Lunar swirls are albedo features associated with magnetic anomalies, and their formation mechanism has long been debated. Because spectral properties of lunar swirls provide information on space weathering environments and surface compositions, differences in the spectra between swirls and background regions can give a clue to their formation. We analyze space weathering for swirls in the lunar highlands and maria using the VIS-NIR spectral slope, 1550 nm reflectance, and 950 nm band depth. We find that highland swirls show lower reddening-to-darkening ratios than off-swirl regions, implying more decreases of nanophase iron relative to microphase iron on swirls. We also use magnetic field data to investigate the influence of the crustal magnetic field on the space weathering of a few selected swirls. The Reiner Gamma swirl becomes more immature as the magnetic field strength increases, although the entire swirl has a high albedo. Especially, the Reiner Gamma tail shows that the stronger magnetic field makes the surface undergo less spectral reddening. Our results support the solar wind stand-off hypothesis, which is that the solar wind deflected by the crustal field determines the optical property of the surface.

We quantify the performance of aerosol and ocean remote sensing products from the PolCube instrument using a previously developed polarimeter retrieval algorithm based on optimal estimation. PolCube is a modified version of the PolCam lunar instrument on the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter that has been optimized for Earth-Science observations of aerosol, ocean, and thin cloud optical properties. The objective of the PolCube instrument is to retrieve detailed fine-mode (pollution and smoke) and coarse-mode (sea-salt and dust) aerosol properties over the ocean for a range of light to heavy aerosol loadings using its polarimetric-imaging capability at multiple angles and wavelengths from 410−865 nm. An additional objective is to discriminate aerosols from thin clouds. PolCube’s retrieval performance of aerosol optical and microphysical properties and ocean products is quantitatively assessed. We estimate that PolCube can retrieve total aerosol optical depth at 555 nm (AOD555) within ±0.068, fine-mode AOD555 within ±0.078, and fine-mode single-scattering albedo within ±0.036, where all uncertainties are expressed as one standard deviation (1σ). PolCube’s accurate and high-resolution aerosol-retrieval products will provide unique spatial and temporal coverage of the Earth that can be used synergistically with other instruments, such as the Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer to improve air-quality forecasting.

We have developed the PolCube payload, a polarimeter camera for 12U CubeSat mission, in order to demonstrate the performance feasibility technically since 2019. Main objectives of the PolCube camera are the dust detection around Korean peninsula and monitoring super-thin clouds distribution on global oceans. KASI and Korean consortium members maintain a good collaboration with NASA LaRC team in this project. PolCube is a compact payload under 5kg in mass and under 15W in power consumption. This payload has two optical heads, two detectors with 1280 x 1024 CMOS array format, and two filter sets with 4 wavelengths and 0, 60, 90, 120 polarization angles. Each optical head has a field of view of 10 degrees (Swath width ~ 98km) at the altitude of 567km Sun-synchronous orbit. 12U CubeSat spacecraft will be made by a CubeSat company managed by Busan city & KIOST in Korea. In this paper, we will describe the current design of the PolCube payload development.

Our previous study shows that the angle of linear polarization (AOLP) of solar radiation that is scattered from clouds at near-backscatter angles can be used to detect super-thin cirrus clouds over oceans. Such clouds are too thin to be sensed using any current passive satellite instruments that only measure light's total intensity, because of the uncertainty in surface reflection. In this report, we show that with a method similar to the super-thin clouds detection algorithm, dust aerosols may also be detected and differentiated from clouds. We also show that the degree of polarization of reflected light can be used for retrieving the optical depth of dust aerosols in the neighborhood of the backscatter angle, regardless of the reflecting surface conditions. This is a simple and robust algorithm, which could be used to survey dust aerosols over midlatitude and tropical oceans.

We have conducted multi-band (U, B, V, R, and I) polarimetric observations of the whole near-side of the Moon for phase angles between 22° and 121° with a spatial resolution of 1.1 km. A median grain size () map of the near-side regolith of the Moon has been constructed using our polarimetry. We find that is a monotonically increasing function of selenographic latitude β; at is estimated to be up to 40% larger than that at the equator. At the same latitude, is larger in the maria than in the highlands, confirming the initial findings of Shkuratov et al. The former is thought to be a result of reduced space weathering effects at high latitudes, where the flux of weathering agents such as micrometeoroids and solar wind particles is smaller. The latter probably indicates that the regolith material in the maria is more resistant to comminution by space weathering than is the material in the highlands. We also find that three photometric or polarimetric maturity indices—optical maturity, and the color ratio of parallel-component polarization ()—have different sensitivities on young small craters and rays of large craters. We present possible causes of these different sensitivities.
