Abstract

Genetic associations and path-coefficient analysis was performed for the 15 economic traits affecting capsaicin content (%)in 38 elite genetic stocks/accessions of chili (Capsicum annuum). The capsaicin content was significantly associated withnumber of primary branches per plant and days to first flowering followed by weak positive association with days to fruitinitiation and negative association with fruit weight dry and fruit weight fresh . In path-coefficient analysis, the number ofprimary branches per plant was found to be the premium direct contributor to the capsaicin content followed by fruit length .Fruit diameter exhibited the third highest direct effects. The fruit surface area added to the capsaicin content indirectly viafruit length and fruit weight. Primary branches per plant and days to first flowering emerged as a reliable component inselection criterion in breeding high capsaicin content yielding chili (Capsicum annuum).

Abstract

This document is a correction notice for an article titled "Finite element modeling of effective thermomechanical properties of Al-B4C metal matrix composites" published in the Journal of Materials Science. The correction states that Figures 1, 2a (8vol%), 2a (12vol%), 2b, and 2c in the article were re-used from the authors' previous work without appropriate acknowledgement. The article aims to investigate the influences of thermal residual stresses and material properties on the thermomechanical deformation behavior of Al-B4C composites reinforced with aluminum matrix composites. 47. A calibration procedure for load cells to improve accuracy of mini-lysimeters in monitoring evapotranspiration

Abstract

We used twelve load cells (20 kg capacity) in a mini-lysimeter system to measure evapotranspiration simultaneously from twelve plants growing in separate pots in a glasshouse. A data logger combined with a multiplexer was used to connect all load cells with the full-bridge excitation mode to acquire load-cell signal. Each load cell was calibrated using fixed load within the range of 0–0.8 times the full load capacity of load cells. Performance of all load cells was assessed on the basis of signal settling time, excitation compensation, hysteresis and temperature. Final calibration of load cells included statistical consideration of these effects to allow prediction of lysimeter weights and evapotranspiration over short-time intervals for improved accuracy and sustained performance. Analysis of the costs for the mini-lysimeter system indicates that evapotranspiration can be measured economically at a reasonable accuracy and sufficient resolution with robust method of load-cell calibration.

50. Desktop review of Polyacrylamide use in the Australian cotton industry

Abstract

[Executive Summary]: Polyacrylamide, commonly known as PAM, is a long-chain hydrocarbon of high molecular weight, synthesized from natural gas for a range of industrial and environmental use. In Agriculture, PAM and other polymers have been historically used as a soil conditioner similar to gypsum and lime. The purpose of this review is to establish the extent to which PAM is useful in agricultural application, particularly within the cotton industry in Australia and identify knowledge gaps and make key recommendations for future research, development and extension. Australian and International agricultural and environmental research reviewed in Section 1 shows that anionic PAM of high molecular weight of food grade quality is possibly the best PAM formulation for land and water application because of its high solubility and purity which is capable of providing substantial benefit at extremely low concentration. High purity of PAM ensures that it contains very little impurities (particularly acrylamide, AMD units from which PAM is synthesized) which could be toxic to aquatic organisms and human. Single dose application of anionic PAM at low concentration (in the range of 1-10 ppm) with irrigation water can cause over 50% reduction in runoff and sediment loss. Other associated benefits with this type of application include reduced transport of nutrients, pesticides, weed seeds, pathogens via runoff and sediment, with little off-site impacts. Due to the need for low application rate, PAM application is economically attractive although repeated applications are necessary to derive full, long term benefit. Despite some indication that PAM degrades over time, information on the breakdown products is limited to AMD only. There is also little knowledge available currently that demonstrates how to remove PAM once it is applied to land.
