- Abstract
This study evaluated the impact of differential sowing windows and improved weed management strategies on weed dynamics, productivity, and economic viability of direct drum seeded rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the temperate agro-ecosystem of Kashmir. A two-year field experiment was conducted utilizing a split-plot design with two sowing dates (May 10 and June 3) as main plots and six weed management practices as sub-plots. The earlier sowing date (May 10) resulted in significantly enhanced leaf area index, crop growth rate, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, and grain and straw yields compared to the later sowing (June 3). Among weed management treatments, four mechanized conoweedings (equivalent to weed-free conditions) and sequential application of bensulfuron methyl + pretilachlor (60 and 600 g a.i. ha
-1 ) as pre-emergence followed by 2,4-D (0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 ) as post-emergence demonstrated superior efficacy in weed suppression and augmentation of crop growth parameters and yield attributes. These treatments also exhibited the lowest weed index and highest benefit-cost ratio. The May 10 sowing, coupled with efficacious weed control measures, significantly reduced weed density and biomass while concomitantly improving nutrient uptake and economic returns. The results indicate that adopting a May 10 sowing date for direct seeded rice, in conjunction with either four conoweedings or the aforementioned sequential herbicide application, can optimize agronomic productivity and economic profitability under the temperate conditions of Kashmir. 4. Application of solid waste materials in cold bitumen emulsion mixtures for cleaner pavement industry: a comprehensive review.

- Abstract
There is a global concern with continuous waste production, and efforts are underway to use these wastes in the construction sector. The negative effects of excessive waste production and the use of virgin materials and energy in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) construction are challenging and require attention. The right step towards developing resilient road infrastructure is using cold bitumen emulsion mixtures (CBEMs), a cold mix asphalt (CMA). A long-term fix to issues with waste generation and the creation of flexible pavements with HMA can be found by incorporating wastes into CMA. This work reviews the utilization of numerous wastes from different sectors (agricultural, industrial, construction and demolition, and municipal) that are well-known but underutilized and could be used as potential fillers in cold asphalt mixtures. Focus is given to the critical analysis of wastes' physiochemical characteristics and how these affected the effectiveness of mixtures against primary distresses like stability, stiffness, rutting, cracking, fatigue, and moisture susceptibility. Almost all waste materials incorporation reported enhancement in the mechanical performance of CBEM mixes concerning conventional CBEM mixes. The paper sums up the impact on various mechanical properties of CBEM mixes utilizing waste material filler, presents research gaps and a way forward to inspire researchers, and serves as a guideline for using waste materials as fillers in CBEM mixes. 5. Road traffic noise pollution and prevalence of ischemic heart disease: modelling potential association and abatement strategies in noise-exposed areas.

- Abstract
In many developing countries with surging vehicular traffic and inadequate traffic management, excessive road traffic noise exposure poses substantial health concerns, linked to increased stress, insomnia and other metabolic disorders. This study aims to assess the linkage between sociodemographic factors, traffic noise levels in residential areas and health effects using a cross-sectional study analyzing respondents' perceptions and reports. Noise levels were measured at 57 locations in Srinagar, India, using noise level meter. Sound PLAN software was employed to generate noise contour maps, enabling the visualization of noise monitoring locations and facilitating the assessment of noise levels along routes in proximity to residential areas. Correlation analysis showed a strong linear relationship between field-measured and modelled noise (r
2 = 0.88). Further, a questionnaire-based survey was carried out near the sampling points to evaluate the association of ischemic heart disease with traffic noise. Residents exposed to noise levels (Lden > 60 dB(A)) were found to have a 2.24 times higher odds ratio. Compared to females, males reported a 16% higher prevalence of the disease. Multi-faceted policy strategies involving noise mapping initiatives, source noise standards, traffic flow urban mobility optimization, smart city initiatives and stringent litigatory measures could significantly reduce its detrimental impact on public health. - Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma is currently the most common malignancy of the liver. It typically occurs due to a series of oncogenic mutations that lead to aberrant cell replication. Most commonly, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurs as a result of pre-occurring liver diseases, such as hepatitis and cirrhosis. Given its aggressive nature and poor prognosis, the early screening and diagnosis of HCC are crucial. However, due to its plethora of underlying risk factors and pathophysiologies, patient presentation often varies in the early stages, with many patients presenting with few, if any, specific symptoms in the early stages. Conventionally, screening and diagnosis are performed through radiological examination, with diagnosis confirmed by biopsy. Imaging modalities tend to be limited by their requirement of large, expensive equipment; time-consuming operation; and a lack of accurate diagnosis, whereas a biopsy's invasive nature makes it unappealing for repetitive use. Recently, biosensors have gained attention for their potential to detect numerous conditions rapidly, cheaply, accurately, and without complex equipment and training. Through their sensing platforms, they aim to detect various biomarkers, such as nucleic acids, proteins, and even whole cells extracted by a liquid biopsy. Numerous biosensors have been developed that may detect HCC in its early stages. We discuss the recent updates in biosensing technology, highlighting its competitive potential compared to conventional methodology and its prospects as a tool for screening and diagnosis.

- Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is an abnormal proliferation of cells within the colon and rectum, leading to the formation of polyps and disruption of mucosal functions. The disease development is influenced by a combination of factors, including inflammation, exposure to environmental mutagens, genetic alterations, and impairment in signaling pathways. Traditional treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are often used but have limitations, including poor solubility and permeability, treatment resistance, side effects, and post-surgery issues. Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS) have emerged as a superior alternative, offering enhanced drug solubility, precision in targeting cancer cells, and regulated drug release. Thereby addressing the shortcomings of conventional therapies and showing promise for more effective CRC management. The present review sheds light on the pathogenesis, signaling pathways, biomarkers, conventional treatments, need for NDDS, and application of NDDS against CRC. - Abstract
Hepatic cancer is widely regarded as the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Despite recent advances in treatment options, the prognosis of liver cancer remains poor. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop more representative in vitro models of liver cancer for pathophysiology and drug screening studies. Fortunately, an exciting new development for generating liver models in recent years has been the advent of organoid technology. Organoid models hold huge potential as an in vitro research tool because they can recapitulate the spatial architecture of primary liver cancers and maintain the molecular and functional variations of the native tissue counterparts during long-term culture in vitro. This review provides a comprehensive overview and discussion of the establishment and application of liver organoid models in vitro. Bioengineering strategies used to construct organoid models are also discussed. In addition, the clinical potential and other relevant applications of liver organoid models in different functional states are explored. In the end, this review discusses current limitations and future prospects to encourage further development.

- Abstract
In the present study, a systematic literature review (SLR) is conducted to collect, compile, and summarize the findings of previous studies in a meaningful and systematic way. This review focuses on the ideal blending ratios, mixing parameters, and the physical, thermal, and rheological performance of waste plastic-modified asphalt. It highlights the most significant research results about the challenges like phase separation, low-temperature performance, and workability for waste plastic-modified asphalt and progress in this domain. The results point out that the use of chemical and physical additives can help in the reduction of phase separation. Furthermore, this paper debates the aging characteristics and it was seen that the integration of waste plastic in asphalt has shown to slow down the aging process of the binder. The review article put forward details of various field projects across the globe utilizing waste plastic. The review concludes by presenting key findings, identifying research gaps, and suggesting future directions to advance the knowledge and to fully comprehend the possible application of waste plastic-modified bitumen in sustainable road construction., (© 2024. 10. MRI-Based Effective Ensemble Frameworks for Predicting Human Brain Tumor.

- Abstract
The diagnosis of brain tumors at an early stage is an exigent task for radiologists. Untreated patients rarely survive more than six months. It is a potential cause of mortality that can occur very quickly. Because of this, the early and effective diagnosis of brain tumors requires the use of an automated method. This study aims at the early detection of brain tumors using brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data and efficient learning paradigms. In visual feature extraction, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have achieved significant breakthroughs. The study involves features extraction by deep convolutional layers for the efficient classification of brain tumor victims from the normal group. The deep convolutional neural network was implemented to extract features that represent the image more comprehensively for model training. Using deep convolutional features helps to increase the precision of tumor and non-tumor patient classifications. In this paper, we experimented with five machine learnings (ML) to heighten the understanding and enhance the scope and significance of brain tumor classification. Further, we proposed an ensemble of three high-performing individual ML models, namely Extreme Gradient Boosting, Ada-Boost, and Random Forest (XG-Ada-RF), to derive binary class classification output for detecting brain tumors in images. The proposed voting classifier, along with convoluted features, produced results that showed the highest accuracy of 95.9% for tumor and 94.9% for normal. 11. Influence of Sowing Time and Weed Management Practices on the Performance and Weed Dynamics of Direct Drum Seeded Rice.

Direct drum seeding has emerged as a viable and alternate substitute to the current transplanted rice to address constraints of labor and water scarcity as well as rising cultivation costs. However, heavy weed infestation is the main biological factor leading to immense yield loss, which requires immediate attention. Therefore, adoption of efficient weed management practice is critical for the success and widespread adoption of direct seeded rice. In this regard, an experiment was laid out at the Faculty of Agriculture, Wadura, SKUAST of Kashmir, India, in Kharif seasons of 2018 and 2019 to assess the efficiency of direct seeded rice (DSR) under two sowing dates (D
1 : 10th May and D2 : 3rd June) and six weed management strategies (W1 : weedy check (untreated check), W2 : four mechanized conoweedings at 15, 30, 45, and 60 DAS (days after sowing), equivalent to weed free (four conoweedings, equivalent to weed free), W3 : bensulfuron-methyl + pretilachlor @ 60 and 600 g a.i. ha-1 as pre-emergence (BSM + pretilachlor, PE), W4 : oxyfluorfen @ 750 g a.i. ha-1 as pre-emergence (oxyfluorfen, PE), W5 : bensulfuron-methyl + pretilachlor @ 60 and 600 g a.i. ha-1 as pre-emergence followed by 2,4-D @ 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 as post-emergence (30-35 DAS) (BSM + pretilachlor PE fb 2,4-D PoE), and W6 : oxyfluorfen @ 750 g a.i. ha-1 as pre-emergence followed by 2,4-D @ 0.75 kg a.i. ha-1 as post-emergence (30-35 DAS) (oxyfluorfen PE fb 2,4-D PoE) on growth characteristics, productivity, weed infestation, and nutrient dynamics. The pooled results showed that 10th May sowing recorded significantly higher values of growth characteristics viz. plant height, dry matter production, tiller count, and yield characteristics, including panicle weight, panicle length, filled grains per panicle, and test weight, as compared to delayed sowing (3rd June). Earlier sowing (10th May) produced significantly higher grain yield (7.33 t ha-1 ) and straw yield (8.99 t ha-1 ) when compared to the delayed sowing (3rd June) which produced a grain yield of 6.08 t ha-1 and straw yield of 7.93 t ha-1 . Among weed management strategies, four mechanized conoweeding at 15, 30, 45, and 60 DAS resulted in enhanced growth, yield characteristics, and yield but was statistically similar to bensulfuron-methyl (BSM) + pretilachlor PE fb 2,4-D post-emergence (PoE). Delayed sowing (3rd June; D2 ) recorded significantly higher weed density and dry-weed biomass as compared to earlier sowing (10th May; D1 ). Among the herbicides tested, sequential application of BSM + pretilachlor PE fb 2,4-D PoE proved an efficient weed management practice with a significantly reduced population and dry weight of weeds. 12. Deciphering the response of thirteen apple cultivars for growth, fruit morphology and fruit physico-chemical attributes during different years.

Apple cultivation is one of the most significant means of subsistence in the Kashmir region of the northwestern Himalayas. It is considered as the backbone of the region's economy. Apple cultivation in the region is dominated by a late maturing cultivar "Red Delicious" which usually on maturity causes glut in the market. In order to bring new cultivars in the cultivation, and to expand the maturity season, it is necessary to evaluate the new cultivars on fruit physico-chemical attributes which ultimately decide the market rates before recommending to farmers for cultivars adoption. Therefore, the current study was carried out to evaluate thirteen apple cultivars on physico-chemical attributes over two years, 2017 and 2018 under agro-climatic conditions of Kashmir region The results revealed that cultivars differed significantly in terms of physico-chemical properties. Cultivars with the highest and lowest values for initial fruit set, fruit drop, final fruit retention, and fruit firmness in 2017 did not follow the same trend in 2018. During 2017 and 2018, cultivar Mollie's Delicious possessed the highest fruit length (72.39 mm and 81.45 mm), fruit diameter (81.18 mm and 84.14 mm), and fruit weight (205.85 g and 247.16 g), whereas cultivar Baleman's Cider had the lowest values (50.76 mm and 52.83 mm, 60.10 mm and 62.08 mm, and 71.46 g and 86.94 g), respectively. The harvesting dates were quite spread out during both years of study. Cultivar Mollie's Delicious was harvested the earliest in both years, on August 5th, 2017 and August 8th, 2018. Cultivar Fuji Zehn Aztec was the last cultivar harvested in 2017 on October 2 and in 2018 on October 5. The maximum number of seeds per fruit was noticed in the cultivar Mollie's Delicious (8.34 and 8.71) during both 2017 and 2018, respectively. Cultivar Starkrimson had the fewest seeds per fruit in 2017 (7.11) and 2018 (7.42). Cultivar Baleman's Cider had the highest acidity in 2017 (0.63%) and 2018 (0.52%). In both 2017 (0.25%) and 2018 (0.23%), the Adam's Pearmain cultivar was the least acidic. Cultivar Allington Pippin (16.13 °Brix) and Red Gold (16.73 °Brix) had the highest TSS in 2017 and 2018, respectively, whereas Vance Delicious (12.30 °Brix) and Top Red (10.78 °Brix) had the lowest TSS in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The cultivars Mollie's Delicious and Red Gold had the highest total sugars (11.33 and 11.40%) in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Cultivar Baleman's Cider had the lowest total sugars (9.82%) in 2017 while Top Red (9.78%) in 2018. The cultivar Vance Delicious had the highest ratio of leaves to fruits in 2017 (55.44) and for Shalimar Apple-2 in 2018 (49.65). In 2017, cultivars Fuji Zehn Aztec (29.26) and Silver Spur (24.51), had the fewest leaves per fruit. The highest leaf chlorophyll content was recorded in cultivar Shireen (3.50 and 3.57 mg g
-1 fresh weight) during the years 2017 and 2018, respectively. Cultivar Baleman's Cider had the lowest leaf chlorophyll content (2.15 mg g-1 fresh weight) during 2017, while cultivar Allington Pippin (2.09 mg g-1 fresh weight) had the lowest leaf chlorophyll content in 2018. The cultivars Fuji Zehn Aztec, with a yield efficiency of 0.78 kg/cm2 and Silver Spur with a yield efficiency of 1.14 kg/cm2 were the most yield efficient during the years 2017 and 2018, respectively. Cultivar Shalimar Apple-2 was least performing with yield efficiencies of 0.05 and 0.07 kg/cm2 during 2017 and 2018, respectively.The findings suggest that cultivar Mollie's Delicious commercially matures first and has the highest fruit length, diameter, and weight; hence, it can be a good option for cultivation so as to fetch the maximum price in the market when other cultivars are still maturing. 13. A study on the impact of road traffic noise exposure on work efficiency of housewives.

- Abstract
Housewives are individuals who take on the caregiving role in the family in virtually every society and while discharging their duties experience serious psychological difficulties due to external environmental pollutants like air, noise, etc., which influences their efficiency of performing household activities. This study hypothesizes a causal association between perception of traffic noise and the reduction in performance of housewives in their daily household activities. A simple mediation model was utilized for the study with traffic noise perception as the exposure variable. The sensitivity to traffic noise, annoyance caused due to traffic noise, and the effect of traffic noise on housewives were evaluated using questionnaire survey. Of the respondents, 57.33% reported high level of traffic noise perception, while 65.81% reported high annoyance due to traffic noise perception. Of the respondents, 88.69% reported higher levels of agreement with regard to negative effect of traffic noise on their household activities. The results supported the hypothesis with respondents belonging to high and moderate noise perception groups reporting a higher reduction in performance as compared to those belonging to the low noise perception group at higher values of sensitivity. There was no significant direct effect among those who perceived traffic noise as high and moderate. However, the indirect path revealed that there was a significantly higher reduction in performance among those belonging to the high and moderate noise perception group as compared to those belonging to the low noise perception group while those who perceived traffic noise as high and moderate did not differ significantly only at higher levels of sensitivity. Using OGRS computational tool, a sensitivity value of 5.586 was identified as the Johnson-Neyman boundary of significance for the direct effect. The results from the study highlight the need for including environmental noise related regulations with regard to residential structures by the concerned authorities and also the need for undertaking more rigorous studies by health authorities and organizations so that the effects are minimized if not eliminated completely., (© 2023. 14. Clinical Characterization and Outcomes of Patients with Hypercreatinemia Affected by COVID-19.

- Abstract
The present study evaluated the clinical presentation and outcome of COVID-19 patients with underlying hypercreatinemia at the time of hospitalization. A retrospective observational study was conducted from the 23rd of March 2020 to the 15th of April 2021 in 1668 patients confirmed positive for COVID-19 in the Chest Disease Hospital in Srinagar, India. The results of the present study revealed that out of 1668 patients, 339 with hypercreatinemia had significantly higher rates of admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), severe manifestations of the disease, need for mechanical ventilation, and all-cause mortality. Multivariable analysis revealed that age, elevated creatinine concentrations, IL-1, D-Dimer, and Hs-Crp were independent risk factors for in-hospital mortality. After adjusted analysis, the association of creatinine levels remained strongly predictive of all-cause, in-hospital mortality (HR-5.34; CI-4.89-8.17; p ≤ 0.001). The amelioration of kidney function may be an effective method for achieving creatinemic targets and, henceforth, might be beneficial for improving outcomes in patients with COVID-19.

- Abstract
The generation of waste materials is a global concern and attempts are being made to utilize these wastes in the construction industry. The development of road infrastructure everywhere is going at a fast pace which increases the environmental degradation, fossil fuel consumption, global warming, and depletion of natural materials because of hot mix asphalt (HMA) usage. The detrimental effects of generation of waste in large quantities at a global scale and virgin material/energy consumption in HMA construction are of prime concern and need to be addressed. The construction/maintenance of pavement must be environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. Use of cold bitumen emulsion mixtures (CBEMs), a type of cold mix asphalt (CMA), is a way forward for development of sustainable road infrastructure. The incorporation of wastes in CMA can be a sustainable solution to problems linked to waste generation and development of flexible pavements with HMA. This work summarizes the staging evaluation of CBEMs incorporated with waste glass (WG) and fly ash (FA) utilizing mechanical characteristics, water sensitivity and environmental impact, critical gaps in the literature, and recommendations to address those gaps. A detailed analysis on CBEMs using WG as a replacement of fine aggregate showed comparable stability/stiffness and multifold resistance to rutting than HMA. Fly ash filler in CBEMs reported extraordinary increase in stability, stiffness, rutting resistance, and water sensitivity than reference CBEM/HMA. The focus of the research area should continue on the exploration of waste materials for use in CBEMs to achieve a better environment for society and to promote sustainability in the pavement industry., (© 2023. - Abstract
The potential of the nocturnal traffic noise to affect the quality and the quantity of sleep makes it a serious threat to public health. The present study is an attempt to provide insights into the ways through which nocturnal traffic noise causes insomnia. A total of 4525 respondents participated in the study. Modelled nocturnal noise levels were used, and the assessment of insomnia-related symptoms was done using the Jenkins sleep problem scale. A directed acyclic graph was used to obtain the minimum set of confounders that need to be adjusted for obtaining unbiased estimates. DASS-21 item scale was used to evaluate the mental health of respondents. The study reported significant associations between traffic noise exposure and all insomnia-related symptoms. For the total study population, the highest risk occurred for difficulty in falling asleep symptom (OR = 1.45; 95% CI = 1.01 - 2.07). Based on the sensitivity analysis, respondents with bedrooms facing the road were found to have higher risks as compared to the overall sample with the highest risks occurring for difficulty in maintaining the sleep symptom (OR = 1.65; 95% CI = 1.08 - 2.51). Severity levels of mental disorders showed an increasing trend with the increasing noise levels. Females were found to have a higher risk as compared to males (OR = 1.75; 95% CI = 1.14 - 2.69). No significant association was found between traffic noise exposure and sleep medication usage. Future research on large populations can help in minimizing the impacts of nocturnal noise on public health., (© 2021. 17. Implications of variable environments on phenology of apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) in Northwestern Himalayan region.

Apple phenology is greatly influenced by temperature. For quality apple production in the orchards, knowledge of the real timing of phenological stages is essential for scientific management decisions. In the Kashmir region, the year 2017 had a normal weather phenomenon, whereas the year 2018 had an erratic weather phenomenon wherein unusually high temperatures prevailed in the winter months and may be a clear sign of climate change effect. Due to this higher temperature in winter months of the year 2018 before bud break, earliness of phenological stages happened as compared to the year 2017, viz. silver tip stage by 5.67 days, green tip stage by 6.61 days, pink bud stage by 10.09 days, initial bloom by 10.43 days, full bloom by 9.70 days, and petal fall by 8.00 days. The flowering duration was overall recorded 2.43 days more in 2018 as compared to that in 2017. Due to the earliness of phenological stages in 2018, all twenty-five cultivars of the apple remained at high risk of spring frost and scientific apple orchard interventions were badly hit as growers were surprised and unprepared. The information generated will be very useful for growers, students, researchers, policy makers, and all the concerned stakeholders to understand how apple phenology responds to normal and extreme erratic weather conditions and may happen more frequently in the future due to climate change., (© 2022. The present cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the risk factors for traffic noise-induced annoyance and also assess the awareness levels among the exposed population concerning the health impacts caused by traffic noise. Field measurements were made to validate the application of the standard noise models, which were later used to present the acoustical environment and assess the exposure level around a super-speciality hospital surrounded by a residential zone. Results from the noise maps and façade maps revealed that the area was exposed to noise levels exceeding the upper safe limits by more than 10 dB(A). The effect of exposure in the form of annoyance and the awareness level were evaluated using a questionnaire survey in a sample of 565 residents. Attention questions were incorporated in the questionnaire, and the awareness level was evaluated using the mean awareness index score. Respondents living in noisy areas were having a higher risk for annoyance as compared to those living in quiet areas (OR = 4.06; 95% CI = 2.79-5.88). Reporting poor sleep quality, being sensitive to noise, and noise perception at home were the significant risk factors for annoyance. Most of the respondents were classified as having no/little awareness about serious health ailments caused by traffic noise. Lower awareness levels, despite a higher literacy rate and a higher percentage of the young population, imply that there is a need for undertaking mass awareness programmes so that the impacts can be reduced to a minimum, if not eliminated., (© 2021. Epidemiological studies have established that noise from transportation sources exceeding the safe limits elevates the risk for cardiovascular diseases. The results however have remained heterogeneous. The present study was conducted to investigate the association between road traffic noise exposure and prevalence of coronary artery disease besides sub-group analysis was performed for identifying the most susceptible population. Traffic noise exposure was measured using the L
den metric in both continuous and categorical forms. A cross-sectional study was performed and information about sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health-related factors was collected. Noise level < 60 dB(A) representing the quiet areas was used as the reference group. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed to estimate the odds for self-reported coronary artery disease concerning road traffic noise after adjusting for confounding variables. The residents living in noisy areas were found to have a 2.25 times higher risk per 5 dB(A) increment in the noise levels (95% CI = 1.38 to 3.67). Males were at a higher risk of CAD (OR = 2.61; 95% CI = 1.84 to 3.72) as compared to females (OR = 2.07; 95% CI = 1.37-3.13). The subgroup analysis revealed that being sensitive to noise, belonging to a higher age group, reporting higher stress levels, and poor sleep quality were associated with higher risk. The study also provides evidence that exposure to noise levels greater than 60 dB(A) is associated with the prevalence of coronary artery disease in adults., (© 2021. 20. Modelling road traffic Noise under heterogeneous traffic conditions using the graph-theoretic approach.

- Abstract
A traffic noise system involves several subsystems like road traffic subsystem, human subsystem, environment subsystem, traffic network subsystem, and urban prosperity subsystem. The study's main aim was to develop road traffic noise models using a graph theory approach involving the parameters related to road traffic subsystem. The road traffic subsystem variables selected for the modeling purposes included vehicular speed, traffic volume, carriageway width, number of heavy vehicles, and number of honking events. The interaction of the selected variables considered in the form of permanent noise function is given in the matrix form. Eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors are calculated for removing any human judgmental error. The permanent noise function matrix was then updated using the eigenvectors, which was ultimately utilized for obtaining the permanent noise index. Data regarding the selected variables were collected for three months, and the noise parameters included in the study were equivalent noise level (L
eq,1h ), maximum noise level (L10,1h ), and background noise level (L90,1h ). A logarithmic transformation was applied to the permanent noise index and linear regression models were developed for Leq,1h , L90,1h , and L10,1h respectively. The models were validated using the data collected from the same locations for nine months. The models were found to provide satisfactory results, although the results were somewhat overestimated. The method can prove beneficial for estimating future noise levels, given the expected changes in values for the independent variables considered in the study., (© 2021. Giant ascending aortic aneurysm (AscAA >10 cm) is an uncommon entity with a variable presentation. The size of the aneurysm, rapid expansion, and calcification are associated with an increased risk of rupture. Atherosclerosis is the most common etiology of aortic aneurysm in the elderly population. Multimodality imaging can be wisely used for diagnosis, risk stratification, and follow-up. We herein report a case of successfully repaired giant calcified AscAA with a maximum diameter of 10 cm. 22. Maintaining efficient logistics and supply chain management operations during and after coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic: learning from the past experiences.

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) forced the governing bodies across the world to ban all kinds of travel involving the movement of people. However, the policymakers have been working hard to mobilize the movement of essential goods and services considering its importance in containing the pandemic. It signifies how important the establishment and maintenance of logistics and supply chain management (LSCM) operations are, both during the containment and the successive periods. Motivated with the paramount importance of LSCM operations during the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) across the globe, this paper critically reviews the existing literature closely related to it. The main aim is to identify and enhance the understanding of the logistical characteristics that play a vital role during pandemics. The selection of the literature was done using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) methodology. The classification of the selected literature was done using a tripartite framework. Results show that researchers have focused mostly on "Post-event" (48.24%) management of logistical operations followed by the "Pre-event" (31.76%) and least in the "Integrated" (20%.) approaches. Furthermore, the analysis of the results provided useful insights that are discussed in detail. Also, twelve key areas have been identified that need due attention to improve the overall efficiency of the LSCM operations. - Abstract
Therapeutic management of contagious caprine pleuroneumonia (CCPP) involves mostly the use of oxytetracycline followed by enrofloxacin and rarely tylosin. In many parts of the world including India, the former antibiotics are commonly available than the latter. Therefore, prolonged use of the same leads to the development of antibiotic resistance and decreased efficacy of drug. Besides, inflammatory and allergic pathogenesis of CCPP envisages combination therapy. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the combination therapy using different antibiotics (oxytetracycyline @ 10: group I, enrofloxacin @ 5 group II, and tylosin: group III, @ 10 mg/kg body weight), along with anti-inflammatory (meloxicam @ 0.5 mg/kg) and anti-allergic (pheneramine maleate @ 1.0 mg/kg) drugs. These drugs were given intramuscularly at the interval of 48 h for four times in three test groups (n = 10) of Pashmina goats, viz. groups I, II, and III, respectively, affected with CCPP. Group IV (n = 10) was kept as healthy control when group V (n = 10) treated with oxytetracycline @ 10 mg/kg alone was used as positive control. Clinical signs, clinical parameters, pro-inflammatory cytokine (tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)), and oxidative stress indices (total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS)) were evaluated at hours 0, 48, 96, and 144 of experimental trial. Tylosin-based combination therapy resulted in a rapid and favorable recovery resulting in restoration of normal body temperature (102.46 ± 0.31 °F), respiration rate (16.30 ± 0.79 per minute), and heart rate (89.50 ± 2.63 per minute) compared to the oxytetracycline (102.95 ± 0.13, 21.30 ± 1.12, 86.00 ± 2.33, respectively) and enrofloxacin (102.97 ± 0.19, 21.00 ± 1.25, 90.00 ± 2.58, respectively) treated groups. By hour 144, all the groups showed restoration of clinical parameters of normal health and diminishing signs of CCPP, viz. fever, dyspnea, coughing, nasal discharge, weakness, and pleurodynia. Significant (P ≤ 0.05) decrease in levels of TNF-α and non-significant (P > 0.05) decrease in levels of TOS and an increase in levels of TAS were noted from hour 0 to 144 in all the test groups. Within the groups, no significant (P > 0.05) change was noted in TNF-α, TOS, and TAS levels; however, TNF-α levels were comparatively lower in group III. Hematological parameters did not differ significantly (P > 0.05). From these findings, it can be inferred that tylosin-based combination therapy is relatively better for early, rapid, and safe recovery besides minimizing inflammatory and oxidative cascade in CCPP affected Pashmina goats compared to oxytetracycline- and enrofloxacin-based therapies.

The genetics of coat color variation remains a classic area. Earlier studies have focused on a limited number of genes involved in color determination; however, the complete set of trait determinants are still not well known. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing technology to identify and characterize intricate interactions between genes that cause complex coat color variation in Changthangi Pashmina goats, producer of finest and costly commercial animal fiber. We systematically identified differentially expressed mRNAs and lncRNAs from black, brown and white Pashmina goat skin samples by using RNA-sequencing technique. A pairwise comparison of black, white and brown skin samples yielded 2479 significantly dysregulated genes (2422 mRNA and 57 lncRNAs). Differentially expressed genes were enriched in melanin biosynthesis, melanocyte differentiation, developmental pigmentation, melanosome transport activities GO terms. Our analysis suggested the potential role of lncRNAs on color coding mRNAs in cis and trans configuration. 25. Prevalence of ovine cystic echinococcosis in Kashmir Valley, North India.

- Abstract
A total of 1455 local and non-local (originating from other Indian states), slaughtered or spontaneously dead, sheep in various areas of Kashmir Valley were investigated for the presence of cystic echinococcosis over a period of one year. The overall prevalence was 7.97% with higher prevalence in local (14.3%) than in non-local sheep (6.06%). The prevalence of infection, total number of cysts recovered and mean intensity of infection were higher in lungs as 66.2%, 506 & 5.1% respectively, followed by liver (28.5%, 169, 3.9%) and spleen (5.3%, 9, 1.13%). Either single (71.55%) or multiple (28.45%) organ involvements were observed. 66.6% of cysts were of small size, 19.29% medium, 7.01% large and 7.01% calcified. The fertility of cysts was noted to be 65.7% whereas 34.2% were infertile which included 27.1% sterile and 7.01% calcified cysts. The viability percentage of protoscolices from all the fertile cysts was 74.2%. The number of cysts recovered was higher in sheep with body condition score- emaciated, thin and average, and lower in, fat and obesed. The study showed that the local sheep were more vulnerable to contract cystic echinococcosis than non-local sheep which is further aggravated by poor body condition., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. OneDep, a unified system for deposition, biocuration, and validation of experimentally determined structures of biological macromolecules to the PDB archive, has been developed as a global collaboration by the worldwide PDB (wwPDB) partners. This new system was designed to ensure that the wwPDB could meet the evolving archiving requirements of the scientific community over the coming decades. OneDep unifies deposition, biocuration, and validation pipelines across all wwPDB, EMDB, and BMRB deposition sites with improved focus on data quality and completeness in these archives, while supporting growth in the number of depositions and increases in their average size and complexity. Aim: Herbal plants and their derived products are extensively used particularly in many Asian, African, and other countries of the world as they are considered as ideal feed additives because of their non-residual effect and ability to influence the ecosystem of gastrointestinal microbiota in a positive way. Further, the enzymatic treatment of these herbs helps in their efficient utilization by the host. Dandelion leaves and fenugreek seeds have been reported to have positive effect in terms of improving the performance of broiler chicken, but not much literature is available regarding their effect on gut histomorphology; therefore, the present study was conducted to explore the effect of these herbs either alone or in combination with or without enzyme treatment on histomorphology of liver and small intestine of broiler chicken., Materials and Methods: To achieve the envisaged objective, 273-day-old commercial broiler chicks were procured from a reputed source and reared together until 7 days of age. On the 7(th) day, the chicks were individually weighed, distributed randomly into 7 groups of 3 replicates with 13 chicks each. Birds in the control group were fed diets without additives (T1). The other six treatment groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0.5% dandelion leaves (T2), 1% fenugreek seeds (T3), combination of 0.5% dandelion leaves and 1% fenugreek seeds (T4), enzyme treated dandelion leaves 0.5% (T5), enzyme treated fenugreek seeds 1% (T6), and combination of enzyme treated dandelion leaves (0.5%) and (1%) fenugreek seeds (T7). The histomorphological study of liver and small intestines was conducted among different treatment groups., Results: The results revealed the hepato-protective nature of both dandelion leaves and fenugreek seeds either alone or in combination with or without enzyme treatment when compared with the control group. Moreover, the histomorphological findings of jejunum revealed the beneficial effect of dandelion leaves, fenugreek seeds and enzymes on the intestinal mucosa in terms of cellular infiltration, architecture of villi, villus height/crypt depth ratio, thereby improving the intestinal health., Conclusion: The dandelion leaves and fenugreek seeds have hepato-protective nature and beneficial effect on the intestinal morphology particularly when included along with enzymes in the diet of broiler chicken.

In addition to expressional variation, it is comprehensively evident that the immunogenicity of a protein can be a deciding factor for instigating an inflammation afflicted-carcinogenesis. Considering both these factors, a simple and systematic strategy was designed to capture the immunogenic cancer biomarkers from sera of colorectal cancer patients. The affinity reagent, in the form of an antibody repertoire against the secretome of the HT29 cell line was used to grade the sera samples on the basis of the degree of immuno-reactivity and to capture differentially expressed antigens from the patient sera. Following affinity based 2DE-MALDI-TOF; the proteins were identified as (1) soluble vimentin; and (2) TGF-beta-inhibited membrane-associated protein (PP16B), in colon cancer sera and (3) keratin, type II cytoskeletal protein in rectal cancer sera. Pathway reconstruction and protein-protein networking of identified proteins predicted only Vimentin to be physically and genetically engaged in close proximity with the most established colorectal cancer associated tumorigenic pathways. Furthermore, our findings suggest that a possible surface stoichiometric shift in the structure of protein could be due to mutations in the coding sequence of Vimentin that may elicit its enhanced secretion possibly due to protein-hyperphosphorylation. Of the three proteins identified, only Vimentin showed higher expression in sera of colon cancer patients alone. Thus, it could be argued that vimentin might help in predicting individuals at higher risk of developing colon cancers. Our data are therefore suggestive of using vimentin as an antigen for tumor vaccination in an autologous set-up for colon cancers.

Background/aim: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is diagnosed by fever episodes with sterile peritonitis, arthritis, pleurisy, and erysipelas-like erythema. The relationship between phenotype and genotype in FMF has not been adequately explained. The aim of this study was to characterize the phenotype and genotype correlation in FMF., Materials and Methods: Clinical diagnosis of FMF was conducted according to the Tel Hashomer criteria. Pras scoring was used to determine clinical severity. FMF strip assay analysis was used, and the hotspot regions were observed with PCR amplification and automatic DNA sequence analysis method., Results: We showed commonly seen mutations (most frequently M694V) in a study group of 191 patients. The disease severity score of patients with M694V mutation was high on the Pras scoring system. Patients with M694V mutation needed high colchicine dosages to control disease activity. R202Q was the most commonly seen polymorphism in 70 patients. The coexpression of R314R single nucleotide polymorphism on third exon was shown in our study. Moreover, D102D, G138G, and A165A subhaplotypes and E474E, Q476Q, and D510D subhaplotypes were also shown., Conclusion: DNA sequence analysis should be a commonly used method for progress in the field of molecular genetics and for the better understanding of the FMF phenotype and genotype relationships in all populations.

Background/aim: The effectiveness of assessing volume load via bioimpedance in pediatric patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) was investigated., Materials and Methods: Patients with NS (n = 34) were compared with healthy controls (n = 20). The inferior vena cava index and inferior vena cava collapsibility index (IVCCI) scores were determined for all subjects. Bioimpedance measurements were used to directly determine volume load. Clinical findings, relative fluid load, and echocardiographic measurements were determined and compared with bioimpedance in calculating volume load., Results: The sensitivity and specificity of bioimpedance in determining volume load were found to be 65% and 90%, respectively. IVCCI was lower in NS patients than in controls. There were also significant differences in IVCCI values between patients with localized and generalized edema. Relative fluid load was higher in NS patients with generalized edema as opposed to patients with localized edema. For calculating volume load, the sensitivity of bioimpedance, clinical findings, and echocardiographic measurements was 87%, 95%, and 83%, respectively, whereas the specificity of determining volume load by bioimpedance, clinical findings, and echocardiographic measurements was 50%, 10%, and 80%, respectively., Conclusion: Our data suggest that bioimpedance may be superior to echocardiography in determining volume load in children with NS, because it is cost-effective, reliable, and relatively simple to perform.

- Abstract
Background: The aim of this paper is to determine both the prevalence of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in the A & E Department and the most relevant epidemiological changes in the last decade, as well as the profile and management of these patients., Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional analysis at 49 Spanish A & E Departments during 12 months. All patients with infections, respiratory infection or CAP diagnosis were included. All patients attended to in A & E during the study were recorded as well., Results: CAP has increased its prevalence among patients in the A & E Departments in the past decade (0.85% to 1.35%, p <0.001). Fifty-one per cent were over 70 years old. Sixty-nine point eight per cent had some underlying disease and 17.8% had risk factors. Eleven point seven per cent met sepsis criteria, 4.6% severe sepsis and 3% septic shock. Thirty-seven per cent of patients were directly discharged from the A & E Departments., Conclusions: The impact and prevalence of CAP in A & E Departments has increased in the last decade. It is the most common cause of sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock, admission to intensive care units and death due to infectious disease.

- Abstract
The study evaluates a pinhole castration technique in male stray dogs. Animals (n=18) were randomly allotted to 2 groups: group I (n=12, pinhole castration) and group II (n=6, sham control). Percutaneous (in situ) spermatic cord ligation was performed under xylazine-ketamine anesthesia in all animals of group I. Scrotal and the testicular dimensions and testicular volume were measured on day 28 followed by bilateral orchiectomy in both the groups. Significantly lower readings were obtained from animals of group I when compared with pre-ligation readings as well as the corresponding readings from group II animals. In ligated animals volume of testicles showed a reduction by 40.57%. Histopathological examination of testicles revealed degeneration and atrophy in Group I animals. On the whole pinhole castration was found effective, minimally invasive, cheap, simple and a quick technique for male dog sterilization with potential for adoption in large-scale animal birth control programs., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. 33. Effect of dietary supplementation of organic acids on performance, intestinal histomorphology, and serum biochemistry of broiler chicken.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of dietary supplementation of organic acids on the performance, intestinal histomorphology, and blood biochemistry of broiler chicken. The birds in the control (T(1)) group were fed the basal diet whereas in other treatment groups basal diet was supplemented with 2% butyric acid (T(2)), 3% butyric acid (T(4)), 2% fumaric acid (T(4)), 3% fumaric acid (T(5)), 2% lactic acid (T(6)), and 3% lactic acid (T(7)). Broiler chicken fed diets supplemented with organic acids had significantly (P < .05) improved body weight gains and feed conversion ratio. No effect (P < .05) on cumulative feed consumption was observed. The addition of organic increased villus height in the small intestines but the differences were not significant (P < .05) in case of the ileum. Serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations were increased (P < .05) but no effect (P < .05) on the concentration of serum glucose and cholesterol, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), and serum glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT) was observed. The results indicated that the organic acid supplementation, irrespective of type and level of acid used, had a beneficial effect on the performance of broiler chicken.

The present investigation reports the results from a 2-yr study conducted on the prevalence and associated lesions of the nematode Cheilospirura (Acuaria) hamulosa (Nematoda, Acuarioidea) in a sample size of 478 indigenous fowl collected from different localities of Kashmir Valley, India. The investigation revealed the annual prevalence for the nematode for the first and second yr of study to be 3.4% (8/233) and 3.7% (9/245), respectively, with an overall prevalence of 3.5% (17/478). Parasitized birds did not present with clinical signs. Despite the low parasite burdens, the lesions induced by C. hamulosa were severe. Histological examination of the infected gizzard revealed discrete and coalescing nodular and cystic lesions in the mucosa and musculature which contained sections of the parasite. Cellular reaction in the lesions was characterized by a large number of lymphocytes, monocytes, plasma cells, heterophils, and, in some of the sections, severe eosinophilic reaction. The mucosa and submucosa showed markedly thickened and diffuse mononuclear infiltration as well as reactive lymphoid nodules.

- Abstract
Background: Early antibiotic administration to patients diagnosed of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) has been associated with a lower mortality. In the USA, its administration within four hours has been implanted as a quality standard. The objective of this work was to analyze, in a Spanish emergency department, the performance with patients with CAP, focusing on the administration of the first dose of antibiotic., Patients and Method: Clinics, welfare and organizational aspects have been analysed on 93 patients diagnosed of CAP in an emergency department in order to identify their influence on antibiotic administration within 4 hours., Results: 46.2% of patients received antibiotics within 4 hours. The fact that patients were assisted in the higher complexity level showed a positive association with the antibiotic administration within 4 hours. On the contrary, presence of more than 10 patients waiting to be admitted showed a negative association., Conclusions: Early antibiotic administration in the CAP is possible. On order to guarantee a higher number of patients taking antibiotics within 4 hours we have to improve quality of care in both the emergency department (to guarantee correct classification according to the level of complexity) and in the hospital (management of beds to avoid delay in the admission of the patients)., (Copyright (c) 2008 Sociedad Española de Calidad Asistencial. A faunistical study of ectoparasites was carried out for a period of two years from January 2005 to December 2006 in rural free-range chicken purchased from different areas of Kashmir valley. Screening of a total of 478 birds revealed only lice infestation with an overall prevalence of about 100% and 97.69% birds harboring multiple species. The prevalence for various species of lice, during winter, spring, summer, autumn and overall prevalence respectively, was 90.32%, 99.14%, 100%, 98.34% and 96.86% for Lipeurus caponis; 33.87%, 48.71%, 57.75%, 39.66% and 44.76% for Goniodes gigas; 29.83%, 32.47%, 45.68%, 32.23% and 34.93% for Menopon gallinae; 28.22%, 32.47%, 39.65%, 32.23% and 33.05% for Menacanthus cornutus; 16.12%, 19.65%, 25%, 18.18% and 19.66% for Goniocotes gallinae and 6.45%, 12.82%, 13.79%, 4.95% and 9.41% for Eomenacanthus stramineus. The seasonal influence on nature and intensity of infestation was evident.

- Abstract
Background: Characterize clinical findings and outcome of acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) in adults, with special emphasis on nosocomial meningitis and meningitis in the elderly., Methods: We reviewed the charts of all persons 14 years of age or older in whom ABM was diagnosed in our hospital during a 12 and a half-year period., Results: Ninety-seven patients were treated for 100 episodes of ABM, of which 23 percent were nosocomial and 27 percent occurred in elderly persons. Predisposing factors were present in 59 percent of the episodes. Fifty-four percent had the classic triad of fever, nuchal rigidity, and change in mental status. Cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis with a neutrophilic predominance, hypoglycorrhachia, and elevated protein levels were present in 62 percent of the episodes. A pathogen was identified in 62 percent of the cases, in a higher frequency in elderly persons (p < 0.05) and in patients who had not received antibiotics before the lumbar puncture (p < 0.05). Causal agents more frequently identified were: Streptococcus pneumoniae (27 percent) in community-acquired meningitis, coagulase-negative Staphylococci (35 percent) in nosocomial meningitis, and Strep. pneumoniae (33 percent) in elderly persons. Central nervous system (CNS) complications occurred in 18 percent of episodes, and 15 percent developed systemic complications. The overall mortality rate was 9 percent, higher among patients in whom CNS complications began within 24 hours of admission (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: A high proportion of cases of ABM in adults are nosocomial, or affect elderly persons. The fatality rate is high, particularly among those who develop CNS complications at the onset of the disease.

- Abstract
Three cases of spontaneous peritonitis due to Clostridium perfringens in cirrhotic patients with a fatal outcome are reported. The diagnosis was made clinically in two patients and by post-mortem examination in the third. One patient had elevated values of serum alpha-fetoprotein. These cases are compared with three other reported cases in the literature. Blood cultures were negative in the three patients, a fact that lends support to the theory of transmural migration of bacteria. In the authors' experience C. perfringens is the third most frequent agent responsible for spontaneous peritonitis in cirrhosis, preceded by E. coli and Streptococcus and followed by Klebsiella, a surprising fact given the scarce number of reported cases. Routine abdominal paracentesis is recommended in any cirrhotic patient with ascites, followed by appropriate antibiotic treatment whenever positive cultures are obtained. The efficacy of treatment is probably doubtful. The literature on antibiotic treatment of spontaneous peritonitis in cirrhosis is reviewed.

A new syndrome has been described comprising polyneuropathy, oedema, hyperpigmentation and thickening of the skin, gynaecomastia in males and amenorrhoea in females, monoclonal gammopathy, papilloedema and diabetes. There is frequent osteosclerosis with or without plasmacytoma, hepatosplenomegaly and polycythaemia. There is a good response to corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs and occasionally to excision or irradiation of the plasmacytoma. This syndrome was first described in Japan, and is still seen predominantly there, and only occasionally in other areas. An example in a 51-year-old Spanish female is described: she had a spectacular response to prednisone and melphalan. The aetiopathogenic possibilities are discussed.
