CdTe/[n.sup.+]-Si heterojunction diodes were fabricated and characterized for the development of gamma ray detectors. With the careful control of the growth parameters thick single crystal CdTe epilayers of high-crystalline quality were grown directly on the (211) Si substrates in a metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The heterojunction diode was fabricated by growing a 5 [micro]m thick n-type CdTe buffer layer on the [n.sup.+]-Si substrate, followed by the growth of 100 [micro]m thick undoped p-CdTe layer. The diode fabricated showed very good rectification property with a low value of the reverse bias leakage current, typically 1.26 x [10.sup.-7] A/[cm.sup.2] for an applied reverse bias of 60 V. The diode clearly demonstrated the gamma radiation detection capability by resolving energy peaks from the [sup.241]Am radioisotope during the radiation detection test performed at room temperature. Room temperature nuclear radiation detectors with energy discrimination capability developed by growing thick cadmium telluride (CdTe) epitaxial layers directly on n+-Si substrates in a metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy system is reported for the first time. The CdTe/n+ -Si heterojunction diode detector exhibited good rectification and charge collection ,properties. The reverse leakage currents were typically 1 × 10-7 to 5 × 10-7 A/cm² at 50-V bias. Aim: We performed a birth cohort study involving 124 mother-infant pairs to investigate whether placental DNA methylation is associated with maternal choline status and fetal development., Methods: Plasma choline concentration was assayed longitudinally in the 1st and 3rd trimesters and at term-pregnancy in mothers and cord blood. Placental DNA methylation was measured for 12 target candidate genes that are related to fetal growth, adipogenesis, lipid and energy metabolism, or long interspersed nuclear elements., Results: Higher maternal plasma and cord blood choline levels at term tended to associate with lower birthweight (r = -0.246, P < 0.013; r = -0.290, P < 0.002) and body mass index (BMI) at birth (r = 0.344, P < 1E-3; r = -0.360, P < 1E-3). The correlation between maternal plasma choline level and cord blood choline level was relatively modest (r = 0.049, P = 0.639). There was an inverse correlation between placental DNA methylation at the retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRA) gene and maternal plasma choline level (r = -0.188 to r = -0.452, P = 0.043 to P < 1E-3 at three points). RXRA methylation level was positively associated with birthweight and BMI at birth (r = 0.306, P = 0.001; r = 0.390, P < 1E-3). Further, RXRA methylation was inversely correlated with RXRA gene expression level (r = 0.333, P < 1E-3)., Conclusion: Our results suggest that the association between maternal choline status and placental RXRA methylation represents a potential fetal programing mechanism contributing to fetal growth., (© 2020 Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.)

Aim: To examine the relationship between preterm birth and socioeconomic factors, past history, cervical length, cervical interleukin-8, bacterial vaginosis, underlying diseases, use of medication, employment status, sex of the fetus and multiple pregnancy., Methods: In a multicenter, prospective, observational study, 1810 Japanese women registering their future delivery were enrolled at 8⁺⁰ to 12⁺⁶ weeks of gestation. Data on cervical length and delivery were obtained from 1365 pregnant women. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed., Results: Short cervical length, steroid use, multiple pregnancy and male fetus were risk factors for preterm birth before 34 weeks of gestation. Multiple pregnancy, low educational level, short cervical length and part-timer were risk factors for preterm birth before 37 weeks of gestation., Conclusion: Multiple pregnancy and cervical shortening at 20-24 weeks of gestation was a stronger risk factor for preterm birth. Any pregnant woman being part-time employee or low educational level, having a male fetus and requiring steroid treatment should be watched for the development of preterm birth., (© 2013 The Authors. Vaginal evisceration after a pelvic operation is a rare gynecological emergency. When intercourse is the cause, most cases occur within 1 year of surgery. A 53-year-old woman presented to the emergency room for vaginal evisceration half a day after the first postoperative occurrence of intercourse 3 years after an abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. In an emergency laparotomy, the protruding small bowel was replaced within the abdominal cavity. The avulsed vaginal cuff, which measured 6 cm in length and had atrophic but non-necrotic margins, was sutured. Women who go for long periods without intercourse after a hysterectomy, especially post-menopausal women, should be made aware of unrecognized vaginal atrophy that could, in some cases, lead to rupture and evisceration during the next occurrence of intercourse., (© 2012 The Authors. Context: Somatostatin-producing tumors are a rare type of neuroendocrine tumor. Their effects on blood glucose levels have been variously reported, and detailed reports have been scarce., Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the reasons for the extraordinary blood glucose fluctuations in a case with no previous history of diabetes., Patients and Methods: A 68-yr-old nondiabetic woman with an ovarian tumor was suffering from hyper- and hypoglycemia. Based on the results of an oral glucose tolerance test and continuous glucose monitoring, we speculated that the fluctuating blood glucose level was accompanied not only by a low insulin level but also by low counter-regulatory hormones levels, and that those broad hormonal suppressions were caused by a high somatostatin level produced in the ovarian tumor. We performed an oophorectomy and assessed the pathology of the tumor and changes in the blood glucose profile as well as hormonal levels postoperatively., Results: The blood glucose level was completely normalized after the oophorectomy. Insulin secretion was also normalized. Histological examination showed that the tumor comprised a mature cystic teratoma and a stromal carcinoid. Immunohistochemically, the stromal carcinoid component was positive for somatostatin. The somatostatin level was 8505 pmol/liter preoperatively, which dropped down to 71.5 pmol/liter postoperatively. We found two previous reports of somatostatin-producing ovarian neuroendocrine tumors. Somatostatin levels among cases of ovarian origin were much higher than those among cases of gastrointestinal origins, and cases of ovarian origin all experienced blood glucose fluctuations., Conclusion: Extremely high somatostatin levels and blood glucose fluctuations may be characteristics of somatostatin-producing ovarian neuroendocrine tumors.

Purpose: Moyamoya (meaning a "hazy puff of smoke" in Japanese) disease is a rare cerebrovascular occlusive disease. Moyamoya disease may become symptomatic for the first time during pregnancy. We report a case of antepartum intracranial hemorrhage due to unrecognized unilateral moyamoya disease, which was subsequently diagnosed as HELLP syndrome during the postpartum period., Study Design: A case report of a 29-year-old Japanese primigravida who was transported to our hospital at 39 weeks of gestation because of sudden loss of consciousness and left hemiplegia. On arrival, her blood pressure was 143/94 mmHg with 1+ proteinuria by dipstick. Brain computed tomography revealed a right putaminal hemorrhage with intraventricular hemorrhage. The patient delivered a neonate by emergency cesarean section, and an intracranial hematoma was subsequently evacuated. Approximately 3 h postoperatively, she was diagnosed with HELLP syndrome and the following were initiated: IV magnesium sulfate, antihypertensive agents, and transfusion of 10 units of platelets. Angiographic findings were consistent with unilateral moyamoya disease., Conclusions: Moyamoya disease is a rare entity that must be considered in the differential diagnosis of hemorrhagic stroke during pregnancy. It is important to perform careful monitoring and adequate management with cooperation between obstetricians and other specialists when serious complications arise.

Background. To investigate the effect of social service prenatal care (PNC) utilization on perinatal outcomes among women with socioeconomic problems in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Methods. Retrospective study. The study enrolled all women at our hospital who either attended PNC utilizing social services (attenders) or who did not attend PNC (nonattenders) between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2010. We compared the maternal characteristics and perinatal outcome of attenders with those of nonattenders. Results. A total of 83 attenders and 45 nonattenders were enrolled. The mean gestational age at the first PNC visit was 31.1 weeks in the attenders. Attenders were found to have a lower incidence of preterm delivery, pregnancy-induced hypertension, emergency cesarean section, low birth weight, and the NICU admission than nonattenders (P < 0.05). Conclusions. The utilization of social service PNC greatly improved perinatal outcomes among women with socioeconomic problems problems in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Bacterial meningitis is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Few cases of pneumococcal meningitis during pregnancy and the postpartum period have been reported. We describe a case of postpartum pneumococcal meningitis complicated by endocarditis. A 26-year-old para-2 woman who had had a normal vaginal delivery at 38 weeks at a maternity home was transported to our hospital with a 39.5°C fever 11 days postpartum. Eight hours after her arrival, her state of consciousness deteriorated rapidly. Lumbar puncture revealed Gram-positive cocci consistent with Streptococcus pneumoniae. She was immediately treated with antibiotics and subsequently diagnosed with endocarditis. Final culture results from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid confirmed the presence of S. pneumoniae. She recovered completely with no evidence of neurological damage. Maintaining a high clinical suspicion and initiating appropriate diagnostic testing and therapeutic interventions promptly are essential to reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with bacterial meningitis., (© 2010 The Authors Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica© 2010 Nordic Federation of Societies of Obstetrics and Gynecology.)

Aim: Warm-water cleaning toilets, or ‘bidet toilets’, are one of the most popular household goods in Japan. However, a recent large-scale survey raised questions about the relationship between bidet toilet use and bacterial vaginitis as reflecting bacterial vaginosis with inflammation. Recently, gynecologists have expressed concerns about the increase in aggravated vaginal microflora in habitual bidet users. Therefore, the present study was designed to clarify the possible relevancy of bidet usage to changes in vaginal microflora., Methods: Two hundred and sixty-eight non-pregnant women of reproductive age, with an increase in vaginal discharge, consented to enter the study. On outpatient visit, an aliquot of cervicovaginal secretion was obtained by a sterilized cotton swab and cultured using standard culture systems., Results: Normal microflora (Lactobacillus species) was not present in 42.86% of bidet toilet users, compared to 8.77% of non-users. Fecal bacteria were detected in 50 of the 268 cases (18.66%), 46 cases in users (92%) and only 4 cases in non-users (8%). Contamination by other pathogens was 4 to 6 times higher in users than in non-users., Conclusion: Habitual use of bidet toilets aggravates vaginal microflora, either by depriving normal microflora or facilitating opportunistic infection of fecal bacteria and other microorganisms.

We evaluated the clinical usefulness of near-infrared spectroscopic quantitative measurement of placental oxygenation for the noninvasive estimation of uteroplacental function in pregnant women. We performed a prospective, observational clinical study. Women without complications (N = 15), women with threatened preterm delivery (TPD; N = 6), and women with intrauterine fetal growth restriction (IUGR; N = 6) were enrolled. Measurements of placental tissue oxygenation index (TOI) using the NIRO-300 (Hamamatsu Photonics, Hamamatsu City, Japan) were recorded. Mean TOI was 72.3 +/- 5.3% in women without complications, 72.9 +/- 5.6% in pregnant women with TPD, and 78.7 +/- 3.0% in pregnant women with IUGR. Mean TOI in pregnant women with IUGR was significantly higher than that of the other two groups (P < 0.05). In the IUGR group, although gestational age at measurement on admission was less than that made during hospitalization (P < 0.05), there were no differences in the TOI in relation to gestational age at measurement. Higher TOIs in pregnant women suggest decreased placental function. Monitoring the TOI by near-infrared spectroscopic quantitative measurement may have a high potential for clinical application, particularly in prenatal management., (Thieme Medical Publishers.)

We evaluated the clinical usefulness of near-infrared spectroscopic quantitative measurement of placental tissue oxygenation for noninvasive estimation of uteroplacental function in pregnant women. We performed a prospective observational clinical study. Women without complications (N = 15) and women with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH; N = 6) were enrolled. Measurements of placental tissue oxygenation index (TOI) using NIRO-300 (Hamamatsu Photonics, Hamamatsu City, Japan) were recorded. The mean TOI in women without complications was 72.36 +/- 5.36% and 80.28 +/- 2.78% in pregnant women with PIH. The mean TOI in pregnant women with PIH was higher than that of pregnant women without complications. There were no differences in the TOI in relation to gestational age at onset of PIH, forms of PIH, or severity of hypertension. Higher TOIs in pregnant women suggest the reduced ability of the placental function. Monitoring the TOI by near-infrared spectroscopic quantitative measurement may have a high potential for clinical application, particularly in prenatal management., (Thieme Medical Publishers.)

We report the first case of a hyalinizing spindle cell tumor with giant rosettes of the omentum. The mesenchymal tumor arises from a multiplication of fibroblastic cells containing large rosette-like structures composed of a central collagen core surrounded by plump oval to spindle tumor cells. A 38-year-old woman exhibited the symptom of abdominal pain in the right side, with a correlated sensation of a mass in the same area. A tumor consisting of both solid and cystic cytologic features was subsequently diagnosed, on the right side of the uterus. Her serum level of CA-125 was only slightly elevated. Surgical intervention indicated that the tumor originated from lower pole of the omentum and the histological diagnosis was hyalinizing spindle cell tumor with giant rosettes. The metastatic potential of this type of tumor is considered similar to that of the metastatic low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma, which indicated the need for careful clinical follow up of this case.

We reported 22 cases with tuberculosis in pregnancy and puerperium, who were treated in our hospital from 1993 to 2001. Nine out of 22 cases were foreign women and the onset of tuberculosis was not clear and the diagnosis tended to be delayed in most cases. In the reports from industrial countries, most of those patients are foreign bone and the delay in diagnosis is common because symptoms are apt to be mixed up those for pregnancy and puerperium. In 10 of 22 cases, extrapulmonary lesions were noted. Most of our cases were treated with INH, RFP and EB, and in some severer cases PZA was added. WHO and BTS recommend standard therapy with PZA but ATS recommends INH, RFP and EB without PZA. Generally SM is contraindicated because of adverse effect of hearing loss for all pregnant periods, and the data for PZA and other second line drugs are insufficient. Our cases and their neonates showed normal course and no malformation nor congenital tuberculosis. 2 cases could not keep adherence for drugs and 2 babies got active tuberculosis. Precaution for infection is one of most important problem to deal with cases with tuberculosis during pregnancy and postpartum in the hospital. If she is still infectious on delivery, we should consider prevention for transmission and manage her in isolated manner. CDC recommends not to treat for latent tuberculosis during pregnancy because of high frequency of hepatic damage due to INH. It is the best way to check and treat latent tuberculosis before gestation if she is at high risk with tuberculosis.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy, informative rate, detection rate, and clinical utility of prenatal interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of amniotic fluid samples from Japanese women., Methods: Amniotic fluid specimens from 2,639 Japanese women were received for prenatal interphase FISH and chromosome analysis. A questionnaire was designed to evaluate FISH clinical utility by collaboration sites., Results: Based on 2,319 tested samples, the accuracy (100%), informative (94%), and detection (87.6%) rates were all high. The accuracy (100%), informative (90.2%), and detection (90.0%) rates were also remarkable in third-trimester pregnancies. We perceive significant advantages from this test regarding medical management and patient satisfaction., Conclusions: This novel report shows that in Japan prenatal interphase FISH testing is highly informative and accurate, not only in second-trimester pregnancies but also in third-trimester pregnancies. This test provides advantages to both physicians and patients, provided that its capabilities and limitations are understood.

A primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma is extremely rare. Moreover, there is no established treatment modality other than surgery, and the prognosis is extremely poor. We report a case of a primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma. The patient was a gravida 4, para 2, 73-year-old female. She first presented with chief complaints of constipation and a pelvic mass. A physical examination revealed a solid tumor in the pelvic cavity. Which was about the size of an infant's head and had an irregular shape. The patient was suspected of having a subserosal myoma of the uterus or an ovarian tumor, and she was subjected to a laparotomy. A solid tumor about the size of an infant's head was found in the left uterine adnexa, and an intraoperative rapid pathological diagnosis of an ovarian leiomyosarcoma was made. A total abdominal hysterectomy, a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, a pelvic lymphadenectomy, and an omentectomy were then performed. The final pathological diagnosis confirmed a left primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma. After a series of discussions with the patient's family about her therapeutic plan, we decided to let the patient be followed-up without adjuvant therapy. Forty-two months after the surgery, the patient accumulated massive amounts of pleural effusion and ascites, with extensive organ metastasis. She received terminal care and soon died.

Background: To investigate failure pattern and to evaluate the prognostic impact of lymph node metastasis in patients with cervical cancer treated with postoperative adjuvant pelvic irradiation., Materials and Methods: Ninety-eight patients with FIGO IB to IIB cervical cancer were treated with radical hysterectomy, bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy and postoperative radiation therapy. All the patients had at least one of the following pathologic risk factors for pelvic recurrence; 1) positive margins, 2) positive pelvic lymph nodes other than common iliac node, 3) deep stromal invasion more than 50% or parametrial invasion., Results: The 5-year overall survival (OAS) rate for the entire patient group was 82%. Causes of the first failure were pelvic recurrence in 5 cases and distant metastasis in 15 cases. Fifteen of the 47 patients with positive pelvic lymph nodes developed distant metastasis, whereas distant metastasis was noted in only 1 of 51 patients without lymph node metastasis. The 5-year OAS rates for patients with and without pelvic lymph node metastasis were 76% and 89%, respectively (p = 0.018)., Conclusion: Despite receiving postoperative pelvic irradiation, apparently lower survival was observed for node positive patients.

Primary non-specific sarcoma of the ovary is extremely rare, and only 22 reported cases of pure leiomyosarcoma (LMS) are known to the authors. We present an autopsy case of a primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma in a 73-year-old woman. She had noticed an abdominal mass after difficulty in defecating for several months. The excision of tumor with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and hysterectomy was carried out. A diagnosis of pure leiomyosarcoma of the left ovary was made on pathological examination with immunohistochemistry. Adjuvant radio-chemotherapy was not given. At 18 months' follow up, abdomino-pelvic sonography revealed an abdominal tumor and hepatic metastasis. The patient died 3.5 years after the initial surgery. The post-mortem examination revealed a peritoneal recurrent tumor and extensive distant metastases of the liver, lungs, pancreas, gastric mucosa, muscle and skin. The prognosis of the ovarian LMS is poor from the pertinent literature. Several prognostic indicators on histology including mitotic activity, proliferative activity and p53 status of the tumor are discussed.

The hypotensive effect, kinetics, and concentration-response relationship of labetalol, alpha beta- and alpha 1-adrenoceptor blocking drug, were studied in seven women with a moderate-to-severe hypertension (averaged diastolic blood pressure [DBP] of 100 to 120 mm Hg measured during a 1- to 2-day hospitalization period) during the third trimester of pregnancy who received the oral twice-daily doses of 150 to 450 mg. These dosages were individually selected by attaining a therapeutic goal of DBP < or = 100 mm Hg or systolic blood pressure (SBP)/DBP reduction of > 30/15 mm Hg, as compared with the pretreatment value, at any time during the 12-hour dosing interval for a 3- to 5-day dosage escalation period. Labetalol concentrations in plasma were measured by a high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection, and the plasma drug concentration-response relationship was analyzed by a sigmoidal Emax model. Labetalol decreased significantly (P < 0.05 to 0.01) the pretreatment SBP/DBP (166.3 +/- 5.2/110.3 +/- 3.0 mm Hg, mean +/- SEM) without any recognizable side-effects during the twice-daily dosing period in the mothers. Peaked concentrations occurred at 1 hour postdose in all patients. The elimination half-lives ranged from 4.3 to 6.9 hours, and the apparent oral clearance from 31.9 to 73.3 mL/min/kg. The pharmacodynamic parameters (Emax and EC50) analyzed by the Emax model revealed a 3- to 5-fold interindividual variability. The gestational ages at delivery ranged from 34 to 37 weeks, and the birth weights were < 2000 g in 6 of the 7 neonates. Four neonates developed respiratory distress syndrome after delivery, and one infant died of pulmonary hypoplasia 3 months later. The results indicate that 1) labetalol orally administered in a twice-daily regimen as done in this study is an effective antihypertensive drug in women with hypertension during late pregnancy, and 2) interindividual variability in the kinetic factor (e.g., oral clearance) as well as that in the pharmacodynamic factor (e.g., EC50) appear to be related to the overall variability in the hypotensive responsiveness to the drug. However, whether labetalol and/or hypertension per se would have been related to the fetal outcome remains unanswered from the present study.

Estradiol was administered to 3 steers (0.12 mg/kg of body weight/d for 14 consecutive days), followed by 2 days of nonfeeding (starvation). During estradiol administration, liver nuclear estrogen receptor and serum apolipoprotein B-100 (apoB-100), as well as serum triglycerides concentrations were increased, compared with values before administration. Starvation, together with interruption of estradiol administration, resulted in rapid decreases of the receptor, serum apoB-100, and serum triglycerides concentrations, and increase of nonesterified fatty acids concentration. Of the 3 steers, 2 had higher liver triglyceride content, compared with values before treatment. In the control group (3 steers that received vehicle alone, then starved similarly), these concentrations, except for serum nonesterified fatty acids and triglycerides concentrations after starvation, were not changed. In another experiment, serum apoB-100 concentration in dairy cows was significantly (P < 0.05) lower at parturition than values before and after parturition. These results indicate that estradiol may be involved in development of fatty liver in cattle.

An autopsy case of high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is reported. Immunohistochemical study of the ESS was done in comparison with carcinosarcoma (CS), leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and normal endometrium in the uterus in order to trace the origin of ESS, which is a point of some controversy. Co-expression of keratin and vimentin and/or desmin positivity in several elements of CS and LMS, and glandular or stromal tissues in normal endometrium made it difficult immunohistochemically to be certain of the origin of ESS.

Two siblings with succinic acidemia, a hitherto unreported organic acidemia, were investigated. Succinic acidemia, lactic acidosis and respiratory distress were observed in one of the siblings, who died 37 days after birth, and succinic acidemia was also detected in the next sibling at the fetal stage. NADH-cytochrome c reductase activity was significantly low in both cases and NADH-ferricyanide reductase activity was also low in the fetal case, suggesting a complex I deficiency of the electron transport system in the mitochondrial membrane.

This study characterizes the maturational change of cardiac function in unanaesthetized lambs from 1 day to 6 months of age. The cardiac function curve, the relationship between left ventricular output (Qco) and left ventricular end diastolic pressure, was studied in lambs of ages 1 day, 2-3 days, 7-8 days, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. Cardiac output was measured by thermodilution while left ventricular end diastolic pressure was either raised by infusion of 5% glucose, or lowered by haemorrhage. At elevated left ventricular end diastolic pressure, cardiac output tended to reach a plateau of approximately 300 ml/min per kg in lambs less than 1 week of age and 200 ml/min per kg in lambs older than 1 month. Cardiac function was depressed by total ganglionic block in 1-3 days-old lambs, but not in lambs older than 1 week. Heart rate decreased in response to ganglionic block in lambs up to 1 week of age, but it increased in lambs 3-6 months old. Increases in afterload with methoxamine infusion during ganglionic block further depressed cardiac function in all age groups of lambs. The stroke work curve was shifted downward by hexamethonium and returned back to control level by methoxamine. We conclude that newborn cardiac output is near maximum even at 1 month of age. Sympathetic activity and circulating catecholamines help maintain cardiac function in 1-3 days-old lambs. Cardiac function is sensitive to afterload in lambs of all ages studied.

Comparative effects of hexavalent (K2Cr2O7:Cr(VI)) and trivalent chromium (Cr(NO3)3:Cr(III)) on the development of lipid peroxidation, and the relationship between the lipid peroxidation and damage to tissues were studied using male ddY strain mice. The animals were administered with either of two chemicals at a dose of 20 mg Cr/kg by a single intraperitoneal injection. The results obtained were as follows: (1) Lipid peroxidation in the liver, as measured by the synthesis of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), showed a significant increase at 24 and 48 hr after Cr(VI) injection, while in the kidney it was observed only at 48 hr. In the mice administered with Cr(III), TBARS formation in the liver went down below the control levels, while no change was observed in the kidney. (2) Chromium contents in the liver and kidney showed a maximum level at 6 hr after injection of Cr(VI) and then those declined to the half of the maximum level at 48 hr, respectively. Chromium contents in the liver and kidney of the mice injected with Cr(III) were lower than those injected with Cr(VI) during the experimental period. (3) Increases of TBARS formation in the liver, chromium content in the liver and kidney, and ornithine carbamyl transferase (OCT) activity indicative of the liver cell damage, and urea nitrogen content in the serum, indicative of the kidney damage, observed at 24 hr after injection of Cr(VI) were inhibited by simultaneous injection of 100 mg/kg of L-ascorbic acid, as antichrome agent, respectively. These observations might suggest a possible causative role of lipid peroxidation in Cr(VI) toxicity.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The anterior and the posterior longitudinal ligaments (ALL and PLL) of the cervical spine were examined. The ALL and the deep layer of the PLL are continuous, and surround the vertebral body. The superficisl layer of the PLL surrounds the dura mater, nerve roots and the vertebral artery, suggesting that this membrane may serve as a protective membrane for the soft tissues inside the vertebral canal rather than as a conventional ligament.
