This paper presents the results of a study carried on a collection of 144 metal artefacts from the Early (ca. 2800-2600/2500 a.C.) and the Middle/Final Chalcolithic (ca. 2600/2500-2000 a.C.), found at the site of Leceia (Oeiras, Central Portugal) during the excavations conducted between 1983 and 2000. A systematised analysis of the collection was provided in order to enumerate the different typologies found in the site and to determine their chemical composition. From a typological point of view, a great diversity of artifacts was found, namely, punches, fish-hooks, flat axes, chisels, saws, ingots and foundry remnants. Elemental analysis, by X-ray Fluorescence, shows that the artefacts were made of copper, with a variable occurence of arsenic, nickel, silver, antimony, bismuth, lead and iron. A razão 87Sr/86Sr é usada em estratigrafia com intuito de correlacionar e, em última instância, datar eventos de sedimentação carbonatada marinha. A variação da razão isotópica 87Sr/86Sr ao longo da escala do tempo geológico aliada ao facto desta razão isotópica poder considerar-se uniforme em todo o oceano num determinado momento geológico, abre uma temática para a investigação e caraterização da sedimentação carbonatada e o seu ambiente de sedimentação. Desta forma, é importante perceber as limitações inerentes à utilização desta razão isotópica como método de correlação de episódios carbonatados. No presente trabalho, analisam-se um conjunto de amostras de carbonatos Câmbricos (ou atribuídos ao Câmbrico) da Zona de Ossa-Morena, amostrados em diversos sectores. Os carbonatos amostrados apresentam graus metamórficos distintos, sendo caracterizada a sua lito-facies bem como a presença de processos dolomitização tardia (i.e. pós-metamórfica). Os dados mostram que os processos de dolomitização tardia provocam um incremento significativo das razões 87Sr/86Sr, quando comparados com os carbonatos (mármores ou calcários) calcíticos presentes nas mesmas unidades. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio is usually used in stratigraphy to correlate and even date marine carbonate sedimentation events. The variation of the 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratio along the geological time scale combined with the fact of this isotopic ratio could be considered uniform in all ocean at a given geological moment, opens a thematic for the investigation and characterization of carbonate sedimentation and as well it sedimentation environment. Therefore, it is important to understand the inherent limitations to the use of this isotope ratio as a method of correlation. For the present work, the Cambrian (or Cambrian attributed) carbonates from the Ossa-Morena Zone were sampled in several sectors. These samples present distinct metamorphic features and their litho-facies were been characterized, as well as the presence of late dolomitization processes (i.e. post-metamorphic). The data show that the late dolomitization processes induce a significant increase of the 87Sr/86Sr ratio, when compared with the calcitic carbonates (marbles and limestones) collected in the same units. published

Atribuído pela primeira vez em 1902, o Prémio Valmor é um dos mais prestigiados prémios de arquitetura em Portugal, sendo a sua atribuição da responsabilidade da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa. Da necessidade de garantir a proteção e conservação das construções que remontam ao início do séc. XX, propõe-se, numa primeira fase, a caracterização dos revestimentos constituintes de edifícios galardoados com este prémio. De facto estes revestimentos tiveram grandes modiicações em termos de soluções adotadas e de composição, no último século, nomeadamente com a introdução de novos materiais, como por exemplo o cimento Portland. Aplicando uma metodologia de caracterização envolvendo análise de registos, observação in situ, ensaios químicos, mineralógicos, microestruturais, físicos e mecânicos, os resultados obtidos permitirão colmatar uma lacuna no conhecimento dos materiais e das técnicas construtivas relacionadas com o advento da utilização do cimento Portland. Este conhecimento, importante por si só como registo histórico, é também imprescindível numa perspetiva de diagnóstico das causas e identiicação dos principais agentes de degradação. O estudo dessas características permite, não só através da caracterização detalhada mas também do intervalo cronológico construtivo (ao longo do séc. XX), compreender a evolução dos processos de degradação constrangidos num determinado período e contexto construtivo, assim como prever soluções de reabilitação (e.g. compatibilização de materiais construtivos, prevenção de degradação). Neste trabalho apresentam-se os resultados da síntese e da caracterização de nano-materiais de hidróxido de cálcio e de hidróxido de magnésio visando a sua aplicação como consolidantes de suportes com pintura mural. Alkaline minerals, like feldspars and micas, present in aggregates can release alkalis with time for concrete pore solution, being a contributor factor for the delaying ASR occurrence in some concrete structures (e.g. dams). Since there is presently no consensus on how to test for releasable alkalis in aggregates, a research program has been conducted to evaluate the factors that can affect the alkalis release in laboratory test conditions. This paper presents the results after 455 days evaluation of alkalis released by igneous aggregates with different grain sizes, in different alkaline solutions (Ca(OH)2, NaOH and KOH), in two different concentrations (1M and 0.7M) -with and without addition of saturated Ca(OH)2. The results obtained show that reducing the particle size of the aggregates leads to an increase of alkalis release to the solution, which is higher in the alkaline solutions of KOH and NaOH with saturated Ca(OH)2. The sodium extraction is higher in 0.7M KOH, while potassium is higher in 1M NaOH. 10p DM/NMM

Jorge Colaço is a Portuguese painter who started his artistic career as painter, oil painting on canvas and making cartoons for newspapers. In the early twentieth century, due to curiosity and interest in tiles, he devoted himself to tile painting. The vastness and the quality of his artwork (tile and frame panels) required mastery and accuracy in drawing and painting, but also a developed knowledge of the ceramic techniques, which the artist acquired in the factories where he worked: Sacavém Factory (Fábrica de Sacavém) and Lusitânia Factory (Fábrica Cerâmica Lusitânia). In the context of the inventory and identification of his artistic creation we highlight the conservation issues. Towards a deeper understanding of these problems it was necessary to corroborate by laboratorial analysis the information provided by written and oral sources about the techniques he once used. For the analytic part of this research we were limited by the samples made available that were nonetheless considered sufficient to draw conclusions: two samples of indoor polychrome panels from Casa do Alentejo in Lisbon, painted while he worked at the Sacavém Factory; and one sample retrieved from the outdoor panels that line the façade of the Santo Ildefonso Church, in Oporto, painted while at the Lusitânia Factory. 91-110pp. Abstract in English; full text in Portuguese. Pattern or figurative azulejos are commonly found decorating the interior of churches, palaces and religious buildings in Portugal, representing local productions from the late 16th century onwards. The history and micro-climatic background of each building determined that not every azulejo reached the present day in good condition. Restorers tend to associate azulejo decay to the action of soluble salts through cycles of dissolution and crystallization. NaCl is often mentioned and the suspicion of its presence justifies long desalinization processes during restorations. Whenever there are glaze lacunas and the ceramic biscuit is exposed, efflorescence is sometimes apparent at the surface. Other times there is no visible efflorescence, even in locations inaccessible to cleaning actions, and no signs of sanding associated to crypto-florescence. The aim of this research was the survey of in situ forms of degradation, and the sampling of efflorescence and decaying biscuits, aimed at: i) determining the occurrence of soluble salts even if unapparent; ii) determining analytically their nature; iii) establishing circumstantial relations between the occurrence of particular soluble salts and decay, to be later explored through laboratorial simulations. 29 properties throughout Portugal were visited (of which 14 inland and 15 in coastal areas) in which walls were lined with azulejos produced in Coimbra or Lisbon. The salt samples and small fragments collected in situ were analysed with a HITACHI 3700N Scanning Electron Microscope with microanalysis unit (SEM-EDS) at the Hercules Laboratory (Évora University). The communication will illustrate the results of the study, connecting some forms of decay to the action of soluble salts recurrently found associated with them such as NaCl, more abundantly found in near-shore properties, along with sodium carbonate (trona). Concrete swelling processes are one of the main degradation mechanisms of hydro concrete structures, such as dams. Included in this degradation phenomenon, the reactions that involve the aggregates when exposed to the alkali rich environment of the cement paste are probably the ones that deserve more concern worldwide. The alkali concentration of the concrete pore solution could also be modified with time due to the alkalis release from some aggregates or mineral phases present in the aggregate particles, a fact which perhaps could explain the delaying occurrence of AAR in some dams. This paper presents the first results of the evaluation of the alkalis released by different types of aggregates. The results obtained evidence that aggregates containing alkali minerals in their composition are susceptible to alkalis releasing in alkaline solution. This release is thought to be dependent on the mineralogy of the aggregate, the particle size and the type of solution employed. In order to aid research, improve preservation actions and develop better options for future interventions it is important to know the preservation materials and procedures adopted throughout the past and especially the ones being adopted nowadays. A survey to specialists working in situ in preservation and restoration of glazed decorative tiles has been performed aiming at getting insight on their type of training, work portfolio, opinions, the current materials and procedures used in the diverse phases of a preservation intervention (diagnosis, cleaning, consolidation, bonding fragments and fixing of glazed layer, volumetric and chromatic reintegration, final coating, resetting of tiles and manufacture of replicas) and the criteria/factors that support the specialists choices.

The Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro (GDZ), built between the )th and the middle of the Crd millennium BC, between the late Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, is located on the right margin of Peramanca riverside, in Valverde, municipality of Évora (Portugal), and is one of the largest megalithic monuments on the Iberian Peninsula. The GDZ was identified and excavated between (lm) and (lmp by Henrique Leonor Pina and is classified as a national monument since (lo). During the p's decade of last century, due to the monument degradation, some conservation works were carried over under the direction of Caetano Mello Beirão, and some archaeological research was also performed.

A cidade Romana de Ammaia é um importante sítio arqueológico, localizado no distrito de Portalegre (Portugal), que se desenvolveu durante o Império Romano. Pensa-se que tenha sido abandonada de forma abrupta, apesar de algumas evidências de posterior apropriação durante a ocupação muçulmana. Este uso descontinuado provocou a não-ocupação da cidade em épocas mais recentes, o que terá contribuído para a preservação das estruturas e dos vestígios da organização da cidade. Integrado num projeto de estudo mais vasto, as argamassas de assentamento das alvenarias e rebocos foram estudadas. As argamassas podem revelar a capacidade tecnológica e construtiva das sociedades e da sua disponibilidade em empenharem recursos. No estudo prévio das argamassas da Ammaia, conclui-se que os agregados são locais e que em sucessivos períodos históricos (i.e. pré-romanos, romano e pós-romano) foram utilizados diferentes ligantes de terra, calcíticos e dolomíticos. A restrição do uso da matéria-prima dolomite a um determinado período de tempo não era esperado porque a Ammaia localiza-se a escassos 500m de importantes afloramentos deste material (Calcários Dolomíticos da Escusa). Sabendo que os carbonatos retêm estrôncio e que este elemento acarreia uma assinatura que é susceptível de definir uma proveniência [2], foi definida uma metodologia para analisar diversas amostras de argamassa, de calcários dolomíticos da Escusa e de mármores de Estremoz. Cada um dos espécimes foi parcialmente dissolvido em ácido fraco (acético) e posteriormente a solução resultante foi analisada para razões isotópicas 87Sr/86Sr por Espectrometria de Massa de Ionização Térmica (TIMS). Esperava-se que a assinatura isotópica das argamassas se aproximasse da razão dos calcários dolomíticos da Escusa ou dos mármores de Estremoz. No entanto, verificou-se que estas assinaturas isotópicas se sobrepõem, e que a contribuição dos silicatos é, em algumas amostras, suficiente para alterar os valores e aproximá-los do que seria expectável nas rochas ígneas regionais. Desta forma, sem menosprezar as potencialidades do uso dos isótopos na determinação de proveniência de ligantes em argamassas, os autores reconhecem que a metodologia de preparação de amostra deve ser melhorada e a aplicação do sistema isotópico Rb-Sr poderá não ser o mais adequado às rochas e problemática em questão.

The aim of this work was the material characterisation of wall paintings and biodegradation assessment, including the analysis of microbial growth and the effect of microbial proliferation, in view of their conservation. The methodology was applied to the study of frescoes dated from 1531, located in the ancient parish church of Santo Aleixo, Southern Portugal. The combined use of optical microscopy, SEM-EDS and A-XRD showed that the painting palette is composed of red and yellow ochres, malachite, azurite and bone black. The pigments do not show signs of chemical deterioration, except malachite that punctually have transformed to black copper oxide (tenorite). The microbiological study allowed the identification of several bacterial strains (eg Gram+ cocci, Gram+ bacilli, Actinomycetes sp.), yeast strains and filamentous fungi of the genera Penicillium, Cladosporium, Aspergillus among others the microflora present in the paintings.Their metabolic activity is the main responsible for the physical disruption of paint layers and underneath mortars. The combined approach using SEM analysis and enzymatic dehydrogenase measurement allowed the evaluation of microflora proliferation and the biodeterioration diagnosis of the mural paintings. Additionally, the effect of some commercial biocides was evaluated for the main predominant strains in order to select the most efficient biocide.
