3. QUADRATIC INTERACTION ESTIMATE FOR HYPERBOLIC CONSERVATION LAWS: AN OVERVIEW

Abstract

In a joint work with S. Bianchini [8] (see also [6, 7]), we proved a quadratic interaction estimate for the system of conservation laws [mathematical expression not reproducible], where u : [0, [infinity]) x R [right arrow] [R.sup.n], f : [R.sup.n] [right arrow] [R.sup.n] is strictly hyperbolic, and Tot.Var. ([u.sub.0]) [much less than] 1. For a wavefront solution in which only two wavefronts at a time interact, such an estimate can be written in the form [mathematical expression not reproducible], where [[alpha].sub.j] and [[alpha]'.sub.j] are the wavefronts interacting at the interaction time [t.sub.j], [sigma](*) is the speed, [absolute value of (*)] denotes the strength, and C(f) is a constant depending only on f (see [8, Theorem 1.1] or Theorem 3.1 in the present paper for a more general form). Abstract

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) systems have the potential to reduce emissions from seagoing vessels. However, it is unknown whether ship motions influence the system's operation. In this research, a 1.5 kW SOFC module is operated on an inclination platform that emulates ship motions, to evaluate the influence of static and dynamic inclinations on the system's safety, operation, and lifetime. The test campaign consists of a static inclination test, a dynamic test, a degradation test, and a high acceleration test. There were no interruptions in the power supply during the different tests, and no detectable gas leakages or safety hazards. Although the SOFC does not fail in any test condition, dynamic inclinations result in forced oscillations in the fuel regulation, which propagate through the system by different feedback loops in the control architecture, leading to significant deviations in the operational parameters of the system. Additionally, for motion periods from 16 to 26 s, reoccurring exceedance of the fuel utilisation results in a gradual reduction of the power supply. Abstract

To present our experience of 10 patients with extra-adrenal retroperitoneal paragangliomas, and assess prognostic tests.Retrospective study of casenotes.University hospital, Italy.10 Patients who presented with paragangliomas between 1970 and 1991.Histological and immunohistochemical results, and outcome.All tumours were completely resected and there was no operative mortality. Of the 8 patients who had no metastases at presentation 3 died of recurrence 3, 5, and 10 years later, respectively; 4 were alive and free of disease 2-7 years after diagnosis. The 2 patients with synchronous bone metastases at presentation died 1 and 4 years later. Immunohistochemical analysis of type I cells (chromogranin A and neurone-specific enolase) showed little correlation with progression of disease, but there was a correlation between the presence of type II cells (S100 protein) and good prognosis.Excision is the treatment of choice for paraganglioma. Immunohistochemical techniques may provide useful information about prognosis, in particular about those patients who are at increased risk of recurrence. Long term follow up is essential, because successful management of recurrence is dependent on early recognition.

38. Class III gynecomastia in pediatric age: a new modified surgical treatment.

Abstract

Background: Prepubertal gynecomastia is an extremely rare condition usually requiring surgical treatment, especially in case of class III gynecomastia. This study presents cases treated with a new surgical treatment.Methods: From 2010 at our institution, gynecomastia is treated surgically using a modified technique of periareolar incision. Aesthetic results and possible complications of this technique are reported.Results: Five patients were treated at the authors' unit for class III gynecomastia between January 2010 and December 2011. All patients were properly treated without the need of further surgery for skin resection. One patient developed seroma, treated with suction; one patient showed hematoma, treated with hot packs for 3 weeks. All patients and their parents were satisfied of the aesthetic results obtained. All patients resumed sport activities 4 weeks after surgery. It was not possible to observe intraoperative complications.Conclusion: The technique used meets safety and efficacy standards for the treatment of this type of pediatric gynecomastia. It also offers the best possible aesthetic results with minimum complications which can be treated without the need of further surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

40. Male Breast Carcinoma: Review of a Multicenter Series of 150 Cases

Abstract

The authors report on a consecutive retrospective series of 150 male breast cancers. Clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic features are compared over time and with respect to a large consecutive series of female breast cancers. Both age at diagnosis and tumor stage were more advanced in males than in females. Poor alertness of both men and doctors for this unfrequent disease may account for such a delay in diagnosis. The use of mammography increased over time and sonography or cytology were frequently and successfully employed in the last decade. Unfortunately no improvement of tumor stage at diagnosis was observed over time in the present series. A time trend was also evident for the type of surgical and postoperative treatment. Modified radical mastectomy and adjuvant chemo- or hormone therapy were increasingly adopted, although Halsted operation and postoperative radiotherapy were still common in the last decade due to the relatively high proportion of locally advanced T3-4 cancers. Both disease-free and overall survival were worse in men than in women, even after adjustment by stage at diagnosis. This study suggests that male breast cancer has a worse prognosis with respect to female breast cancer and provides no complete explanation of this finding, except for an intrinsic higher aggressivity. No evidence was found which may justify a different diagnostic or therapeutic approach with respect to female breast cancer.
