Process parameters, i.e., laser power and scanning speed, play a key role in the fabrication of high-quality parts fabricated by selective laser melting. In this work, the microstructure, microhardness and porosity of selective laser-melted additive manufactured parts are studied. The porosity of the finished product depends largely on the energy density used, much more strongly on the scanning speed and less so on the applied laser power. The microstructure shows features attributable to a difference in cooling rates close to and farther away from the melting zone of the laser.
