Context. Observational evidence has accumulated in the past years, showing that the Galactic bulge includes two populations, a metal poor and a metal rich one that, in addition to a different metallicity, show different alpha over iron abundances, spatial distribution, and kinematics. While the metal rich, barred component has been fairly well characterized, the metal poor, spheroidal component has been more elusive and harder to describe. RR Lyrae variables are clean tracers of the old bulge component, and they are, on average, more metal poor than red clump stars. Aims. The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) surveyed the inner Galactic bulge and the adjacent southern Galactic disk from $2009-2015$. Upon its conclusion, the complementary VVV eXtended (VVVX) survey has expanded both the temporal as well as spatial coverage of the original VVV area, widening it from $562$ to $1700$ sq. deg., as well as providing additional epochs in $JHK_{\rm s}$ filters from $2016-2023$. With the completion of VVVX observations during the first semester of 2023, we present here the observing strategy, a description of data quality and access, and the legacy of VVVX. VVVX took $\sim 2000$ hours, covering about 4% of the sky in the bulge and southern disk. VVVX covered most of the gaps left between the VVV and the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) areas and extended the VVV time baseline in the obscured regions affected by high extinction and hence hidden from optical observations. VVVX provides a deep $JHK_{\rm s}$ catalogue of $\gtrsim 1.5\times10^9$ point sources, as well as a $K_{\rm s}$ band catalogue of $\sim 10^7$ variable sources. Within the existing VVV area, we produced a $5D$ map of the surveyed region by combining positions, distances, and proper motions of well-understood distance indicators such as red clump stars, RR Lyrae, and Cepheid variables. In March 2023 we successfully finished the VVVX survey observations that started in 2016, an accomplishment for ESO Paranal Observatory upon 4200 hours of observations for VVV+VVVX. The VVV+VVVX catalogues complement those from the Gaia mission at low Galactic latitudes and provide spectroscopic targets for the forthcoming ESO high-multiplex spectrographs MOONS and 4MOST., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures (+ appendix). Diffuse interstellar bands comprise hundreds of absorption features in the ISM. Most DIBs are observed in the optical, but some are in the IR. We observed 76 early-type stars at R=50,000 and S/N ratios of several hundreds using CRIRES. We measure DIBs around 1318, 1527, 1561, 1565, 1567, 1574 and/or 1624 nm. We detect a total of 6 DIB features and 17 likely stellar features assisted by a CMFGEN model. We also measured the DIBs at 1318 and 1527 nm using X-shooter towards ten Ceph. variables with 3.2 < E(B-V) < 6.5 and 4 stars at low values of water vapour. Correlation coeffs. of 0.73-0.96 are found comparing NIRDIB eq. width vs. E(B-V) and with r > 0.8 when comparing the NIR and optical DIBs 5705, 5780, 6203, 6283 and 6269 A. The 5797 A DIB is less well correlated with the NIDIBs. The "C60+" DIB at 9632 A is not well correlated with the 1318 nm DIB. Partial correlation coefficients using E(B-V) as the covariate were also determined. For stars earlier than B2, the 1318 nm DIB is affected by an emission line on its blue wing, likely stellar in nature, although we cannot rule out interstellar/circumstellar origin for example caused by by a DIB in emission. The 1318 nm DIB has a red wing and is reasonably well fitted by two gaussians. Neither the component ratios nor separation are correlated with 5780/5797 or E(B-V). EW(1318 nm) correlates with HI with EW(1318 nm)/E(B-V) decreasing with f(H2). Five pairs of stars within 1 am show similar 1318 nm DIB profiles. Variation in 1318 nm is seen in HD 145501/145502 and HD 168607/168625 pairs. CRIRES data for 17 stars separated by 6-14 months and 2 X-shooter sightlines separated by 9.9 yr were analysed. No time-variability is detected in the 5780, 5797 A, 1318 nm or 1527 nm DIBs. Tentative time variation is observed in the C60+ DIBs at 9577 and 9632 A towards HD 183143 although very close to the noise level with confirmation required., Comment: Accepted for publicaion in the main journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics on 25th November 2022

In an effort to improve our understanding of the spiral arm structure of the Milky Way, we use Classical Cepheids (CCs) to increase the number of young tracers on the far side of the Galactic disk with accurately determined distances. We use a sample of 30 CCs, discovered using near-infrared photometry from the VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea survey (VVV) and classified based on their radial velocities and metallicities. We combine them with another 20 CCs from the literature for which VVV photometry is available. The compiled sample of CCs with homogeneously computed distances based on VVV infrared photometry was employed as a proof of concept to trace the spiral structure in the poorly explored far side of the disk. Although the use of CCs has some caveats, these variables are currently the only available young tracers in the far side disk for which a numerous sample with accurate distances can be obtained. Therefore, a larger sample could allow us to make a significant step forward in our understanding of the Milky Way disk as a whole. We present preliminary evidence that CCs favor: a spiral arm model with two main arms (Perseus and Scutum-Centaurus) branching out into four arms at galactocentric distances, $R_\mathrm {GC}\gtrsim5-6\,\mathrm{kpc}$; the extension of the Scutum-Centaurus arm behind the Galactic center; a possible connection between the Perseus arm and the Norma tangency direction. The current sample of CCs in the far side of the Galaxy are in the mid-plane, arguing against the presence of a severely warped disk at small Galactocentric distances ($R_\mathrm {GC}\lesssim12\,\mathrm{kpc}$) in the studied area. The structure, kinematics, and chemical composition of the far side of the Milky Way disk, beyond the bulge, are still to be revealed. Classical Cepheids (CCs) are young and luminous standard candles. We aim to use a well-characterized sample of these variable stars to study the present time properties of the far side of the Galactic disk. A sample of 45 Cepheid variable star candidates were selected from near infrared time series photometry obtained by the VVV survey. We characterized this sample using high quality near infrared spectra obtained with VLT/X-Shooter, deriving radial velocities and iron abundances for all the sample Cepheids. This allowed us to separate the CCs, which are metal rich and with kinematics consistent with the disk rotation, from type II Cepheids (T2Cs), which are more metal poor and with different kinematics. We estimated individual distances and extinctions using VVV photometry and period-luminosity relations, reporting the characterization of 30 CCs located on the far side of the Galactic disk, plus 8 T2Cs mainly located in the bulge region, of which 10 CCs and 4 T2Cs are new discoveries. This is the first sizeable sample of CCs in this distant region of our Galaxy that has been spectroscopically confirmed. We use their positions, kinematics, and metallicities to confirm that the general properties of the far disk are similar to those of the well-studied disk on the solar side of the Galaxy. In addition, we derive for the first time the radial metallicity gradient on the disk's far side. Considering all the CCs with $R_{\mathrm{GC}} < 17\,\rm{kpc}$, we measure a gradient with a slope of $-0.062 \, \mathrm{dex\, kpc^{-1}}$ and an intercept of $+0.59 \, \rm{dex}$, which is in agreement with previous determinations based on CCs on the near side of the disk., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The Galactic center (GC) is the densest region of the Milky Way. Variability surveys towards the GC potentially provide the largest number of variable stars per square degree within the Galaxy. However, high stellar density is also a drawback due to blending. Moreover, the GC is affected by extreme reddening, therefore near infrared observations are needed. We plan to detect new variable stars towards the GC, focusing on type II Cepheids (T2Cs) which have the advantage of being brighter than RR Lyrae stars. We perform parallel Lomb-Scargle and Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis of the $K_s$-band time series of the VISTA variables in the Via Lactea survey, to detect periodicities. We employ statistical parameters to clean our sample. We take account of periods, light amplitudes, distances, and proper motions to provide a classification of the candidate variables. We detected 1,019 periodic variable stars, of which 164 are T2Cs, 210 are Miras and 3 are classical Cepheids. We also found the first anomalous Cepheid in this region. We compare their photometric properties with overlapping catalogs and discuss their properties on the color-magnitude and Bailey diagrams. We present the most extensive catalog of T2Cs in the GC region to date. Offsets in E($J-K_s$) and in the reddening law cause very large ($\sim$1-2 kpc) uncertainties on distances in this region. Type II Cepheids (T2Cs) are radially pulsating variables that trace old stellar populations and provide distance estimates through their period-luminosity (PL) relation. We trace the structure of old stars in the Bulge using new distance estimates and kinematic properties of T2Cs. We present new NIR photometry of T2Cs in the bulge from the VVV survey. We provide the largest sample (894 stars) of T2Cs with JHKs observations that have accurate periods from the OGLE catalog. Our analysis makes use of the Ks-band time-series to estimate mean magnitudes and distances by means of the PL relation. To constrain the kinematic properties of our targets, we complement our analysis with proper motions (PMs) based on both VVV and Gaia DR2. We derive an empirical Ks-band PL relation that depends on Galactic longitude and latitude: Ks0=(10.66+-0.02)-(2.21+-0.03)*(logP-1.2)-(0.020+-0.003)*l+(0.050+-0.008)*|b| mag; individual extinction corrections are based on a 3D reddening map. Our targets display a centrally concentrated distribution, with solid evidence of ellipsoidal symmetry--similar to the RR Lyrae (RRL) ellipsoid--and a few halo outliers up to >100 kpc. We obtain a distance from the Galactic center of R0=8.46+-0.03(stat.)+-0.11(syst.) kpc. We also find evidence that the bulge T2Cs belong to a kinematically hot population, as the tangential velocity components (sigma vl*=104.2+-3.0 km/s and sigma vb=96.8+-5.5 km/s) agree within 1.2sigma. Moreover, the difference between absolute and relative PM is in good agreement with the PM of Sgr A* from VLBA measures. We conclude that bulge T2Cs display an ellipsoidal distribution and have kinematics similar to RRLs, which are other tracers of the old, low-mass stellar population. Several recent studies have demonstrated that the Galactic bulge hosts two components with different mean metallicities, and possibly different spatial distribution and kinematics. As a consequence, both the metallicity distribution and the radial velocity of bulge stars vary across different line of sights. We present here the metallicity distribution function of red clump stars in 26 fields spread across a wide area of the bulge, with special emphasis on fields close to Galactic plane, at latitudes b=-2 and b=-1, that were not explored before. This paper includes new metallicities from a sample of about 5000 K giant stars, observed at spectral resolution R=6500, in the Calcium II Triplet region. They are the main dataset of the GIRAFFE Inner Bulge Survey. As part of the same survey we have previously published results for a sample of about 600 K giant stars, at latitude b=-4 , derived from higher resolution spectra (R=22,500). Results. The combined sample allows us to trace and characterize the metal poor and metal rich bulge populations down to the inner bulge. We present a density map for each of the two components. Contrary to the expectations from previous works, we found the metal poor population to be more centrally concentrated than the metal rich one, and with a more axisymmetric spatial distribution. The metal rich population, on the other hand, is arranged in a boxy distribution, consistent with an edge-on bar. By coupling metallicities and radial velocities we show that the metal poor population has a velocity dispersion that varies rather mildly with latitude. On the contrary, the metal rich population has a low velocity dispersion far from the plane (b=-8.5), but it has a steeper gradient with latitude, becoming higher than the metal poor one in the innermost field (b=-1).
