Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Pylorus-preserving gastrectomy （PPG）, which had been developed in 1960s, has been reappraised for years and now accepted as a type of function-preserving compared with those of laparoscopy- ssisted distal gastrectomy （LADG）, which does not preserve the pylorus and involves resection of the suprapyloric lymph nodes. METHODS: Ninety six patients diagnosed as having gastric cancer of cT1N0 underwent either LADG （n=66） or LAPPG （n=30）. The patient demographics and the early surgical outcomes were evaluated retrospectively. The quality of lymph node dissection in LAPPG was also assessed pathologically. RESULTS: Among 96 patients preoperatively diagnosed as cT1, pT1 was 88 cases and pT2 in 8, 91.7 % of diagnostic accuracy. There were no differences in patient demographics, operative time, blood loss, the number of dissected lymph nodes, postoperative morbidity and length of hospitalization. Pathologically, the number of dissected lymph nodes at No. 3, 4, 6 were equal between the two groups. Abstract

The volume phase transition is studied in the ternary system of the nonionic poly (N-normalpropylacrylamide) gel, water, and various alcohol. The gel shows a reentrant volume phase transition in all mixed solvent systems studied here. It is found that the phase transition is multiple in the mixed solvent systems of water-1-propanol and water-2-propanol. These results are discussed by the mean field theory in which the effects of the chain stiffening due to the adsorption of the solvent molecules are taken into account. These results strongly suggest that the adsorption and/or the desorption of the solvent molecules promote the multiple phase transition of the nonionic poly (N-normalpropylacrylamide) gel. © 1995 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

Abstract: When ligaments are injured, reconstructive surgery is sometimes required to restore function. Methods of reconstructive surgery include transplantation of an artificial ligament and autotransplantation of a tendon. However, these methods have limitations related to the strength of the bone–ligament insertion and biocompatibility of the transplanted tissue after surgery. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new reconstruction methods and pursue the development of artificial ligaments. Elastin is a major component of elastic fibers and ligaments. However, the role of elastin in ligament regeneration has not been described. Here, we developed a rabbit model of a medial collateral ligament (MCL) rupture and treated animal knees with exogenous elastin [100 µg/(0.5 mL·week)] for 6 or 12 weeks. Elastin treatment increased gene expression and protein content of collagen and elastin (gene expression, 6‐fold and 42‐fold, respectively; protein content, 1.6‐fold and 1.9‐fold, respectively), and also increased the elastic modulus of MCL increased with elastin treatment (2‐fold) compared with the controls.
