Abstract

Beam-focusing characteristics of negative ion beams have been experimentally investigated with a superimposition of a controlled perturbation of RF field in a filament-arc discharge negative ion source. Oscillations of a negative-ion beamlet width and axis responding to the RF perturbation were observed, which may be a cause of the larger beam divergence angle of the RF negative ion source for ITER. It is pointed out that the oscillation of the beamlet width depends on the perveance and on the RF frequency such that the oscillation is suppressed at perveance-matched conditions and at low RF frequency., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

4. The Epsilon Calculus with Equality and Herbrand Complexity

Abstract

Hilbert's epsilon calculus is an extension of elementary or predicate calculus by a term-forming operator $\varepsilon$ and initial formulas involving such terms. The fundamental results about the epsilon calculus are so-called epsilon theorems, which have been proven by means of the epsilon elimination method. It is a procedure of transforming a proof in epsilon calculus into a proof in elementary or predicate calculus through getting rid of those initial formulas. One remarkable consequence is a proof of Herbrand's theorem due to Bernays and Hilbert which comes as a corollary of extended first epsilon theorem. The contribution of this paper is the upper and lower bounds analysis of the length of Herbrand disjunctions in extended first epsilon theorem for epsilon calculus with equality. We also show that the complexity analysis for Herbrand's theorem with equality is a straightforward consequence of the one for extended first epsilon theorem without equality due to Moser and Zach.

Abstract

A split-protein system is a simple approach to introduce new termini which are useful as modification sites in protein engineering, but has been adapted mainly for monomeric proteins. Here we demonstrate the design of split subunits of the 60-mer artificial fusion-protein nanocage TIP60. The subunit fragments successfully reformed the cage structure in the same manner as prior to splitting. One of the newly introduced terminals at the interior surface can be modified using a tag peptide and green fluorescent protein. Therefore, the termini could serve as a versatile modification site for incorporating a wide variety of functional peptides and proteins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Incremental sheet forming (ISF) is an advanced flexible manufacturing process to produce complex 3D products. Unlike the conventional stamping process, ISF does not require any high cost dedicated dies. However, numerical computation for large-size ISF processes is time-consuming, and its accuracy for spring back due to unclamping tools after ISF cannot satisfy industrial demand. In this paper, an advanced numerical model considering complicated forming tool paths, trimming, and spring back was developed to efficiently simulate the multi-stage deformation phenomena of incremental sheet forming processes. Numerical modeling accuracy and efficiency are investigated considering the influence of tool path, material properties of the blank, mesh size, and boundary conditions. Through a series of case studies and comparisons with experimental results, it is observed that the numerical model with kinematics material properties and a moderate element size (5 mm) may reproduce the deformation characteristics of ISF with good accuracy and can obtain practical efficiency for a large-size ISF part. 25. User-dedicated optical path switching with optical-wireless cooperative control for low-latency and seamless handover

Abstract

We propose a user-dedicated optical path switching technique for low-latency and seamless handover in the radio access network (RAN) with the all-photonic network (APN). The APN is a network that connects end points directly with optical paths of dedicated wavelengths assigned to each user and provides large-capacity and low-latency connections. As mobile systems beyond 5th generation (5G) and 6th generation (6G) will require extremely low latency, applying the APN to the RAN is promising to achieve this. However, the RAN with the APN has a challenge in optical path switching during the handover procedure of mobile systems because optical switches that compose the APN do not have an Internet protocol (IP) layer function that enables routing control for handover in the conventional router network. Our proposed optical path switching technique to solve this challenge utilizes optical-wireless cooperative control and switches an optical path dedicated to user equipment (UE) executing handover in conjunction with its handover procedure. The key point of the proposed technique is that a next generation node B (gNB) transmits an optimal-timing optical path switching trigger to the optical switch. We experimentally demonstrated the generation of a dedicated optical path for UE in the RAN with the APN as a premise to enable the proposed optical path switching technique. To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed optical path switching technique, we experimentally compared the optical switch and router in terms of latency performance, packet loss, and packet misdirection in the path switching during handover. The results indicated successful optical path switching during handover without packet loss and packet misdirection while reducing the latency per single network equipment by 99%, from 4 µs for the router to 45 ns for the optical switch.
