The Peruvian Province, from 6° S in Peru to 42° S in Chile, is a highly productive coastal marine region whose biology and fossil record have long been studied separately but never integrated. To understand how past events and conditions affected todays species composition and interactions, we examined the role of extinction, colonization, geologic changes to explain previously unrecognized peculiar features of the biota and to compare the Peruvian Provinces history to that of other climatically similar temperate coasts. We synthesized all available data on the benthic (or benthically feeding) biota, with emphasis on fossilizable taxa, for the interval from the Miocene (23-5.4 Ma) and Pliocene (5.4-2.5 Ma) to the present. We outline the history of ecological guilds including primary producers, herbivores, predators, and suspension-feeders and document patterns of extinction, colonization, and geographic restriction. We identify twelve unusual attributes of the biota, most of which are the result of repeated episodes of extinction. Several guilds present during the Miocene and Pliocene are not represented in the province today, while groups such as kelps and perhaps intertidal predatory sea stars are relative newcomers. Guilds on soft bottoms and in sheltered habitats were severely affected by extinction, whereas those on hard bottoms were most affected by colonists and held their own in diversity. The Peruvian Province has not served as a biogeographic refuge, in contrast to the coasts of Australasia and Argentina, where lineages no longer present in the Peruvian Province survive. The loss of sheltered habitats since the Pliocene explains many of the present-day peculiarities of the biota. The history of the provinces biota explains its unique attributes. High productivity, a rich Southern Hemisphere heritage, and colonization from the north account for the present-day composition and unusual characteristics of the biota.

Diatomite deposits of the lacustrine Truckee Formation near Hazen, Northern Nevada, are of Miocene age (ca. 10.3 million years old) and consist of varved deposits within commercial mines. These exposed deposits have been primary source of paleontological samples of stickleback fish fossils (Gasterosteous doryssus) spanning 100,000 years. These samples have revealed stasis, rapid morphological and genetic evolution, and local extinction of G. doryssus against a background of changing diatom communities. Here, we draw on geological, limnological, anthropogenic, and bibliographical data to illustrate the geographic and paleontological context of the Hazen diatomite deposits. We include a stratigraphic section describing lithology and stickleback specimen frequency at a 1 mm resolution. This paper should help researchers identify patterns in fossil site distribution and better understand the geological processes that have shaped the area, spurring new sampling and future research.

Objectives: The elbow of Nacholapithecus has been extensively described qualitatively, however its ulnar morphology has never been the focus of an in‐depth quantitative analysis before. Hence, our main aim is quantifying the proximal ulnar morphology in Nacholapithecus and exploring whether it is similar to those of Equatorius and Griphopithecus as previously reported. Materials and Methods: We compared Nacholapithecus proximal ulnar morphology with a sample of extant and extinct anthropoids through principal component analysis and agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis. Moreover, we calculated the Cophenetic Correlation Coefficient and checked for taxonomical group mean differences through MANOVA and pairwise post‐hoc comparisons, as well as the phylogenetic signal in the variables used. Results: The Nacholapithecus ulna displays a moderately long and relatively narrow olecranon, a relatively wide trochlear surface‐radial notch width, and a relatively thin sigmoid notch depth. These features resemble those of large papionins and chimpanzees, and some extinct taxa, mainly Equatorius. Discussion: Results presented here reinforce previous inferences on the functional morphology of the Nacholapithecus elbow, showing adaptations for general quadrupedal behaviors. However, other derived features (e.g., a relatively wide trochlear surface) might be associated with the ape‐like traits described for its distal humerus (e.g., wide trochlear groove), thus displaying a combination of primitive and derived features in the proximal ulna. Finally, affinities with large papionins could suggest the presence of some terrestrial habits in Nacholapithecus. However, the lack of evidence in the rest of the skeleton prevents us from suggesting terrestrial affinities in this taxon in a conclusive manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of regional studies of Early Miocene deposits in Western Ciscaucasia, based on the seismic stratigraphic analysis, are presented. The spatial pattern of sediment accumulation is analyzed and the paleogeographic conditions during the Late Miocene regressive stages in Western Ciscaucasia are refined. Erosional incisions of several levels, developed during the base-level fall in the course of major regressions in the studied time interval, were identified. Based on the spatial correlation of paleoincisions using a chosen series of intersecting seismic profiles, the buried Paleo-Don and Paleo-Donets river valleys were reconstructed at the Sarmatian‒Meotian boundaries and within the Meotian‒upper Pontian interval. The fossil record of the genus Carcharodon (Lamniformes: Lamnidae) dates to the late Oligocene and has a near global distribution. Today the genus is represented by a single species, the white shark Carcharodon carcharias. However, multiple extinct species are recognised in the Cenozoic including Carcharodon hastalis, Carcharodon hubbelli and Carcharodon planus comb. nov. Here we present the first occurrences of Carcharodon hubbelli and Carcharodon planus from New Zealand/Aotearoa, from the South Island/Te Waipounamu. Carcharodon hubbelli is previously reported from late Miocene deposits in the Pacific basin of North and South America, Asia, and Australia. Whereas Carcharodon planus has been reported from the Miocene of North America and Asia. One tooth from Carcharodon hubbelli is reported from the presumed late Miocene of Motunau Beach, North Canterbury, while one upper early Miocene tooth recovered from the Kakahu River, South Canterbury and an earliest Miocene tooth from the Big River mouth, Tasman District are referred to Carcharodon planus. In addition to being the first reported occurrences of these two species in New Zealand, the teeth of Carcharodon planus represent some of the earliest occurrences of the taxon as well as its southernmost occurrence. We here describe abundant new fossil material of amphibians and reptiles from different late Neogene localities of northern Greece: the Early Pliocene (MN 14) of Spilia 0, Spilia 1, and Spilia 2; the Early Pliocene (MN 15) of Spilia 3, Spilia 4, Spilia 5, and Vevi; and the Late Miocene or Pliocene of Chalicorrema and Rema Marmara. These new late Neogene herpetofaunas are highly diverse, documenting a considerably rich herpetofauna allowing the identification of at least two salamander, seven frog, two turtle, seven lizard, and eight snake taxa. Salamanders are represented by the salamandrid genera Ommatotriton and Ichthyosaura. Frogs are represented by the bombinatorid Bombina, the discoglossids Latonia cf. ragei and Latonia sp., the pelobatid Pelobates aff. praefuscus and Pelobates sp., the ranids Pelophylax and Rana cf. dalmatina, the hylid Hyla gr. arborea, and the bufonid Bufotes gr. viridis. Turtles are represented by the emydid Emys and an indeterminate geoemydid. Lizards are represented by the scincid Ophiomorus, two lacertids (one of which potentially pertaining to Lacerta), amphisbaenians, agamids, the anguid Pseudopus, and a potential varanid. Snakes are represented by the erycid Eryx, the natricid Natrix aff. rudabanyaensis, a small-sized elapid, an "Oriental viper", the colubriforms Periergophis and Paraxenophis, as well as two further distinct but still indeterminate morphotypes of colubriforms. For the material from Spilia tentatively referred to Ommatotriton, this is only the third occurrence in the fossil record globally. The new material of Ichthyosaura and Bombina mark the first documentation of these genera in the Greek fossil record. Abundant cranial and postcranial material from Spilia is tentatively referred to Latonia ragei, a taxon previously known from the Early Miocene of Western Europe. The new record of Pelobates represents the oldest documented occurrences of the genus in the Greek fossil record. Interestingly, the Pelobates from Spilia bears much resemblance to an extinct taxon, Pelobates aff. praefuscus, which is otherwise known from the Late Miocene of the Caucasus, and not to the extant species that currently inhabits the area. The identification of Pelophylax and Rana adds to the rather poor Neogene record of ranids from Greece. Particularly for the case of Rana cf. dalmatina from Spilia 4, this corresponds to the only documented occurrence of this extant taxon in the Greek fossil record. Similarly, the identification of Hyla gr. arborea in Spilia 1, Spilia 3, and Spilia 4, marks only the third documented occurrence of this genus in the Greek fossil record. The Bufotes material from Spilia 1, Spilia 3, and Spilia 4 represents the first documented fossil occurrence of the extant Bufotes viridis complex in Greece. The material of Emys gr. orbicularis from Vevi marks the only known pre-Quaternary record of the genus in Greece and one of the only few Neogene members of the genus known from Europe. The scincid Ophiomorus is identified in Spilia 4, known from several cranial and postcranial remains, well outside the extant range of the genus. Practically, the Spilia Ophiomorus is only the fourth known fossil occurrence of this extant genus globally and also represents one of its oldest known occurrences. Material from Spilia 1 and Spilia 3 is tentatively referred to cf. Lacerta sp., and this would mark the first known occurrence of this emblematic extant genus in the Greek fossil record, denoting the presence of the genus since at least the Early Pliocene. The new amphisbaenian specimens from Spilia 4 add to the recently described single vertebra from the same locality, and represent the youngest occurrence of amphisbaenians from continental Eastern Europe. The new agamid material from Vevi and Chalicorrema add substantially to the record of this group, which was in Greece so far known exclusively from the latest Miocene/earliest Pliocene of Maramena. A similarly important addition is the record of Pseudopus from Spilia 4, as this genus had been known in the Greek fossil record only from a very few localities. The potential varanid from Spilia represents one of the few Pliocene occurrences of this group in Europe. We identify Natrix aff. rudabanyaensis among the material from Spilia 0, Spilia 4, and Vevi, adding to the previously known record of this taxon from Maramena, however, its precise species level assignment should await a revision of Neogene European Natrix spp. The find of a small elapid from Spilia 4 represents the youngest occurrence of a coral snake from Europe, extending their statigraphic range up to the Early Pliocene (MN 14). Periergophis and Paraxenophis, two bizarre snakes, so far exclusively known from their type locality in Maramena, could be also present here, even if tentatively identified. Most notably, the new material from these localities comprises forms that are now extinct (e.g., Periergophis and Paraxenophis) or extirpated from Europe (e.g., Latonia, Varanidae, Elapidae) but at the same time also loudly attests the emergence of the extant genera that dominate the extant herpetofaunas of Greece (Ichthyosaura, Bombina, Pelobates, Pelophylax, Rana, Hyla, Bufotes, Emys, Ophiomorus, Lacerta, Pseudopus, Eryx, and Natrix), for some of which their fossil record is documented here for the first time in the area. This is the second of a two-part New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics Special Issue on understanding sedimentary systems in Aotearoa-New Zealand's Hikurangi Subduction Margin (HSM). This volume includes six research papers that explore sediment-tectonic interactions operating over a range of spatio-temporal scales. We take a distinctive perspective moving from the subduction deformation front in the Hikurangi Trough, upslope to the subduction wedge, and onshore to the Coastal Ranges. Temporally, papers span the onset of subduction in the Miocene, to disentangling provenance of turbidity currents triggered by the 2016 CE Kaikōura Earthquake. Collectively, the studies in the special issue reveal a complicated and continually evolving margin, where active tectonics and volcanism, coupled with vigorous climatic and oceanographic drivers, modulate erosion, transport, and depositional cycles of vast volumes of terrigenous sediment into ocean basins. Despite decades of significant research advances in our knowledge of the HSM, considerable scope remains for future work. A deeper understanding of fundamental tectonic-sediment interactions operating on active margins, along with the significant geohazards they pose remain outstanding research needs. ABSTRACT The warm Miocene (23.0–5.3 Ma) is considered a model case for the global climate of the near future. In view of the current coral reef crisis, studies on Miocene reefs can contribute to predictions regarding the stress resilience of today's reefs against global warming. A Late Miocene (6.2–5.5 Ma) reef coral fauna from Hispaniola Island (Caribbean) characterised by ecologically tolerant taxa was originally interpreted to reflect cool‐eutrophic waters. However, the associated planktonic foraminifer assemblage and new TEX86H–based temperature reconstructions document an oligotrophic shallow‐water environment harbouring 30–31°C. Thus, in conjunction with unusually low vertical growth rates and erratic trace element signatures of massive reef corals, the coral fauna documents critically high temperatures and a response to heat stress rather than cool upwelling. The findings demonstrate the relevance of understanding shallow‐water ecosystems from past warm periods for developing scenarios of a future, warmer world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present-day Indo-Pacific coral-reef settings two genera of alveolinoidean porcelaneous larger benthic foraminifera (LBF) occur, namely Alveolinella and Borelis. Alveolinella is represented by a single species, A. quoyi , whose northernmost record is in Okinawa-jima (central Ryukyu Islands, Japan). Although the Indo-Pacific area, and especially the Coral Triangle, is a biodiversity hotspot since the Early Miocene, in-depth investigation on fossil representatives of present-day LBF is limited to a few taxa. To help bridge this knowledge gap, the palaeobiogeographical dynamics of A. quoyi is assessed. Analysis of data from the palaeontological literature shows that its first appearance datum is from the Tortonian (Late Miocene) of East Kalimantan and Papua New Guinea. In the Pliocene–Pleistocene the Indonesian Throughflow constrained the species within the Central Indo-Pacific. Finally, during the Late Pliocene the northward migrants arrived in the shallow-water carbonate settings of Okinawa-jima where the species is still thriving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and aimsCAM photosynthesis is hypothesized to have evolved in atmospheres of low CO2 concentration in recent geological time because of its ability to concentrate CO2 around Rubisco and boost water use efficiency relative to C3 photosynthesis. We assess this hypothesis by compiling estimates of when CAM clades arose using phylogenetic chronograms for 73 CAM clades. Despite often being referred to as a ‘coolhouse climate’, the climate during the Miocene (23.03–5.33 Ma) was overall humid, warm and temperate. It was paced by orbitally driven cooler periods (the Oligocene–Miocene Transition and Mi-events) overprinted by a climatic optimum. Global cooling during the Late Miocene brought more arid conditions with climate seasonality, which varied across western Eurasia. Sedimentary archives from onshore Denmark comprise shallow marine siliciclastic deposits and discrete brown coal layers. Hence, they allow us to infer past climates and environments using both marine and terrestrial fossils. The backbone for Miocene stratigraphy and palaeoclimate reconstruction in the eastern North Sea Basin (present-day Denmark) is the Sønder (Sdr.) Vium sediment core, which penetrates a shallow marine succession and spans an interval from c. 22 to 8 Ma. Here, we present an improved age model for the core. During the Miocene, forested lowlands predominated in the eastern North Sea Basin. Coastal areas included rich riparian landscapes and delta areas of lignite-forming swamp forest. Compilations of existing proxy records (pollen, spores, leaves, plant fragments and the organic biomarkers alkenones and membrane lipids) collectively show that the climate here was warm and moist during the Early and Middle Miocene, while the Late Miocene was characterised by climate cooling and modernisation of the vegetation. The interval preceding the Miocene Climatic Optimum was already warm and moist, and the onset was not characterised by a significant increase in temperature and precipitation. Instead, the palynoflora indicates homogeneous vegetation and only a weak signal of warming shown by a minor increase of, for example, sabaloid palms and Mastixiaceae.

The ~2,000-km-long Central Range of New Guinea is a hotspot of modern carbon sequestration due to the chemical weathering of igneous rocks with steep topography in the warm wet tropics. These high mountains formed in a collision between the Australian plate and ophiolite-bearing volcanic arc terranes, but poor resolution of the uplift and exhumation history has precluded assessments of the impact on global climate change. Here, we develop a palinspastic reconstruction of the Central Range orogen with existing surface geological constraints and seismic data to generate time-temperature paths and estimate volumes of eroded material. New (U-Th)/He thermochronology data reveal rapid uplift and regional denudation between 10 and 6 Mya. Erosion fluxes from the palinspastic reconstruction, calibrated for time with the thermochronological data, were used as input to a coupled global climate and weathering model. This model estimates 0.6 to 1.2 °C of cooling associated with the Late Miocene rise of New Guinea due to increased silicate weathering alone, and this CO2 sink continues to the present. Our data and modeling experiments support the hypothesis that tropical arc-continent collision and the rise of New Guinea contributed to Neogene cooling due to increased silicate weathering.

A taxonomic revision of the Tribe Aequipectini from the upper Burdigalian, Lower Miocene Pirabas Formation in Brazil) resulted in an identification of Leptopecten daideleus comb. nov., Perapecten tetristriatus and description of Iemanjavola monlafertei gen. et sp. nov. The genus Perapecten is re-validated, P. tetristriatus being the first fossil representative of the genus, extending it back to the Early Miocene of the western Atlantic Ocean and Middle Miocene–Pliocene Perapecten scabrellus from the Mediterranean Sea/Central Paratethys is included into Perapecten. We also reported the oldest record of Leptopecten, which along with Perapecten, seem to have originated in the Early Miocene tropical region of the western Atlantic Ocean. Leptopecten dispersed during the Middle or Late Miocene to the eastern Pacific through the Central American Seaway, while Perapecten spread across the North Atlantic into Europe via the Circumtropical Current and the Gulf Stream/North Atlantic Drift.

The shelf‐margin deltas are the primary 'sources' of interest in siliceous submarine fan source‐to‐sink systems. However, less has yet to be discovered about the roles and effects of the shallow water platform situated on continental slopes. Using the Miocene sediments of the Ledong‐Lingshui Sag in the western part of the Qiongdongnan Basin (QDNB), this paper studies the YC35 coarse‐grained submarine fan that developed in the Meishan Formation (Fm.). The material sources, depositional characteristics, and developmental mechanisms of this fan were investigated. The restored palaeogeomorphology, based on high‐resolution 3D seismic data, shows that a shallow water platform exists. According to geochemical palaeoenvironmental data, the shallow water platform was ideal for forming carbonate deposits in the Meishan Fm., owing to the warm and humid palaeoclimate and the shifting trend in palaeowater depth. Based on the combined source tracing of heavy minerals, coherence slices, and seismic profiles, the shallow water platform and the Ningyuan River source on Hainan Island contributed to the YC35 coarse‐grained submarine fan. Compared to submarine fans formed during different periods, coarse‐grained fan stands out due to its distinct sedimentary structure, rock composition, and microlithological characteristics. Aside from not following the usual Bowmar sequence, there is an excess of gravel and no clear bedding or lamination. A large number of rock fragments, mostly granite and sedimentary rock (carbonatite), make up the rock composition. According to these results, the shallow water platform significantly affects submarine fan material composition. In addition, the attribute slice based on the root mean square reveals that shallow water platforms moderate peripheral deposition. We attribute the development and proximal supply of the shallow water platform to diapirism and forced regression. The present work deals with the carnivorans found in five Neogene localities in eastern Romania: the Vallesian locality of Păun, the Turolian localities of Pogana 1 and Creţeşti 1, and the Ruscinian localities of Bereşti and Măluşteni. The presented material includes cranial and postcranial specimens, some of which are herein described for the first time. This study includes a re-description and re-depiction of the type material of Lutra rumana Simionescu, 1922 and Promephitis malustenensis Simionescu, 1930, in order to clarify the taxonomic position of these two enigmatic taxa. The carnivoran faunal lists of all five localities are reviewed offering interesting insights into the temporospatial range of the discovered forms. Most localities have only yielded a limited number of species, except for Măluşteni, which shows evidence of at least nine different coexisting forms. Notable occurrences in terms of biostratigraphy include Paludolutra sp. in Pogana 1, Protictitherium crassum (Depéret, 1892) in Creţeşti 1, and a phocid from Măluşteni. This review aims to aid the understanding of the Neogene ecosystems in the north of the Paratethys in terms of faunal contents, biostratigraphy and palaeoecology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The late Neogene megatooth shark, Otodus megalodon (Lamniformes: Otodontidae), is mostly known for its gigantic teeth and vertebrae. Re-examination of the rock matrix surrounding a previously described associated tooth set of O. megalodon from the upper Miocene of Japan resulted in the observation of numerous fragments of tessellated calcified cartilage and placoid scales. The morphology of each tessera and the arrangement of overall tessellated calcified cartilage are practically identical to those of extant chondrichthyans. Many placoid scales possess pronounced, rather broadly-spaced keels. A quantitative relationship between interkeel distances of keeled scales and reported cruising speeds across extant pelagic lamniforms and carcharhiniforms suggests that O. megalodon with a representative interkeel distance of ca. 100 µm was not a fast swimmer. We propose that O. megalodon was generally a slow cruising shark with occasional burst swimming for prey capture, where much of its metabolic heat through regional endothermy was possibly used to facilitate the digestion of large pieces of ingested meat as well as absorbing and processing nutrients. If so, the relative importance of the functional roles of regional endothermy possibly shifted from maintaining high cruising speeds to visceral food processing through the evolution towards gigantism in otodontids. Since discovery and description of the species, Sahelanthropus tchadensis has been at the centre of a great discussion around its classification as a hominin - the first of our lineage - or an ape. Many studies have been conducted in order to clarify this question, especially studies based on the morphology of the cranium and the post-cranial remains. In this study, we analysed the posterior dentition of S. tchadensis in relation to those of other hominins and chimpanzees, using a multivariate comparative metric analysis. Our results suggest that the posterior dentition of the Chad material lies in the range of well-established early Plio-Pleistocene hominins, supporting its classification as part of the hominin lineage. Phenotypic plasticity can be adaptive in fluctuating environments by providing rapid environment–phenotype matching and this applies particularly in seasonal environments. African Bicyclus butterflies have repeatedly colonized seasonal savannahs from ancestral forests around the late Miocene, and many species now exhibit seasonal polyphenism. On a macroevolutionary scale, it can be expected that savannah species will exhibit higher plasticity because of experiencing stronger environmental seasonality than forest species. We quantified seasonality using environmental niche modeling and surveyed the degree of plasticity in a key wing pattern element (eyespot size) using museum specimens. We showed that species occurring in highly seasonal environments display strong plasticity, while species in less seasonal or aseasonal environments exhibit surprisingly variable degrees of plasticity, including strong to no plasticity. Furthermore, eyespot size plasticity has a moderate phylogenetic signal and the ancestral Bicyclus likely exhibited some degree of plasticity. We propose hypotheses to explain the range of plasticity patterns seen in less seasonal environments and generate testable predictions for the evolution of plasticity in Bicyclus. Our study provides one of the most compelling cases showing links between seasonality and phenotypic plasticity on a macroevolutionary scale and the potential role of plasticity in facilitating the colonization of novel environments. Subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forest (EBLF) is the predominant vegetation type in eastern China. However, the majority of the region it covers in eastern China was an arid area during the Paleogene. The temporal history and essential factors involved in the evolution of subtropical EBLFs in eastern China remain enigmatic. Here we report on the niche evolution of Quercus section Cyclobalanopsis, which appeared in south China and Japan during the Eocene and became a dominant component of subtropical EBLFs since the Miocene in eastern Asia, using integrative analysis of occurrences, climate data and a dated phylogeny of 35 species in Cyclobalanopsis. Species within clades Cyclobalanoides, Lamellosa, and Helferiana mainly exist in the Himalaya–Hengduan region, adapting to a plateau climate, while species within the other clades mainly live in eastern China under the control of the East Asian monsoon. Reconstructed history showed that significant divergence of climatic tolerance in Cyclobalanopsis began around 19 million years ago (Ma) in the early Miocene. Simultaneously, disparities in precipitation of wettest/warmest quarter and annual precipitation were markedly enhanced in Cyclobalanopsis, especially in the recent eastern clades. During the Miocene, the marked radiation of Cyclobalanopsis and many other dominant taxa of subtropical EBLFs strongly suggest the rapid formation and expansion of subtropical EBLFs in eastern China. Our research highlights that the intensification of the East Asian monsoon and subsequent occupation of new niches by the ancient clades already present in the south may have jointly promoted the formation of subtropical EBLFs in eastern China since the early Miocene. Chalicotheriidae fossils from Siwaliks have played an important part in the palaeontological history of chalicotheres. For example, the recovered specimen represents the features of Anisodon and Chalicotherium. First, the dual features of the molar are described. A review of the characters supports Chalicotherium sp. for this specimen. Second, the description and comparison of this specimen enhance the knowledge of the subcontinent chalichotheres. Moreover, it gives us better aspects for the morphometric features of the genera Anisodon and Chalicotherium. Travertines are terrestrial carbonates that are commonly associated with fault activity in extensional and transtensional basins. The faults serve as conduits for the rising and mixing of carbonate‐enriched fluids with thermal and meteoric CO2 inputs promoting travertine precipitation at the surface. Therefore, travertine successions provide key constraint on the faulting, depositional environments, fluid flow and climate. This work focuses on the travertine succession in the Miocene Levač Basin, the marginal basin of the Morava Corridor situated at the junction of the Dinarides and the southernmost Carpathians. Detailed sedimentological, geochronological (U–Pb age, laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry) and structural analyses of the travertines are used to reconstruct the evolution of the feeding geoothermal system. Furthermore, these data were used to understand the controlling factors governing alternation of fluid flows enriched in thermally generated and meteoric CO2, and precipitation of travertines in Levač Basin, and finally to elucidate the late stage of basin evolution. Four facies associations are distinguished within the succession, i.e. travertine slope, ridge, flat, and travertine flat under the fluvial influence. The results demonstrated that travertine deposition was controlled by north‐west/south‐west and north‐east/south‐east normal fault arrays. Stable isotope data show positive δ13C values (with δ18O being negative) shifting to negative in the distal and stratigraphically younger deposits implying dilution of deep hydrothermal fluids by mixing with meteoric waters. Finally, travertine deposits yielded a new U–Pb age of ca 14 Ma indicating that the Middle Miocene extensional phase known from other intermountain basins in the Dinarides reached as far east as the Levač Basin and Morava Corridor. Late Cretaceous-Miocene foraminiferas were recovered from the BG-1 well in the offshore Eastern Dahomey Basin. Four (4) lithostratigraphic units comprising Ogwashi-Asaba, Upper Araromi, Lower Araromi and Afowo Formations have been delineated and assigned based on the textural characteristics of the sediments. Forty-nine (49) foraminiferal species were identified, with a total count of 47 calcareous species (96%) comprising both planktonic and benthic forms and two arenaceous forms (3%). Seven (7) foraminiferal zones were recognised and dated from the Upper Cenomanian to Late Miocene age. The Globotruncana aegyptica zone, marked by the disappearance of the Maastrichtian forms at 3060 ft, coincided with the appearance of the Early Paleocene benthic forms such at the Anomalinoides umboniferus- Anomalinoides midwayensis zone. The Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary was recognised at 3060 ft. Seven MFSs and SBs dated from the Upper Cenomanian and Upper Miocene ages were identified in the sequence stratigraphic analysis. The stacking patterns of the lowstand and highstand systems tracts reveal the interplay of progradational and aggradational parasequence signatures of siltstones and sandstone lithologies. The paleodepositional sedimentary packages of the BG-1 well are recognised from the Inner-Neritic to Bathyal environment. The sequence stratigraphic integration of lithofacies and foraminifera assemblages in this study has created a model of the distribution of the elements in the hydrocarbon system of the offshore Eastern Dahomey basin. Therefore, this study will underscore the critical role of sequence biostratigraphy in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of exploration and development efforts in the hydrocarbon industry. Lygodactylus is the most speciose gekkonid group in Africa, with several additional, candidate species already identified from previous studies. However, in mainland Africa, several groups remain only partially resolved, and there are several taxonomic inconsistencies. Lygodactylus gutturalis was described from Guinea-Bissau in the 1870s and since then, the species has been recorded from West to East Africa, and it is widely distributed through different biomes and ecoregions. However, this taxon has never been studied in detail. In this work, we use an integrative approach, including molecular phylogenetic analysis, morphometrics, skull osteology, and biogeography to provide the first systematic revision of the L. gutturalis species complex. The L. gutturalis complex is a subgroup within the L. picturatus group and includes nine well-differentiated species. We elevate Lygodactylus gutturalis dysmicus to full species status, recognize Lygodactylus depressus as the sister species to L. gutturalis , describe five new species (Lygodactylus kibera sp. nov. , Lygodactylus karamoja sp. nov. , Lygodactylus mirabundus sp. nov. , Lygodactylus leopardinus sp. nov. and Lygodactylus gamblei sp. nov.), and propose an additional candidate species that requires further research. Also, in order to shed light on some taxonomic inconsistencies between the L. gutturalis and Lygodactylus angularis groups, we revisit the L. angularis group, within which we elevate Lygodactylus angularis heeneni and Lygodactylus angularis paurospilus to full species status. The L. gutturalis subgroup diversified during the Late Miocene (between 5–15 Mya), probably as a consequence of multiple vicariant events driven by the expansion of the African savannahs and the establishment of climatic refugia. This field study records that the Tortonian phosphatic hardground at S'Algar, Menorca has a diverse fossil macrobenthic fauna dominated by bivalves. These faunal elements occur in four preservational forms (A–D). Each taphonomic form within the hardground is characterised by different concentrations of Entobia isp. (clionaid sponge boring) and encrustation. The preservational forms have specific fossil macrofaunas associated with them, and the hardground represents a melange of bioclasts derived from different environments on the Menorcan Miocene shelf. These habitats are influenced by the upwelling event that provides the conditions for hardground mineralisation. A Glycymeris - Crassatella - Clypeaster association (A) records part of a fauna that lived on the upper ramp slope that was periodically affected by high energy and low oxygen conditions due to upwelling waters. The smaller sized fauna (B), characterised by an arcid-carditid-venerid association is derived from the middle ramp that was affected by storms and a more persistent westward flowing current that intermittently drove upwelling. The fragmentary and disarticulated nature of both faunas indicates that they were mixed within the hardground via reworking processes driven by these seafloor energy regimes. Some of the large gastropod taxa, dentition-up Glycymeris and Gastrochaena suggest that the hardground had its own fauna. Preservation A fauna and other opportunistic taxa inhabited an environment where the hardground was exposed on the Miocene seafloor as 'islands' surrounded by thin layers of looser sediment. Phosphatic bioclasts in the underlying limestone indicate that similar mineralised beds were formed elsewhere on the shelf prior to the formation of the studied outcrop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we describe so far unpublished proboscidean specimens from several Late Miocene localities of Romania. A partial mandible and the complete upper/lower cheek tooth rows of a deinothere individual from the site of Gherghești 1 belong to Deinotherium proavum and comprise one of the few examples of entire cheek tooth rows of the same individual of this species. Gherghești 1 is geographically close to Mânzaţi from where the celebrated skeleton of "Deinotherium gigantissimum" was discovered at the end of the nineteenth century, and thus further highlights the importance of Romania in the study of this emblematic deinothere. Deinotherium proavum represents the last deinothere species in Europe and corresponds to the terminal stage of the size increase characterizing the evolution of European deinotheres. Two zygodont molars are attributed to the rare "Mammut" cf. obliquelophus and add to the scarce record of "Mammut" in the Miocene of Eurasia. They document the secure presence of "Mammut" in the Miocene of Romania. The small size of the studied molars compared to known specimens of the Pliocene "Mammut" borsoni and the weak development of the distal cingulum in the lower third molars may have taxonomic and biostratigraphic importance. Furthermore, the presence of an amebelodontid is documented by a large-sized and dorsoventrally flattened lower tusk fragment that shows tubular dentine in its inner part and is attributed to the tetralophodont shovel-tusker Konobelodon. Chalicotheres are enigmatic perissodactyls that had large claws instead of hooves. The present study concerns the material of Chalicotheriidae from the Late Miocene hominid locality of Hammerschmiede in Germany. The HAM 5 fossil site (11.62 Ma) consists of six isolated dental and postcranial chalicothere elements. Based on the morphology and dimensions of the dentition, the material can be assigned to the chalicotheriine Anisodon sp. This genus is the most common representative of Chalicotheriidae in Central Europe during the Middle Miocene but becomes much rarer during the Late Miocene. The HAM 4 fossil site (11.44 Ma) has yielded a patella belonging to a schizotheriine and a skull fragment that could possibly also belong to a schizotheriine. Thus, the schizotheriine and the chalicotheriine occur in different horizons in Hammerschmiede. Both taxa probably had a rather similar diet but different locomotion, and their disparate occurrences are most plausibly associated with environmental differences among the two fossiliferous levels. The Early Miocene witnessed major tectonic, palaeoceanographic and climatological reorganizations over the Asian realm. The Himalayan and Tibetan plateau upliftment influenced monsoon intensity during this age. Contemporary high‐resolution tropical hydroclimate records are limited. Here, we present an early Miocene sub‐annual stable isotope record from the growth bands of well‐preserved Turritella sp. from the Kachchh basin, Western India. It showed δ13C and δ18O variabilities from −4.83‰ to −1.80‰ and − 7.06‰ to −2.66‰ (in VPDB) respectively. Conventional oxygen isotope thermometry showed an apparent temperature seasonality from 9.3° to 28.1°C. A comparison of the present early Miocene δ18O record with the modern δ18O records in the carbonates from coastal‐estuarine environments of the Indian Ocean confirmed a high freshwater influx into the NE Arabian Sea during the early Miocene, similar to the modern‐day freshwater plume events observed in the coastal region. A new species of Psychodidae is described by a well-preserved adult male trapped in Miocene amber from Simojovel, Chiapas, Mexico. Investigations of calcareous nannofossils were done on the Serikagni Formation in the southern limb of the Sinjar anticline northwest of Iraq, specifics of the identification process's investigation (18 species of calcareous nannofossils belonging to 10 genera). Two biozones were proposed in this study based on their stratigraphic distribution, and they are as follows: Triquetrorhabdulus carinatus partial range Biozone CN1 and Sphenolithus belemnos Interval Biozone CN2. Correlation with other calcareous nannofossil biozones from regional schemes led to the conclusion that the Serikagni Formation's age is Early Miocene (Aquitanian)in the studied sections. It can conclude from higher speciation for calcareous nannofossils that the bloom at the Miocene because of increased temperature impacts climate change on the warm ocean's ecosystem. The genus Neosimnia P. Fisher, 1884, is reported for the first time from Indonesia in the form of several fossil species, recovered together from the Miocene deposits of Tasikmalaya, West Java. The species described closely resemble their current Atlantic counterparts, of which they exhibit all the modern characteristics. Nevertheless, they are undoubtedly new to science, as no living or fossil specimens of this genus are known from the Indian Ocean or the Western Pacific Region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Bozburun coalfield hosts a late Miocene 1.1 m thick coal seam. This study aims to determine coal quality, mineralogy, petrography and geochemistry, and controlling factors of elemental enrichments. The coals are generally black and greyish black in colour, and the low part of the seam commonly includes fossil shell remains. The ash yield displays a decreasing trend towards the upper part of the seam; in turn, gross calorific and total C values increase upwards. The total S content being generally higher than 5% (on dry basis), displays an increasing trend towards the upper part. In the entire seam, huminite is the most common maceral group, while inertinite and liptinite display variable proportions. The identified minerals by XRD are mainly quartz, clay minerals, calcite, pyrite, and aragonite (in fossil shell remains-bearing samples), whereas feldspars and marcasite determined in a few samples. Furthermore, in the coal samples, celestine and barite were identified by SEM-EDX. This study indicates that precipitation of celestine and Sr-bearing barite grains during diagenetic stage and Sr-uptake by mollusc within the palaeomire caused Sr enrichment in the entire seam. Overall, the water influx and redox conditions controlled the mineralogical and the elemental compositions of the coal seam.

Clubtail dragonfly Lindenia heeri sp. nov., is described and figured as the first fossil representative of the extant lindeniine genus Lindenia, based on a finely preserved forewing from the mid-Miocene lacustrine maar of Öhningen, Germany. The new species differs from the type and only species of Lindenia tetraphylla in the dark brown pterostigma covering ten cells vs. only five. Otherwise its forewing venation is identical to that of the modern species. The paleoclimatic data fit well with the climatic preferences of extant Lindenia tetraphylla, consistent with the generally warmer climate of that region during that period of time, allowing for more Mediterranean or even subtropical elements of the flora and fauna to persist.

Nucella demouthae n. sp. is a new muricid described from the late Miocene part of the Wilson Grove Formation in Sonoma County, central California. It is distinguished from other modern and fossil California Nucella by its small size with faint to moderately strong  radial sculpture, and its thickened and recurved outer lip with two denticles in the aperture. This rocky shore predatory gastropod has been found only at Bloomfield Quarry, north of the town of Bloomfield in Sonoma County, in the lowest part of the Wilson Grove Formation, which has been dated between 9.3 and 6.2 Ma, this time period falling within the late Miocene “Jacalitos” California provincial molluscan stage.

Three Caecidae species from two genera have been recovered from the late Miocene “Imperial” Formation exposed in Super Creek, north and slightly east of Whitewater, Riverside County, southern California. These specimens record the first fossil Caecidae from California older than Pleistocene. The three taxa are Caecum brasilicum de Folin, 1874, Meioceras nitidum (Stimpson, 1851), and a new species of Caecum named C. roederi n. sp., in honor of friend and colleague Mark Roeder. Caecum brasilicum and M. nitidum occur today in the central-western Atlantic Ocean and their previous fossil occurrences are also there. The occurrence of these Atlantic species in the “Imperial” Formation is not surprising as > 8% of the Super Creek fauna has a Caribbean origin at the species level because of the then submerged Panama seaway that allowed water from the western Atlantic to flow freely into the eastern Pacific.

The Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii) is an endemic bovid of the Tibetan Plateau, which was, until recently, considered an endangered species. Researchers have long speculated on the evolutionary origin of Pantholops, suggesting a connection to the rare fossil bovid Qurliqnoria. However, the lack of adequate fossil samples has prevented the testing of this deep-time endemism hypothesis for eight decades. Here, we report new fossils of Qurliqnoria cheni from the northern Tibetan Plateau, substantially increasing the amount of morphological data that can be brought to bear on the question of Tibetan antelope evolution. Phylogenetic analysis supports a Pantholops-Qurliqnoria clade and suggests that this lineage has been endemic to the Plateau for 11 Myr. Recent morphological and molecular studies that support the outgroup position of Pantholops relative to caprins (goats and relatives) and the fossil record of stem bovids from Europe together suggest that the Qurliqnoria-Pantholops lineage is likely to have dispersed to the Tibetan Plateau 15-11 Mya. Furthermore, the harsh environmental conditions to which Pantholops has adapted are likely to extend back to the time of its evolutionary origin. These findings provide an important new context for conservation management and research into the near-threatened Tibetan antelope, as the longest-living endemic member of the Tibetan Plateau fauna.

A taxonomic revision of the Tribe Aequipectini from the upper Burdigalian, Lower Miocene Pirabas Formation in Brazil) resulted in an identification of Leptopecten daideleus comb. nov., Perapecten tetristriatus and description of Iemanjavola monlafertei gen. et sp. nov. The genus Perapecten is re-validated, P. tetristriatus being the first fossil representative of the genus, extending it back to the Early Miocene of the western Atlantic Ocean and Middle Miocene-Pliocene Perapecten scabrellus from the Mediterranean Sea/Central Paratethys is included into Perapecten. We also reported the oldest record of Leptopecten, which along with Perapecten, seem to have originated in the Early Miocene tropical region of the western Atlantic Ocean. Leptopecten dispersed during the Middle or Late Miocene to the eastern Pacific through the Central American Seaway, while Perapecten spread across the North Atlantic into Europe via the Circumtropical Current and the Gulf Stream/North Atlantic Drift. Thousands of coprolites have been collected from the Upper Miocene (Tortonian/Pannonian) sands of the Pécs-Danitzpuszta sand pit, one of the most important mixed Neogene vertebrate localities in Hungary. Although, the locality has been known for centuries, the coprolites have not been investigated in detail. We describe these fossils and explore their palaeoecological significance. Coprolites were examined with thin sections, X-ray powder diffraction and computed tomography. Their surface is mostly smooth, desiccation cracks were not observed. All coprolites mainly consist of apatite, indicating most probably a carnivorous diet. No evidence of herbivory has been found so far. The coprolites contain remains belonging to several groups: ostracod carapaces, bivalve shells, vertebrae from bony fishes, fish scales, as well as teeth. The CT scans show inhomogeneities in the matrix; however, in most cases they do not reliably indicate inclusions. The taphonomical features suggest rapid burial and most likely an aquatic origin. The spiral morphotype could be attributed to fishes with spiral intestinal valves. Teeth of reef-associated fish taxa indicate Badenian age for some specimens, though the coprolite assemblage might include older and younger specimens as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Micropaleontology can give important insights into the provenance and paleoenvironmental conditions in terrestrial sedimentary archives. For the current study, 84 samples representing a 2.6 km thick sedimentary profile from the Simply Folded Zagros Mountain Belt were investigated. They span ca. 10.2 my from the late Middle Miocene (Serravallian) to the earliest Pleistocene (Gelasian), and comprise floodplain sediments and saline mudstones with an aeolian contribution. The samples revealed a unique Cretaceous radiolarian assemblage comprising largely of cryptothoracic nassellarians and spherical spumellarians. This record highlights the reworking of sediments derived from Cretaceous Qulqula-Kermanshah radiolarian claystones and radiolarites in the Imbricated Zagros Belt into distal Neogene Zagros foreland sediments in Lurestan (Lurestan Arc). The high abundance of Holocryptocanium barbui (Dumitrica) and other cryptothoracic taxa compared to the Qulqula-Kermanshah radiolarian claystones and radiolarites potentially indicates a preferred erosion of softer units such as the Red Radiolarian Claystone Unit (RRCU) compared to harder radiolarian cherts. The observation of a reworked largely cryptothoracic assemblage might also point to additional sorting effects during fluvial and aeolian transport as well as during redeposition, depending on the morphology and hydrodynamic properties of individual radiolarian taxa. We describe here the Bovidae from the early Middle Miocene site of Maboko, Kenya, known for its rich and highly diverse assemblage of Primates. They are attributed to two taxa of slightly different sizes, Turcocerus africanus n.sp. and Kubanotragus pickfordi. In addition to Kenya, Turcocerus ranges through the Middle Miocene from Turkey to China; it might have originated in Africa but the lack of precise dating weakens any phylogeographic hypothesis. Kubanotragus has similar chronological and geographic ranges. Both Maboko species retain low levels of hypsodonty compared to their northern relatives and may have been less specialised for grazing than Eurasian taxa. The Maboko Bovidae illustrate an early diversification of the family in Africa that appears to pre-date the major diversification of Bovidae and appearance of the diverse clades that are characteristic of modern African pecoran faunas. Zhangpu amber is an important source of Miocene bryophytes in China. Zhangpu amber originates from the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum (MMCO), which is well known for the appearance of Dipterocarpaceae-dominated megathermal forests in East Asia. The humid and warm climate of these forests might have triggered the development of diverse epiphytic bryophytes; however, the Middle Miocene fossils of bryophytes are rare in Asia. Here, we present evidence for Pelekium (Thuidiaceae) in Zhangpu amber. The fossil is characterised by: (i) regularly pinnate ramifications; (ii) deltoid leaves with a single and percurrent Costa; (ⅲ) abundant unbranched and uniseriate paraphyllia covering the stems and branches; (ⅳ) differentiated stem and branch leaves. It represents the first fossil record of Pelekium, showing that the genus already existed in Fujian, South China during the Middle Miocene. Our fossil enriches the Neogene fossil record of bryophytes in East Asia. Extant Pelekium species comprises stenoecious plants that are mainly distributed in tropical areas, often grow on bark in humid forests. The occurrence of fossil Pelekium from Zhangpu amber is in good accordance with the palaeoclimatic reconstruction based on the Climate Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nannoplankton research was conducted in the MH-2 well, Banggai-Sula Basin, Central Sulawesi. Thirty-four ditch-cutting samples were utilized to observe the Minahaki, Kintom, and Biak Formations. Age determination was carried out using biostratigraphy method and standard procedure for first and last occurrence of nannoplankton biodatum and had an absolute age, widely known as a zone indicator. This study aims to determine the age and nannoplankton biozonation of each geological formation in Banggai-Sula Basin. Based on the biostratigraphic analysis, 39 species from 14 genera with abundance frequencies ranging from rare to abundant were found in the MH-2 well. In this study, new results of the age of Banggai-Sula Basin areMiddle Miocene - Early Middle Pliocene (13,706 - 3,727 Ma), and can identify into six calcareous nannoplankton zones that are more detailed than previous researchers, Discoaster signus zone (NN5), Discoaster exilis zone (NN6-NN7), Discoaster berggrenii zone (NN11), Ceratolithus acustus zone (NN12), Helicosphaera sellii zone (NN13-NN15), and the Discoaster tamalis zone (NN16). Biostratigraphic data also shows new information for the first time, the absence of three zones from zone NN8 to zone NN10. In recent years, new findings and new methods (stable isotopes of oxygen, zinc, and nitrogen; 2D and 3D modeling; and geometric morphometric analyses of the teeth) have enhanced our knowledge of the Neogene shark fauna and its paleobiology. Several papers deal with the large Otodus (Megaselachus) species, including the construction of a 3D model, as well as insights into its lifestyle and diet. In addition, the skeletal remains of Carcharias gustrowensis, Carcharodon hastalis, and Keasius parvus and a natural tooth set of Carcharodon hubbelli have been described in the last 13 years, and the dentition of the Neogene species Carcharoides catticus, Megachasma applegatei, and Parotodus benedenii has been reconstructed. Stable isotope analyses of the teeth from the Neogene species of Araloselachus, Carcharias, Carcharodon, Galeocerdo, Hemipristris, and Mitsukurina have given insights into the trophic positions of these genera during the Neogene, and shark teeth preserved near the skeletal remains of prey animals (mammals) and shark bite traces on these remains provide direct evidence of trophic interactions. The tooth shape, fossil locality, and paleoenvironment have been used to better understand the taxa Carcharhinus dicelmai, Megalolamna paradoxodon, Pachyscyllium dachiardii, and P. distans. Among extant species, Galeorhinus galeus can be traced back to the Eocene. Alopias superciliosus, Rhincodon typus, and possibly A. vulpinus can be traced back to the Oligocene. Species present by the Miocene include Alopias vulpinus, Carcharhinus amblyrhynchoides, C. amblyrhynchos, C. albimarginatus, C. amboinensis, C. brachyurus, C. brevipinna, C. falciformis, C. glaucus, C. leucas, C. limbatus, C. longimanus, C. macloti, C. obscurus, C. perezi, C. sealei, Centrophorus granulosus, Cetorhinus maximus, Dalatias licha, Deania calcea, Galeocerdo cuvier, Glyphis glyphis, Heptranchias perlo, Isurus paucus, Lamna nasus, Negaprion brevirostris, Odontaspis ferox, Pseudocarcharias kamoharai, Sphyrna media, S. mokarran, and possibly Carcharodon carcharias. First appearing in the Pliocene are Scymnodon ringens, Somniosus rostratus, and Zameus squamulosus. For some extant species (Carcharias taurus, Hexanchus griseus, Isurus oxyrinchus, Notorynchus cepedianus, and Sphyrna zygaena), it is not clear whether the assigned Neogene teeth represent the same species. The application of new methods to more fossil shark taxa, a detailed search for shark fossils, and better knowledge of the dentition of extant species (especially those with minute-sized teeth) will further enhance our knowledge of the evolution and paleobiology of sharks. Ichnofossils have been defined for the first time from the rocks exposed along the Katilu Khad section, Dunera, Punjab (India) of Miocene succession. Eight ichnotaxa with 12 ichnospecies have been recorded, including Arenicolites isp., Beaconites coronus, Helminthopsis tenuis, Lockeia siliquaria, Palaeophycus tubularis, Palaeophycus isp., Planolites annularis, P. beverleyensis, Skolithos linearis, Taenidium barretti, T. cameronensis, and T. serpentinum. The present ichnofossil assemblages are recognised by two ichnofacies – Scoyenia and Mermia. Scoyenia ichnofacies is typified by less diversity but a high abundance of meniscate burrow (Taenidium and Beaconites), whereas Mermia ichnofacies shows high diversity grazing and feeding traces with low abundance.
