Abstract

Modern active hand prostheses include myoelectric controlled electronics and actuators to restore the lost biomechanics functionalities. It is here investigated the feasibility of a wireless transcutaneous telemetry link based on the UHF Radiofrequency Identification aimed at collecting the electromyographic signal just at the level of the muscular tissues. The link should interconnect one or more implanted battery-less antennas with an external miniaturized and conformal reader's antenna integrated with the prosthetic socket. Numerical models and preliminary laboratory experimentations demonstrated the possibility to successfully establish an RFID data link with a multiplicity of implanted tags even by using a low-power (0.25 W) embedded reader with a displacement-tolerance among interrogating and sensor antennas of 1-2 cm.

Abstract

Fever detection in cattle is today a time-consuming manual procedure. Isolating infected animals to avoid the spread of the diseases is therefore not straightforward with the consequence of massive dose of antibiotics delivered to the whole cattle. This work proposes a subdermal implantable flexible battery-less wireless sensor for un-cooperative monitoring of core temperature in pigs. The sensor consists in a shaped loop antenna sewed into a textile scaffold, as anti-migration support, for a natural integration with the animal fatty tissue. By resorting to the UHF-RFID communication protocol, the device can be interrogated from a distance of up to 1.7 m that is compatible with the automatic temperature reading when the animal approaches the cattle feeder.

22. Experimental Assessment of Wireless Monitoring of Axilla Temperature by Means of Epidermal Battery-Less RFID Sensors.

Abstract

Wireless epidermal devices (WEDs), based on UHF radio frequency identification (RFID), enable a contactless and noninvasive human body monitoring through sampling of health parameters directly on the skin. With reference to body temperature, this letter reports an experimental campaign aimed at assessing the degree of agreement of a battery-less plaster-like WED, placed in the armpit region, with a standard axilla thermocouple thermometer. A measurement campaign over 10 volunteers, for overall 120 temperature outcomes, revealed a good correlation among the instruments (Person's coefficient p = 0.78) and a difference of less than 0.6 °C in the 95% of the measured cases, provided that a user-calibration is applied. RFID-WED enables a noncontacting reading up to 20 cm and direct connectivity with a cloud architecture. Envisaged applications are the periodic monitoring in clinical and domestic scenarios, as well as the screening of restricted communities related to COVID-19 control and recovery., (2475-1472 © 2021 IEEE.
