1. The distance to a star forming region in the Outer arm of the Galaxy

Abstract

We performed astrometric observations with the VLBA of WB89-437, an H2O maser source in the Outer spiral arm of the Galaxy. We measure an annual parallax of 0.167 +/- 0.006 mas, corresponding to a heliocentric distance of 6.0 +/- 0.2 kpc or a Galactocentric distance of 13.4 +/- 0.2 kpc. This value for the heliocentric distance is considerably smaller than the kinematic distance of 8.6 kpc. This confirms the presence of a faint Outer arm toward l = 135 degrees. We also measured the full space motion of the object and find a large peculiar motion of ~20 km/s toward the Galactic center. This peculiar motion explains the large error in the kinematic distance estimate. We also find that WB89-437 has the same rotation speed as the LSR, providing more evidence for a flat rotation curve and thus the presence of dark matter in the outer Galaxy., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, accepted, 16 pages, 4 Figures

Abstract

We present the results of the multi-frequency observations of radio outburst of the microquasar Cyg X-3 in February and March 2006 with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope, the Nobeyama Millimeter Array, and the Yamaguchi 32-m telescope. Since the prediction of a flare by RATAN-600, the source has been monitored from Jan 27 (UT) with these radio telescopes. At the eighteenth day after the quench of the activity, successive flares exceeding 1 Jy were observed successfully. The time scale of the variability in the active phase is presumably shorter in higher frequency bands. We also present the result of a follow-up VLBI observation at 8.4 GHz with the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) 2.6 days after the first rise. The VLBI image exhibits a single core with a size of <8 mas (80 AU). The observed image was almost stable, although the core showed rapid variation in flux density. Abstract

A second generation near-term space VLBI mission, VSOP-2, is being planned for a launch in 2010 or soon after. The scientific objectives are very high angular resolution imaging of astrophysically exotic regions, including the cores, jets, and accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGN), water maser emissions, micro-quasars, coronae of young stellar objects, etc. A highest angular resolution of about 40 microarcseconds is achieved in the 43 GHz band. Engineering developments are in progress for the deployable antenna, antenna pointing, high data rate transmission, cryogenic receivers, accurate orbit determination, etc., to realize this mission. Abstract

Lymphatic vascular development involves specification of lymphatic endothelial progenitors that subsequently undergo sprouting, proliferation and tissue growth to form a complex second vasculature. The Hippo pathway and effectors Yap and Taz control organ growth and regulate morphogenesis and cellular proliferation. Yap and Taz control angiogenesis but a role in lymphangiogenesis remains to be fully elucidated. Here we show that YAP displays dynamic changes in lymphatic progenitors and Yap1 is essential for lymphatic vascular development in zebrafish. Maternal and Zygotic (MZ) yap1 mutants show normal specification of lymphatic progenitors, abnormal cellular sprouting and reduced numbers of lymphatic progenitors emerging from the cardinal vein during lymphangiogenesis. Furthermore, Yap1 is indispensable for Vegfc-induced proliferation in a transgenic model of Vegfc overexpression. Paracrine Vegfc-signalling ultimately increases nuclear YAP in lymphatic progenitors to control lymphatic development. We thus identify a role for Yap in lymphangiogenesis, acting downstream of Vegfc to promote expansion of this vascular lineage.

Abstract

Background: Checking patients brought in medicine (CPBM) service in a hospital is one of the core service in the pharmacy division. At the National Cancer Center Hospital East, pharmacists performed the service in a central pharmacy, however, it has changed the working place, from the central pharmacy to hospital wards, since it was criticized that patients had long waiting time for CPBM. According to the change of working place, ward pharmacists check the medicines in a ward from February 5th 2015, compared that pharmacists checked the medicine in the central pharmacy in the past. Objective: We evaluated benefits of change locations from the central pharmacy to hospital wards to check medicines brought to hospital by inpatients. Methods: We conducted retrospective analysis of pharmacists' records of medicines brought to a hospital. We made two groups, central pharmacy group (CG) which pharmacists who worked in a dispensing room worked for the service in the central pharmacy from January 7th 2015 to February 4th 2015 and ward pharmacy group (WG) which ward pharmacists worked for the service in the ward from February 5th 2015 to March 5th 2015. Results: There were 836 cases in WG and 836 cases in CG, respectively. There is no difference in patient demographics between WG and CG. An embedding of a graph on a closed surface with suitable metric is said to be minimum-length embedding if the total sum of lengths of its edges measured by the metric is the minimum among all embeddings isotopic to it and is said to be stable with respect to minimum length if the limit of any convergent sequence of minimum-length embeddings isotopic to it is an embedding of the graph. We shall discuss these notions and shall decide which 4-regular quadrangulations and which 6-regular triangulations on the torus have minimum-length embeddings and are stable with respect to minimum length. Abstract

Phenotypic overlap of type 3 long QT syndrome (LQT3) with Brugada syndrome (BrS) is observed in some carriers of mutations in the Na channel SCN5A. While this overlap is important for patient management, the clinical features, prevalence, and mechanisms underlying such overlap have not been fully elucidated. To investigate the basis for this overlap, we genotyped a cohort of 44 LQT3 families of multiple ethnicities from 7 referral centers and found a high prevalence of the E1784K mutation in SCN5A. Of 41 E1784K carriers, 93% had LQT3, 22% had BrS, and 39% had sinus node dysfunction. Heterologously expressed E1784K channels showed a 15.0-mV negative shift in the voltage dependence of Na channel inactivation and a 7.5-fold increase in flecainide affinity for resting-state channels, properties also seen with other LQT3 mutations associated with a mixed clinical phenotype. Furthermore, these properties were absent in Na channels harboring the T1304M mutation, which is associated with LQT3 without a mixed clinical phenotype. These results suggest that a negative shift of steady-state Na channel inactivation and enhanced tonic block by class IC drugs represent common biophysical mechanisms underlying the phenotypic overlap of LQT3 and BrS and further indicate that class IC drugs should be avoided in patients with Na channels displaying these behaviors

Abstract

DOCK180 was originally identified as one of two major proteins bound to the Crk oncogene product and became an archetype of the CDM family of proteins, including Ced-5 of Caenorhabditis elegans and Mbc of Drosophila melanogaster. Further study has suggested that DOCK180 is involved in the activation of Rac by the CrkII–p130Cas complex. With the use of deletion mutants of DOCK180, we found that the C-terminal region containing a cluster of basic amino acids was required for binding to and activation of Rac. This region showed high amino-acid sequence similarity to the consensus sequence of the phosphoinositide-binding site; this led us to examine whether this basic region binds to phosphoinositides. For this purpose we used PtdIns(3,4,5)P3-APB beads, as reported previously [Shirai, Tanaka, Terada, Sawada, Shirai, Hashimoto, Nagata, Iwamatsu, Okawa, Li et al. (1998) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1402, 292–302]. By using various competitors, we demonstrated the specific binding of DOCK180 to PtdIns(3,4,5)P3. The expression of active phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI-3K) did not enhance a DOCK180-induced increase in GTP-Rac; however, the expression of PI-3K translocated DOCK180 to the plasma membrane. Thus DOCK180 contained a phosphoinositide-binding domain, as did the other guanine nucleotide exchange factors with a Dbl homology domain, and was translocated to the plasma membrane on the activation of PI-3K.
