Abstract

We report measurements of the absolute branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X)$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X)$, and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{\pm} X)$, where the latter is measured for the first time. The results are based on a 121.4\,fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $\Upsilon(10860)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We reconstruct one $B_s^0$ meson in $e^+e^- \to \Upsilon(10860) \to B_s^{*} \bar{B}_s^{*}$ events and measure yields of $D_s^+$, $D^0$, and $D^+$ mesons in the rest of the event. We obtain $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X) = (68.6 \pm 7.2 \pm 4.0)\%$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X) = (21.5 \pm 6.1 \pm 1.8)\%$, and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{\pm} X) = (12.6 \pm 4.6 \pm 1.3)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Averaging with previous Belle measurements gives $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X) = (63.4 \pm 4.5 \pm 2.2)\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X) = (23.9 \pm 4.1 \pm 1.8)\%$. For the $B_s^0$ production fraction at the $\Upsilon(10860)$, we find $f_s = (21.4^{+1.5}_{-1.7})\%$., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, submitted to JHEP

Abstract

We initiate the study of multipacking problems for geometric point sets with respect to their Euclidean distances. We consider a set of $n$ points $P$ and define $N_s[v]$ as the subset of $P$ that includes the $s$ nearest points of $v \in P$ and the point $v$ itself. We assume that the \emph{$s$-th neighbor} of each point is unique, for every $s \in \{0, 1, 2, \dots , n-1\}$. For a natural number $r \leq n$, an $r$-multipacking is a set $ M \subseteq P $ such that for each point $ v \in P $ and for every integer $ 1\leq s \leq r $, $|N_s[v]\cap M|\leq (s+1)/2$. The $r$-multipacking number of $ P $ is the maximum cardinality of an $r$-multipacking of $ P $ and is denoted by $ \MP_{r}(P) $. For $r=n-1$, an $r$-multipacking is called a multipacking and $r$-multipacking number is called as multipacking number. We study the problem of computing a maximum $r$-multipacking for point sets in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We show that a maximum $1$-multipacking can be computed in polynomial time but computing a maximum $2$-multipacking is NP complete. Further, we provide approximation and parameterized solutions to the $2$-multipacking problem.

Abstract

Curriculum learning has been a quiet yet crucial component of many of the high-profile successes of reinforcement learning. Despite this, none of the major reinforcement learning libraries directly support curriculum learning or include curriculum learning implementations. These methods can improve the capabilities and robustness of RL agents, but often require significant, complex changes to agent training code. We introduce Syllabus, a library for training RL agents with curriculum learning, as a solution to this problem. Syllabus provides a universal API for curriculum learning algorithms, implementations of popular curriculum learning methods, and infrastructure for easily integrating them with distributed training code written in nearly any RL library. Syllabus provides a minimal API for each of the core components of curriculum learning, dramatically simplifying the process of designing new algorithms and applying existing algorithms to new environments. We demonstrate that the same Syllabus code can be used to train agents written in multiple different RL libraries on numerous domains. In doing so, we present the first examples of curriculum learning in NetHack and Neural MMO, two of the premier challenges for single-agent and multi-agent RL respectively, achieving strong results compared to state of the art baselines., Comment: Preprint

Abstract

Multivariate Long Sequence Time-series Forecasting (LSTF) has been a critical task across various real-world applications. Recent advancements focus on the application of transformer architectures attributable to their ability to capture temporal patterns effectively over extended periods. However, these approaches often overlook the inherent relationships and interactions between the input variables that could be drawn from their characteristic properties. In this paper, we aim to bridge this gap by integrating information-rich Knowledge Graph Embeddings (KGE) with state-of-the-art transformer-based architectures. We introduce a novel approach that encapsulates conceptual relationships among variables within a well-defined knowledge graph, forming dynamic and learnable KGEs for seamless integration into the transformer architecture. We investigate the influence of this integration into seminal architectures such as PatchTST, Autoformer, Informer, and Vanilla Transformer. Furthermore, we thoroughly investigate the performance of these knowledge-enhanced architectures along with their original implementations for long forecasting horizons and demonstrate significant improvement in the benchmark results. This enhancement empowers transformer-based architectures to address the inherent structural relation between variables. Our knowledge-enhanced approach improves the accuracy of multivariate LSTF by capturing complex temporal and relational dynamics across multiple domains. Abstract

We present measurements of $B \to K{}^{*}(892)\gamma$ decays using $365\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data collected from 2019 to 2022 by the Belle~II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The data sample contains $(387 \pm 6) \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ events. We measure branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) and $C\!P$ asymmetries ($\mathcal{A}_{C\!P}$) for both $B^{0}\to K{}^{*0}\gamma$ and $B^{+}\to K{}^{*+}\gamma$ decays. The difference in $C\!P$ asymmetries ($\Delta \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}$) and the isospin asymmetry ($\Delta_{0+}$) between these neutral and charged channels are also measured. We obtain the following branching fractions and $C\!P$ asymmetries: $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \to K{}^{*0}\gamma) = (4.14 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.11 ) \times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B} (B^{+} \to K{}^{*+}\gamma) = (4.02 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.13 )\times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} (B^{0} \to K{}^{*0}\gamma) = (-3.3 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.4 )\%$, and $\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} (B^{+} \to K{}^{*+}\gamma) = (-0.7 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.6 )\%$. The measured difference in $C\!P$ asymmetries is $\Delta \mathcal{A}_{C\!P} = (+2.6 \pm 3.8 \pm 0.7 )\%$, and the measured isospin asymmetry is $\Delta_{0+} = (+5.0 \pm 2.0 \pm 1.5 )\%$. The first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with world-average values and theory predictions.

6. Sustainable Hardware Specialization

Abstract

Hardware specialization is commonly viewed as a way to scale performance in the dark silicon era with modern-day SoCs featuring multiple tens of dedicated accelerators. By only powering on hardware circuitry when needed, accelerators fundamentally trade off chip area for power efficiency. Dark silicon however comes with a severe downside, namely its environmental footprint. While hardware specialization typically reduces the operational footprint through high energy efficiency, the embodied footprint incurred by integrating additional accelerators on chip leads to a net overall increase in environmental footprint, which has led prior work to conclude that dark silicon is not a sustainable design paradigm. We explore sustainable hardware specialization through reconfigurable logic that has the potential to drastically reduce the environmental footprint compared to a sea of accelerators by amortizing its embodied footprint across multiple applications. We present an abstract analytical model that evaluates the sustainability implications of replacing dedicated accelerators with a reconfigurable accelerator. We derive hardware synthesis results on ASIC and CGRA (a representative reconfigurable fabric) for chip area and energy numbers for a wide variety of kernels. We input these results to the analytical model and conclude that reconfigurable fabric is more sustainable. We find that as few as a handful to a dozen accelerators can be replaced by a CGRA. Moreover, replacing a sea of accelerators with a CGRA leads to a drastically reduced environmental footprint (by a factor of $2.5 \times$ to $7.6 \times$).

Abstract

Computing ground-state properties of molecules is a promising application for quantum computers operating in concert with classical high-performance computing resources. Quantum embedding methods are a family of algorithms particularly suited to these computational platforms: they combine high-level calculations on active regions of a molecule with low-level calculations on the surrounding environment, thereby avoiding expensive high-level full-molecule calculations and allowing to distribute computational cost across multiple and heterogeneous computing units. Here, we present the first density matrix embedding theory (DMET) simulations performed in combination with the sample-based quantum diagonalization (SQD) method. We employ the DMET-SQD formalism to compute the ground-state energy of a ring of 18 hydrogen atoms, and the relative energies of the chair, half-chair, twist-boat, and boat conformers of cyclohexane. The full-molecule 41- and 89-qubit simulations are decomposed into 27- and 32-qubit active-region simulations, that we carry out on the ibm_cleveland device, obtaining results in agreement with reference classical methods. Our DMET-SQD calculations mark a tangible progress in the size of active regions that can be accurately tackled by near-term quantum computers, and are an early demonstration of the potential for quantum-centric simulations to accurately treat the electronic structure of large molecules, with the ultimate goal of tackling systems such as peptides and proteins.

8. Coverage Analysis for Digital Cousin Selection -- Improving Multi-Environment Q-Learning

Abstract

Q-learning is widely employed for optimizing various large-dimensional networks with unknown system dynamics. Recent advancements include multi-environment mixed Q-learning (MEMQ) algorithms, which utilize multiple independent Q-learning algorithms across multiple, structurally related but distinct environments and outperform several state-of-the-art Q-learning algorithms in terms of accuracy, complexity, and robustness. We herein conduct a comprehensive probabilistic coverage analysis to ensure optimal data coverage conditions for MEMQ algorithms. First, we derive upper and lower bounds on the expectation and variance of different coverage coefficients (CC) for MEMQ algorithms. Leveraging these bounds, we develop a simple way of comparing the utilities of multiple environments in MEMQ algorithms. This approach appears to be near optimal versus our previously proposed partial ordering approach. We also present a novel CC-based MEMQ algorithm to improve the accuracy and complexity of existing MEMQ algorithms. Numerical experiments are conducted using random network graphs with four different graph properties. Our algorithm can reduce the average policy error (APE) by 65% compared to partial ordering and is 95% faster than the exhaustive search. It also achieves 60% less APE than several state-of-the-art reinforcement learning and prior MEMQ algorithms. Abstract

We present experimental evidence of orbital Hall torque and unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR), arising from the orbital Hall effect generated by the transverse flow of orbital angular momentum in light metals under an applied electric current. Through second-harmonic measurements, we investigate orbital Hall torque and UMR in bilayer devices composed of ferromagnetic materials (FM), such as Ni and NiFe, paired with light metals (LM), such as Ti and Nb. Our results demonstrate that LM/Ni bilayers exhibit enhanced damping-like torque and unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) compared to LM/NiFe bilayers. This enhancement suggests that angular momentum is generated via the orbital Hall effect within the light metal, where it undergoes orbital-to-spin conversion within the Ni ferromagnet, ultimately transferring to the magnetization of the ferromagnetic layer. Torque and UMR are also absent in single-layer devices, highlighting the necessity of the bilayer structure for orbital current generation.

10. Robustness and Confounders in the Demographic Alignment of LLMs with Human Perceptions of Offensiveness

Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) are known to exhibit demographic biases, yet few studies systematically evaluate these biases across multiple datasets or account for confounding factors. In this work, we examine LLM alignment with human annotations in five offensive language datasets, comprising approximately 220K annotations. Our findings reveal that while demographic traits, particularly race, influence alignment, these effects are inconsistent across datasets and often entangled with other factors. Confounders -- such as document difficulty, annotator sensitivity, and within-group agreement -- account for more variation in alignment patterns than demographic traits alone. Specifically, alignment increases with higher annotator sensitivity and group agreement, while greater document difficulty corresponds to reduced alignment. Our results underscore the importance of multi-dataset analyses and confounder-aware methodologies in developing robust measures of demographic bias in LLMs.

11. Visual Tracking with Intermittent Visibility: Switched Control Design and Implementation

Abstract

This paper addresses the problem of visual target tracking in scenarios where a pursuer may experience intermittent loss of visibility of the target. The design of a Switched Visual Tracker (SVT) is presented which aims to meet the competing requirements of maintaining both proximity and visibility. SVT alternates between a visual tracking mode for following the target, and a recovery mode for regaining visual contact when the target falls out of sight. We establish the stability of SVT by extending the average dwell time theorem from switched systems theory, which may be of independent interest. Our implementation of SVT on an Agilicious drone [1] illustrates its effectiveness on tracking various target trajectories: it reduces the average tracking error by up to 45% and significantly improves visibility duration compared to a baseline algorithm. The results show that our approach effectively handles intermittent vision loss, offering enhanced robustness and adaptability for real-world autonomous missions. Additionally, we demonstrate how the stability analysis provides valuable guidance for selecting parameters, such as tracking speed and recovery distance, to optimize the SVT's performance.

12. An MCMC analysis to probe trilinear RPV SUSY scenarios and possible LHC signatures

Abstract

In this article, we probe the trilinear R-parity violating (RPV) supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios with specific non-zero interactions in the light of neutrino oscillation, Higgs, and flavor observables. We attempt to fit the set of observables using a state-of-the-art Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) set-up and study its impact on the model parameter space. Our main objective is to constrain the trilinear couplings individually, along with some other SUSY parameters relevant to the observables. We present the constrained parameter regions in the form of marginalized posterior distributions on different two-dimensional parameter planes. We perform our analyses with two different scenarios characterized by our choices for the lightest SUSY particle (LSP), bino, and stop. Our results indicate that the lepton number violating trilinear couplings $\lambda_{i33}$ ($i$=1,2) and $\lambda_{j33}^{\prime}$ ($j$=1,2,3) can be at most of the order of $10^{-4}$ or even smaller while $\tan\beta$ is restricted to below 15 even when $3\sigma$ allowed regions are considered. Abstract

The field of hybrid magnonics has gained significant momentum in recent years, driven by its potential to enable coherent information transfer and quantum transduction. This study delves into the tunable magnon-magnon coupling within a two-dimensional array of Ni80Fe20 (Permalloy) square nanomagnets by modulating its internal magnetic field configuration. Using a broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the influence of the orientation of external magnetic field and microwave power on the coupling properties. Our findings reveal a pronounced anticrossing behavior, indicative of robust magnon-magnon coupling, whose strength can be tuned through both static and dynamic external parameters. The ability to modulate coupling strengths in this system highlights its potential for developing flexible and adaptive magnonic devices, crucial for future applications in quantum information processing and spintronic technologies. This work not only broadens the understanding of magnon-magnon interactions in complex geometries but also opens new avenues for the design of next-generation quantum magnonic systems.

14. FactLens: Benchmarking Fine-Grained Fact Verification

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown impressive capability in language generation and understanding, but their tendency to hallucinate and produce factually incorrect information remains a key limitation. To verify LLM-generated contents and claims from other sources, traditional verification approaches often rely on holistic models that assign a single factuality label to complex claims, potentially obscuring nuanced errors. In this paper, we advocate for a shift toward fine-grained verification, where complex claims are broken down into smaller sub-claims for individual verification, allowing for more precise identification of inaccuracies, improved transparency, and reduced ambiguity in evidence retrieval. However, generating sub-claims poses challenges, such as maintaining context and ensuring semantic equivalence with respect to the original claim. We introduce FactLens, a benchmark for evaluating fine-grained fact verification, with metrics and automated evaluators of sub-claim quality. The benchmark data is manually curated to ensure high-quality ground truth. 15. CodeLutra: Boosting LLM Code Generation via Preference-Guided Refinement

Abstract

Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly advanced code generation but often require substantial resources and tend to over-generalize, limiting their efficiency for specific tasks. Fine-tuning smaller, open-source LLMs presents a viable alternative; however, it typically lags behind cutting-edge models due to supervised fine-tuning's reliance solely on correct code examples, which restricts the model's ability to learn from its own mistakes and adapt to diverse programming challenges. To bridge this gap, we introduce CodeLutra, a novel framework that enhances low-performing LLMs by leveraging both successful and failed code generation attempts. Unlike conventional fine-tuning, CodeLutra employs an iterative preference learning mechanism to compare correct and incorrect solutions as well as maximize the likelihood of correct codes. Through continuous iterative refinement, CodeLutra enables smaller LLMs to match or surpass GPT-4's performance in various code generation tasks without relying on vast external datasets or larger auxiliary models. On a challenging data analysis task, using just 500 samples improved Llama-3-8B's accuracy from 28.2% to 48.6%, approaching GPT-4's performance. Abstract

Lensless imaging offers a significant opportunity to develop ultra-compact cameras by removing the conventional bulky lens system. However, without a focusing element, the sensor's output is no longer a direct image but a complex multiplexed scene representation. Traditional methods have attempted to address this challenge by employing learnable inversions and refinement models, but these methods are primarily designed for 2D reconstruction and do not generalize well to 3D reconstruction. We introduce GANESH, a novel framework designed to enable simultaneous refinement and novel view synthesis from multi-view lensless images. Unlike existing methods that require scene-specific training, our approach supports on-the-fly inference without retraining on each scene. Moreover, our framework allows us to tune our model to specific scenes, enhancing the rendering and refinement quality. To facilitate research in this area, we also present the first multi-view lensless dataset, LenslessScenes. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms current approaches in reconstruction accuracy and refinement quality. 17. Engineering band selective absorption with epsilon-near-zero media in the infrared

Abstract

Band-selective absorption and emission of thermal radiation in the infrared are of interest due to applications in emissivity coatings, infrared sensing, thermo-photovoltaics and solar energy harvesting. The broadband nature of thermal radiation presents distinct challenges in achieving spectral and angular selectivity, which are difficult to address by prevalent optical strategies, often yielding restrictive responses. We explore a tri-layer coating employing a nanostructured grating of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material, indium tin oxide (ITO), atop a dielectric (silicon dioxide) and metal (gold) underlayer, which shows wide-angle (0-60 degrees) and band-selective (1800 - 2800 nm) high absorption (> 0.8). Numerical simulations and experimental results reveal that the ENZ response of ITO combined with its localized plasmon resonances define the high absorption bandwidth, aided by the sandwiched dielectric's optical properties, elucidating the tunability of the absorption bandwidth. Thermal imaging in the mid-infrared highlights the relevance of the ENZ grating, emphasizing the potential of this coating design as a thermal emitter. This study offers valuable insights into light-matter interactions and opens avenues for practical applications in thermal management and energy harvesting.

Abstract

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in insulators and superconductors are known for their robust edge modes, linked to bulk invariants through the bulk-boundary correspondence. While this principle traditionally applies to gapped phases, recent advances have extended it to gapless systems, where topological edge states persist even in the absence of a bulk gap. We extend this framework to periodically driven chains with chiral symmetry, revealing the existence of topological edge zero- and pi-modes despite the lack of bulk gaps in the quasienergy spectrum. By examining the half-period decomposition of chiral evolutions, we construct topological invariants that circumvent the need to define the Floquet Hamiltonian, making them more suitable for generalization to the gapless regime. We provide explicit examples, including generalizations of the Kitaev chain and related spin models, where localized pi-modes emerge even when the bulk is gapless at the same quasi-energy as the edge modes. We numerically study the effect of interactions, which give a finite lifetime to the edge modes in the thermodynamic limit with the decay rate consistent with Fermi's Golden Rule., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

In order to improve model accuracy, generalization, and class imbalance issues, this work offers a strong methodology for classifying endoscopic images. We suggest a hybrid feature extraction method that combines convolutional neural networks (CNNs), multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), and radiomics. Rich, multi-scale feature extraction is made possible by this combination, which captures both deep and handmade representations. These features are then used by a classification head to classify diseases, producing a model with higher generalization and accuracy. In this framework we have achieved a validation accuracy of 76.2% in the capsule endoscopy video frame classification task.

Abstract

We measure the time-integrated CP asymmetry in $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}$ decays reconstructed in $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow c\overline{c}$ events collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments. The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 fb$^{-1}$ and 428 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The $D^{0}$ decays are required to originate from the $D^{*+} \rightarrow D^{0}\pi^{+}$ decay, which determines the charm flavor at production time. A control sample of $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decays is used to correct for production and detection asymmetries. Abstract

Agent learning from human interaction often relies on explicit signals, but implicit social cues, such as prosody in speech, could provide valuable information for more effective learning. This paper advocates for the integration of prosody as a teaching signal to enhance agent learning from human teachers. Through two exploratory studies--one examining voice feedback in an interactive reinforcement learning setup and the other analyzing restricted audio from human demonstrations in three Atari games--we demonstrate that prosody carries significant information about task dynamics. Our findings suggest that prosodic features, when coupled with explicit feedback, can enhance reinforcement learning outcomes. Moreover, we propose guidelines for prosody-sensitive algorithm design and discuss insights into teaching behavior. Abstract

We perform a model-independent measurement of the $D^0$-$\overline{D}{}^0$ mixing parameters using samples of $e^+e^-$-collision data collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments that have integrated luminosities of $951\ \text{fb}^{-1}$ and $408\ \text{fb}^{-1}$, respectively. Approximately $2.05\times10^6$ neutral $D$ mesons are reconstructed in the $D^0\rightarrow K^0_{S}\pi^+\pi^-$ channel, with the neutral $D$ flavor tagged by the charge of the pion in the $D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0\pi^+$ decay. Assuming charge-parity symmetry, the mixing parameters are measured to be $ x = (4.0\pm1.7\pm0.4)\times 10^{-3} $ and $ y = (2.9\pm1.4\pm0.3)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with previous determinations.

Abstract

Personalization of Large Language Models (LLMs) has recently become increasingly important with a wide range of applications. Despite the importance and recent progress, most existing works on personalized LLMs have focused either entirely on (a) personalized text generation or (b) leveraging LLMs for personalization-related downstream applications, such as recommendation systems. In this work, we bridge the gap between these two separate main directions for the first time by introducing a taxonomy for personalized LLM usage and summarizing the key differences and challenges. We provide a formalization of the foundations of personalized LLMs that consolidates and expands notions of personalization of LLMs, defining and discussing novel facets of personalization, usage, and desiderata of personalized LLMs. We then unify the literature across these diverse fields and usage scenarios by proposing systematic taxonomies for the granularity of personalization, personalization techniques, datasets, evaluation methods, and applications of personalized LLMs. Finally, we highlight challenges and important open problems that remain to be addressed. By unifying and surveying recent research using the proposed taxonomies, we aim to provide a clear guide to the existing literature and different facets of personalization in LLMs, empowering both researchers and practitioners.

25. OCEAN: Flexible Feature Set Aggregation for Analysis of Multi-omics Data

Abstract

Integrated analysis of multi-omics datasets holds great promise for uncovering complex biological processes. However, the large dimension of omics data poses significant interpretability and multiple testing challenges. Simultaneous Enrichment Analysis (SEA) was introduced to address these issues in single-omics analysis, providing an in-built multiple testing correction and enabling simultaneous feature set testing. In this paper, we introduce OCEAN, an extension of SEA to multi-omics data. OCEAN is a flexible approach to analyze potentially all possible two-way feature sets from any pair of genomics datasets. We also propose two new error rates which are in line with the two-way structure of the data and facilitate interpretation of the results. The power and utility of OCEAN is demonstrated by analyzing copy number and gene expression data for breast and colon cancer.

26. A neural network approach for solving the Monge-Amp\`ere equation with transport boundary condition

Abstract

This paper introduces a novel neural network-based approach to solving the Monge-Amp\`ere equation with the transport boundary condition, specifically targeted towards optical design applications. We leverage multilayer perceptron networks to learn approximate solutions by minimizing a loss function that encompasses the equation's residual, boundary conditions, and convexity constraints. Our main results demonstrate the efficacy of this method, optimized using L-BFGS, through a series of test cases encompassing symmetric and asymmetric circle-to-circle, square-to-circle, and circle-to-flower reflector mapping problems. Comparative analysis with a conventional least-squares finite-difference solver reveals the competitive, and often superior, performance of our neural network approach on the test cases examined here. A comprehensive hyperparameter study further illuminates the impact of factors such as sampling density, network architecture, and optimization algorithm. While promising, further investigation is needed to verify the method's robustness for more complicated problems and to ensure consistent convergence. Nonetheless, the simplicity and adaptability of this neural network-based approach position it as a compelling alternative to specialized partial differential equation solvers.

27. Embedded Graph Reconstruction under Hausdorff Noise

Abstract

Filamentary structures (topologically embedded graphs with a metric structure) are ubiquitous in science and engineering. A challenging problem in topological data analysis (TDA) is to reconstruct the topology and geometry of such an underlying (usually unknown) metric graph from possibly noisy data sampled around it. Reeb graphs have recently been successfully employed in abstract metric graph reconstruction under Gromov$\unicode{x2013}$Hausdorff noise: the sample is assumed to be metrically close to the ground truth. However, such a strong global density assumption is hardly achieved in applications, making the existing Reeb graph-based methods untractible. We relax the density assumption to give provable geometric reconstruction schemes, even when the sample is metrically close only locally. A very different yet more relevant paradigm focuses on the reconstruction of metric graphs$\unicode{x2014}$embedded in the Euclidean space$\unicode{x2014}$from Euclidean samples that are only Hausdorff-close. We further extend our methodologies to provide novel, provable guarantees for the successful geometric reconstruction of Euclidean graphs under the Hausdorff noise model. Our technique produces promising results in reconstructing earthquake plate tectonic boundaries from the global earthquake catalog.

Abstract

In this letter, we investigate how field redefinition influences the spectrum of linearized perturbations in relativistic fluid dynamics. We show that the hydrodynamic modes do not get affected under local field redefinition, whereas the non-hydrodynamic modes do. These non-hydrodynamic modes can be removed through a suitable all-order field redefinition. This process leads to a new frame containing only hydrodynamic modes, which we refer to as the hydro frame. Abstract

Physical quantities with long lifetimes have both theoretical significance in the study of quantum many-body systems and practical implications for quantum technologies. In this manuscript, we investigate the roles played by topological defects in the construction of quasi-conserved quantities, using as a prototypical example the Kramers-Wannier duality defect in a deformed 1d quantum transverse field Ising model. We construct the duality defect Hamiltonian in three different ways: half-chain Kramers-Wannier transformation, utilization of techniques in the Ising fusion category, and defect-modified weak integrability breaking deformation. The third method is also applicable for the study of generic integrable defects under weak integrability breaking deformations. We also work out the deformation of defect-modified higher charges in the model and study their slower decay behavior. Furthermore, we consider the corresponding duality defect twisted deformed Floquet transverse field Ising model, and investigate the stability of the isolated zero mode associated with the duality defect in the integrable Floquet Ising model, under such weak integrability breaking deformation., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures

Abstract

We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract

Recursion methods such as Krylov techniques map complex dynamics to an effective non-interacting problem in one dimension. For example, the operator Krylov space for Floquet dynamics can be mapped to the dynamics of an edge operator of the one-dimensional Floquet inhomogeneous transverse field Ising model (ITFIM), where the latter, after a Jordan-Wigner transformation, is a Floquet model of non-interacting Majorana fermions, and the couplings correspond to Krylov angles. We present an application of this showing that a moment method exists where given an autocorrelation function, one can construct the corresponding Krylov angles, and from that the corresponding Floquet-ITFIM. Consequently, when no solutions for the Krylov angles are obtained, it indicates that the autocorrelation is not generated by unitary dynamics. We highlight this by studying certain special cases: stable $m$-periodic dynamics derived using the method of continued fractions, exponentially decaying and power-law decaying stroboscopic dynamics. Remarkably, our examples of stable $m$-periodic dynamics correspond to $m$-period edge modes for the Floquet-ITFIM where deep in the chain, the couplings correspond to a critical phase. Our results pave the way to engineer Floquet systems with desired properties of edge modes and also provide examples of persistent edge modes in gapless Floquet systems.

Abstract

Theoretical studies have suggested that nonlinear effects can lead to "radio frequency condensation", which coalesces RF power deposition and driven current near the center of a magnetic island. It is predicted that an initially broad current profile can coalesce in islands when they reach sufficient width, providing automatic stabilization. Experimental validation of the theory has thus far been lacking. This paper proposes experiments on DIII-D for testing and refining the theory of the nonlinear effects.

We have designed and commissioned a new readout board to detect photosensor signals from gas-bubbler panels to continuously monitor the gas flow through the resistive plate chambers of the $K_L^0$ and muon detector of Belle II. Abstract

We study the mixing time of two popular discrete time Markov chains in continuous space, the unadjusted Langevin algorithm and the proximal sampler, which are discretizations of the Langevin dynamics. We extend mixing time analyses for these Markov chains to hold in $\Phi$-divergence. We show that any $\Phi$-divergence arising from a twice-differentiable strictly convex function $\Phi$ converges to $0$ exponentially fast along these Markov chains, under the assumption that their stationary distributions satisfies the corresponding $\Phi$-Sobolev inequality. Our rates of convergence are tight and include as special cases popular mixing time regimes, namely the mixing in chi-squared divergence under a Poincar\'e inequality, and the mixing in relative entropy under a log-Sobolev inequality. Abstract

We present the first quantum-centric simulations of noncovalent interactions using a supramolecular approach. We simulate the potential energy surfaces (PES) of the water and methane dimers, featuring hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions, respectively, with a sample-based quantum diagonalization (SQD) approach. Our simulations on quantum processors, using 27- and 36-qubit circuits, are in remarkable agreement with classical methods, deviating from complete active space configuration interaction (CASCI) and coupled-cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) within 1 kcal/mol in the equilibrium regions of the PES. Finally, we test the capacity limits of the quantum methods for capturing hydrophobic interactions with an experiment on 54 qubits. These results mark significant progress in the application of quantum computing to chemical problems, paving the way for more accurate modeling of noncovalent interactions in complex systems critical to the biological, chemical and pharmaceutical sciences.

Abstract

The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent charge-parity ($CP$) decay-rate asymmetries in $B^0 \to J/\psi \pi^0$ decays. The data sample was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider in 2019-2022 and contains $(387\pm 6)\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs from $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays. We reconstruct $392\pm 24$ signal decays and fit the $CP$ parameters from the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference of the two $B$ mesons. We measure the branching fraction to be $B(B^0 \to J/\psi \pi^0)=(2.02 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.10)\times 10^{-5}$ and the direct and mixing-induced $CP$ asymmetries to be $C_{CP}=0.13 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.03$ and $S_{CP}=-0.88 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.03$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe mixing-induced $CP$ violation with a significance of $5.0$ standard deviations for the first time in this mode.

Abstract

Face recognition systems (FRS) can be compromised by face morphing attacks, which blend textural and geometric information from multiple facial images. The rapid evolution of generative AI, especially Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) or Diffusion models, where encoded images are interpolated to generate high-quality face morphing images. In this work, we present a novel method for the automatic face morphing generation method \textit{MorCode}, which leverages a contemporary encoder-decoder architecture conditioned on codebook learning to generate high-quality morphing images. Extensive experiments were performed on the newly constructed morphing dataset using five state-of-the-art morphing generation techniques using both digital and print-scan data. The attack potential of the proposed morphing generation technique, \textit{MorCode}, was benchmarked using three different face recognition systems. The obtained results indicate the highest attack potential of the proposed \textit{MorCode} when compared with five state-of-the-art morphing generation methods on both digital and print scan data.

Abstract

Deepfakes pose a critical threat to biometric authentication systems by generating highly realistic synthetic media. Existing multimodal deepfake detectors often struggle to adapt to diverse data and rely on simple fusion methods. To address these challenges, we propose Gumbel-Rao Monte Carlo Bi-modal Neural Architecture Search (GRMC-BMNAS), a novel architecture search framework that employs Gumbel-Rao Monte Carlo sampling to optimize multimodal fusion. It refines the Straight through Gumbel Softmax (STGS) method by reducing variance with Rao-Blackwellization, stabilizing network training. Using a two-level search approach, the framework optimizes the network architecture, parameters, and performance. Crucial features are efficiently identified from backbone networks, while within the cell structure, a weighted fusion operation integrates information from various sources. By varying parameters such as temperature and number of Monte carlo samples yields an architecture that maximizes classification performance and better generalisation capability. Experimental results on the FakeAVCeleb and SWAN-DF datasets demonstrate an impressive AUC percentage of 95.4\%, achieved with minimal model parameters.

40. Machine learning tagged boosted dark photon: A signature of fermionic portal matter at the LHC

Abstract

We use machine learning techniques to identify a boosted dark photon jet as a signature of a heavy vector-like fermionic portal matter (PM) connecting the visible and the dark sectors. In this work, the fermionic PM which mixes only with the standard model (SM) third generation up-type quark, dominantly decays to a top quark and dark photon pair. The dark photon then decays $promptly$ to a pair of standard model fermions via the gauge kinetic mixing. We have analyzed two different final states, namely, $(i)~ exactly ~one ~tagged~ dark ~photon ~and ~exactly ~one ~tagged~ top ~quark ~jet$, and $(ii)~ at~ least~ two~tagged ~dark$ $photons~and~at ~least ~one ~tagged ~top ~quark ~jet$ at the 13 and 14 TeV LHC center of mass energies. Both these final states receive significant contributions from the pair and single production processes of the top partner. The rich event topology of the signal processes, $i.e.$, the presence of a boosted dark photon and top quark jet pair, along with the fact that the invariant mass of the system corresponds to the mass of the top partner, help us to significantly suppress the potential SM backgrounds. We have shown that one can set a $2\sigma$ exclusion limit of $3.0$ TeV on the top partner mass with $\sin\theta_L=0.1$ and assuming $100\%$ branching ratio of the top partner in the exactly one tagged dark photon and exactly one tagged top quark jet final state at the 14 TeV LHC center of mass energy assuming 300 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity., Comment: 26 pages, 12 Figures, 8 Tables

41. Suppression of Generation-Recombination Noise in Topological Insulators Through Indium Substitution

Abstract

In this work we carry out low-frequency noise spectroscopy (1/f) of highly bulk insulating and disordered thin films of (Bi0.3Sb0.7)2Te3(BST) topological insulator and compare these experimental results of these thin films with the In-doped In0.14(Bi0.3Sb0.7)1.86Te3(IBST) which has enhanced bulk insulating character. The thickness of these thin films is kept around 20nm and temperature-dependent resistance measurements show a highly bulk insulating character where the fermi level is located in the bulk band gap intersecting the Dirac cone only. The analysis of temperature-dependent power spectral density of the two thin films reveals a significant role of Indium (In) substitution in reducing the noise spectra caused by the generation-recombination mechanism in these ternary topological insulator thin films. These results offer potential for exploring topological quantum phase transitions through noise spectroscopy and suggest promising applications in the development of efficient, low-power spintronic devices that can operate near room temperature.

42. Fluid flow in 3-dimensional porous systems shows power law scaling with Minkowski functionals

Abstract

Integral geometry uses four geometric invariants -- the Minkowski functionals -- to characterize certain subsets of 3-dimensional space. The question was, how is the fluid flow in a 3-dimensional porous system related to these invariants? In this work, we systematically study the dependency of permeability on the geometrical characteristics of two categories of 3-dimensional porous systems generated: (i) stochastic and (ii) deterministic. For the stochastic systems, we investigated both normal and log-normal size distribution of grains. For the deterministic porous systems, we checked for a cubic and a hexagonal arrangement of grains of equal size. Our studies reveal that for any 3-dimensional porous system, ordered or disordered, permeability $k$ follows a unique scaling relation with the Minkowski functionals: (a) volume of the pore space, (b) integral mean curvature, (c) Euler Characteristic and (d) critical cross-sectional area of the pore space. The cubic and the hexagonal symmetrical systems formed the upper and lower bounds of the scaling relations, respectively. The disordered systems lay between these bounds. Moreover, we propose a combinatoric $F$ that weaves together the four Minkowski functionals and follows a power-law scaling with permeability. The scaling exponent is independent of particle size and distribution and has a universal value of $ 0.428$ for 3-dimensional porous systems built of spherical grains., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

43. Dynamics of Chemical Orders in Formation of Striped Patterns in Metamorphic Rocks

Abstract

The striped patterns in rocks, characterized by thin dark bands and thick light bands, are a result of the natural processes that have shaped the rocks through in situ metamorphism. Notably, the dark and light bands are composed of similar minerals, with the dark bands containing additional trapped materials such as fluid pockets or extra mineral grains. Here we employed the Gray-Scott Reaction Diffusion model to investigate the interaction between two sets of virtual chemicals, denoted as 'u' and 'v'. The differing diffusion and reaction rates of 'u' and 'v' chemical orders lead to the formation of 180 degree out-of-phase chemical domains, resulting in striped patterns. 44. Can LLMs plan paths with extra hints from solvers?

Abstract

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities in natural language processing, mathematical problem solving, and tasks related to program synthesis. However, their effectiveness in long-term planning and higher-order reasoning has been noted to be limited and fragile. This paper explores an approach for enhancing LLM performance in solving a classical robotic planning task by integrating solver-generated feedback. We explore four different strategies for providing feedback, including visual feedback, we utilize fine-tuning, and we evaluate the performance of three different LLMs across a 10 standard and 100 more randomly generated planning problems. Our results suggest that the solver-generated feedback improves the LLM's ability to solve the moderately difficult problems, but the harder problems still remain out of reach. The study provides detailed analysis of the effects of the different hinting strategies and the different planning tendencies of the evaluated LLMs.

Abstract

In this work, we study metric-Palatini gravity extended by the antisymmetric part of the affine curvature. This gravity theory leads to general relativity plus a geometric Proca field. Using our previous construction of its static spherically-symmetric AdS solution [Eur. Phys. J. C83 (2023) 4, 318], we perform a detailed analysis in this work using the observational quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) data. To this end, we use the latest data from stellar-mass black hole GRO J1655-40, intermediate-mass black hole in M82-X1, and the super-massive black hole in SgA* (our Milky Way) and perform a Monte-Carlo-Markov-Chain (MCMC) analysis to determine or bound the model parameters. Our results shed light on the allowed ranges of the Proca mass and other parameters. The results imply that our solutions can cover all three astrophysical black holes. 46. Constraining the Low Mass End of the Stellar Halo Mass Relation with Surveys of Satellite Galaxies

Abstract

The abundance of satellite galaxies is set by the hierarchical assembly of their host halo. We leverage this to investigate the low mass end ($M_{\mathrm{H}} < 10^{11} M_{\odot}$) of the Stellar-to-Halo Mass Relation (SHMR), which is key to constraining theories of galaxy formation and cosmology. We argue that recent analyses of satellite galaxies in the Local Group environment have not adequately modelled the dominant source of scatter in satellite stellar mass functions: the variance in accretion histories for a fixed host halo mass. We present a novel inference framework that not only properly accounts for this halo-to-halo variance but also naturally identifies the amount of host halo mass mixing, which is generally unknown. Specifically, we use the semi-analytical SatGen model to construct mock satellite galaxy populations consistent with the third data release of the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) survey. We demonstrate that even under the most idealized circumstances, the halo-to-halo variance makes it virtually impossible to put any meaningful constraints on the scatter in the SHMR. Even a satellite galaxy survey made up 100 hosts can at best only place an upper limit of $\sim 0.5$dex on the scatter (at the 95\% confidence level). This is because the large variance in halo assembly histories dominates over the scatter in the SHMR. This problem can be overcome by increasing the sample size of the survey by an order of magnitude ($\sim 1000$ host galaxies), something that should be fairly straightforward with forthcoming spectroscopic surveys.

47. Decorrelation-based Self-Supervised Visual Representation Learning for Writer Identification

Abstract

Self-supervised learning has developed rapidly over the last decade and has been applied in many areas of computer vision. Decorrelation-based self-supervised pretraining has shown great promise among non-contrastive algorithms, yielding performance at par with supervised and contrastive self-supervised baselines. In this work, we explore the decorrelation-based paradigm of self-supervised learning and apply the same to learning disentangled stroke features for writer identification. Here we propose a modified formulation of the decorrelation-based framework named SWIS which was proposed for signature verification by standardizing the features along each dimension on top of the existing framework. We show that the proposed framework outperforms the contemporary self-supervised learning framework on the writer identification benchmark and also outperforms several supervised methods as well. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first of its kind to apply self-supervised learning for learning representations for writer verification tasks.

48. Superfluids in expanding backgrounds and attractor times

Abstract

We determine the behavior of an out-of-equilibrium superfluid, composed of a $U(1)$ Goldstone mode coupled to hydrodynamic modes in a M\"uller-Israel-Stewart theory, in expanding backgrounds relevant to heavy ion collision experiments and cosmology. For suitable initial conditions, the evolution of the hydrodynamic variables leads to a change in the potential of the Goldstone mode, spontaneously breaking the symmetry. After some time, the condensate becomes small, leading the system evolution to be well described via hydrodynamic attractors for a timescale that we determine in Bjorken and Gubser flows. We define this new timescale as the \textit{attractor time} and show its dependence on initial conditions. In the case of the Gubser flow, we provide for the first time a complete description of the nonlinear evolution of the system, including a novel nonlinear regime of constant anisotropy not found in the Bjorken evolution. Finally, we consider the superfluid in the dynamical FLRW (Friedmann-Lemaitre-Roberston-Walker) background, where we observe a similar attractor behavior, dependent on the initial conditions, that at late times approaches a regime dominated by the condensate., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

We show that the average of the maximum teleportation fidelities between all pairs of nodes in a large quantum repeater network is a measure of the resourcefulness of the network as a whole. We use simple Werner state-based models to characterise some fundamental (loopless) topologies (star, chain, and some trees) with respect to this measure in three (semi)realistic scenarios. Most of our results are analytic and are applicable for arbitrary network sizes. We identify the parameter ranges where these networks can achieve quantum advantages and show the large-N behaviours.

Abstract

Ensuring autonomous vehicle (AV) security remains a critical concern. An area of paramount importance is the study of physical-world adversarial examples (AEs) aimed at exploiting vulnerabilities in perception systems. However, most of the prevailing research on AEs has neglected considerations of stealthiness and legality, resulting in scenarios where human drivers would promptly intervene or attackers would be swiftly detected and punished. These limitations hinder the applicability of such examples in real-life settings. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to generate AEs using what we term negative shadows: deceptive patterns of light on the road created by strategically blocking sunlight, which then cast artificial lane-like patterns. These shadows are inconspicuous to a driver while deceiving AV perception systems, particularly those reliant on lane detection algorithms. By prioritizing the stealthy nature of attacks to minimize driver interventions and ensuring their legality from an attacker's standpoint, a more plausible range of scenarios is established. In multiple scenarios, including at low speeds, our method shows a high safety violation rate. Using a 20-meter negative shadow, it can direct a vehicle off-road with a 100% violation rate at speeds over 10 mph. Other attack scenarios, such as causing collisions, can be performed with at least 30 meters of negative shadow, achieving a 60-100% success rate. The attack also maintains an average stealthiness of 83.6% as measured through a human subject experiment, ensuring its efficacy in covert settings.
