Older adults are particularly compromised when engaged in Prospective Memory (PM) tasks, but it has also been pointed out that age-related PM decline is mainly observed in experimental settings (laboratory vs. naturalistic settings). Here, we present the Padua PM task, a new 'real life' video-based assessment designed to investigate age-related PM changes in an ecologically valid but still well controlled way. The task requires participants to remember to perform event-based and time-based activities while watching short videos. The Padua PM task includes three different conditions namely 'Standard condition', 'Event-based High Demand' (HD) and 'Time-based High Demand' (HD) that aim to disentangle age-related PM impairment in older adults as a function of cognitive demand and of the monitoring requirements for intention retrieval. Participants (20 young adults mean age: 22.35 years and 20 older adults mean age: 68.90 years) were tested with a classical PM task (i.e., an n-back PM computerised task) and with the new Padua PM task. Results confirmed a lower PM performance in older adults compared to their younger counterparts. Older adults also showed a worse performance, than young ones, when the cue was time-based task compared to the event-based in the n-back task (laboratory task), but they showed an opposite pattern of performance in the Padua PM task (event-based and time-based HD conditions; video-based task). Time-based tasks were not necessarily more attentionally demanding than event-based tasks, but the involvement of attentional resources seemed to differently influence performance in different task types. It is concluded that the Padua PM task may serve as a useful tool to further investigate age-related differences in PM performance in the laboratory while using naturalistic task material., Author(s): Giovanna Mioni [sup.1] , Alexandra Hering [sup.2] [sup.3] , A. Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive, behavioral and motor symptoms and has a more challenging clinical management and poorer prognosis compared to other forms of dementia. The experience of lockdown leads to negative psychological outcomes for fragile people such as elderly with dementia, particularly for DLB, causing a worsening of cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Since an individual's feeling of time passage is strongly related to their cognitive and emotional state, it is conceivable to expect alterations of this construct in people with DLB during such a difficult period. We therefore assessed the subjective experience of the passage of time for present and past time intervals (Subjective Time Questionnaire, STQ) during the lockdown due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in 22 patients with DLB (17 of which were re-tested in a post-lockdown period) and compared their experience with that of 14 caregivers with similar age. Patients showed a significantly slower perception of present and past time spent under lockdown restrictions. We argue that these alterations might be related to the distinctive features of DLB and their exacerbation recorded by the patients' caregivers during the period of lockdown, though our results show that the patients' experience of time passage in a post-lockdown period remained similarly slow. Overall, we show an impairment of the subjective perception of time passage in DLB tested during the COVID-19 lockdown., Author(s): Dylan Torboli [sup.1] , Giovanna Mioni [sup.1] , Cinzia Bussé [sup.2] , Annachiara Cagnin [sup.3] , Antonino Vallesi [sup.4] [sup.3] Author Affiliations: (1) grid.5608.b, 0000 0004 1757 3470, Department [...]

Despite human accuracy in perceiving time, many factors can modulate the subjective experience of time. For example, it is widely reported that emotion can expand or shrink our perception of time and that temporal intervals are perceived as longer when marked by auditory stimuli than by visual stimuli. In the present study, we aimed at investigating whether the influence of emotion on time perception can be altered by the order in which emotional stimuli are presented and the sensory modality in which they are presented. Participants were asked to complete a time bisection task in which emotional stimuli were presented either acoustically or visually, and either before or after interval to be estimated. We observed a main effect of modality (longer perceived duration and lower variability in the auditory than in the visual modality) as well as a main effect of emotion (temporal overestimation for negative stimuli compared to neutral). Importantly, the effects of modality and emotion interacted with the order of presentation of the emotional stimuli. In the visual condition, when emotional stimuli were presented after the temporal intervals, participants overestimated time, but no differences between negative and neutral stimuli were observed when emotional stimuli were presented first. In the auditory condition, no significant effect of emotion on perceived duration was found. Results suggest that negative emotions affect our perception of durations acting at the decision-making stage rather than at the pacemaker one. No effect on time perception was observed for emotional auditory stimuli. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Short-term memory -- Physiological aspects ,Psychology and mental health - Abstract
Background: Researchers have devoted much effort in trying to understand how and why our subjective experience of time changes across the adult life-span. The cognitive apparatus that supports timing is integrally entwined with those supporting other cognitive processes including working memory, inhibition and speed of processing. Methods: One-hundred-eighty adults ranged from 19 to 87 years old participated in the study. A time discrimination task, with two standard intervals (short standard = 500 ms; long standard = 1500 ms) was used. Moreover, N-back and Stroop tasks were used to assess working memory, inhibition and speed of processing. Results: Data were analysed with a multilevel mixed model approach. Accounting for between-subject variability, we compared models in order to assess the better fit using chi-square likelihood-ratio test, Akaike information criterion and the Bayesian information criterion. Results showed a significant interaction between age, standard interval, comparison interval and speed of processing. Conclusion: Our study confirmed that younger participants were generally more accurate across conditions than older ones; we also showed that performance depended indeed on intervals, but also on speed of processing abilities across age., Author(s): Giovanna Mioni [sup.1] , Stefano Cardullo [sup.2] , Ambra Ciavarelli [sup.1] , Franca Stablum [sup.1] Author Affiliations: (1) grid.5608.b, 0000 0004 1757 3470, Department of General Psychology, University of [...]

Time-based prospective memory (TBPM) is the ability to perform an intended action at a precise moment in the future, such as to go to the office at 9 a.m. for a meeting. In older adults’ everyday life, TBPM is very relevant as health-related intentions are often part of daily activities, such as taking medication regularly or going to appointments with the doctor; yet, it is unclear how TBPM is affected by aging. In fact, the empirical evidence suggested that, although there are age-related differences in the TBPM paradigm among studies that measured TBPM using laboratory tasks, it is still unclear how large the age effect is. Furthermore, it is still unclear which kind of task-related factors can potentially moderate the magnitude of the age-related differences in TBPM, such as duration of the PM target time, frequency of the TBPM tasks, and the interval chosen to compute PM accuracy. Thus, the aims of the present meta-analysis will be (1) to quantify age-related differences in TBPM among studies that measured TBPM (accuracy and time monitoring) using laboratory tasks, and (2) to measure whether and how specific task-related factors (duration and frequency of the PM target time, and interval chosen for correct PM responses), can affect age-related differences in TBPM.

- Abstract
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Psychological Science Accelerator coordinated three large-scale psychological studies to examine the effects of loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations on behavioral intentions and affective measures. The data collected (April to October 2020) included specific measures for each experimental study, a general questionnaire examining health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, geographical and cultural context characterization, and demographic information for each participant. Each participant started the study with the same general questions and then was randomized to complete either one longer experiment or two shorter experiments. Data were provided by 73,223 participants with varying completion rates. Participants completed the survey from 111 geopolitical regions in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset described here is provided in both raw and processed formats to facilitate re-use and further analyses. The dataset offers secondary analytic opportunities to explore coping, framing, and self-determination across a diverse, global sample obtained at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be merged with other time-sampled or geographic data.

FOS: Psychology ,Cognitive Psychology ,Psychology ,Social and Behavioral Sciences - Abstract
It has often been assumed that our perception and estimation of time depend on the functioning of an internal clock (Buhusi & meck, 2003; 2009; Treisman, 1963). In fact, the existence of intrinsic pacemakers that maintains a constant rhythm has been implicated in behavioral, physiological, and neuroscience studies. At the behavioral level, previous studies have proposed that a person's preferred motor tempo should directly reflect the internal time base rate (Boltz, 1994; Grondin, 2010). In a laboratory setting, the preferred motor tempo is assessed through a spontaneous motor task that aligns with the individual's natural and preferred pace of periodic motor actions. This spontaneous motor tempo (SMT) can be considered an estimate of an intrinsic timekeeper (Boltz, 1994). Various physiological indicators have also been found to be associated with the tempo of the pacemaker. Notably, it has been proposed that the heartbeat itself might function as a pacemaker (Craig, 2009; Pollatos, Yeldesbay, Pikovsky, & Rosenblum, 2014; Wittmann, 2009). When searching for the neural underpinnings of the internal clock(s), it may be tempting to draw a parallel between ticking clocks and oscillating neural networks. Treisman (1963) suggested that the pulse rate of the pacemaker would be influenced by neural oscillations in the alpha range (8–12 Hz): faster alpha rhythms would lead to longer time estimates compared to slower alpha rhythms, as more pulses would accumulate within the same physical time interval (Treisman et al., 1994; Mioni et al., 2020). As described above, intrinsic tempo, which underlies time perception, has been observed in behavioral, physiological, and neuroscience studies. However, to date, there have been no studies examining the relationships among these variables. If the "pacemaker" is a central mechanism, it might be possible to explain spontaneous motor tempo (SMT), an outcome of the pacemaker, through the analysis of individual alpha frequency (IAF) and heart rate, which could reflect the pacemaker's activity. This study aims to measure SMT, IAF, and heart rate for each participant and investigate the correlations between their means and coefficients of variation (CV), as well as explore whether SMT can be explained by other variables.

This OSF is a repository documenting the study and the analysis used in publications using the Blursday database. The Blursday database assembles a broad range of behavioral tests and questionnaires designed to capture subjective time and related processes during confinement together with vital quantitative statistics such as sleep patterns, personality traits, and psychological well-being. The database contains data gathered from over 2800 participants (over 9 countries, 4 continents) tested on 14 questionnaires and 15 tasks during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. It presents data in an easy-to-process and accessible format to facilitate its use by researchers interested in studying the effects of social isolation on temporal information processing, time perspective, decision-making, sleep, metacognition, psychological well-being, attention, self-perception and mindfulness...
