Orientador: Ricardo Luís Doretto Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Física Gleb Wataghin Resumo: Nesse trabalho, estudamos uma fase ferromagnética de banda plana do modelo de Haldane-Hubbard na rede hexagonal através de um método de bosonização desenvolvido recentemente para isolantes de Chern e isolantes topológicos Z2. Em particular, procuramos determinar o espectro de excitação das ondas de spin. Consideramos configurações do modelo de Haldane-Hubbard onde as bandas eletrônicas (limite não-interagente) de mais baixa energia são quase-planas e com fator de preenchimento (limite não-interagente) igual a 1/4. Duas versões distintas do modelo de Haldane-Hubbard foram estudadas, uma que quebra a simetria de inversão temporal (isolante de Chern correlacionado) e uma segunda que preserva a simetria de inversão temporal (isolante topológico correlacionado). Através do método de bosonização, mostramos que o modelo de Haldane-Hubbard é mapeado em um modelo bosônico efetivo e interagente, cujo termo quadrático nos permite determinar o espectro de excitação das ondas de spin em uma aproximação harmônica. Para o isolante de Chern correlacionado, encontramos que o espectro de excitação é constituído por dois ramos, apresentando um modo de Goldstone e pontos Dirac no centro e nos pontos K e K' da primeira zona de Brillouin, respectivamente. Para o isolante topológico correlacionado, verificamos que o espectro de excitação também é formado por dois ramos, porém ambos apresentam energia de gap finita e ausência de pontos de Dirac. De fato, para o isolante topológico, verificamos que é possível definir operadores bosônicos associados a dois tipos diferentes de excitações de spin, isto é, excitações que alteram (mixed-lattice excitations) e que preservam (same-lattice excitations) os índices de subrede dos operadores de spin. Além disso, consideramos os efeitos no espectro das ondas de spin associados (i) a uma diferença nos valores das energias de repulsão locais e (ii) à presença de um termo de energia de um corpo local alternado (termo de massa), ambas as quantidades relacionadas com as duas subredes triangulares. Para ambas as perturbações, encontramos que o espectro das ondas de spin do isolante de Chern correlacionado apresenta um gap de energia nos pontos K e K', em contraste com o caso homogêneo que apresenta pontos de Dirac nessa região do espectro. Para o isolante topológico correlacionado, verificamos pequenas modificações no gap de energia dos pontos K e K', sendo que espectro mantém sua forma quando comparada com o caso não-perturbado. Importante, para o isolante de Chern, também encontramos algumas evidências de uma instabilidade da fase ferromagnética da banda plana na presença do termo de massa. Finalmente, comentamos sobre as diferenças na aplicação do método de bosonização para os isolantes de Chern e topológicos correlacionados para modelos de Hubbard topológicos nas redes quadrada e hexagonal Abstract: In this thesis, we study the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of the Haldane-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice within a bosonization scheme for both Chern and Z2 topological insulators, focusing on the calculation of the spin-wave excitation spectrum. We consider a spinfull Haldane-Hubbard model with the noninteracting lower bands in a nearly flat band limit, previously determined for the spinless Haldane model, and at 1/4-filling of its corresponding noninteracting limit. Two configurations of the Haldane-Hubbard model, one that breaks time-reversal symmetry (correlated Chern insulator) and a second one that preserves time-reversal symmetry (correlated Z2 topological insulator), are discussed. Within the bosonization scheme, the Haldane-Hubbard model is mapped into an effective interacting boson model, whose quadratic term allows us to determine the spin-wave spectrum at the harmonic approximation. For the correlated Chern insulator, we show that the excitation spectrum has two branches with a Goldstone mode and Dirac points at center and at the K and K' points of the first Brillouin zone, respectively. In contrast, for the correlated Z2 topological insulator, the excitation spectrum also has two branches, but both of them are gapped and there is no Dirac points. Indeed, for the correlated Z2 topological insulator, we found that it is possible to define boson operators associated with two distinct spin-flip excitations, one that changes (mixed-lattice excitations) and a second one that preserves (same-lattice excitations) the index related with the two sublattices. We also consider the effects on the spin-wave spectrum due to an energy offset in the on-site Hubbard repulsion energies and due to the presence of an staggered on-site energy term (mass term), both quantities associated with the two triangular sublattices. For both perturbations, we found that an energy gap opens at the K and K' points, dissolving the Dirac points found in the spin-wave spectrum of the correlated Chern insulator. For the correlated Z2 topological insulator, a mild modification of the gap at the same points were found, with the overall spectrum retaining its shape. Moreover, for the Chern insulator, we also found some evidences for an instability of the flat-band ferromagnetic phase in the presence of the staggered on-site energy term. Quando um sistema é exposto a uma desordem moderada ou forte a função de onda eletrônica se localiza transformando metais ou supercondutores em isolantes. Neste trabalho, investigamos as transições superfluido-isolante e metal-isolante através do emaranhamento quântico. Utilizamos o modelo de Hubbard fermiônico unidimensional para descrever as nanoestruturas desordenadas, obtendo os valores de energia e densidade através da teoria do Funcional da Densidade e quantificando o grau de emaranhamento do sistema através da entropia linear. Para a transição superfluido-isolante verificamos que ela pode ser desencadeada pela concentração de impurezas, pela intensidade de desordem ou pela densidade média de partículas. Encontramos uma relação direta entre a concentração crítica da transição e a densidade média e mostramos que a classificação da transição e a existência de um V minimo depende se o sistema está em um estado de localização total ou localização ordinária. Na abordagem da termodinâmica fora do equilíbrio verificamos que a extração máxima de trabalho ocorre quando o sistema está exatamente na concentração crítica e que para temperaturas altas só é possível a produção de trabalho. Para a transição metal-isolante verificamos que, diferentemente da transição superfluido-isolante, há uma competição entre U e V pois cada parâmetro contribui de maneira diferente para a fase isolante. Mostramos que a relação entre a concentração crítica e a densidade média para esse caso depende do tipo da transição metal-isolante em questão. The study of quantum phase transitions has aroused interest of theoretical and experimental scientists. When a system is exposed to moderate or strong disorder, the electronic wave function becomes localized, transforming metals or superconductors into insulators. In this thesis, we investigate the superfluid-insulator and metal-insulator transitions th- rough quantum entanglement. We use the one-dimensional fermionic Hubbard model to describe the disordered nanostructures, obtaining the energy and density profiles via Density Functional theory and quantifying the degree of entanglement through the linear entropy. For the superfluid-insulator transition, we showed that it can be triggered by the concentration of impurities, the intensity of disorder or the average density of particles. We found a direct relationship between the critical transition concentration and the average density, and we showed that the order of the transition and the existence of a Vmin depends on whether the system is in a state of total or ordinary localization. In the out- of-equilibrium thermodynamics approach we found that the maximum work extraction occurs when the system is exactly at the critical concentration and for high temperatures only work production is possible. For the metal-insulator transition we verified that unlike the superfluid-insulator transition, there is a competition between U and V due to their different contributions to the insulator phase. We showed that the relationship between the critical concentration and the average density for this case depends on the type of metal-insulator transition.

Orientador: Mário Eusébio Foglio Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Fisica Gleb Wataghin Resumo: Estendeu-se para o Modelo de Anderson Periódico (MAP), uma expansão diagramática em cumulantes, empregada por Hubbard para estudar seu modelo de banda estreita de elétrons fortemente correlacionados. O modelo também foi estendido para considerar estados eletrônicos localizados, com um esquema arbitrário de níveis de energia, que é útil para estudar compostos de valência intermediária como o Eu ou o Tm. Foram derivadas regras para o cálculo do potencial grand canônico e para as Funções de Green (FG) do modelo geral. Nesses cálculos, só aparecem diagramas conectados e as somas sobre os sítios da rede não são restritas. Para gerar as médias cumulantes, é necessário usar os campos externos "fictícios" de Grassmann x. É apresentado um modo simples de estender as regras diagramáticas para o caso em que os campos x são diferentes de zero. A expansão cumulante foi aplicada ao MAP, para uma banda de condução retangular e para uma banda de condução de largura zero (limite atômico), no caso de repulsão infinita entre dois elétrons localizados no mesmo sítio (U = ¥). Foram efetuados cálculos das funções de Green para duas famílias diferentes de diagramas na fase paramagnética: 1) A Aproximação de Cadeias (AC), empregando somente cumulantes de segunda ordem, 2) Aproximação dos Múltiplos Anéis (AMA) que, além das cadeias, considera anéis simples fechados de todos os tamanhos, mas com, no máximo, cumulantes de quatro tempos. Foram calculados a partir das FG, os números de ocupação dos elétrons localizados e dos elétrons de condução, por sítio e por "spin". A falta de completeza e a não analiticidade das FG fora do eixo real foram discutidas e apresentamos novos modos de tratar esses problemas. Foram estudadas as aproximações F -deriváveis. Foi mostrado que a AC é uma F -derivável "exata", no qual a única aproximação usada foi a escolha dos diagramas para o cálculo do funcional F , usado para calcular as FG. Do estudo da AC fica claro que as aproximações F -deriváveis não resolvem o problema da falta de completeza das FG no espaço dos números de ocupação f. Também estudamos uma F -derivável que é uma extensão da AMA, mas, nesse caso, é necessário efetuar uma aproximação adicional que limita os cumulantes usados na aproximação somente até quarta ordem. Neste último caso, os cálculos numéricos foram efetuados somente para o limite atômico, porque o cálculo para a banda larga exige um longo tempo de computação, e a partir dos resultados atômicos, não esperamos que essa aproximação resolva o problema da completeza. Na etapa final dessa pesquisa, foi descoberta uma técnica que resolve o problema da completeza no contexto dos operadores X de Hubbard e apresentamos uma conjectura geral que foi verificada em todos os casos considerados. Foram dados resultados para duas dessas aproximações, tanto para o limite atômico quanto para a banda Abstract: The diagrammatic expansion in cumulants that was employed by Hubbard to study his model of a narrow band of strongly correlated electrons was extended to the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM). The model was also extended by considering localized electronic states with an arbitrary scheme of energy levels: this extension would be useful to study intermediate valence compounds of Eu or Tm with the present formalism. The rules for the diagrammatic calculation of the grand canonical potential and of the Green's functions (GF) for the general model have been derived: only connected diagrams appear in those calculations, and the lattice sums are unrestricted. To generate the cumulant averages it was necessary to employ external fields x that are Grassman variables and it is presented a simple way to extend the diagrammatic rules for the x ¹ 0 case. The cumulant expansion was applied to the P AM for a wide rectangular band of conduction electrons (wide band) and for a conduction band of zero width (atomic limit), in the case of an infinite repulsion between two localized electrons at the same site (U = ¥). Two different families of diagrams were considered to calculate the one-particle GF in the paramagnetic phase: 1) the chain approximation (CHA) employing only second order cumulants, 2) the multiple loop approximation (MLA), that also considers rings of all sizes, but employs at most fourth order cumulants. The occupation numbers per site and per spin of the localized electrons (nf) and of the conduction electrons (nc) are obtained from the GF, and the lack of completeness in the space of localized electrons and the non-analyticity of the GF off the real axis are discussed: new approaches to treat these two problems are presented. The F-derivable approximations were also employed. It was possible to show that CHA is a F-derivable approximation, in which the only approximation is the choice of the diagrams employed to calculate the functional F , from which the GF can be obtained. It was then clear that the F-derivable approximations do not solve the lack of completeness. We have also studied a F-derivable extension of the MLA, but in this case it was necessary to add a further approximation, namely to restrict the cumulants employed to fourth order only. In this last case the numerical calculations were only performed in the atomic limit, because the wide band case would require a rather long time of computation, and from the results in the atomic limit we did not expect that this approximation would solve the completeness problem. In the final stages of the present work a technique that solve the completeness problem in a context of X Hubbard operators was discovered. A general conjecture, that has been verified in alI the cases we considered, is presented. Orientador: Eduardo Miranda Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Física Gleb Wataghin Resumo: Estudamos nesta tese alguns aspectos da transição metal-isolante de Mott no caso desordenado. O modelo no qual baseamos nosso estudo é o modelo de Hubbard desordenado, que é o modelo mais simples a apresentar a transição metal-isolante de Mott. Analisamos esse modelo através da Teoria Dinâmica de Campo Médio Estatística (StatDMFT). Essa teoria é uma extensão natural da Teoria Dinâmica de Campo Médio (DMFT), que foi usada com relativo sucesso nos últimos anos para analisar a transição de Mott no caso limpo. Como no caso dessa última, a StatDMFT incorpora os efeitos de correlação eletrônica apenas nos seus aspetos locais. A desordem é tratada de maneira a incorporar todos os efeitos de localização de Anderson. Com essa técnica, analisamos a transição de Mott desordenada no caso bi-dimensional, usando o Monte Carlo quântico para resolver os problemas de impureza única de Anderson requeridos pela StatDMFT. Encontramos as linhas espinodais nas quais o metal e o isolante deixam de ser meta-estáveis. Também estudamos os padrões espaciais das flutuações de quantidades locais, como a auto-energia e a função de Green local, e mostramos como há o aparecimento de regiões metálicas dentro do isolante e viceversa. Analisamos efeitos de tamanho finito e mostramos que, em consonância com os teoremas de Imry e Ma, a transição de primeira ordem desaparece no limite termodinâmico. Analisamos as propriedades de transporte desse sistema através de um mapeamento a um sistema de resistores aleatórios clássicos e calculamos a corrente média e sua distribuição através da transição metal-isolante. Finalmente, estudamos o comportamento da parede de domínio que se forma entre o isolante e o metal no caso limpo. Isso foi feito através de um modelo de uma cadeia unidimensional conectada a reservatórios, um metálico e um isolante, cada um em uma de suas extremidades. Nesse caso, utilizamos o método da Teoria de Perturbação Iterada para a solução dos modelos de impureza única. Encontramos o comportamento da parede como função da temperatura e das interações Abstract: In this thesis, we studied some aspects of the Mott metal-insulator transition in the disordered case. The model on which we based our analysis is the disordered Hubbard model, which is the simplest model capable of capturing the Mott metal-insulator transition. We investigated this model through the Statistical Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (statDMFT). This theory is a natural extension of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT), which has been used with relative success in the last several years with the purpose of describing the Mott transition in the clean case. As is the case for the latter theory, the statDMFT incorporates the electronic correlation effects only incorporate Anderson localization effects.. With this technique, we analyzed the disordered two-dimensional Mott transition, using Quantum Monte Carlo to solve the associated single-impurity problems. We found the spinodal lines at which metal and insulator cease to be meta-stable. We also studied the spatial fluctuations of local quantities, such as the self-energy and the local Green¿s function, and showed the appearance of metallic regions within the insulator and vice-versa. We carried out an analysis of finite-size effects and showed that, in agreement with the theorems of Imry and Ma, the first-order transition is smeared in the thermodynamic limit. We analyzed transport properties by means of a mapping to a random classical resistor network and calculated both the average current and its distribution across the metalinsulator transition. Finally, we studied the behavior of the domain wall which forms between the metal and the insulator in the clean case. This was done by means of a model of a one-dimensional chain connected to two reservoirs, one metallic and the other insulating, each attached to one of the chain¿s ends. In this case, we used the Iterated Perturbation Theory technique in order to solve the associated singleimpurity problems. Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq The strongly correlated electron systems raise the interest of researchers from different areas. However, one of the main categories of those are the unconventional superconductors, also known as high-Tc superconductors. Characterized by a critical temperature above 32 K, predicted by the BCS theory, those systems generally show typical strongly correlated systems behaviors, such as in cuprates. This category of systems have a rich phase diagram, with many phases and coexistence regimes. The case of cuprates is an example where both charge density wave and superconductivity coexist, while also showing the antiferromagnetic and spin density wave phases. There exists a consensus that the mechanisms that generate the superconductivity on systems like cuprates are directly associated to the other, neighbouring phases to the superconductivity. Thanks to that, studying those phases and their coexistence is of utmost importance to the understanding of those systems. The main objective of this work is to analyze the effects of the repulsive coulomb interaction U on the coexistence between superconductivity and charge density wave phases region. The main characteristic of the superconductor phase is the null resistance below a certain temperature, while the charge density wave is characterized by a periodic charge modulation on the lattice. With the intent of perform this study, a BCS-like model was used, which considers both the CDW and superconductivity phases. To be able to study the model, the Green's functions technique was used, alongside the Matsubara's formalism. However, the utilized model does not consider strong correlations. The fact that the Matsubara's formalism is invariant towards correlations allows the introduction of correlations by replacing the normal state uncorrelated Green's function by a new Green's function, obtained through the Hubbard-I approximation. The Hubbard model is traditionally used to study strongly correlated systems. Utilizing the combination from those analytical techniques, together with programs developed in the Fortan 95 language, the effects of U on the superconductor and charge density wave gaps were studied, on their pure and coexistence regime. The main effect of U that was observed is a suppression on both phases, that tends to destroy the coexistence of them. The effect of the second nearest neighbor hopping t1 and U on the gaps was also verified, where both suffered a partial suppression. On the high values of U limit, there is a stabilization of the values of the occupation, which is equivalent to the half-filling regime, that causes U to have a saturation tendency above a certain U value. It has been observed that a rise on the value of U also requires a rise on the V values, to stabilize both phases. Os sistemas de elétrons fortemente correlacionados despertam interesse de pesquisadores de diversas áreas. Contudo, uma das principais categorias destes são os supercondutores não convencionais, também conhecidos como supercondutores de altas temperaturas. Caracterizados por uma temperatura crítica acima dos 32 K, previstos pela teoria BCS, normalmente apresentam comportamentos típicos de sistemas fortemente correlacionados, como por exemplo, nos cupratos. Esta categoria de sistemas apresenta um riquíssimo diagrama de fases, com diversas fases e regimes de coexistência. O caso dos cupratos é um exemplo onde as fases supercondutora e charge density wave (CDW) coexistem, além de apresentar as fases antiferromagnéticas e spin density wave. Existe um consenso de que os mecanismos que geram a supercondutividade em sistemas como os cupratos estejam diretamente associados às outras fases vizinhas da fase supercondutora, sendo assim, o estudo dessas fases e de sua coexistência é importante para um melhor entendimento desses sistemas. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é estudar os efeitos da interação coulombiana repulsiva U na região de coexistência entre a fase supercondutora e a fase CDW. A principal característica da fase supercondutora é a resistência nula abaixo de uma determinada temperatura, enquanto que a fase charge density wave é caracterizada por um modulamento periódico de carga na rede. Para realizar este estudo, foi utilizada um modelo tipo BCS que leva em consideração as fases CDW e supercondutora. Para tratar o modelo, utilizou-se a técnica das funções de Green no formalismo de Matsubara. Porém, o modelo utilizado não leva em consideração as correlações fortes devido às interações coulombianas. Utiliza-se o fato de que o formalismo é invariante perante a presença de correlações, e as mesmas são introduzidas a partir da substituição da função de Green para o estado normal não correlacionada por uma correlacionada, obtida através do modelo de Hubbard de uma banda, tratado com a aproximação de Hubbard-I. O modelo de Hubbard é tradicionalmente utilizado para estudos de sistemas fortemente correlacionados, tais como os cupratos. Utilizando a combinação destas técnicas analíticas, juntamente com programas desenvolvidos em linguagem Fortran 95, estudou-se os efeitos de U no comportamento dos gaps supercondutor e charge density wave, puros e em coexistência. O principal efeito de U observado foi um desfavorecimento de ambas as fases, que por consequência, tende a destruir a coexistência das duas. Também verificou-se que o hopping de segundos vizinhos t1 tem efeitos semelhantes à interação coulombiana U. Devido à ocupação média por sítio estabilizar no limite de altos valores de U, os efeitos da interação U sofrem uma tendência de saturação a artir de um determinado valor de U. Também foi constatado que o aumento de U requer um aumento no valor do potencial atrativo V , a fim de estabilizar as fases em questão.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar os efeitos da desordem nas proximidades da transição metal-isolante de Mott. Para tanto, utilizamos o modelo de Hubbard desordenado em duas dimensões. A teoria que aplicamos para estudar esse modelo é a Teoria Estatística Dinâmica de Campo Médio, que trata de maneira não-trivial os efeitos de desordem e interação elétron-elétron. A aproximação básica da teoria consiste em descrever os efeitos de interação de maneira local. Nela mapeamos o nosso problema original em vários problemas de uma impureza de Anderson, embebidos em banhos que são determinados através de uma condição de autoconsistência. Esses problemas são resolvidos no nosso trabalho aplicando o método do Monte Carlo Quântico, algoritmo Hirsch-Fye, que faz cálculos em temperatura finita. No nosso estudo conseguimos observar a coexistência de soluções metálicas ruins e isolantes ruins num mesmo sistema, para temperaturas um pouco maiores do que a que determina o ponto crítico da transição de Mott. Relacionamos a condutividade local com as energias locais desordenadas, observando que essas energias funcionam como um potencial químico dependente do sítio que altera localmente a dopagem do sistema. Finalmente, verificamos o aumento do valor da interação crítica com a desordem. Esse trabalho é a primeira implementação numérica da Teoria Estatística Dinâmica de Campo Médio com Monte Carlo Quântico, que é o estado da arte de cálculos de sistemas de uma impureza única. Nesse sentido, nosso trabalho representa um importante primeiro passo na implementação do método e fornece um paradigma inicial do seu poder e das suas limitações Abstract: The main goal of this work is to study the effects of disorder in the proximity of a Mott metal-insulator transition. For that, we use the disordered Hubbard model in two dimensions. The theory we aply to study this model is the Statistical Dynamical Mean Field Theory, which treats the effects of disorder and electron-electron interactions in a non-trivial fashion. The basic aproximation of that theory is to describe the effects of interactions in a local way. In this theory we map the original system in several Anderson single-impurity problems, embebbed in baths that are determined through a self-consistency condition. These problems are solved in our work through the Quantum Monte Carlo method, with the Hirsch-Fye algorithm, at finite temperature. In our study, we found the coexistence of bubbles of bad metal and bad insulator in the same system, for temperatures a little higher than that which determines the critical point of the Mott transition. We could relate the local conducting properties with the local disordered energies, finding that these energies work like a site-dependent chemical potential which changes locally the doping of the system. Finally, we verified the enhancement of the critical interaction by disorder. This work is the first numerical implementation of the Statistical Dynamical Mean Field Theory with the Quantum Monte Carlo, which is the state of art for calculations of single-impurity systems. We consider the Haldane-Hubbard model with the noninteracting lower bands in a nearly flat band limit, previously determined for the spinless model, and at 1/4 filling of its corresponding noninteracting limit. Within the bosonization scheme, the Haldane-Hubbard model is mapped onto an effective interacting boson model, whose quadratic term allows us to determine the spin-wave spectrum at the harmonic approximation. We show that the excitation spectrum has two branches with a Goldstone mode and Dirac points at center and at the K and K' points of the first Brillouin zone, respectively. We also consider the effects on the spin-wave spectrum due to an energy offset in the on-site Hubbard repulsion energies and due to the presence of a staggered on-site energy term, both quantities associated with the two triangular sublattices. In both cases, we find that an energy gap opens at the K and K' points. Moreover, we also find some evidence for an instability of the flat-band ferromagnetic phase in the presence of the staggered on-site energy term. We provide some additional results for the square lattice topological Hubbard model previously studied within the bosonization formalism and comment on the differences between the bosonization scheme implementation for the correlated Chern insulators on both square and honeycomb lattices CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQ Fechado

Although well-researched as a prototype Hamiltonian for strongly interacting quantum systems, the Bose-Hubbard model has not so far been explored as a fluid system with waterlike anomalies. Water, the substance of life, is known for its myriad of anomalous properties, whose origins are still subject of intense debates. In order to provide a different insight into this problem, we show how its density anomaly can be reproduced using a quantum simulator. In particular, we demonstrate that the Bose-Hubbard model, such paradigm system in quantum mechanics, exhibits an increase in density with temperature at fixed pressure in the regular fluid regime and in the superfluid phase. We propose that the mechanism underlying the anomalies is related to zero point entropies and ground state phase transitions. A connection with the typical experimental scales and setups including confinement effects is also addressed. In this scenario, such finding opens a new pathway for theoretical and experimental studies of waterlike anomalies in the area of ultracold quantum gases. We also discuss in detail the occurrence of anomalous double peaks in their specific heat dependence on temperature. This feature, usually associated with a high geometrical frustration, can also be a consequence of a purely energetic competition. By employing self-energy functional calculations combined to finite-temperature perturbation theory, we propose a mechanism based on ground-state degeneracies expressed as residual entropies. A general decomposition of the specific heat in terms of all possible transitions between the system’s eingenvalues provides an insight on the nature of each maximum. Furthermore, we address how the model parameters modify the structure of these peaks based on its spectral properties and atom-atom correlation function. Regarding the theoretical foundations of the methods employed, we address a deep analysis of the Legendre transformation, and how it can be conceived as extremum principle. We discuss the geometrical implications in a general framework, which includes the techniques explored throughout this thesis

In conventional superconductors described by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) Theory, the transition from the normal to the superconducting state is accompanied by a reduction in the potential energy and an increase in the kinetic energy. On the other hand, in high-temperature superconductors the potential and the kinetic energies present an unconventional behavior that may be strongly related to the pseudogap phenomena. In this work, the kinetic and potential energies in the superconducting state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model were analyzed. The model is investigated using the Green’s function method within a n-pole approximation, which allows superconductivity with dx2�����y2-wave pairing. In the present scenario, a pseudogap emerges near the anti-nodal points in the Fermi surface, when the strong coupling regime is reached. The results show that in the low doping region, the system enters the strong coupling regime and the opening of a pseudogap is followed by a decrease in the kinetic energy and an increase in the potential energy. A phase diagram of Coulomb interaction U versus the occupation nT is also presented. This phase diagram shows clearly that the pseudogap regime coincides with the strong coupling regime in which the kinetic and potential energies present an unconventional behavior. The analysis of the density of states and the chemical potential showed that the unconventional behavior of the potential and kinetic energies occurs due to the pseudogap emergence in the high occupancy region. It was also observed that the pseudogap emergence, when the occupancy increases, is preceded by a change in the Fermi surface topology, which characterizes a Lifshitz transition. Both the pseudogap and the Lifshitz transition are affected by the next-nearest neighbor hopping t2 (of the Hubbard model). This result is in accordance with recent theoretical and experimental results for the Hubbard model and the cuprates. Em supercondutores convencionais descritos pela Teoria de Bardeen-Schrieffer-Cooper (BCS), a transição do estado normal para o estado supercondutor é acompanhada por uma redução na energia potencial e um aumento na energia cinética. Em contrapartida, nos supercondutores de alta temperatura, as energias potencial e cinética apresentam um comportamento não convencional que pode estar fortemente relacionado com o fenômeno do pseudogap. No presente trabalho, são analisadas as energias potencial e cinética no estado supercondutor do modelo de Hubbard de duas dimensões. O modelo é investigado usando o método das funções de Green com uma aproximação de n-polos, que permite supercondutividade com paridade de onda dx2y2 . No presente cenário, um pseudogap emerge próximo dos pontos antinodais na superfície de Fermi, quando o regime de forte correlação é atingido. Os resultados mostram que, em uma região de baixa dopagem, o sistema entra no regime de forte correlação e a abertura do pseudogap é seguida por uma diminuição na energia cinética e um aumento na energia potencial. Um diagrama de fase da interação coulombiana U versus a ocupação nT também é apresentado. Esse diagrama de fase mostra claramente que o regime de pseudogap coincide com o regime de forte correlação no qual as energias potencial e cinética apresentam um comportamento não convencional. A análise da densidade de estados e do potencial químico mostra que o comportamento não convencional das energias potencial e cinética ocorre devido à manifestação do pseudogap na região de altas ocupações. Observa-se também que o surgimento do pseudogap, quando a ocupação aumenta, é precedido de uma mudança na topologia da superfície de Fermi, a qual caracteriza uma transição de Lifshitz. Tanto o pseudogap quanto a transição de Lifshitz são afetados pelo salto para segundos vizinhos t2 (do modelo de Hubbard). Esse resultado está de acordo com resultados teóricos e experimentais recentes para o modelo de Hubbard e para os cupratos.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior ( CAPES) No presente estudo foram avaliados aspectos metodológicos e físico-químicos da adsorção das moléculas orgânicas BTEX, piridina e o fármaco paracetamol (acetominofeno) nas superfícies (101) e (001) TiO2 anatase com e sem dopantes. Primeiramente foram avaliados os efeitos das correções de Hubbard e de van der Waals, juntas e separadamente, no processo de adsorção da superfície (101) TiO2 da anatase com a molécula de benzeno. Os cálculos periódicos de ondas planas foram realizados com o funcional PBE e PAW como função básica. Os métodos utilizados para a descrição deste sistema foram GGA, GGA+U, GGA+U+vdW. A energia de adsorção da superfície (101) com a molécula de benzeno, obtida através do método GGA+U+vdW-D3 (U = 7,4 eV) foi de -64,23 kJ/mol, muito próximo a valores da literatura de -54,15 kJ/mol, enquanto que no método GGA foi de -10,09 kJ/mol. Numa segunda etapa, para aplicação do método GGA+U, o parâmetro de interação elétron-elétron de Coulomb local (U), foi determinado para os átomos que contém elétrons em orbitais do tipo d. No caso deste trabalho, os átomos de Ti e V. O descritor usado para determinação do valor de U foi o gap experimental dos bulk s V2O5 e TiO2 rutilo e anatase. O valor de U selecionado para o átomo de vanádio foi de U = 2,8 eV e para o átomo de titânio, o valor de U foi de U = 7,4 eV. A aplicação destes valores não promove alterações significativas na geometria dos bulk s utilizados no refinamento deste parâmetro. Utilizando a malha de pontos k 3x3x1 e uma energia de corte de Ec = 300 eV, a energia da superfície (101) TiO2 anatase sem dopantes apresentou o valor de 0,53 J/m2 pelo método GGA, 1,04 J/m2 para o método GGA+U+vdW-D3. Já a superfície (001) apresentou uma energia de superfície de 3,84 J/m2 pelo método GGA e 5,38 J/m2 para o método GGA+U+vdW-D3. Através da energia da supercélula, foi possível determinar a melhor posição do dopante substitucional nas três formas de dopagem avaliadas neste trabalho. A dopagem com vanádio promoveu uma diminuição da estabilidade na superfície (101), de acordo com a análise da variação da energia cíclica, enquanto que na superfície (001) promoveu um aumento na estabilidade. Foram observadas na estrutura eletrônica, as diferentes contribuições na BC e na BV, promovidas pelas dopagens de V e N avaliadas neste trabalho. A superfície (001) apresenta, uma maior energia de adsorção em relação a superfície (101), sendo caracterizada pela sua alta reatividade, enquanto a superfície (101) é caracterizada pela sua maior estabilidade. As adsorções realizadas com as moléculas tolueno, etilbenzeno, isômeros de xileno, piridina e paracetamol apresentaram as mesmas tendências de resultados observadas para a molécula de benzeno, em todos os métodos utilizados. In the present study, it was evaluated and chemical physics aspects related to adsorption of organic molecules BTEX, pyridine and the paracetamol drug (acetominophen) by TiO2 anatase surfaces (101) and (001) with and without doping. First, the effects of Hubbard and van der Waals corrections, together and separately, on the adsorption process of the anatase surface (101) TiO2 with the benzene molecule were evaluated. Periodic wave calculations were performed with the functional PBE and PAW as the basic function. The methods used to describe this system were GGA, GGA+U, GGA+U+vdW. The adsorption energy of the surface (101) with the benzene molecule obtained by the GGA+U+vdW-D3 (U = 7,4 eV) method was -64,23 kJ/mol, very close to the literature values of -54,15 kJ/mol, whereas in the GGA method it was -10,09 kJ/mol. In a second step, for application of the GGA+U method, the local Coulomb electron-electron interaction parameter (U) was determined for atoms containing electrons in d orbitals. In the case of this work, the atoms of Ti and V. The descriptor used to determine the value of U was the experimental gap of the rutile and anatase bulks V2O5 and TiO2. The U value selected for the vanadium atom was U = 2,8 eV and for the titanium atom the U value was U = 7,4 eV. The application of these values does not promote significant changes in the geometry of the bulks used in the refinement of this parameter. Using the 3x3x1 k-point mesh and a cutting energy of Ec = 300 eV, the surface energy (101) TiO2 anatase without doping was 0,53 J/m2 by the GGA method, 1,04 J/m2 for the GGA+U+vdW- D3 method. The surface (001) presented a surface energy of 3,84 J/m2 by the GGA method and 5,38 J/m2 by the GGA+U+vdW-D3 method. Through the supercell energy, it was possible to determine the best position of the substitutional doping in the three forms of doping evaluated in this work. Vanadium doping promoted a decrease in stability on surface (101), according to thermodynamic cycle analysis, while on surface (001) promoted an increase of stability. It was observed in the electronic structure, the different contributions in BC and BV, promoted by the doping of V and N evaluated in this work. The surface (001) has a higher adsorption energy in relation to the surface (101), being characterized by its high reactivity, while the surface (101) is characterized by its higher stability. The adsorption performed with toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene isomers, pyridine and paracetamol showed the same results trend observed for benzene molecule in all the methods used in this study.

Com foco em efeitos de frustração geométrica, realizamos um estudo detalhado de algumas propriedades termodinâmicas do modelo de Hubbard estendido, com interação local (U) e entre vizinhos mais próximos (V ), em clusters de três sítios. Em linhas gerais, esta investigação foi conduzida através de uma análise comparativa dos resultados de diagonalização exata para clusters nas geometrias triangular e linear. Além do cluster isolado, com número fixo de elétrons, também consideramos o caso de cluster "aberto", com número médio de ocupação controlado através do ajuste do potencial químico, com o objetivo de investigar efeitos de dopagem. A partir da diagonalização exata da matriz do hamiltoniano em uma base adequada, calculamos quantidades físicas como dupla ocupação de um sítio, calor específico, entropia e correlações de spin em função da temperatura, variando os parâmetros de interação do modelo e a densidade eletrônica. Em particular, destacamos a existência de sinalizações claras de frustração no comportamento térmico do calor específico eletrônico em clusters triangulares, o que nos permite sugerir que medidas de calor específico podem ser uma importante ferramenta experimental para detectar frustra cão geométrica em sistemas de elétrons correlacionados. With focus on geometrical-frustration e ects, we have performed a detailed study of some thermodynamic properties of the extended Hubbard model, with local (U) and nearestneighbor (V ) interactions, on three-site clusters. In general lines, this investigation was conducted through of a comparative analysis of exact-diagonalization results for clusters in triangular and linear geometries. Besides the isolated cluster, with xed electron number, we also consider the \open-cluster" case, with average occupation number controlled by adjusting the chemical potential, aiming to investigate doping e ects. Starting with the exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix in a convenient basis, we evaluate physical quantities such as double occupancy of a site, speci c heat, entropy, and spin correlations as functions of temperature, varying interaction parameters of the model and electron density. In particular, we highlight the existence of clear signatures of frustration in the thermal behavior of the electronic speci c heat in triangular clusters, which allows us to suggest that speci c-heat measurements may be an important experimental tool to detect geometrical frustration in correlated-electron systems.

Even though the Hubbard model is one of the most fundamental models of highly correlated electrons, analytical and numerical data describing its thermodynamics at nonzero magnetization are relatively scarce. We present a detailed investigation of the thermodynamic properties for the one dimensional repulsive Hubbard model in the presence of an arbitrary magnetic field for all values of the filling fraction and temperatures as low as $T \sim 0.005\, t.$ Our analysis is based on the system of integral equations derived in the quantum transfer matrix framework. We determine the critical exponents of the quantum phase transitions and also provide analytical derivations for some of the universal functions characterizing the thermodynamics in the vicinities of the quantum critical points. Extensive numerical data for the specific heat, susceptibility, compressibility, and entropy are reported. The experimentally relevant double occupancy presents an interesting doubly nonmonotonic temperature dependence at intermediate values of the interaction strength and also at large repulsion and magnetic fields close to the critical value. The susceptibility in zero magnetic field has a logarithmic singularity at low temperatures for all filling factors similar to the behavior of the same quantity in the XXX spin chain. We determine the density profiles for a harmonically trapped system and show that while the total density profile seems to depend mainly on the value of chemical potential at the center of the trap the distribution of phases in the inhomogeneous system changes dramatically as we increase the magnetic field., Comment: 26 pages, 23 figures, RevTeX 4.1

The phase diagram is generated using Gaussian disorder on the onsite potential. Comparisons with box and speckle disorder show qualitative similarities leading to the reentrant behavior of the superfluid. Quantitative differences that arise are controlled by the specific shape of the disorder. Statistics pertaining to disorder distributions are studied for a range of interaction strengths and system sizes, where strong finite-size effects are observed. Despite this, both the superfluid fraction and compressibility remain self-averaging throughout the superfluid phase. Close to the superfluid-Bose-glass phase boundary, finite-size effects dominate but still suggest that self-averaging holds. Doutoramento em Física O modelo de Hubbard é um dos modelos mais simples para descrever o movimento e a interacção de electrões em sólidos. Tem sido largamente estudado pelas suas aplicações na descrição de condutores orgânicos e na procura de supercondutividade a cada vez mais altas temperaturas. O objectivo desta tese é contribuir para a melhor compreensão do comportamento do modelo de Hubbard a duas dimensões quando a geometria da rede é alterada, nomeadamente torcendo as condições de fronteira ou introduzindo frustração geométrica. Começa-se por fazer uma extensão do diagrama de fases magnéticas do modelo de Hubbard numa rede quadrada usando a aproximação de campo médio, introduzindo a possibilidade de modulação da densidade de spin, contrastando assim com estudos anteriores. Isto foi conseguido dividindo a rede quadrada em duas sub-redes, podendo as suas densidades de spin ser diferentes. Concluiu-se que, em algumas regiões do diagrama de fases, esta densidade de spin modulada permite ao sistema baixar a sua energia livre. Em segundo lugar, introduz-se uma variação da rede quadrada, a que chamamos rede helicoidal. Estas duas redes são equivalentes no limite termodinâmico, visto que apenas diferem nas condições de fronteira. É apresentado um Hamiltoniano efectivo que descreve as correcções de energia em primeira ordem devidas aos saltos transversais no limite de acoplamento forte (strong-coupling limit). Devido à introdução destes saltos, observa-se uma dinâmica de spins, mesmo no limite de interacção electrónica infinita (ou seja, sem as correcções de Heisenberg). É apresentada uma expressão analítica para a correcção energética no caso de uma lacuna e um spin invertido, bem como representações gráficas das correcções para vários spins invertidos, obtidas numericamente. Em terceiro lugar, apresenta-se uma unificação dos estados localizados de redes quadradas decoradas. Esta unificação é apresentada na forma de "regras de origami", que incluem dobrar e desdobrar estados localizados de Hamiltonianos sem interacções (tight-binding ). Mostra-se que os estados localizados das redes decoradas de Lieb, Mielke e Tasaki podem ser obtidos uns a partir dos outros aplicando estas regras. Seguidamente, dá-se ênfase às redes decoradas da classe de Lieb. Começa-se por estudar a evolução temporal dos seus estados localizados quando um campo magnético é aplicado lentamente e perpendicularmente ao plano da rede. Conclui-se que, em concordância com o teorema adiabático, o estado localizado mantém-se localizado desde que haja uma diferença energética finita entre a sua energia e o resto do espectro do Hamiltoniano. Além disto, mostra-se que a forma como o estado localizado evolui pode ser descrita por um Hamiltoniano mais simples, com apenas três níveis energéticos, cuja solução é análoga a um movimento de precessão clássico. Finalmente, introduz-se a interacção de Hubbard na rede de Lieb e, usando a aproximação de campo médio, obtém-se o diagrama de fases magnéticas desta rede, previamente inexistente na literatura. Conclui-se que, no caso de redes bipartidas com diferente número de átomos em cada sub-rede, a abordagem de campo médio tradicional não reproduz resultados correctos na situação de um electrão por sítio (half filling ). Posto isto, segue-se uma abordagem em campo médio mais complexa (Hartree-Fock generalizada), que permite que as sub-redes tenham diferentes magnetizações e densidades de carga. Com estas modificações, a nova abordagem de campo médio já reproduz correctamente os resultados exactos em half filling, dados pelo teorema de Lieb e pelo teorema da densidade uniforme. The Hubbard model is one of the simplest models to describe the motion and interaction of electrons in solids. It has been widely studied due to its applications in the description of organic conductors and in the search for high-Tc superconductivity. The aim of this thesis is to contribute for the better understanding of the behavior of the two-dimensional Hubbard model when the geometry of the lattice is changed, namely by twisting the boundary conditions or introducing geometric frustration. We begin by extending the mean-field magnetic phase diagram of the Hubbard model in a square lattice, by adding the possibility of spin density modulation, in contrast with previous studies. This was done by considering a square lattice divided into two sublattices, which were allowed to have different spin densities. We found that, in some regions of the phase diagram, nonuniform spin density throughout the lattice leads to a lower free energy. Secondly, we introduce a variation of the square lattice, which we call the helicoidal lattice. This lattice and the square lattice are equivalent in the thermodynamic limit, as they differ only in the boundary conditions. We present an effective Hamiltonian that describes the first-order energy corrections due to transversal hoppings in the strong-coupling limit, and show that interesting spin dynamics arises, even without the Heisenberg correction, due to hole hoppings in the transversal direction. We present an analytic expression for the energy correction in the case of one hole and one inverted spin. The numerically-obtained corrections for higher number of inverted spins are also shown. Thirdly, we present a unifying picture for localized states of decorated square lattices. This unification is presented in the form of what we call the "origami rules", which include folding and unfolding localized states of tight-binding Hamiltonians. We show that localized states of decorated lattices of the Lieb, Mielke and Tasaki classes can be obtained from each other by applying these rules. We then focus on the decorated lattices of the Lieb class. We begin by studying the time evolution of its localized states when a magnetic field is slowly applied perpendicularly to the plane of the lattice. We find that, as stated by the adiabatic theorem, the localized eigenstate remains localized as long as there is an energy gap between its energy and the rest of the Hamiltonian spectrum. Furthermore, we show that the way that the localized state evolves can be described by a simple three-level toy Hamiltonian, whose solution is analogous to a classical precession motion. Lastly, we introduce the Hubbard interaction in the Lieb lattice and, using the mean-field approximation, obtain the magnetic phase diagram of this lattice, previously absent from the literature. We find that, in the case of bipartite lattices with a different number of atoms on each sublattice, the traditional mean-field approach fails to yield correct results at half-filling. Therefore, we follow a more complex (generalized Hartree-Fock) mean-field approach, which allows the sublattices to have different magnetizations and charge densities. Under these new considerations, the mean-field approach correctly reproduces the exact results at half-filling, given by Lieb’s theorem and the uniform density theorem.

The extended Bose-Hubbard model for a double-well potential with atom-pair tunneling is studied. Starting with a classical analysis we determine the existence of three different quantum phases: self-trapping, phase-locking and Josephson states. From this analysis we built the parameter space of quantum phase transitions between degenerate and non-degenerate ground states driven by the atom-pair tunneling. Considering only the repulsive case, we confirm the phase transition by the measure of the energy gap between the ground state and the first excited state. We study the structure of the solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for a small number of particles. An inspection of the roots for the ground state suggests a relationship to the physical properties of the system. By studying the energy gap we find that the profile of the roots of the Bethe ansatz equations is related to a quantum phase transition., 10 pages, 10 figures

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Critical phenomena study was for many years dominated by analysis of transitions generated by thermal fluctuations. This thermal fluctuations cease at T-0, however, quantum fluctuations does not end at zero temperature. These quantum fluctuations may, under certain conditions, trigger phase transitions. In this work the Hubbard model is used to study quantum state and quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated electron systems, considering the terms of intersite hopping and Coulomb repulsion intrasite. It was developed an algorithm based on Lanczos method to solving the Hubbard model applied in different types of lattices. Analysis of algorithms efficiency were made an was observed that the standard approaches to evaluate the properties of the ground state in the Hubbard model by Lanczos method presents convergence problems when there is a significant difference between hopping parameters and Coulomb interaction. This difference is very important since the energy convergence does not necessarily reflect in a convergence of the ground state. In this work are discussed several algorithms as standard Lanczos method, the Explicit Restarted Lanczos algorithm and the Modified Explicit Restarted Lanczos algorithm. A protocol based on these algorithms using the operator S2 as s stopping criterion was developed, since through this the operator it is possible to assess the error getting from the ground state itself. The algorithm based on the ERL provides better accuracy and it is 5 times faster compared with conventional ones. The MERL-based algorithm keeps the error at the last significant digit, and its processing time is about 2.5 times longer than the ERL-based algorithm, although it is still faster than the standard Lanczos method. These analyzes pave the way for a reliable and practical evaluation of the ground-state properties not only of the Hubbard model, but also for other manybodies quantum systems. The systems analyzed were clusters of polymeric lattice AB2 tipe, one-dimensional lattice considering nears and next nears neighbors hoppings and cluster of fcc lattice. All systems showed quantum state transitions. Through the study of the spin-spin correlations of the AB2 lattices clusters it was possible to analyze in detail the behavior of these spin-spin correlation functions between sublattices of a finite system. The analysis of one-dimensional lattice with next near neighbor made it possible to use an extrapolation method, which has determined that the quantum phase transition critical point, Uc/t = 4.7, from which the system changes from a paramagnetic behavior to a ferromagnetic behavior. In the fcc lattice clusters were examined the ground state energy as a function of the particle density showed a minimum value for all the structural sizes studied. The minimum energy decreases with increasing the interaction parameter U. It was observed that the ground state energy has a minimum at n = 0.6 for U/t = W, where W denotes the non-interacting bandwidth and the face-centered cubic structure is ferromagnetic. These results, when compared to the nickel properties, shown great similarity analysis in literature, made at finite temperature and support the results of Hirsh, which proposes that the interatomic interaction exchange is dominant to driving the system to a ferromagnetic phase. O estudo dos fenômenos críticos foi, por muitos anos, dominado pela análise das transições geradas por flutuações térmicas. As flutuações térmicas cessam em T-0, porém flutuações quânticas não acabam na temperatura zero. Essas flutuações de caráter quântico podem, sob certas condições, desencadear transições de fase. Neste trabalho o modelo de Hubbard é utilizado para o estudo de transições de estado quântico e de fase quântica em sistemas de elétrons fortemente correlacionados, considerando os termos de hopping intersítios e de repulsão coulombiana intrasítio. Foi desenvolvido um algoritmo com base no método de Lanczos para resolver o modelo de Hubbard aplicado a diferentes tipos de rede. Foram feitas análises da eficiência de algoritmos, nelas foi possível observar que as abordagens padrão para avaliar as propriedades do estado fundamental do modelo de Hubbard através do método de Lanczos apresentam problemas de convergência quando há uma significante diferença entre os parametros de hopping e de interação coulombiana. Esta diferença é muito relevante uma vez que a convergência da energia não reflete necessariamente em uma convergência do estado fundamental. Neste trabalho são discutidos vários algoritmos como o método de Lanczos padrão, o algoritmo Explicit Restarted Lanczos e o algoritmo Modified Explicit Restarted Lanczos. Foi desenvolvido um protocolo baseado nesses algoritmos que utiliza o valor de S2 como critério de parada do método, uma vez que através dessa grandeza é possível avaliar o erro na obtenção do estado fundamental. O algoritmo baseado no ERL proporciona uma melhor precisão é 5 vezes mais rápido quando comparado com o convencional. O algoritmo baseado no MERL mantém o erro no último dígito significativo e seu tempo de processamento é cerca de 2.5 vezes mais longo do que o algoritmo baseado no ERL, embora ainda seja mais rápido do que o método Lanczos padrão. Essas análises abrem caminho para uma avaliação confiável e prática das propriedades do estado fundamental, não só do modelo de Hubbard, mas também para muitos outros sistemas quânticos de muitos corpos. Os sistemas analisados foram clusters de rede polimérica tipo AB2, de rede unidimensional considerando hoppings tanto de primeiros quanto de segundos vizinhos e clusters de rede fcc. Todos os sistemas apresentaram transições de estado quântico. Através do estudo das correlações spin-spin do cluster da rede AB2 foi possível analisar detalhadamente o comportamento das referidas funções de correlação spin-spin entre sub-redes de um sistema finito. A análise da rede unidimensional com hopping entre segundos vizinhos possibilitou utilizar um método de extrapolação, o qual determinou que o ponto crítico de transição de fase quântica, Uc/t = 4.7, a partir do qual o sistema passa de um comportamento paramagnético para um comportamento ferromagnético. Nos clusters de rede fcc foram examinadas as energias do estado fundamental em função da densidade de partícula, observando-se a existência de um valor de mínimo de energia para todas os tamanhos estruturais estudados. Os mínimos de energia diminuem com o aumento do parâmetro de interação U. Foi observado que a energia do estado fundamental tem um mínimo em a densidade eletrônica igual a 0.6 para U/t=W, em que W denota a largura de banda não-interagente e a estrutura cúbica de face centrada mostrou-se ferromagnético. Esses resultados, quando comparados com as propriedades do níquel, mostam grande semelhança com análises na literatura feitas sob temperatura finita e suportam os resultados de Hirsh, o qual propõe que a interação interatômica de exchange é dominante na condução do sistema à uma fase ferromagnética.

We consider a square lattice Hubbard model at 1/4-filling whose free-electron term is the p-flux model with topologically nontrivial and nearly flat energy bands. The electron spin is introduced such that the model either explicitly breaks time-reversal symmetry (correlated flat-band Chern insulator) or is invariant under time-reversal symmetry (correlated flat-band Z(2) topological insulator). We generalize for flat-band Chern and topological insulators the bosonization formalism [R. L. Doretto, A. O. Caldeira, and S. M. Girvin, Phys. Rev. B 71, 045339 (2005)] previously developed for the two-dimensional electron gas in a uniform and perpendicular magnetic field at filling factor nu = 1. We show that, within the bosonization scheme, the topological Hubbard model is mapped to an effective interacting boson model. We consider the boson model at the harmonic approximation and show that, for the correlated Chern insulator, the spin-wave excitation spectrum is gapless while, for the correlated topological insulator, gapped. From the branching ratios of the L-edge isotropic x-ray absorption spectra, we determine that the spin-orbit coupling is remarkably independent of x for both iridium and rhodium sites. DFT + U calculations show that the doping is close to isoelectronic and introduces impurity bands of predominantly rhodium character close to the lower Hubbard band. Overlap of these two bands leads to metallic behavior. Since the low-energy states for x < 0.5 have predominantly j(eff) = 1/2 character, we suggest that the electronic properties of this material can be described by an inhomogeneous Hubbard model, where the on-site energies change due to local variations in the spin-orbit interaction strength combined with additional changes in binding energy Aberto

Trata-se de um fenomeno quantico, devido a coerencia entre os eletrons do sistema. Uma corrente desse tipo tambem esta presente em moleculas aromaticas: um loop de corrente se estabelece no anel aromatico e e o responsavel pela anisotropia da susceptibilidade magnetica dessas moleculas. Atualmente, esses aneis de corrente sao utilizados como um criterio para aromaticidade. Assim sendo, o transporte de corrente eletrica em sistemas meso e microscopicos e um assunto de grande interesse tanto para a Fisica, quanto para a Quimica. A new model for a spin 1/2 ladder system with two legs is introduced. It is demonstrated that this model is solvable via the Bethe ansatz method for arbitrary values of the rung coupling J. This is achieved by a suitable mapping from the Hubbard model with appropriate twisted boundary conditions. Elétrons em bandas estreitas de energia são fortemente afetados pela interação coulombiana como também por desordem na rede. Ambos os efeitos podem levar à localização, mas de naturezas diferentes: estado isolante de Mott, induzido por correlação, e localização de Anderson, induzida por desordem. A existência da fase de Mott ´e também significativamente dependente do preenchimento da banda. Abordagens teóricas para lidar com esse tipo de sistema são usualmente baseadas no hamiltoniano de Hubbard ou modelos relacionados, incluindo desordem como uma distribuição de energias locais. Neste trabalho, utilizando a Teoria de Campo Médio Dinâmico (DMFT), estudamos o modelo de Anderson-Falicov-Kimball e sua versão de três bandas, obtida como uma simplificação do modelo de Hubbard de três bandas associado aos planos de CuO2 dos cupratos supercondutores de alta temperatura crítica, realizando nossa análise para os casos magnético e não magnético. A densidade de estados de uma partícula é obtida por medias aritmética e geométrica sobre a desordem, já que somente a última pode detectar a localização na ausência de um gap de energia. Variando as intensidades de interação coulombiana e desordem, construímos diagramas de fases para esse modelo, onde identificamos transições metal-isolante mediadas por correlação e desordem, bem como a inter-relação entre esses efeitos. Isso é feito para vários preenchimentos de banda, já que nosso principal interesse aqui é estudar como a variação da densidade de elétrons (dopagem) afeta os diagramas de fases previamente obtidos na ausência de dopagem. Para o modelo de uma banda no caso paramagnético, as informações reveladas pela densidade de estados são confirmadas pela análise das condutividades estática e dinâmica, incluindo efeitos de temperatura. Quando consideramos a solução magnética, observamos o comportamento da temperatura de Néel e podemos apresentar um diagrama de fases mais completo. Além de uma análise bastante extensa do modelo de uma banda, fazemos um estudo inicial do modelo de três bandas, focalizando comportamentos que possam vir a ser comparados ao que se observa nos óxidos supercondutores. Electrons in narrow-band solids are strongly affected by the Coulomb interaction as well as lattice disorder. Both effects can lead to localization, but of different nature: correlation-induced Mott insulating state, and disorder-induced Anderson localization. The existence of the Mott phase is also significantly dependent on the band filling. Theoretical approaches to deal with this kind of system are usually based on the Hubbard Hamiltonian or related models, including disorder as a distribution of the on-site energies. In this work, utilizing Dynamic Mean Field Theory (DMFT), we study the Anderson- Falicov-Kimball and its three-band version, obtained as a simplification of the three-band Hubbard model associated to the CuO2 planes of high-critical-temperature cuprate superconductors, performing our analysis for the magnetic and non-magnetic cases. The one-particle density of states is obtained by both arithmetic and geometrical averages over disorder, since only the latter can detect localization in the absence of an energy gap. Varying the strengths of Coulomb interaction and disorder, we construct phase diagrams for these models, where we identify metal-insulator transitions driven by correlation and disorder, as well as the interplay between these effects. This is done for various band fillings, since our main interest here is to study how the variation of the electron density affects the phase diagrams previously obtained in the absence of doping. For the one-band model in the paramagnetic case, the picture revealed by the density of states is further checked by evaluating the static and dynamic conductivities, including temperature effects. When we consider the magnetic solution, we observe the N´eel temperature behavior, and we are able to present a more complete phase diagram. Besides a quite extensive analysis of the one-band model, we develop an initial study of the threeband model, focusing on behaviors that might be linked with what is observed on the superconducting oxides.

We introduce two dimensional fermionic band models with two orbitals per lattice site, or one spinful orbital, and which have a non-zero topological Chern number that can be changed by varying the ratio of hopping parameters. A topologically non-trivial insulator is then realized if there is one fermion per site. When interactions in the framework of the Hubbard model are introduced, the effective hopping parameters are renormalized and the system's topological number can change at a certain interaction strength, $U=\bar U$, smaller than that for the Mott transition. Two different situations may then occur: either the anomalous Hall conductivity $\sigma_{xy}$ changes abruptly at $\bar U$, as the system undergoes a transition from one topologically non-trivial insulator to another, or the transition is through an anomalous Hall metal, and $\sigma_{xy}$ changes smoothly between two different quantized values as $U$ grows. Restoring time-reversal symmetry by adding spin to spinless models, the half-filled system becomes a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator. The topological number $\nu$ then changes at a critical coupling $\bar U$ and the quantized spin Hall response changes abruptly., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The spectral-weight distribution in recent neutron scattering experiments on the parent compound La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO), which are limited in energy range to about 450\,meV, is studied in the framework of the Hubbard model on the square lattice. We find that the higher-energy weight extends to about 566\,meV and is located at and near the momentum $[\pi,\pi]$. Our results confirm that the $U/t$ value suitable to LCO is in the range $U/t\in (6,8)$. The continuum weight energy-integrated intensity vanishes or is extremely small at momentum $[\pi,0]$. This behavior of the intensity is consistent with that of spin waves, which are damped at $[\pi,0]$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior The study about magnetic properties of strongly correlated electrons has been an problem of interest in physics by the great technological importance of various materials with this characteristic. A well-known theoretical approach, known as the Hubbard model, has been used in an attempt to describe such phenomena. This model considers the interactions and electron mobility in a simplified way for describing phenomena like itinerant magnetism and the metal-insulator transition. In this study were analyzed the thermodynamic clusters properties of structures with fcc lattice symmetry containing 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 sites. An exact numerical diagonalization method was used, where the subspaces of the problem were separatly analyzed and put together on, which is a procedure that reduces the processing data time. In order to improve the diagram of quantum states also carried out a ground state analysis of the clusters, known in the literature and obtained from systems with 4, 5 and 6 sites. On this subject a new diagram was developed showing the quantum states transition using the Lanczos method, applied to clusters with 4 to 8 sites in this case. Finally, a comparison was made between the thermodynamic properties and the results found in the new quantum state diagram. The agreement between them is good. O estudo de propriedades magnéticas de elétrons fortemente correlacionados tem sido um problema de interesse da física pela grande importância tecnológica de vários materiais com essa característica. Uma famosa abordagem teórica, conhecida como modelo de Hubbard, vem sendo utilizada na tentativa de descrever esse tipo fenômeno. Esse modelo considera interações e a mobilidade eletrônica descrevendo de forma simplificada fenômenos como magnetismo itinerante e transição metal-isolante. Neste trabalho foram analisadas propriedades termodinâmicas de clusters de estruturas com simetria da rede fcc contendo 4, 5, 6, 7 e 8 sítios. Foi utilizado um método de diagonalização numérica exata, onde os subespaços do problema foram analisados separadamente e reunidos posteriormente, procedimento que reduz o tempo de processamento dos dados. Foi também realizada uma análise do estado fundamental dos clusters com o intuito de aprimorar o diagrama de estados quânticos, conhecido na literatura, obtido a partir de sistemas com 4, 5 e 6 sítios. Sobre esse assunto, foi desenvolvido um novo diagrama que indica a transição de estados quânticos a partir da utilização do método de Lanczos, neste caso, aplicado a clusters de 4 a 8 sítios. Por fim, foi feita uma análise comparativa entre as propriedades termodinâmicas e os resultados encontrados no novo diagrama de estados quânticos que mostraram boa coerência entre si.

Anomalous properties of the normal state of a strongly correlated electron system described by an attractive extended Hubbard model are investigated. The equations of motion of the Green s functions are calculated with the two-pole approximation which gives rise to quasiparticle renormalized bands. The two-pole approximation leads to a set of correlation functions. In particular, the antiferromagnetic correlation function h~Si · ~Sji plays an important role as a source of anomalies in the normal state of the model. The uniform static magnetic susceptibility as a function of occupation nT and temperature is calculated. At low temperatures, the susceptibility presents a peak for nT ≃ 0.80. The results suggest that it is the onset of short range antiferromagnetic correlations, which could be a mechanism for the pseudogap. The Fermi surface, defined by the spectral function A(ω = 0,~k), is presented for different dopings. It has been observed that above nT ≃ 0.80 the ordinary Fermi surface evolves to a hole-pocket with pseudogaps near the antinodal points (0, π) and (π, 0). Neste trabalho, investigamos certas propriedades anômalas do estado normal de sistemas de elétrons fortemente correlacionados, descrito por um modelo de Hubbard estendido, com interação atrativa. As equações de movimento das funções de Green são calculadas na aproximação de dois polos que gera às bandas de quasipartículas renormalizadas. A aproximação de dois polos dá origem a um conjunto de funções correlação. Em particular, a função correlação h~Si.~Sji, associadas ás correlações antiferromagnética, desempenha um papel importante como fonte de anomalias no estado normal do modelo. A susceptibilidade magnética é calculada como função da ocupação nT e da temperatura. Em baixas temperaturas, a susceptibilidade apresenta um pico para nT∼=0, 80 e é nessa ocupação que as correlações antiferromagnéticas assumem um papel importante responsável pelo surgimento de pseudogaps na superfície de Fermi. O cálculo do calor específico em função da temperatura mostra uma estrutura de dois picos, um associado ás flutuações de spin e localizado em baixas temperaturas e outro associado á flutuações de cargas localizado em temperaturas mais altas. Verificamos uma relação direta entre o pico, devido ás flutuações de spins e às correlações spin-spin do tipo antiferromagnéticas. A superfície de Fermi definida pela função espectral (A~k,σ(ω)) em ω = 0 é calculada para diferentes ocupações. Foi observado que a partir de nT∼=0, 80 a superfície de Fermi desenvolve pockets centrados no ponto nodal (π 2 , π 2 ) como também pseudogaps nas proximidades dos pontos antinodais (π, 0) e (0, π).

Recent research involving magnetic polymers have given very promising results. It is observed in these polymers, the ability to remain magnetized even in the absence of magnetic field which is of great importance to developing new technologies. In order to deepen the knowledge these polymers, in special, its magnetic properties, many researchers have developed theories and methods. In this paper, we use the model developed by Hubbard in 1963. It is a relatively simple model, with important approaches that do not compromise on fundamental analysis, such polymers. With the Hubbard model as a basis, we take a model for the polymer chain in the case of a chain of sub-lattices which one contains the term and the other metal would be the term ligand of the chain. The chain is described as AXBX+1, where A and B are sub-lattices and X gives the size of the chain. We developed this model observing their magnetic properties according to the interaction applied and the number of particles per site building the magnetic phase diagram for different networks AXBX+1. Recentemente as pesquisas envolvendo polímeros magnéticos têm dado resultados muito promissores. Observa-se nestes polímeros, a capacidade de manteremse magnetizados mesmo na ausência de campo magnético o que é de grande importância para desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias. A fim de aprofundar o conhecimento sobre estes polímeros, em especial, suas propriedades magnéticas, muitos pesquisadores desenvolveram teorias e métodos. Neste trabalho, utilizaremos o modelo desenvolvido por Hubbard em 1963. Trata-se de um modelo relativamente simples, com aproximações importantes que não comprometem análises fundamentais sobre estes polímeros. Com o modelo de Hubbard como base, tomamos um modelo para a cadeia polimérica tratando-se de uma cadeia com sub-redes as quais uma delas contém o termo metálico e a outra teria o termo ligante da cadeia. A cadeia é descrita como AXBX+1, onde A e B são as sub-redes e X dá a dimensão da cadeia. Desenvolvemos este modelo observando suas propriedades magnéticas de acordo com a interação aplicada e o número de partículas por sítio da rede construindo o diagrama de fases magnéticas para diversas redes AXBX+1.

Mestrado em Física The Hubbard model is one of the most simple models to describe the motion and interaction of electrons in solids. It has been widely studied due to its applications in the description of organic conductors and in the search for high Tc superconductivity. In this work, the Hubbard model in a helicoidal lattice is studied, a lattice identical to the two-dimensional square lattice in the thermodynamic limit. The magnetic phases of this model are analyzed by building mean eld phase diagrams. The thermodynamics of this model is studied in the strong coupling limit (U ! 1). We consider hoppings along and across helix steps. The hoppings across helix steps generate a mixing of the spin con gurations, whose dynamics is also studied. O modelo de Hubbard é um dos modelos mais simples para descrever o movimento e a interacção de electrões em sólidos. Tem sido largamente estudado pelas suas aplicações na descrição de condutores orgânicos e na procura de supercondutividade a cada vez mais altas temperaturas. Neste trabalho, é estudado o modelo de Hubbard numa rede helicoidal, uma rede idêntica à rede bidimensional quadrada no limite termodinâmico. As fases magnéticas deste modelo são analisadas através da construção de diagramas de fase em campo médio. A termodinâmica deste modelo é estudada no limite de acoplamento forte (U ! 1). São considerados saltos ao longo de passos da hélice e saltos de um passo para outro. Os saltos entre diferentes passos da hélice geram mistura das con gurações de spin, cuja dinâmica também é estudada.

We show that the thermal entanglement in a spin system using only magnetic-susceptibility measurements is restricted to the insulator materials. We develop a generalization of the thermal entanglement witness that allows us to get information about the system entanglement with variable local spin lengths that can be used experimentally in conductor or insulator materials. As an application, we study thermal entanglement for the half-filled Hubbard model for linear, square, and cubic clusters. We note that it is the itinerancy of electrons that favors the entanglement. Our results suggest a weak dependence between entanglement and external spin freedom degrees.

In the present work the Roth s two-pole approximation (Phys. Rev. 184, 451 (1969)) has been used to investigate the role of d− p hybridization in the normal and superconducting states of an extended d− p Hubbard model. Superconductivity with singlet dx2−y2 -wave pairing is treated by following Beenen and Edwards formalism (Phys. Rev. B 52, 13636 (1995)). In the first part of this work, the effects of the hybridization on the superconductivity, in the hole-doped regime, have been studied treating Roth s band shift within two different approximations. In the first one, the band shift has been calculated in the limit U →¥ (U is the Coulomb interaction), with zero temperature and without consider the superconducting effects. These regards, are restrict to the band shift. In the other parts of the problem, U, the temperature and the superconducting effects have been considered finites. In the second approximation, the Coulomb interaction, the temperature and the superconductivity have been considered in the calculation of some relevant correlation functions present in the Roth s band shift. The obtained results show that the hybridization acts in the sense of to suppresses the superconductivity. Also, it has been verified that the first approximation overstimates the effects of the hybridization on the superconductivity. In the second part of these work, hoppings to second-nearest-neighbors have been included in the model with the purpose of reproduces adequately the asymetries (mainly those related with the Fermi surface, band structure and phase diagram) between the hole- and electron-doped systems. Particularly, it is shown that the crossover from hole-like to electronlike Fermi surface is deeply affected by the d − p hybridization in the hole doping case. It has been verified that the effect of the hybridization is most pronounced around the saddle-points, where the superconducting gap is maximum in the particular case of dx2−y2 -wave symmetry. As a consequence, the critical temperature Tc is directly affected by the hibridization. Moreover, the obtained results suggest that in the hole doped regime, the hybridization may act on the transport properties of the system due to the sign changes of the Hall coefficient when the crossover of the Fermi surface occurs. In the electron doped case, the crossover in the Fermi surface is not verified. Nevertheless, as the hybridization suppresses the density of states near the Fermi level, the superconductivity is affected. The topology of the Fermi surface in the hole and electron doping regime agree with recent experimental ARPES results for La2−xSrxCuO4 (hole doping) and Nd2−xCexCuO4 (electron doping). Neste trabalho, foi usada a aproximação de dois-pólos proposta por L. Roth (Phys. Rev. 184, 451 (1969)), para investigar os efeitos da hibridização no estado normal e no estado supercondutor de um modelo de Hubbard d − p. Para tratar supercondutividade com simetria dx2−y2 , usou-se o procedimento de fatorização proposto por Beenen e Edwards (Phys. Rev. B 52, 13636 (1995)). Na primeira parte do trabalho, os efeitos da hibridização sobre a upercondutividade, foram investigados considerando-se duas aproximações diferentes para calcular o deslocamento de banda. O deslocamento de banda surge quando tratamos as equações de movimento das funções de Green através do método de L. Roth. Na primeira aproximação o deslocamento foi calculado para U →¥ (U ´e a interação coulombiana), temperatura igual a zero, e sem incluir os efeitos da supercondutividade. É importante destacar que essas considerações foram feitas apenas no deslocamento, as outras partes do problema foram tratadas considerando finitas, as quantidades citadas acima. Na segunda aproximação, o deslocamento de banda foi estudado incluíndo-se os efeitos de U, da temperatura e da supercondutividade. Nos dois casos observou-se que a hibridização atua no sentido de suprimir a supercondutividade. Verificou-se também que na primeira aproximação considerada no cálculo do deslocamento de banda, os efeitos da hibridização sobre a supercondutividade, são superestimados. Isso ocorre porque certas funções correlação presentes no deslocamento de banda desaparecem no limite U →¥. Na segunda parte deste trabalho, incluiu-se no modelo, um termo de salto ( hopping ) para os segundos vizinhos de um sítio i. Esse termo foi ncluído com o objetivo de reproduzir adequadamente as assimetrias entre o regime de dopagem por buracos e o regime de dopagem por elétrons. No caso particular de dopagem por buracos, observou-se que a mudança na natureza da superfície de Fermi de buraco para elétron, profundamente afetada pela hibridização. Além disso, verificou-se que o efeito da hibridização ´e mais intenso nas regiões dos pontos de sela, nas quais o gap supercondutor ´e máximo devido à simetria dx2−y2 . Com isso, a temperatura crítica de transiçãoo (Tc) do estado normal para o estado supercondutor, também é afetada pela hibridização. Os resultados sugerem também, que no caso de dopagem por buracos, a hibridização interfere no valor de dopagem em que ocorre a mudança no sinal do coeficiente Hall, portanto deve afetar também as propriedades de transportes do sistema. No caso de dopagem por elétrons, não foi verificado nenhuma mudança na natureza da superf´ıcie de Fermi. No entanto, como a hibridização aumenta a largura das bandas e dimimui a densidade de estados no nível de Fermi, neste caso a supercondutividade também é afetada. A topologia da superfície de Fermi nos regimes de dopagen por buracos e por elétrons concorda bem com resultados experimentais de ARPES obtidos recentemente para o composto La2−xSrxCuO4 (dopado por buracos) e para o composto Nd2−xCexCuO4 (dopado por elétrons).

Neste trabalho estudamos algumas propriedades supercondutoras de compostos hidratados de cobalto do tipo NaxCoO2 · yH2O. Estes compostos são formados por planos de CoO2, intercalados por planos de íons de Na e moléculas de H2O, formando uma rede triangular bidimensional pelos átomos de Co. Utilizando como modelo um hamiltoniano de Hubbard estendido, foram construídas as funções de Green normal e anômala no limite U → ¥ e na aproximação de campo médio. Nos restringimos ao caso paramagnético, e estudamos a supercondutividade do sistema considerando a possibilidade de diferentes simetrias para o parâmetro de ordem da fase supercondutora. Os resultados indicam a ocorrência de supercondutividade para determinadas regiões do número de partículas, em concordância qualitativa com os dados experimentais. In this work we study some properties of hydrated cobalt oxide, NaxCoO2 · yH2O in the superconducting phase. This compound consists of CoO2 layers interlayered by Na ions and H2O molecules, resulting in a Co triangular lattice. Our theoretical model is the extended Hubbard Model and we obtain the normal and anomalous Green’s functions in the infinite U limit by using the mean field approximation. We consider the paramagnetic case and we analyse coupling between electrons with different symmetries, so obtaining the singlet and triplet superconducting order parameters. The superconducting phases showed in this work are in qualitative agreement with experimental results.

El trabajo se basa en resultados previos publicados en el campo [27, 28, 32, 34]. La investigación se enfoca en la energía de estado base y se exploran varios regímenes del acoplamiento electrón-fonón. Los sistemas físicos considerados aquí son cadenas de iones de oxígeno y cobre. Las cadenas de menor tamaño consisten de tres sitios que aparecen como cadenas aisladas en el cerámico YBa2Cu3O7. Aquí se han explorado dos aproximaciones al estudio de sistemas bosónicos, la base fonónica óptima y el método de pseudositios. Como complemento, se ha investigado el caso simple del modelo de Hubbard unidimensional." As a complement, the simplest case of the onedimensional Hubbard model is investigated."

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Esta tese consiste no estudo de cadeias quase-unidimensionais ferrimagnéticas relacionadas a compostos inorgânicos tais como os fosfatos A3Cu3(PO4)4 (onde A=Ca, Sr e Pb), bem como ao composto orgânico PNNBNO. A modelagem teórica é realizada através dos hamiltonianos de Hubbard, t-J e Heisenberg nas cadeias AB2 e ABC, os quais são investigados em vários regimes de acoplamento e preenchimento da banda. Além disso, também consideraremos o diagrama de fases da cadeia AB2 de Heisenberg frustrada, relacionada ao composto Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2. Calculamos os estados de baixa energia através de diagonalização exata (algoritmo de Lanczos) e do grupo de renormalização da matriz de densidade. Inicialmente consideramos as cadeias AB2 e ABC de Hubbard em banda semi-cheia em função da repulsão coulombiana U. Revelamos numericamente a estrutura ferrimagnética do estado fundamental no limite de Heisenberg e para U pequeno. Em conexão com a ordem magnética, ambas as cadeias exibem três modos de onda de spin, os quais foram estudados em detalhe no limite Heisenberg. Um desses modos é antiferromagnético e necessita de uma energia finita para ser excitado. Esta excitação massiva é responsável por um platô na curva de magnetização em função do campo magnético para ambas as cadeias. Os outros modos são ferromagnéticos: um deles é o modo de Goldstone, induzido pela quebra espontânea da invariância de rotação do modelo; enquanto que o outro modo é massivo, com banda razoavelmente estreita no caso da cadeia ABC e banda sem dispersão (modo localizado) no caso da cadeia AB2. Em seguida, apresentamos um amplo estudo do modelo de Hubbard na cadeia AB2 dopada, nos regimes de fraco e forte acoplamento (modelo t-J), incluindo o limite U-infinito. Devido à topologia especial de sua célula unitária, a cadeia exibe uma grande variedade de fases quando o estado ferrimagnético (n=1) é dopado com buracos (? =1-n). Nos regimes de fraco e forte acoplamento (com U finito) para ? <1/3, observamos um cruzamento (crossover), que antecipa o comportamento líquido de Luttinger encontrado para ?>2/3. Finalmente, tratamos o efeito de frustração magnética pela inclusão de uma interação competitiva J2 no modelo de Heisenberg na cadeia AB2. Em particular, observamos que a ordem ferrimagnética é estável para J20.44 a fase canted é suprimida em favor de uma fase espiral em ambas as sub-redes

Within the Hartree Fock- RPA analysis, we derive the spin wave spectrum for the weak ferromagnetic phase of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. Assuming a uniform magnetization, the polar (optical) and acoustic branches of the spin wave excitations are determined. The bipartite lattice geometry produces a q-dependent phase difference between the spin wave amplitudes on the two sub-lattices. We also find an instability of the uniform weakly magnetized configuration to a weak antiferromagnetic spiraling spin structure, in the lattice plane, with wave vector Q along the Gamma-K direction, for electron densities n>0.6. We discuss the effect of diagonal disorder on both the creation of electron bound states, enhancement of the density of states, and the possible relevance of these effects to disorder induced ferromagnetism, as observed in proton irradiated graphite., 13 pages, 7 figures

We discuss the magnetic phases of the Hubbard model for the honeycomb lattice both in two and three spatial dimensions. A ground state phase diagram is obtained depending on the interaction strength $U$ and electronic density $n$. We find a first order phase transition between ferromagnetic regions where the spin is maximally polarized (Nagaoka ferromagnetism) and regions with smaller magnetization (weak ferromagnetism). When taking into account the possibility of spiral states, we find that the lowest critical $U$ is obtained for an ordering momentum different from zero. The evolution of the ordering momentum with doping is discussed. The magnetic excitations (spin waves) in the antiferromagnetic insulating phase are calculated from the random-phase approximation for the spin susceptibility. We also compute the spin fluctuation correction to the mean field magnetization by virtual emission/absorption of spin waves. In the large $U$ limit, the renormalized magnetization agrees qualitatively with the Holstein-Primakoff theory of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet, although the latter approach produces a larger renormalization.

Orientador: Eduardo Miranda Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Fisica Gleb Wataghin Resumo: O objetivo central do trabalho aqui apresentado é o estudo do papel da desordem em sistemas fortemente correlacionados, em que a energia de interação elétron-elétron é comparável a ou domina sobre a energia cinética dos elétrons. Com esse intuito, trabalhamos com os modelos de Hubbard e da rede de Anderson na presença de desordem. A teoria principal na qual nosso trabalho se baseia é a Teoria Dinâmica de Campo Médio, usada no tratamento da interação elétron-elétron presente nesses modelos. Por essa teoria, na ausência de desordem, o problema de uma rede é mapeado no problema de uma impureza embebida num meio que é determinado autoconsistentemente. Portanto, a solução de cada um dos modelos acima recai na solução do problema de uma impureza, que, no nosso trabalho, é obtida usando teoria de perturbação no potencial de interação elétron-elétron, num cálculo a temperatura finita. Uma extensão da Teoria Dinâmica de Campo Médio é ainda empregada para que efeitos de localização de Anderson sejam incluídos. A motivação para esse estudo vem de resultados experimentais observados em dois tipos de sistemas físicos: sistemas de elétrons bidimensionais, fracamente desordenados e diluídos, e ligas de férmions pesados. No primeiro caso, os resultados experimentais apontam para a existência de uma fase metálica, e consequente transição metal-isolante, em duas dimensões. No segundo caso, um comportamento distinto do previsto pela teoria do líquido de Fermi de Landau para as propriedades termo dinâmicas e de transporte é observado. Nossos resultados para o modelo de Hubbard desordenado, que pode ser usado para descrever a transição metal-isolante de Mott, mostram a importância de se levar em consideração a presença de efeitos de espalhamento inelástico nas teorias que buscam um melhor entendimento dos resultados experimentais. No caso do modelo da rede de Anderson, chegamos a uma dependência das propriedades de transporte com a temperatura que pode ser indentificada com as correlações de Mooij observadas em muitos sistemas de metais desordenados Abstract: The main goal of this work is to study the role of disorder in strongly correlated systems, where the electron-electron interaction is comparable to or dominates over the electron kinetic energy. Keeping this in mind, we solve the Hubbard model and the Anderson lattice model in the presence of disorder. The main theory in which our work is based is the Dynamical Mean Field Theory, which is used to describe the electron-electron interaction present in these models. According to this theory, in the absence of disorder, the lattice problem is mapped onto a single impurity problem embedded in a self-consistently calculated bath. Thus, the solution of the models referred to above is obtained by solving a single impurity problem, which is done in our work through perturbation theory in the electron-electron interaction at finite temperature. An extension of the Dynamical Mean Field Theory is used to account fi)r Anderson localization effects. The motivation for this study comes from the experimental results observed in two types of systems: weakly disordered and dilute two dimensional electron systems and heavy fermion alloys. In the former, the experimental results point to the existence of a metallic phase and also of a metal-insulator transition in two dimensions. In the latter, a behavior different from that predicted by the Landau Fermi liquid theory for the thermodynamics and transport properties is observed. Our results for the disordered Hubbard model, which can be used to describe the Mott metal-insulator transition, show the importance of taking into account inelastic scattering effects in theories trying to explain the experimental results. For the Anderson lattice model, the dependence with temperature we find for the transport properties can be identified with the Mooij correlations, which are observed in many disordered metals Doutorado Física Doutora em Ciências

The phenomenon of the crossing points in specific-heat curves C(T,U) versus T of the one-dimensional half-filled-band asymmetric Hubbard model is investigated within the method of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations with extrapolation techniques to the infinite chain. A definite region where the crossing points occur is found to exist in a certain range of system parameters R (relative magnitude of the transfer integrals) and U (local interaction). We identify an association between crossing point occurrence and gradual localization of fermions.

In order to contribute to understand well the finite-temperature properties of the Falicov-Kimball model, we study the temperature dependence of the specific heat, internal energy, entropy, and mean square fluctuation of the difference between the ion and electron numbers, and of the correlation functions of the one-dimensional half-filled-band Falicov-Kimball model. For this purpose we used the method of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations with the application of the grand canonical ensemble and of extrapolation techniques to the infinite chain. Our results show that the examined Falicov-Kimball model exhibits behavior of alternate electron-ion short-range ordering at low temperature, and gradual metal-insulator transition at high temperature, but, does not exhibit the crossing point of the specific heat curves, characteristic of the Hubbard model.

Uma superrede de líquidos de Luttinger composta por um arranjo periódico de dois líquidos de Luttinger diferentes é considerada e encontramos que suas propriedades são uma mistura das propriedades dos líquidos constituintes dependendo da proporção espacial em que estejam. O peso de Drude é dado pelo produto da velocidade efetiva de carga e o expoente de correlação efetivo de carga, como no caso homogêneo. As leis de escala entre os expoentes nas funções de correlação não são alteradas pela estrutura da superrede. As propriedades de baixa energia de uma superede de Hubbard unidimensional (arranjo periódico de duas cadeias de Hubbard com acoplamentos e/ou "hoppings" diferentes) e uma superrede de spins (arranjo periódico de duas cadeias XXZ de spin -½ com parâmetros de anisotropia diferentes) são descritas em termos de uma superrede de líquidos de Luttinger. Para as superedes de Hubbard encontramos que o estado fundamental apresenta várias fases: metálicas e isolantes, as últimas sem gap (compressíveis). As superredes de spin apresentam platôs na magnetização que dependem da proporção espacial em que estejam as cadeias. O modelo de Wolff é generalizado e estudado via bosonização. Uma análise de grupo de renormalização é feita e, até primeira ordem, três fases são encontradas: condutor de carga e isolante de spin, condutor perfeito e isolante perfeito. Em segunda ordem, linhas de pontos fixos instáveis são encontradas Abstract: In this work, we study inhomogeneous strongly correlated electron systems. A Luttinger liquid superlattice, modeled by a repeated pattern of two different Luttinger liquids was considered. We find that the effective low-energy description amalgamates features of both types of liquids in proportion to their spatial extent. The Drude peak is given by the product of the effective charge velocity and the effective exponent in the charge-charge correlation function. The scaling laws between the exponents of the correlation functions are maintained, but with effective exponents. The low-energy properties of a one-dimensional Hubbard superlattice (which consists of a periodic arrangement of two long Hubbard chains with different couplings and di.erent hoppings) and spin superlattices (consisting of a repeated pattern of two long spin -½ XXZ chains, with different anisotropy parameters) are described in terms of Luttinger liquid superlattices. One-dimensional Hubbard superlattices exhibit a very rich phase diagram with several different phases: metallic and insulating, the latter with no gap (compressible). Non-trivial plateaux, with magnetization depending of the relative sizes of the chains, were found in spin superlattices. We generalized and studied the Wolff model using bosonization. From a renormalization group calculation we found three phases (in first order of perturbation theory): charge conductor and spin insulator, perfect conductor and perfect insulator. We consider a model Hamiltonian for a dimer of length a including all the electronic one- and two-body terms consistent with a single orbital per site, a free Einstein phonon term for a frequency V, and an electronphonon coupling g0 of the Holstein type. The bare electronic interaction parameters were evaluated in terms of Wannier functions built from Gaussian atomic orbitals. An effective polaronic Hamiltonian was obtained by an unrestricted displaced-oscillator transformation, followed by evaluation of the phononic terms over a squeezedphonon variational wave function. For the cases of quarter-filled and half-filled orbitals, and over a range of dimer length values, the ground state for given g0 and Ω was identified by simultaneously and independently optimizing the orbital shape, the phonon displacement, and the squeezing effect strength. As a varies, we generally find discontinuous changes of both electronic and phononic states, accompanied by an appreciable renormalization of the effective electronic interactions across the transitions, due to the equilibrium shape of the wave functions strongly depending on the phononic regime and on the type of ground state.

We discuss the infinite dimension limit of the Hubbard model by means of a perturbative expansion of the one-particle Green’s function around the atomic limit. The diagrammatic structure is simplified in this limit, allowing a formal resummation that reproduces a previously proposed mapping to a single-site mean-field problem. The method provides a natural way of addressing this effective problem by means of a perturbative expansion in the local mean field. This gives the correct exact result for the Falicov-Kimball model, which is used as a starting point to study the Hubbard case.

Este trabajo de tesis, consta de cuatro capítulos. El primer capítulo está dedicado a proponer una técnica variacional para resolver en forma aproximada el estado fundamental del modelo de Hubbard en sistemas finitos. El segundo capítulo está dedicado a una revisión de la teoría de líquidos de Luttinger y a detallar las técnicas numéricas utilizadas para estudiar los sistemas unidimensionales. Esta teoría está constituida, por una conjunción de resultados de la teoría de campos con resultados exactos en los modelos de Tomonaga y Luttinger y del grupo de renormalización. Ha tomado la forma de una estructura conceptual bien definida hace relativamente poco tiempo y actualmente está siendo abundantemente empleada. Parte de este trabajo de tesis está basado en el marco interpretativo que provee esta teoría, y, por lo tanto, consideré importante dedicarle unas cuantas páginas de esta tesis al esclarecimiento de las hipótesis y propiedades que entran en juego en el concepto de líquido de Luttinger. El tercer capítulo está dedicado a estudiar un modelo efectivo para los cupratos superconductores, que corresponde a una generalización del modelo de Hubbard. Parte del estudio está basado en resultados numéricos y en la teoría de los líquidos de Luttinger. La otra parte está basada en resultados analíticos exactos para valores particulares de los parámetros. La solución analítica en este límite resulta particularmente esclarecedor respecto del rol de las correlaciones magnéticas en el modelo de Hubbard mismo, en particular, en los que concierne al desarrollo del carácter aislador del modelo de Hubbard. En este sentido, existían conjeturas al respecto, basados en resultados de aproximaciones variacionales y de campo medio, pero no resultados analíticos exactos, como la solución que se presenta en el capítulo 3.
