1. Electrical Control for Extension of Ramsey Spin Coherence Time of Ion-Implanted Nitrogen Vacancy Centers in diamond

Abstract

The extension of the spin coherence times is a crucial issue for quantum information and quantum sensing. In solid state systems, suppressing noises with various techniques have been demonstrated. On the other hand, an electrical control for suppression is important toward individual controls of on-chip quantum information devices. Here we show the electrical control for extension of the spin coherence times of 40 nm-deep ion-implanted single nitrogen vacancy center spins in diamond by suppressing magnetic noises. We applied 120 V DC across two contacts spaced by 10 micrometers. The spin coherence times, estimated from a free-induction-decay and a Hahn-echo decay, were increased up to about 10 times (reaching 10 microseconds) and 1.4 times (reaching 150 microseconds), respectively. From the quantitative analysis, the dominant decoherence source depending on the applied static electric field was elucidated. The electrical control for extension can deliver a sensitivity enhancement to the DC sensing of temperature, pressure and electric (but not magnetic) fields, opening a new technique in solid-state quantum information devices.

Abstract

To augment the magnetoresistance (MR) ratio of n-type non-degenerate Si-based lateral spin valves (Si-LSVs), we modify the doping profile in the Si layer and introduce a larger local strain into the Si channel by changing a capping insulator. The highest MR ratio of 1.4% is achieved in the Si-LSVs through these improvements, with significant roles played by a reduction in the resistance-area product of the ferromagnetic contacts and an enhancement of the momentum relaxation time in the Si channel., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The search for efficient spin conversion in Bi has attracted great attention in spin-orbitronics. In the present work, we employ spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance to investigate spin conversion in Bi/Ni80Fe20(Py) bilayer films with continuously varying Bi thickness. In contrast with previous studies, sizable spin-transfer torque (i.e., a sizable spin-conversion effect) is observed in Bi/Py bilayer film. Considering the absence of spin conversion in Bi/yttrium-iron-garnet bilayers and the enhancement of spin conversion in Bi-doped Cu, the present results indicate the importance of material combinations to generate substantial spin-conversion effects in Bi., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures (to appear in Applied Physics Letters)

Abstract

Room temperature operation of a spin exclusive or (XOR) gate was demonstrated in lateral spin valve devices with nondegenerate silicon (Si) channels. The spin XOR gate is a fundamental part of the magnetic logic gate (MLG) that enables reconfigurable and nonvolatile NAND or OR operation in one device. The device for the spin XOR gate consists of three iron (Fe)/cobalt (Co)/magnesium oxide (MgO) electrodes, i.e., two input and one output electrodes. Spins are injected into the Si channel from the input electrodes whose spin angular momentum corresponds to the binary input 1 or 0. The spin drift effect is controlled by a lateral electric field in the Si channel to adjust the spin accumulation voltages under two different parallel configurations, corresponding to (1, 1) and (0, 0), so that they exhibit the same value. As a result, the spin accumulation voltage detected by the output electrode exhibits three different voltages, represented by an XOR gate. The one-dimensional spin drift-diffusion model clearly explains the obtained XOR behavior. Charge current detection of the spin XOR gate is also demonstrated. The detected charge current has a maximum of 0.94 nA, the highest value in spin XOR gates reported thus far. Furthermore, gate voltage modulation of the spin XOR gate is also demonstrated, which enables operation of multiple MLG devices., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In this article we demonstrate the injection locking of recently demonstrated spintronic feedback nano oscillator to microwave magnetic fields at integers as well fractional multiples of its auto oscillation frequency. Feedback oscillators have delay as a new degree of freedom which is absent for spin-transfer torque based oscillators, which gives rise to side peaks along with a main peak. We show that it is also possible to lock the oscillator on its side band peaks, which opens a new avenue to phase locked oscillators with large frequency differences. We observe that for low driving fields, side band locking improves the quality factor of the main peak, whereas for higher driving fields the main peak is suppressed. Abstract

The transfer of spin angular momentum to a nanomagnet from a spin polarized current provides an efficient means of controlling the magnetization direction in nanomagnets. A unique consequence of this spin torque is that the spontaneous oscillations of the magnetization can be induced by applying a combination of a dc bias current and a magnetic field. Here we experimentally demonstrate a different effect, which can drive a nanomagnet into spontaneous oscillations without the need of external spin torque injection. For the demonstration of this effect, we use a nano-pillar of magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) powered by a dc current and connected to a coplanar waveguide (CPW) lying above the free layer of the MTJ. Any fluctuation of the free layer magnetization is converted into oscillating voltage via the tunneling magneto-resistance effect and is fed back into the MTJ by the CPW through inductive coupling. As a result of this feedback, the magnetization of the free layer can be driven into a continual precession. The combination of MTJ and CPW behaves similar to a laser system and outputs a stable rf power with quality factor exceeding 10,000., Comment: 15 Pages, 6 Figures

Abstract

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have attracted significant interest because of their excellent spin and optical characteristics for quantum information and metrology. To take advantage of the characteristics, the precise control of the orientation of the N-V axis in the lattice is essential. Here we show that the orientation of more than 99 % of the NV centers can be aligned along the [111]-axis by CVD homoepitaxial growth on (111)-substrates. We also discuss about mechanisms of the alignment. However, it is important to recognize patterns, treatment, and clinical outcomes of unplanned surgeries for patients with bone sarcomas. This multicenter study aimed to characterize the clinical outcomes of patients with bone sarcomas who underwent unplanned surgeries.Patients and Methods: Data of 43 patients with bone sarcomas who underwent unplanned surgery between 2006 and 2017 were obtained from 23 hospitals in Japan. These included 18 cases of osteosarcoma, 9 of Ewing sarcoma, 8 of chondrosarcoma, and 6 of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. The study included 28 men and 15 women, with a mean age of 46 years. The mean follow-up duration was 59 months.Results: The main primary tumor sites were the femur (n = 19), spine (n = 6), pelvis (n = 5), tibia (n = 3), and humerus (n = 3). The primary diagnoses were benign bone tumor (n = 24), trauma (n = 7), bone metastasis (n = 5), osteomyelitis (n = 4), degeneration (n=2), and unknown (n = 1). As unplanned surgeries, curettage, with or without bone graft, was performed in 26 patients; internal fixation was performed in 7; spinal surgery in 5; arthroplasty in 4; and arthroscopy in one. Thirty-eight patients received additional standard treatments. Thirty-four of these patients underwent surgical tumor resections, including amputation (n = 10), and the remaining 4 received radiotherapy or carbon ion radiotherapy as additional standard treatments. The 5-year disease-specific survival (DSS) rates in patients with osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma were 65.5%, 58.3%, and 72.9%, respectively. Twelve (27.9%) patients developed local recurrences (LR); among the total 43 patients studied, the 5-year DSS rates were significantly worse for those who developed LR compared to those who did not (p = 0.03). The 5-year DSS rates in patients with and without LR were 44% and 73.8%, respectively.Conclusion: We recommend that patients who have undergone unplanned surgery be administered standard treatment, including the option of amputation because herein, LR was shown to be a risk factor for decreased DSS.Keywords: bone sarcoma, unplanned surgery, local recurrence, osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, chondrosarcoma

Abstract

Precise fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) for pancreatic cancer has the potential to greatly improve the outcome in this recalcitrant disease. To achieve this goal, we have used genetic reporters to color code cancer and stroma cells in a patient-derived orthotopic xenograft (PDOX) model. The telomerase-dependent green fluorescent protein (GFP)-containing adenovirus OBP-401 was used to label the cancer cells of a pancreatic cancer PDOX. The PDOX was previously grown in a red fluorescent protein (RFP) transgenic mouse that stably labeled the PDOX stroma cells bright red. The color-coded PDOX model enabled FGS to completely resect the pancreatic tumors including stroma. Dual-colored FGS significantly prevented local recurrence, which bright-light surgery or single-color FGS could not. FGS, with color-coded cancer and stroma cells has important potential for improving the outcome of recalcitrant-cancer surgery.

Abstract

The radio-frequency (RF) voltage amplification property of a tunnel magnetoresistance device driven by an RF external-magnetic-field-induced ferromagnetic resonance was studied. The proposed device consists of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) and an electrically isolated coplanar waveguide. The input RF voltage applied to the waveguide can excite the resonant dynamics in the free layer magnetization, leading to the generation of an output RF voltage under a DC bias current. The dependences of the RF voltage gain on the static external magnetic field strength and angle were systematically investigated. However, this procedure is sometimes difficult and can be dangerous for elderly patients whose abdominal fat layer is thin because of malnutrition. In such cases, alternative diagnostic methods are required. We report three elderly patients with heart failure complicated by malnutrition. In all cases, electrocardiogram showed low voltage in the limb leads and a pseudoinfarct pattern in the chest leads, and echocardiography showed left ventricular wall thickening with granular sparkling appearance. These patients were suspected of having amyloid cardiomyopathy but could not undergo myocardial biopsies because of their poor conditions. After failed attempts at biopsy of the abdominal fat pad or the other organs, subcutaneous fat tissue biopsy over the hip led to the diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy. The resultant diagnosis guided us to choose the appropriate treatment for the patients. This article illustrates that subcutaneous fat tissue biopsy of the hip could be a useful procedure for diagnosing systemic amyloidosis in elderly patients, particularly when a fat tissue biopsy of the abdomen is associated with a high risk of complications because of malnutrition. Abstract

An 11-month-old Japanese girl was diagnosed with food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) after presenting with vomiting approximately two hours after wheat intake. She showed positive results on the first wheat oral food challenge (OFC) at nine months of age, although serum wheat- and ω-5 gliadin-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) were not detected. The second wheat OFC, performed at age 13 months, induced wheezing (usually an IgE-mediated symptom) 4.5 hours after ingestion, probably owing to gastroesophageal reflux caused by repetitive vomiting. The third wheat OFC, performed at age 25 months, did not trigger reactions. Therefore, gradual low-dose wheat was reintroduced at home. The fourth wheat OFC performed at age 30 months induced no response either; thus, the patient was deemed to have developed tolerance to wheat. This case report, therefore, demonstrates that careful assessment of natural history and physician-supervised OFCs are necessary for adequate diagnosis and the successful management of reintroduction in wheat-induced FPIES.

Abstract

SRY (sex determining region Y)-box 2 (SOX2) plays a key role in the maintenance of stemness and resistance to drugs, whereas tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α is essential for maintaining cancer cell proliferation and metastasis. Accumulation of muscle segment homeobox 2 (MSX2) leads to downregulation of SOX2 expression. Here, we explored the MSX2-SOX2-TNF-α signaling axis and its function in the tumor phenotypes of osteosarcoma cells. Colony formation assay, cell counting kit (CCK)-8 assay, and Flow cytometry were used to examine cell growth, viability, and death, respectively. Wound healing and Transwell invasive assay were employed to examine cell migratory and invasive activities, respectively. Western blotting and RT-qPCR were used to determine the protein and mRNA expressions of MSX2, SOX2, TNF-α, Bax, and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2). Osteosarcoma clinical samples and cells showed lower levels of MSX2 than normal healthy control samples. Overexpression of MSX2 led to a reduced activity of SOX2 and TNF-α, whereas MSX2 depletion did not contribute to upregulated SOX2 levels. A gain-of-function experiment showed that osteosarcoma cell viability and growth were reduced, cell death was increased, and migration and invasion were inhibited in the MSX2 overexpression group compared with those in the non-transfected group. Furthermore, co-overexpression of MSX2 and SOX2 counteracted the inhibitory effects of MSX2 on the abovementioned tumor phenotypes of osteosarcoma cells. An in vivo tumor growth assay showed that MSX2 overexpression slowed the growth rate of osteosarcoma xenograft tumors. Thus, MSX2 loss plays a crucial role in the osteosarcoma phenotype by elevating SOX2 and TNF-α levels.

Abstract

The paramagnetic defects in the magnesium-oxide (MgO) thin-film grown on a silicon (Si) substrate (MgO|Si) by a molecular beam epitaxy method are reported. These thin films have been used as an MgO tunnel barrier material for the spin-injection to Si from Fe. According to the crystallinity evaluation, the MgO film possessed a (001) oriented structure. We investigated the paramagnetic defects and impurities of several MgO|Si samples by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The EPR spectra showed a strong isotropic signal with a g-value of 2.002 and six weak satellite peaks which were assigned to oxygen vacancies of highly oriented MgO(001) (F+ center) coupled with 25Mg nuclei (I=5/2). The spin area density of MgO (thickness=1.6 nm), which can be used as a tunnel barrier for spin injection, was determined to be 7×1013 cm-2. This value corresponds to 1% of O atoms replaced with vacancies. The identification of the paramagnetic centers and the quantitative estimation of their concentration in MgO films is important and may pave the way for highly efficient spin injection from Fe to Si via an MgO tunnel barrier.
