Abstract

The commercialization of any energy storage technologies requires the development of high mass loading electrode, Higher demands on energy storage device demand high performing hybrid devices combining two or more storage modes in a single system. A battery – supercapacitor hybrid device comprises a battery-type positive electrode and supercapacitor-type electrochemical double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrode and will offer higher power capability than batteries and higher energy storability than supercapacitors. However, the mass-loadings in the two-type of electrodes are to be adjusted for optimum performance. In this work, a flower-shaped NiCo2O4 composite was used as a battery-type electrode while commercial activated carbon was used an EDLC electrode. Both materials were characterized for their chemical structure, physical surface, morphology and electrochemical properties separately. The NiCo2O4//AC hybrid device was fabricated on aluminium foil current collector and studied the effect of varying mass-loading on the electrochemical performance of the device in EmimBF4 ionic liquid electrolyte. The mass loading of the electrode was controlled through altering the coating thicknesses of the electrodes. The largest cell capacitance was ∼140.5 mF, specific energy ∼7.3 Wh/kg, and specific power ∼105 W/kg with a mass loading of 3 mg/cm2. The decreasing trend of absolute capacitance was observed with higher mass-loading; electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements associate it with increased resistance. This study suggest that the mass loading of the electrodes is a critical factor in determining the electrochemical performance of NiCo2O4//AC devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The commercialization of any energy storage technologies requires the development of high mass loading electrode, including that for supercapacitors. However, different from the faradaic bulk reaction in lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors adopted non-faradaic surface charge accumulation mechanism during charge storage. Under such circumstance, high mass loading cannot be directly related to higher energy density for supercapacitor. Here, the effect of mass loading on the electrochemical performance and storage efficiency of the activated carbon symmetry supercapacitor was investigated. The achievable capacitance increases with mass loading at identical current density, from 60.9 mF in 1.8 mg/cm2 to 624.6 mF in 21.2 mg/cm2. However, the specific capacitance and energy density decreased from 33.4 F/g in 1.8 mg/cm2 to 29.5 F/g in 21.2 mg/cm2, attributable to the increase in dead weight from the bulk of the electrode. The results presented here concluded that increasing the capacitance of aqueous electrolyte-based supercapacitor through high mass loading does not contributes positively to the energy density, while widening the working voltage would be a better alternative.
