A study concerning the history of the sacrament of penance and its pastoral practice is always an interesting issue. This kind of knowledge can be useful to understand the very sacrament and, especially, the way of its celebration in the ecclesial community along the centuries both from the point of view of the pastors and the faithful. The rereading of the liturgical practice presented in Castellani’s Liber Sacerdotalis, constitutes an interesting and useful contribution to better understanding of how the celebration of penance was performed in the days immediately preceding the Council of Trent. It also helps to verify the content and form of the celebration which appeared in the rituals after the Council. The article shows the context of the penance in the light of Missale (first edition in 1474) and at the background of the great rituals typical of the entire sixteenth century. Access to the original text allows us to grasp numerous details that appear in the 26 chapters of the whole work. Browsing the pages of Sacerdotale is like immersing in the ecclesiastical practice that is permeated by the canonical care for the integrity of confession.

The eleven illuminated missals at the core of this thesis share a distinctive scale that sets them apart from the majority of other decorated missals. Their scale was a key factor in the visual and ritual experiences they offered their patrons and their earliest users. Missals made in the later fourteenth century and the early fifteenth century included some of the physically largest examples of this genre of book ever made. Containing the text of the late medieval Mass, and read by its priest during the ritual’s performance, they were essential components of the ritual that resulted in the physical embodiment of Christ in the Eucharist. Large missals were a distinctive variation of the Mass book. However, existing scholarship has not offered sufficient reasons for a wide-ranging phenomenon of large missal patronage and manufacture. This thesis argues that the scale of these books was a central rhetorical device that magnified their significance and reception. At the heart of this adoption of the large-scale format was the aggrandisement of the Mass itself, reaffirming its place as the central rite of the Christian Church and contemporary devotions about the ritual. Study of these eleven manuscripts suggests that their exceptional size and the treatment of their interior designs supporting their visuality were issues for this particular period. Explanations for the adoption of large Mass books are given by examining their visibility in the Mass, as part of what is termed here the ‘altarscape’. Having established this, this thesis offers reasons for why patrons and clerics used a cumbersome large format for the text of the ritual. The missals unmistakeably reasserted orthodox values in the face of challenges to conventional understanding of the Eucharist from those holding non-conforming views. Simultaneously, the emphasis on expanded proportions arguably reflects contemporary practices of commemoration where being remembered was an essential part of dying well. And finally, the interior and exterior scale of these books was used for new devotional themes, including the Virgin.

CONVENTS , *FOURTEENTH century , *MONASTERIES , *CHURCH history , *FIFTEENTH century , *SIXTEENTH century , *COPYING - Abstract
In this paper the Dominican convent of Zadar has been established as a place where the medieval Dominican choir books from the Badija Collection of the friary of the Friars Minor in Dubrovnik had been used in liturgy. They consist of the two-volume gradual (Badija IV and Badija XII), which is given the main focus here, and the four-volume antiphoner (Badija III, Badija V, Badija X and Badija XI). As an analytical tool the so-called Basistext-Methode is applied (as used by Josef Leisibach and Felix Heinzer), which consists of comparing a liturgical manuscript to an already known manuscript of the presumed liturgical tradition, with the aim of determining deviations from the base text. Here, one of the copies of the codex exemplar of the medieval Dominican liturgy - Rome, Santa Sabina, XIV L1, copied between 1256 and 1259 - served as the base text. The examination included the litanies of all the saints and the sanctoral of both the gradual and the sequentiary. Zadar as the indisputable place of use of these choir books has been confirmed through analysis of the litanies in the gradual, which, together with customary local saints related to the Zadar ecclesiastical territory, also include the name of St. Plato the Martyr, the saint who was crucial for narrowing the provenance of the choir books to the Dominican convent in Zadar, abolished in 1807. The Zadar Dominicans moved into a Benedictine nun's convent with the adjoining church of St. Plato, whose titular continued to be venerated even after the expansion and rededication of the church in 1280, this time as Dominican, with St. Mark as its patron saint, and later St. Dominic. Of the liturgical chant manuscripts of the Dominican convent in Zadar, until now only a fourteenth-century missal in the Benedictine convent of St. Mary was known. Based solely on the liturgical content, one can conclude that the Badija choir books were created between 1256 and 1276, while on the basis of their illumination, Andrea Improta determined that they were produced between 1260 and 1280, probably in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, due to the similarities with the choir books illuminated by the Master of Bagnacavallo (in particular the antiphoner Bagnacavallo, Biblioteca Comunale Taroni, MSS. 1-3). This has also been corroborated by the paleographical analysis of the square chant notation which revealed the Badija choir books to be highly concordant with the five-volume antiphoner copied for the Dominicans of Imola around 1275 (Imola, Museo Diocesano, Corali 5, 6, 7, 9, 10). In an att empt to narrow the proposed time span, the dates connected to the early history of the Dominican church and convent of Zadar appear to be of crucial importance. Since the Dominican church in Zadar was solemnly dedicated in 1280, it seems justified to propose the thesis that the Badija choir books were the property of the new church that year at the latest and may have been specifically commissioned for its dedication. In that case, they could be dated to the 1270s, as much as two centuries earlier than heretofore believed, since Demović had dated them to the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries, while Badurina placed them at the end of the fourteenth century. These medieval choir books from the abolished convent in Zadar have thereby become the earliest known testimony to the Dominican chant tradition in Dalmatia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the texts of two lectures (readings) of the Book of Proverbs (1,1-9 and 3,13-20) in the Second Beram Breviary. They have been compared with six other medieval Slavonic texts, three Glagolitic and three Cyrillic: the First Vrbnik Breviary from the 12th-13th century, the Hrvoje's Missal from the beginning of the 15th century, the Czech Glagolitic Bible from 1416, the Grigorovich Parimejnik from the 12th century, the manuscript from the Russian National Library F.І.461 from the 14th century and the Ostrog Bible from 1591. The comparison shows that there are differences between the Greek and the Latin text, at the syntactic as well as at the lexical level. In the first lecture, both Croatian Breviaries most often follow the syntax of the Latin text, but they preserve the ancient Cyrillo-Methodian vocabulary. In the second lecture there are more differences between the Breviaries. The First Vrbnik Breviary follows the Greek text and is nearly identical with the Cyrillic texts, while the Second Beram Breviary, as well as the Hrvoje's Missal, contains a text, which is closer to the Latin text at the syntactic level, but usually preserves the Cyrillo-Methodian lexemes. It is significant that these two Croatian books (the Second Beram Breviary and the Hrvoje's Missal) contain texts, which are so close to each other. The three Cyrillic texts are nearly identical, they reproduce the Greek text and are evidently successors of an ancient translation, most probably, the one of SS. Cyrill and Methodius. The Czech translation follows the Latin text and it contains some typically Czech lexemes (opatrnost, robat, zprava, počatek, bazen, blazеn, nahrdlek, nalezenie, prodlenie, pravica, levica, cesta, pokoine). Book illumination is not only a matter of the Middle Ages, but also of early modern period as we have documented by illumination on the pages of manuscripts or printed books. Often they are limited to one sheet or page, but it does not detract from their quality or importance. This is also demonstrated by the dedication in the Roman Missal, which was donated in 1657 by husband and wife Bartoděj to castle chapel in Přestavlky. Besides their painted coats of arms, they also commissioned poems celebrating their personalities here. Thus the book represents a unique monument connected with the mentioned chapel. The publication of the Missale Romanum (1570), revised at the behest of the Council of Trent (1545-63), had direct consequences for plainchant. In order to celebrate a sung mass, the contents of graduals had to be brought into conformity with the new missal. In 1572 the Venetian firms of Giunta and Varisco issued the first printed editions of the Graduale Romanum in Italy after the missal's promulgation. The volumes contain prefaces adumbrating the requisite alterations, which from 1580 onwards were mostly assimilated into the contents of subsequent graduals. Three types of modifications affected chant melodies: the removal of text, the addition of text, and the addition of new propers. This study explores these categories in key editions of the Graduale Romanum printed in Italy between 1572 and 1653. Analyses of five offertory chants reveal that the combination of editorial freedom, source interrelation, and textual variants in editions of the Missale Romanum resulted in musical diversity. The removal of text in the offertories Iubilate deo omnis terra and Iubilate deo universa terra reflects the editors' aesthetic preferences and their understanding of musical grammar. In Dextera domini and Iustitiae domini, the addition of text is dependent on the edition of the missal used in the process of collation, the relationships between the sources, and the editors' responses to the changes mandated. The added chant Insurrexerunt in me, with itsmixture of traditional and contemporary characteristics, highlights the freedom with which the editors sourced, or even composed, chant melodies. These findings highlight textual and musical diversity within newly regularized liturgical structures and clarify the relationship between the Council of Trent and plainchant revision. As a result, they call into question the suitability of the "Post-Tridentine" label often given to early modern chant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, successive archbishops of Salzburg attempted to consolidate their power and implement ecclesiastical reforms by means of commissioned printed liturgical books. Achieving uniform worship, however, proved difficult. In editions of the Missale Salisburgense, the revised musical mass prefaces required typographically challenging red notation. The addition or omission of coloured notes by printers and users reveals that the technical limitations of printing together with variable performance practices hindered liturgical uniformitas.

From 1494 until 1512, around a dozen securely datable prints containing or relating to music were published in the city of Salamanca in present-day Spain. To date, these works have not been considered as a group. This thesis takes the perspective of the Salmantine printers to examine this corpus. To do so, the study gathers methods and secondary sources from a variety of fields, particularly combining history of the Iberian book with musicology. The thesis establishes Juan de Porras as the dominant printer in Salmantine music printing production with prominent connections to the Fonseca family, particularly the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela, Alfonso II de Fonseca. Music production was also motivated by liturgical reforms sweeping across the Peninsula, as well as related language reforms occurring at the University of Salamanca. While liturgical prints had pre-established markets and patrons, marketing techniques in the music treatises show that these works were targeted to different segments of Iberian society. The thesis includes three appendices which 1) collate all identifiable persons in the prints, 2) present a catalogue of Salmantine music prints from 1494 to 1512, and 3) compare music types used in the liturgical books of the corpus.

The article presents the results of work on archaeographic research of the Metropolinate of Novosibirsk parish book collections, done in 2019–2020. The researchers of the Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts of SPSTL SB RAS inventoried the books of Cyrillic and civil press kept in the parish library of Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke in Kupino (Kupinsky district of Novosibirsk province). 35 Orthodox books of the Cyrillic tradition and of the Russian civil type of the first half of the 17th – early 20th centuries were made known, among them, 2 editions of the 17th century printed by the Moscow Print Yard, 4 Old Believer editions of the late 19th – early 20th centuries, 19 Synodal editions of the Cyrillic type from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries and 12 Synodal editions of the Russian civil type. The aim of the article is to present the results of scientific description and an archaeographic analysis of individual features of the most interesting book exemplars. Through complication of describing such book collections, which did not usually preserve intact or partially samples of pre-revolutionary parish book stocks and were shaped from various sources, priority was given to describing the owner’s signs of each sample that reflected the history of their existence in one or another social environment. Among the earliest there were described the perfectly preserved Moscow Gospel of 1627, the owner’s and donative records of which reflected its displacement from the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to Moscovia, where it could have come after Smolensk campaign of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich. Another interesting example of editions of the Moscow Print Yard already from the post-schism period is the Irmologion of 1657, in which course of the description significant differences from other known copies were revealed. The late Old Believers liturgical books, that preserved the fragments of hand-written and early printed books, give interesting owners signs. The collection of synodal publications of the St Luke parish library covers a wide chronological and thematic range. Besides liturgical books such as psalteries, missal books, miscellanies of Akathist hymns there are also collections of sermons, manuals on theology, church singing and Sacred history. The article presents brief versions of the books of Cyrillic press of the St Like parish library, clearly showing the wide geographical distribution of the Russian Orthodox book both in the late medieval times and in the 20th century, as well as characteristic signs of its existence in various readership.

The essay deals with the relationship between liturgy und integrity of creation. It aims at providing a liturgical and theological explanation to the question: whether the Christian liturgy can contribute to the global movement regarding the integrity of creation. This study analyses theologically some selected eucharistic prayer texts in which the praise of God the Creator and of his works of creation occur. This study shows us that the theme of creation was an integral part of ancient Christian eucharistic prayers, and it remains the important element of the eucharistic prayers in the new time. The introduction of the theme of creation into the new eucharistic prayers in Roman Missal 1970 was one of the visible fruits of the eucharistic prayer reform after the second Vatican council. On the one hand, it expresses the new awareness of the richness of ancient liturgical tradition. On the other hand, the motif of creation has a close relevance to the hope and concern of our times. It should offer us a theological and liturgical inspiration in developing an ethical awareness and human responsibility toward the integration of creation.

Wprowadzenie Celem niniejszego opracowania będzie próba ustalenia zakresu różnic wprowadzonych w dziale Mszału Rzymskiego zatytułowanym "De defectibus in celebratione missae occurrentibus" od Mszału Piusa V do Mszału Jana XXIII. Realizacja celu pracy będzie możliwa dzięki dogłębnej i szczegółowej analizie porównawczej oraz teologicznej tych ksiąg liturgicznych, które zostaną wskazane jako materiał źródłowy niniejszego opracowania. W niniejszym opracowaniu wykorzystane zostaną dwie podstawowe metody pozwalające na realizację postawionego celu badawczego. Pierwszą z nich będzie analiza porównawcza, która zostanie użyta w części pracy poświęconej zestawieniu różnic w poszczególnych księgach liturgicznych. To narzędzie umożliwi wychwycenie wszystkich istotnych rozbieżności dzielących poszczególne księgi liturgiczne, zwłaszcza Mszał Piusa V i Mszał Jana XXIII. Drugą metodą badawczą będzie synteza teologiczna polegająca na próbie wskazania implikacji teologicznych wynikających z zaobserwowanych różnic pomiędzy rubrykami poszczególnych ksiąg liturgicznych. Oprócz wskazanych już Mszału Piusa V i Mszału Jana XXIII istotne wydaje się uwzględnienie Mszału Klemensa VIII oraz Mszału Benedykta XV. Taki wybór jest zasadny z jednego podstawowego powodu. Edycja z 1604 roku stanowi drugą edycję typiczną Mszału Rzymskiego, a zatem pierwsze wydanie wzorcowe od editio princeps, w którym papież mógł wprowadzić jakieś zmiany w dziale "De defectibus". The aim of this study is to try to establish the scope of the differences introduced in the section of the Roman Missal entitled De defectibus in celebratione missae occurrentibus from the Missal of Pius V to the Missal of John XXIII. Its implementation is possible thanks to an in-depth and detailed comparative and theological analysis of these liturgical books, which will be indicated as the source material for this study. This study uses two basic methods to achieve the research goal set. The first one is a comparative analysis, which is used in the part devoted to comparing the differences in individual liturgical books. This tool makes it possible to spot all the significant discrepancies between the various liturgical books, especially the Missal of Pius V and the Missal of John XXIII. The second research method is a theological synthesis consisting in an attempt to indicate theological implications resulting from the observed differences between the rubrics of particular liturgical books. Therefore, it seems reasonable to consider only four source materials. In addition to the aforementioned Missal of Pius V and Missal of John XXIII), it seems important to include the Missal of Clement VIII and the Missal of Benedict XV, which is justified by one fundamental reason. The 1604 edition is the second typical edition of the Roman Missal, and therefore the first edition after the editio princeps, in which the Pope could introduce some changes to the section De defectibus. The 1920 edition, on the other hand, is the last typical edition of the Missal before the typical edition of John XXIII, which, after all, is not recognized by all Catholics. In the light of the analyses carried out, it is also obvious that the De defectibus section changed many times over the course of almost four hundred years (1570–1962). About a hundred modifications were made from Pius V’s edition to the last typical edition of the unreformed Roman Missal. This includes just over thirty stylistic changes and sixty-seven substantive modifications. Among the substantive changes, thirty-seven were apparent and thirty-two were real. Certain points in De defectibus were modified a number of times over a period of several centuries.

The aim of the presented article is to draw attention to selected linguistic and stylistic aspects of Polish translations of the missal. The article will first discuss selected factors that should be taken into account by the translator of liturgical texts, with particular emphasis on those issues that concern the recipient of these texts and his linguistic competence, the communicative situation in which the recipient has contact with these texts, as well as which are related to the specificity of the religious language itself as serving to contact the sphere of the sacred. Then, on the basis of comparative analyzes of the Roman Missal for Polish dioceses from 1986 and the Polish edition of the Missale Romanum from 2002, which is currently under construction, selected positive linguistic tendencies observed especially in the proposals for the new translation will be discussed, as well as the issues (appearing in both compared versions), which raise objections from the point of view of linguistic and stylistic correctness as well as communicativeness.

There is an interesting collection of manuscripts from the parish church of St. James in Brno. This collection covers a continuous period from early years of the church in 13th century up to early modern time. The collection has been preserved relatively untouched up to these days which is important and quite rare fact. Today it contains 127 manuscripts which can be found in the Brno city archive. Naturally, most of them are liturgical books and many also contain musical notation. This paper aims to present those liturgical books of the collection, which are musicologically relevant. There are mainly missals, but also Psalters, breviaries and graduals can be found in the collection. Main expansion of the manuscript collection ended around 1500. By this time new printed books came into use.

The ecumenical dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion is one of the most important and difficult part of activity of both communities. Eucharist is the main goal of ecumenism because in the common celebrating of the sacred liturgy the Christ’s Church is a visible sign of the unity for the world. One of the most important theological problems in the dialogue is the problem of transsubstantiation. For the Anglican Church this Catholic doctrine is against the biblical and rudimental teaching of primitive Christendom. The article shows the problem of trans- substantiation in the ecumenical perspective and in the context of Divine Worship: The Missal. The Catholic Eucharistic teaching is present in this new Western liturgical book, but the term of trans- substantiation does not exist there.

Obrzędy zakończenia w edycjach typicznych mszału Pawła VI Niniejsze opracowanie ukazuje strukturę obrzędów zakończenia Mszy św. w mszale posoborowym i zmiany w trzech edycjach typicznych. Dlatego opracowanie podaje wybrane historyczne korzenie obrzędów i prezentuje wprowadzane poprawki w mszale. Umożliwia to lepsze zrozumienie ewolucji poszczególnych elementów obrzędów i daje impuls do dalszego pogłębiania studiów nad korzeniami zreformowanych obrzędów liturgicznych.

Exeter Cathedral Library and Archives MS 3515 (hereafter EXcl 3515), a notated missal located in Exeter Cathedral, has to date received very little scholarly attention. This neglect may be due to the absence of a liturgical kalendar and evidence of local saints in the Sanctorale. Its assignment to the thirteenth century with a generic English origin suggests that critical questions concerning provenance and dating have been overlooked. The source itself comprises four disparate sections assembled so as to create a complete liturgical cycle. Yet the parts are not as separate as hitherto believed. A comparative investigation reveals not only an Exeter provenance and a twelfth-century dating, but also a new witness to the St Denis/Corbie tradition. Research also reveals unexpected threads of liturgical continuity with the Anglo-Saxon past. As a complete pre-Sarum source of Mass prayers, chants and readings, EXcl 3515 offers a useful lens with which to view a transitional period in the development of a medieval secular liturgy in England. (By contrast, the three dominant cathedrals – Salisbury, York and Hereford – all lack notated chant sources from this period.) EXcl 3515 adds not only significant new data to the current information on secular liturgies, but also challenges accepted theories on the shaping of a distinctive English Use in southwest England.

Misale hranijo ljubljanska Narodna in univerzitetna knjižnica, Semeniška knjižnica in knjižnica Narodnega muzeja Slovenije. While studying woodcut illustrations, I focused on the Ljubljana area and on the most important full-page depiction of the crucifixion. The missals also contain other fine art elements that contribute to the final visual image of the book, such as: leather binding with embossed decorations, fittings, selection of paper and watermarks. The books are kept in the National and University Library, the Seminary Library and Slovenian National Museum’s library. I limited myself to the 15th and 16th centuries, as the woodcut illustration of that period has been somewhat neglected. With the introduction of printed book illustrations, the images lost some of their lustre and were no longer as attractive from the reader's point of view. However, this does not apply to liturgical books, given that they continue to represent the peak of book production.

MANUSCRIPTS ,CHURCH music - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prefation as an integral element mass celebration Thanksgiving is an important climate for the celebration of the Eucharist. The development of the Mass rites, from the breaking of bread in the apostolic times, through the medieval rites recorded in the sacramentaries, including the post-Tridentine Missal of Pius V, which unified Mass rites, up to the Missale Romanum of Paul VI of 1970, was carried out with the awareness that through them the participants of the liturgy were disposed to express gratitude to God for the work of creation, salvation, and sanctification. A special way of exposing the concrete saving interventions of God, especially the saving deeds of Christ, is the preface. It is an integral part of the celebration of the Eucharist. The multiplicity of the preface, as many as 267 in the Sacramentary of Verona from the 7th century, as well as 100 in the Missal of Paul VI, testifies to the fact that the Church cares very much to revive the awareness of the great works of God, making present in the celebration of the paschal mystery of the incarnate Son of God. The present shape of the masses’ prefaces is rooted in Christian antiquity. The dialogical nature of the preface prayer is also derived from that time., {"references":["Abramowiczówna, Z. (1962). The publication of the Missale Romanum (1570), revised at the behest of the Council of Trent (1545–63), had direct consequences for plainchant. In order to celebrate a sung mass, the contents of graduals had to be brought into conformity with the new missal. In 1572 the Venetian firms of Giunta and Varisco issued the first printed editions of the Graduale Romanum in Italy after the missal’s promulgation. The removal of text in the offertories Iubilate deo omnis terra and Iubilate deo universa terra reflects the editors’ aesthetic preferences and their understanding of musical grammar. In Dextera domini and Iustitiae domini, the addition of text is dependent on the edition of the missal used in the process of collation, the relationships between the sources, and the editors’ responses to the changes mandated. The added chant Insurrexerunt in me, with its mixture of traditional and contemporary characteristics, highlights the freedom with which the editors sourced, or even composed, chant melodies. These findings highlight textual and musical diversity within newly regularized liturgical structures and clarify the relationship between the Council of Trent and plainchant revision. As a result, they call into question the suitability of the “Post-Tridentine” label often given to early modern chant.

In May 1464, the annual chapter of Durham Cathedral Priory accepted a proposal that the Sub-Prior should be responsible for the missals and chalices used in the Priory’s ‘ludi ordinarii’ (liturgical performances). This article identifies two of these liturgical books as the Durham Missal (MS BL Harley 5289) and the Durham Processional (MS BL Royal 7A.VI, Item 28 [fols 116-26], which is referred to in the Missal as the ordinale; one of the chalices referred to was the ‘Judas Cup’, which was only used in the service commemorating the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday. Using these two manuscripts together with the descriptions of liturgical ritual in The Rites of Durham, which was completed in 1593 but describes the cathedral’s ceremonies in the 1530s, the article reconstructs the contents of the annual quasi-dramatic ceremonies in the Priory on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, and shows that while these ceremonies do not amount to liturgical drama in the fullest sense, they include important quasi-dramatic elements of which the monks of Durham were well aware.

The Eucharist, a gift of God’s fatherly love, is the heart of the Church life. It constitutes the most important reality, but also a sacrament of everyday life. Awareness of that great gift leads to a deep need for gaining an insight into the beginnings of the Eucharist—the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The aim of the present article is to investigate the theological content of the antiphons, the song, and the hymn included in the contemporary Polish Roman Missal. The Author will present a theological analysis of the Polish antiphons, the song, and the hymn from the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in the chronological order of their appearance in the contemporary liturgy. The texts will be subject to historical and linguistic analysis. The texts of the antiphons are rooted in the Bible. For that reason they will be first analyzed from the historical point of view, and then juxtaposed with the version from the Millennium Bible and with the original Greek text, in order to identify differences and analogies between them. Next, the texts will be analyzed from the linguistic and pragmatic perspective. The consideration will end with a short summary of the sources and theological motifs identified in the course of the analysis.

- Abstract
This thesis examines atonement theology in the Church of Swedens missal (Kyrkohandbok för Svenska kyrkan) published in 2018. By identifying atonement motifs the thesis identifies and discusses which types of atonement theology that dominates the missal. Four subquestions are used to identify and discuss the atonement theology expressed; Why is atonenment needed? What is atonement? How is atonement acheived? Is there potentially problematic aspects of the atonoment theology that is identified? The atonement theology which is identified is mainly of two sorts. The healing process and the atoning obedience. The thesis then tries to handle one such problematic aspect by discussing how to understand the concept of sacrifice which is central to the atoning obedience and by integrating the atonement theology of divinization, theosis, into the understanding of atonement that is dominant in the missal of the Church of Sweden. The thesis argues that properly understood, sacrifice and divinization offers a way forward in order to understand the theology of atonement in a way both true to the christian tradition and and comprehendible to society in the 21st century.

- Abstract
The Christian Liturgy is a "celebration of faith" and the same mystery is celebrated under diverse legitimate forms in the various liturgical Rites of the East and the West. The Christian Mystery is so great that no human approximation can exhaust it and because of this the Church is pleased to "publicly recognize" its faith according to expressions from diverse rites and liturgical forms. Among these liturgies, with its own secular tradition, is the Hispano-Mozarabic Liturgy and its Missal. In this article we will explore the faith in the Virginity of Mary and its implications throughout the Hispano-Mozarabic Missal. It is not only present in her feasts or liturgical memorials, but also throughout the whole liturgical year due to its singular association with the Mystery of Christ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Missal of Kotor has long been known to scholars specializing in Beneventan script. The designation of it comes from a brief notice in the Calendar for the feast of St. Tryphon, patron of the Kotor cathedral, and an illustration of a young man above which was much later written Tryphon's name. Whether or not the manuscript was made for the cathedral of Kotor dedicated to St. Tryphon or elsewhere and then eventually taken to or used in the cathedral is the question addressed by this article. Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts were collected in North America from about 1820. Four key sources of them can be identified: 1. Ancestral ownership of books brought by early settlers; 2. Acquisitions by missionaries and scholars; 3. Mementos acquired by elites on European Grand Tours; 4. Purchases by bibliophiles from international sales catalogues, domestic booksellers, and auctions of imported volumes. Examples of such manuscripts are identified in this article, and their early owners are recognized as pioneering collectors. A small but profitable commerce in manuscripts emerged in major cities, chiefly New York, where the firm of Daniel Appleton held an early monopoly. Appleton’s had acquired two chests of illuminated manuscripts in Paris. Selling was a challenge, however. Since medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in the New World were unreadable books because of language and script, enterprising booksellers were forced to develop innovative ways to sell them. Appleton’s, for example, used “placement advertising” to sell its manuscripts, publishing articles on medieval topics that mentioned or evoked manuscripts. Two ways of marketing manuscripts came to predominate by the middle of the nineteenth century. The book dealer Joseph Sabin promoted “artifactual reading.” He emphasized the materiality of manuscripts, their possession by fanatic monks, their esoteric rarity, and the possibility of owning the lifetime work of a sensitive, if unschooled, artist. Sabin detailed his ideas in the auction catalogues he authored. George P. Philes, by contrast, published a newsletter called Philobiblion, in which he debunked Sabin’s manuscript mythologies. His marketing was bibliographical. Manuscripts, Philes suggested, were not rare, nor the life-works of religious, nor objects of mystical veneration. He marketed elite collectors who considered themselves New World aristocrats. Philes got his novel ideas from Archives du Bibliophile, a Paris journal published by Anatole Claudin. Philes translated many of its articles and even sold manuscripts that had been offered in Archives. This effort was a rare instance of influence by the Paris booktrade on the New York market.

The typology of missals, one of the main liturgical books of the Latin Church, was in the focus of the study. Using the example of illuminated missals of the 15th century from the collection of the Russian State Library, the author demonstrated the typological diversity of the late medieval missals. A wide range of manuscripts is stored in Russian and foreign libraries and museums. Currently, part of them is in digital form and available for research, which enables to systematize different types of late medieval missals. The main principles of systematization presented by the author are the division by the content according to a liturgical rite, and by use, the division by different types of book illumination according to use and traditions of regional schools. It also seemed very important to define typical and unique monuments contained special iconographic program, or characterized by the highest level of its decoration, created in accordance with the preferences of the patron, and analyzing the groups of patrons. The author described the practical functions of the book illumination, the internal hierarchy of the elements of decoration — full-page miniatures, historiated and ornamental initials, and the relationship between image and liturgical text. The article covers the initial stage of the research on the history and typology of the late medieval missals.
