2. Self-Supervised Ego-Motion Estimation Based on Multi-Layer Fusion of RGB and Inferred Depth

Abstract

In existing self-supervised depth and ego-motion estimation methods, ego-motion estimation is usually limited to only leveraging RGB information. Recently, several methods have been proposed to further improve the accuracy of self-supervised ego-motion estimation by fusing information from other modalities, e.g., depth, acceleration, and angular velocity. However, they rarely focus on how different fusion strategies affect performance. In this paper, we investigate the effect of different fusion strategies for ego-motion estimation and propose a new framework for self-supervised learning of depth and ego-motion estimation, which performs ego-motion estimation by leveraging RGB and inferred depth information in a Multi-Layer Fusion manner. As a result, we have achieved state-of-the-art performance among learning-based methods on the KITTI odometry benchmark. Detailed studies on the design choices of leveraging inferred depth information and fusion strategies have also been carried out, which clearly demonstrate the advantages of our proposed framework., Comment: Accepted to ICRA 2022. 3. Video-Based Camera Localization Using Anchor View Detection and Recursive 3D Reconstruction

Abstract

In this paper we introduce a new camera localization strategy designed for image sequences captured in challenging industrial situations such as industrial parts inspection. To deal with peculiar appearances that hurt standard 3D reconstruction pipeline, we exploit pre-knowledge of the scene by selecting key frames in the sequence (called as anchors) which are roughly connected to a certain location. Our method then seek the location of each frame in time-order, while recursively updating an augmented 3D model which can provide current camera location and surrounding 3D structure. In an experiment on a practical industrial situation, our method can localize over 99% frames in the input sequence, whereas standard localization methods fail to reconstruct a complete camera trajectory., Comment: This paper have been accepted and will be appeared in the proceedings of 17th International Conference on Machine Vision Applications (MVA2021)

Abstract

In this paper, we present a robust and efficient Structure from Motion pipeline for accurate 3D reconstruction under challenging environments by leveraging the camera pose information from a visual-inertial odometry. Specifically, we propose a geometric verification method to filter out mismatches by considering the prior geometric configuration of candidate image pairs. Furthermore, we introduce an efficient and scalable reconstruction approach that relies on batched image registration and robust bundle adjustment, both leveraging the reliable local odometry estimation. Abstract

Pipe inspection is a critical task for many industries and infrastructure of a city. The 3D information of a pipe can be used for revealing the deformation of the pipe surface and position of the camera during the inspection. In this paper, we propose a 3D pipe reconstruction system using sequential images captured by a monocular endoscopic camera. Our work extends a state-of-the-art incremental Structure-from-Motion (SfM) method to incorporate prior constraints given by the target shape into bundle adjustment (BA). Using this constraint, we can minimize the scale-drift that is the general problem in SfM. Moreover, our method can reconstruct a pipe network composed of multiple parts including straight pipes, elbows, and tees. 24. Comparison of pneumonia severity scores for COVID-19 patients with the Omicron variant.

Abstract

We demonstrated that there was a significant relationship between the severity measured using the A-DROP scoring system and the mortality rate in patients with COVID-19 community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in the ancestral strain, Alpha variant, and Delta variant. We investigated the usefulness of the A-DROP scoring system in SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant CAP and compared it with severity scores, the Pneumonia Severity Index (PSI) and CURB-65 score. We analyzed a total of 547 patients with COVID-19 CAP Omicron variant; 198 cases were the BA.1 subvariant, 127 cases were the BA.2 subvariant, and 222 cases were the BA.5 subvariant, respectively. The mortality rates in patients with COVID-19 CAP among the three Omicron subvariants were identical in each pneumonia severity group. The mortality rate in patients with the Omicron variant was 0 % in patients classified with mild disease, 0.6 % in those with moderate disease, 10.4 % in those with severe disease, and 34.8 % in those with extremely severe disease. The mortality rate in patients with COVID-19 CAP increased depending on the severity classified according to the A-DROP system in each of the Omicron subvariants (Cochran–Armitage trend test; p < 0.001). The values of the area under the curve in Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis for prediction of 30-day mortality was 0.881, 0.879, and 0.863 for A-DROP, PSI, and CURB-65, respectively. There were no significant differences in the predictive ability of each pneumonia severity score. Abstract

Real-time dynamics of charge density and lattice displacements is studied during photoinduced ionic-to-neutral phase transitions by using a one-dimensional extended Peierls-Hubbard model with alternating potentials for the one-dimensional mixed-stack charge-transfer complex, TTF-CA. The time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation and the classical equation of motion are solved for the electronic and lattice parts, respectively. We show how neutral domains grow in the ionic background. As the photoexcitation becomes intense, more neutral domains are created. Above threshold intensity, the neutral phase is finally achieved. After the photoexcitation, ionic domains with wrong polarization also appear. They quickly reduce the averaged staggered lattice displacement, compared with the averaged ionicity. As the degree of initial lattice disorder increases, more solitons appear between these ionic domains with different polarizations, which obstruct the growth of neutral domains and slow down the transition., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, submitted to J. Abstract

In the SARS‐CoV‐2 Omicron period, the pattern of pneumonia changed from primarily viral pneumonia to pneumonia mixed with bacteria in the elderly. We investigated functional outcomes at 1 year after hospital discharge in patients with primary Omicron pneumonia and pneumonia mixed with bacteria, mainly aspiration pneumonia. Functional decline rates calculated using the Barthel Index at 1 year after hospital discharge were significantly higher in the pneumonia mixed with bacteria group than the primary viral pneumonia group (42.6% vs. 20.5%, p < 0.0001). It is necessary to consider early rehabilitation and treatment in elderly patients even when the predominant strain is the Omicron variant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is an urgent need to investigate more potent antitussive treatments for chronic refractory cough, particularly atopic cough, which is a major cause of chronic refractory cough in Japan. Previous studies have shown that eosinophilic tracheobronchitis with hypersensitivity to sensory nerve C-fibers is the pathophysiology of atopic cough. Gefapixant is a first-in-class P2X3 antagonist that has recently become available for clinical use in patients with refractory coughs. A 64-year-old female non-smoker presented to our hospital with a complaint of chronic intractable cough due to atopic cough. Addition of gefapixant (90 mg/day) to her previous treatment improved her distressing cough, despite the partial efficacy of many other drugs. The findings of this case demonstrate that P2X3 inhibition is a viable therapeutic option for patients with chronic refractory cough caused by atopic cough. Abstract

Protein dynamics play an essential role in function regulation. In recent years, many experimental and theoretical studies have shown that changes in protein fluctuations in the backbone and side chains fulfill a pivotal role associated with amino acid mutations, chemical modifications, and ligand binding. The dynamic correlations between protein side chains have not been sufficiently studied, and no reliable analysis method has been available so far. Therefore, we developed a method to evaluate the dynamic correlation between protein side chains using mutual information and molecular dynamics simulations. To eliminate the structural superposition errors dealing with conventional analysis methods, and to accurately extract the intrinsic fluctuation properties of the side chains, we employed distance principal component analysis (distPCA). The motion of the side chain was then projected onto the eigenvector space obtained by distPCA, and the mutual information between the projected motions was calculated. The proposed method was then applied to a small protein "eglin c" and the mutants. The results show that even a single mutation significantly changed the dynamic correlations and also suggest that the dynamic change is deeply related to the stability. Those results indicate that our developed method could be useful for analyzing the molecular mechanism of allosteric communication in proteins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
