The exact structure of the rutile-TiO2(110)-(1 × 2) surface, which had been under debate over the past 30 years, was investigated using the newly developed technique of total-reflection high-energy positron diffraction (TRHEPD), which is a positron counterpart of reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). The rocking-curves for the 00-spot obtained from the experimental diffraction patterns were compared to the curves for various models calculated with a full-dynamical theory. It was found that the rocking-curves matched those for a surface consisting of a Ti2O3 configuration, originally suggested by Onishi and Iwasawa [H. Onishi and Y. Iwasawa, Surf. Sci., 1994, 313, L783], but with a further modification of atomic positions close to the ones proposed by Wang et al. [Q. Wang, A. R. Oganov, Q. Zhu and X. F. Zhou, Phys. Rev. Lett., 2014, 113, 266101]. This result demonstrates that TRHEPD can distinguish between the existence and absence of the oxygen atoms on the topmost surface, and between the Ti atoms residing in positions at the interstitial-vertical sites and those at interstitial-horizontal sites. The atomic coordinates and charge transfer of the K/Si(111)-2√3χ 2√3-B surface were investigated using reflection high-energy positron diffraction (RHEPD). Upon the adsoϕtion of Κ onto the Si(l 1 1)-√3 Χ √3-B surface, the posidon of the 111 Bragg reflection is shifted to a lower angle, thus suggesting that a change in the inner potential arises from the charge transfer of l.Oe- per Κ atom to the surface. From RHEPD rocking curves recorded at 113 K, we determined that the top Κ atoms and the Si adatoms are adsorbed 2.96 and 2.51 Å from the first Si layer, respectively. The Si adatoms are significantly displaced upward compared to that found for the Si(111)-√3 x √3-B surface. Furthermore, we found that the Κ atoms are adsorbed between the H and T'4 sites. These are consistent with the recent theoretical prediction that the Si adatoms are upwardly displaced and the Κ atoms form a trimer structure in the 2√3χ 2√3 unit cell at low temperature [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 187603 (2011)], although the flat model where all the Si adatoms have the same height is also acceptable in the rocking curve analyses. However, at room temperature, which is above the surface phase-transition temperature for 2√3X 2√3to √3 X √3, the Κ atoms are randomly located in the 2√3 χ 2√3 unit cell. Background: Severe obesity greatly influences the difficulty of colorectal cancer surgery and has been reported to prolong operative time, increase the rate of laparotomy, and elevate increase postoperative complications. We investigated the efficacy of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) for preoperative weight loss to ensure safe colorectal cancer surgery., Case Presentation: A 51 year-old female with a body mass index of 43.5 kg/m 2 was referred to our hospital due to a positive fecal occult blood test. She was diagnosed as having a laterally spreading tumor of the cecum by colonoscopy. Endoscopic submucosal dissection was attempted but proved difficult due to the size of the lesion and its proximity to the appendiceal orifice. We planned bariatric surgery prior to colorectal surgery, and she underwent LSG without any complications. Seven months after the LSG, she had lost 30.7 kg, and her final preoperative body mass index was 27.8 kg/m 2 . Single-incision laparoscopic ileocecal resection was then performed safely. Biostimulants are a new category of materials that improve crop productivity by maximizing their natural abilities. Out of these biostimulants, those that increase seed production are considered to be particularly important as they contribute directly to the increase in the yield of cereals and legumes. Ergothioneine (EGT) is a natural, non-protein amino acid with antioxidant effects that is used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and foods. However, EGT has not been used in agriculture. This study investigated the effect of EGT on seed productivity in Arabidopsis thaliana . Compared with an untreated control, the application of EGT increased the seed yield by 66%. However, EGT had no effect on seed yield when applied during or after bolting and did not promote the growth of vegetative organs. On the other hand, both the number of flowers and the transcript levels of FLOWERING LOCUS T ( FT ), a key gene involved in flowering, were increased significantly by the application of EGT. The results suggest that EGT improves seed productivity by increasing flower number through the physiological effects of the FT protein. Furthermore, the beneficial effect of EGT on flower number is expected to make it a potentially useful biostimulant not only in crops where seeds are harvested, but also in horticultural crops such as ornamental flowering plants, fruits, vegetables.

Human respiratory syncytial viruses (HRSVs) are divided into subgroups A and B, which are further divided based on the nucleotide sequence of the second hypervariable region (HVR) of the attachment glycoprotein (G) gene. Understanding the molecular diversity of HRSV before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic can provide insights into the effects of the pandemic on HRSV dissemination and guide vaccine development. Here, we analyzed HRSVs isolated in Fukushima Prefecture from September 2017 to December 2021. Specimens from pediatric patients were collected at two medical institutions in neighboring cities. A phylogenetic tree based on the second HVR nucleotide sequences was constructed using the Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method. HRSV-A (ON1 genotype) and HRSV-B (BA9 genotype) were detected in 183 and 108 specimens, respectively. There were differences in the number of HRSV strains within clusters prevalent at the same time between the two hospitals. The genetic characteristics of HRSVs in 2021 after the COVID-19 outbreak were similar to those in 2019. HRSVs within a cluster may circulate within a region for several years, causing an epidemic cycle. Our findings add to the existing knowledge of the molecular epidemiology of HRSV in Japan. Background: Ventral hernia repair (VHR) for obese patients is often associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications and hernia recurrences. Achieving preoperative weight loss is ideal before VHR; however, it is difficult to attain with medical treatment. Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) offers the most effective and durable treatment for obesity. Therefore, massive weight loss occurring after MBS will improve the outcome of VHR., Case Presentation: A 49-year-old man (122.9 kg, BMI 39.1 kg/m 2 ) presented to our hospital wishing to undergo laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and VHR. Physical examination revealed a tennis ball-sized lower midline defect. Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed a hernia orifice 5 cm in width and 10 cm in height. As the hernia orifice was large, mesh reinforcement was essential. We planned for him to undergo VHR after massive weight loss was achieved by MBS. VHR was performed using the enhanced-view totally extraperitoneal (eTEP) technique after weight loss of 38 kg was achieved 9 months following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. His postoperative course was uneventful, and neither recurrence nor seroma was observed at 1 year follow-up., Conclusions: eTEP repair of a ventral hernia after massive weight loss following MBS would appear to be the best combination treatment for obese patients with ventral hernias. Laparoscopic (lap) colectomies for advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) often require resection of other organs. We systematically reviewed currently available literature on lap multi-visceral resection for CRC, with regard to short- and long-term oncological outcomes, and compared them with open procedures. We performed a systematic literature search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Google Scholar and PubMed from inception to November 30, 2020. The aim of this study was to synthesize short-term and oncological outcomes associated with laparoscopic versus open surgery. Pooled proportions and risk ratios (RRs) were calculated using an inverse variance method. We included six observational cohort studies published between 2012 and 2020 (lap procedures: n = 262; open procedures: n = 273). Collectively, they indicated that postoperative complications were significantly more common after open surgeries than lap surgeries (RR: 0.53; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.39-0.72; P < 0.00001), but the two approaches did not significantly differ in positive resection margins (RR: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.38-1.50; P = 0.42), local recurrence (RR: 0.66; 95% CI: 0.28-1.62; P = 0.37), or (based on two evaluable studies) 5-year OS (RR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.46-1.04; P = 0.08) or 5-year DFS (RR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.67-1.11) for T4b disease. In conclusion, laparoscopic and open multi-visceral resections for advanced CRC have comparable oncologic outcomes.
