Afro-Caribbean women have relatively low partnership rates in their homelands. This study asks whether Afro-Caribbean women who migrate to five developed countries "assimilate" toward the higher partnership rates of their Native White counterparts and how that "assimilation" varies across destinations. The research draws on comparative integration context theory to develop hypotheses about cross-national differences. It uses logistic regression to test those hypotheses. In the main, Afro-Caribbean women's partnership rates are converging with Native White, but with considerable cross-national variation. Furthermore, convergence is greater for women without children at home than for women with children. Among the more surprising findings, in Canada and the US, Afro-Caribbean women with children at home exhibit "reverse assimilation"; that is, the disparity in partnership rates between later generation, younger Afro-Caribbean women and their White counterparts is greater than the analogous gap for older, earlier generation Afro-Caribbean women. Unfortunately, comparative integration context theory sheds little light on this discovery. Taken together, the findings imply that differences in family structure may hamper the upward mobility of Afro-Caribbeans, most notably in Canada and America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, US and UK census data are used to compare the propensity for matches between blacks and native born whites in England and the US. Blacks are disaggregated into three ethnic groups: Black Caribbeans, Residual Blacks and, in the US, African Americans. The first group receives the most theoretical attention. Both raw percentages and parameters that control for several covariates--such as age, education and city of residence--are examined. The results indicate that, with or without controls and irrespective of ethnicity, blacks in Britain are significantly more likely to have a native born white partner than their US counterparts. These findings accord with assimilation theory, but the article's conclusion suggests that, in both countries, the assimilation of people of African descent operates differently from the assimilation of whites. Using data drawn from the Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs) of the 1991 UK Census, this study used multivariate analysis to examine the economic position of immigrants and their children on six dependent variables. The research finds that, net measurable individual characteristics, some non-white groups outperform native whites, several non-white groups outperform the foreign-born Irish, and Pakistanis are not uniquely disadvantaged. Native birth brings occupational improvement but does little to mitigate unemployment. In addition, on several outcomes, Indian males outrank Black Caribbean males, white Black Caribbean females outrank Indian females. Drawing on 1980 Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS), this study compares the determinants of annual hours of work for whites, blacks, and mainland-born Puerto Ricans residing in the New York SMSA in 1979. Two theoretical approaches are tested; a neoclassical specification and an extended structural model. The analysis supports both approaches. Few differences in coefficients exist between white and minority men, but the hours of minority women are less sensitive to family demands than are those of white women. The implications of these and other findings are discussed.
