1. COVID-19 related treatment and outcomes among COVID-19 ICU patients: A retrospective cohort study

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic remains an immediate and present concern, yet as of now there is still no approved therapeutic available for the treatment of COVID-19.This study aimed to investigate and report evidence concerning demographic characteristics and currently-used medications that contribute to the ultimate outcomes of COVID-19 ICU patients. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among all COVID-19 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Asir Central Hospital in Saudi Arabia between the 1st and 30th of June 2020. Data extracted from patients’ medical records included their demographics, home medications, medications used to treat COVID-19, treatment durations, ICU stay, hospital stay, and ultimate outcome (recovery or death).Descriptive statistics and regression modelling were used to analyze and compare the results. The study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committees at both Asir Central Hospital and King Khalid University. Results: A total of 118 patients with median age of 57 years having definite clinical and disease outcomes were included in the study. Male patients accounted for 87% of the study population, and more than 65% experienced at least one comorbidity. The mean hospital and ICU stay was 11.4 and 9.8 days, respectively. The most common drugs used were tocilizumab (31.4%), triple combination therapy (45.8%), favipiravir (56.8%), dexamethasone (86.7%), and enoxaparin (83%). Treatment with enoxaparin significantly reduced the length of ICU stay (p = 0.04) and was found to be associated with mortality reduction in patients aged 50−75 (p = 0.03), whereas the triple regimen therapy and tocilizumab significantly increased the length of ICU stay in all patients (p = 0.01, p = 0.02 respectively). Conclusion: COVID-19 tends to affect males more significantly than females. The use of enoxaparin is an important part of COVID-19 treatment, especially for those above 50 years of age, while the use of triple combination therapy and tocilizumab in COVID-19 protocols should be reevaluated and restricted to patients who have high likelihood of benefit.

Abstract

The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1510-089 is known for its complex multiwavelength behavior, and is one of only a few FSRQs detected at very high energy (VHE, $E>100\,$GeV) $\gamma$-rays. VHE $\gamma$-ray observations with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC during late May and early June 2016 resulted in the detection of an unprecedented flare, which reveals for the first time VHE $\gamma$-ray intranight variability in this source. While a common variability timescale of $1.5\,$hr is found, there is a significant deviation near the end of the flare with a timescale of $\sim 20\,$min marking the cessation of the event. The peak flux is nearly two orders of magnitude above the low-level emission. For the first time, curvature is detected in the VHE $\gamma$-ray spectrum of PKS 1510-089, which is fully explained through absorption by the extragalactic background light. Optical R-band observations with ATOM reveal a counterpart of the $\gamma$-ray flare, even though the detailed flux evolution differs from the VHE ightcurve. Interestingly, a steep flux decrease is observed at the same time as the cessation of the VHE flare. In the high energy (HE, $E>100\,$MeV) $\gamma$-ray band only a moderate flux increase is observed with Fermi-LAT, while the HE $\gamma$-ray spectrum significantly hardens up to a photon index of 1.6. A search for broad-line region (BLR) absorption features in the $\gamma$-ray spectrum indicates that the emission region is located outside of the BLR. Radio VLBI observations reveal a fast moving knot interacting with a standing jet feature around the time of the flare. As the standing feature is located $\sim 50\,$pc from the black hole, the emission region of the flare may have been located at a significant distance from the black hole. If this correlation is indeed true, VHE $\gamma$ rays have been produced far down the jet where turbulent plasma crosses a standing shock., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures. 6. Gain characteristics of a 100 micrometer thick GEM in Krypton-CO2 mixtures

Abstract

The operation of a Micropattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD) comprising a cascade of two non-standard Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) made from a 100 micrometer kapton foil was evaluated in pure krypton and in krypton-CO2 mixtures. The final avalanche charge was collected in a 2D strip readout, providing an active area of 10x10 cm2 for the entire detection system. For each mixture, the effective gain and energy resolution were measured as a function of the electric field in the drift, transfer and induction regions. Using X-rays from a 55Fe radioactive source (5.9 keV), gains close to 104 and energy resolution of 22% (FWHM) were achieved in pure krypton under stable conditions, showing the potential of the experimental setup for the following imaging studies.

Abstract

Hybrid pixel sensor technology such as the Medipix3 represents a unique tool for electron imaging. We have investigated its performance as a direct imaging detector using a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) which incorporated a Medipix3 detector with a 300 micrometre thick silicon layer compromising of 256x256 pixels at 55 micrometre pixel pitch. We present results taken with the Medipix3 in Single Pixel Mode (SPM) with electron beam energies in the range, 60 to 200 keV. Measurements of the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and the Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE) were investigated. At a given beam energy, the MTF data was acquired by deploying the established knife edge technique. Similarly, the experimental data required to DQE was obtained by acquiring a stack of images of a focused beam and of free space (flatfield) to determine the Noise Power Spectrum (NPS).

Abstract

In our article we report first quantitative measurements of imaging performance for the current generation of hybrid pixel detector, Medipix3, as direct electron detector. Utilising beam energies of 60 & 80 keV, measurements of modulation transfer function (MTF) and detective quantum efficiency (DQE) have revealed that, in single pixel mode (SPM), energy threshold values can be chosen to maximize either the MTF or DQE, obtaining values near to, or even exceeding, those for an ideal detector. We have demonstrated that the Medipix3 charge summing mode (CSM) can deliver simultaneous, near ideal values of both MTF and DQE. To understand direct detection performance further we have characterized the detector response to single electron events, building an empirical model which can predict detector MTF and DQE performance based on energy threshold. Exemplifying our findings we demonstrate the Medipix3 imaging performance, recording a fully exposed electron diffraction pattern at 24-bit depth and images in SPM and CSM modes. Taken together our findings highlight that for transmission electron microscopy performed at low energies (energies <100 keV) thick hybrid pixel detectors provide an advantageous and alternative architecture for direct electron imaging

Abstract

Context: MWC 656 has recently been established as the first observationally detected high-mass X-ray binary system containing a Be star and a black hole (BH). The system has been associated with a gamma-ray flaring event detected by the AGILE satellite in July 2010. Aims: Our aim is to evaluate if the MWC 656 gamma-ray emission extends to very high energy (VHE > 100 GeV) gamma rays. Methods. We have observed MWC 656 with the MAGIC telescopes for $\sim$23 hours during two observation periods: between May and June 2012 and June 2013. During the last period, observations were performed contemporaneously with X-ray (XMM-Newton) and optical (STELLA) instruments. Results: We have not detected the MWC 656 binary system at TeV energies with the MAGIC Telescopes in either of the two campaigns carried out. Upper limits (ULs) to the integral flux above 300 GeV have been set, as well as differential ULs at a level of $\sim$5% of the Crab Nebula flux. The results obtained from the MAGIC observations do not support persistent emission of very high energy gamma rays from this system at a level of 2.4% the Crab flux., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

14. X-ray imaging with GEMs using $100\,\mu$m thick foils

Abstract

A simple X-ray imaging system using off-the-shelf electronics and simple reconstruction algorithms aiming a spatial resolution of 1.7 mm ($\sim 3\,\%$ of the detector length) is described in this work. For this, two 100 cm$^2$ Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) foils with a thickness of 100 \mu m (2-fold thicker than the standard ones) were immersed in a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide (70:30). The charge readout with 2D position determination was done with resistive charge division. Due to their higher thickness with respect to the standard GEMs, the 100 \mu m thick GEM foils were found to be less prone to damage caused by the electrical discharges. X-ray images are shown and some descriptions of the physical processes involved are presented. We describe the advantages of this method that allows counting each X-ray photon or particle entering the detector, its interaction position, as well as measuring of its energy. The results of our present work show a position resolution below 2 mm, being limited by the gas mixture used, and not the detecting system, with a very good cost effectiveness. 20. Using drone for chemical control of cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae L. (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in canola fields

Abstract

Canola, Brassica napus L. is a significant oilseed crop, containing 35 to 45% oil in its seeds, and can be cultivated in various climatic regions. Cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae L. is the most important pest of the canola fields in Iran. Chemical insecticide application using ground sprayers is the primary method for controlling B. brassicae in canola fields. However, the dense and tall growth of canola plants poses challenges for maneuvering ground sprayers, which can potentially cause damage to the plants. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the feasibility and efficacy of aerial spraying of canola fields against cabbage aphid using drone, and compared it with ground spraying. During two growing seasons, this study was conducted in canola fields of Miandoab and Ilakhchi in northwest Iran. Aphid populations were sampled 24 hours before sprayings and 48 hours, 72 hours, and two weeks after sprayings. A six-rotor drone equipped with micronair rotary atomizers was employed for aerial spraying, while a tractor-mounted sprayer was used for ground applications. Results demonstrated that aerial spraying with drone was significantly more efficient, achieving two to six times higher efficacy against cabbage aphids than ground spraying, as measured by the reduction in aphid populations. Image analysis of water-sensitive cards indicated that drones produced finer droplets with smaller volume median diameters. Economic analysis revealed that aerial spraying was more cost-effective despite higher initial costs due to lower operational expenses and reduced water usage. Abstract

The discussion about the thought and views of Ayn-al-Qużāt Hamadānī, the famous mystic of the 6th century, has always been attractive due to his special mystical-philosophical system of thought, as well as his openness and exemplary carelessness in expressing his inner thoughts. Along with the rational view of a religious philosopher, he has presented a different view from the point of view of a mystic. One of the important things in the intellectual system of Ayn-al-Qużāt Hamadānī is his definition and analysis of the category of” wisdom”. He has specified a way for wisdom, and where the wisdom cannot reach, he calls it beyond wisdom, and to achieve this, the eyes of human insight must be opened. Moreover, the judge calls wisdom a “special measure” and believes it does not have the ability to reach the realm of the kingdom. Abstract

The rapid impact assessment matrix (RIAM) is a widely utilized tool for evaluating environmental impacts in municipal solid waste management. However, the traditional RIAM (T-RIAM) method includes ambiguities in its scoring classification, which can hinder decision-making accuracy. This study introduces a modified RIAM approach, enhancing classification precision by refining impact categories, making it particularly valuable for projects constrained by time and resources. Using the Nazlou landfill in Urmia, Iran, as a case study, two waste management scenarios were assessed: (1) constructing a new landfill cell with leachate treatment facilities and (2) adding a composting plant to divert organic waste. The second scenario was identified as the optimal choice due to its positive environmental impacts across physical-chemical, biological-ecological, and socio-cultural domains, as well as its high public acceptance. Under the proposed classification scheme, the ''+E,'' ''+D,'' and ''–C″ impacts for this scenario decreased from 3, 7, and 3 (as per T-RIAM) to 2, 2, and 0, respectively. The refined scoring system allowed sharper differentiation, with only the most significant impacts classified in ''+E″ or ''–E″ categories, facilitating clearer decision-making compared to T-RIAM. Additionally, the streamlined classification approach reduces the need for extensive data inputs, making the modified RIAM an efficient alternative to resource-intensive methods like life cycle assessment for preliminary evaluations. Beyond waste management, the modified RIAM framework has potential applications in addressing broader environmental challenges, including water resource management, air quality assessment, and infrastructure planning, offering versatile utility for municipal decision-making.

Abstract

Oxidative damage to DNA is a threat to the genomic integrity and coding accuracy of the chromosomes of all living organisms. Guanine is particularly susceptible to oxidation, and 8-oxo-dG (OG), when produced in situ or incorporated by DNA polymerases, is highly mutagenic due to mispairing with adenine. In many bacteria, defense against OG depends on MutT enzymes, which sanitize OG in the nucleotide pool, and the MutM/Y system, which counteracts OG in chromosomal DNA. In Escherichia coli, antibiotic lethality has been linked to oxidative stress and the downstream consequences of OG processing. However, in mycobacteria, the role of these systems in genomic integrity and antibiotic lethality is not understood, in part because mycobacteria encode four MutT enzymes and two MutMs, suggesting substantial redundancy. Here, we definitively probe the role of OG handling systems in mycobacteria. We find that, although MutT4 is the only MutT enzyme required for resistance to oxidative stress, this effect is not due to OG processing. We find that the dominant system that defends against OG-mediated mutagenesis is MutY/MutM1, and this system is dedicated to in situ chromosomal oxidation rather than correcting OG incorporated by accessory polymerases (DinB1/DinB2/DinB3/DnaE2). In addition, we uncover that mycobacteria resist antibiotic lethality through nucleotide sanitization by MutTs, and in the absence of this system, accessory DNA polymerases and MutY/M contribute to antibiotic-induced lethality. These results reveal a complex, multitiered system of OG handling in mycobacteria with roles in oxidative stress resistance, mutagenesis, and antibiotic lethality.
