6. 'Dichos' & Diabetes: Literary Devices Used by Mexican-Origin Males to Share Their Perspectives on Type 2 Diabetes and Health

Abstract

The medical literature emphasizes the increasing role of cultural considerations for improved health education among Latinos. Research in Latino culture reveal the inherent function of figurative language devices, such as "dichos," in individual expression and cultural norm transmission. Increased understanding of "dichos" may provide unique insight into the dynamic relationship between collective cultural knowledge and individual health perceptions. "Dichos" related to health and diabetes among Latinos, however, remain entirely unexplored. The present study represents a secondary qualitative analysis of the perspectives on diabetes and health of Mexican-origin males that identified inadequate understanding of disease processes and cultural customs as barriers to health. Spanish language transcriptions from the original study were content analyzed by two Latino researchers fluent in English and Spanish to identify the use of "dichos" by the participants to convey their perspectives on health and diabetes. The results reveal four major categorizations of "dichos:" religiosity, familism, formation, and individuality. Findings from this study provide insight on the utility of "dichos" for the identification of health-related perspectives. "Dichos" may also serve clinicians and health educators as culturally relevant vehicles of communication for encouraging and transformative health discussions. Future diabetes interventions should incorporate "dichos" to explore quantifiable outcomes of culturally tailored programs.

18. On the geometry pervading One Particle States

Abstract

In this paper, a way is given to obtain explicitly the representations of the Poincar\'e group as can be prescribed by Geometric Quantization. Thus one obtains some forms of the Space of Quantum States of the different relativistic free particles, and I give explicitly these spaces and the corresponding operators for the usually accepted as realistic physical particles. The general description of the massless particles I obtain, is given in terms of solutions of Penrose equations. In the case of Photon, I also give other descriptions, one in terms of the Electromagnetic Field. Since the results are derived from Geometric Quantization, they are related to certain Contact and Symplectic manifols, that I study in detail. The symplectic manifold must be interpreted, according with Souriau, as the Movement Space of the corresponding classical particle, and that leads to propose one of the spaces I use as the State Space of the corresponding classical particle. These spaces are also described in each case.

25. Emergence of cardiac function and cell types during early embryogenesis

Abstract

The heart is the first organ to form and function during embryonic development. Over the past few years, research on cardiac development has focused on uncovering the genetic mechanism controlling cardiac differentiation and clarifying the embryonic origin of the different cardiac lineages. The study of the physiological mechanisms behind cardiac function has proven instrumental for our understanding of heart disease and the interplay between different cardiac cells. However, there is not an extensive body of literature on the role of physiology on early embryonic development, especially on cardiac development. In this thesis, I present my work on the early stages of heart development, focusing on the events occurring from the formation of the cardiac crescent to the linear heart tube stage. This thesis is divided in 3 result chapters. In the first result chapter (chapter 3), I present the methods I developed to perform live imaging of mouse embryos, including calcium imaging, and to extract quantitative information. On the second result chapter (chapter 4), I described the work I performed investigating the physiological mechanisms of early heart development, their role in cardiac differentiation, and a detailed single-cell RNA sequencing analysis of early heart development. On the last result chapter (chapter 5), I explore preliminary data on a potential contribution of endodermal cells to the formation of the heart. The work presented here has led to the discovery of Spontaneous Asynchronous Calcium Oscillations (SACOs) in the early cardiac mesoderm and a key role for NCX1 in regulating these oscillations and cardiac differentiation. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis suggests a potential role for Naca and Fbxo32 in regulating early cardiac function. I have also identified potential new markers for both the First and Second Heart Field. Lastly, I found evidence that the endoderm may be contributing to the Second Heart Field, although the function of these cells is still unclear.

Abstract

The scientific journal has been greatly affected by the advent of its online digital accessibility. It is the priority publication medium for scientific communication, one of the document categories where changes in the electronic format uncover an extensive action, different from traditional practices. The extensive communication -- a.k.a. the emblematic model of network interactions -- comes as much in new forms of document production, as well as in the organization of the technical landscape in which scientific information adapts to flexible and unstable forms. Gradual changes (in support, format, content, and publication type) were observed in 400 online electronic journals, being all by main international publishers, as made available at CAPES portal (www.periodicos.capes.gov.br). The portal offers access to the complete text of a lot of publication, encyclopedias, databases, etc., supplied by editors and international distributors. In all the platforms we can find specific search tools that make possible bibliographical researches, alert services and other products and services, as well as information of technical and scientific interest. A data collection was assembled through a checklist for 70 variables, and the results were inserted in a spreadsheet for an initial analysis. Afterwards, data were cross-examined through the use of the SPSS software for statistical analysis. This investigation has shown that the new format stand out through the insertion of tools and services, strengthening extensive communication by means of interactivity, hypertextuality, and hypermediation, a. k. a., the main distinctive features of the electronic format. After technological resources mature the online format, they establish a new perception of the journal contents. The variables were grouped according to their pertinence to the studied aspects in the electronic format, and were expressed in percentage ratios. The results display the dependence of the electronic on the printed format. By combining all the variables once again to measure the levels of interactivity, hypertextuality, and hypermediation, journals were grouped by platform (i. e., the online publishing base as, for example, Scielo, Science Direct, Gale, OVID, etc.) to test for interactivity, hypertextuality, and hypermediation levels among platforms. The descriptive measures of indexes were first calculated: average, standard deviation, minimum value, maximum value, percentage ratios -- among other data -- to confirm level variations of each one of the characteristics among the platforms. Observing the grouping by platform, the results have shown evidence that a direct relationship (in other words, the most interactive groups are not necessarily the most hypertextual or hypermediatic ones) does not exist among the three characteristic features of the online electronic format. The online journal is using a communication in a differentiated dimension from the traditional system. The performance of the journals was also evaluated comparatively among platforms. At this stage in the evolution of electronic publishing, serious experimentation is needed. Models like CAPES Portal should be developed, allowing for continued expansion and enhancement of scholarly communication.

Abstract

This paper describes technical and educational issues related to the development of SIMMPATICO, a multimedia tool for the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language. The first section presents an overview of the motivation for the project. Package organization is discussed in the second section, including the linguistic approach and its methodological organization, and the hypermedia structure and interface/icon study. The third section covers technical aspects, including hardware requirements, sound, image, computer-generated animation and images, and video. The conclusion addresses evaluation methods and plans for the prototype testing of the system, as well as the goal of developing an online version of the system and anticipated problems related to this goal. Three figures illustrate: hypermedia relations; the background image, dialogue icons, and video control buttons; and SIMMPATICO's font and main character. A table presents the video production chain.
