The anisotropic light-matter interactions in 2D materials have garnered significant attention for their potential to develop futuristic polarization-based optoelectronic devices, such as photodetectors and photo-actuators. In this study, we investigate the polarization-dependent interactions in ferroelectric 3R alpha-In2Se3 using Angle-Resolved Polarized Raman Spectroscopy (ARPRS) with different excitation lasers. Our experimental findings supported by complementary Density Functional Theory calculations demonstrate that the light-matter interactions depend not only on the crystallographic orientation but also on the excitation energy. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) confirms the highly anisotropic 3R crystal structure of alpha-In2Se3. This anisotropy in crystal structure facilitates significant optical anisotropy, driven by a complex interplay of electron-photon and electron-phonon interactions, which is reflected in the complex nature of the Raman tensor elements. These anisotropy interactions extend to the materials electrical response under light illumination. We present the investigations on atomic dynamics and Li+ diffusion in crystalline and amorphous Li2Si2O5 using quasielastic (QENS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies supplemented by ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD). The QENS measurements in the amorphous phase of Li2Si2O5 show a narrow temperature window (700 < T < 775 K), exhibiting significant quasielastic broadening corresponding to the fast Li+ diffusion and relaxation of SiO4 units to the crystalline phase. Our INS measurements clearly show the presence of large phonon density of states (PDOS) at low energy (low-E) in the superionic amorphous phase, which disappear in the non-superionic crystalline phase, corroborating the role of low-E modes in Li+ diffusion. The frustrated energy landscape and host flexibility (due to random orientation and vibrational motion of SiO4 polyhedral units) play an essential role in diffusing the Li+. We used AIMD simulations to identify that these low-E modes involve a large amplitude of Li vibrations coupled with SiO4 vibrations in the amorphous phase. At elevated temperatures, these vibrational dynamics accelerate the Li+ diffusion via a paddle-wheel like coupling mechanism. Above 775 K, these SiO4 vibrational dynamics drive the system into the crystalline phase by locking SiO4 and Li+ into deeper minima of the free energy landscape and disappear in the crystalline phase. We have performed quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering (QENS and INS) measurements from 300 K to 1173 K to investigate the Na-diffusion and underlying host dynamics in Na2Ti3O7. The QENS data show that the Na atoms undergo localized jumps up to 1173 K. The ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations supplement the measurements and show 1-d long-ranged diffusion along the a-axis above 1500 K. The simulations indicate that the occupancy of the interstitial site is critical for long-range diffusion. The nudged-elastic-band (NEB) calculation confirmed that the activation energy barrier is lowest for diffusion along the a-axis. In the experimental phonon spectra the peaks at 10 and 14 meV are dominated by Na dynamics that disappear on warming, suggesting low-energy phonons significantly contribute to large Na vibrational amplitude at elevated temperatures that enhances the Na hopping probability. We have also calculated the mode Gr\"uneisen parameters of the phonons and thereby calculated the volume thermal expansion coefficient, which is found to be in excellent agreement with available experimental data., Comment: 22 Pages, 10 Figures

We have performed quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments up to 1243 K and ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to investigate the Na diffusion in various phases of NaAlSiO4 (NASO), namely, low-carnegieite (L-NASO; trigonal), high-carnegieite (H-NASO; cubic) and nepheline (N-NASO; hexagonal) phases. The QENS measurements reveal Na ions localized diffusion behavior in L-NASO and N-NASO, but long-range diffusion behavior in H-NASO. The AIMD simulation supplemented the QENS measurements and showed that excess Na ions in H-NASO enhance the host network flexibility and activate the AlO4/SiO4 tetrahedra rotational modes. These framework modes enable the long-range diffusion of Na across a pathway of interstitial sites. The simulations also show Na diffusion in Na-deficient N-NASO through vacant Na sites along the hexagonal c-axis., Comment: 14 Pages, 5 Figures

We have performed ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the mechanism of the phase transition at high pressure from hexagonal graphite (HG) to hexagonal diamond (HD) or to cubic diamond (CD). The transition from HG to HD is found to occur swiftly in very small time of 0.2 ps, with large cooperative displacements of all the atoms. We observe that alternate layers of atoms in HG slide in opposite directions by (1/3, 1/6, 0) and (-1/3, -1/6, 0), respectively, which is about 0.7 {\AA} along the pm[2, 1, 0] direction, while simultaneously puckering by about pm0.25 {\AA} perpendicular to the a-b plane. The transition from HG to CD occurred with more complex cooperative displacements. In this case, six successive HG layers slide in pairs by 1/3 along [0, 1, 0], [-1, -1, 0] and [1, 0, 0], respectively along with the puckering as above. We have also performed calculations of the phonon spectrum in HG at high pressure, which reveal soft phonon modes that may facilitate the phase transition involving the sliding and puckering of the HG layers. The zero-point vibrational energy and the vibrational entropy are found to have important role in stabilizing HG up to higher pressures (>10 GPa) and temperatures than that estimated (<6 GPa) from previous enthalpy calculations., Comment: 6 Pages, 4 Figures

Structural as well as magnetization studies have been carried out on graphite samples irradiated by neutrons over 50 years in the CIRUS research reactor at Trombay. Neutron diffraction studies reveal that the defects in irradiated graphite samples are not well annealed and remain significant up to high temperatures much greater than 653 K where the Wigner energy is completely released. We infer that the remnant defects may be intralayer Frenkel defects, which do not store large energy, unlike the interlayer Frenkel defects that store the Wigner energy. Magnetization studies on the irradiated graphite show ferromagnetic behavior even at 300 K and a large additional paramagnetic contribution at 5 K. Ab-initio calculations based on the spin-polarized density-functional theory show that the magnetism in defected graphite is essentially confined on to a single 2-coordinated carbon atom that is located around a vacancy in the hexagonal layer., Comment: 5 Pages, 4 Figures, Supplementary materials

We report on investigations of phonons and lithium diffusion in LiAlO$_2$ based on inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements of the phonon density of states (DOS) in {\gamma}-LiAlO$_2$ from 473 K to 1073 K, complemented with ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We find that phonon modes related to Li vibrations broaden on warming as reflected in the measured phonon DOS and reproduced in simulations. Further, the AIMD simulations probe the nature of lithium diffusion in the perfect crystalline phase ({\gamma}-LiAlO$_2$), as well as in a structure with lithium vacancies and a related amorphous phase. Almost liquid-like super-ionic diffusion is observed in AIMD simulations of the three structures at high temperatures; with predicted onset temperatures of 1800 K, 1200 K, and 600 K in the perfect structure, vacancy structure and the amorphous phase, respectively. In the ideal structure, the Li atoms show correlated jumps; while simple and correlated jumps are both seen in the vacancy structure, and a mix of jumps and continuous diffusion occur in the amorphous structure. Further, we find that the Li-diffusion is favored in all cases by a large librational amplitude of the neighbouring AlO4 tetrahedra, and that the amorphous structure opens additional diffusion pathways due to a broad distribution of AlO4 tetrahedra orientations., Comment: 31 Pages, 14 figures

We have investigated the anisotropic thermal expansion of graphite using ab-initio calculation of lattice dynamics and anharmonicity of the phonons, which reveal that the negative thermal expansion (NTE) in the a-b plane below 600 K and very large positive thermal expansion along the c-axis up to high temperatures arise due to various phonons polarized along the c-axis. While the NTE arises from the anharmonicity of transverse phonons over a broad energy range up to 60 meV, the large positive expansion along the c-axis occurs largely due to the longitudinal optic phonon modes around 16 meV and a large linear compressibility along the c-axis. The hugely anisotropic bonding in graphite is found to be responsible for wide difference in the energy range of the transverse and longitudinal phonon modes polarized along the c-axis, which are responsible for the anomalous thermal expansion behavior. This behaviour is in contrast to other nearly isotropic hexagonal structures like water-ice, which show anomalous thermal expansion in a small temperature range arising from a narrow energy range of phonons., Comment: 20 Pages and 8 Figures

We report detailed temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering and ab-initio lattice dynamics investigation of magnetic perovskites YCrO3 and LaCrO3. The magnetic neutron scattering from the Cr ions exhibits significant changes with temperature and dominates at low momentum transfer regime. Ab-inito calculations performed including magnetic interactions show that the effect of magnetic interaction is very signicant on the low- as well as high-energy phonon modes. We have also shown that the inelastic neutron spectrum of YCrO3 mimics the magnon spectrum from a G-type antiferromagnetic system, which is consistent with previously reported magnetic structure in the compound. The ab-initio lattice dynamics calculations in both the compounds exhibit anisotropic thermal expansion behaviour in the orthorhombic structure and predict negative thermal expansion along the crystallographic a-axis at low temperatures. We identify the anharmonic phonon modes responsible for this anamolous behaviour in LaCrO3 involving low-energy La vibrations and distortions of the CrO6 octahedra., Comment: 29 Pages, 13 Figures

Graphite has been used as neutron moderator or reflector in many nuclear reactors. The irradiation of graphite in a nuclear reactor results in a complex population of defects. Heating of the irradiated graphite at high temperatures results in annihilation of the defects with release of an unusually large energy, called the Wigner energy. From various experiments on highly irradiated graphite samples from CIRUS reactor at Trombay and ab-initio simulations, we have for the first time identified various 2-, 3- and 4-coordinated topological structures in defected graphite, and provided microscopic mechanism of defect annihilation on heating and release of the Wigner energy. The annihilation process involves cascading cooperative movement of atoms in two steps involving an intermediate structure. We have investigated the dynamics of Na ions in amorphous Na2Si2O5, a potential solid electrolyte material for Na-battery. We have employed quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) technique in the amorphous Na2Si2O5 from 300 to 748 K to understand the diffusion pathways and relaxation timescales of Na atom dynamics. The microscopic analysis of the QENS data has been performed using ab-initio and classical molecular dynamics simulations (MD) to understand the Na-ion diffusion in the amorphous phase. Our experimental studies show that the traditional model, such as the Hall and Ross (H-R) model, fairly well describe the diffusion in the amorphous phase giving a mean jump length of ~3 {\AA} and residence time about 9.1 picoseconds. Our MD simulations have indicated that the diffusion of Na+ ions occurs in the amorphous phase of Na2Si2O5 while that is not observed in the crystalline orthorhombic phase even up to 1100 K. The MD simulations have revealed that in the amorphous phase, due to different orientations of silicon polyhedral units, accessible pathways are opened up for Na+ diffusions. Cyanide based framework compounds are known to show large negative thermal expansion behaviour. Here we report the phonon and anomalous lattice behavior of two metal cyanide framework compounds i.e. KMnAg3(CN)6 and KNiAu3(CN)6. We have studied the role of van der Waals dispersion and magnetic interactions on structural stability of these compounds. The behavior of these compounds under isotropic compression shows the presence of negative linear compressibility. The calculated phonon spectra, validated by inelastic neutron scattering measurements and elastic constants are used to study the negative thermal expansion behavior which is found to arise from low energy phonon modes involving the folding of A-NC-B-CN-A linkage about B atoms., Comment: 22 pages, 12 Figures

We have investigated anomalous lattice behavior of metal organic framework compound AgC8N5on application of pressure and temperature using ab-initio density functional theory calculations. The van der Waals dispersion interactions are found to play an important role in structural optimization and stabilization of this compound. Our ab-initio calculations show negative linear compressibility (NLC) along the c-axis of the unit cell. The ab-initio lattice dynamics as well as the molecular dynamics simulations show large negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the c-axis. The mechanism of NLC and NTE along the c-axis of the structure is governed by the dynamics of Ag atoms in the a-b plane. ${\beta}$- Eucryptite (LiAlSiO4) is a potential electrolyte for Li- ion battery due to its high Li- ion conductivity and very small volume thermal expansion coefficient. We have performed ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations of $\beta$- Eucryptite to study the origin of high temperature superionic phase transition in this material. The simulations are able to provide the microscopic understanding of the one -dimensional superionicity that occurs along the hexagonal c-axis and is associated with the order-disorder nature of the phase transition. The Li ionic conductivity is found to enhance due to the anisotropic negative thermal expansion along hexagonal c-axis. The introduction of defects in the crystal like, excess Li in interstitial sites, Li vacancy and O vacancy are found to significantly increase the ionic conductivity and hence might reduce the temperature of the superionic phase transition in this material., Comment: 26 Pages, 15 Figures

We present temperature dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurments, accompanied byab-initio calculations of phonon spectra and elastic properties as a function of pressure to understand anharmonicity of phonons and to study the mechanism of negative thermal expansion and negative linear compressibility behaviour of ZnAu2(CN)4. The mechanism is identified in terms of specific anharmonic modes that involve bending of the Zn(CN)4-Au- Zn(CN)4 linkage. The high-pressure phase transition at about 2 GPa is also investigated and found to be related to softening of a phonon mode at the L-point at the Brillouin zone boundary and its coupling with a zone-centre phonon and an M-point phonon in the ambient pressure phase. Although the phase transition is primarily driven by a L-point soft phonon mode, which usually leads to a second order transition with a 2 x 2 x 2 supercell, in the present case the structure is close to an elastic instability that leads to a weakly first order transition., Comment: 26 Pages, 12 Figures

We present the structural and dynamical studies of layered vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5). The temperature dependent X-ray diffraction measurements reveal highly anisotropic and anomalous thermal expansion from 12 K to 853 K. The results do not show any evidence of structural phase transition or decomposition of {\alpha}-V2O5, contrary to the previous transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) experiments. The inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed up to 673 K corroborate the result of our X-ray diffraction measurements. The analysis of the experimental data is carried out using ab-initio lattice dynamics calculation. The important role of van der-Waals dispersion and Hubbard interactions on the structure and dynamics is revealed through the ab-initio calculations. The calculated anisotropic thermal expansion behavior agrees well with temperature dependent X- ray diffraction. The mechanism of anisotropic thermal expansion and anisotropic linear compressibility is discussed in terms of calculated anisotropy in Gr\"uneisen parameters and elastic coefficients. The calculated Gibbs free energy in various phases of V2O5 is used to understand the high pressure and temperature phase diagram of the compound. Softening of elastic constant (C66) with pressure suggests a possibility of shear mechanism for {\alpha} to \b{eta} phase transformation under pressure., Comment: 36 pages, 13 Figures

Beta eucryptite (LiAlSiO4) shows one-dimensional super-ionic conductivity as well as anisotropic thermal expansion behavior. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements in beta eucryptite over 300 to 900 K and calculated the phonon spectrum using ab initio density functional theory method. The calculated energy profile for cooperative lithium ion displacements indicates preferential movement of Li ion along the hexagonal c-axis in the high temperature phase. However, the energy barrier for Li ion diffusion is significantly reduced when a Schottky defect is introduced in the crystal. Further, the anisotropic stress dependence of the phonon spectrum is calculated to obtain the thermal expansion behavior along various axes. The calculations show that the Gruneisen parameters of the low-energy phonon modes around 10 meV have large negative values and govern the negative thermal expansion behavior both along the a and c axes. On the other hand, anisotropic elasticity along with anisotropic positive values of the Gruneisen parameters of the high-energy modes in the range 30 to 70 meV are responsible for positive thermal expansion in the a-b plane and negative expansion along the c-axis. The analysis of the polarization vectors of the phonon modes sheds light on the mechanism of the anomalous thermal expansion behavior. We extend the study to discuss the relationship of the soft phonons in the Brillouin zone with the observed high-pressure and high-temperature phase transitions as reported in the literature., Comment: 31 pages, 15 Figures

We have determined the lattice dynamics of MgSiO$_3$ perovskite (bridgmanite) by a combination of single-crystal inelastic x-ray scattering and ab initio calculations. We observe a remarkable agreement between experiment and theory, and provide accurate results for phonon dispersion relations, phonon density of states and the full elasticity tensor. The present work constitutes an important milestone to extend this kind of combined studies to extreme conditions of pressure and temperature, directly relevant for the physics and the chemistry of Earth's lower mantle.

We have carried out temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurements of YMnO3 over the temperature range 50 - 1303 K, covering both the antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition (70 K), as well as the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition (1258 K). Measurements are accompanied by first principles calculations of phonon spectra for the sake of interpretation and analysis of the measured phonon spectra in the room temperature ferroelectric (P63cm) and high temperature paraelectric (P63/mmc) hexagonal phases of YMnO3. The comparison of the experimental and first-principles calculated phonon spectra highlight unambiguously a spin-phonon coupling character in YMnO3. This is further supported by the pronounced differences in the magnetic and non-magnetic phonon calculations. The calculated atomistic partial phonon contributions of the Y and Mn atoms are not affected by inclusion of magnetic interactions, whereas the dynamical contribution of the O atoms is found tochange. This highlights the role of the super-exchange interactions between the magnetic Mn cations, mediated by O bridges. Phonon dispersion relations have also been calculated, in the entire Brillouin zone, for both the hexagonal phases. In the high-temperature phase, unstable phonon mode at the K point is highlighted. The displacement pattern at the K-point indicates that the freezing of this mode along with the stable mode at the {\Gamma}-point may lead to a stabilization of the low-temperature (P63cm) phase, and inducing ferroelectricity. Further, we have also estimated the mode Gr\"uneisen parameter and volume thermal expansion behavior. The latter is found to agree with the available experimental data., Comment: 23 pages, 8 Figures

Well defined peaks with energies of about 18 meV have been observed in a variety of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals as well as on powders of iron-based superconductors and their parent compounds using either the triple-axis or the time-of-flight technique. They can easily be mistaken for signatures of real excitations. We have found that they are due to multiple scattering events involving primarily walls of the sample environment. Hence, they are particularly troublesome in experiments using very small samples as have been used with recently developed high intensity neutron spectrometers. It will be discussed what needs to be done to reduce the unwanted scattering to a minimum.

To shed light on the role of magnetism on the superconducting mechanism of the oxygen-free FeAs pnictides, we investigate the effect of magnetic ordering on phonon dynamics in the low-temperature orthorhombic parent compounds, which present a spin-density wave. The study covers both the 122 (AFe2As2; A=Ca, Sr, Ba) and 1111 (AFeAsF; A=Ca, Sr) phases. We extend our recent work on the Ca (122 and 1111) and Ba (122) cases by treating computationally and experimentally the 122 and 1111 Sr compounds. The effect of magnetic ordering is investigated through detailed non-magnetic and magnetic lattice dynamical calculations. The comparison of the experimental and calculated phonon spectra shows that the magnetic interactions/ordering have to be included in order to reproduce well the measured density of states. This highlights a spin-correlated phonon behavior which is more pronounced than the apparently weak electron-phonon coupling estimated in these materials. Furthermore, there is no noticeable difference between phonon spectra of the 122 Ba and Sr, whereas there are substantial differences when comparing these to CaFe2As2 originating from different aspects of structure and bonding.
