[ES] El interés por los libros estéticos ha aumentado en los últimos tiempos: libro-arte, fotolibro, álbum ilustrado, libro tipográfico, etc. El objetivo del artículo no es su clasificación, sino investigar los elementos que pueden fundamentar una teoría del libro estético desde el marco de referencia del libro, no de la obra de arte (como suele ocurrir en estudios sobre libro-arte / libro de artista). La metodología utilizada es interdisciplinar: incluye estética, semiótica y la perspectiva historiográfica, en especial de arte y diseño gráfico. La importancia de lo visual, su consideración discursiva y la facilidad actual para la edición impresa favorecen los proyectos de libros estéticos. Estos también se fundamentan en contextos con vocación interdisciplinar como el actual, así como en el uso de recursos visuales y discursivos variados, confluencias entre diferentes formas de comunicación o el encuentro entre ¿alta cultura¿ y ¿cultura popular¿. Una cuestión central es la relación entre lo estético y lo artístico, con la dificultad de ubicar publicaciones que tienen en principio una orientación referencial, pero a las que se concede una apreciación, e incluso intención, estéticas. Un hecho que interroga además por el límite entre los objetos artísticos y los que tienen una función práctica. [EN] Interest in aesthetic books has increased in recent years: art books, photo books, illustrated albums, typography books, etc. The objective of this paper is not to classify aesthetic books but to explore the elements that could support a theory on aesthetic books that takes the book as the frame of reference, rather than the work of art (as tends to be the case in studies of artist/art books). The methodology used is interdisciplinary, including aesthetics, semiotics, and a historiographical perspective, particularly on art and graphic design. The importance of the visual, its discursive dimension and the current accessibility of print publishing facilitate the development of aesthetic book projects. Such projects are also established in contexts with an interdisciplinary focus like the contemporary context, using a variety of visual and discursive techniques, bringing together different forms of communication, and connecting ¿highbrow culture¿ with ¿popular culture¿. A key question for this study is the relationship between the aesthetic and the artistic, with the difficulty of classifying publications that have in principle a referential orientation, but which are recognized as having an aesthetic dimension, and even an aesthetic intention. Also explored in this study is the distinction between works of art and objects that serve a practical function.

[ES] Con un tema monográfico tan sugerente, como actual, se dibujan las primeras formas ilustradas de este número 2 de EME magazine. El pattern, estampado o patrón de repetición, es un motivo ornamental con suficiente arraigo en las artes decorativas tradicionales como para sugerir muchas de nuestras páginas, pero además resulta innegable su éxito en el diseño o la ilustración actuales.
