8th International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2017, Copenhagen, Denmark, 15 May 2017 - 19 May 2017; JACoW, 1023-1026 (2017)., Future upgrades of the European XFEL (EXFEL) facility may require driving the linac at higher duty factor, possibly extending to CW mode at reduced gradients. A preliminary analysis for the accelerator modules has been presented in the EXFEL TDR, but no precise assessment has been performed so far for the present 3.9 GHz system design. By making use of data collected during the commissioning and operation phase of the EXFEL injector system, we discuss here an estimate for the limits of CW operation of the present system and a plan for its possible experimental verification with existing available cavities and the EXFEL spare module., Published by JACoW

Abstract

In order to validate the cavity package concept before the module preparation for the European XFEL Injector, one 3.9 GHz cavity, complete with magnetic shielding, power coupler and frequency tuner was tested in a specially designed single cavity cryomodule in one of the caves of the DESY Accelerator Module Test Facility (AMTF). The cavity was tested in high power pulsed operation up to the quench limit of 24 MV/m, above the vertical test qualifications and all subsystems under test (coupler, tuner, waveguide tuners, LLRF system) were qualified to design performances.

Abstract

Since 2009 a series of eight nine-cell cavities (AC151 – AC158) of TESLA shape fabricated of large grain (LG) niobium material is under preparation and test at DESY. In a first step all cavities were tested after a BCP treatment. In a second step additional electro polishing is applied to all cavities. In this paper the treatment will be discussed and a first excellent result of AC155 will be reported.

Abstract

TESLA Reports 40 pp. (2004)., A development project was carried out at DESY, aimed at reducing secondary electron emission and multipactor effects in TESLA couplers by TiN layers generation on surfaces which were not protected in this way previously. Thin TiN films on ceramic or metallic surfaces were produced by deposition from Ti vapor in low pressure ammonia. Selection of processing parameters and their effect on multipactor suppression in RF field have been studied using a multipactor test resonator at DESY. Appropriate values of deposition rate, substrate temperature, final layer tickness and chemical conversion procedure were selected. A significant reduction of multipactor time during RF tests was reached due to surface coating. Chemical analysis of TiN layers on both ceramic and metallic substrates has been performed using SIMS method. TiN coating of more than 80 waveguide and cylindrical RF windows were done for TTF2, TTF3 and TTF4 versions of TESLA couplers. Surface processing of flat waveguide windows for TTF2 resulted in significant reduction of multipactor effects and improvement of power transmission. Their good performance remained unchanged after 24-hour exposition to air. TiN coating of all vacuum-facing surfaces of a TTF2 coupler led to reduction of the indispensable RF conditioning time at a pulse length of 20 μs from typically 3 days down to 4.5 hours. The above activities are considered a preparatory step for the future large-scale anti-multipactor protective coating of TESLA couplers.

Abstract

Five accelerating modules are installed in the VUV FEL linac so far. This includes 40 high power couplers connected to the superconducting cavities, eight in every module. All of them are processed and operated up to the cavity performance limits. The coupler processing procedure is described. The performance in relation to the test results on the coupler test stands are discussed.

Abstract

The main RF power coupler is one of the key elements of the accelerating module for the superconducting linac. It provides RF power to the cavity and interconnect different temperature layers in the module. Therefore statistical and dynamical thermal losses have to be optimized. Different operating modes as well as geometries were investigated. Coupler design optimization studies are carried out for TESLA and for the XFEL case. Especially long pulse operation for the X-FEL is being investigated.

Abstract

Physical review accelerators and beams 3(9), 092001 (2000). doi:10.1103/PhysRevSTAB.3.092001, The conceptional design of the proposed linear electron-positron collider TESLA is based on 9-cell 1.3 GHz superconducting niobium cavities with an accelerating gradient of Eacc >= 25 MV/m at a quality factor Q0 > 5E+9. The design goal for the cavities of the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) linac was set to the more moderate value of Eacc >= 15 MV/m. In a first series of 27 industrially produced TTF cavities the average gradient at Q0 = 5E+9 was measured to be 20.1 +- 6.2 MV/m, excluding a few cavities suffering from serious fabrication or material defects. In the second production of 24 TTF cavities additional quality control measures were introduced, in particular an eddy-current scan to eliminate niobium sheets with foreign material inclusions and stringent prescriptions for carrying out the electron-beam welds. The average gradient of these cavities at Q0 = 5E+9 amounts to 25.0 +- 3.2 MV/m with the exception of one cavity suffering from a weld defect. Hence only a moderate improvement in production and preparation techniques will be needed to meet the ambitious TESLA goal with an adequate safety margin. In this paper we present a detailed description of the design, fabrication and preparation of the TESLA Test Facility cavities and their associated components and report on cavity performance in test cryostats and with electron beam in the TTF linac.
