BackgroundRecent advancements in active assisted living (AAL) technologies allow older adults to age well in place. However, sensing technologies increase the complexity of data collection points, making it difficult for users to consent to data collection. One possible solution for improving transparency in the consent management process is the use of blockchain, an immutable and timestamped ledger. ObjectiveThis study aims to provide a conceptual framework based on technology aimed at mitigating trust issues in the consent management process. MethodsThe consent management process was modeled using established methodologies to obtain a mapping of trust issues. This mapping was then used to develop a conceptual framework based on previous monitoring and surveillance architectures for connected devices. ResultsIn this paper, we present a model that maps trust issues in the informed consent process; a conceptual framework capable of providing all the necessary underlining technologies, components, and functionalities required to develop applications capable of managing the process of informed consent for AAL, powered by blockchain technology to ensure transparency; and a diagram showing an instantiation of the framework with entities comprising the participants in the blockchain network, suggesting possible technologies that can be used. ConclusionsOur conceptual framework provides all the components and technologies that are required to enhance the informed consent process. Blockchain technology can help overcome several privacy challenges and mitigate trust issues that are currently present in the consent management process of data collection involving AAL technologies.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o filme lacrimal e os sintomas de olho seco antes e após a realização da facoemulsificação. Métodos: Participaram deste estudo clínico 51 pacientes diagnosticados com catarata (55% mulheres; 78% brancos; 71,2 ± 6,5 anos de idade; sem uso de colírio lubrificante) que foram submetidos à facoemulsificação em um hospital na cidade de Aparecida (SP). A análise do filme lacrimal foi feita pelo teste de ruptura do filme lacrimal, e os sintomas de olho seco foram avaliados pelo Índice de Doença da Superfície Ocular, ambos antes da cirurgia e 30 e 60 dias de pós-operatório. Resultados: Na análise pré-operatória, 25,5% dos pacientes tinham olho seco pelo critério subjetivo (Índice de Doença da Superfície Ocular ≥ 25%), enquanto a proporção de pacientes com olho seco foi de 92,2% pelo critério objetivo (teste de ruptura do filme lacrimal < 10 segundos). Não houve correlação entre o teste de ruptura do filme lacrimal e o Índice de Doença da Superfície Ocular (r = −0,14; p = 0,33). Não foi observada redução dos sintomas de olho seco (15,9 ± 17,6 versus 12,2 ± 13,2 versus 7,8 ± 11,5; p < 0,001) e nem do tempo de ruptura do filme lacrimal (6,2 ± 2,2 vs. 4,3 ± 2,0 versus 6,9 ± 2,0 segundos; p < 0,001) no pré, 30 e 60 dias após a cirurgia. Conclusão: A facoemulsificação desencadeia sintomas de olho seco e altera os valores do teste de ruptura do filme lacrimal e do Índice de Doença da Superfície Ocular, havendo melhora depois da cirurgia, com o passar dos dias. Observou-se que, após os 60 dias, os sintomas de olho seco avaliados pelo Índice de Doença da Superfície Ocular apresentaram melhora. Em relação ao filme lacrimal, avaliado pelo teste de ruptura do filme lacrimal, observou-se que houve piora estatisticamente significativa aos 30 dias, seguida de melhora no pós-operatório de 60 dias. Os resultados sugerem que a análise clínica do olho seco deve ser realizada por diferentes métodos, preferencialmente objetivos.

This study evaluates the capability of an unconstrained tomographic algorithm to capture 3D water vapor density variability throughout 2017 in Houston, U.S. The algorithm relies solely on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations and does not require an initial guess or other specific constraints regarding water vapor density variability within the tomographic domain. The test domain, featuring 9 km horizontal, 500 m vertical, and 30 min temporal resolutions, yielded remarkable results when compared to data retrieved from the ECMWF Reanalysis v5 (ERA5), regional Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) data, and GNSS-Radio Occultation (RO). For the first time, a time series of Precipitable Water Vapor maps derived from the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique was used to validate the spatially integrated water vapor computed by GNSS tomography. Tomographic results clearly indicate the passage of Hurricane Harvey, with integrated water vapor peaking at 60 kg/m2 and increased humidity at altitudes up to 7.5 km. Our findings suggest that GNSS tomography holds promise as a reliable source of atmospheric water vapor data for various applications. Natural killer (NK) cells include different subsets with diverse effector capacities that are poorly understood in the context of parasitic diseases. Here, we investigated inhibitory and activating receptor expression on NK cells in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and explored their phenotypic and functional heterogeneity based on CD57 and NKG2C expression. The expression of CD57 identified NK cells that accumulated in CL patients and exhibited features of senescence. The CD57+ cells exhibited heightened levels of the activating receptor NKG2C and diminished expression of the inhibitory receptor NKG2A. RNA sequencing analyses based on NKG2C transcriptome have revealed two distinct profiles among CL patients associated with cytotoxic and functional genes. The CD57+NKG2C+ subset accumulated in the blood of patients and presented conspicuous features of senescence, including the expression of markers such as p16, yH2ax, and p38, as well as reduced proliferative capacity. In addition, they positively correlated with the number of days until lesion resolution. This study provides a broad understanding of the NK cell biology during Leishmania infection and reinforces the role of senescent cells in the adverse clinical outcomes of CL. In order to investigate the most extreme conditions in which materials potentially applicable in reusable thermal shields can be operated, ultra-high-temperature ZrB2 ceramics with 20 vol.% MoSi2 were prepared using two different techniques, cold isostatic pressing (CIP) and robocasting (RC, an additive manufacturing technique), followed by consolidation using pressureless spark plasma sintering (SPS). The oxidation behavior of the resulting materials was analyzed in low-pressure dissociated air at three different temperatures, namely 1800, 2000 and 2200 K. Using XRD and surface and cross-section SEM (coupled with EDS), zirconia was found to form at all three temperatures, while silica was only present at 1800 K, with gaseous SiO forming at a higher temperature. The elaboration technique influences the density of the ceramic, and less dense materials undergo deeper oxidation. This investigation suggests that 2000 K is already beyond the maximum temperature threshold at which damage to ceramics is limited by the formation of protective silica.
