A straightforward synthesis of the pentasaccharide with a readily available linker arm corresponding to the O-antigenic polysaccharide of Acinetobacter junii strain 65 has been achieved in good yield. The synthesis has been carried out using thioglycosides as glycosyl donor in the presence of a combination of N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) as thiophilic activator. The yields of the glycosylation steps were very good with satisfactory stereochemistry at the glycosidic linkages. Amyloid proteins and peptides play a pivotal role in the etiology of various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Synthetically designed small molecules/ peptides/ peptidomimetics show promise towards inhibition of various kinds of amyloidosis. However, exploration of compounds isolated from natural extracts having such potential is lacking. Herein, we have investigated the repurposing of a traditional Indian medicine Lasunadya Ghrita (LG) in AD. LG is traditionally used to treat gut dysregulation and mental illnesses. Various extracts of LG were obtained, characterized, and analyzed for inhibition of Aβ aggregation. Biophysical studies show that the water extract of LG (LG WE ) is more potent in inhibiting Aβ peptide aggregation and defibrillation of Aβ40/Aβ42 aggregates. NMR studies showed that LG WE binds to the central hydrophobic area and C-terminal residues of Aβ40/Aβ42, thereby modulating the aggregation, and reducing cell membrane damage. Additionally, LG WE rescues Aβ toxicity in neuronal SH-SY5Y cells evident from decreases in ROS generation, membrane leakage, cellular apoptosis, and calcium dyshomeostasis. Notably, LG WE is non-toxic to neuronal cells and mouse models. An efficient synthetic strategy has been developed to achieve a pyruvic acid acetal containing tetrasaccharide repeating unit corresponding to the K82 capsular polysaccharide of Acinetobacter baumannii LUH5534 strain in very good yield. The synthetic scheme involves the use of suitably functionalized monosaccharide thioglycosides as glycosyl donors and a combination of N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) and trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) as thiophilic glycosylation activator to furnish satisfactory yield of the products with appropriate stereochemistry at the glycosidic linkages. Introduction: The ongoing visceral leishmaniasis (VL) elimination programme in India is targeting the elimination of the disease VL but not the pathogen. The persistence of hidden parasite pool may initiate a resurgence in suitable conditions. This study dealt with a novel approach to unearth such pathogen pool and their proper management to prevent the resurgence of VL., Materials and Methods: We deployed a new approach for detection of pathogen pool by following up the VL and post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis patients treated during the last 10 years along with mass sero-surveillance within a radius of 500 m of recently treated individuals., Results: We followed up 72.6% (3026/4168) previously treated VL and post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis patients and diagnosed 42 (1.4%) new and 38 (1.3%) recurrent post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. We detected 93 asymptomatic leishmanial infection, 8 VL and 1 post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis by mass sero-surveillance., Conclusion: Our three-step process including mapping and follow-up of previously treated cases, mass surveillance within 500 m of radius of known cases, and 6 monthly follow-on clinical and serological screening of asymptomatic cases, enabled detection of previously undetected cases of post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis and VL. Recurrent post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis deserves special attention regarding their treatment guideline. Early diagnosis and effective treatment of all leishmaniasis cases will hasten pathogen elimination and prevent resurgence of VL. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are front-line warriors in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is of interest to assess the psychological and physical effects of personal protective equipment (PPE) among HCWs caring for COVID-19 patients. This cross-sectional study utilized a validated, well-structured questionnaire consisting of 24 questions to collect information on the psychological and physical effects experienced by HCWs. The study adhered to relevant EQUATOR guidelines for reporting. The study collected online data from 114 HCWs working in COVID-19 settings while using PPE. Among the respondents, 33% reported anxiety, 23.1% experienced apprehension after donning PPE, and 68.1% felt discomfort. Additionally, 46.2% required up to 12 hours for psychological restoration after a COVID-19 duty shift, 17.6% were worried about the risk of infection, and 28.6% were extremely worried about infecting family members while on duty. The findings highlight significant discomfort, anxiety, and apprehension among HCWs due to prolonged PPE use, reflecting the immense psychological burden of working in high-risk environments during the pandemic. Patients with cognitive deficits have a prolonged latency and reduced amplitude of the P300 wave. However, no study has correlated P300 wave alterations with the cognitive performance of patients with cerebellar lesions. We aimed to determine if the cognitive status of these patients was associated with P300 wave alterations. We recruited 30 patients with cerebellar lesions from the wards of the N.R.S. Medical College, Kolkata, in West Bengal (India). The Kolkata Cognitive Screening Battery tasks and the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) were used to assess the cognitive status and the International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale (ICARS) for cerebellar signs. We compared the results with the normative data of the Indian population. Patients had P300 wave alterations with a significant increase in latency and a non-significant trend in amplitude. In a multivariate model, P300 wave latency was positively associated with the ICARS kinetic subscale (p = 0.005) and age (p = 0.009), regardless of sex and years of education. In the model that included cognitive variables, P300 wave latency was negatively associated with performance in phonemic fluency (p = 0.035) and construction (p = 0.009). Furthermore, P300 wave amplitude was positively associated with the FAB total score (p < 0.001). In closing, patients with cerebellar lesions had an increase in latency and a decrease in the amplitude of the P300 wave. These P300 wave alterations were also associated with worse cognitive performance and some of the subscales of the ICARS, reinforcing that the cerebellum has motor, cognitive, and affective functions., (© 2023. The effects of two ionic liquids (ILs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim]BF 4 ) and 1-butyl-1-methyl pyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate ([bmp]BF 4 ), on a mixture of phospholipids (PLs) 1,2-dipalmitoyl- sn -glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), 1,2-dipalmitoyl- sn -glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DPPE), and 1,2-dipalmitoyl- sn -glycero-3-phosphoglycerol (DPPG) (6:3:1, M/M/M, 70% PL) in combination with 30 mol % cholesterol (CHOL) were investigated in the form of a solvent-spread monolayer and bilayer (vesicle). Surface pressure (π)-area ( A ) isotherm studies, using a Langmuir surface balance, revealed the formation of an expanded monolayer, while the cationic moiety of the IL molecules could electrostatically and hydrophobically bind to the PLs on the palisade layer. Turbidity, dynamic light scattering (size, ζ-potential, and polydispersity index), electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray/neutron scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetric studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of IL on the structural organization of bilayer in the vesicles. The ILs could induce vesicle aggregation by acting as a "glue" at lower concentrations (<1.5 mM), while at higher concentrations, the ILs disrupt the bilayer structure. Besides, ILs could result in the thinning of the bilayer, evidenced from the scattering studies. Steady-state fluorescence anisotropy and lifetime studies suggest asymmetric insertion of ILs into the lipid bilayer. MTT assay using human blood lymphocytes indicates the safe application of vesicles in the presence of ILs, with a minimal toxicity of up to 2.5 mM IL in the dispersion. These results are proposed to have applications in the field of drug delivery systems with benign environmental impact.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has evolved into a severe public health issue that defies all current control strategies and needs multidisciplinary, creative solutions. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) activities demand a set of tools and abilities that can be used by health systems. In view of the growing AMR and the difficulty for the surveillance of it in the developing country, this study was conducted to incorporate pharmacovigilance (PV) in the AMS program., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted to collect the PV database of antimicrobials induced adverse drug reactions (ADR) from the Adverse Drug Reactions Monitoring Center (AMC) of the institute for a period of 2 months from August 2022 to September 2022. The information from the database was analyzed to estimate the usage of antibiotics from the PV database from AMC and classified it under the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical, to assess the rationality of the antimicrobial's usage based on "Access," "Watch," and "Reserve" (AWaRe) classification, and to assess the ADR of the antibiotics. The analysis was done by using the SPSS version 20.0 for Windows., Results: The results showed that the prevalence of ADRs were more in adults' population with preponderance in female. The antibiotics usage was as per with World Health Organization standard and most of the antibiotics used were from the Access group of AWaRe classifications. Tetracyclines and penicillins were the most used antibiotic group of drugs. The number of patients included in the study was 70. Most of the causality assessment was "possible" (62.85%). In developing countries, informal sector is the primary job provider for a significant portion of the workforce. This study aims to analyze how jobs in the informal sector affect the unemployment dynamics of developing nations. To achieve this goal, we formulate a nonlinear mathematical model by categorizing the considered workforce into three distinct classes: unemployed, employed, and self-employed, and include a separate dynamic variable to represent vacancies within the informal sector. The proposed model is analyzed using the qualitative theory of dynamical systems. A threshold quantity known as the reproduction number is derived and using this, one can compute the job generation rate necessary to stabilize the system. It is observed that variations in the reproduction number lead to qualitative changes, such as transcritical (forward or backward) and saddle-node bifurcations in the formulated system. Moreover, we propose an optimal control problem to determine an optimal strategy for government policy implementation in enhancing the employment rate of unemployed individuals and promoting the self-employment of informal employees inside the informal sector. Further, the analytical findings are validated numerically. Seroma formation is a common sequel following modified radical mastectomy (MRM), which hinders healing, may prolong hospital stay, and cause a delay in adjuvant treatment. Closed suction drains have been used to prevent formation of seroma; however, the use of a single drain in the axilla along with draining the mastectomy flaps and axilla separately remains a topic of debate. This prospective randomized dual-arm study was conducted in the Department of Endocrine Surgery. All female patients with carcinoma breast diagnosed on core tissue biopsy, undergoing modified radical mastectomy, upfront or post neoadjuvant systemic therapy were included. Patients were randomized into two groups. In the first group, a single drain was placed in the axilla whereas in the second group, a drain each was placed below the mastectomy flaps and the axilla. Patients' particulars and the weight of the mass excised along with the operative details were documented. The volume of the drain was recorded daily. The flap drain was removed on postoperative day 5 and the axillary drain was removed when the drain volume was less than 30 mL/24 h for 2 consecutive days. The period of drain placement, volume of drainage, volume of seroma (if formed), and other complications (if any) were recorded. Patients in the single drain group had a significantly earlier drain removal time as compared to those with double drains ( p  = 0.01). The number of patients in whom seroma formation had occurred was more in the double drain group, but the difference was not significant. The average volume of aspirated seroma fluid was insignificantly more in the single drain group. The only other complication noticed was flap necrosis-in 5% patients of the double drain group. Total volume of drainage ( p  < 0.0001) and type of drain ( p  = 0.0208) were associated with higher rates of seroma formation, whereas BMI ( p  = 0.0516), weight of excised breast mass ( p  = 0.407), and age ( p  = 0.6379) were not associated with the rate of seroma formation. Outcomes in terms of drain volume or seroma formation were statistically indifferent between the two groups. Nutritive value of five Cenchrus ciliaris (buffel grass) genotypes (IG96-50, IG96-96, IG96-358, IG96-401 and IG96-403) weredetermined. Their sugar contents (>70 mg/g of dry matter) and ensiling potential were evaluated using in vitro batch culture and in vivo studies. Research indicated significant differences (P < 0.05) in the dry matter, organic matter, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, cellulose and lignin contents of the C. ciliaris genotypes tested. Genotypes also differed (P < 0.05) in total carbohydrates, structural carbohydrates, non-structural carbohydrates and protein fractions. Genotype IG96-96 had the lowest total digestible nutrients, digestible energy and metabolizable energy contents (377.2 g/kg, 6.95 and 5.71 MJ/kg of dry matter, respectively), and net energy values for lactation, maintenance and growth. After 45 days of ensiling, C. ciliaris silages differed (P < 0.05) in dry matter, pH, and lactic acid contents, and their values ranged between 255-339, 4.06-5.17 g/kg of dry matter and 10.8-28.0 g/kg of dry matter, respectively. Maize silage had higher (P < 0.05) Organic Matter (919.5g/kg of dry matter), ether extract (20.4g/kg of dry matter) and hemi-cellulose (272.3 g/kg of dry matter) than IG96-401 and IG96-96 silages. The total carbohydrates and non-structural carbohydrates of maize silage were higher (P < 0.05), while structural carbohydrates were comparable (P < 0.05) with C. ciliaris silages. Sheep on maize silage had (P < 0.05) higher metabolizable energy, lower crude protein, and digestible crude protein intake (g/kg of dry matter) than those on C. ciliaris silage diets. Nitrogen intake and urinary-N excretion were higher (P < 0.05) on genotype IG96-96 silage diet. Introduction: Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), are prevalent in a large part of the human population across the world, especially in children below 5 years of age and pregnant women in developing countries. Since wheat constitutes a significant proportion of the human diet, improving grain Fe and Zn content in wheat has become important in improving human health., Objective: This study aimed to quantify the effect of foliar application of iron sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO 4 .7H 2 O) and zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO 4 .7H 2 O) and their combination on grain Fe and Zn concentrations, as well as grain protein content (GPC). The study also aimed to assess the utility of these applications in large field conditions., Methods: To address this issue, field experiments were conducted using 10 wheat cultivars and applying a foliar spray of FeSO 4 .7H 2 O (0.25%) and ZnSO 4 .7H 2 O (0.50%) separately (@400 L of solution in water per hectare during each spray) and in combination at two different crop growth stages (flowering and milking) for three consecutive crop seasons (2017-2020). The study used a split-plot design with two replications to assess the impact of foliar application on GFeC, GZnC, and GPC. In addition, an experiment was also conducted to assess the effect of soil (basal) @ 25 kg/ha ZnSO 4 , foliar @ 2 kg/ha, ZnSO 4 .7H 2 O (0.50%), and the combination of basal + foliar application of ZnSO 4 on the grain micronutrient content of wheat cultivar WB 02 under large field conditions., Results: GFeC increased by 5.1, 6.1, and 5.9% with foliar applications of FeSO 4 , ZnSO 4 , and their combination, respectively. GZnC increased by 5.2, 39.6, and 43.8% with foliar applications of FeSO 4 , ZnSO 4 , and their combination, respectively. DBW 173 recorded the highest increase in GZnC at 56.9% with the combined foliar application of FeSO 4 and ZnSO 4 , followed closely by HPBW 01 at 53.0% with the ZnSO 4 foliar application, compared to the control. The GPC increased by 6.8, 4.9, and 3.3% with foliar applications of FeSO 4 , ZnSO 4 , and their combination, respectively. Large-plot experiments also exhibited a significant positive effect of ZnSO 4 not only on grain Zn (40.3%, p  ≤ 0.001) and protein content ( p  ≤ 0.05) but also on grain yield ( p  ≤ 0.05) and hectoliter weight ( p  ≤ 0.01), indicating the suitability of the technology in large field conditions., Conclusion: Cultivars exhibited a slight increase in GFeC with solitary foliar applications of FeSO 4 , ZnSO 4 , and their combination. In contrast, a significant increase in GZnC was observed with the foliar application of ZnSO 4 and the combined application of FeSO 4 and ZnSO 4 . In terms of GPC, the most significant enhancement occurred with the foliar application of FeSO 4 , followed by ZnSO 4 and their combination. Data demonstrated the significant effect of foliar application of ZnSO 4 on enhancing GZnC by 39.6%. To address such challenges, the field of smart drug delivery has emerged aiming at designing and developing delivery systems that can target specific cells, tissues, and organs and have minimal off-target side-effects., Methods: A literature search was done to collate papers and reports about the currently available various strategies for smart nano-inspired drug delivery. The databases searched were PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Based on selection criteria, the most pertinent and recent items were included., Results: Smart drug delivery is a cutting-edge revolutionary intervention in modern medicines to ensure effective and safe administration of therapeutics to target sites. These hold great promise for targeted and controlled delivery of therapeutic agents to improve the efficacy with reduced side-effects as compared to the conventional drug delivery approaches. Current smart drug delivery approaches include nanoparticles, liposomes, micelles, and hydrogels, each with its own advantages and limitations. The success of these delivery systems lies in engineering and designing them, and optimizing their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics properties., Conclusion: Development of drug delivery systems that can get beyond various physiological and clinical barriers, as observed in conventionally administered chemotherapeutics, has been possible through recent advancements. Currently, India has become one of the largest economies of the world in which tourism and hospitality have significantly contributed; however, the growth rate of tourism industry has been greatly affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we have used the modeling approach to analyze and understand the growth pattern of Indian tourism industry. To achieve this, we consider the data of international tourist arrivals before and after the lockdown. The Dickey-Fuller test, AIC and BIC methods are used to obtain the best fitted model and further, the accuracy of obtained model is also analyzed. The unprecedented scale and rapidity of dissemination of re-emerging and emerging infectious diseases impose new challenges for regulators and health authorities. To curb the dispersal of such diseases, proper management of healthcare facilities and vaccines are core drivers. In the present work, we assess the unified impact of healthcare facilities and vaccination on the control of an infectious disease by formulating a mathematical model. To formulate the model for any region, we consider four classes of human population; namely, susceptible, infected, hospitalized, and vaccinated. It is assumed that the increment in number of beds in hospitals is continuously made in proportion to the number of infected individuals. To ensure the occurrence of transcritical, saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations, the conditions are derived. The normal form is obtained to show the existence of Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. To validate the analytically obtained results, we have conducted some numerical simulations. Within the framework of a food web, the foraging behavior of meso-carnivorous species is influenced by fear responses elicited by higher trophic level species, consequently diminishing the fecundity of these species. In this study, we investigate a three-species food chain model comprising of prey, an intermediate predator, and a top predator. We assume that both the birth rate and intraspecies competition of prey are impacted by fear induced by the intermediate predator. Additionally, the foraging behavior of the intermediate predator is constrained due to the presence of the top predator. It is essential to note that the top predators exhibit a generalist feeding behavior, encompassing food sources beyond the intermediate predators. The study systematically determines all feasible equilibria of the proposed model and conducts a comprehensive stability analysis of these equilibria. The investigation reveals that the system undergoes Hopf bifurcation concerning various model parameters. Notably, when other food sources significantly contribute to the growth of the top predators, the system exhibits stable behavior around the interior equilibrium. Our findings indicate that the dynamic influence of fear plays a robust role in stabilizing the system. Furthermore, a cascading effect within the system, stemming from the fear instigated by top predators, is observed and analyzed. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Bromocriptine is a partial antagonist for D1 dopamine receptors while also serving as a selective agonist on D2 dopamine receptors as a dopamine receptor agonist. Apart from prolactin inhibiting action, bromocriptine has some beneficial effects on the blood pressure, plasma norepinephrine levels and vascular resistance. Dopamine D2 receptor activation of bromocriptine is associated with the antihypertensive effect, which lowers blood pressure via inhibiting sympathetic nerve activity and Na/K ATPase activity. Plasma levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1B and IL-18, chemokine CCL2/ MCP-1/, and the pro-inflammatory hormone prolactin, all of which are elevated and linked to accelerated cardiometabolic illness, were decreased because of bromocriptine therapy. The most common side effects of Bromocriptine use are dizziness, nausea, headache, vomiting and hypotension. Bromocriptine is mainly contraindicated in patients with syncope with hypotension, psychosis, and type I diabetes mellitus.
