Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) is a rare congenital heart disease (CHD) that occurs in persons with large intracardiac anatomical defects which may go undetected for many years, consequently results in reduced life expectancies and high mortality in the third and fourth decade of life. Pregnancy in patients with CHD and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is presaged with challenges, and perioperative management of such cases remains a topic of debate. Our case had both, atypical presentation, not diagnosed until her third trimester of third pregnancy and a quick progression to a severe stage with PAH and CorPulmonale. The atypical presentation being persistent polycythemia, raising clinical suspicion and thorough clinical examination revealing differential cyanosis and clubbing of hands and feet in pre-anesthesia checkup (PAC). A multidisciplinary approach clinched the diagnosis, and the use of a novel integrated method for perioperative management incorporating all available literature and modern interventions highlighted the critical role of anesthesiologists at a tertiary care setup. In the late nineteenth century, Ottoman culture witnessed a concerted effort to develop a national literature on par with modern European literature and culture. This was also the time when Ottoman intellectuals began to develop a systematic approach to literary analysis. Debates on the imitation, translation, and adaptation of Western forms were central to this period. This article examines the evolution of the concept and practice of imitation as part of these debates. This detailed analysis of the theoretical discourse surrounding the concepts of imitation and authenticity contributes to the broader field of literary theory and comparative literature. By introducing the theoretical rigor inherent in Ottoman-Turkish intellectual practice and highlighting its specific conceptual tradition, the article not only bridges the gap of non-Western critical thought in contemporary literary history, but also offers a fresh perspective on the much-debated East–West paradigms and cross-cultural approaches in literary studies and beyond. In recent years, the role of translation in the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah) has become the focus of increasing scholarly attention. Often, the maskilic engagement with translation is viewed as an unambiguous route to modernity and to modern Jewish literature. But while the maskilim’s utilization of translation as a means for cultural innovation is now almost a truism among literary historians, their hesitations surrounding the importation of foreign works into the Hebrew literary sphere have been largely overlooked. This article discusses the translation of biblical apocrypha in the early Haskalah. It argues that the tangential position of translation in general, and the translation of biblical apocrypha in particular, posited this literary activity as an especially productive platform for unpacking concerns surrounding the means, forms, and languages of interreligious dialogue. This article examines how one of modern Japanese literature's inaugural texts envisions Japan's geographical self-image. The focus here is on Ukishiro monogatari (Floating Castle) by Meiji statesman Yano Ryūkei (1851–1931). Ukishiro monogatari tells the story of an adventure undertaken by Japanese men with a shared political objective who are diversely skilled in areas such as military expertise, medicine, geography, and technology. They are so dissatisfied with the delay in Japan's territorial expansion that in 1878 they travel to Southeast Asia as the first step in an ambitious attempt to establish Japanese territory in central Africa. By exploring why and how the crew of the Ukishiro heads to Africa, this article argues that the Ukishiro crew's plans take shape in relation to their drive to eschew Japan's status as an island nation (deislandization) and establish Japan as a continent (pseudocontinent). Even before its founding, town hall meetings have been woven into the fabric of American politics as a quintessential tool in a representative democracy. We might expect legislators would host these events with routine frequency; however, our research shows this conventional wisdom is inaccurate. While town halls may strengthen the legislator‐constituent relationship, they also carry risk, especially in our polarized political climate. We argue the decision to engage with constituents in this way is a two‐step process: first, legislators decide whether to participate in town halls or not; second, they determine the frequency (and modality) of these interactions. We consider several factors to explain the variation of town hall participation among members of Congress, including partisanship and gender, as well as several electoral and district‐level factors. By combining a unique data set of nearly 11,000 congressional town hall meetings from 2017 to 2022 (115th–117th Congresses) with biographical and political information about legislators and their districts, we uncover compelling evidence to suggest legislators make strategic calculations of whether to participate in town hall meetings and how to do so. The subject of this article are patients with ankylosing spondylitis and the possibilities of improving the control of morning pain and stiffness characteristic of the disease by applying the principles of chronopharmacology. Chronopharmacology uses knowledge of biological rhythms to develop an optimal pharmacotherapeutic plan. The aim was to study and summarize the modern medical literature on the subject by means of the methods of analysis of the information obtained by keywords in specialized electronic medical databases. In conclusion, it can be said that the results of the study of the available literature show the importance of applying the principles of chronopharmacology to achieve optimal pain control, manage morning stiffness and improve therapeutic results in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Purpose: Modern slavery in global value chains is an emerging topic of interest across various fields, including in international business, but is often fragmented in its approach. This study aims to provide a practical framework for studying relationships between participants in global value chains by exploring the nexus of three concepts – vulnerability, resilience and empowerment (VRE) – in the context of modern slavery. Design/methodology/approach: This article offers a deductive thematic analysis of 51 empirical and conceptual business research studies on modern slavery in global value chains published until mid-2021 according to the three categories of interest at the micro (within individuals and organisations), meso (between individuals and organisations) and macro (structural) levels. Findings: The findings have informed the development of three themes, each of which is an opportunity for future research with clear policy implications: a reductionist approach to vulnerability obscures its complexity; externalising the empowerment process and locating it outside of the agency of workers serves to further disempower them; and focusing exclusively on organisational resilience conceals the essentiality of resilience within individuals, communities and societies. Originality/value: This article is among the first to extend the focus of business literature on modern slavery in global value chains beyond its current largely facile engagement with VRE, offering an original descriptive VRE typology to engage with the nexus between these three concepts. This article looks into both the theological themes of mission and conversion in modern literature and also mentions their development in the following two books: The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin and The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates. The research, by the detail and in-depth analysis of these books, exposes the spiritual growth and the quest for meaning in the narratives that are associated, on the one hand, with individual belief and, on the other hand, with wider social contexts. The issue of conversion in these publications is a very fertile source for the understanding of the complicated link between private faith and communal identity as well as how mission literature progresses to addressing the current existential dilemmas. Among everything else, the paper dissects the theological cloth through which such stories are woven, and brings up many issues related to the role of these stories in the distribution of faith, the way to salvation, and the idea of personal transcendence. The topic "The Consequences Caused by Colonialism in the Psychology of the Different Identity Carriers of Modern English Literature" explores how colonialism has impacted the psychological and cultural identities of various groups represented in contemporary English literature. The exploration of these themes in literature not only reflects historical realities but also prompts readers to reconsider contemporary issues of race, power, and belonging in a post-colonial context. This essay analyses the intersection of the novel and neoliberalism as a relation of friction (Tsing). Whereas former studies of literature and neoliberalism imply models of resistance or complicity, the model of friction allows us to read novels as exploring possibilities of life and creativity within the worlds of neoliberal reification. We apply this model to contemporary autofiction: Kamers antikamers by Niña Weijers and How Should a Person Be? by Sheila Heti. Differing from idealist accounts of neoliberalism and a capitalist view of the subject as ‘entrepreneur of the self’, we engage a materialist approach that looks at the subject as a ‘gamer’ (Wark) whose affective and cognitive skills get reified into information. We conclude that both novels foreground the desire to find possibilities of life in affective attachments, which in their turn open up possibilities of difference and creativity in the context of neoliberal abstraction and alienation. Ancient Roman “technical memory” is not (as much of the modern specialist literature would have it) a generative technology of association. Rather it is (as a literal reading of the texts would suggest) a specialized tool for precise serial recall. Modern experimental evidence both confirms the fitness for the purpose of the technique and shows why that purpose is not trivial, as some have suggested. While the mechanism(s) by which the technique operates are not fully understood, a review of the current literature suggests that it would have had the advantage over other mnemonic techniques by virtue of recruiting a variety of cognitive capacities. These likely include spatial/navigational mechanisms and possibly visual/imagery‐based ones as well. Finally, small differences between the method as recorded in the ancient texts and similar methods that have been the subject of laboratory experiments are used to suggest possible directions for further experimentation. Contemporary science fiction and speculative fiction with utopian/dystopian aspects from South Asia and the Caribbean have rarely been studied in tandem. Furthermore, no scholarly work has analyzed such texts produced under conditions of contemporary capitalism in the light of social reproduction theory which considers social reproductive labor that rejuvenates labor power. I study Leila (2017) by the Indian writer Prayaag Akbar, Midnight Robber (2000) by the Jamaican-born Nalo Hopkinson, and Woman World (2018) by the diasporic Indian writer Aminder Dhaliwal to connect social reproductive labor and utopianism and argue that social reproductive labor rejuvenates the labor power of utopian agents in social reproductive spaces such as homes, schools, hospitals, gardens etc. resisting dystopian conditions, nurturing hope, and rejuvenating utopian thinking. I question how utopianism is related to social reproductive labor in postcolonial contexts of the Global South, and propose that 1) dystopian scenarios are brought about by control of social reproductive spaces and 2) progress/betterment is actualized with renewal and rejuvenation via social reproductive labor. I contend that relating twenty-first-century utopianism to social reproduction is a valuable and novel approach, especially in postcolonial contexts where conditions of labor have been determined by complex histories of colonialism, enslavement, and indentured labor. This paper explores reproductive justice themes in different works of Black literature and juxtaposes that literature with modern scholarship to consider a reproductive justice agenda for public health researchers. Incorporating multiple disciplines including public health, critical geography, and anthropology, this paper goes on to suggest that public health researchers would benefit from engagement with works from beyond academia. Even though classic literature has cultural and educational value in heritage education, students often have trouble becoming interested because of the archaic language, a lack of good learning materials, the idea that the literature is not relevant, and complicated plots. This research aims to enhance heritage education by identifying barriers and drivers in youth engagement with classic Thai literature and exploring how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles could be applied to increase motivation in learning classic literature through multimedia. Ten interviews with experts, 100 on-site questionnaires filled out by students aged 15–25 years, and a multimedia e-book were used together in this mixed-methods study. As a case study, the researchers asked both experts and students to read the Thai classic poem "Phra Aphai Mani: Escaping from the Sea Witch" and make suggestions for how it could be better. The results show that there are barriers to heritage education, such as 'the story is not connected to the present' (mean = 4.52/5), 'archaic vocabulary and language barriers' (mean = 4.36/5), and 'learning materials' (mean = 4.25/5). Surprisingly, Thai students showed more positive attitudes towards literature courses than expected based on international trends. Key drivers for enhancing heritage education include 'classic literature in modern, easy-to-read language' (mean = 4.65/5), 'including multimedia' (mean = 4.58/5), 'the plot/story adapted to the current era' (mean = 4.50/5), and 'new presenting technologies' (mean = 4.49/5). Next, as an innovative way to improve heritage education, this study developed a free e-book titled "Phra Aphai Mani: Escaping from the Sea Witch", which includes motion graphics and other multimedia elements. This research contributes to knowledge by demonstrating how UDL can be applied to classic literature within heritage education, enhancing understanding of student needs, and creating more effective, inclusive multimedia teaching methods for preserving and transmitting cultural heritage. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used to accomplish complex tasks, including the creation of artworks and entertainment products. Our focus here is on user responses to AI systems as authors of fictional stories. Across two experiments, we examined how the information that a story was written by AI influences narrative transportation and related experiences. In Experiment 1 (N = 325) the information that an AI had created a short story (contemporary fiction) reduced narrative transportation into this story. Experiment 2 (N = 489) was an extended replication in which genre differences (contemporary fiction vs. science fiction) were addressed. As expected, ostensible AI authorship reduced transportation, but this effect was qualified by genre: Whereas the AI-authorship effect was replicated for contemporary fiction stories, transportation did not differ between human and AI authorship when participants read science fiction stories. Across both experiments, individual differences (openness, affinity for technology and attitude toward AI) did not moderate the effect of AI authorship on any of the dependent variables. Key ideas are presented in this paper in a suddenly, it's a different story style, intended to reflect the contemporary role of fiction in relating to missionary work. Literature and missiology for our century carries on its purpose. Using three key texts: Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Gilead by Marilynne Robinson and The River Between by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, the implications of whether literary narratives can engage with theological, ethical, and post-colonial challenges that today moot Christian missions are analysed. Based on literary theory, this study considers how fiction can help us to understand mission practice, offers alternative views of cultural encounters, faith and identity in the globalizing world. The contradiction and possibilities inherent in missionary work are aired as the paper contends that literature can also provide further insights into this area of human endeavour. We develop a new approach for estimating average treatment effects in observational studies with unobserved group-level heterogeneity. We consider a general model with group-level unconfoundedness and provide conditions under which aggregate balancing statistics—group-level averages of functions of treatments and covariates—are sufficient to eliminate differences between groups. Building on these results, we re-interpret commonly used linear fixed-effect regression estimators by writing them in the Mundlak form as linear regression estimators without fixed effects but including group averages. We use this representation to develop Generalized Mundlak Estimators that capture group differences through group averages of (functions of) the unit-level variables and adjust for these group differences in flexible and robust ways in the spirit of the modern causal literature. Cough suddenly and frequently helps to remove mucus, irritants, foreign substances, and bacteria from the airways. It can be a symptom of a respiratory infection like the common cold, bronchitis, tuberculosis, influenza, smoking, or other health issues. Contemporary texts describe several kinds of coughs, including acute, chronic, and subacute coughs, coughs that produce or do not produce mucus, and specific types like Reflex cough, voluntary cough, and evoked cough. In Unani texts, cough is referred to as diseases rather than symptoms. it is also called as "Sual" in Arabic, "Surfa" in Persian, khansi in Hindi, and cough in English. In Unani medicine, Sual is attributed to three causes: Ashab-e-badiya (extrinsic factor), Asbab-i- Wassila (intrinsic factor), and Iltehab (inflammation). The primary categories of Sual identified in Unani texts are Sual yabis and Sual Ratab, which are further subdivided into various types. The translation of the Shandong dialect, specifically in the novel Red Sorghum authored by Mo Yan and translated by Howard Goldblatt, posed significant challenges to both translators and readers due to its local Chinese cultural richness. Previous researches mainly focused on its traditional translation strategies including foreignization and domestication. Exploration of the aesthetic value of dialect and its cultural representations in modern literature is a relatively new area of research yet to be developed. This paper revealed that translation operates in a complicated three-dimensional structure of translator (aesthetic subject), translated text (aesthetic object), and culture (social environment). In the process of translating dialect, the aesthetic experience and the Aesthetic Regulation Devices (ARD) adopted by the translator, as well as the beauty of characterization and symbolization come into play. Therefore, aesthetic values and cultural uniqueness are represented not only on the linguistic, but also on the spiritual level by contrasting the purity of the villagers in rural China and the brutality of the social turbulence that surrounds them. The paper demonstrated that dialect translation involves a multifaceted and dynamic equivalence between source and target language. The research findings indicated that translation techniques of domestication and foreignization are utilized significantly more often (82%) than the strategy of ARD (18%) during the translation process. This imbalance in strategy usage may result in a deficient representation of aesthetic and cultural values. This paper traces the acoustic imagination of modern Chinese literature, specifically through a close examination of the writings of Liu Yichang from wartime Chongqing. From 1942 to 1945, Liu worked as a radio transcriber prior to his literary stardom. He transcribed and translated English radio broadcasts into Chinese articles that would appear in print the day after they were broadcast, while writing intermittently for literary magazines. This paper analyses how the close listening – or the process of detecting and decoding information from noise – emerged out of wartime intelligence, governing Liu’s creative process. I argue that the desire to trace the source of sound is the driving force of the narrative in Liu’s short stories and prose. Furthermore, this paper studies the way in which Liu’s inattentive mode of listening transformed noise into productive disturbance that ensure a more active readership. By arguing for the central place for the acoustic aesthetics in Liu’s works composed between 1945 to 1950, this article constructs an interpretive frame that invites us to think about historical aural subjectivity modulated by the expressive and affective potential of wartime radio; and to explore the aesthetics of noise that emerged from new techniques of listening. In this article, I examine the ambivalent relation between sissies and trans women in historical and contemporary trans cultural production. Sissification porn depicts a forced-feminization fetish in which a man is "nonconsensually" transformed into a girlish bimbo. His masculinity and selfhood are "negated" through fantasies of masochistic feminized embodiment. Trans-exclusionary feminists claim that sissy porn induces gender dysphoria in its viewers and converts unsuspecting cis men into trans women through sissification. Rather than simply repudiating any relation between the trans woman and the sissy, I insist on tarrying with the negativity of sissification and the bad affects saturating this relation as the figure of the sissy haunts trans archives. Recent fiction and criticism by Imogen Binnie, Torrey Peters, Alison Rumfitt, and Andrea Long Chu reveal an ambivalent intimacy between the trans woman and the sissy. In sitting with this ambivalence, I critique a desexualized (trans)gender identity without dissolving the negativity of the sissy into a countercultural, queer pleasure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The United Kingdom European Union membership or, in common parlance, Brexit referendum, held in the United Kingdom on 23rd June 2016, was an unprecedented event in European politics. This article analyses a literary corpus of long fiction, known as BrexLit, which have all drawn inspiration from this poll and its subsequent consequences for British society. Novels such as Ali Smith's Autumn (2017), Anthony Cartwright's The Cut (2017), Mohsin Hamid's Exit West (2017), Jonathan Coe's Middle England (2018), John Lanchester's The Wall (2019) or Ian McEwan's The Cockroach (2019), and others, will be examined through the lens of Posthuman Studies to establish the numerous intersections that can be identified within these texts' realist and speculative worldviews. BrexLit questions traditional norms, such as the Humanist conception of the white man being the center of the universe, as well as it provides representation for migratory movements. In fact, migratory and refuge issues will form the centerpiece of this study as the majority of these novels challenge the abundant political discourses against the "Other" that have flourished before, during and after the Brexit campaign. In Tessa Hadley's The Past (2016), a ruined cottage evokes the dilapidated structure featured in William Wordsworth's poem "The Ruined Cottage" (1797–98), a poem that privileges the male gaze and male Romantic imagination. I argue Hadley subverts the Romantic tropes bound up in these patriarchal structures by deploying the tropes in such a way as to transfer the powers of perception and imagination to female characters. Through this gynocentric redeployment, Hadley suggests how modern women might surpass Wordsworth's Margaret in their potential to construct realities in which they have agency while simultaneously reminding us how women remain oppressed by male conceptions of reality. Reading "The Ruined Cottage" alongside The Past also reveals poetry as an under-recognized element of Hadley's literary lineage and illuminates how this contemporary fiction writer approaches the modernist dual imperative of innovation and inheritance. Reading Hadley's examination of Romanticism's androcentric poetic legacy in the context of her modernist heritage positions her as a metamodernist writer. My reading of The Past suggests that a full consideration of modernist continuities and metamodernist practice in contemporary fiction should include poetry, as well as prose, and lineages that predate the twentieth century. More powerful and influential than some smaller nations, multinational corporations exert a tremendous influence on the functioning of contemporary global society. From as far back as the dawn of capitalist modernity, proto-corporations furthered the ends of empire, bringing massive foreign populations and swathes of territory under economic and political control. This essay analyzes how recent works of sub-Saharan African fiction have conceptualized the corporation as functioning in a fundamentally imperialistic manner within the global system of neoliberal capitalism. In analyzing the novels How Beautiful We Were and Congo Inc., it considers to what extent these works see the operations of corporations within Africa as part of a long line of imperialistic exploitation of labor and resources stretching back to the days of the large European colonial empires, and to what extent these works see the machinations of the corporation as a novel socioeconomic phenomenon of our age of frenetic transnational flows of capital and information. In doing so it also asks how these novels envision possibilities of local-level resistance to these forms of corporate economic predation that threaten to stir up military conflict and despoil local ecosystems. The article discusses intertextuality in Stanisław Lem's novel, Memoirs Found in a Bathtub (1961). An analysis of Memoirs discovers references to numerous works of literature (Kafka, Borges, Gombrowicz, Mrożek, Chekhov, Gogol, Shakespeare, Mickiewicz, Ray Bradbury, Genet, and Jan Potocki, among others), philosophy (Cassirer, Peirce, Lévinas), religion, popular culture, and unwritten lore (the Bible, Greek mythology, songs, proverbs, aphorisms, rhymes, and toasts). However, careful examination reveals that it is extremely difficult to draw the line between connections intended by the author and those which are accidental or read into the text by critics or readers. That is because in Memoirs, Lem designed a work which is intertextually open, capable of establishing a virtually infinite number of relations with other texts and contexts, and encouraging its reader to recognize all possible links. Intertextual references operate here collectively rather than as relationships with individual works. Locating Memoirs in a vast, practically unlimited intertextual space does not lead to specific, premeditated meanings, but rather serves to multiply potential senses. In the article, this intertextual strategy is paired with Lem's theory that the meaning of a literary work is unstable and is fully developed in the process of individual reception. Vulnerability to modern slavery in Indonesia, particularly driven by poverty and discrimination against minority groups, has become a primary concern in the context of information transparency. This study aims to investigate the factors that can support the reporting quality of modern slavery in Indonesia, namely the industry sector, profitability, social responsibility commitment, and gender diversity as the moderating variable. The research utilized a sample of 225 companies listed on the Indonesia stock exchange (IDX) from 2020 to 2022. Data were collected from financial reports and sustainability reports as well as the Refinitiv Eikon database. Panel data regression analysis was conducted to analyze the determinants of the disclosure quality. The research findings indicate that high‐risk industry sectors tend to disclose less information regarding modern slavery, with this outcome having a partially negative impact. However, profitability is not associated with the quality of voluntary modern slavery disclosure. In contrast, corporate responsibility commitment is positively associated. Additionally, this study reveals that gender diversity does not moderate the association between the industry sector, profitability, and corporate responsibility commitment with the disclosure quality of modern slavery. This research contributes to the growing literature on the accountability of modern slavery in an emerging country context through institutional theory and gender socialization theory lenses by identifying the firm‐level factors to enhance corporate disclosure in this area. This study also contributes to corporate understanding of modern slavery issues within supply chains. With growing attention to this problem, the awareness of labor exploitation within corporate supply chains is also increasing. This essay’s theoretical goal is to examine the possibilities of conceptualizing literary cultures of Eastern Europe as a world-literary region in its own right. This region, formerly part of the so-called “Second World,” has virtually disappeared from the comparative literary scene after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. At the same time, the end of the Cold War coincided with the renewal of the debates about “world literature,” where the old opposition between “West” and “East” has been redrawn along the lines of “North” and “South.” This article focuses on a particular case in-between – Eastern Europe – as it takes on the double issue of “internal Orientalism” within Europe and the homogenizing effects of the privileged status of the novel in world-literary theory today. This paper argues that the blot in A Gambler’s Anatomy exists in a long line of deep metaphors in Lethem’s work, an ancestor of “Lack” in As She Climbed Across the Table (1997) and the giant hole in the center of Manhattan in Chronic City. In the context of this story, which casts Stolarsky as the pantomimic capitalist villain, it can be interpreted as an ideological blind spot which prevents the protagonist from recognizing his entrapment in a cycle of economic dependency. Its removal should signal an awakening, therefore, but Lethem resists this move. Instead, Bruno is forced to don a mask and is ensnared within a Stolarsky empire which seems to have no outer limits. Even the anti-capitalist riot in which Bruno becomes involved might well have been orchestrated by the arch-capitalist himself. The cocktail party problem refers to people’s auditory scene analysis in the complex auditory scene of everyday life in acoustics, which has also been addressed in modern literature. In this article, I define the literary cocktail party as a literary soundscape characterised by noise, with the dynamics of attention motivating its sound events and overall material relationality. Taking Virginia Woolf’s Between the Acts as an example, this article analyses how the interaction of words and sounds works with the dynamics of passive and active attention – two types of attention working in the bottom-up and top-down neural processes of the brain respectively. In different stages of the literary cocktail party, the development of sound events incorporates sonic materiality into the understanding of literary form, promotes the literary effect of defamiliarisation and creates relations in the soundscape. In the end, the article proposes ‘dip listening’ as a productive listening method for modern literary soundscape that is capable of not only generating an embodied sense of epiphany in daily experience but also creates the betweenness among various agencies in a shared tiredness. Introduction: The study explores the effectiveness of teaching English literature to Hong Kong undergraduate students, particularly in a general education course titled "Fiction and Life: Understanding Human Development." This course marked the first exposure for students to book-length fiction in English and critical response written in English, revealing the efficacy of using fictional works as content-based ESL instruction at the tertiary level in Hong Kong. Methods: Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study included questionnaires distributed to 310 students and thematic analysis of semistructured interview data. Results: Findings indicate a largely positive attitude toward the reading and writing experience, suggesting benefits for ESL teaching and learning in Asia. Discussion: The study advocates for incorporating English literature into the general education curriculum to foster a more organic and contextualized language acquisition process. This research uniquely contributes to the field by examining student perceptions in a self-financed tertiary institution context, offering new insights that have not been explored before in Hong Kong's ESL landscape. Often compared to Yasunari Kawabata or Yukio Mishima for her narrative art and ability to deal with complex issues concerning solitude and loss, Yōko Ogawa distinguishes within the context of Japanese contemporary fiction through her exquisite technique of suggestion and also for her unusual dystopian discourse. Her novels, from Tender Whispers (1996) or The Housekeeper and the Professor (2003) to Hotel Iris (1996) approaches delicate and unusual characters and analyze profound states of mind and tensed human relationships, in order to offer the readers a convincing image of nowadays problems and challenges. On the other hand, the writer proves her capacity of depicting a dystopian universe with all its characteristics and contradictions, her novel The Memory Police (1994) being an extraordinary example of a deep meditation on numerous contemporary situations. This paper discusses how the concept of norms of speech and thought presentation relates to speech and thought presentation in actual texts with reference to the examination of two corpora, Semino and Short's discourse presentation corpus, and a corpus of contemporary present-tense fiction. Through this approach, we review the meanings of the norms in each kind of discourse presentation. Leech and Short suggest that the norm of speech presentation is direct speech (DS) and the norm of thought presentation is indirect thought (IT). Examining their claim quantitatively and qualitatively, we will discuss how forms of speech and thought presentation are chosen in different socio-lingual contexts. Our examination strongly indicates that DS predominantly serves as the norm for speech presentation. However, thought presentation exhibits a higher degree of variability, influenced by genre, text type, and narrative tense and mode, and thus our investigation did not ascertain a singular category that consistently prevails quantitatively over others in thought presentation. This article examines the aesthetic and economic forms of judgment that guided the Japanese literature translation program at the American publisher Alfred A. Knopf Inc. in the 1950s—1970s. During these years, the editor Harold Strauss coordinated Knopf's ambitious translation program that made dozens of recently written Japanese novels available in English to an American audience. This article provides a fresh perspective on Knopf's well-known Japanese literature translation program by understanding it to be an illuminating case study that reveals how the practical business of cultural commerce mixes aesthetic and economic modes of valuation, producing provocative connections that link what might otherwise seem to be the antagonistic realms of art and the market. Guided by documents held in the Knopf corporate archive, the article shows how the aesthetics of modern Japanese literature and the economics of publishing each encountered the other in the transactional territory of translation.
