Marija Alseikaitė-Gimbutienė (Gimbutas) (1921-1994) gimė ir užaugo Lietuvoje, gydytojų, mokslininkų, istorikų ir intelektualų šeimoje. Buvo atsidavusi lietuvių kalbos, tapatybės ir liaudies kultūros išsaugojimui. Ji studijavo archeologiją pas profesorių dr. Joną Puziną, kuris buvo pirmasis aukštuosius mokslus baigęs archeologas nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje (1918-1940). Jo sistemingi kursai Vytauto Didžiojo universitete Kaune ir Vilniaus universitete padėjo šios disciplinos mokslinį pagrindą. Marija Gimbutienė buvo atsidėjusi mokslui. Ji nuodugniai studijavo Rytų Europos archeologijos, baltų priešistorės, indoeuropiečių kalbotyros, etnologijos, istorijos, tautosakos, mitologijos ir Europos kalbų dalykus, kuriuos jai dėstė geriausi tų sričių Lietuvos mokslininkai. Ji dalyvavo etnografinėse ekspedicijose, jose rinko tautosaką ir kaimo moterų išsaugotus dainų žodžius. 1942 m. Vilniaus universitete įgijo magistro laipsnį apgynusi baigiamąjį darbą "Laidosena Lietuvoje geležies amžiuje". 1946 m. Tiubingeno universitete Vokietijoje ji įgijo archeologijos daktaro laipsnį. 1949 m. Marija Gimbutienė emigravo į Jungtines Amerikos Valstijas. Savo mokslinių tyrimų ir rašymo metais Harvardo universitete, o vėliau dirbdama Europos archeologijos profesore Kalifornijos universitete Los Andžele, Marija Gimbutienė buvo pripažinta pasaulinio lygio Rytų Europos priešistorės ir indoeuropiečių bronzos amžiaus žinove. Šiame straipsnyje pasakojama apie nuostabų Marijos Gimbutienės stambių knygų bei straipsnių rašymą ir pasiekimus moksle, kuriuos paskatino jos daugiadalykis išsilavinimas, įgytas Lietuvoje. Be to, aptariama jos dėmesys lietuvių liaudies simbolikai, kurganų hipotezės formuluotė ir kasinėjimai Pietryčių Europoje. Taip pat nagrinėjama jos skelbta Senosios Europos, kaip taikios, matrifokalinės, ne indoeuropietiškos civilizacijos, teorija, tarpdalykinė archeomitologijos formuluotė ir senovės žemės, kaip gyvybės šaltinio, garbinimo pripažinimas. Be viso to, šis straipsnis aprašo Marijos Gimbutienės sugrįžimą į Lietuvą metai prieš jos mirtį, kai jai buvo suteiktas Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto garbės daktaro vardas. Marija Alseikaitė-Gimbutienė (Gimbutas) (1921-1994) was born and raised in Lithuania within a family of physicians and intellectuals devoted to the preservation of Lithuanian folk culture. She studied archaeology with Professor Jonas Puzinas who was the first scientifically trained archaeologist in independent Lithuania. Marija Gimbutas was thoroughly trained in Eastern European archaeology, Baltic prehistory, Indo-European linguistics, ethnology, history, folklore, mythology, and European languages taught by the most accomplished Lithuanian scholars in their fields. In 1942 she earned a Master՚s degree at Vilnius University for her thesis on "Burial Practices in the Lithuanian Iron Age." In 1946 she earned her doctorate in archaeology from Tübingen University in Germany before immigrating to the United States in 1949. This paper traces her prodigious production of major publications and scholarly achievements fostered by her multidisciplinary education in Lithuania. It discusses the development of her Kurgan hypothesis, her excavations in Southeastern Europe, her theory of Old Europe, her formulation of archaeomythology, and the ancient veneration of the earth as the source of life. Bet kurios tautos tautosakoje yra išgalvotų personažų, kasdieniame gyvenime vadinamų „piktosiomis dvasiomis“ arba tiesiog „kitų pasaulių jėgomis“. Taip pat yra gerųjų personažų, kurie visada padeda ir daro gerus darbus. Kilę iš primityvios mūsų nutolusių protėvių sąmonės, jie išreiškė nuostabų stabilumą. Žinoma, ne visi be išimties, tačiau būtina sutikti, kad tai daro juos dar paslaptingesnius ir patrauklesnius mums. Šiame straipsnyje nagrinėjami folkloriniai mitologiniai kazachų ir lietuvių tautų vaizdai mene. Išsiaiškinta, kad kazachų ir lietuvių mitologijose yra gana daug įvairių būtybių, persekiojusių žmogų tais tolimaisiais laikais. Straipsnyje aprašomos kai kurios mitologinės kazachų ir lietuvių būtybės, kurios buvo plačiai vaizduojamos eilėraščiuose, mituose, legendose, epuose, pasakose, vaikų pasakose, prozoje, eilėraščiuose ir mene. Mene nėra tiek daug kūrybinių darbų mitologijos tema. Atlikta kūrybinių darbų iš Kazachstano ir Lietuvos analizė, nagrinėti meno kūriniai. Išvedamas teiginys, kad kazachų mitologijoje yra daug šventų gyvūnų, tai yra iš kai kurių apraiškų matome, jog jos pagrindą sudaro totemizmas. O lietuvių mitologija labiau linkusi į senovės mitologiją, pavyzdžiui, Graikijos, Romos ir Egipto mitus. Lietuviai, kaip ir šių tautų atstovai, garbino daugybę dievų, kurie, vadovaudamiesi savo įsitikinimais, gyveno šventosiose giraitėse. Tačiau yra ir panašių abiejų mitologijų aspektų. In the folklore of any nation, there always have been the fictional characters, which in everyday life are called “evil spirits” or simply “forces of other worlds”. There are also good characters, they always help, and do good deeds. Having originated in the primitive consciousness of our remote ancestors, these characters have expressed amazing stability. Not all without exception, of course, and not in absolutely all diversity, but it is necessary to accept that this makes them even more mysterious and attractive to us. In this article, folklore mythological images of the Kazakh and Lithuanian peoples in art have been considered. As it turned out, Kazakh and Lithuanian mythologies have a rich list of various creatures that persecuted man in those distant times. The article describes some mythological creatures of Kazakh and Lithuanian mythology, whose images were widely spread in poems, myths, legends, epics, tales, children’s fairy tales, prose, poems, and in art. There are not so many creative works on the subject of mythology in art. The analysis of creative works from the Kazakh and Lithuanian works of art is made. The statement is derived that Kazakh mythology has a large number of sacred animals, that is, its basis is totemism in some of its manifestations. As for Lithuanian mythology, it tends more towards the mythology of ancient times, like the mythology of Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Lithuanians, as well as representatives of these peoples, worshiped a huge number of gods who, according to their beliefs, lived in sacred groves. The aim is to evaluate Rowling’s world of fairy tales and its adherence to the criteria of a fantasy secondary world according to the frameworks proposed by T. Todorov (1973), R. Jackson (1981), and F. Mendlesohn (2008). The secondary world in the Harry Potter series, the wizarding world, is open to the real world and shares its geography, yet hidden from non-magical people. It is consistently described with its own culture, customs, traditions, and social norms. The central conflict is between Good and Evil for domination, with Evil aiming to extend its power to both the magic world and the real world. The fantasy world is relatable to readers due to its handling of universal themes and issues relevant to their lives, transferring characters into new life conditions. Mythonymy of Interwar KaunasThe present article describes and examines the lexical tissue of the city of Kaunas related to the pagan past of the Balts – Prussians and Lithuanians. The mythonyms appear basically in three periods of the city’s existence: in the interwar period, at the turn of the 1990s and after 2004, i.e. at critical and borderline moments, when emphasising individuality, exposing identity and referring to its sources was of utmost importance. The most interesting phenomena took place in the interwar period, when by placing in the city tissue numerous objects with names borrowed from Baltic mythology, collective memory was clearly shaped and mobilised in the space previously marked by “strangers” – Imperial Russia and the German Empire. In this way, this space was effectively tamed. The importance of this process is evidenced by dozens of names associated with the pagan Balts (Kaunas is a phenomenon in this respect on the map of Lithuania), which were given in the interwar period mostly to streets and buildings located, importantly, in the then very centre of the city. In the other two periods, mythonyms were not so popular anymore: the names of deities and other creatures historically worshiped by Lithuanians were usually given to streets far away from the city centre, often in newly created districts. Thanks to this, however, Kaunas has a clearly drawn identity that spreads from the centre towards the suburbs. A place that is thoroughly permeated with the “spirit of Lithuanianness” is the Unity Square (Lith. Vienybės aikštė), scrupulously cleansed of the traces of the aforementioned dependencies, whose important point is an inconspicuous dwarf who watches over the symbolic spring of the Lithuanian nation. It is this mythonymic element that is treated with special attention in this article, and on its example, a detailed cultural analysis of the city’s space is proposed. It should be emphasised that in Kaunas the mythonyms form a thought-out, multi-layered structure, as if a separate city that is inaccessible and foreign to the strangers. The study discusses individual collections and elements of this extensive web of meanings, deliberately created by town planners and urban designers, the basis of which is the historical experience of Kaunas and Lithuania.Mitonimia międzywojennego KownaCelem artykułu jest opis i analiza tkanki nazewniczej Kowna, związanej z pogańską przeszłością Bałtów – Prusów i Litwinów. Mitonimy pojawiają się zasadniczo w trzech okresach istnienia miasta: w międzywojniu, na przełomie lat 80. i 90. oraz po roku 2004, a więc w momentach przełomowych, granicznych, kiedy podkreślanie odrębności, eksponowanie tożsamości i sięganie do jej źródeł ma niepoślednie znaczenie. Najbardziej interesujące zjawiska zachodzą w okresie międzywojennym, kiedy to poprzez umieszczanie w tkance miasta licznych obiektów o nazwach zapożyczonych z mitologii bałtyckiej wyraźnie kształtowano i mobilizowano zbiorową pamięć w przestrzeni naznaczonej wcześniej przez „obcych” – Cesarstwo Rosyjskie i Cesarstwo Niemieckie. W taki też sposób skutecznie tę przestrzeń oswajano. O randze tego procesu świadczą dziesiątki nazw powiązanych z pogańskimi Bałtami (Kowno jest pod tym względem ewenementem na mapie Litwy), które nadano w międzywojniu w przeważającej większości ulicom i innym obiektom, mieszczącym się, co ważne, w ówczesnym ścisłym centrum miasta. W pozostałych dwóch okresach mitonimy nie są już tak popularne, imionami bóstw i innych istot czczonych dawniej przez Litwinów nazywa się przeważnie ulice znacznie oddalonych od śródmieścia dzielnic, często nowo utworzonych. Dzięki temu jednak Kowno zyskuje wyraźnie nakreśloną tożsamość, która promieniuje od centrum w stronę przedmieść. Miejscem na wskroś przenikniętym „duchem litewskości” jest oczyszczony skrupulatnie ze śladów wspomnianych zależności Plac Jedności (lit. Vienybės aikštė), którego ważny punkt stanowi niepozorny, czuwający przy symbolicznym źródle narodu litewskiego krasnoludek. Ten właśnie element mitonimiczny potraktowany został ze szczególną uwagą, a na jego przykładzie dokonano szczegółowej analizy kulturoznawczej przestrzeni miasta. Należy podkreślić, że w Kownie mitonimy układają się w przemyślaną, wielowątkową strukturę, można by rzec – miasto osobne, które dla przybysza może być niedostępne i obce. Artykuł omawia poszczególne zbiory i elementy tej rozbudowanej, z rozmysłem przez urbanistów i planistów utworzonej siatki znaczeń, której osnowę stanowi historyczne doświadczenie Kowna i Litwy.

Šio straipsnio tikslas – atsakyti į Mažosios Lietuvos tautinio kostiumo tekstilinio krepšelio raidos tyrime iškilusius klausimus, susijusius su krepšelio gaminimo ir dėvėjimo motyvacija, dekoro charakteristikų pasirinkimu, ornamentikos ir spalvinių derinių simbolika. Atliktų lauko tyrimų analizė atskleidžia etnokultūrinės tapatybės raiškos per tekstilinių krepšelių gaminimą ir dėvėjimą apraiškas. Pasirenkamiems krepšelio dekoravimo elementams tradiciškai priskiriamų ir naujai suteikiamų simbolinių prasmių analizė parodo simbolio tęstinumo bei kaitos atvejus. Krepšelio dėvėjimas ne tik su Mažosios Lietuvos tautiniu kostiumu atskleidžia asmens tapatybės raišką per pasirinktų aprangos detalių dėvėjimą. Tekstilinių krepšelių gaminimas aktyvėja augant paklausai. Tyrime analizuojama pagal autorės sudarytus klausimynus iš gerai informuotų pateikėjų (tekstilinių krepšelių gamintojų ir dėvėtojų) surinkta medžiaga. The purpose of this article is to answer the questions raised in the course of the research on the development of textile pocket of the national costume of Lithuania Minor in relation to the motivation for production and wearing of pockets, the choice in decoration characteristics, the symbolism of ornamentation and colour combinations. The analysis of the accomplished field research reveals the manifestations of the expression of the ethnocultural identity through production and wearing of textile pockets. The analysis of the symbolic meanings traditionally attributed and newly assigned to the chosen decorative elements of pockets reveals the cases of the continuity and change of a symbol. The act of wearing a pocket not only with the national costume of Lithuania Minor demonstrates the expression of one’s identity through wearing the chosen parts of clothing. The growing demand stimulates the production of textile pockets. The research analyses the material collected from the well-informed presenters (makers and wearers of textile pockets) based on the questionnaires compiled by the author of the present article.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos mitologinės baltų ir slavų paralelės: mitinių personažų tipologija, bendroji leksika ir skoliniai, kaimyninių tautų mitinių sistemų tarpusavio įtakos. Siūlomos naujos baltų ir slavų mitinių personažų paralelės: Rugių boba – Баба Руга (Рога); Pikulas – pikulík; nelabais, nelabasis – nelapši, nelapszy, analizuojamos etnolingvistiniu aspektu – kaip mitiniai personažai ir kaip terminai, mitologinės leksikos elementai. Ypatingas dėmesys skiriamas leksemų etimologijai. Atskleistos naujos paralelės teikia duomenų slavų ir baltų etno- ir glotogenezės klausimams. The article discusses problems connected with Balto-Slavic mythological parallels, including typology of mythological characters, lexical similarities resulting from genetic affinity and borrowing, as well as the influence of mythological systems of neighbouring peoples. Some new Balto-Slavic parallels have been suggested, viz. Rugių boba – Baba Ruga (Roga); Pikulas – pikulík; nelabais, and nelabasis – nelapši, nelapszy, with the focus on their ethnolinguistic aspect, both as mythological characters and as elements of the mythological lexicon. Special attention has been paid to the etymology of these words. The new parallels between the two groups of related languages provides additional material related to Slavic and Baltic ethno- and glottogeny.

Straipsnyje lyginamos pasakos – Rudolfo Blaumanio „Velniukai“ (latv. „Velniņi“) ir Juliaus Kaupo „Kaip velnias Juoduodegis blogais keliais nuėjo“. Pasitelkiant literatūrinės komparatyvistikos metodą, lyginama tekstų struktūra, erdvė, laikas; velnio vaizdavimas (išorė, amžius, charakteris); meninės priemonės. Straipsnyje remiamasi Norberto Vėliaus monografija „Chtoniškasis lietuvių mitologijos pasaulis: folklorinio velnio analizė“. Prieita prie išvadų, kad skirtingoms lietuvių ir latvių kultūroms priklausančius R. Blaumanio ir J. Kaupo kūrinius sieja velnias, sūnaus palaidūno motyvas. Šie rašytojai velnių gyvenamąją ir pasirodymo vietas bei išvaizdą vaizduoja laikydamiesi folkloro tradicijų. Autoriai sukūrė skirtingus charakterius: ryškiaspalvį Juoduodegį ir tipiškesnius velniukus. Humoras, ironija ir paradoksalios situacijos – meninės priemonės, jungiančios abu kūrinius. This article compares two fairytales: “The Little Devils” (Latvian “Velniņi”) by Rudolfs Blaumanis and “How the Blacktail Devil Went Down Bad Roads” (Lithuanian “Kaip velnias Juoduodegis blogais keliais nuėjo”) by Julius Kaupas. With the help of a literary comparativist analysis, the structure of the texts; their space and time; the depiction of the devil in terms of his outer appearance, age, and character; and the artistic means of depiction employed are compared. The basis of the article is Norbertas Vėlius’s study “The Chthonic World of Lithuanian Mythology: An Analysis of the Folklore Devil.” The conclusion is reached that the fairytales of R. Blaumanis and J. Kaupas, though belonging to different (Latvian and Lithuanian) cultures, have in common the motif of the devil as a prodigal son. The places the devils live in and appear as well as their looks are portrayed by the writers in keeping with their folklore traditions. The characters created by the authors are different: Blacktail sports bright colors while the little devils are more humdrum. Humor, irony, and paradoxical situations are the artistic means the two fairytales have in common; just as the common human values, good and evil, are often correlated, while the circumstances of life are often unpredictable.

Straipsnis skirtas svastikai, ja paženklintiems arba svastikos formą turintiems daiktams, kurie priklauso XIII– XIV a. Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės laikotarpio horizontui. Ieškoma atsakymo į klausimą, koks jis – universalus ženklas ir simbolis – senovės lietuvių kultūros ir religijos terpėje, kokių būta svastikos formų ir ją lydinčių mitinių reikšmių. XIII–XIV a. archeologinėje medžiagoje svastikos nėra gausios, tačiau užima reikšmingą vietą. Jos ženklina tokius vienetinius apeiginius daiktus kaip Vilniaus Gedimino pilies kieme rastas raginis dviašmenis kirvis (1 pav.) ir tokius brangius dirbinius kaip Kernavės (Kriveikiškio) kapinyno kapuose rasti sidabro lydinio žiedai. Apskritai svastika buvo ženklinami ir kasdienei apyvokai, ir šventėms (ar konkrečioms apeigoms) skirti daiktai, pagaminti iš rago, medžio, molio, spalvotų metalų (2–6, 10, 11 pav.). Tačiau ženklas turėjo skirtingas formas, jo vaizdavimo kanono nebūta (7–9 pav.). Beje, svastikos statiniai ant vienpusių daiktų vienodai dažnai buvo kreipiami abiem kryptimis, o ant dvipusių daiktų svastika vienu metu žiūrėjo į abi puses, kas pasakytina ir apie sutampančius veidrodinius jos atvaizdus. Reikšmingi taip pat gali būti tyrinėjant ženklo braižymo schemą išryškėję skirtumai – ant rago ir medžio svastikos raižytos bent jau trejopai (12 pav.): 1) Kryžmos viena su kita stačiu kampu buvo kryžiuojamos paprastai, ir tai yra pirminė, bene labiausiai paplitusi, forma, kuri nuolat kartojasi XIX a. – XX a. pirmosios pusės etnografinėje medžiagoje; 2) Prie vienos iš kryžmų buvo jungiamos kitos kryžmos pusės – ši forma artima daugiausia iš vytinių juostų ir kitų archeologinių bei etnografinių objektų žinomiems pusinės svastikos variantams; 3) Visos keturios svastikos alkūnės iš centro buvo rėžiamos atskirai, ir ši svastikos schema iš esmės skiriasi nuo pirmųjų dviejų. Tokia forma artima svastikai, kurios centre buvo paliekamas tuščias įrėmintas plotas, o tai yra vienas iš dviejų Saulės ženklo tipų. Svastika paženklintų arba svastikos formą turinčių daiktų kontekstuose išniro du XIII a. lietuvių panteono dievai suverenai – Perkūnas ir Kalvelis. Tai patvirtina genetinį svastikos ryšį su baltų ir senovės lietuvių religinei tradicijai būdingu ugnies ženklu – lygiakraščiu kryžiumi. Nėra pagrindo manyti, kad du arba keturi jo statiniai keistų simbolinę reikšmę. Tačiau papildomą apsauginę funkciją teikė viso šio ženklo pasukimas 45 laipsnių kampu. Ryšys su ugnimi ir Perkūnu senovės lietuvių svastiką skiria nuo universalaus simbolio. Šiandien dar trūksta duomenų pasakyti, ar šis skirtumas kilo kitados svastikai su soliarine simbolika patekus į baltiškąją terpę, ar yra nepriklausomos šio ženklo, pažįstamo visoms indoeuropiečių ir daugeliui kitų kultūrų, raidos pasekmė. The paper focuses on the swastika, artefacts of antler, wood, metal and clay marked with the swastika, and swastika-shaped items from the 13th and 14th centuries in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. An answer is sought to the question what the swastika, a universal sign and symbol, represented in ancient Lithuanian culture and religion, and what kinds of shapes and accompanying mythological meanings it possessed. It is concluded that in the 13th and 14th centuries, the swastika did not have a canon of representation, and its perpendiculars on one-sided items faced in one or the other rotary direction (clockwise or anti-clockwise), while on two-sided ones they faced in both directions simultaneously. Two Lithuanian gods, Perkūnas (Thunder) and Kalvelis (Blacksmith), emerged in the explored contexts of items marked with a swastika. This confirms the genetic connection between the swastika and an equilateral cross, the sign of fire or Thunder, characteristic of the Baltic and ancient Lithuanian religious tradition. To date, there is no reason to believe that the perpendiculars could change the symbolic meaning.

Straipsnyje, pasitelkus muziejų eksponatus, ikonografijos ir naratyvinius šaltinius, dailės istorijos ir archeologijos, folkloro duomenis bei tipologinę komparatyvinę formos, funkcijos, ikonografijos ir semantikos analizę, dekonstrukciją ir rekonstrukciją, nagrinėjama Kernavės „Perkūno“ bronzos skulptūrėlės formos ir turinio, kilmės, analogijų ir vietinio kultūrinio kontekstualumo problema. Visi Lietuvoje žinomi senieji Perkūno atvaizdai yra abejotinos kilmės, abejotino autentiškumo ir abejotino tapatumo su Perkūnu. Autorius kritiškai kvestionuoja Lietuvos mokslo minties raidoje įsivyravusią vienareikšmę „Kernavės Perkūno“ semantikos ir stilistikos, kaip krikščioniškos romaninės importinės žvakidės, atsitiktinai atgabentos iš Vokietijos Saksonijos, ir nesusijusios nei su Perkūnu, nei su vietos kultūra, interpretaciją. Atskleidžiamas jos semantikos artimumas neišlikusiai kitai įvežtinei (iš Vakarų Europos) Kauno „Perkūno namų“ Perkūno skulptūrėlei bei kitiems Lietuvoje žinomiems seniesiems Perkūno atvaizdams. Remiantis nagrinėjamų atvaizdų atributais, iškeliama hipotezė apie gerokai senesnę, nei krikščioniška, galimai keltišką šios ir kitų Lietuvoje buvusių Griausmavaldžio skulptūrų ir grafinių atvaizdų ikonografijos kilmę, jos ryšį su Antikine tradicija (graikų, romėnų, keltų) bei jų semantikos akulturaciją ir adaptaciją vietinėje Perkūno kulto tradicijoje. The article examines the content, origin, analogies and local cultural significance of the Kernavė Perkūnas bronze sculpture analysing museum exhibits, iconographic and narrative sources, art history, archeology and folklore data. The typological comparative analysis of form, function, iconography and semantics of investigated artefacts and also deconstruction and reconstruction is applied. The problems of the content of the bronze sculpture of “Perkūnas from Kernavė”, its origin, analogies and local cultural contextuality are analyzed. All ancient images of Thundergod in Lithuania are of dubious origin and authenticity, and of dubious identity with the Thundergod. The author critically questions the unambiguous interpretation of the semantics and function of „Perkūnas from Kernavė“ which prevailed in the Lithuanian scientific thought. It was interpreted as a Christian Romanesque imported candlestick, accidentally brought from German Saxony and unrelated to regional culture and Baltic Thundergod Perkūnas. Its cultural proximity to another imported from Western Europe artefact of the Perkūnas sculpture from Kaunas Perkūnas House and other well-known images of Perkūnas is revealed. Based on the comparative analysis of the attributes of analyzed images, a hypothesis is raised about the much older origin of their iconography and its association with the Antique tradition (Greek, Roman, Celtic) and their local acculturation in Lithuanian religious-cultural life. Aprašyti prūsų, lietuvių ir latvių mitologiją viename veikale yra nemenkas iššūkis, nes medžiagos yra labai daug, ji įvairių laikotarpių ir iš labai skirtingų šaltinių (istoriniai veikalai, tautosaka, lingvistinė medžiaga), o kur dar baltų kalbų ir kultūrų skirtumai. Autoriai pasirinko enciklopedinį kelią (įvade pabrėžiama, kad „knyga siekia būti baltų tautų mitologijos enciklopedija“) ir bando aprėpti šią medžiagą per atskiriems dievams skirtus straipsnius, pateikiamus abėcėline tvarka. Knygoje yra net 270 originalių enciklopedinių straipsnių. Sklaidant šią knygą žavi drąsus pasiryžimas sujungti lietuvių ir latvių mitologinę medžiagą. Tai itin retas dalykas, nes lietuvių ir latvių mitologai paprastai linkę apsiriboti arba lietuvišku-prūsišku, arba latvišku kontekstu. Iš lietuvių turbūt vienintelė mokslininkė, bandžiusi sintetiškai aprašyti bendrą baltų religinę sistemą, yra Marija Gimbutienė; neatsitiktinai knygoje ji ne sykį minima. Visgi autoriams svarbesni yra Viačeslavo V. Ivanovo ir Vladimiro Toporovo darbai, kuriuose baltų mitologija išvedama į platesnius vandenis, jungiant ją su slavų, germanų, senovės indų tradicijomis. Václavas Blažekas šiuos du mokslininkus ir Jaaną Puhvelą bei Ilją Lemeškiną pavadina savo vedliais į baltų mitologiją iš indoeuropietiškosios tyrimų perspektyvos. Turbūt nereikėtų stebėtis, kad lingvistų parašyto mitologijos žodyno pagrindas yra ne dievai, o dievavardžiai – jie sudaro didžiumos straipsnių antraštes. [...]

Keliuose pastaruosiuose autoriaus straipsniuose (Razauskas 2019a, c; 2020, 2022) buvo pristatyta ir nagrinėta mitinė kosmogonija aptveriant, t. y. pasaulio 'sutvėrimo tvora' ir 'aptverto' pasaulio vaizdinys, šiuo atžvilgiu pateisinantis ir paties žodžio 'sutvėrimas' kosmogoninę reikšmę. Pirmajame iš jų plėtojama piliakalnių pylimo ir pilių statybos sąsaja su kosmogonija, taip įtaigiai iškelta Gintaro Beresnevičiaus. Antrajame konkrečiais pavyzdžiais parodoma, jog pasaulis gali būti įsivaizduojamas kaip visa apimantis kosminis aptvaras, kurio vidus atstoja „šiapus“, o išorė „anapus“. Taigi šiapusinį pasaulį nuo anapusinio skirianti savotiška kosminė tvora. Savo ruožtu, žiūrint iš „anos“ pusės, lygiai taip pat aptvertas yra anapusinis pasaulis, irgi būdingai suvokiamas kaip aptvaras. O pilies, miesto, sodo ir pasaulio kaip 'gardo' vaizdinys ir apibūdinimas aptartas paskutiniajame iš minėtų autoriaus straipsnių. Dabar, remdamiesi visų pirma baltų bei artimiausių giminiškų tradicijų duomenimis, apžvelgsime anapusinio pasaulio vaizdinius, paremtus atitinkamai gyvulių aptvaro (gardo, diendaržio, tvarto) ir augalų aptvaro (irgi „gardo“, daržo, sodo) įvaizdžiais. Pakeliui bus trumpai aptartas ir vietovardis 'Raigardas'. Straipsnį sudaro trys dalys, iš kurių pirmojoje nagrinėjamas anapusinį pasaulį menantis „gyvulių gardo“ įvaizdis, antrojoje – galimos 'Raigardo' sampratos, o trečiojoje – aptverto sodo („augalų gardo“) įvaizdis. Several articles by the author was already published recently on the mythical image of the world as cosmic enclosure, as fencedaround and created namely by fencing (cf. Lith. 'su-tvėrimas' ‘fencing’ and ‘creation by fencing, world creation, cosmogony’). On the social level, every settlement (homestead, town, citadel, city) can be conceived as an embodiment of this mythical worldenclosure representing self-contained microcosm. One of the vivid examples of such a world-image is the Germanic Midgard (*'midja-gardaz' ‘world’ >Gotic 'midjun-gards', Old Norse 'mið-garðr', Old English 'middan-geard', etc.) which, with its Baltic connotations, was examined recently in the special article. Thus, the world can be represented as an all-embracing cosmic enclosure, a kind of a hudge fenced-in yard, whose inside amounts to the “this world”, and the outside, to the “beyond”, with particular cosmic fence between them. Furher on, this same fence, when looked from the other side, can be conceived as enclosing the “other world” as well. Anyway, the beyond is regularly represented as an enclosure too. This time, with refference to the Baltic and some akin traditions, with inevitable comparative data whatever, the image of the enclosured paradise is dealt with. Firstly – the paradise as fenced around pasture, a kind of pen, and the souls in it as herd (of sheep, for example), and the god of the dead as their shepherd, or pastor. This kind of paradise can be dedected under the Lithuanian oikonym 'Rai-gardas', by the way. Secondly, the paradise as fenced around garden, like the very 'paradise', Old Iranian 'pairidaēza', namely ‘enclosured, fenced around place, enlosure’. (Cf. both meanings, ‘garden’ and ‘pen’, in derivatives of the same Indo-European noun *'ghor-dhos / *ģhor-dhos' ‘enclosure, ring-fence’, as English 'garden' and Lithuanian 'gardas' ‘pen’.). Pastaruoju metu autoriaus jau buvo paskelbti keli straipsniai, kuriuose pristatyta ir nagrinėta mitinė kosmogonija aptveriant, t. y. pasaulio 'sutvėrimo tvora' vaizdinys, pateisinantis ir paties žodžio 'sutvėrimas' kosmogoninę reikšmę. Šiuo atveju pasaulis įsivaizduojamas kaip visa apimantis kosminis aptvaras, kurį socialinėje tikrovėje įkūnija kiekviena žmonių gyvenvietė, telkianti savyje daugiau mažiau uždarą bendruomenę (pilis, miestas, 'gardas'). Of the 138 chests of drawers in the collection of the National Museum of Lithuania’s Department of Ethnic Culture and Anthropology, 35% bear the motif of a bird (25 chests and two coppers). The assumption that most of the chests of drawers are from Samogitia and Aukštaitija is confirmed. The hypothesis is put that birds on Samogitian chests of drawers are often part of the composition, mostly plants, usually in the same colours as the plant or the flower, and in this case it is quite difficult to recognise the birds and their species. This is confirmed by the artefacts in the National Museum of Lithuania’s ethnographic drawings, with some exceptions (30 ethnographic drawings with a bird image out of 1,000). Meanwhile, the slightly more contrasting decoration (brighter, with more expressive colours) of chests of drawers usually identifies the species of bird: usually a composition of chickens, roosters and hens, on both sides of a plant, often complemented by a pair of storks. Chickens, especially roosters, are associated with abundance and wealth in the decoration of chests of drawers, and the stork is also associated with abundance and fertility. Unfortunately, neither the National Museum of Lithuania nor the LIMIS system was able to detect the bird motif in chests of drawers from Suvalkija, Dzūkija and Lithuania Minor. Of course, it is not the final conclusion that there were no chests of drawers with a bird motif in Suvalkija, Dzūkija or Lithuania Minor. That will be confirmed or denied by visits to the collections of other Lithuanian museums. Šiame straipsnyje tiriami paukščių paminėjimai ir funkcijos „Baltų religijos ir mitologijos šaltiniuose“. Aptariami bendrieji paukščių paminėjimai „Baltų religijos ir mitologijos šaltiniuose“, taip pat išskiriami baltų ir lietuvių gentims – prūsams, žemaičiams, kt. – svarbūs paukščiai ir jų gerbimo ar garbinimo specifika. Šis tyrimas yra naujas, tyrimo objektas anksčiau nebuvo detaliai analizuotas. This article examines the functional roles and mentioning of the birds in Baltic religious and mythological sources. After reviewing the four volumes of the sources of Baltic religion and mythology, it becomes obvious that poultry, specifically roosters, hens and their versatile functions are mentioned most often: use for sacrifices, divination, use during the main transformations of human life: baptism, weddings, funerals. Despite a few mentions, our ancestors hardly worshiped birds as gods. They are likely revered as mediums between humans and gods, as well as between the worlds of the living and the dead. Straipsnyje aiškinamasi, kas galėjo lemti vieno iš žymiausių ir populiariausių lietuvių kultūroje literatūrinių padavimų – pasakojimo apie Baltijos jūros karalienės deivės Jūratės ir mirtingojo žvejo Kastyčio meilę siužeto atsiradimą, apžvelgiama jo mokslinių tyrinėjimų istorija. Daugumos mokslininkų nuomone, padavimą „Baltijos jūros karalienė“ sukūrė lietuvių raštijos veikėjas, etnografas, tautosakininkas, literatas, istorikas ir vertėjas Liudvikas Adomas Jucevičius (Ludwik Adam Jucewicz, 1813–1846). Straipsnyje tiriami pirmieji atsiliepimai apie padavimą, aiškinamasi, kaip mokslo pasaulyje buvo prieita išvados, kad šis šaltinis – neautentiškas. The article explains what may have led to the appearance of one of the most famous and popular legend in Lithuanian culture about the love of the Queen of the Baltic Sea, Jūratė, and the mortal fisherman Kastytis, and looks at the history of its research. According to most scholars, the legend “Queen of the Baltic Sea” was created by Liudvikas Adomas Jucevičius (Ludwik Adam Jucewicz, 1813–1846), a Lithuanian writer, ethnographer, folklorist, historian and translator. The article examines the first reviews of the story and explains how the academic world came to the conclusion that this source is not authentic. It also investigates which sources may have influenced Jucevičius’ story, including mythological plots and the literary works by other authors. Straipsnyje pagrindinis dėmesys sutelkiamas į dviejų įtakingų dabartinių prancūzų mąstytojų – Bruno Latouro ir Emanuelio Coccia – teorijas, kuriose ryškėja naujos konceptualios teorinės prieigos sprendžiant aktualiausias antropocentrines problemas. Jo pradžioje pirmiausia glaustai aptariamos esminės priežastys, keliančios grėsmę ne tik žmogaus, bet ir kitų biologinių ir gyvų organizmų rūšių išlikimui. Išryškindami šiuolaikinio kapitalizmo raidą, kurioje įsivyrauja totalaus suprekinimo veiksniai, Latouras ir Coccia pabrėžia su modernaus subjekto įsitraukimu į gamtos ir kultūros skirties terpę susijusias aktualėjančias ekologines grėsmes. Iš čia kyla dėmesys Gajos gyvybinėms simbiozės idėjoms, kurios skatina kurti naujas santykių su aplinka ir tarprūšinės individų komunikacijos formas, ryžtingai persvarstant žmonijos ir jos gyvenamos planetos ateities perspektyvas. Žvelgiant mitologizuota Gajos prasme ir mitui susilietus su filosofinės antropologijos savivoka, atsiveria naujos erdvės žmogaus kūrybinei vaizduotei, padedančiai įtvirtinti visuomenėje pozityvias vertybes ir idealus. Mitopoetinė žmogaus mąstysenos galia teikia galimybę adekvačiau suvokti sparčiai gilėjančią geologinės aplinkos krizinę situaciją ir pajungti kūrybinę vaizduotę, aktyvesnių veiklos modelių paieškai. Straipsnio autorė, remdamasi pagrindinių tyrinėjamų autorių tekstų analize, išryškina Latouro ir Coccia „Anthropos“ koncepcijų metamorfozes, kurios pagrindžia gamtoje egzistuojančią bioorganizmų tarprūšinę vienovę ir įtraukia žmogų į ekologiniu požiūriu perspektyvesnius santykius su supančio gamtos pasaulio gyvybės formų įvairove. The article focuses on the philosophical theories of Bruno Latour and Emanuele Coccia, which reveal new conceptual theoretical approaches to solving the most pressing anthropocentric problems. At the beginning, the main reasons that threaten not only human but also other biological species and their survival are first briefly discussed. By highlighting the evolution of modern capitalism, in which the planet’s oppressive factors predominate, Latour and Coccia elevate the involvement of the modern subject in a medium of natural and cultural vary. This is where their inherent focus on Gaya’s vital ideas of symbiosis emerges, which encourages the development of new forms of relationships with the environment and interspe-cies between individuals communication, considering future perspectives. Looking at the mythologized meaning of Gaya and merging the myth with the self-awareness of philosophical anthropology opens up new spaces for the creative imagination of man, which helps to establish the values of society. Mitopoietic power provides an opportunity to reflect on the crisis situation in the geological environment and to connect the imagination, to transform the creative consciousness into a social imagination in search of more active patterns of action. The article highlights the metamorphoses of Latouro and Coccia’s Anthropos, which substantiate the interspecific unity of bioorganisms in nature and involve man in his new relationship with the world. Straipsnyje plačiau aptariama viena iš populiariausių lietuvių stebuklinių pasakų veikėjų – ragana – ir kai kurie jos sąsajų su ugnimi kaip svarbiu raganiškos aplinkos atributu aspektai. Lietuvių moksliniuose tyrimuose plačiau analizuotas raganos kaip mitinės būtybės paveikslas mitologinėse sakmėse, o stebuklinių pasakų raganos vaizdinys ir sąsajos su ugnimi iki šiol nagrinėtos menkai. Lietuvių tautosakoje dažniausiai tuo pačiu raganos vardu vadinama ir lietuvių pasakų, ir mitologinių sakmių bei tikėjimų veikėja, šis įvardijimas sutinkamas ir raganavimo bylų aprašuose. Todėl tie stebuklinių pasakų tekstai, kuriuose veikia ir sakmėse minimos būtybės, gali būti artimesni mitologinei tautosakai, juose ryškūs ne tik pasakų, bet ir sakmių poetikos bruožai. Tad ir lietuvių stebuklinių pasakų ragana dažnai pasižymi ne tik tautosakinio personažo, bet ir mitinės esybės savybėmis. Straipsnyje mėginama išryškinti kai kuriuos stebuklinių pasakų raganos ir jos sąsajų su ugnimi ypatumus. Aptariama ugnis kaip raganos aplinkos žymuo; analizuojama raganos – ugnies šeimininkės – samprata ir gvildenamas ugnies kaip apsaugos nuo raganos vaizdinys. Folkloro motyvams paaiškinimo ieškoma platesniame kitų tautosakos žanrų, mitologijos ir papročių kontekste ir siekiama atskleisti tokių tautosakinių ir mitologinių ypatumų tarpusavio sąveiką. The article discusses one of the most popular characters of Lithuanian tales of magic – the witch – and fire as an important attribute of her milieu. In Lithuanian folklore studies, the image of the witch as a mythical creature in belief legends has been analysed in more detail, while the picture of the witch in folktales and her connection with the element of fire has so far been poorly researched. In Lithuanian folktales, belief legends, and belief statements as well as in witch trial reports the witch is usually referred to by the same name (ragana in Lithuanian). What is more, the tales of magic can also comprise specific imagery which is close to mythological folklore, and this way they merge the poetic features of both the folktales and the legends. Thus, the witch in Lithuanian tales of magic is not just a folklore character but can also acquire the features of a mythical being. The article attempts to highlight the peculiarities of the tales of magic with a common focus on witches and the element of fire: the fire as a marker of the witch’s environment, the concept of the witch as the mistress of fire, and the image of fire as a protection against the witch. Folklore motifs are explained in the broader framework of other folklore genres, mythology, and customs. The functions of witch and fire in tales of magic enable us to better understand not only the direct empirical but also the mythical contexts reconstructed by the researchers. At a closer look, a complex and multifaceted layer of meaning is revealed, which confirms that the witch of the magical tales is one of the most interesting and complex characters in the Lithuanian narrative folklore. The article analyzes the mythologization of Kaunas, the temporary capital of Lithuania, in the Lithuanian literature of the interwar period. The methodological approach of the research is based on the research methods of urban mythopoetics by Vladimir Toporov and that of topological semiotics by Algirdas Julien Greimas. Due to objective historical and social circumstances, the formation of the Lithuanian urban literature started only at the beginning of the 20th century. The intensive period in the urbanization of the Lithuanian literature was that of the interwar period when literary reflections on Kaunas started gaining certain dominant symbolic images of the city, repeating plots and characters typical of Kaunas. The literary myth of the temporary capital as a pernicious city which becomes a moral trial for an individual is revealed in the article through the analysis of Part III of the novel Altorių šešėly [In the shadows of altars] by Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, the most prominent Lithuanian novelist of the interwar period.

The article discusses the world tree as reflected in the Old Icelandic collection of poems the Poetic Edda and in Lithuanian folk songs. The author investigates the poetic diction of the selected sources of traditional oral poetry to disclose their symbolic meaning and connection to myth. The analysis focuses on the poetic manifestations of the world tree as a model of the cosmos and as an evergreen tree of life. The selected Eddic poems and Lithuanian folk songs reveal the significance of the world tree as a structural marker, which defines the relationship of the centre vs. periphery, i.e., the known (organised) vs. the unknown (chaotic) space. The emphasis on the tree’s upward orientation is viewed as an implication of its sacred status. The life-giving characteristics of the world tree are explored in relation to the image of dew, which symbolises the fertility and fecundity of nature in the Poetic Edda and the health and fertility of the bride in Lithuanian folk songs. Straipsnyje lyginami Amerikos lietuvių sociologo Vytauto Kavolio ir Frankfurto mokyklos atstovo Herberto Marcuseʼės požiūriai į Prometėjo, Narcizo ir Šėtono mitus. Įrodinėjama, kad šie požiūriai plėtojami radikaliai priešingomis kryptimis. Jei Marcuseʼi Prometėjas yra žmogaus pavergimo ir išnaudojimo, kuriuos sąlygoja šiuolaikinio gamybinio aparato plėtra, simbolis, tai Kavoliui – užuojautos įkvėpto maišto prieš aukščiausiąją valdžią įsikūnijimas. Frankfurto mokyklos atstovui Narcizas simbolizuoja žmogaus nesusitaikymą (maištą) su šiuolaikinio gamybinio aparato reikalavimais ir tolimoje ateityje įvyksiantį nusikratymą šių reikalavimų ir visiškai laisvos ir nerepresyvios visuomenės susikūrimą. O, žvelgiant iš Kavolio požiūrio taško, markuziškas Narcizas yra ne kas kita kaip užsimaskavęs Šėtonas. Jis, kaip ir Šėtonas, maištauja ne užjausdamas kitus, bet vardan savęs ir savo nepatenkintų emocinių poreikių. Be to, straipsnyje aiškinamasi, kokios priežastys lėmė minėtus požiūrių skirtumus. In the paper, Lithuanian American sociologist’s Vytautas Kavolis’ approach to the myths of Prometheus, Narcissus and Satan is compared with the one of Herbert Marcuse, a member of the Frankfurt school. It is argued that both authors develop their approaches in diametrically opposite directions. If Marcuse treats Prometheus as a symbol of enslavement and exploitation of man caused by development of the modern industrial apparatus, then Kavolis perceives this mythological figure as an embodiment of the rebellion against supreme authority, inspired by compassion. In the eyes of the member of the Frankfurt school, Narcissus is a symbol of man’s non-reconciliation (rebellion) with the demands of the modern production apparatus, the overcoming of these demands in the distant future and the creation of a completely free and non-repressive society. Meanwhile, from Kavolis’ point of view, the Marcusian Narcissus is nothing but a disguised Satan. He, like Satan, rebels not out of compassion for others, but for his own sake and because of his unmet emotional needs. The paper deals with the question, what reasons conditioned the differences in the interpretations of the myths, too. Šiame straipsnyje analizuojama lietuvių liaudies žaidimo užrištomis akimis varianto, vadinamo "Lauminėjimas", gyvoji rekonstrukcija, vykusi Lietuvos liaudies buities muziejuje (toliau – LLBM). Ji nagrinėjama kaip performatyvus vyksmas. Žaidimas sukuria situaciją, kai judant didžiuliame ir kompleksiniame eksponate – gyvenamajame name – ir būnant apsuptiems smulkių eksponatų, netikėtai susiduriama su autentiškais eksponatais kaip etnografine visuma; randasi individualūs dalyvių potyriai daugybiniu būdu pažinti tamsųjį Kalėdų laikotarpį išankstinių bei įgytų žinių muziejuje kontekste per muziejininkų koduojamus simbolius. The research into a live reconstruction of Blind Man’s Buff, a version of the traditional Lithuanian folk game Lauminėjimas, enabled the Open-Air Museum of Lithuania to be perceived as a place for imagining ‘authentic’ magic that offers plenty of unusual objects, words, symbols and actions, and associates game repetition with ritual. Through iterations, the playful situation by the museum staff became an effective teaching tool to reversibly draw children into the world of ethnographic authenticity, where time divides into two parallels, the past in the present, submerging participants in a time scale in order to perceive authenticity at the opposite pole, the present time; and the generated cyclicality. This offers participants an authentic experience related to the perception, acquisition and consolidation of knowledge. It became obvious that manifestations of the authenticity of a game and the surrounding ethnographic environment can be perceived or expressed only in active interaction with a person. Some lie in the conceptual aspect of reconstructing the process; others lie in the visual setting of objects as witnesses of the past. Using unique material from the museum’s archives, and being acquainted with various ethnographic descriptions of the game in the educational programme, the museum staff encoded the eye band in adjacent-parallel meanings, lending it an expression of multiple symbols: the darkness of long winter evenings, mystified and mysterious time, and the metaphor of a laumė (a Lithuanian mythical creature associated with the dark environment of rural dwellings when there was no electricity). All this was linked to the educational programme’s previous experiences or stories used to express these phenomena at Christmas time: entering a dark dwelling, observing the lighting of a candle, candle-star symbolism, and the mystical mystery felt throughout the programme. Thus, the museum staff conceptually connected the game to the Christmas season through encoded symbols. A specific meaning occurs in a specific context. It means that a blindfold during the game Lauminėjimas is not directly perceived as a headscarf or a piece of fabric used to wrap food or small things. On the contrary, in a cultural process which generates symbols, the game becomes a bridge connecting not the physical but the metaphysical aspects of knowledge, perception, active involvement and experience, which is very necessary for the younger generation, in order to develop a critical understanding of Lithuanian ethnic culture, which, as is validated in the context of the research, reveals itself fully in a performative act through authentic experience. The result also shows that children have plenty of space to discover, connect and interpret unique insights through their experiences during the game, thus creating their own personal authentic experiences. When some children, lauminėtojai, experience a sense of darkness, others experience completely different things; that is, in trying to escape the catcher and hiding in the room, they encounter authentic exhibits, such as 19th and 20th-century household items, and various pieces of furniture. When interviewed, children from different groups emphasised minds and ideas connected to old times, paying attention to household items and the setting. All the groups highlighted the different things that stuck in their memory. For example, some mentioned the rare ethnographic name of the game, which they had never heard before. Nowadays, it is known to them as a game that is also played blindfolded, Akla višta (literally Blind Hen). Meanwhile, others noticed some elements from the surrounding extraordinary environment: large apples on the Christmas tree as unusual baubles. Furthermore, in both groups, the lauminėtojai emphasised the sense of darkness. The children’s visual and performative familiarity with objects-exhibits as witnesses of the past brought them closer to new authentic experiences. From an observer’s point of view, no other part of the programme could so disperse children in slow motion throughout the room of a dwelling (a large and complex exhibit) like the game Lauminėjimas for cognitive purposes. The feedback from participants shows that a museum is a place where many ways of getting to know each other can take place, by applying multi-layered criteria: a) emphasising different aspects in setting the ethnographic environment (for example, small apples on a small Christmas tree, and big apples on a big tree), thus creating different links between objects and phenomena; b) applying different interpretations of the same phenomenon or object, which allows us to create new meanings and introduce new perceptions; (c) the participation of participants from different backgrounds, which builds contrasting understandings of the learning environment; and d) the interaction between participants, the participants and the environment, and the participants and Father Christmas at a given moment, thus creating unique and authentic experiences. Straipsnyje keliama mintis, kad dr. Jono Basanavičiaus sukurtą ir visą gyvenimą plėtotą lietuvių kilmės iš senovės trakų teoriją (hipotezę) galima traktuoti kaip mitinį lietuvių kilmės vaizdinį, kurio esminis tikslas buvo idealizuoti naujam laisvam valstybiniam gyvenimui besikeliančią tautą. Šiuo atveju svarbu, kad trakų idėjos pirmavaizdžiai atsispindi J. Basanavičiaus paliudytoje prigimtinėje patirtyje. Senovės trakus jis retrospektyviai pamini jau aprašydamas ir savo vaikystę. Taigi, šiame straipsnyje taip pat formuluojama prielaida, kad trakologija nuo J. Basanavičiaus jaunystės tampa reikšminga jo gyvenimo dalimi. J. Basanavičiui apsigyvenus Bulgarijoje ir ypač pradėjus leisti Aušrą (1883–1886) lietuvių kilmės iš senovės trakų hipotezė tapo svarbiausia jo moksline ir kartu gyvenimo idėja bei reikšmingu jo kultūrinės tapatybės sandu, turėjusiu didelę įtaką visam jo gyvenimui. Keldamas šią hipotezę J. Basanavičius atsiskleidžia kaip asmenybė, kurioje susilieja mokslininkas-antropologas, mitinio tautos kilmės vaizdinio kūrėjas ir žmogus, per šią teoriją tarsi kūręs savo asmeninę kultūrinę tapatybę. The theory (hypothesis) tracing Lithuanian origins from the ancient Thracians is perhaps the most romantical and most ideologically engaged part of the scholarly legacy by doctor Jonas Basanavičius (1851–1927). Shaped already in the period of publishing “Aušra” (1883– 1886), this theory was developed in the course of his entire life and could be regarded as the greatest reflection of Basanavičius’ romantical worldview and thinking. Having successfully performed important functions of fostering the Lithuanian national identity, awakening the national consciousness and national pride, and enhancing the national communication in the last decades of the 19th century, the “Thracology” – reasonably criticized already in the interwar period – is currently just a historiographic fact from the perspective of the modern science. Although being able to grasp certain tendencies, Basanavičius did err considerably in some of his interpretations. However, his “Thracology” was not just a scholarly study. While creating and developing his Thracian theory of Lithuanian origin, Basanavičius followed the mythological ideology tradition of the first half of the 19th century, in which the historical narrative used to start with a story of origins (according to Gintaras Beresnevičius, researcher in Lithuanian mythology). His Thracian hypothesis should be regarded as a mythical image of Lithuanian origin, which essential purpose was idealization of a nation that started a new free political life. In this context, culture and especially its continuity from the past to the present and future emerges as the main ideological value of “Thracology”. It enables appreciating people from the past and their unique culture as important participants of the national present and future. This theory supports the idea of Lithuanian adherence to the European culture. The Thracian theory is not just a scholarly study because Basanavičius viewed cultural history not only as a science that objectively examined historical facts, but also as an inherent part of the human life that could aid self-understanding and personal growth. Therefore, it is important to note that the world of ideas is clearly recognizable in the Basanavičius’ texts along with the scholarly and sensual worlds. The original forms of the Thracian theory are reflected in the earliest experiences as testified by its author. Basanavičius retrospectively mentioned Thracians already while recounting his childhood. Thus, the article supports an assumption that “Thracology” used to be an important part of Basanavičius’ life since his youth – starting from his studies at the Moscow University. After Basanavičius settled in Bulgaria, and particularly from the period of publishing “Aušra”, the Thracian hypothesis of the Lithuanian origin should be considered as the main idea of his studies and life; it strongly affected him for the rest of his life and comprised an important part of his cultural identity. In terms of this hypothesis, Basanavičius stands out as a person that merges a researcher in anthropology and creating of his own cultural identity.

Pasitelkiant lyginamąjį istorinį bei vidinės rekonstrukcijos, o taip pat tipologinį ir analitinį aprašomąjį metodus, straipsnyje analizuojama XVI a. vakarų baltų etnomitologijos šaltinio "Sūduvių knygelė" mitonimų Swayxtix ir Auschauts etimologinė raida. The earlier presented analysis of the list of theonyms of the Yatvigian book (i.e. a reconstruction of the demonological order of the mythonyms) established a new status of the bespoke scholastic work presupposing a correction of the former decision to include it in the list of written sources of authentic information which has been compared to equivalents from the Renaissance epoch. Only the elements with pejorative connotation (i.e. a contemptuous story about the primitive conception of the Yatvigian pagan faith) might have been circulated in Prussia and cited in other official Church documents (primarily, in Agenda Ecclesiastica). Thus the motive for compiling the Yatvigian Book (further – YB) cannot be associated with the creation of the works with epistemological and narrative essence, or with the visitation reports. YB is likely to be a legal document which was used to prepare new sanctions against Yatvigian people. On the basis of the presented factographic motifs of the daily life of the Yatvigians and the visiting circumstances of Sambia Peninsula or Samland (i.e. entrance restrictions to the territory of amber mining where this West Baltic tribe used to live), one can draw a cautious conclusion that the preparation of YB is to be related to the influence and activities of the bishop of Sambia Georg vonn Polentz. This high-ranking clergyman must have ordered the work and provided the author of the YB with the necessary material. To summarize the outcomes of the research into the West Baltic (Yatvigian) mythonyms Swayxtix and Auschauts, the following conclusions are proposed: 1. Ethnographic materials of the YB are to be related with (1.a.) the data recorded in the old documents from the archive of the Teutonic Order; and (1.b.) reports from “the masters of amber” (i.e. EHG. bornsteynhern); 2. Mythonym Ytv. Swayxtix A(p) ‘der Gott des Lichtes, i.e., the god of the Great Star / Venus (= Medieval Lat. Lucifer)’ is to be ascribed to the type of pseudotheonyms – 2a. the primary, or substrate, astronym Ytv. *Zvaigzdi(/ī)kas *‘stellar / satellite of the star ↔ outrunner of the Morning Star deity ↔ Servitor resp. Mercury’ should be reconstructed; 2b. n. qualitatis Ytv. *Zvaigzdi(/ī)kas originated from sub. Pruss. (/ Ytv.) *zvaigzdē ‘light of the star ↔ star’ + suff. Pruss. (Ytv.) *-i(/ī)k-; 3. The origin of the sememe Ytv. Auschauts ‘der Gott der Gebrechen Kranken vnd Sunden / a god of birth defects, invalids and sinfulness’; A(p) is to be explicated using the phenomenon of antonomasia, i.e., ‘illness / designation of the malady’ → ‘the god who cures the disease’; 4. The 2nd denotation of the mythonym Auschauts ‘den grossen gütigen Gott / (acc. sg.) noble, righteous god’ implies twofold reflection of the semantic modulation – the healing function of the Roman god Aesculāpius was contaminated with the motives of the apotropaic rite described in the Old Testament; 5. Mythonym Ytv. Auschauts and sub. Pruss. auschaudīsnan ‘trust’ (acc. sg.), adj. Pruss. auschaudīwings ‘trusted’, sub. Pruss. auschautenīkamans ‘debtors’ (dat. pl.), sub. Pruss. auschautins ‘debts’ (acc. pl.) are to be attributed to modified Germanisms, cf. EHG. aussatz ‘leprosy’, EHG. aussetzen ‘to inculpate someone living with leprosy; to except a witness; to put credit, to give somebody the benefit of the doubt; to lend, to loan etc.’. Contamination of different Germanic and West Baltic semantic alternants caused innovative morphological structure of these forms; 6. Ytv. Auschauts is a feigned mythonym created using data of the Antiquity, a work De Borvssiae Antiqvitatibvs by E. Stella and Old Testament motifs.

Straipsnyje svarstysime mitologinę sąmonę, trumpai apžvelgsime jau žinomas studijas ir teorijas, kurios, aiškindamos mitologiją siauru moksliniu pagrindu, supainioja skirtingus patirties klodus. Tokie aiškinimai tampa problemiški, mat šios teorijos remiasi nepagrįstomis modernybės mąstymo prielaidomis, dėl kurių mitologija netenka savasties ir tampa „įrankiškos” sąmonės objektu. Pirmiausia mitologija nubloškiama į pasakų karalystę, tuomet ji atskiriama nuo gyvybingos plotmės, o galiausiai ir pats gyvybingumas redukuojamas į subjektyvų žmogaus pasaulį. Dėl to mitologinė patirtis ne tik netenka savo pagrindo, bet ir praranda visuotinumą. Nėra abejonės, jog mitologijos ir gyvybingo pasaulio klodai yra glaudžiai susiję. Tačiau, atskleidžiant jų specifines savybes, o ypač jų skirtingas laiko-erdvės bei judesio sampratas, svarbu šiuos klodus analizuoti atskirai. Parodysime, jog šių dviejų pasaulio klodų – gyvybingumo ir mitologijos – integracija yra vienpusė. Pirmasis, gyvybingumo, polius yra grindžiantis, antrasis, mitologinis, integruoja visa, kas gyvybinga, ir apima visą kosmą. Pamatysime, jog gyvybingumo samprata susijusi ne tik su vitaliniais santykiais, bet ir su moderniąja valios metafizika, kurioje, anot visų modernybės ir postmodernybės tekstų, viską lemia jėga. Atverdami garso fenomenologijos problematiką parodysime, kad tiriant mitologinę kalbą, tenka atskirai tyrinėti garso klodą, kuris daugumos mitologijos tyrinėtojų buvo pražiūrėtas. We discuss mythological consciousness in this paper. We briefly review the already well-known studies and theories that interpret mythology in a narrow scientific approach and therefore confuse different layers of experience. These theories are problematic. They are based on unconsidered assumptions of contemporary thinking that reject mythology as such and transforms it into the object of "instrumental" consciousness. First, mythology is thrown into the fairy-tale kingdom, then it is separated from its viable dimension, and ultimately, its vitality is reduced to the subjective world of man. As a result, mythological experience not only loses its foundation but also loses universality. There is no doubt that the layers of mythology and the living world are closely linked. To reveal their specific properties, and especially their different concepts of timespace and motion, one must analyze these layers individually. We will show that the integration of these two worlds - vitality and mythology - is one-sided. The polarity of vitality is the fundamental and the polarity of the mythological is second covers the entire cosmos and integrates everything that is viable. We will see that the concept of vitality relates not only to vital relationships but also on the modern metaphysics of will, in which, according to all the texts of modernity and postmodernity, everything is determined by force. By opening up the issue of sound phenomenology, we will show that in exploring the mythological language, we should study the sound layer separately, and that was unnoticed in the studies of most of mythologists.

To summarize the outcomes of the research into mythologemes, recorded in the Yatvigian Book, as well as into other genetic IE mythonimic alternants, the following principal statements are to be formulated: (1) the list of theonyms of YB presupposes a reconstruction of the demonological order of the mythonyms; (2) YB should not be regarded as a material of the Episcopal inspection (therefore, it should not be related with Agenda Ecclesiastica or its authors) or an odd frag' ment of a more extensive source written adhering to the stylistics of the Renais' sance, but as an example of a juristic document; (3) YB cannot be characterized as an authentic source of the religious practices and beliefs of Western Balts.

Data recorded in written sources from the 15th to the 17th century show that roosters / chickens were sacrificed much more abundantly and more often than other animals. Apparently, this is why the range of goals is very wide: from the yield of an individual crop (for example, cereals) or ensuring the abundance of animals of a certain breed to the success and prosperity of the whole farm; from the request to protect man to the desire to atone for the wrath of all the gods. In any case, the goals of the sacrifice almost always correlate with the functions of the deity to whom the sacrifice is made (the sphere of protection). Why roosters / chickens are sacrificed most often compared to other animals, for different gods and with different intentions, can only be guessed at. One of the reasons is that roosters and chickens are popular in the farming community, abundantly bred birds that grow relatively fast and do not require large resources and care. Another possible reason is that most of the descriptions of sacrifices were recorded after baptism, when less communal rituals were performed. For community rituals (whole village or several villages) larger animals (bull, goat, pig) were usually chosen. When sacrificing in a small family circle, a rooster / chicken sacrifice was quite sufficient, which was often consumed by the participants themselves. The analysis of the 15th-17th-century data on rooster and chicken sacrifices recorded in written sources shows that no clearer difference was found between the bird (rooster or chicken) chosen for the sacrifice and the addressee, purpose, method and place of sacrifice.

Remiantis XV–XVIII a. rašytiniais šaltiniais, vaidilučiai, ikikrikščioniškosios religijos kulto tarnų funkcijų perėmėjai, atliko įvairias pareigas, tarp jų – terapinę veiklą. Šaltinių aprašuose nurodoma, kad suteikiamos terapinės pagalbos pobūdis skyrėsi pagal vaidilučių atliekamą maginę praktiką. Vaidilučių gydomoji veikla nėra sistemingai tyrinėta. Šiame straipsnyje analizuojami duomenys apie skirtingų vaidilučių grupių terapinę veiklą XV–XVIII a. rašytiniuose šaltiniuose ir nustatomos šios veiklos refleksijos XIX–XXI a. liaudies medicinoje, remiantis archyviniais ir autorės gydomųjų tikėjimų užrašymais. Tyrimas padeda atsekti liaudies medicinos terapinių metodų prasmę ir kilmę, galimą tradicijų raidą. Priests-vaidilučiai should be regarded as successors to the practitioners of the pre-Christian religion. According to 15th to 18th-century written sources, priests-vaidilučiai performed various duties, including medical duties. The nature of the therapeutic assistance they provided varied according to the magic activity they performed. The aim of the article is to analyse data on the therapeutic activities of priestvaidilučiai in 15th to 18th-century written sources, and to identify traces of these activities in 19th to 21st-century folk medicine, based on archival records and the author’s healing records. The subject of the investigation is data about the therapeutic activities of vaidilučiai found in 15th to 18th-century literary sources. The study uses comparative, analytical and interpretive methods. The historical-comparative method is used to compare the mythical material of historical sources written at different times (the 15th to the 18th century). The recorded mythical information is also compared to archival (19th to 21st-century) data and the author’s (2010 to 2019) data. The application of this method reveals the transformation of mythical material in the context of historical change. In the study, we rely on Greimas’ insight that ‘in the methodological plane, every recorded fact must be viewed as an integral part of the wider whole into which it is included. Each mythical object or episode must be a pretext for developing a hypothetical model that can explain not only that object or episode, but also other related phenomena.’ The research helps us to trace the meaning and origin of some therapeutic methods of folk medicine, and the possible development of traditions. In 15th to early 18th-century written sources, information on priests-vaidilučiai as healers and spreaders of healing knowledge is fragmentary. Records made by Simon Grunau (1529), Lucas David (1583), Jacobus Lavinski (1583) and Matthaeus Praetorius (late 17th century) reveal that vaidilučiai were healers to whom people turned for advice and help in the event of illness, and they (healers) helped with advice, therapeutic procedures and treatment. The nature of the therapeutic assistance provided by priest-vaidilučiai varied according to their magic activities. According to 15th to early 18th-century written sources, priests-kraujučiai are ancient Prussian medics who were able to stop bleeding from wounds and excessive bleeding. They used incantations in therapeutic practice. Possibly 19th to 21st-century formulas for the treatment of bleeding in a non-Christian context reflect old Prussian and Lithuanian incantations. In 15th to 18th-century written records, herbalists are not linked to medicine, but are classified as fortune-tellers who used herbs. There are no direct indications that herbalists treated or taught herbal remedies. But it is likely that herbalists treated and disseminated knowledge on herbal medicine. This is evidenced by data that the ancient Balts knew the healing properties of some herbs, and how to collect and use them. In the 19th to the 21st century, the tradition of collecting plants for healing before/at Midsummer was preserved, and numerous herbal recipes were also recorded. erbal recipes were also recorded. In 15th to 18th-century written sources, priests-pustoniai, who healed wounds by blowing, are mentioned. They used incantations during therapy. The described actions of pustoniai relate to the verbal and gestural performance of incantations recorded by folklorists in the 19th to the 21st century. The 19th to 21st century technique used by charmers and pustoniai is the same: when you recite an incantation, you cannot breathe; it is necessary to hold the breath; when the formula is said, it is necessary to blow on the patient (specifically on the diseased area), or on the object being charmed. In 15th to 18th-century written sources, charmers are mentioned who ‘charm all sorts of diseases, such as toothache tumours and blood diseases’. Charmers are not referred to as vaidilučiai, although they may have been able, in accordance with their duties, to ‘charm animal diseases’ or ‘help people with incantations’. Based on 15th to early 18th-century written sources, some simple formulae for everyday needs were passed to ordinary people. This is evidenced by the 20th century prevailing use/knowledge of several different levels of medical magic. In the 19th to the 21st centuries, ethnologists and folklorists wrote numerous incantations, knowledge about the performance of incantations, and awareness of charmers in many parts of Lithuania. Although influenced by Christianity, by the mixing of nations (migration), and by changes in linguistic expression, the knowledge of ancient Prussian and Lithuanian medicine (medicinal substances, treatment formulas and techniques) is reflected in 19th to 21st-century folk medicine.

Straipsnio objektas – keli latvių mitologinėse dainose apie Saulės dukros vestuves plėtojami mitiniai motyvai: Saulė arba jos dukra verkdamos renka šakas, našlaitė pina iš jų vainikėlį. Keliamas tikslas aptarti šių dainų fragmentų sąsajas su Perkūno nutrenkto medžio (ąžuolo arba obels) motyvu, atskleisti jų tautosakinę simboliką, palyginti jų interpretacijas mokslininkų iškeltose teorijose. Darbe taikomi teksto analizės ir lyginamasis metodai. Atliekama variantuose pasitaikančių skirtingų vaizdinių analizė. Siekiant atskleisti jų simbolines reikšmes ir galimą motyvų kilmę, ieškoma paralelių ir gretinama su kitomis latvių mitologinėmis, vestuvinėmis, našlaičių dainomis bei tikėjimais, taip pat pasitelkiamas vienas kitas pavyzdys ir iš lietuvių tautosakos. Daugiau dėmesio skiriama tautosakiniam kontekstui, į kurį nepakankamai atsižvelgė ankstesni tyrinėtojai. Kritiškai vertinamas atskirų motyvų sąryšis su siužetu, atsižvelgiant į galimo dainų jungimo ir kontaminavimo procesus, dėl kurių randasi vaizdinių reikšmių sanklota ir jos tampa sunkiau išaiškinamos. Atliktastyrimas leidžia teigti, kad dainose Perkūno nutrenkto ąžuolo auksines šakas paprastai trejus metus renka Saulė, šio fragmento sąsaja su Perkūno nutrenkto medžio motyvu stabili. Vėlyvesniuose variantuose reikšmių santykis kiek kinta, dažniau pradedama minėti „obelis“, „trys dienos“, tačiau reikėtų papildomai įvertinti per spaudą ir kitais būdais plitusių variantų įtaką. Dalies tyrinėtojų bandymai šį mitinį Saulės atliekamą darbą prilyginti vienų arba ketverių metų periodui išlieka menkai pagrįstomis teorinėmis spekuliacijomis. Tolesnės siužeto variacijos, kuriose iš surinktų auksinių šakų jauna mergina (našlaitė) arba Saulės dukra pina sau vainikėlį, rodo kitų dainų įtaką, šis motyvas kontrastuoja su ankstesniu dainos siužetu. Latvian mythological songs on the Sun daughter’s wedding or the love relationships and quarrels between the divine celestial beings are characterized by considerable diversity and variety of motives, and frequently by the textual fragmentation as well. In the longer songs, the motive of the tree struck down by Perkūnas stands out as the central and the least varying one, attracting perhaps the most of the scholarly attention. The mythical circumstances of the tree-striking act by Perkūnas and its motivation and consequences are not completely clear; however, the area for interpretation is widened by the subsequent elaboration of the story line towards the end of the songs. This article focuses on the group of folksongs in which the Sun (in some variants – the Sun’s daughter, an orphan) sheds her tears while picking the golden boughs of the tree in the course of three (in some variants – five) years. Mythological songs representing this story line comprise the types LD 34047 and LD 33802 in the collection by Krišjānis Barons. Throughout the 20th century, numerous additional variants including the motives in question were recorded and stored at the Archives of the Latvian Folklore (LFK). The song lines describing the “wilted leaves” that the Sun’s daughter is picking can be found in the folksong published by Liudvikas Rėza both in Lithuanian and in German (RzD 62). Employing the textual and comparative analysis, the author of this article discusses the interrelationship between individual fragments (like the tree struck by Perkūnas, the golden boughs picked by the Sun, and the wreath making), or their possibly dissimilar origins, aiming at revealing their folklore symbolism and comparing various interpretations of this story line in different scholarly approaches. The results of the analysis suggest that according to folksongs, the golden boughs of the oak struck down by Perkūnas are most commonly picked by the Sun in the course of three years. The connection between this fragment and the motive of the tree struck down by Perkūnas is stable enough, while its conservation in the songs could be determined by the popular Latvian folksong symbolic of the broken or frosted tree that signifies female hardships. In the subsequent variants recorded after the Barons’ collection, the semantic distribution is somewhat different: the “apple tree” and “three days” are more frequently encountered. Certain attempts by various researchers at equating this mythical task performed by the Sun to some definite calendar period of one to four years remain debatable and poorly grounded hypotheses. The time formulas including the number “three” are usually employed in Latvian folksongs to indicate an outstanding, prolonged activity or the hardships encountered along the way. The subsequent variations of the story line describing the wreath that is made from the collected golden boughs by a young girl (an orphan) or the Sun’s daughter testify to the influence of other folksongs, as this motive stands in contrast to the previous story line of the song.

Teofanija – dievybės pasirodymas, apsireiškimo pasauliui aktas. Akmens ir dendromorfinės teofanijos yra buvusios akistatos (dievų apsilankymo ar veiklos) pėdsakai. Todėl teofanija galima bet kada arba bent jau įmanoma tam tikru metu, pvz., ištikus negandai ar ligai. Teofanijos vietos yra lankomos tikintis pasveikti ar išsaugoti sveikatą, atliekamos terapinės procedūros, ritualiniai veiksmai. Šiame straipsnyje analizuojami duomenys apie akmens ir dendromorfines teofanijas XV– XVIII a. rašytiniuose šaltiniuose ir nustatomos šių teofanijų refleksijos XIX–XXI a. liaudies medicinos terapiniuose metoduose, remiantis archyviniais ir autorės gydomųjų tikėjimų užrašymais. Theophany is the manifestation of a deity, an act of revelation to the world. Traces of theophany (a visit or activity of the gods) are left in stone and dendromorphic features. Therefore, theophany is possible at any time, or at least at some point, for example, in the event of an accident or illness. Sites of theophany are visited in the hope of recovering or preserving health, to carry out therapeutic procedures, or perform ritual actions. This paper analyses data on stone and dendromorphic theophany in 15th to 18th-century written sources, and identifies reflections of it in 19th to 21stcentury therapeutic methods of folk medicine, on the basis of archival records and the author’s records of healing beliefs.

Straipsnio tikslas – nagrinėti lietuviškumą reprezentuojančius vaizdinius, kuriuos pirmame nelegaliame lietuviškame laikraštyje Aušra1 (1883–1886) iškėlė publikacijų autoriai, jų kultūrines prasmes ir ryšį su to meto moksliniais kontekstais. Straipsnis atskleidžia, kad praeitis, kaip ir kalba, ir daba (kultūra) yra Aušros autorių pasiūlyti lietuviškumą išreiškiantys teminiai laukai ir lietuviškumo vaizdinių kultūriniai ištekliai, dalyvaujantys kuriant lietuvių pasakojimą ,,apie save”. Jie įprasminami skirtingai. Tačiau XIX a. protodisciplininis ir konceptualus kalbotyros, istorijos ir etnologijos bei antropologijos integralumas suponuoja jų vidines sąsajas. Straipsnyje taip pat keliama mintis, kad miško ir piliakalnio vaizdinių prasmių gilumoje glūdi socialinės kultūrinės evoliucijos idėja ir kultūros kaip dinamiško reiškinio samprata. The article analyses cultural meanings of images of Lithuanianness, as represented in the publications of the first illegal Lithuanian newspaper Aušra (published 1883 to 1886), and their relation to scientific contexts. The past and language and daba (culture) are considered as thematic fields and sources of images that participate in creating the Lithuanians’ story of ‘themselves’. Their instrumental capacities are different, although the 19thcentury proto-disciplinary integrity of linguistics, history, ethnology and anthropology justifies their implicit interconnectedness. The article also suggests that images of forest and hill-fort encompass the idea of social and cultural evolution, and the understanding of culture as being dynamic.

When collecting information for the archaeological map of the Kaunas Province (prepared and published in 1899), the attention of the then researchers was attracted by two most famous stones of the Pakruojis land: Devil's Armchair in Titoniai and a stone with a footprint, called Holy, in Zigmantiškiai. Around 1908-1913, the Peleniškiai Hillfort was surveyed and the stone with a bowl at its foot was measured by Liudvikas Kšivickis. In the 20s to 30s of the 20th century, the State Archaeological Commission paid attention to some more sacred places: stones with bowls in Binėnai and Pašvitinys, the sacred hill in Paežeriai, etc. Teacher of English Juozas Šliavas who started work in Žeimelis in 1949 had never heard about that. In 1958, he founded a schoolchildren's folklore club and became its leader, and in 1959, a school museum was established on his initiative. The year 1966 marked a turning point in the folklore research activity of teacher Šliavas, related to the beginning of the wide-scale land reclamation and destruction of individual farms. Assisted by archaeologist Adolfas Tautavičius, linguist Aleksandras Vanagas, ethnographer Vacys Milius, and folklorist Norbertas Vėlius, Šliavas became a distinguished expert of Žiemgala (Semigallia): a researcher on Northern Lithuania and Southern Latvia, a connoisseur of their history and culture. It should be noted that he became actively involved in the search of the heritage treasures and took care of their preservation: before 1975, he had already visited and described all the archaeological and mythological sites in the Akmenė, Joniškis, Pakruojis, Panevėžys, Pasvalys, and Radviliškis districts. On 1 January 1975, Jonas Treškevičius (b. 1952) took up the post of the monument protection specialist of the Pakruojis district; he became a loyal assistant to Juozas Šliavas and independently discovered a number of sacred places, and primarily stones with bowls. Valentina Alekseriūnaitė (b. 1951), Juozas Čybas (1928-2004), Bronius Pupinis (1909-1992), and Algimantas Senulis (b. 1937) also contributed substantially to the monument preservation. An expedition led by the author of the present book worked intermittently in the Pakruojis district from 26 January 2017 to 17 August 2018. Over 18 days, 163 destinations sites were visited by cars, and 333 sites were described in the Code of Sacred Places, including hills, fields, groves, trees, stones, and springs related to the Baltic religion and mythology;1 moreover, the publication includes additions to the Code of the Joniškis District Sacred Places prepared in 2015-2016. The Code of the Pakruojis District Sacred Places includes: forests and groves (23), individual trees (15), hills (33), fields and meadows (11), swamps (29), streams (4), river parts (7), springs (24), non-processed boulders (40), and stones with bowls (154) that account for almost half of all the entries in the Code. Most of the villages in the Pakruojis District boast three, four, or even five stones with bowls. The villages following one another on the left bank of the Mūša River have especially many stones with bowls: three stones in Miciūnai, five in Sosdvaris, three in Pociūnai, and six in Kalevai. The stones were discovered and usually kept at the door of the house, in place of the stairs to the granary, in flower beds, at the arbours, or were frequently bricked into the foundations or masonry walls. For the first time, evidence was found that stones with bowls could be kept in a cooking room of the house at the floor level. It should be noted that the bowls of the stones in the Pakruojis district did not have the form of a regular circle at the top, they were rather of an oval shape; the bowls were usually moved from the centre towards the edge, and the stones were frequently rough-hewn. However, from now on, it is necessary to take a critical view of the classification of the stones with bowls in accordance with their form and the hypothesis of the stones possessing marks of hewing as having been intended for the corner of the house. The latest accumulated information leads to considering hewing to be a consequence of the later adjustment of sacred stones to various uses: stones with straight sides were usually put and to and aligned with other stones in the foundations and walls, the threshold of the house, the granary wall, etc. True, such a conclusion does not exclude the possibility that in a new place - the villages established in the second half of the 16th century -stones with bowls were still appreciated and respected, rites were performed at them, and even sacrifices were offered. The period (and most likely the previous one as well) is characterised by the association of those stones with grass snakes which represented the ancient Lithuanian deities of home (Dievai Pagirniai) known from written sources. It should be separately mentioned that a typical characteristic of the Pakruojis district is sacred forests and groves called Ąžuolyne [an oak wood] (11 sites), sacred oaks (12 trees), and hills called Bobkalnis [women's hill] (6 sites); moreover, valuable information was obtained about four stones with cup-marks: those sites in Northern Lithuania date back to the 1st millennium ВС. The same areas also stayed inhabited later and, in the 1st to the 4th century AD, they boasted barrows with stone circles. [...]

Užtat šventykla irgi nuo senų senovės prilyginama žmogaus kūnui, ir žmogaus kūnas – šventyklai. Toliau tiek pastatas (namas, juolab šventykla), tiek žmogaus kūnas prilyginami visatai, pasauliui, žmogaus kūnas dargi – piliai, miestui ir, kaip neseniai turėjome progą įsitikinti2, kūnas, pastatas, pasaulis prilyginami drabužiui. Pakeliui išryškėja šių skirtingo lygmens žmogaus sielos „namų“ tarpusavio homologijos: jie daugeliu atveju atitinka ir netgi atstoja vienas kitą tradicinėse pažiūrose, tikėjimuose, papročiuose. Skirtingų tradicijų duomenys šiose homologijose papildo vieni kitus ir sklandžiai sugula į vientisą paveikslą, taip eilinį sykį išryškindami lyginamųjų tyrimų svarbą. Tik tokiame vientisame paveiksle, iškilusiame susumavus skirtingų tradicijų pavyzdžius, savo tikrąją vietą randa ir tikrąją reikšmę atskleidžia baltiškieji duomenys. Straipsnyje analizuojamas ritualinis juokas baltams priskiriamuose XVI–XVII a. rašytiniuose šaltiniuose bei to juoko refleksijos XIX–XX a. kalendoriniuose ir šeimos papročiuose, tautosakoje. It can be argued that ritual laughter has neither beginning nor end. It is a closed circle that accompanies human life from birth to death and rebirth; from laughter in this world to fun in another. The latter idea is well illustrated by the Tyrolean proverb: Heaven’s door opens only to those who know how to smile. Data from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in written sources (albeit fragmentary) show that Lithuanians and Prussians are familiar with ritual laughter, which is an integral part of the sacrifice to the ancient gods. The purpose of ritual laughter is to make the gods merry (especially the gods and goddesses of agriculture). With the establishment of Christianity at the end of the 17th century, ritual laughter becomes an important part of calendar, family and other customs, recorded in folklore and phraseology.

Vilniaus Šv. Eufrosinijos stačiatikių kapinėse besiilsinčio žandaro, literato ir mitologo Vasilijaus von Rothkircho (Василий Алексеевич фон Роткирх vel Wilhelm Reinold von Rothkirch, 1818 vel 1819–1891) asmenybė iki šiol žadina tyrėjų smalsumą. Istorikės Redos Griškaitės straipsnyje dar kartą grįžtama prie teatro svarbos šio vyro gyvensenai ir laikysenai. Pirmą kartą spausdinamas ir vizualinis von Rothkircho portretas. The personality of Vasily von Rothkirch (Василий Алексеевич фон Роткирх, vel Wilhelm Reinold von Rothkirch, 1818 vel 1819–1891), a gendarme, literary figure and mythologist, now resting the Orthodox Cemetery of St Euphrosyne in Vilnius, still arouses interest among researchers. In her article, the historian Reda Griškaitė returns to the importance of theatre in this man’s life and views. It is also the first time a photograph of von Rothkirch, from the Russian National Library in St Petersburg, is published.

Pagrindinis šio straipsnio tikslas yra palyginti ir susieti M.K. Čiurlionio unikalų asmeninį požiūrį į paukščio ir medžio simboliką su meno artefaktų vaizdavimu pasaulio turtingiausiose meno tradicijose. Tyrimai rodo ne tik menininko kūrybinės vaizduotės universalumą, bet ir daugybę tiek vietinių, tiek ir užsienio, įkvėpimo šaltinių. Tarpkultūrinių mainų ir estetinio grįžtamojo ryšio klausimas nusprendžia, kokia tyrimo metodika bus taikoma ir ar ji gali būti komparatyvistinė. Viena vertus, ši problema lygina skirtingas medijas, kurios identišką prasmę perteikia kaip savo specifinį modalumą, nesvarbu, ar tai būtų scenos menas, poezija, ar išraiškinga vaizduojamojo meno medžiaga. Kita vertus, tai sugretina tolimas kultūras ir civilizacijas, todėl atstumo sąvoką reikėtų gvildenti papildomai. Atstumas žymi tūkstančius mylių erdvėje, bet laike - tik sekundės dalį, tuo būdu neišskiriant daugumos žmonių, kurie visur reaguoja į tokį patį vaizdo turinį - kuklų bet galingą paukščio ir medžio vaizdinį. Pasirinkti tyrimo metodai apima nuo lyginamosios estetikos iki semiotikos ir muzikologijos, neišvengiamai siejasi su kultūrine antropologija ir religijos studijomis, tuo leidžiant sutvirtinti savo pradinio tyrimo poziciją, teigiančią, kad estetinė patirtis dažniau eina išvien su sakraline ir dieviškąja, o ne nuo jos nukrypsta. Jos abi tampa neatsiejamos kaip judėjimas uždarame rate. Siekiant išsamiau atsakyti į straipsnio problemą, ateityje prireiks atlikti papildomus tyrimus. The main objective of this article is to link and compare M.K. Čiurlionis’s uniquely personal approach to symbols of bird and tree with instances of the objet d'art that derive from the richest traditions of the art world. This research points not only to the universality of the artist’s creative imagination but traces the plethora of his or her inspirational sources as well, both the local and the foreign ones. The issue of cross-cultural exchange and aesthetic loop-back decides what research methodology is applied and whether it can be fully comparative. On the one hand, it collates the different media that convey identical meaning within their specific modalities, whether it is performing arts, poetry or expressive material of fine arts. On the other hand, it juxtaposes distant cultures and civilisations. Therefore, the notion of distance asks for further elucidation. It signifies the remoteness of thousands of miles in space but simultaneously being only a fraction of a second in time, hardly distinguishing the majority of people who react to the same image content that denotes both humble and powerful phenomena of a bird and a tree respectively. My research methods range from comparative aesthetics to semiology and musicology inevitably allied with cultural anthropology and religious studies to advocate the stand of my initial research that aesthetic experience more often goes together with the experience of the sacred and than it departs away. They seem to be inseparable like in the continuous loop. An emergent follow up research may require addressing both issues.

Straipsnyje dėmesys telkiamas į Birutę ir jos vardu vadinamą kalną Palangoje. Glaustai apibendrinęs archeologinius ir istorinius duomenis autorius tęsia 2012 m. prof. Vytauto Ališausko pradėtus Birutės - menamos gyvulių vislumo deivės - tyrinėjimus ir, remdamasis tautosakiniais šaltiniais bei palyginamąja medžiaga, parodo, kad šios deivės globoje buvo ne tik gyvulių, bet ir moterų vaisingumo pradas, manytina, taip pat gimtis. Straipsnyje pirmą kartą skelbiamas Birutės kalnais vadinamų Lietuvos vietų žemėlapis leidžia spėti, kad tokio ar panašaus, iki šiol plačiau nežinomo senovės kulto būta daugelyje Žemaitijos ir Aukštaitijos vietovių. Sugrįžus prie 1983 m. Palangos Birutės kalne atrastos šventvietės astronominės interpretacijos, kurios autorius prof. On 29-30 of May 2019, the University of Klaipėda hosted a symposium of researchers from the countries around the Baltic Sea. The theme: spirit of a place - genius loci. He encouraged the return to research of Birutė’s Hill in Palanga. This is one of the most famous places in Lithuania, which was particularly significant at the end of the 19th-early 20th c., as the Lithuanian nation was forming. Stories about it are part of the identity of our parent’s and grandparent’s generation. To this day, in the public mind Birutė is imagined as a priestess (vaidilutė), who had dedicated her life to the gods, yet later became the Duchess of Lithuania. In 2012, culturologist Vytautas Ališauskas called Birutė a goddess, who cared for the fertility of animals. In this article, this conclusion is adjusted: Birute is a goddess from the Baltic religion, an expression and protector of any origin of fertility, possibly even birth itself (this meaning is coded in her name "Birutė

Šiame straipsnyje toliau nagrinėjama „Vertimo studijų“ 11 numeryje autorės paskelbtame straipsnyje „Raganos ir burtininkai lietuvių mitologinėse sakmėse ir jų atitikmenys rusų ir anglų kalbose“ pristatyta mitologinių tekstų vertimo problematika, pateikiant dar vienos mitologinių būtybių grupės – laumių – lyginamąją vartosenos lietuvių, anglų ir rusų kalbose bei kultūrose analizę. Viso tyrimo teorinės prielaidos ir pagrindinės sąvokos, tokios kaip realijos, svetiminimo ir savinimo strategijos, jų taikymas vertime, lietuvių, keltų bei slavų mitologijų sąveika ir lyginimo objekto pasirinkimas, aptarti pirmajame straipsnyje, o šiame pristatoma surinkta ir susisteminta medžiaga apie laumes, pateikti galimi vertimo ar aiškinimo papildomuose komentaruose variantai. Turėdami tokią informaciją vertėjai gali geriau suprasti konkrečių mitologinių personažų panašumus bei skirtumus ir parinkti tinkamiausius lietuviškose mitologinėse sakmėse sutinkamų būtybių kultūrinius atitikmenis. This article aims to find cultural equivalents for the Lithuanian mythological creature laumė in the English and Russian languages. Therefore, a comparative analysis of similar mythological creatures in Lithuanian, Russian and English languages and cultures was carried out. The results of the analysis have shown which names of these creatures might be considered cultural equivalents. Such information is useful not only when choosing a domestication strategy, but for a foreignization strategy as well because these equivalents can be used both in the translation text itself and in additional extratextual comments. The conclusions given at the end of this article may be of practical importance for translators or authors writing about Lithuanian mythology and folklore for English or Russian speaking readers.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama Lietuvos etnologijoje mažai tyrinėta svarbi Pietryčių Lietuvos lenkų etninių tradicijų palaikymui ir tapatumo formavimui tema, lenkų etnokonfesiniai simboliai XX a. pabaigoje - XXI a. pradžioje. Dauguma tyrimui pasirinktų simbolių yra susiję su įvairiomis liaudiško religingumo formomis ir praktikomis. Nagrinėjamas vestuvinis nuotakos vainikėlis ir jo pynimui naudojamos žaliavos klausimai, Vilniaus krašto simboliu tapę dirbtinės Vilniaus verbos, velykiniai apeiginiai patiekalai ir Žolinės puokščių komponavimo specifiškumas. Tyrimų metu nustatyta, kad didesnis lenkų nei kitų greta gyvenančių etninių grupių religingumo laipsnis, kartu su etnokonfesiniais simboliais yra svarbus Pietryčių Lietuvos lenkų tapatybę formuojantis veiksnys. Based on the fieldwork data and published sources, the article addresses the ethno-confessional Polish symbols in southeast Lithuania at the end of the 20th - the beginning of the 21st century. The article also discusses the influence of the symbol on the development of the ethno-confessional identity of Poles in southeast Lithuania. The analysis of a bridal cornet in wedding customs and ceremonies shows that in southeast Lithuania the traditions of using the symbol in Polish weddings are intertwined with the customs characteristic of other regions of Lithuania and the neighbouring countries. Making a cornet from myrtle sprays is a prevailing and marked trend at Polish wedding in southeast Lithuania. Lithuanians use rues for making a cornet. A symbolic meaning is attached to the cornet in a wedding ceremony and during a wedding party. Apart from the symbolic meaning certain magic and curative qualities are attached to the sanctified cornet. It is concluded that distinguished traditions of using material for making a Polish wedding cornet in southeast Lithuania are developing. Therefore through this symbol it is sought to highlight the ethno-cultural distinction of the population of southeast Lithuania during a wedding. Among various types of "verba" (palm) Vilnius "verba" is an exceptional one. This type of "verba" is made from dry plants and is a product of folk art; however, it becomes a religious symbol on Palm Sunday as it used to be in the context of its origin. The "Vilnius verba" first appeared in the middle of 19th century in the environs of Vilnius. Originally these "verba" were associated with Polish religious and folk culture of southeast Lithuania. In the second half of 20th century Vilnius verba were already are strongly linked to Lithuanian and Polish folk and religious cultures of the Vilnius region. In Poland and partially in Belarus this symbol emphasised the Polish identity. Thus, at the beginning of the 21st century Vilnius verba is a unique symbol of Lithuanian and Polish folk religion, folk culture and ethnic identity. The analysis of Easter dishes and their symbolism begins with the dishes that contain dairy products. Poles also have specific ritual dishes made of dairy products, a cottage cheese cake known as Paskha being the most important among them. This ritual dish of Lithuanian Poles has a direct link with the Slavic Easter culture. Also, according to the data of fieldwork, a homemade cake - "Kulich" - is more often found among the Poles in Lithuania who reside on the border with Belarus. "Kulich" is linked to the cake of the same type, known as "Boba", which used to be and is still made in Lithuania. Poles also have several examples of festive pork dishes typical of them. Apart from usual smoked ham prepared in a variety of ways, Lithuanian Poles used to smoke or roast a pig on this occasion as a symbol of the ethno confessional identity of Poles in southeast Lithuania. Deeply rooted in the church practice, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has retained its liturgical part encompassing the tradition of consecrating the greenery. The majority of urban residents do not make bunches by themselves; they buy them outside the church. The Polish tradition of consecrating greenery supplemented with fruit and vegetables is considered exceptional. The believers regard 15 August as a religious feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with its own liturgy and symbols. The majority of residents of southeast Lithuania treat the consecration of a bunch of greenery in performing church rituals as a festive symbol derived from the context of folk piety. Thus, the present article specifies that using the ethno confessional symbols the Poles of southeast Lithuania seek to highlight the ethnic identity of the population of that part of Lithuania.

Archajiniame lietuvių folklore, kur žmogus dar gyvena atvirame, šiltais giminystės ryšiais alsuojančiame pasaulyje, daug dėmesio skiriama pirmapradiškumui, nuoširdžiam susiderinimui su gyvenamuoju pasauliu, laiko patikrintai patirčiai ir senolių išminčiai. Senosiose lietuviškose dainose itin puoselėjamos iš kartos į kartą perduodamos tradicijos. Žmogaus savastis čia pirmiausia formuojama intymiame šeimos kontekste, kuris visada buvo pilnas dainų ir pasakojimų, sujungiančių skirtingus gyvenamojo pasaulio ir laiko matmenis. Reikšmingi čia ne tik gyvieji, bet ir mirusieji. Ypač svarbus kitoks laiko suvokimas: archajiškoje lietuvių tradicijoje pabrėžiama, kad bendruomenės vertybės slypi praeityje, o ne ateityje kaip šiuolaikiniame progreso varomame pasaulyje. Archajiškas žmogus, skirtingai nei šiuolaikinis, jaučia gyvenąs prasmingai ne todėl, kad įsigijo naujausią technologinį blizgutį, o todėl, kad yra įsišaknijęs savo gimtinėje, priklauso savo giminei, suvokia savo prigimtį. Simboliškai plėtojami mitiniai giminystės saitai, įprasmina žmogaus ryšius su gyvenamuoju pasauliu. Žmogus gyvena šių kokybiškai turiningų simbolinių ryšių tvarkoje, kuri sutelkia bendruomenę tam tikru būdu kurti ir įprasminti savo būtį kolektyviai. Lietuvių dainuojamojoje tautosakoje šie ryšiai išreiškia savitą laikyseną pasižyminčią ypatinga ekologine pusiausvyra ir gyvenamojo pasaulio darna. Tokia laikysena grindžia prasmingus kultūrinius pagrindus, kurie ir šiandien gali būti plėtojami kaip kokybiškai pilnavertė kultūrinė nuostata, gebanti įrodyti savo pranašumą, tvirtumą ir pagrįstumą.

Kai kurie mūsų iškilūs kalbininkai veiksmažodžio (su)tvėrti kosmogoninę reikšmę laikė esant svetima, perimta iš slavų, todėl neteiktina. Anksčiau jau buvo mėginta ją apginti ir pagrįsti reikšme "daryti tirštą, tvirtą", pasitelkiant tam baltų ir lyginamąją daugelio kitų tradicijų medžiagą. Dabar parodoma, kad ir pati buitiškiausia ir bene todėl "teiktiniausia" šio veiksmažodžio reikšmė "tverti tvorą" tradicijoje nesunkiai įgauna kosmogoninių sąsajų, todėl gali būti laikoma kosmogoninės reikšmės šaltiniu bei pagrindu. Tam pasitelkiami daugelio tradicijų, tarp jų baltų, duomenys apie pilių, piliakalnių, šventyklų kosmologinę simboliką. Some outstanding Lithuanian linguists had rejected the cosmogonic meaning for the verb "(su)tverti" and eliminated it from usage, apparently hastily and untenably. It has already been shown previously that the cosmogonic meaning derives smoothly from the meaning "coagulate, consolidate, harden" of the same verb. This time, the aim is to demonstrate the liability of the meaning "fence (in, off), pale", the main and most everyday one of "(su)tverti", to acquire the cosmogonic sense. On the one hand, as Mircea Eliade has put it: "The founding of a new town repeats the creation of the world", and on the other, "once the spot has been confirmed by ritual, a square or circular enclosure is put round it with four gates corresponding to the four points of the compass". Thus, fencing in the town amounts to the creation of the new social world, i.e. the cosmogony on the social level. We are to keep in mind, certainly, the usual denomination of the town by "fence, enclosure", as in English town (cf. German Zaun "fence"), Russian gorod, grad "town, citadel, city" (cf. ograda “enclosure”) etc. Respective Baltic linguistic, folklore, and archaeological data are presented in the article to prove the thesis of legitimacy of the cosmogonic meaning for the verb "(su)tverti" on the grounds of "fence (in, off), pale".

Poeto ir dailininko Antano Martinaičio (1939–1986) kūrybinis žvilgsnis visada krypo ten, kur dvasia. Pasak literatūrologės Ilmos Mazrimienės, menas jam buvo humanistinės mitologijos kūrimo plotmė, t. y. siekimas visumos, neprieštaraujančios vienio idėjai. Kiekvienas ištartas šio menininko žodis poezijoje ir teptuko po tėpis drobėje – tai dieviškumo generavimo savyje perteikimas, dvasinei šviesai atskleisti pasitelkiant tamsos metaforas, ironiją, vaikystės, mito, pasakos atminimą. The work of the poet and artist Antanas Martinaitis (1939– 1986) always leaned towards matters of the soul. According to the literature researcher Ilma Mazrimienė, to him, art was a plane for the creation of humanistic mythology, a search for unity that does not go against the concept of singularity. Every word of poetry and every brushstroke by this artist conveys his internal divinity, revealing a spiritual light, by metaphors of darkness, ir ony and memories of childhood, myth and fairy tale.

Straipsnyje atkuriamas dangiškųjų vestuvių mitas baltų tradicijoje. Remiamasi baltų religijos ir mitologijos rašytiniais šaltiniais, lietuvių ir latvių dainuojamuoju bei sakytiniu folkloru, kalbos duomenimis. Dangiškųjų vestuvių mitas galėjo būti žinomas dar indoeuropiečiams. Tai įrodo mito liekanos ne tik baltų, bet ir senovės indų, slavų tradicijose. Tiesa, šio mito motyvai aptinkami ir kitokios kilmės senosiose kultūrose. Išlikusiuose baltų dangiškųjų vestuvių mito fragmentuose kalbama apie Saulės ir Mėnulio vedybas, jų tarpusavio santykius ir Mėnulio neištikimybę įsimylėjus Aušrinę / Vakarinę (Venerą) žvaigždę. Mitas galėjo atspindėti danguje stebėtus dangaus šviesulių kaitos reiškinius - Mėnulio perėjimą iš pilnaties į delčią, o galbūt ir periodiškai dangaus skliaute vykstantį Mėnulio priartėjimą prie Veneros. Baltų dangiškųjų vestuvių mitas gana gerai išsilaikė, tad sutelkti reliktai įgalina rekonstruoti jo siužetą. The imagery of the Moon as a husband or father and of the Sun as his wife or a mother are deeply entrenched in the mythic worldview of the Balts. This article, on the basis of Latvian and Lithuanian folkloric narrative, plays out the story of the Moon’s unfaithfulness. In the morning and the evening, when the Sun rises and sets, the Evening Star/Venus appears in the sky, and the Moon sees this star in the heavens and falls in love. Lithuanian and Latvian folklore talks about the two marriages of the Moon: one to the Sun and the other to the Evening Star (Venus). The second marriage takes place when the Moon betrays his first wife by falling for her daughter. For his unfaithfulness, the Moon is punished. His judge and punisher can either be Perkūnas/Pėrkons or the Sun, who either cut in half or chop up the unfaithful husband. Those who study this myth associate the chopping up of the Moon with its phases - the transition from the full moon to the waning moon. The close relationship of the Moon and Evening Star in the plot of the "celestial wedding" can also be linked to an astronomical phenomenon - the periodical moments when the Moon and Venus come closer to one another. The myth of the celestial wedding could have existed in the Indo-European proto-nation’s culture. Remnants of this myth exist not only in the tradition of the Balts, but also in the Ancient Indian Rig-Veda, as well as in the oral culture of the Western and Southern Slavs.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama religijos ir mitologijos teminių grupių germanų kalbų kilmės leksika semantikos ir kilmės aspektais. Skoliniai suskirstyti į septynis pogrupius: bažnyčios pastatų ir jų dalių, administracijos, aplinkos; bažnyčios vidaus įrangos, vietų joje; apeigų reikmenų, bažnyčios daiktų; švenčių, apeigų; bažnytinės veiklos, knygų, muzikos instrumentų; asmenų pavadinimai; mitologinė leksika, antgamtinių būtybių pavadinimai. Nustatytas germanizmo pamatinis žodis, iš kurio jis kilo, nurodoma skolinio pirminė kilmė. Duodama kitų kalbų atitikmenų. Šalia pateikiamas leksemų fiksavimas raštijoje nuo XVI a. ir vartojimas gyvojoje kalboje, tarmėse. Aptariama skolinių chronologija. Išaiškinta, kad lietuvių olà vartojamas ne tik reikšme ‘žvėrelių ar paukščių urvas, landa’, kaip pateikiama LKŽe, bet Bretkūno Biblijoje jis užfiksuotas dar reikšme ‘patalpa (laidoti), kripta’. Apibūdinami iš germanizmų sudaryti dariniai. The article addresses the religious and mythological vocabulary of Germanic origin from the perspective of semantics and origin. Loanwords are divided into seven sub-groups:church buildings and their parts, administration, environment; church interior, places inside it; objects used in rituals, church items; festivals, rituals; church activities, books, musical instruments; names of persons; mythological vocabulary, names of supernatural beings. The base word of the Germanism from which it derived is established; the primary origin of the loanword is identified. Equivalents in other languages are presented. The recording of lexemes in the written language dating from the 16th century and their usage in the spoken language and dialects are also provided. The chronology of loanwords is discussed. It was found that Lithuanian olà is not only used in the meaning of ‘a cave, burrow of animals or birds’ as defined in the Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language but also as ‘a chamber (for burial), crypt’ according to Bretkūnas’ Bible. The formations deriving from Germanisms are described as well.

Išspausdintų ir teatro mėgėjų statytų dramos veikalų indėlis XX a. pirmaisiais dešimtmečiais kuriant herojiškos Lietuvos praeities naratyvą, kuriame į sceną išeina istorinės asmenybės - Mindaugas, Gediminas, Kęstutis, literatūrinės herojės Pajauta, Mirga, Živilė, mitologijos ir legendų personažai - Eglė, „Palociaus ežero dugne" veikėjai, - nevienareikšmis. Nors tai buvo galimybė įvaizdinti istorinę ir legendinę praeitį, tačiau objektyvios priežastys dažnai neleido to tinkamai padaryti dėl pačių veikalų dramaturginio neišbaigtumo, jų besiimančių teatro mėgėjų profesionalumo stygiaus, taip pat ir dėl nevienodo lietuviškų scenos kūrinių žiūrovų pasirengimo estetiškai suvokti teatro meną. Vis dėlto būtent teatre dažniausiai imtasi didingos Lietuvos istorijos temų, kurių apraiškos kitoje besiformuojančioje vizualinės kultūros srityje - dailėje - buvo gerokai menkesnės.

Šiame straipsnyje aptarta mitologinių tekstų vertimo problematika, trumpai apžvelgta lietuvių, keltų ir slavų mitologijų sąveika bei atlikta lyginamoji pasirinktos mitologinių būtybių grupės lietuvių, anglų ir rusų kalbose bei kultūrose analizė. Surinkta ir susisteminta medžiaga apie jas bei pateikti galimi vertimo ar aiškinimo papildomuose komentaruose variantai leidžia vertėjui geriau suprasti konkrečių mitologinių personažų panašumus bei skirtumus ir parinkti tinkamus lietuviškose mitologinėse sakmėse sutinkamų būtybių kultūrinius atitikmenis. This article aims to find cultural equivalents for a group of Lithuanian mythological creatures, namely, magical people, including wizards, witches, sorcerers, etc. in English and Russian languages. Therefore, first, different sources of folkloric translation and its specific issues were consulted, which created the possibility for discussion of some cultural aspects as well as links between Lithuanian, Slavic and Celtic folklore. Second, a comparative analysis of the named mythological creatures in Lithuanian, Russian and English languages and cultures was carried out. The results of the analysis have shown which names of these creatures might be considered exact cultural equivalents and which of them are only partial analogs. Such information is useful not only when choosing a domestication strategy, but for a foreignization strategy as well because these equivalents can be used both in the translation text itself and in additional extratextual comments. The conclusions given at the end of this article and the provided table, where specific translation suggestions are given, may be of practical importance for translators or authors writing about Lithuanian mythology and folklore for English or Russian speaking readers.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjami tradiciniai (tautosakiniai, mitologiniai) paukščių vaizdiniai Kristijono Donelaičio Metuose, esmiškai pirmojoje dalyje „Pavasario linksmybės“. Straipsnį sudaro trys skyriai: pirmajame aptariamos Metų 1.107–108 ir 142–144 eilutės, kur minimas tautosakinis lakštingalos pamėgdžiojimas; antrajame – 1.111–114 ir 127–130 eilutės (atsižvelgiant ir į 1.80–84 bei 98–104 eilutes), kur lakštingala palyginama su žvirbliu, o giedančiai lakštingalai prilyginamas Dievą garbinantis būras (Krizas); pagaliau trečiajame – 1.155–201 eilutėse Donelaičio aprašomi „paukščių karaliaus“ rinkimai. Visos šios temos yra tautosakinės, o dvi pastarosios turi ir tiesioginių sąsajų su mitologija. The article deals with the traditional (folkloric, mythological) images of birds in Kristijonas Donelaitis’ "The Seasons", mainly in the first part, "Spring Joys". The article consists of three sections: the first deals with lines 1.107–108 and 142–144 of The Seasons, which refer to the folkloric imitation of nightingales; second – lines 1.111–114 and 127–130 (taking into account 1.80–84 and 98–104), where the nightingale is compared to sparrows, while the singing nightingale is an equivalent to the "būrai" (Krizas) worshiping God; third – lines 1.155–201, where Donelaitis describes the election of the "bird king". All of these topics are folkloric, and the latter two have direct links with mythology.

Algirdo Juliaus Greimo mokslinis ir intelektualinis palikimas iki šiol ne visas žinomas mokslininkams, juo labiau visuomenei. Nors praėjusiais metais buvo paskelbta daug Greimo rankraščių, jo laiškų (Sverdiolas 2017), tačiau vis dar aptinkama medžiagos, teikiančios naujų žinių apie mokslinę jo „virtuvę“. Šis straipsnis skirtas mitologijos tyrimų palikimui, tiksliau sakant, vienai jo daliai – mitologijos šaltinių išrašams. Juos Greimas vadino kortelėmis ir 1987 m. siuntė Broniui Savukynui kaip tekstų būsimam mitologijos žodynui pavyzdžius (Savukynas 2002: 81). Vėliau į Vilniaus universitetą su Greimo rankraščiais atkeliavo daugiau kortelių, tik jau ne su rašiniais, o su šaltinių išrašais (Greimas 2005: 750). Po semiotiko mirties stalčiuose liko nemažai mitologijos tyrimų medžiagos, iš kurios Kęstutis Nastopka paskelbė net keturias nebaigtas mitologijos apybraižas, pluoštelį enciklopedinio pobūdžio straipsnių apie lietuvių dievus (Greimas 2005: 618−637). The author suggests that many aspects of the legacy of Greimas is still unknown to scholars as well as general audience as new and new material in his archives is being found.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas Simono Daukanto ne sykį kartojamas teiginys pasaulio kūrėją esant Perkūną, kuris dėl to pavadinamas Perūnu, nes pasaulį jis savo šiluma išperėjęs. Pirmiausia pristatomas atitinkamas mitinis kontekstas - vaizdiniai, kad 1) pasaulį iš tikrųjų yra sukūręs Perkūnas ir 2) tai jis yra padaręs savo ugnimi, karščiu ar šiluma, kad 3) pasaulis gali būti suvokiamas kaip kiaušinis arba iš kiaušinio išsiritęs, ir galiausiai, kad 4) Perkūnas išties yra susijęs su kiaušinių perėjimu - jis užperi paukščių kiaušinius. Šis mitinis kontekstas Daukantui ir bus suteikęs semantinį pagrindą Perkūno, juolab Perūno, vardą susieti su veiksmažodžiu perėti. Griežtai lingvistinei sąsajai to, žinoma, nepakanka, nors nėra ji ir visai neįmanoma. Aptariamas ir Daukanto Perūno santykis su slavų Perunu. Originali asmenvardžių rašyba pateikiama straipsnio gale. The article examines the statement, often expressed by Simonas Daukantas, that the'creator of the world in Lithuanian mythology was "Perkūnas", the thunder god. The author called this deity "Perūnas", because with his warmth he laid the world like an egg, in Lith. expressed by the word perėti. First, the relevant mythical context is presented - imagery that 1) the world was really created by "Perkūnas" and 2) that he created it through his fire, heat, or warmth; that 3) the world can be seen as an egg or as having hatched from an egg and, finally, that 4) "Perkūnas" is truly linked to the laying of eggs - he hatches bird eggs. This mythical context gave Daukantas the semantic basis to associate the name "Perkūnas", and especially "Perūnas", with the verb perėti (to hatch). For a strict linguistic association this is, of course, insufficient, although not entirely impossible. The link of Daukantas’ "Perūnas" to the Slavic Perun is also discussed.

Naują Gebserio fenomenologinę prieigą daugelis mokslininkų pastebėjo būtent dėl to, kad ji išlaisvino juos nuo ribotų mokslinių metodikų suvaržytų „ subjekto-objekto“, „savasties-pasaulio“, „aukšto-žemo“, „priežasties-pasekmės“ ir kitais dualumais. Gebseris teigia, kad tokias dualistines metodikas grindžia trijų dimensijų erdvė ir linijinis laikas, kurie ir sudaro pagrindinę šiuolaikinių Vakarų, kuriuos jis vadina intelektuali- racionalia civilizacija, morfologiją. Straipsnyje atkreipiamas dėmesys į tai, kas dažnai pamirštama, o būtent, kad tyrinėjimai neretai remiasi pagrindais ir teiginiais, kurių kilmės pats tyrėjas iki galo nereflektuoja. Kitaip tariant, tyrėjas nepastebi, kad jo teoriniai ir metodologiniai pagrindai glūdi pačioje intelektualios-racionalios civilizacijos morfologijoje. O tai, žinoma, reiškia, kad jo pagrindai yra per siauri. Straipsnyje keliama svarbi užduotis – pagrįsti metodą, kuris apimtų daugybę sričių ir žmogiškosios patirties aspektų, netaikant jiems empirinės ir idealistinės minties mokyklų praktikuojam redukcionizmo. Gebser’s implicit phenomenological method has been found fruitful by many scholars, because it has released them from a limited “scientific methodology” founded on dichotomies of “subject-object,” “self-world,” “high-low,” “cause-effect,” and so on. This kind of dualistic methodology, Gebser indicates, is based on a consciousness of three-dimensional space and linear time, which constitute the basic morphology of what he has called the Mental-rational Civilization1, that is, contemporary Western. A consideration which is often neglected is that in many instances the researcher’s language includes dimensions and claims which he does not recognize as arising from his own theoretical and methodological foundations2, in the Mental-rational civilization. This implies, of course, that his foundations are too narrow. The paper addresses an important task, – to institute a method which can deal with a multitude of areas and dimensions of human experience without subjecting them to reductionism, such as is practiced both by empirical and idealistic schools of thought.
