- Abstract
Information is powerful; it can influence peoples' views and, in turn, their behavior. Much recent research and discussion on the role information plays in view change has focused on filter bubbles, echo chambers and misinformation and how they might influence what people think and how they act. However, no prior work has focused specifically on understanding the human information behavior (HIB) that drives and facilitates view change. We report findings from interviews with 18 people who recently changed views on issues they considered important. We found a tight symbiotic relationship between HIB and view change; passive information encountering sparked change, often spurring follow-up active seeking and verification which progressed the change to a “point of no return,” supported making the change and reinforced the decision to change. When shared, information that contributed to the change sometimes sparked changes in others (as did expressing or debating the change), serving as an information encounter that perpetuated a cycle of HIB and view change. This understanding of the integral role of HIB in view change can inform policy and systems design to promote view change autonomy and a broader research agenda of understanding HIB to support democratic principles and values.

- Abstract
There has been considerable hype about filter bubbles and echo chambers influencing the views of information consumers. The fear is that these technologies are undermining democracy by swaying opinion and creating an uninformed, polarised populace. The literature in this space is mostly techno-centric, addressing the impact of technology. In contrast, our work is the first research in the information interaction field to examine changing viewpoints from a human-centric perspective. It provides a new understanding of view change and how we might support informed, autonomous view change behaviour. We interviewed 18 participants about a self-identified change of view, and the information touchpoints they engaged with along the way. In this paper we present the information types and sources that informed changes of viewpoint, and the ways in which our participants interacted with that information. We describe our findings in the context of the techno-centric literature and suggest principles for designing digital information environments that support user autonomy and reflection in viewpoint formation.

- Abstract
In a ubiquitous computing scenario, characterized by pervasive technologies, tourists can get assistance from mobile technologies in planning their trips. In a context where more and more people own smartphones, tourists expect to get personalized suggestions just in time whenever and wherever they need. To be effective, mobile applications for travel recommendation should consider both the variability of the user’s interests and an effective way to express them while interacting with the environment. This paper presents LOOKER, a mobile recommender system for tourism and travel-related services that considers the above-described issues. It is an adaptable application developed for the Android platform, which takes into account basic contextual information such as location and time, and implements a content-based filtering (CBF) strategy to make personalized suggestions based on the user’s tourism-related user-generated content (UGC) s/he diffuses on social media. Specifically, the CBF strategy implemented in LOOKER is based on a multi-layer user profile, where the layers representing distinct travel-related service categories (e.g., restaurants, hotels, points of interest) are modeled via language models that are defined on the basis of the captured UGC. This allows inferring the interests and the opinions of travelers about the available items. To evaluate the usefulness and the usability of the LOOKER mobile application, user studies have been conducted. The positive outcomes that have been obtained illustrate the potentials of LOOKER.

- Abstract
In a ubiquitous scenario, people are typically confronted with context evolution and changing inuences. This may create new needs and may condition the user perception of what is relevant information. Over the years, different approaches have been proposed to design personalized Recommender Systems (RS), but state-of-the-art approaches mostly assume a fixed representation of a user profile; the dynamicity of the user's interests (and the way of expressing them) while interacting with the environment is not considered. Aim of this work is to predict a user's preferences in the tourism domain, to provide personalized and contextaware recommendations. Therefore, we define a user profile model which expresses in a formal way the user's opinions with respect to a particular entity. In particular, the proposed approach formally models the user generated content (UGC) connected to a group of reviews (written by expert users) for each entity, and compares it with a (positive and negative) statistical language model representing the target user profile associated with that entity. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated on a real-case scenario.

Within Mobile information retrieval research, context information provides an important basis for identifying and understanding user’s information needs. Therefore search process can take advantage of contextual information to enhance the query and adapt search results to user’s current context. However, the challenge is how to define the best contextual information to be integrated in search process. In this paper, our intention is to build a model that can identify which contextual dimensions strongly influence the outcome of the retrieval process and should therefore be in the user’s focus. In order to achieve these objectives, we create a new query language model based on user’s pereferences. We extend this model in order to define a relevance measure for each contextual dimension, which allow to automatically classify each dimension. This latter is used to compute the degree of change in result lists for the same query enhanced by different dimensions. Our experiments show that our measure can analyze the real user’s context of up to 12000 of dimensions (related to 4000 queries). We also show experimentally the quality of the set of contextual dimensions proposed, and the interest of the measure to understand mobile user’s needs and to enhance his query.

In classical soil mechanics engineers measure shear strains using different types of apparatus; the lateral strain in the soil has not been much studied. This article provides a study on the effect of development of lateral strain and reinforcement form on the shear strength and on the evolution of the mechanical characteristic of beach sand. The mechanical behave of composite material has been investigated thought varying the number of plastic layers, using plastic leaves reinforcement and the combination of the two forms. The results have demonstrated that the strength improvement is significantly affected by the form of the reinforcement and the behavior of reinforced sand is characterized by a relationship among the deviator stress, the angle of friction and the lateral strain. - Abstract
Mobile search is a significant task in information retrieval and when coupled with context awareness technologies they can become key tools for mobile users for Web search applications. Context awareness techniques can increase the usability of mobile search providing personalized and more focussed content. However, Contextualized Mobile Information Retrieval still remains a challenging problem. This problem is to identify contextual dimensions that improve search effectiveness and should therefore be in the user's focus. We propose a context filtering process based on a new Preference Language Model, and a new relevance measurement. The experiments have been performed with over than 6000 contextual dimensions. The results show the potential of our Preference model in limiting the negative effects of contextual information overload by using the relevance measurement. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

We report on a project exploring the development of an AI-enabled system for researching and verifying news articles. In particular, we underscore the value of journalists in the role of designers in a wider multi-disciplinary team including AI experts and interaction designers. We unpack our learnings by presenting three sensitizing concepts for Human-Centred AI technologies in the context of journalism. We contribute these concepts to provoke discussion and inspiration for design work.

The use of AI technology can help to automate news verification workflows, while significantly innovating journalism practices. However, most existing systems are designed in isolation without interactive collaboration with journalists. ‘DMINR’ project aims to bring humans-at-the-center of AI loop for developing a powerful tool that is sympathetic to the way journalists work. In this paper, we attempt to understand how AI can shape journalists’ practices and, crucially, be shaped by them; we aim to design human-centred AI tool that works in synergy with journalists’ practices and strike a useful balance between human and machine intelligence. In this paper, we conducted a Co-design workshop to inform the design of the ‘DMINR’ system. Based on the findings, we outline the main challenges for designing AI systems in the context of journalism, that can serve as a resource for Human-AI interaction design.

We used statistical language models to model the different layers. This model enables us to depict the probability distribution of words within a user’s language that s/he employs over social media in form of textual reviews. The expressive nature of the user profile was explored for the travel-related services recommendation in a restricted geographical area. Furthermore, based on the considered contextual factors, both spatio-temporal and cognitive, we proposed a context-aware and content-based approach for travel recommendation. This approach jointly leverages contextual factors and the user’s topical interests represented by her/his user profile to recommend travel-related services. First, a contextual pre-filtering is applied to estimate the relevance of travel-related services with respect to the user’s spatiotemporal context. Then, a novel Content-Based Filtering approach is performed on top of the selected travel-related services. The CBF approach considers both the user’s profile – as modeled in this thesis – and the travel-related services’ profile, and compare them by means of suitable similarity measures in order to recommend to the user the top-k services that are more similar to the user’s interests. The user profile and the context-aware and content-based recommendation approach proposed in this thesis have been employed in a mobile application that has been developed as a further contribution of this thesis. In particular, we designed a mobile user-friendly recommender system, namely LOOKER, which leverages travel recommendations to a mobile user who is visiting a new city. Moreover, LOOKER addresses the improvement of the user experience through an active learning of users preferences and interactive recommendation. The application was implemented as a Rich Mobile Application, within the PASRI project funded by European Union. We conducted a user study that allows to measure the user’s satisfaction and attitude towards our system. The results demonstrate that our context-aware and content-based approach can increase the recommendation accuracy while improve the user’s experience.

- Abstract
Background: Specific learning disorders (SLD) are poorly known and studied in Tunisia. A National research project on their prevalence was launched recently. Aim of this study was to estimate prevalence of SLD in a cohort of children with school failure., Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study with a population of 287 First and Third grade Primary School students, screened by their teachers as facing learning problems through a systematic screening process based on achievement and behavior. Multidisciplinary assessment consisted in general medical examination, child psychiatry, child neurology, speech therapy and psychology (cognitive). 180 students have been assessed., Results: Prevalence of SLD over study population was 32%, which gives a general population prevalence 6.4%. Most common SLDs were dyslexia and dyscalculia. Most of children with SLD came from disadvantaged social groups., Conclusion: Despite methodological limitations, this first study on SLD sheds some light on their prevalence in Tunisian students, and opens perspectives for future more focused studies and interventions for their management in Tunisia.

- Abstract
We examined the effects of vanadium sulfate (VOSO4) treatment at 5 and 10 mg/kg for 30 days on endocrine pancreas activity and histology in nondiabetic and STZ-induced diabetic rats. In diabetic group, blood glucose levels significantly increased while insulinemia level markedly decreased. At the end of treatment, VOSO4 at a dose of 10 mg/Kg normalized blood glucose level in diabetic group, restored insulinemia, and significantly improved insulin sensitivity. VOSO4 also increased in a dose-dependent manner the number of insulin immunopositive beta cells in pancreatic islets of nondiabetic rats. Furthermore, in the STZ-diabetic group, the decrease in the number of insulin immunopositive beta cells was corrected to reach the control level mainly with the higher dose of vanadium. Therefore, VOSO4 treatment normalized plasma glucose and insulin levels and improved insulin sensitivity in STZ-experimental diabetes and induced beta cells proliferation and/or regeneration in normal or diabetic rats.

- Abstract
Partial trisomy 9p is one of the most common detected autosomal structural anomalies, so the phenotype-genotype correlation of this rearrangement has been well described. Despite variation in size of the 9p duplications, trisomy 9p syndrome is characterized by typical dysmorphic features and a variable but constant psychomotor and mental retardation. Previously reported phenotype genotype correlation studies proposed that the critical region for phenotype is located in 9p22. We report here on a new patient with partial trisomy 9p13.3→9pter in an 8-year-old boy with typical trisomy 9p dysmorphic features but a normal mental development. Cytogenetics investigations showed that our patient karyotype was 47,XY,+ der(22)t(9;22)(p13.q11) inherited by a 3:1 disjunction of a maternal reciprocal translocation t(9;22)(p13.q11). FISH and array CGH analysis were used to better characterize duplicated chromosomal regions and showed a large duplication of chromosome 9p13.3→9pter associated to microduplication in 22q11.1. The size of the duplications in chromosomes 9p and 22q were estimated about 33.9 and 2.67 Mb, respectively. The comparison between this case and those reported in the literature allows us to support that all syndromes show variability and that not all partial trisomies 9p are associated with intellectual disability., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)
