversion of logging data through deep learning technology, which is combined with Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm, modular and fast construction of deep neural network (DNN) model. Under the condition of reducing the outermost transmitting coil, the logging data are inversed, and the inversion effect is evaluated. Our research shows that the combination of neural network and logging data can realize the measurement results with borehole compensation under the condition of reducing one transmitting coil, thereby shortening the instrument length to reduce drilling tool sticking risk and effectively reducing the LWD instrument structure complexity, high power and other problems. At the same time, the accuracy of logging data inversion is tested. The test results show that the DNN method can achieve high-precision inversion, and the average error is reduced by about 50% compared with the traditional algorithm such as linear regression. This investigative study explored the potential of a novel approach called the modular insulated concrete core—advanced and optimized panelized production system (MICADO) method within the realm of modular structures, focusing on its parametric development. By combining frame-supported modular systems with premanufactured panels for exterior walls, the MICADO approach allows for simultaneous installation, and has demonstrated promising prospects. This research investigated the challenges associated with assembling and connecting MICADO structures in the face of seismic and gravity loads. Through rigorous worst-case scenarios, critical load combinations were identified and analyzed. The outcomes of this research provide valuable insights into the design of joints in MICADO structures, ensuring their overall structural integrity and stability. The study presents an integration of cob with robotic processes. By challenging conventional monolithic earth-building methods, the study proposes the use of spatial nonplanar formations that are robotically fabricated, presenting an alternative geometric language for earth construction. The research methodology is derived from existing factors within the robotic lab, encompassing both constant and variable parameters. Through an experimental approach, the variables are systematically manipulated while observing the outcomes to identify patterns and relationships. Incremental refinements to the research conditions result in an optimal equilibrium state within the defined lab parameters. An empirical investigation approach serves as the foundation for controlling the printing process; wherein an iterative adjustment of the robot extrusion parameters is based on the behaviour of the deposited material. The outcome is several robotically printed cob nonplanar prototypes. Depending on their geometric formations and complexity, the printing process combined three variations: continuous, intervals, and modular. The latter enabled the production of a cob arch, serving as proof of feasibility for the creation of modular cob structures through a segmented assembly process. The study contributes to expanding the possibilities of cob construction by leveraging robotic technologies and paving the way for innovative applications of cob in contemporary architecture practices. The construction industry is constantly evolving through government policies, technologies, and innovative processes. BIM and modular construction are innovative concepts aimed at achieving sustainable smart cities by enhancing cost performance, efficiency, and sustainability. Despite growing global interest in their integration, there is a notable knowledge gap in sub-Saharan Africa. As a result, this research aims to explore the barriers to integrating BIM into modular construction in sub-Saharan Africa. The study adopted a non-experimental design, using a four-stage methodological framework. Initially, a literature review was carried out to conceptualize the study. Stage two involves a pilot survey to create an adequate data collection instrument. In the third stage, 81 registered companies were purposely selected, and data was collected through an online survey. Finally, the fourth stage uses descriptive and inferential techniques to make logical and informed conclusions. The top-ranked barriers are high initial costs, insufficient cross-field expertise, stakeholder collaboration problems, limited software interoperability, and skills shortages. Recommendations include early stakeholder collaboration, BIM execution plan development by modular companies, improved staff training, and increasing financial support from the government. During emergencies, healthcare is generally provided by tents and temporary shelters, without considering the environmental and social impact of the structures as a priority, in favor of swift response. The resultant constructions intended as a temporary solution often persist for a long time. This paper aims to analyze an alternative and innovative modular structure designed as a transitory solution in emergencies and everyday life. The aim of this study is to assess and compare the energetic performance of a modular adaptive model for basic healthcare for people who are not subscribed to the Italian National Health System. The main goal is to challenge standard models by proposing a new model able to diminish the weaknesses of the current sanitary models, to improve the social conditions, flexibility and energy efficiency, and the thermal comfort of the occupants. In the first part of the paper, the conceptual framework and the preliminary design of the model are described by investigating the benefits of a safe space as a generator space for care services and the community. In the second part, the technological requirements of the system are defined by comparing the use of different panel structures and low-impact technologies. The energy efficiency and environmental impact of the model are assessed by comparing several panel structures in two different climatic areas in Italy (northern and Mediterranean areas) using SketchUp and EnergyPlus simulation. As a result, different configurations of the model are proposed according to the different climatic areas in order to optimize the model, from both an architectural and a technological point of view (box and panel composition). The pulsatile activity of gonadotropin-releasing hormone neurons (GnRH neurons) is a key factor in the regulation of reproductive hormones. This pulsatility is orchestrated by a network of neurons that release the neurotransmitters kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and dynorphin (KNDy neurons), and produce episodic bursts of activity driving the GnRH neurons. We show in this computational study that the features of coordinated KNDy neuron activity can be explained by a neural network in which connectivity among neurons is modular. That is, a network structure consisting of clusters of highly-connected neurons with sparse coupling among the clusters. This modular structure, with distinct parameters for intracluster and intercluster coupling, also yields predictions for the differential effects on synchronization of changes in the coupling strength within clusters versus between clusters. Author summary: Since the discovery of a small population of hypothalamic neurons that secrete kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and dynorphin (KNDy neurons), there has been interest in their role as a pacemaker for the pulsatile release of key reproductive hormones. A fundamental question is what mechanism coordinates KNDy neuron activity to generate population bursts. Optical imaging of the KNDy network at single-neuron resolution has revealed that individual KNDy neurons participate in many, but not all, population bursts. It has also shown that the order in which the neurons are recruited in each burst could be highly determined in some animals but not in others. We demonstrate here that these observations can be explained by a neural network with a modular structure, and that one benefit of the structure is the ability to differentially modulate the level of synchronization by changes in key coupling parameters. This paper introduces a resonant switched capacitor converter (RSCC) topology that enhances the operational efficiency by utilizing devices with reduced ratings. The RSCC eliminates bulky magnetic elements, yielding increased power density, modular structure, and compact size compared with switched inductor topologies. Significantly, all the switched capacitors in the proposed converter and approximately 50% of the switching power devices are explicitly rated for the input voltage enabling its use for high‐power applications. A compact inductor is utilized for resonant operation, and the switching frequency of the converter is significantly reduced leading to reduced switching losses and improved efficiency. Zero current turn‐ON and turn‐OFF of the switching devices is achieved. Elimination of load‐side bulky capacitor using inherent output voltage ripple reduction is achieved by aligning the switching phases of the converter such that individual capacitor voltage ripple gets cancelled out. The work extensively covers the analysis of the converter in steady‐state and the effect of non‐idealities during the resonant operation. Further, a detailed design of the topology with a discussion on component selection is presented. The operation of the proposed converter is systematically analyzed through a series of simulation results generated, and the converter is further validated by developing an experimental prototype at a power of 200 W with an efficiency of 95.83%. Here, a high gain DC–DC converter which is based on switched capacitor (SC) and switched LCL (SLCL) cells is presented. The diode employed in the classical passive switched inductor (SI) cell is replaced by a capacitor in the proposed SLCL cell to achieve higher voltage gain. Two switches—one each in the positive and negative DC rails of the supply are employed to charge and discharge the inductors of SLCL cells. A generic structure comprising of N and M number of SLCL cells in the positive and negative DC rails respectively along with K number of SC cells is presented. To validate the proposed gain extension concept, a two‐switch based converter comprising of 2 SLCL and 1 SC cells is synthesized and its operation is described in detail. The voltage gain expression of the proposed SLCL‐SC converter is derived. Experimental results are obtained from a 25 to 380 V prototype converter which operates at a full‐load efficiency of 94.22% at 200 W. Since the switches employed in the proposed converter are operated at a moderate and safe duty ratio of D = 0.51, the voltage stress on the switches is about 25% of the output voltage while the diodes are subjected to even lesser voltage stress levels of only one‐fifth of the output voltage. The main salient features of the proposed topology are its (i) modular structure, (ii) ability to provide higher voltage gain values at lower duty ratios (iii) reduced voltage stress on the semiconductor devices and (iv) reduced conduction losses due to the replacement of diodes with capacitors in SLCL cells. We describe an approach for designing high-affinity small molecule–binding proteins poised for downstream sensing. We use deep learning–generated pseudocycles with repeating structural units surrounding central binding pockets with widely varying shapes that depend on the geometry and number of the repeat units. We dock small molecules of interest into the most shape complementary of these pseudocycles, design the interaction surfaces for high binding affinity, and experimentally screen to identify designs with the highest affinity. We obtain binders to four diverse molecules, including the polar and flexible methotrexate and thyroxine. Taking advantage of the modular repeat structure and central binding pockets, we construct chemically induced dimerization systems and low-noise nanopore sensors by splitting designs into domains that reassemble upon ligand addition. Data Assimilation (DA) of time-variable satellite gravity observations, e.g., from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), GRACE-Follow On (GRACE-FO) and future gravity missions, can be applied to constrain the vertical sum of water storage simulations of Global Hydrological Models (GHMs). However, the state-of-the-art DA of these measured Terrestrial Water Storage (TWS) changes into models is often performed regionally, and if globally, at low spatial resolution. This choice is made to handle the considerably high computational demands of DA, and to avoid numerical problems, e.g., instabilities related to the inversion of covariance matrices. To fully exploit the potential of satellite gravity observations and the high spatial resolution of GHMs, we developed a Python-based open-source PyGLDA system that allows performing DA globally at a fine scale with high numerical efficiency. The main novelties of the system include (i) implementing a globe-scale patch-wise DA via domain localization and neighbouring-weighted global aggregation and (2) its great compatibility between basin-scale and grid-scale DAs. This PyGLDA system represents a considerable functional advancement on previous implementations with wide and flexible options offered to allow for various user-specific studies. The modular structure of PyGLDA provides users with various possibilities to interact with (and add/remove) individual water storage compartments, change the representation of observations, and, therefore, the ability to choose different GHMs. In this paper, we present a full description of this system and its application for the Danube River Basin as a regional case study and through a global DA. This study investigated the effects of threaded bolt fasteners on the initial and final stiffness of bolted joints in special steel modular construction. A comprehensive set of 246 specimens, including 4, 7.6, and 12 mm thick plates with 20 and 30 mm diameter bolts and different end spacings, were tested. The results revealed that connections with threaded bolts exhibited lower initial stiffness compared to pure shaft connections. This study introduced a novel formula that significantly improved simulation results for bolted joints, surpassing previous modeling approaches. Following the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) definition, the "elastic" stiffness values obtained from the laboratory tests were compared with those of Eurocode provisions. Additionally, ad hoc formulas were proposed for the stiffness of shank, lap connection with partially threaded, and fully threaded bolts. Through vicinal difunctionalization of nitriles, a successful, innovative strategy for the synthesis of N-alkyl amidines is developed. This methodology capitalizes on commercially available nitriles, alcohols, and sulfonamides. The activation of alcohols by trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride (Tf2O) plays a pivotal role throughout the entire reaction process. In comparison to existing amidine synthesis methods, this strategy showcases notable advantages, including the avoidance of toxic and hazardous azides, the exclusion of transition metal catalysts, and the use of mild reaction conditions. Importantly, this methodology provides an effective approach for late-stage modification of complex molecules and drugs, holding promise for the construction of molecular libraries in drug discovery. There is increasing evidence that biological systems are modular in both structure and function. Complex biological signaling networks such as gene regulatory networks (GRNs) are proving to be composed of subcategories that are interconnected and hierarchically ranked. These networks contain highly dynamic processes that ultimately dictate cellular function over time, as well as influence phenotypic fate transitions. In this work, we use a stochastic multicellular signaling network of pancreatic cancer (PC) to show that the variance in topological rankings of the most phenotypically influential modules implies a strong relationship between structure and function. We further show that induction of mutations alters the modular structure, which analogously influences the aggression and controllability of the disease in silico. We finally present evidence that the impact and location of mutations with respect to PC modular structure directly corresponds to the efficacy of single agent treatments in silico, because topologically deep mutations require deep targets for control. Modular housing represents an opportunity for the mass provision of housing of an appropriate standard, implemented sustainably. We analyzed the theoretical basis of this type of housing for refugee populations. We identified several generations of housing provision, from tented camps to container settlements, and ultimately to units resembling traditional housing estates. The latter is feasible due to technological advancements. Our research contributes to the implementation of the principles of the New European Bauhaus initiative, which underpins the European Green Deal policy on space design. Using the Research through Design (RtD) method within the framework of a settlement project for the Ukrainian population migrating from war zones (Modular Refugees Settlement Project "ProModSe"), we tested the suitability of these principles in extreme and critical war-related situations. The most important criteria were speed of implementation, the prospect of long-term residence, and ensuring safety. We analyzed the social, environmental, and aesthetic–functional aspects, comparing them with existing practices in the design of settlements for displaced persons, modular settlements, and quality standards in residential environments. The results demonstrate, at multiple scales, the critical interdependence of sustainable development, aesthetics and functionality, and community creation. We emphasize the need to include security as an essential fourth axis within the New European Bauhaus concept. This study contributes to addressing the complex housing problem for refugee populations. Carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) can be found in all domains of life and play a crucial role in metabolic and physiological processes. CAZymes often possess a modular structure, comprising not only catalytic domains but also associated domains such as carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs) and linker domains. By exploring the modular diversity of CAZy families, catalysts with novel properties can be discovered and further insight in their biological functions and evolutionary relationships can be obtained. Here we present the carbohydrate-active enzyme domain analysis tool (CANDy), an assembly of several novel scripts, tools and databases that allows users to analyze the domain architecture of all protein sequences in a given CAZy family. CANDy's usability is shown on glycoside hydrolase family 48, a small yet underexplored family containing multi-domain enzymes. Our analysis reveals the existence of 35 distinct domain assemblies, including eight known architectures, with the remaining assemblies awaiting characterization. Moreover, we substantiate the occurrence of horizontal gene transfer from prokaryotes to insect orthologs and provide evidence for the subsequent removal of auxiliary domains, likely through a gene fission event. In this article, a modular model is proposed for the reliability modeling of phased mission systems (PMSs) with complicated system behaviors. By the modular method, the system is divided into several levels: system, subsystem, and components. At the component level, the shock effect, including self‐degradation, additional wear and damage caused by shocks, is considered and the component reliability is evaluated. Then, the reliability modeling method of the K/N system consisting of multiple K/N subsystems is proposed, by a mathematics reasoning method. The correctness of the proposed method is also verified by a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation procedure. At last, the modular method is applied at the system level, and the reliability of a practical engineering case, the attitude and orbit control system (AOCS), is evaluated for illustration. Construction waste causes severe environmental problems. Reducing construction waste generation becomes a major policy measure of governments to achieve sustainable development. Offsite construction approaches are effective for reducing onsite construction waste. Nevertheless, there is a lack of a clear understanding of the types and amounts of construction waste that different offsite construction approaches can reduce. This study aims to investigate the performance of the modular construction (MC) approach in construction waste generation and reduction and how it differs from that of the nonmodular offsite construction (NMOC) approaches by comparing 59 selected cases of building projects that adopt these offsite approaches compared with stick-built construction. Results indicated that the adoption of offsite construction contributed to significant onsite construction waste reduction. On average, adopting MC reduced 78.8% of overall construction waste, outperforming other construction approaches. The level of prefabrication influenced onsite construction waste generation and reduction the most, followed by the other properties like building typology, density, and material used. Seven knowledge gaps were identified in the area of waste identification, quantification, and assessment. The findings demonstrate the advantages of using offsite construction in waste control and management and add to the existing body of knowledge on onsite construction waste generation and on waste reduction through adopting MC. The identified knowledge gaps point directions of future research on waste reduction through offsite construction. Practical Applications: The results of this paper suggest that the adoption of offsite construction can contribute to significant onsite construction waste reductions compared with conventional stick-built construction. Specifically, buildings adopting the modular construction (MC) approach can reduce overall construction wastes by around 80% and outperform other nonmodular offsite construction approaches, including those that adopt one-dimensional prefabricated beams and columns, two-dimensional prefabricated panels, or three-dimensional prefabricated pods, based on the analysis of 59 building cases covering different levels of prefabrication, building typologies, building densities, and building materials. This study contributes to the investigation of onsite construction waste by proposing a systematic assessment method addressing different construction waste types and assessment criteria. It facilitates a better understanding of the advantages of offsite construction in terms of waste control and management, especially MC, which was underexplored in the literature. Seven knowledge gaps were identified in the area of construction waste identification, quantification, and assessment. Interaction networks are a widely used tool to understand the dynamics of plant–pollinator ecological communities. However, while most mutualistic networks have been defined at the species level, ecological processes such as pollination take place at different scales, including the individual or patch levels. Yet, current approaches studying fine‐grain sub‐specific plant–pollinator networks only account for interactions among nodes belonging to a single plant species due to the conceptual and mathematical limitations of modeling simultaneously several plant species each composed of several nodes. Here, we introduce a multilayer diffusion network framework that allows modeling simple diffusion processes between nodes pertaining to the same or different layers (i.e. species). It is designed to depict from the network structure the potential conspecific and heterospecific pollen flows among plant individuals or patches. This potential pollen flow is modeled as a transport‐like system, in which pollen grain movements are represented as random‐walkers that diffuse on an ensemble of bipartite layers of conspecific plants and their shared pollinators. We exemplify this physical conceptualization using a dataset of nine fine‐grain sub‐specific plant–pollinator networks from a Mediterranean grassland of annual plants, where plant nodes represent groups of conspecifics within patches of 1 m2. The diffusion networks show pollinators effectively connecting sets of patches of the same and different plant species, forming a modular structure. Interestingly, different properties of the network structure, such as the conspecific pollen arrival probability and the number of conspecific subgraphs in which plants are embedded, are critical for the seed production of different plant species. We provide a simple but robust set of metrics to calculate potential pollen flow and scale down network ecology to functioning properties at the individual or patch level, where most ecological processes take place, hence moving forward the description and interpretation of species‐rich communities across scales. This paper discusses the design and implementation of a portable IoT station. Communication and data synchronization issues in several installations are addressed here, making possible a detailed analysis of the entire system during its operation. The system operator requires a synchronized data stream, combining multiple communication protocols into one single time stamp. The hardware selected for the portable IoT station complies with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) industrial standards. A short discussion regarding interface customization shows how easily the hardware can be modified so that it is integrated with almost any system. A programmable logic controller enables the Node-RED to be utilized. This open-source middleware defines operations for each global variable nominated in the Modbus register. Two applications are presented and discussed in this paper; each application has a distinct methodology utilized to publish and visualize the acquired data. The portable IoT station is highly customizable, consisting of a modular structure and providing the best platform for future research and development of dedicated algorithms. This paper also demonstrates how the portable IoT station can be implemented in systems where time-based data synchronization is essential while introducing a seamless implementation and operation. This paper deals with an optimization problem of determining the maintenance units and age‐based inspection schemes to minimize the expected maintenance cost rate and satisfy a target system availability for multi‐indenture systems that have a modular structure with redundant units. Failures of primary components directly lead to system failures and can therefore be identified and maintained immediately, while failures of redundant components need to be identified by inspections. And the designated maintenance units need to be replaced during maintenance. By constructing the dual structure of the fault tree, we present a failure path enumeration method, based on which the system availability and expected maintenance cost rate models considering maintenance time are derived. For redundant units, two types of inspection policies are considered in our models: one is the corrective maintenance (CM)‐based inspection policy, and the other one is the age‐based inspection (PM) policy, inspections are performed at failures or age h, depending on which occurred earlier. A heuristic algorithm is proposed to find the reasonable maintenance units and inspection intervals simultaneously, and its performance is also compared and analyzed. Summary: Effector proteins are central to the success of plant pathogens, while immunity in host plants is driven by receptor‐mediated recognition of these effectors. Understanding the molecular details of effector–receptor interactions is key for the engineering of novel immune receptors.Here, we experimentally determined the crystal structure of the Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt) effector AvrSr27, which was not accurately predicted using AlphaFold2. We characterised the role of the conserved cysteine residues in AvrSr27 using in vitro biochemical assays and examined Sr27‐mediated recognition using transient expression in Nicotiana spp. and wheat protoplasts.The AvrSr27 structure contains a novel β‐strand rich modular fold consisting of two structurally similar domains that bind to Zn2+ ions. The N‐terminal domain of AvrSr27 is sufficient for interaction with Sr27 and triggering cell death. We identified two Pgt proteins structurally related to AvrSr27 but with low sequence identity that can also associate with Sr27, albeit more weakly. Though only the full‐length proteins, trigger Sr27‐dependent cell death in transient expression systems.Collectively, our findings have important implications for utilising protein prediction platforms for effector proteins, and those embarking on bespoke engineering of immunity receptors as solutions to plant disease. On-orbit servicing and on-orbit assembly represent very appealing mission concepts that could facilitate the exploitation of the space environment. Autonomy is a critical requirement for systems aimed at the execution of these operations. The development of enabling technologies for this type of missions is a focal research topic for the global space community. The AUTOMA project (University of Padua, Italy) aims at the development of technologies to enable the on-orbit assembly of a standardized modular unit by means of a robotic arm. The goal is the development of a capture interface, composed of a gripper mechanism and a suite of close-range navigation sensors (a navcam, four time-of-flight sensors, two custom matrix sensors based on a set of phototransistors), and the mock-up of a modular assembly unit. The paper prevalently focuses on the conspicuous series of tests that has been performed at subsystem level for the characterization of the two custom matrix sensors, both in terms of their resolution and range of application. In particular, the test campaign has proven how the in-plane matrix sensor provides information about lateral misalignment and relative distance with a resolution of a few millimetres while the roll matrix sensor provides information about the angular roll misalignment with a resolution dependent on the distance between the two bodies. Modular construction is a method of construction that involves prefabricating modular indoor spaces in a factory and then assembling them at the construction site. However, dimensional errors made during production in the modular manufacturing factory may hinder assembly at the construction site and delay the entire construction process. In particular, as the quality of intermodular connections determines the structural performance and serviceability of the entire modular building, meticulous quality control is required for the connections. In this study, a method is developed for inspection of the intermodular connection locations to meet the requirements of being accurate, inexpensive, easy-to-use, rapid, and operable by a single person, and then tested in a modular factory. The proposed inspection method consists of three parts: (a) a laser meter mounted on a gimbal, (b) target reflectors based on the tumbling doll principle, and (c) a mobile device as a remote control and for data storage, data post-processing, and visualization of results. The proposed inspection process was tested on a modular unit that had been manufactured at a modular factory; the proposed method outperformed the conventional method in terms of accuracy, inspection time, and work safety. The proposed inspection method allows the accurate and rapid inspection of locations of intermodular connection holes and, thus, its use in modular factories is likely to improve the economics and efficiency of modular construction. The modular construction industry struggles to implement the modularization strategy appropriately due to a poor understanding of the differences between stick-built and modular construction methods and unique modular challenges. Among many modular challenges, transporting prefinished volumetric modules is one of the underinvestigated key challenges—the conventional methods for module transportation [e.g., truck, self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT), and so on), although fitting for projects comprising multiple modules, are not ideal for projects with fewer modules and limited jobsite space. This study investigates hydraulic jacks and trailer bogie as the potential alternative transporting and module lifting/offloading methods by examining how the prefinished volumetric housing module is affected during the lifting, transporting (on-road and jobsite), and offloading phases of transportation. A sensor was installed on the volumetric housing module to record transportation-induced shocks in front-to-back tilt and left-to-right roll, deformation, and impact. The peaks and lows recorded for tilt and roll during each transportation phase were 42, 57, 1, and 0, and 346, 70, 6, and 14, respectively. The results indicated that impacts to the module were more directly associated with left-to-right rolls than front-to-back tilt, because high rolls primarily reflected the module making wide turns, whereas no deformation or impact was recorded. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by highlighting the hydraulic jack and trailer bogie as potential alternatives to the conventional crane and truck under certain conditions through the assessment of the transportation-induced impact on the prefinished volumetric housing module. This paper studies the structure of semantic theories over modular computational systems and applies the algebraic Theory of Institutions to provide a logical representation of such theories. A modular semantic theory is here defined by a cluster of semantic theories, each for a single program's module, and by a set of relations connecting models of different semantic theories. A semantic theory of a single module is provided in terms of the set of ∑‐models mapped from the category Th of ∑‐theories and generating a hierarchy of structures from an abstract model to a concrete model of data. The collection of abstract models representing different modules of a program is formalised as the category of institutions INS, where theory morphisms express refinements, integrations, and compositions between couples of modules.
