Modern cricetids originated in Asia and dispersed into Western Europe by the end of the early Miocene, where they quickly became major components of the rodent faunas. Here we review the early Miocene rodent record of the genera Democricetodon Fahlbusch, 1964 and Megacricetodon Fahlbusch, 1964 in the Vallès-Penedès Basin (Catalonia, Spain). Democricetodon is represented by four species in the studied sites (D. hispanicus Freudenthal, 1967, D. cf. decipiens (Freudenthal & Daams, 1988), D. gracilis Fahlbusch, 1964 and a large-sized undetermined species) and Megacricetodon by one (M. primitivus (Freudenthal, 1963)). The cricetid succession bears several similarities with that of the nearby Calatayud-Montalbán Basin (East-Central Spain) to the point that the same detailed local biostratigraphy could be extended to the Catalan basin. The rare presence of certain Democricetodon species (D. gracilis) and other small mammal taxa also reveal affinities with regions beyond the Iberian Peninsula and indicate that the Vallès-Penedès Basin was more humid and forested than inland Iberian basins during the early Miocene. In the shallow-marine deposits of the Early Miocene (Aquitanian – Burdigalian) Fırat Formation exposed in the Eğil district of Diyarbakır, SE Turkey, three oyster species such as Ostrea edulis (Linnaeus, 1758), Magallana gryphoides (Schlotheim, 1820), and Hyotissa hyotis (Linnaeus, 1758) were recorded for the first time. The specimens collected include four individuals of O. edulis and three individuals of M. gryphoides from the Sağlam village area, and one individual of H. hyotis from the Sarıca village area in Eğil. These specimens were found in the yellow-limestone facies and beige-white marl facies, which represent the thickest and largest sections of the Fırat Formation. For the Sağlam village area, O. edulis suggests a littoral environment with excessive detrital inputs, ranging from medium to shallow depths, and a warm subtropical climate. The O. edulis display a slender, small, and comparatively regular morphology, suggesting a preference for stable habitats commonly found in coastal regions with minimal environmental variability. Similarly, the presence of the fossil species indicates littoral environments characterized by nearshore shallow depths, low-energy conditions, normal salinity, and warm subtropical climatic conditions for M. gryphoides. For the Sarıca village area, H. hyotis is linked to reef and peri-reef environments, along with shallow tropical-subtropical marine paleoenvironments at depths of up to 50 m. The Early Miocene sites of Napak (Uganda), which have been prospected by the Uganda Palaeontology Expedition since 1985, have yielded abundant fossil remains, including a rich and diverse rodent fauna. Ever since the work of Lavocat (1973) on the East African Miocene rodents, which focused mainly on the Kenyan remains (but included some material from Napak discovered by Bishop during the 1950s and 1960s), few studies have been made on the Ugandan specimens. This lack provides motivation for further study of Napak micro-mammals, especially the abundant rodents, which were collected at five sites, Napak IV, V, XV, XXX and XXXI. The fossils described here are attributed to six species representing four families: Afrocricetodontidae (Afrocricetodon songhori , Protarsomys macinnesi), Myophiomyidae (Myophiomys arambourgi), Kenyamyidae (Simonimys genovefae , Kenyamys mariae) and Sciuridae (Vulcanisciurus africanus). Comparison of the dentition of extant and extinct taxa allows us to propose dietary hypotheses (granivory, herbivory and omnivory) for these rodents. In addition, the fossil rodents associated with other fauna from the same localities suggest a more-or-less dense forest environment with clearings, and the probable presence of a humid climate at the time of deposition. Abstract: The linguliform inarticulate brachiopod genus Discradisca Stenzel, 1964 has been identified for the first time from the Early Burdigalian (Early Miocene) sandy deposits of the Aquitaine Basin, south-western France. The species studied here, D. multiradiata (de Morgan, 1915), originally described from the Middle Miocene of the Loire Basin, north-western France, is characterized by a small size, ornamentation of numerous (up to 100), fine but distinct and beaded tuberculate ribs, and an apex situated subposteriorly to subcentrally. The ecological and taphonomic aspects of this species are also presented. The attribution of some previously described Discinisca Dall, 1871 species from the Tertiary to the genus Discradisca is discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Among the 14small mammal species from the early Miocene locality of the northern area of the Junggar basin (northern Xinjiang, China), four species are cricetids (Rodentia): unnamed species of Cricetodon and Eumyarion, and two new species, Karydomys debruijni nov. sp. and Megacricetodon beijiangensis nov. sp. Some aspects of the morphology of Cricetodon sp. are shared by Eucricetodon from the late Oligocene, suggesting that these specimens could be of intermediate form between Eucricetodon and Cricetodon. One tooth of Eumyarion sp. was found, making its determination uncertain, but its morphology is clearly differentiated from the one of Cricetodon sp. The species K. debruijni nov. sp. is established based on its primitive features compared to the species known in Europe and Anatolia, and its specific association of characters compared to Karydomys dzerzhinskii. M. beijiangensis nov. sp. shows many plesiomorphic features compared to the species already described in the middle Miocene of China. Based on both the whole assemblage of rodents and the species of cricetids, the biochronologic position and the age of the locality are discussed. The locality appears to be biochronologically very close to the fauna from the Chul’adyr Formation in Aktau Mountains, but we propose an age slightly older than the one proposed for this fauna, probably equivalent to the MN3 biozone in Europe. Abstract: In the Early Miocene lacustrine strata of Limagne (Allier, France), three soricids were described long ago: Oligosorex antiquus, Oligosorex ambiguus and Crocidosorex piveteaui. The lack of precise descriptions of, and comparisons among, these fossils – the type specimens of both species of Oligosorex having disappeared – on the one hand, and the lack of accuracy in their biostratigraphic positions on the other, led to long debates about possible synonymies among these species and genera. Many of these controversies are solved by new descriptions, comparisons and better illustrations of the specimens, and recent advances in biostratigraphical attributions. Work along these lines has led to the recognition of Crocidosorex and Oligosorex as independent genera. An additional taxon can be distinguished among the material previously found at Montaigu-le-Blin: this taxon closely matches Pomel''s “Sorex”ambiguus but is here ascribed to Meingensorex nov. gen. Abstract: In this paper we report on the results of a paleontological and paleomagnetic sampling carried out in the Miocene of the central Ebro Basin. It includes the sections of Albalatillo, Lanaja, La Almolda and San Caprasio in the Sierra de Alcubierre, which delivered six new micromammal levels ranging from the MN3 to MN5 mammal units. The magnetobiostratigraphic study of the Sierra de Alcubierre enables one to shed light on the chronology of the Early to Middle Miocene European mammal biozonation (e.g., the Ramblian-Aragonian boundary). As a result, the first occurrence of the “Miocene Cricetids” and, therefore, the lower boundary of MN4 – zone B, is set back to the lower part of chron C5Cr, thus reducing significantly the supposed discrepancy of the First Occurrence of Democricetodon in the Swiss Molasse and the Aragonian type-section. Abstract: A revision of Chamaeleo caroliquarti Moody and Roček is presented. The comparisons of the holotypic left dentary with those of specimens subsequently assigned to C. caroliquarti and of the Recent species of Chamaeleo, Furcifer and Calumma is carried out. It is shown that the type dentaries of C. caroliquarti include two different morphotypes with the absence of unique features. Within the Recent chameleons, the exact determination of the individual species merely on the basis of the dentaries is impossible. The holotypic dentary of C. caroliquarti is basically identical with that of C. calyptratus. However, the same morphology of the dentary as present in C. caroliquarti is also present in other species of different genera such as Calumma globifer and Furcifer pardalis. The paratypic dentaries of C. caroliquarti have a different morphology to the holotype and are indistinguishable from that in the Recent C. chamaeleon. On the other hand, a new species of the genus Chamaeleo, C. andrusovi, is described on the basis of isolated cranial elements, which possess clear autapomorphic features. This material comes from the Lower Miocene (Ottnangian) zone MN 4 in the Dolnice locality of the Czech Republic, and it differs from Recent and fossil chameleons in the following combination of characters: (1) its typically developed strongly pustular ornamentation and its distribution on the external surfaces of the skull roofing bones; (2) the frontoparietal suture is digitiform with a well-developed, anteriorly directed mesial spine, and (3) the parietal bone narrows posteriorly at its midlength, it is not bowed dorsally and it does not contribute posteriorly to a dorsal sagittal crest. Abstract: The construction of the Neufeld tunnel in Bern city (2006–2008) led to the discovery of fossil mammals in the vicinity of the historical site of Engehalde. The study of the whole available sample led to the distinction of two mammal assemblages: (1) the historical level with the rhinocerotids Diaceratherium lemanense and D. aginense, and the ruminant Andegameryx cf. laugnacensis; (2) the Neufeld level with the artiodactyls Dremotherium feignouxi and Cainotherium sp., the carnivore Plesiogale angustifrons, and the glires Eucricetodon cf. aquitanicus, Peridyromys sp., and Prolagus vasconiensis. These two assemblages attest to a latest Aquitanian age (MN2b) for the last deposits of the ‘Lower Freshwater Molasse’ in the area. The palaeoecological analysis of the faunas indicates either the co-occurrence or the very short-termed succession of assorted terrestrial environments, ranging from forested habitats nearby water bodies or nearby steady rivers to open well-drained habitats within the hinterland. Abstract: A new species of Eomyops, Eomyops noeliae, is described. from the locality MT-20A (Morteral section, Magro basin, eastern Spain). It is intermediate in size between the large eomiid, E. hebeiseni, and the small species of the group E. catalaunicus, E. bodvanus and E. oppligeri. The age range is Lower Aragonian. MT-20A is located between deposits that contain Megacricetodon primitivus and M. collongensis. Morphologically, E. noeliae sp. nov. is clearly different from the rest of species of the genus, due to an important reduction of the lingual anteroloph of M1,2,3 and the labial anterolophid of M3. The lower incisor shows two parallel ridges along the enamel like the type species of the genus, E. catalaunicus. This character is basic for the distinction between Eomyops and the North American genus Leptodontomys. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Mokrá-Western Quarry exhibits the rare occurrence of Early Miocene (MN 4) vertebrate fauna within the area of the eastern part of Central Europe. In addition to a rich fauna of reptiles and mammals, two fossiliferous karst joints (Mokrá-Western Quarry, 1/2001 Turtle Joint and Mokrá-Western Quarry, 2/2003 Reptile Joint) yielded a rich fauna of amphibians including 13 amphibian taxa: Salamandridae: Mioproteus sp., Chelotriton sp., type I, Chelotriton sp., type II, Triturus aff. roehrsi, Triturus cf. marmoratus, Triturus sp. (T. cristatus species group), Chioglossa meini, Mertensiella mera, Salamandridae gen. and sp. indet.; Pelobatidae: Pelobates sanchizi; Ranidae: Rana sp. (synklepton Rana esculenta); Bufonidae: Bufo sp. The first records of the West European species Triturus cf. marmoratus and Chioglossa meini are reported from the eastern part of Central Europe indicating the wide distribution of those taxa throughout the whole of Europe as early as MN 4. The oldest known record of Pelobates sanchizi documents the Early Miocene presence of representatives closely related to the extinct Late Oligocene representatives of Pelobates. The slow evolution of amphibian species is documented by the presence of Triturus cf. marmoratus and the oldest known occurrence of the extinct salamander Mertensiella mera. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Fossils of an unnamed large suiform have been recovered from two Early Miocene localities in East Africa. The material is distinct from other species of the suborder, including the anthracothere Brachyodus aequatorialis, which is of similar size. The upper molars of the new form are bunodont, quadricuspidate (with a tiny paraconule), and have no buccal styles (parastyle, mesostyle, metastyle) and the enamel is thin and lightly wrinkled to smooth, which contrasts strongly with upper molars of Brachyodus which are pentacuspidate, selenodont, have pervasively wrinkled enamel and well-developed parastyle, mesostyle and metastyle. A new genus and species is erected for this suiform, which is most likely an anthracothere. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We describe unpublished material of the poorly known hyracoid, Brachyhyrax aequatorialis from the Early Miocene of Songhor and Koru, Kenya, on the basis of specimens stored in the Community Museums of Kenya, the National Museums of Kenya and the Natural History Museum, London. As a result, we added 17 specimens to the hypodigm of this species which was previously known from only seven specimens. In addition, we describe further material of another hyracoid, Afrohyrax championi, from the Early Miocene of Mfwangano and the Middle Miocene of Kipsaraman. The chronological distributions of the two hyracoids do not overlap. Brachyhyrax appears to have lived in forest environments, a suggestion supported by its brachyodont dentition and the associated molluscan fauna, whereas Afrohyrax seems to have lived in more open wooded habitats which agree with its slightly more hypsodont dentition and the cursorial postcranial skeleton as well as with the land snails that occur with it. Abstract: Three genera of hyracoids were recorded from the Early Miocene of East Africa by Whitworth [18], but there has been considerable divergence of opinion about their status. Despite differences in cranial and dental morphology from Megalohyrax and Bunohyrax, Whitworth [18] classified two species in these genera that are recorded from much earlier deposits (Early Oligocene) in the Fayum, Egypt. One of his genera (Meroehyrax) was new. His classification has been the subject of debate, with some researchers [6,13] doubting the hyracoid status of one of his species (Bunohyrax sp), and changing the generic status of another (Megalohyrax championi). Meyer [6] recorded a fourth genus (Prohyrax) from Kenya, linking it to material from Namibia described by Stromer [16,17]. New samples of two hyracoid species collected by the Uganda Palaeontology Expedition throw light on their systematic position and taxonomy. It is concluded that there are three hyracoid genera (Afrohyrax, Brachyhyrax and Meroehyrax) in the Early Miocene deposits of East Africa, the first two of which are new. Studies of fossil molluscs from Early Miocene deposits at Napak, Uganda, reveal that between 20 and 18.5 Ma, there were various kinds of palaeoenvironments on the flanks of the volcano ranging from forest to open country. The basal Iriri Member contains fluvial deposits from which freshwater gastropods and bivalves have been collected. The younger Napak Member is subaerial in facies, and has yielded a predominantly forest assemblage of gastropods, but with some indications of open country species at one of the sites. Napak has yielded a rich and diverse primate fauna, including the large ape Ugandapithecus major, the small ape Micropithecus clarki, the earliest known cercopithecid in the world (Prohylobates sp.) and several galagids (Mioeuoticus bishopi) among other less well-known taxa. The island of Lesvos, eastern Aegean, Greece is well known for the Neogene Petrified Forest of Sigri, situated in the southeastern part of island. The Miocene mammals were hitherto unknown in the island and the deinothere studied herein is the first evidence of their presence. The material was found near the village Gavathas in strongly silicified lacustrine marls. The morphological characters of the stutied teeth and their dimensions indicate that they belong to a primitive form of Prodeinotherium bavaricum. This fact together with the available radiometric ages of the volcanic rocks of the area suggests a minimum age of 18.4 Ma corresponding to the upper part of early Miocene or to late MN 3. The arrival and the dispersion of the deinotheres in Eurasia are also discussed and the Lesvos material represents the first known appearance of deinotheres in Europe. They arrived at the end of MN 3 (18.0–19.0 Ma) and they rapidly dispersed into Europe as their first occurrence in France and Spain is dated at the early MN 4 (18.0). Their first appearance in Asia seems to be earlier as they were traced in the Bugti fauna (Pakistan) dated at 20.5 Ma. Ougandatherium napakense nov. gen. nov. sp., the earliest Rhinocerotidae Iranotheriinae from Africa. The Uganda Palaeontology Expedition discovered an exceptionally rich fossiliferous channel deposit at Napak I, Karamoja, in 1999, which yielded two partial skeletons of a new genus and species of early Miocene Rhinocerotidae, together with various other mammals and gastropods typical of Faunal Set I of East Africa. The age of the deposits on the basis of both faunal correlation (biochronology) and radio-isotopic dating is ca 19–20 Ma. The new genus and species is a hornless rhinoceros about the size of a small horse, with long slender limb bones and metapodials and hypsodont upper cheek teeth whose enamel is undulate, and fossettes cement-filled. Upper premolars possess an inner wall; this is clearly an iranotheriine morphology. As such it is the earliest known African member of this subfamily, close to the oldest member of the subfamily recently discovered at Bugti in Pakistan, a site whose age is about the same. Fossil plants and terrestrial gastropods collected by the Uganda Palaeontology Expedition at Bukwa site I in 1997 and 1998, throw light on the palaeoenvironmental conditions that characterised the area during the end of the Early Miocene, some 17.5 Ma ago. Some of the evidence indicates the presence of grasslands in situ at the locality, but part of the fossil gastropod assemblage and some of the plants suggest the presence of woodland to forest nearby. A fossil angiosperm wood is described for the first time from the famous Early Miocene locality of Bı´lina. It represents a fossil elm wood, attributed to Ulmoxylon marchesonii Biondi. The fossil wood can be compared to extant North American soft elms, also to Ulmus macrocarpa Hance and U. parvifolia Jacq. from China or to the European common elm U. carpinifolia Gled. The wood together with fossil leaves/fruits of Ulmus pyramidalis Goeppert forms a single natural fossil species that lived in the Bı´lina area during the Early Miocene. The Lower Miocene deposits of the Bardenas Reales of Navarre (NW Ebro Basin, northern Iberian Peninsula) have yielded a diverse vertebrate fauna, including remains of amphibians and reptiles. These remains occur in several localities in the Tudela Formation. The fossiliferous levels belong to the Biozones MN2b-3 (Biozones Z-A of the Ramblian, i.e., Late Aquitanian to Early Burdigalian in age). The amphibians and reptiles represent at least 13 out of 37 vertebrate species. Amphibians consist of a salamandrid urodele and two or three anurans. All the turtles are cryptodirans and consist of the chelydrid Chelydropsis apellanizi, the testudinids Ptychogaster (Temnoclemmys) bardenensis and Ptychogaster ronheimensis, and a Trionychinae indet. Squamates are represented by the anguid lizard Ophisaurus sp., a non-anguid lacertilian, an amphisbaenian, the erycine boid? Eryx sp., and indeterminate colubrids. Crocodilian remains are assigned to the basal alligatoroid Diplocynodon sp. The fossil associations of the Bardenas Reales of Navarre suggest that the vertebrates lived in the centre of an endoreic basin with stretches of water under intertropical to subtropical climatic conditions. Since the late 1950''s, many ruminant specimens have been recovered from the Early Miocene volcano-sedimentary succession at Napak, Uganda. Beginning in 1958 when the first fossils were recognised by J.G. Wilson, and the subsequent surveys of Bishop and colleagues, more than 340 specimens have been found. Preliminary publications in the 1960''s identified three species, Dorcatherium songhorensis, Dorcatherium ? chappuisi, and Palaeomeryx africanus. Napak material hitherto identified as Dorcatherium ? chappuisi represents a new species of tragulid smaller than D. chappuisi, and is here identified as Dorcatherium iririensis nov. sp., while material previously assigned to Palaeomeryx is transferred to Walangania. A new finding for the site is the tiny tragulid, Dorcatherium parvum. There are thus four species of ruminants at Napak. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A new species of Hispanotherium from the Early Miocene of Spain is named. Its phylogenetic relationships within Elasmotheriina are discussed owing to a cladistic analysis. H. grimmi Heissig, 1974 and H. beonense Antoine, 1997 are consequently integrated in the genus Hispanotherium, together with the type species H. matritense and the new species, which differs from other ones by several dental and postcranial features.
