A new cathode material, FeS2-decorated carbon nanofiber (CNF), is proposed for Li-S batteries. The structure and physicochemical properties of the material have been engineered to enhance the poor cycling stability typically displayed by sulfur composites. The composite material shows a complex architecture with a matrix of CNF hosting the sulfur and core-shell FeS2 nanoparticles acting as a catalyst for a solid phase conversion-type reaction. This cathode delivers high discharge capacities of 864, 798, 689, 595 and 455 mAhg−1 at C/10, C/5, C/2, 1C and 2C, respectively, with a stable capacity retention of 87% at 2C after 300 cycles. FeS2-decorated CNF has been characterised using several techniques, including in-situ battery measurements at the ALBA synchrotron facility and high-throughput microscopy, giving valuable insights into its charge/discharge reaction mechanism. The excellent performance obtained is combined with the use of just low-cost and abundant elements such as iron, sulfur and carbon, which makes this battery highly promising for the next generation of electrochemical energy storage devices.

Polyanion‐type phosphate materials, such as M₃V₂(PO₄)₃ (M = Li/Na/K), are promising as insertion‐type negative electrodes for monovalent‐ion batteries including Li/Na/K‐ion batteries (lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), and potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs)) with fast charging/discharging and distinct redox peaks. However, it remains a great challenge to understand the reaction mechanism of materials upon monovalent‐ion insertion. Here, triclinic Mg₃V₄(PO₄)₆/carbon composite (MgVP/C) with high thermal stability is synthesized via ball‐milling and carbon‐thermal reduction method and applied as a pseudocapacitive negative electrode in LIBs, SIBs, and PIBs. In operando and ex situ studies demonstrate the guest ion‐dependent reaction mechanisms of MgVP/C upon monovalent‐ion storage due to different sizes. MgVP/C undergoes an indirect conversion reaction to form Mg⁰, V⁰, and Li₃PO₄ in LIBs, while in SIBs/PIBs the material only experiences a solid solution with the reduction of V³⁺ to V²⁺. Moreover, in LIBs, MgVP/C delivers initial lithiation/delithiation capacities of 961/607 mAh g⁻¹ (30/19 Li⁺ ions) for the first cycle, despite its low initial Coulombic efficiency, fast capacity decay for the first 200 cycles, and limited reversible insertion/deinsertion of 2 Na⁺/K⁺ ions in SIBs/PIBs. This work reveals a new pseudocapacitive material and provides an advanced understanding of polyanion phosphate negative material for monovalent‐ion batteries with guest ion‐dependent energy storage mechanisms.

The generation of methane fuel using surplus renewable energy with CO as the carbon source enables both the decarbonization and substitution of fossil fuel feedstocks. However, high temperatures are usually required for the efficient activation of CO. Here we present a solid catalyst synthesized using a mild, green hydrothermal synthesis that involves interstitial carbon doped into ruthenium oxide, which enables the stabilization of Ru cations in a low oxidation state and a ruthenium oxycarbonate phase to form. The catalyst shows an activity and selectivity for the conversion of CO into methane at lower temperatures than those of conventional catalysts, with an excellent long-term stability. Furthermore, this catalyst is able to operate under intermittent power supply conditions, which couples very well with electricity production systems based on renewable energies. The structure of the catalyst and the nature of the ruthenium species were acutely characterized by combining advanced imaging and spectroscopic tools at the macro and atomic scales, which highlighted the low-oxidation-state Ru sites (Ru, 0 < n < 4) as responsible for the high catalytic activity. This catalyst suggests alternative perspectives for materials design using interstitial dopants.

The evaluation of the flexibility in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) has been very useful to understand their performance in gas adsorption and separation applications. Here, we have evaluated the adsorption properties of a nanoporous mixed-linker ZIF-62 using a combination of gas adsorption measurements, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction under operando conditions. While adsorption studies in nanoporous ZIF-62 at 77 K and atmospheric pressure predict a large O2/N2 separation ability, computational studies anticipate that the observed differences must be attributed to kinetic restrictions of N2 to access the internal porosity at cryogenic temperatures. Interestingly, upon a small increase in the adsorption temperature (90 K vs 77 K), both N2 and O2 are able to access the inner porous structure through the promotion of a phase transition (ca. 3.8% volume expansion) upon gas adsorption. This narrow phase (np) to expanded phase (ep) structural transition in ZIF-62 is completely suppressed above 150 K. Based on the excellent molecular sieve properties of nanoporous ZIF-62 for O2/N2 at cryogenic temperatures, we extended our study to the adsorption of linear and branched hydrocarbons. This study predicts the preferential adsorption of alkanes over alkenes in ZIF-62 for small hydrocarbons (C2), while in the case of C3 hydrocarbons and above, the adsorption process is mainly defined by kinetic restrictions.

Porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) capable of storing a relatively high amount of dry methane (CH4) in the adsorbed phase are largely explored; however, solid CH4 storage in confined pores of MOFs in the form of hydrates is yet to be discovered. Here we report a rational approach to form CH4 hydrates by taking advantage of the optimal pore confinement in relatively narrow cavities of hydrolytically stable MOFs. Unprecedentedly, we were able to isolate methane hydrate (MH) nanocrystals with an sI structure encapsulated inside MOF pores with an optimal cavity dimension. It was found that confined nanocrystals require cavities slightly larger than the unit cell crystal size of MHs (1.2 nm), as exemplified in the experimental case study performed on Cr-soc-MOF-1 vs smaller cavities of Y-shp-MOF-5. Under these conditions, the excess amount of methane stored in the pores of Cr-soc-MOF-1 in the form of MH was found to be ≈50% larger than the corresponding dry adsorbed amount at 10 MPa. More importantly, the pressure gradient driving the CH4 storage/delivery process could be drastically reduced compared to the conventional CH4-adsorbed phase storage on the dry Cr-soc-MOF-1 (≤3 MPa vs 10 MPa).

Freezing/melting behavior of water confined in the nanopores of activated carbon materials has been evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at different water loadings, and after the application of an external stimulus. Under atmospheric pressure conditions, the DSC scans show a depression in the freezing/melting point of confined water compared to the bulk system. Interestingly, water confined in narrow micropores (pores below 0.7 nm) does not exhibit any phase transition, i.e. it is non-freezable water. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data confirm the presence of a distorted molecular assembly in narrow micropores, whereas synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data (SXRPD) demonstrate the non-freezable nature of the water confined in these narrow-constrictions. Similar experiments under high-pressure CH4 give rise to a completely different scenario. Under high-pressure conditions methane hydrates are formed with a water-to-hydrate yield of 100% for the under-saturated and saturated samples, i.e. in the presence of an external stimulus even water in narrow micropores is prone to experience a liquid-to-solid phase transition. These results confirm the beneficial role of carbon as a host structure to promote nucleation and growth of methane hydrates with faster kinetics and a higher yield compared to the bulk system and to other porous materials.

A high-surface area activated carbon material (PPAC) prepared from a petroleum residue has been used as a host structure to promote the nucleation and growth of confined methane hydrates after the incorporation of additives. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Leucine and Tetrahydrofuran (THF) have been evaluated either dissolved in the pre-impregnation media (ultrapure water) or incorporated in the carbon surface using a mechanochemical approach. High-pressure methane adsorption isotherms show that the mechanochemical approach does not improve the storage performance of the original carbon material due to the steric effects by the bulkier organic functionalities. Furthermore, the incorporation of the additives shifts the nucleation in narrow pores to higher pressures. On the contrary, when the additives are dissolved in water, high-pressure methane isotherms anticipate a modification in the kinetics and/or thermodynamics of the nucleation process. Whereas gas hydrates grown in large pores and/or the external surface exhibits a significant reduction in the induction time, the nucleation process in narrow micropores becomes more uniform and occurs in a narrower pressure window, slightly shifted to higher pressures. However, no changes in the total uptake at 10 MPa could be found. The situation is different when THF is dissolved in water. In this case, the nucleation takes place at pressures below the natural process (<3–4 MPa), the total amount of methane stored at 10 MPa being slightly limited. In-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies anticipate a sI structure for the pure water methane hydrates, while a combination of sI and sII is identified for the THF-based system.
