To develop trustworthy distributed systems, verification techniques and formal methods, including lightweight and practical approaches, have been employed to certify the design or implementation of security protocols. Lightweight formal methods offer a more accessible alternative to traditional fully formalised techniques by focusing on simplified models and tool support, making them more applicable in practical settings. The technical advantages of formal verification over manual testing are increasingly recognised in the cybersecurity community. However, for practitioners, formal modelling and verification are often too complex and unfamiliar to be used routinely. In this paper, we present an Eclipse IDE for the design, verification, and implementation of security protocols and evaluate its effectiveness, including feedback from users in educational settings. It offers user-friendly assistance in the formalisation process as part of a Model-Driven Development approach. This IDE centres around the Alice & Bob (AnB) notation, the AnBx Compiler and Code Generator, the OFMC model checker, and the ProVerif cryptographic protocol verifier. For the evaluation, we identify the six most prominent limiting factors for formal method adoption, based on relevant literature in this field, and we consider the IDE's effectiveness against those criteria. Additionally, we conducted a structured survey to collect feedback from university students who have used the toolkit for their projects. The findings demonstrate that this contribution is valuable as a workflow aid and helps users grasp essential cybersecurity concepts, even for those with limited knowledge of formal methods or cryptography. The majority of Ethical Hacking (EH) tools utilised in penetration testing are developed by practitioners within the industry or underground communities. Similarly, academic researchers have also contributed to developing security tools. However, there appears to be limited awareness among practitioners of academic contributions in this domain, creating a significant gap between industry and academia's contributions to EH tools. This research paper aims to survey the current state of EH academic research, primarily focusing on research-informed security tools. We categorise these tools into process-based frameworks (such as PTES and Mitre ATT\&CK) and knowledge-based frameworks (such as CyBOK and ACM CCS). This classification provides a comprehensive overview of novel, research-informed tools, considering their functionality and application areas. We present pore-resolved Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of turbulent flows grazing over acoustic liners with aerodynamically and/or acoustically optimized orifice configurations. Our DNS explore a large parameter space, studying various families of orifice geometries, including the influence of orifice shape, orientation, and the number of orifices. All flow cases show an increase in drag compared to the smooth wall. However, the added drag can be reduced by as much as $\sim$55\% as compared to conventional acoustic liners by simply altering the shape of the orifice or its orientation, in the case of a non-circular orifice. Complementary acoustic simulations demonstrate that this reduced drag may be achieved while maintaining the same noise reduction properties over a wide range of frequencies.

Bismuth produces different types of ordered superstructures on the InAs(100) surface, depending on the growth procedure and coverage. The (2x1) phase forms at completion of a Bi monolayer and consists of a uniformly oriented array of parallel lines of Bi dimers. Scanning tunneling and core level spectroscopies demonstrate its metallic character, in contrast with the semiconducting properties expected on the basis of the electron counting principle. The weak electronic coupling among neighboring lines gives rise to quasi one-dimensional Bi-derived bands with open contours at the Fermi level. Spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy reveals a giant Rashba splitting of these bands, in good agreement with ab-initio electronic structure calculations. The very high density of the dimer lines, the metallic and quasi one-dimensional band dispersion and the Rashba-like spin texture make the Bi/InAs(100)-(2x1) phase an intriguing system, where novel transport regimes can be studied., Comment: 4 figures, includes supplemental material file

We establish a theoretical framework for predicting friction and heat transfer coefficients in variable-properties forced air convection. Drawing from concepts in high-speed wall turbulence, which also involves significant temperature, viscosity, and density variations, we utilize the mean momentum balance and mean thermal balance equations to develop integral transformations that account for the impact of variable fluid properties. These transformations are then applied inversely to predict the friction and heat transfer coefficients, leveraging the universality of passive scalars transport theory. Our proposed approach is validated using a comprehensive dataset from direct numerical simulations, covering both heating and cooling conditions up to a friction Reynolds number of approximately $\Rey_\tau\approx 3200$. The predicted friction and heat transfer coefficients closely match DNS data with an accuracy margin of 1-2\%, representing a significant improvement over the current state of the art., Comment: Additional resources available at: http://www.thermoturb.com

We derive explicit formulas for the mean profiles of temperature (modeled as a passive scalar) in forced turbulent convection, as a function of the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The derivation leverages on the observed universality of the inner-layer thermal eddy diffusivity with respect to Reynolds and Prandtl number variations and across different flows, and on universality of the passive scalar defect in the core flow. Matching of the inner- and outer-layer expression yields a smooth compound mean temperature profile. We find excellent agreement of the analytical profile with data from direct numerical simulations of pipe and channel flows under various thermal forcing conditions, and over a wide range of Reynolds and Prandtl numbers.

Microvortex generators are passive control devices smaller than the boundary layer thickness that energise the boundary layer to prevent flow separation with limited induced drag. In this work, we use direct numerical simulations (DNSs) to investigate the effect of the Reynolds number in a supersonic turbulent boundary layer over a microramp vortex generator. Three friction Reynolds numbers are considered, up to $Re_{\tau}=2000$, for fixed free-stream Mach number $M_{\infty}=2$ and fixed relative height of the ramp with respect to the boundary layer thickness. The high-fidelity data set sheds light on the instantaneous and highly three-dimensional organisation of both the wake and the shock waves induced by the microramp. The full access to the flow field provided by DNS allows us to develop a qualitative model of the near wake, explaining the internal convolution of the Kelvin-Helmoltz vortices around the low-momentum region behind the ramp. The overall analysis shows that numerical results agree excellently with recent experimental measurements in similar operating conditions and confirms that microramps effectively induce a significantly fuller boundary layer even far downstream of the ramp. Moreover, results highlight significant Reynolds number effects, which in general do not scale with the ramp height. Exascale High Performance Computing (HPC) represents a tremendous opportunity to push the boundaries of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), but despite the consolidated trend towards the use of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), programmability is still an issue. STREAmS-2 (Bernardini et al. Comput. Phys. Commun. 285 (2023) 108644) is a compressible solver for canonical wall-bounded turbulent flows capable of harvesting the potential of NVIDIA GPUs. Here we extend the already available CUDA Fortran backend with a novel HIPFort backend targeting AMD GPU architectures. The main implementation strategies are discussed along with a novel Python tool that can generate the HIPFort and CPU code versions allowing developers to focus their attention only on the CUDA Fortran backend. Single GPU performance is analysed focusing on NVIDIA A100 and AMD MI250x cards which are currently at the core of several HPC clusters. The gap between peak GPU performance and STREAmS-2 performance is found to be generally smaller for NVIDIA cards. Roofline analysis allows tracing this behavior to unexpectedly different computational intensities of the same kernel using the two cards. Parallel performance is measured on the two largest EuroHPC pre-exascale systems, LUMI (AMD GPUs) and Leonardo (NVIDIA GPUs). Strong scalability reveals more than 80% efficiency up to 16 nodes for Leonardo and up to 32 for LUMI. Weak scalability shows an impressive efficiency of over 95% up to the maximum number of nodes tested (256 for LUMI and 512 for Leonardo). This analysis shows that STREAmS-2 is the perfect candidate to fully exploit the power of current pre-exascale HPC systems in Europe, allowing users to simulate flows with over a trillion mesh points, thus reducing the gap between the Reynolds numbers achievable in high-fidelity simulations and those of real engineering applications., Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures

We present pore-resolved direction numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent flows grazing over perforated plates, that closely resemble the acoustic liners found on aircraft engines. Our DNS explore a large parameter space including the effects of porosity, thickness, and viscous-scaled diameter of the perforated plates, at friction Reynolds numbers $Re_\tau = 500$-$2000$, which allows us to develop a robust theory for estimating the added drag induced by acoustic liners. We find that acoustic liners can be regarded as porous surfaces with a wall-normal permeability and that the relevant length scale characterizing their added drag is the inverse of the wall-normal Forchheimer coefficient. Unlike other types of porous surfaces featuring Darcian velocities inside the pores, the flow inside the orifices of acoustic liners is fully turbulent, with a magnitude of the wall-normal velocity fluctuations comparable to the peak in the near wall cycle. We provide clear evidence a fully rough regime for acoustic liners, also confirmed by the increasing relevance of pressure drag. Once the fully rough asymptote is reached, canonical acoustic liners provide an added drag comparable to sand-grain roughness with viscous-scaled height matching the inverse of the viscous-scaled Forchheimer permeability of the plate.

We carry out direct numerical simulation (DNS) of flow in a turbulent square duct by focusing on heat transfer effects, considering the case of unit Prandtl number. Reynolds numbers up to $Re_\tau \approx 2000$ are considered which are much higher than in previous studies, and which yield clear scale separation between inner- and outer-layer dynamics. Close similarity between the behavior of the temperature and the streamwise velocity fields is confirmed as in previous studies related to plane channels and pipes. Just like the mean velocity, the mean temperature is found to exhibit logarithmic layers as a function of the nearest wall, however with a different slope. The most important practical implication is the validity of the traditional hydraulic diameter as the correct reference length for reporting heat transfer data, as we rigorously show here. Temperature and velocity fluctuations also have similar behavior, but apparently logarithmic growth of their inner-scaled peak variances is not observed here unlike in canonical wall-bounded flows. Analysis of the split contributions to the heat transfer coefficient shows that mean cross-stream convection associated with secondary motions is responsible for about $5\%$ of the total. Finally, we use the DNS database to highlight shortcomings of traditional linear closures for the turbulent heat flux, and show that substantial modeling improvement may be in principle obtained by retaining at least the three terms in the vector polynomial integrity basis expansion.

We perform direct numerical simulations of turbulent flow at friction Reynolds number $Re_\tau \approx 500-2000$ grazing over perforates plates with moderate viscous-scaled orifice diameter $d^+\approx40$--$160$ and analyse the relation between permeability and added drag. Unlike previous studies of turbulent flows over permeable surfaces, we find that flow inside the orifices is dominated by inertial effects, and that the relevant permeability is the Forchheimer and not the Darcy one. We find evidence of a fully rough regime where the relevant length scale is the inverse of the Forchheimer coefficient, which can be regarded as the resistance experienced by the wall-normal flow. Moreover, we show that, for low porosities, the Forchheimer coefficient can be estimated with good accuracy using a simple analytical relation.

We investigated the electronic structure of the Si(111)--7$\times$7 surface below 20 K by scanning tunneling and photoemission spectroscopies and by density functional theory calculations. Previous experimental studies have questioned the ground state of this surface, which is expected to be metallic in a band picture because of the odd number of electrons per unit cell. Our differential conductance spectra instead show the opening of an energy gap at the Fermi level and a significant temperature dependence of the electronic properties, especially for the adatoms at the center of the unfaulted half of the unit cell. Complementary photoemission spectra with improved correction of the surface photovoltage shift corroborate the differential conductance data and demonstrate the absence of surface bands crossing the Fermi level at 17 K. These consistent experimental observations point to an insulating ground state and contradict the prediction of a metallic surface obtained by density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation. The calculations indicate that this surface has or is near a magnetic instability, but remains metallic in the magnetic phases even including correlation effects at mean-field level. We discuss possible origins of the observed discrepancies between experiments and calculations.

The Payment Protocol standard BIP70, specifying how payments in Bitcoin are performed by merchants and customers, is supported by the largest payment processors and most widely-used wallets. The protocol has been shown to be vulnerable to refund attacks due to lack of authentication of the refund addresses. In this paper, we give the first formal model of the protocol and formalise the refund address security goals for the protocol, namely refund address authentication and secrecy. The formal model utilises communication channels as abstractions conveying security goals on which the protocol modeller and verifier can rely. We analyse the Payment Protocol confirming that it is vulnerable to an attack violating the refund address authentication security goal. Moreover, we present a concrete protocol revision proposal supporting the merchant with publicly verifiable evidence that can mitigate the attack. We verify that the revised protocol meets the security goals defined for the refund address. Hence, we demonstrate that the revised protocol is secure, not only against the existing attacks, but also against any further attacks violating the formalised security goals., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures. We present STREAmS, an in-house high-fidelity solver for large-scale, massively parallel direct numerical simulations (DNS) of compressible turbulent flows on graphical processing units (GPUs). STREAmS is written in the Fortran 90 language and it is tailored to carry out DNS of canonical compressible wall-bounded flows, namely turbulent plane channel, zero-pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer and supersonic oblique shock-wave/boundary layer interactions. The solver incorporates state-of-the-art numerical algorithms, specifically designed to cope with the challenging problems associated with the solution of high-speed turbulent flows and can be used across a wide range of Mach numbers, extending from the low subsonic up to the hypersonic regime. The use of cuf automatic kernels allowed an easy and efficient porting on the GPU architecture minimizing the changes to the original CPU code, which is also maintained. We discuss a memory allocation strategy based on duplicated arrays for host and device which carefully minimizes the memory usage making the solver suitable for large scale computations on the latest GPU cards. Comparison between different CPUs and GPUs architectures strongly favor the latter, and executing the solver on a single NVIDIA Tesla P100 corresponds to using approximately 330 Intel Knights Landing CPU cores. STREAmS shows very good strong scalability and essentially ideal weak scalability up to 2048 GPUs, paving the way to simulations in the genuine high-Reynolds number regime, possibly at friction Reynolds number $Re_{\tau} > 10^4$. Among Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides, mono and few-layers thick VSe2 has gained much recent attention following claims of intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in this system, which have nonetheless proved controversial. Here, we address the magnetic and chemical properties of Fe/VSe2 heterostructure by combining element sensitive absorption spectroscopy and photoemission spectroscopy. Our x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results confirm recent findings that both native mono/few-layer and bulk VSe2 do not show any signature of an intrinsic ferromagnetic ordering. Nonetheless, we find that ferromagnetism can be induced, even at room temperature, after coupling with a Fe thin film layer, with antiparallel alignment of the moment on the V with respect to Fe. We further consider the chemical reactivity at the Fe/VSe2 interface and its relation with interfacial magnetic coupling.

We study compressible turbulent flow in a circular pipe, at computationally high Reynolds number. Classical related issues are addressed and discussed in light of the DNS data, including validity of compressibility transformations, velocity/temperature relations, passive scalar statistics, and size of turbulent eddies.Regarding velocity statistics, we find that Huang's transformation yields excellent universality of the scaled Reynolds stresses distributions, whereas the transformation proposed by Trettel and Larsson (2016) yields better representation of the effects of strong variation of density and viscosity occurring in the buffer layer on the mean velocity distribution. A clear logarithmic layer is recovered in terms of transformed velocity and wall distance coordinates at the higher Reynolds number under scrutiny ($\Rey_{\tau} \approx 1000$), whereas the core part of the flow is found to be characterized by a universal parabolic velocity profile. Based on formal similarity between the streamwise velocity and the passive scalar transport equations, we further propose an extension of the above compressibility transformations to also achieve universality of passive scalar statistics. Analysis of the velocity/temperature relationship provides evidence for quadratic dependence which is very well approximated by the thermal analogy proposed by Zhang et Al.(2014). The azimuthal velocity and scalar spectra show an organization very similar to canonical incompressible flow, with a bump-shaped distribution across the flow scales, whose peak increases with the wall distance. We find that the size growth effect is well accounted for through an effective length scale accounting for the local friction velocity and for the local mean shear.

We carry out direct numerical simulation of compressible square duct flow in the range of bulk Mach numbers M_b = 0.2-3, and up to friction Reynolds number Re_{\tau} = 500. The effects of flow compressibility on the secondary motions are found to be negligible, as the typical Mach number associated with the cross-stream flow is always less than 0.1. As in the incompressible case, we find that the wall law for the mean streamwise velocity applies with good approximation with respect to the nearest wall, upon suitable compressibility transformation. The same conclusion also applies to a passive scalar field, whereas the mean temperature does not exhibit inertial layers because of nonuniformity of the aerodynamic heating. We further find that the same temperature/velocity relation that holds for planar channels is applicable with good approximation for square ducts, and develop a similar relation between temperature and passive scalars.

We use a direct numerical simulations (DNS) database for turbulent flow in a square duct up to bulk Reynolds number $\Rey_b=40000$, to quantitatively analyze the role of secondary motions on the mean flow structure. For that purpose we derive a generalized form of the identity of Fukagata, Iwamoto and Kasagi (FIK), which allows to quantify the effect of cross-stream convection on the mean streamwise velocity, wall shear stress and bulk friction coefficient. Secondary motions are found to contribute for about $6\%$ of total friction, and to act as a self-regulating mechanism of turbulence whereby wall shear stress nonuniformities induced by corners are equalized, and universality of the wall-normal velocity profiles is established. We also carry out numerical experiments whereby the secondary motions are artificially suppressed, in which case their equalizing role is partially taken by the turbulent stresses.

We study turbulent flows in pressure-driven ducts with square cross-section through direct numerical simulation in a wide enough range of Reynolds number to reach flow conditions which are representative of fully developed turbulence. Numerical simulations are carried out over extremely long integration times to get adequate convergence of the flow statistics, and specifically high-fidelity representation of the secondary motions which arise. The intensity of the latter is found to be in the order of 1-2% of the bulk velocity, and unaffected by Reynolds number variations. The smallness of the mean convection terms in the streamwise vorticity equation points to a simple characterization of the secondary flows, which in the asymptotic high-Re regime are found to be approximated with good accuracy by eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator. Despite their effect of redistributing the wall shear stress along the duct perimeter, we find that secondary motions do not have large influence on the mean velocity field, which can be characterized with good accuracy as that resulting from the concurrent effect of four independent flat walls, each controlling a quarter of the flow domain. As a consequence, we find that parametrizations based on the hydraulic diameter concept, and modifications thereof, are successful in predicting the duct friction coefficient.

We develop a high-fidelity numerical solver for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with the main aim of highlighting the predictive capabilities of low-diffusive numerics for flows in complex geometries. The space discretization of the convective terms in the Navier-Stokes equations relies on a robust energy-preserving numerical flux, and numerical diffusion inherited from the AUSM scheme is added limited to the vicinity of shock waves, or wherever spurious numerical oscillations are sensed. The solver is capable of conserving the total kinetic energy in the inviscid limit, and it bears sensibly less numerical diffusion than typical industrial solvers, with incurred greater predictive power, as demonstrated through a series of test cases including DNS, LES and URANS of turbulent flows. Simplicity of implementation in existing popular solvers such as OpenFOAM is also highlighted.

We develop a semi-implicit algorithm for time-accurate simulation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with special reference to wall-bounded flows. The method is based on linearization of the partial convective fluxes associated with acoustic waves, in such a way to suppress, or at least mitigate the acoustic time step limitation. Together with replacement of the total energy equation with the entropy transport equation, this approach avoids the inversion of block-banded matrices involved in classical methods, which is replaced by less demanding inversion of standard banded matrices. The method is extended to deal with implicit integration of viscous terms and to multiple space dimensions through approximate factorization, and used as a building block of third-order Runge-Kutta time stepping scheme. Numerical experiments are carried out for isotropic turbulence, plane channel flow, and flow in a square duct. All available data support higher computational efficiency than existing methods, and saving of resources ranging from $85\%$ under low-subsonic flow conditions, to about $50\%$ in supersonic flow.

Scanning tunnelling microscopy and break-junction experiments realize metallic and molecular nanocontacts that act as ideal one-dimensional channels between macroscopic electrodes. Emergent nanoscale phenomena typical of these systems encompass structural, mechanical, electronic, transport, and magnetic properties. This Review focuses on the theoretical explanation of some of these properties obtained with the help of first-principles methods. By tracing parallel theoretical and experimental developments from the discovery of nanowire formation and conductance quantization in gold nanowires to recent observations of emergent magnetism and Kondo correlations, we exemplify the main concepts and ingredients needed to bring together ab initio calculations and physical observations. It can be anticipated that diode, sensor, spin-valve and spin-filter functionalities relevant for spintronics and molecular electronics applications will benefit from the physical understanding thus obtained.
