A bifunctional tethered iridium catalyst containing a 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine framework was synthesised for the first time. The ethereal tether chain was easily constructed via the intramolecular oxydefluorination of a perfluorophenylsulfonyl substituent by using a modified 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand with a hydroxyalkyl chain. The conformationally constrained structure could hamper deactivation pathways in the catalytic hydrogen generation from formic acid, leading to advanced durability and complete conversion.

It is difficult to buy a pair of shoes that fit your feet because you can't try them on at the online shopping site. In this study, we proposed a system that uses augmented reality to measure the size of a foot and introduce a shoe that fits the user's foot. This system makes it possible to confirm the comfort of the shoes by visualizing the pressure points on the feet when trying them on.

A concise synthesis of new oxy-tethered ruthenium complexes effective for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of aromatic ketones is described. The oxy-tether was constructed via a defluorinative etherification arising from an intramolecular nucleophilic substitution of a perfluorinated phenylsulfonyl substituent. The obtained tethered complexes exhibited desirable catalytic activity and selectivity, especially in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of functionalized aromatic ketones. The robustness and rigidity of the tether contribute to their superior catalytic performance relative to the nontethered prototype complex.

Neurilemoma is an uncommon benign tumor of the oral and maxillofacial region. We report a hugeneurilemoma, measuring 40×35mm, in the palate of a 22-year-old man. The lesion was surgically excised withthe patient under general anesthesia. The tumor was confirmed to communicate with the greater palatine nerve atsurgery. Histopathologically, it was diagnosed as a neurilemoma, Antoni A and B type. There has been no recurrenceduring postoperative follow-up of 36 months.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is an uncommon entity of odontogenic origin, characterized by the formation of duct-like structures in the tumor. Although its histogenesis is still uncertain, it is also considered to be a rather hamartoma-like lesion. Here we report a case of AOT in a 22-year-old Japanese woman, the first documented case to have been analyzed for the presence of hard α-keratin (human hair protein). A positive reaction for human hair proteins was noted in the marginal area of calcified material, or at the interface or between areas of dystrophic calcification and columnar epithelial cells. Furthermore, melanin pigment was demonstrated histologically in this case, similar to several previously reported cases of AOT with melanin. This is the first reported case of AOT with hard α-keratin. These findings suggest that AOT may have the potential to differentiate into hair components. We present the case of a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in the mandibular premolar region. The patient underwent excision of the tumour under general anaesthesia. On histopathological study, the tumour was found to be comprised of odontogenic epithelium, mesenchymal tissue, dentin, adamantine and dental cementum, surrounded by ameloblastic fibroma. Interestingly, most of the tumour was comprised of hard tissues, including adamantine, dentin and dental cementum, unlike most ameloblastic fibro-odontomas in which soft tissues dominate.

An unusual case of pigmented ameloblastic fibro-odontoma with prominent odontoma components in a 7-year-old Japanese boy is reported. In addition to the characteristic histopathologic features of ameloblastic fibro-odontoma, deposition of melanin pigments was found in the ameloblastic cells, mesenchymal cells resembling the dental papilla and calcified tissue including mature dentin. The pigments were stained positively with Fontana-Masson, and the pigment-laden cells in mature dentin were positive for HMB-45 by immunohistochemical staining. Such findings have not been described so far in any previously reported cases.

An epidemic of Lyme borreliosis on Hokkaido island, Japan, was surveyed by questionnaire in 587 hunters. The 308 returns (52.4%) revealed episodes of tick bite (usually 2 or more) in 210 cases. Skin rashes appeared in 164 cases. Associated itching, pain, etc., but not skin rash, were more frequent after 2 or more tick bite. Previous determinations of anti-Borrelia burgdorferi antibody titers in these subjects and in controls suggested an association with outdoor activities other than hunting, and among 33 cases of dermatological symptoms and 23 of articular symptoms, 4 and 2, respectively, were antibody-positive. Most of these antibody-positive subjects had suffered tick bite at least twice, but had had no antibiotic treatment. Three subjects with joint disorders were antibody-positive. These findings suggested that the many hunters exposed to Borrelia burgdorferi frequently carried latent infections, and that some had latent form of arthritis, dermatitis and other disorders.

The serological survey, analyzing sera which were obtained from Lyme disease suspected subjects was performed using immunoperoxidase (IP) test between July, 1987 and February, 1989. Fifteen seropositive subjects to Borrelia burgdorferi have been found in this survey, and these cases were considered to be true Lyme disease or highly suspected for this illness. Most of these seropositive cases geographically occurred in northern part of Japan, and both sexes and all age subjects were affected. In clinical manifestations, 5 cases developed a typical skin lesion of erythema chronicum migrans (ECM) followed by tick-bite. Neurologic manifestations were found in 6 cases, including one patient who also had ECM after a known tick bite. Of these neurologic manifestations, 4 cases had lymphocytic meningitis, 3 unilateral or bilateral facial palsy, and one encephalomyelitis. When 8 of these 15 sera were analyzed for antibodies to Lyme disease with ELISA, a poor agreement of serodiagnosis between IP test and ELISA has been found in the course of this study.
