Abstract

An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7) s$^{-1}$ for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7) s$^{-1}$ for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4).

Abstract

We examined the excitations of planetesimals caused by the resonances of a giant planet in a protoplanetary gas disk. The highly excited planetesimals generate bow shocks, the mechanism of which results in chondrule formation, crystallization of silicate dust, and evaporation of icy planetesimals. The planetesimals beyond 2:1 resonance migrate owing to the gas drag and obtain the maximum eccentricity around 3:1 resonance, which is located at approximately half the planetary distance. The eccentricity depends on the parameters of the planetesimals and the Jovian planet, such as size and location, and gas density of the disk. The maximum relative velocity of a 100-km-sized planetesimal with respect to the gas disk reaches up to ~12 km/s in the case of Jupiter owing to secular resonance, which occurs because of the disk's gravity. We find that if a Jovian mass planet is located within 10 au, the planetesimals larger than 100 km gain sufficient velocity to cause the melting of chondrule precursors and crystallization of the silicate. The maximum velocity is higher for large planetesimals and eccentric planets. Planetesimals are trapped temporarily in the resonances and continue to have high speed over >1 Myr after the formation of a Jovian planet. This duration fits into the timescale of chondrule formation suggested by the isotopic data. The evaporation of icy planetesimals occurs when a Jovian planet is located within 15 au. This mechanism can be a new indicator of planet formation in exosystems if some molecules ejected from icy planetesimals are detected.

Abstract

It is proposed that planetesimals perturbed by Jovian mean-motion resonances are the source of shock waves that form chondrules. It is considered that this shock-induced chondrule formation requires the velocity of the planetesimal relative to the gas disk to be on the order of > 7 km/s at 1 AU. In previous studies on planetesimal excitation, the effects of Jovian mean-motion resonance together with the gas drag were investigated, but the velocities obtained were at most 8 km/s in the asteroid belt, which is insufficient to account for the ubiquitous existence of chondrules. In this paper, we reexamine the effect of Jovian resonances and take into account the secular resonance in the asteroid belt caused by the gravity of the gas disk. We find that the velocities relative to the gas disk of planetesimals a few hundred kilometers in size exceed 12 km/s, and that this is achieved around the 3:1 mean-motion resonance. The heating region is restricted to a relatively narrow band between 1.5 AU and 3.5 AU. Our results suggest that chondrules were produced effectively in the asteroid region after Jovian formation. We also find that many planetesimals are scattered far beyond Neptune. Recognition of skeletal and dental patterns may aid in proper diagnosis and development of appropriate interventions. The aim of this study was to analyze skeletal and dental patterns for pre-adolescent patients with a diagnosis of oligodontia.Patients and methods: This study included 19 oligodontia patients (age: 9.5±1.3, Hellman’s developmental stage IIIA∼IIIB) along with a control group that comprised of 19 participants (age: 9.9±1.6) without any skeletal disharmony or congenitally missing teeth, with an Angle class I relationship and general crowding. Average cephalometric measurements among the oligodontia group were compared to the control group. The correlation between number of congenitally missing teeth (CMT) and each measurement was investigated. Skeletal measurements for both male and female patients in the oligodontia group and the control group were also compared.Results: No significant difference between the experimental and the control group was observed with respect to skeletal angular and linear measurements, except the gonial angle. Abstract

Several lines of evidence suggest that fine silicate crystals observed in primitive meteorite and interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) nucleated in a supersaturated silicate vapor followed by crystalline growth. We investigated evaporation of $\mu$m-sized silicate particles heated by a bow shock produced by a planetesimal orbiting in the gas in the early solar nebula and condensation of crystalline silicate from the vapor thus produced. Our numerical simulation of shock-wave heating showed that these {\mu}m-sized particles evaporated almost completely when the bow shock is strong enough to cause melting of chondrule precursor dust particles. We found that the silicate vapor cools very rapidly with expansion into the ambient unshocked nebular region; the cooling rate is estimated, for instance, to be as high as 2000 K s$^{-1}$ for a vapor heated by a bow shock associated with a planetesimal of radius 1 km. The rapid cooling of the vapor leads to nonequilibrium gas-phase condensation of dust at temperatures much lower than those expected from the equilibrium condensation. It was found that the condensation temperatures are lower by a few hundred K or more than the equilibrium temperatures. This explains the results of the recent experimental studies of condensation from a silicate vapor that condensation in such large supercooling reproduces morphologies similar to those of silicate crystals found in meteorites. 30. Characteristic horizontal length and form of large-scale self-aggregation of clouds in radiative-convective equilibrium

Abstract

The organization of deep moist convection is considered to play an important role in the water and energy cycles in the tropical atmosphere. The nature of convective organization has been studied by idealized numerical simulations of clouds in radiative–convective equilibrium. However, because the behavior of simulated clouds is significantly affected by the computational domain, natural characteristics inherent in the moist convective system are not fully understood. To investigate the natural horizontal scale and horizontal form of the large-scale organization of deep moist convection, a series of numerical simulations were performed to systematically extend the horizontal domain size from about 1000 km to about 25000 km. When the domain size was larger than approximately 5000 km, domain mean variables in statistical equilibrium converged to identical values. In the wide domain simulations, the humid–cloudy area exhibited a mesh-like horizontal pattern analogous to shallow convective organizations. The horizontal length of the organization was approximately 3000–4000 km based on spectral analyses. Further, the factors responsible for determining the length scale were diagnosed based on a previous theory focused on boundary layer dynamics. The diagnosis suggests that the boundary layer buoyancy field is closely related to the length scale. Further study using a hierarchy of models is needed to bridge the self-aggregation of clouds in the idealized atmosphere and the convective organization in the real-world atmosphere., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)
