9. Response of Strain-Gauge-Based Tie Reaction Measurement Circuits under Dynamic Loading and Variable Support Conditions

Abstract

Strain gauges are often used to measure vertical wheel loads in a railroad track. This approach is based on the concept of differential-shear-strain (DSS) measurement: The difference in vertical shear force between two points along a beam equals the magnitude of the resultant of applied vertical forces in between. With a slight modification to the strain-gauge positions and installation of an additional set of strain gauges, this concept can be extended to measure the vertical rail–tie interface reaction forces, thus assessing the tie support conditions. Although the application of DSS measurements for vertical-wheel-load quantification is widely prevalent in the railroad community, the validity of this approach for tie reaction measurement has been relatively unexplored. Conceptually, the approach is similar to the vertical-wheel-load measurement system, with the only difference being the placement of the strain gauges along the rail. Nevertheless, several questions have been raised about how different track and loading configurations can affect the accuracy of such a measurement system. To address some of these concerns and establish this approach as a viable method for tie support condition assessment, a field-validation effort was undertaken. Under the scope of this research effort, the strain-gauge-based DSS measurement system for rail–tie interface reaction-force measurement was evaluated in the field under static as well as dynamic loading. The study showed that the strain-gauge-based measurement approach is as accurate as other conventional methods of tie reaction-force measurement.

Abstract

Introduction: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a life-threatening gastrointestinal disease with high mortality and morbidity. However, scoring systems or prognostic indicators for assessing AP are cumbersome and expensive, and have not proved accurately to predict outcomes. Aim: We conducted a study with the aim of evaluating the predictive accuracy of C-reactive protein (CRP)/albumin and ferritin regarding outcomes in patients with AP. Material and methods: A prospective study was conducted in a tertiary care referral centre in Odisha from March 2020 to April 2021. A total of 116 consecutive patients of AP were enrolled in the study. CTSI, APACHE II, ferritin, and the CRP/albumin ratio were calculated. Results: The mean age of patients was 40.63 ±5.49 years with a male predominance (73%). Alcohol was most common aetiology (46.6%), and the overall mortality was 18%. Mean ferritin and the CRP/albumin ratio were also significantly higher in severe AP as compared to moderately severe AP and mild AP (p < 0.001). The CRP/albumin ratio (AOR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.02-1.56, p = 0.02) was found to be independent predictor of mortality in Cox regression multivariate analysis and had the highest AUC for predicting the severity of acute pancreatitis. Serum ferritin had higher AUC (0.89, 0.83-0.91, p < 0.001) for the development of necrosis in acute pancreatitis, but it failed to be proven as an independent predictor of mortality. Conclusions: CRP/albumin is a simple, cheap, and easily available biomarker predicting the development of severe pancreatitis, and it was found to be an independent predictor of mortality in AP. Abstract

This manuscript presents findings from an ongoing research study at Oklahoma State University studying different factors that affect vertical tie reaction forces in ballasted railroad tracks. A combined approach involving field instrumentation and numerical modeling has been adopted for this purpose. Measurements of tie reactions can indicate the load distribution patterns and quality of vertical support along a track. Locations where tie support conditions are not adequate can develop geometry defects, ultimately leading to component failure. Three different approaches are adopted in this study to measure the forces being transmitted through the rail-tie interface; this is equal to the tie reaction force. The field instrumentation effort validates an alternative method to measure forces at the rail-tie interface using rail-mounted strain gauges. Results from this approach are compared to two other conventional methods of force measurement, i.e. through the use of load cells (LC), and an instrumented tie plate (ITP). A validated 3-dimensional Finite Element (FE) model is used to support the field-observed trends, and explain any observed discrepancy. Parametric analyses using the FE model identify different factors that can contribute to the rail-tie interaction force, thus affecting the instrumentation results. The strain gauge-based approach, using the concept of differential shear strain measurement, has been established as a suitable method for tie reaction force measurement.
