The structure and decay of the most neutron-rich beryllium isotope, $^{16}$Be, has been investigated following proton knockout from a high-energy $^{17}$B beam. Two relatively narrow resonances were observed for the first time, with energies of $0.84(3)$ and $2.15(5)$ MeV above the two-neutron decay threshold and widths of $0.32(8)$ and $0.95(15)$ MeV respectively. These were assigned to be the ground ($J^{\pi}=0^+$) and first excited ($2^+$) state, with $E_x=1.31(6)$ MeV. The mass excess of $^{16}$Be was thus deduced to be $56.93(13)$ MeV, some $0.5$ MeV more bound than the only previous measurement. Both states were observed to decay by direct two-neutron emission. Calculations incorporating the evolution of the wavefunction during the decay as a genuine three-body process reproduced the principal characteristics of the neutron-neutron energy spectra for both levels, indicating that the ground state exhibits a strong spatially compact dineutron component, while the 2$^+$ level presents a far more diffuse neutron-neutron distribution.

The dineutron correlation is systematically studied in three different Borromean nuclei near the neutron dripline, 11Li, 14Be and 17B, via the (p, pn) knockout reaction measured at the RIBF facility in RIKEN. For the three nuclei, the correlation angle between the valence neutrons is found to be largest in the same range of intrinsic momenta, which can be associated to the nuclear surface. This result reinforces the prediction that the formation of the dineutron is universal in environments with low neutron density, such as the surface of neutron-rich Borromean nuclei.

CONQUEST is a DFT code which was designed from the beginning to enable extremely large-scale calculations on massively parallel platforms, implementing both exact and linear scaling solvers for the ground state. It uses local basis sets (both pseudo-atomic orbitals, PAOs, and systematically convergent B-splines) and sparse matrix storage and operations to ensure locality in all aspects of the calculation. Using exact diagonalisation approaches and a full PAO basis set, systems of up to 1,000 atoms can be modelled with relatively modest resources (200-500 cores), while use of multi-site support functions (MSSF) enable calculations of up to 10,000 atoms with similar resources. With linear scaling, the code demonstrates essentially perfect weak scaling (fixed atoms per process), and has been applied to over 1,000,000 atoms, scaling to nearly 200,000 cores; it has been run on both the K computer and Fugaku, among other computers. CONQUEST calculates the total energy, forces and stresses exactly, and allows structural optimisation of both ions and simulation cell. Molecular dynamics calculations within the NVE, NVT and NPT ensembles are possible with both exact diagonalisation and linear scaling[6]. The code interfaces with LibXC to implement LDA and GGA functionals, with metaGGA and hybrid functionals under development. In particle physics experiments, pulse shape discrimination (PSD) is a powerful tool for eliminating the major background from signals. However, the analysis methods have been a bottleneck to improving PSD performance. In this study, two machine learning methods -- multilayer perceptron and convolutional neural network -- were applied to PSD, and their PSD performance was compared with that of conventional analysis methods. Three calcium-based halide scintillators were grown using the vertical Bridgman--Stockbarger method and used for the evaluation of PSD. Compared with conventional analysis methods, the machine learning methods achieved better PSD performance for all the scintillators. For scintillators with low light output, the machine learning methods were more effective for PSD accuracy than the conventional methods in the low-energy region., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

A kinematically complete quasi-free $(p,pn)$ experiment in inverse kinematics was performed to study the structure of the Borromean nucleus $^{17}$B, which had long been considered to have neutron halo. By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for $1s_{1/2}$ and $0d_{5/2}$ orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)$\%$ was determined for $1s_{1/2}$. Our finding of such a small $1s_{1/2}$ component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in $^{17}$B. The present work gives the smallest $s$- or $p$-orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features, and implies that the dominant occupation of $s$ or $p$ orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of neutron halo., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters,8 pages, 4 figures

The formation of a dineutron in the nucleus $^{11}$Li is found to be localized to the surface region. The experiment measured the intrinsic momentum of the struck neutron in $^{11}$Li via the $(p,pn)$ knockout reaction at 246 MeV/nucleon. The correlation angle between the two neutrons is, for the first time, measured as a function of the intrinsic neutron momentum. A comparison with reaction calculations reveals the localization of the dineutron at $r\sim3.6$ fm. The results also support the density dependence of dineutron formation as deduced from Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations for nuclear matter., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. Nuclear magic numbers, which emerge from the strong nuclear force based on quantum chromodynamics, correspond to fully occupied energy shells of protons, or neutrons inside atomic nuclei. Doubly magic nuclei, with magic numbers for both protons and neutrons, are spherical and extremely rare across the nuclear landscape. While the sequence of magic numbers is well established for stable nuclei, evidence reveals modifications for nuclei with a large proton-to-neutron asymmetry. Here, we provide the first spectroscopic study of the doubly magic nucleus $^{78}$Ni, fourteen neutrons beyond the last stable nickel isotope. We provide direct evidence for its doubly magic nature, which is also predicted by ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory interactions and the quasi-particle random-phase approximation. However, our results also provide the first indication of the breakdown of the neutron magic number 50 and proton magic number 28 beyond this stronghold, caused by a competing deformed structure. State-of-the-art phenomenological shell-model calculations reproduce this shape coexistence, predicting further a rapid transition from spherical to deformed ground states with $^{78}$Ni as turning point.

We present an investigation of the structure of 13Be obtained via a kinematically complete measurement of the (p; pn) reaction in inverse kinematics at 265 MeV/nucleon. The relative energy spectrum of 13Be is compared to Transfer-to-the-Continuum calculations which use as structure inputs the overlaps of the 14Be ground-state wave function, computed in a three-body model, with the unbound states of the 13Be residual nucleus. The key role of neutron p-wave orbital in the interpretation of the low-relative-energy part of the spectrum is discussed.

We examine the possible influence of Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (ECMEs) on the Sun's shadow in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity observed by the Tibet-III air shower (AS) array. We confirm a clear solar-cycle variation of the intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow during ten years between 2000 and 2009. This solar-cycle variation is overall reproduced by our Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the Sun's shadow based on the potential field model of the solar magnetic field averaged over each solar rotation period. We find, however, that the magnitude of the observed intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow is significantly less than that predicted by MC simulations, particularly during the period around solar maximum when a significant number of ECMEs is recorded. The $\chi^2$ tests of the agreement between the observations and the MC simulations show that the difference is larger during the periods when the ECMEs occur, and the difference is reduced if the periods of ECMEs are excluded from the analysis. This suggests the first experimental evidence of the ECMEs affecting the Sun's shadow observed in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ

We analyze the Sun's shadow observed with the Tibet-III air shower array and find that the shadow's center deviates northward (southward) from the optical solar disc center in the "Away" ("Toward") IMF sector. By comparing with numerical simulations based on the solar magnetic field model, we find that the average IMF strength in the "Away" ("Toward") sector is $1.54 \pm 0.21_{\rm stat} \pm 0.20_{\rm syst}$ ($1.62 \pm 0.15_{\rm stat} \pm 0.22_{\rm syst}$) times larger than the model prediction. These demonstrate that the observed Sun's shadow is a useful tool for the quantitative evaluation of the average solar magnetic field., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The low-lying structures of the midshell $\nu g_{9/2}$ Ni isotopes $^{72}$Ni and $^{74}$Ni have been investigated at the RIBF facility in RIKEN within the EURICA collaboration. Previously unobserved low-lying states were accessed for the first time following $\beta$ decay of the mother nuclei $^{72}$Co and $^{74}$Co. As a result, we provide a complete picture in terms of the seniority scheme up to the first $(8^+)$ levels for both nuclei. The experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations in order to define to what extent the seniority quantum number is preserved in the first neutron $g_{9/2}$ shell. We find that the disappearance of the seniority isomerism in the $(8^+_1)$ states can be explained by a lowering of the seniority-four $(6^+)$ levels as predicted years ago. For $^{74}$Ni, the internal de-excitation pattern of the newly observed $(6^+_2)$ state supports a restoration of the normal seniority ordering up to spin $J=4$. This property, unexplained by the shell-model calculations, is in agreement with a dominance of the single-particle spherical regime near $^{78}$Ni.

Laser-induced magnetization precessional dynamics was investigated in epitaxial films of Mn$_3$Ge, which is a tetragonal Heusler-like nearly compensated ferrimagnet. The ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) mode was observed, the precession frequency for which exceeded 0.5 THz and originated from the large magnetic anisotropy field of approximately 200 kOe for this ferrimagnet. The effective damping constant was approximately 0.03. The corresponding effective Landau-Lifshitz constant of approximately 60 Mrad/s and is comparable to those of the similar Mn-Ga materials. The physical mechanisms for the Gilbert damping and for the laser-induced excitation of the FMR mode were also discussed in terms of the spin-orbit-induced damping and the laser-induced ultrafast modulation of the magnetic anisotropy, respectively., Comment: 3 figures

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have attracted significant interest because of their excellent spin and optical characteristics for quantum information and metrology. To take advantage of the characteristics, the precise control of the orientation of the N-V axis in the lattice is essential. Here we show that the orientation of more than 99 % of the NV centers can be aligned along the [111]-axis by CVD homoepitaxial growth on (111)-substrates. We also discuss about mechanisms of the alignment. The Mn$_3$Ga Heusler compound and related alloys are the most promising materials for the realization of spin-transfer-torque switching in magneto tunneling junctions. Improved performance can be achieved by high quality interfaces in these multilayered structured devices. In this context, the interface between Mn$_{1.63}$Ga and MgO is of particular interest because of its spin polarization properties in tunneling junctions. We performed a chemical characterization of the MgO/Mn$_{1.63}$Ga junction by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). The experiment indicated the formation of Ga-O bonds at the interface and evidenced changes in the local environment of Mn atoms in the proximity of the MgO film. In addition, we show that the insertion of a metallic Mg-layer interfacing the MgO and Mn--Ga film strongly suppresses the oxidation of gallium.

The electronic structure of a quantum spin liquid compound, EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2, has been studied with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, together with two other Pd(dmit)2 salts in the valence bond solid or antiferromagnetic state. We have resolved several bands that have negligible dispersions and fit well to the calculated energy levels of an isolated [Pd(dmit)2]2 dimer. EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2 being a Mott insulator, its lower Hubbard band is identified, and there is a small gap of ~ 50 meV between this band and the chemical potential. Moreover, the spectral features exhibit polaronic behavior with anomalously broad linewidth. Compared with existing theories, our results suggest that strong electron-boson interactions, together with smaller hopping and on-site Coulomb interaction terms have to be considered for a realistic modeling of the organic quantum spin liquid systems like the Pd(dmit)2 salt., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Linear scaling methods, or O(N) methods, have computational and memory requirements which scale linearly with the number of atoms in the system, N, in contrast to standard approaches which scale with the cube of the number of atoms. These methods, which rely on the short-ranged nature of electronic structure, will allow accurate, ab initio simulations of systems of unprecedented size. The theory behind the locality of electronic structure is described and related to physical properties of systems to be modelled, along with a survey of recent developments in real-space methods which are important for efficient use of high performance computers. The linear scaling methods proposed to date can be divided into seven different areas, and the applicability, efficiency and advantages of the methods proposed in these areas is then discussed. The applications of linear scaling methods, as well as the implementations available as computer programs, are considered. An overview of the Conquest linear scaling density functional theory (DFT) code is given, focussing particularly on the scaling behaviour on modern high- performance computing (HPC) platforms. We have developed a Josephson parametric amplifier, comprising a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator terminated by a dc SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device). An external field (the pump, $\sim 20$ GHz) modulates the flux threading the dc SQUID, and, thereby, the resonant frequency of the cavity field (the signal, $\sim 10$ GHz), which leads to parametric signal amplification. We operated the amplifier at different band centers, and observed amplification (17 dB at maximum) and deamplification depending on the relative phase between the pump and the signal. We investigate the effects of electronic correlations in the full-Heusler Co$_2$MnSi, by combining a theoretical analysis of the spin-resolved density of states with tunneling-conductance spectroscopy measurements using Co$_2$MnSi as electrode. While the success of density functional theory (DFT) has led to its use in a wide variety of fields such as physics, chemistry, materials science and biochemistry, it has long been recognised that conventional methods are very inefficient for large complex systems, because the memory requirements scale as $N^2$ and the cpu requirements as $N^3$ (where $N$ is the number of atoms). The principles necessary to develop methods with linear scaling of the cpu and memory requirements with system size ($\mathcal{O}(N)$ methods) have been established for more than ten years, but only recently have practical codes showing this scaling for DFT started to appear. We report recent progress in the development of the \textsc{Conquest} code, which performs $\mathcal{O}(N)$ DFT calculations on parallel computers, and has a demonstrated ability to handle systems of over 10,000 atoms. The code can be run at different levels of precision, ranging from empirical tight-binding, through \textit{ab initio} tight-binding, to full \textit{ab initio}, and techniques for calculating ionic forces in a consistent way at all levels of precision will be presented. Volume expansion $\Delta V / V$ associated with the spin reorientation process of Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B-type compounds has been investigated in terms of simple crystalline-electric-field (CEF) model. In this system, $\Delta V / V$ is shown to be a direct measure of second order CEF energy. Calculated anomalies in $\Delta V / V$ associated with the first-order magnetization process of Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B are presented, which well reproduced the observations., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, to appear in J. Nanocrystalline films of La-doped CaB$_6$ have been fabricated by using a rf-magnetron sputtering. Lattice expansion of up to 6% with respect to the bulk value was observed along the direction perpendicular to the film plane, which arises from the trapping of Ar gas into the film. Large ferromagnetic moment of 3 ~ 4 Bohr magneton per La has been observed in some La-doped films only when the lattice expansion rate is larger than 2.5%., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, to appear in J. Linear-scaling electronic-structure techniques, also called O(N) techniques, rely heavily on the multiplication of sparse matrices, where the sparsity arises from spatial cut-offs. In order to treat very large systems, the calculations must be run on parallel computers. We analyse the problem of parallelising the multiplication of sparse matrices with the sparsity pattern required by linear-scaling techniques. We show that the management of inter-node communications and the effective use of on-node cache are helped by organising the atoms into compact groups. We also discuss how to identify a key part of the code called the `multiplication kernel', which is repeatedly invoked to build up the matrix product, and explicit code is presented for this kernel. Numerical tests of the resulting multiplication code are reported for cases of practical interest, and it is shown that their scaling properties for systems containing up to 20,000 atoms on machines having up to 512 processors are excellent.
