Abstract

This work contextualizes the state of research in the areas of Communication Sciences and Information Sciences and presents new national and international methodological experiences that allow enriching the research experience of groups and lines of research developed in both thematic areas. The intersections between qualitative and quantitative methodologies, cases and ways of approaching research are explored, and new knowledge is provided both from studying the context of the situation and from the actual practices that allow opening doors and consolidating research in emerging areas, such as communication and information. The knowledge transfer carried out in this work is the result of the research work of consolidated research groups that carry out their research financed by public and private bodies of the first order and that are developed in Higher Education centres. The result is a volume directed at researchers and carried out by researchers who are looking for the intersection and collaboration in experiences that may allow the enrichment and progress of investigation.

11. Analyzing Hate Speech Against Women on Instagram

Abstract

The popularization of digital technologies, such as social media, has driven remarkable changes in the way citizens participate in public life. On the one hand, they gave power to social actors, who began to act in a new media environment, with a considerable impact on the political and economic spheres. On the other hand, they laid the material foundations for the dissemination of hate speech against vulnerable groups and minorities. The present investigation has as its main objective to analyze the misogynistic hate narratives that are uttered in social media. For this purpose, a netnographic study was carried out, of the qualitative type, organized in three sequential moments: extraction, exploration/treatment, and content analysis of the data from the platform of the social network Instagram. The data highlighted from 74 profiles aligned with hate speech show, essentially, the presence of 40 publications, largely linked to extreme right-wing cultures with discursive and imagery manifestations of a misogynistic nature, highlighting the use of irony and the ridicule of women. The most offensive dimension of hate speech was measured in the comments of the followers of these publications, present in the form of insult and direct offense, confirming that the digital environment has aggravated hostility and online harassment against women.

22. The Brand as an Example for Sustainability: The Impact of Brand Activism on Employee Pro-Environmental Attitudes.

Abstract

The impact of companies' social strategies, such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) and brand activism, on corporate advantages like economic and reputational gains has been well documented in the literature. However, research becomes scarcer regarding the broader impacts of these social strategies, namely the promotion of attitudes in favor of society and the environment on the part of company stakeholders. Furthermore, there is still little research on the variables that can mediate this impact, particularly at an identity and emotional level. To cover this gap, this article aims to study the impact of environmental brand activism on employee pro-environmental attitudes, and the possible mediating effects of identification with the organization and moral elevation by analyzing the brand activism of a Portuguese retail company. The results showed that environmental brand activism can directly affect the pro-environmental attitudes of employees and have also indirect impacts on the pro-environmental attitudes of this group of stakeholders, but only through the mediating role of identification with the organization, thus contributing to a better perception of the potential of brand activism to promote social change and sustainable development. Abstract

Livestream shopping can potentially contribute to impulse buying because this format's immediacy and interactive nature may induce viewers to make unplanned purchases. As a relatively new concept, livestream shopping is still being explored by retailers and consumers alike. Given its rapid rise in recent years, understanding this phenomenon and its potential is crucial. We applied a two‐study strategy to understand the influencer and environmental characteristics that may affect users' impulse‐buying behavior, adopting a stimulus–organism–response framework in both studies. We applied a partial least squares structural equation model to the gathered data (671 questionnaires), revealing that perceived usefulness influences impulse buying more than perceived enjoyment. This difference is more vivid for more experienced livestream shoppers, who tend to value perceived usefulness under the influence of streamer characteristics. With a qualitative approach, the second study evaluated the performance of a top‐streaming influencer in China to determine whether the survey's most influential variables were adopted during the most successful sale ever. Our findings suggest that endorser style and promotion strategies (scarcity and sales promotions) affect consumer behavior. Abstract

The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence of cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers and the risk of death (by cancer status) among people living with AIDS (PLWA) in Puerto Rico. We used data from the Puerto Rico AIDS Surveillance Program and Central Cancer Registry (1985-2005). Cancers with highest incidence were cervix (299.6/100,000) for women and oral cavity/oropharynx for men (150.0/100,000); the greatest excess of cancer incidence for men (standardized incidence ratio, 86.8) and women (standardized incidence ratio, 52.8) was for anal cancer. PLWA who developed a cancer had decreased survival and increased risk of death compared with those who did not have cancer. Cancer control strategies for PLWA will be essential for improving their disease survival.

Abstract

This article examines how Facebook is shaping the nature of hate speech. The observation field is the Facebook pages of the 18 Portuguese football clubs of the Portuguese League – the main professional competition in the country. Data extraction was performed automatically via Facebook Graph API in the first three months of the 2020/2021 season. The analysed dataset has 5,192 publications and 276,231 fan comments, which registered over 5 million reactions (like, haha, love, sad, wow, etc.). The findings reveal that the volume of hate speech material on Facebook pages has a low incidence. In any case, the most significant comments are racists, xenophobes, and regional antagonisms. Abstract

Lung transplantation is limited by the shortage of suitable donors. Many programs have begun to use extended criteria donors. Donors over 65 years old are rarely reported, especially for young cystic fibrosis recipients. This monocentric study was conducted for cystic fibrosis recipients from January 2005 to December 2019, comparing two cohorts according to lung donor age (<65 years or ≥65 years). The primary objective was to assess the survival rate at 3 years using a Cox multivariable model. Of the 356 lung recipients, 326 had donors under 65 years, and 30 had donors over 65 years. Donors’ characteristics did not differ significantly in terms of sex, time on mechanical ventilation before retrieval, and partial pressure of arterial oxygen/fraction of inspired oxygen ratio. There were no significant differences in post-operative mechanical ventilation duration and incidence of grade 3 primary graft dysfunction between the two groups. At 1, 3, and 5 years, the percentage of predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (p = 0.767) and survival rate did not differ between groups (p = 0.924). The use of lungs from donors over 65 years for cystic fibrosis recipients allows extension of the donor pool without compromising results.
