Plant growth regulators (PGRs) have become an integral part of agricultural and horticultural practices. Accordingly, there is an increased demand for new and cost-effective products. Nevertheless, the market is limited by insufficient innovation. In this context chemical genomics has gained increasing attention as a powerful approach addressing specific traits. Here is described the successful implementation of a highly specific, sensitive and efficient high throughput screening approach using Arabidopsis as a model. Using a combination of techniques, 10,000 diverse compounds were screened and evaluated for several important plant growth traits including root and leaf growth. The phenotype-based selection allowed the compilation of a collection of putative Arabidopsis growth regulators with a broad range of activities and specificities. A subset was selected for evaluating their bioactivity in agronomically valuable plants. Their validation as growth regulators in commercial species such as tomato, lettuce, carrot, maize and turfgrasses reinforced the success of the screening in Arabidopsis and indicated that small molecules activity can be efficiently translated to commercial species. Therefore, the chemical genomics approach in Arabidopsis is a promising field that can be incorporated in PGR discovery programs and has a great potential to develop new products that can be efficiently used in crops. The new Web generations are influencing the minds and changing the habits of software developers and end users. Users, librarians, and information services professionals can interact more efficiently, creating additional information and content and generating knowledge. This new scenario is also changing the behavior of information providers and users in health sciences libraries. This article reviews the new Web environments and tools that give librarians opportunities to tailor their services better, and gives some examples of the advantages and disadvantages for them and their users. Background: Health authorities, hospitals, commercial enterprises, and mass media all deliver health and medical communication in different forms. With such a vast amount of biomedical and clinical information available, any action to ensure the spread of clinically relevant news items is welcome. Objectives: This paper tries to define a new role for health science librarians in improving medical communication and reporting. Methods: Literature relating to the health and medical reporting is analysed to identify major difficulties encountered by health communicators. Results: There are two areas where health science librarians can develop new roles in health communication: (i) supporting journalists and health communicators in selecting sources and understanding scientific papers, and (ii) directly translating scientific information into news items, supplying a list of products in this direction (i.e. targeted newsletters, media releases, news items). New skills and competencies needed to cope with the new roles are described in detail in a suggested academic curriculum for health communicators. Throughout the world the public is showing increasing interest in medical and scientific subjects and journalists largely spread this information, with an important impact on knowledge and health. Clearly, therefore, the relationship between the journalist and his sources is delicate: freedom and independence of information depend on the independence and truthfulness of the sources.The new “precision journalism” holds that scientific methods should be applied to journalism, so authoritative sources are a common need for journalists and scientists. We therefore compared the individual classifications and methods of assessing of sources in biomedical science and medical journalism to try to extrapolate scientific methods of evaluation to journalism.In journalism and science terms used to classify sources of information show some similarities, but their meanings are different. In science primary and secondary classes of information, for instance, refer to the levels of processing, but in journalism to the official nature of the source itself.Scientists and journalists must both always consult as many sources as possible and check their authoritativeness, reliability, completeness, up-to-dateness and balance. In journalism, however, there are some important differences and limits: too many sources can sometimes diminish the quality of the information. The sources serve a first filter between the event and the journalist, who is not providing the reader with the fact, but with its projection. Journalists have time constraints and lack the objective criteria for searching, the specific background knowledge, and the expertise to fully assess sources.To assist in understanding the wealth of sources of information in journalism, we have prepared a checklist of items and questions. There are at least four fundamental points that a good journalist, like any scientist, should know: how to find the latest information (the sources), how to assess it (the quality and authoritativeness), how to analyse and filter it (selection), how to deal with too many sources of information, sometimes case biased by conflicting interests (balance). In asset management for energy portfolios, quantitative methodologies are typically employed. In Brazil, the NEWAVE computational model is universally used to generate scenarios of hydraulic production and future prices, which result in revenue distributions. These distributions are then used to estimate the portfolio's revenue and assess its risk. Although this is a well-established analysis, it has some shortcomings that are not always considered. The validity of the revenue series constructed by NEWAVE, especially in long-term analysis, is a real problem for agents concerning the acquisition of assets such as power plants. Another issue is the disregard for other objectives that are important for the operationality of the management task and are often ignored, such as operational risk. To address these limitations, this work combines the areas of multicriteria decision making under uncertainty and risk management and presents a methodology for evaluating the acquisition of long-term energy assets, as well as a practical application of the proposed method. Investment alternatives are evaluated in multiple developed scenarios, so it is possible to measure how robust a given option is. By analyzing several scenarios simultaneously, a larger region of uncertainties can be covered, and therefore, decision making becomes more secure. The proposed methodology includes six objectives, designed to address a wider range of stakeholder needs. This approach is applied to an illustrative portfolio, producing results that allow for a more comprehensive understanding of decision attributes. Therefore, this work not only addresses the current limitations in the field but also adds an original contribution by considering simultaneously several scenarios and integrating multiple objectives in a robust and secure decision-making framework. Salinity is a severe abiotic stress that affects irrigated croplands. Jasmonate (JA) is an essential hormone involved in plant defense against herbivory and in responses to abiotic stress. However, the relationship between the salt stress response and the JA pathway in Arabidopsis thaliana is not well understood at molecular and cellular levels. In this work we investigated the activation of JA signaling by NaCl and its effect on primary root growth. We found that JA-responsive JAZ genes were up-regulated by salt stress in a COI1-dependent manner in the roots. Using a JA-Ile sensor we demonstrated that activation of JA signaling by salt stress occurs in the meristematic zone and stele of the differentiation zone and that this activation was dependent on JAR1 and proteasome functions. Another finding is that the elongation zone (EZ) and its cortical cells were significantly longer in JA-related mutants (AOS, COI1, JAZ3 and MYC2/3/4 genes) compared with wild-type plants under salt stress, revealing the participation of the canonical JA signaling pathway. Noteworthy, osmotic stress – a component of salt stress – inhibited cell elongation in the EZ in a COI1-dependent manner. We propose that salt stress triggers activation of the JA signaling pathway followed by inhibition of cell elongation in the EZ. We have shown that salt-inhibited root growth partially involves the jasmonate signaling pathway in Arabidopsis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports on a project that provides service for general practitioners concerning health and medical news published in the lay press. The project involves scanning the top newspapers and their medical supplements, and the main women's magazines every day. The topics are selected for their importance and clinical implications.

The supervised implementation of psychophysiological recovery breaks and physical exercise in the workplace can be motivational factors for employees to be productive and remain for a longer time at work. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether ergonomic conditions (including rest breaks) and exercise programs can reduce fatigue before, during and after work hours. Twenty participants, age range: 31- 48 years, were divided into four groups: 1) Exercise with rest breaks (n=5); 2) Exercise without rest breaks (n=5); 3) No exercise with rest breaks (n=5), 4). No exercise without rest breaks (n=5). The exercise group performed physical training, including resistance exercises, stretching and aerobic exercises for 4 weeks. The rest break was performed for 10 minutes and both exercise and rest were developed in the work place. To determine the fatigue effects on each intervention group, surveys with a 10-point Borg scale were used. In general, participants that conducted exercise program (1 and 2) showed less fatigue compared with those that did not perform the program (3 and 4), principally in the times during and after work hours (P < 0.03). This pilot study demonstrated that exercise programs may help to reduce fatigue during and after work hours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
