Abstract

OSIRIS-REx will return pristine samples of carbonaceous asteroid Bennu. This article describes how pristine was defined based on expectations of Bennu and on a realistic understanding of what is achievable with a constrained schedule and budget, and how that definition flowed to requirements and implementation. To return a pristine sample, the OSIRIS- REx spacecraft sampling hardware was maintained at level 100 A/2 and <180 ng/cm2 of amino acids and hydrazine on the sampler head through precision cleaning, control of materials, and vigilance. Contamination is further characterized via witness material exposed to the spacecraft assembly and testing environment as well as in space. This characterization provided knowledge of the expected background and will be used in conjunction with archived spacecraft components for comparison with the samples when they are delivered to Earth for analysis. Abstract

In May of 2011, NASA selected the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) asteroid sample return mission as the third mission in the New Frontiers program. The other two New Frontiers missions are New Horizons, which explored Pluto during a flyby in July 2015 and is on its way for a flyby of Kuiper Belt object 2014 MU69 on Jan. 1, 2019, and Juno, an orbiting mission that is studying the origin, evolution, and internal structure of Jupiter. The spacecraft departed for near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu aboard an United Launch Alliance Atlas V 411 evolved expendable launch vehicle at 7:05 p.m. EDT on September 8, 2016, on a seven-year journey to return samples from Bennu. The spacecraft is on an outbound-cruise trajectory that will result in a rendezvous with Bennu in August 2018. The science instruments on the spacecraft will survey Bennu to measure its physical, geological, and chemical properties, and the team will use these data to select a site on the surface to collect at least 60 g of asteroid regolith. The team will also analyze the remote-sensing data to perform a detailed study of the sample site for context, assess Bennus resource potential, refine estimates of its impact probability with Earth, and provide ground-truth data for the extensive astronomical data set collected on this asteroid. Abstract

Establishing the abundance and physical properties of regolith and boulders on asteroids is crucial for understanding the formation and degradation mechanisms at work on their surfaces. Using images and thermal data from NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft, we show that asteroid (101955) Bennu's surface is globally rough, dense with boulders, and low in albedo. The number of boulders is surprising given Bennu's moderate thermal inertia, suggesting that simple models linking thermal inertia to particle size do not adequately capture the complexity relating these properties. At the same time, we find evidence for a wide range of particle sizes with distinct albedo characteristics. Our findings imply that ages of Bennu's surface particles span from the disruption of the asteroid's parent body (boulders) to recent in situ production (micrometre-scale particles).

Abstract

The OSIRIS-REx mission (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security Regolith Explorer) is the third NASA New Frontiers mission. It is scheduled for launch in 2016. The primary objective of the mission is to return at least 60 g of "pristine" material from the B-type near- Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu, which is spectrally similar to organic-rich CI or CM meteorites [1]. The study of these samples will advance our understanding of materials available for the origin of life on Earth or elsewhere. The spacecraft will rendezvous with Bennu in 2018 and spend at least a year characterizing the asteroid before executing a maneuver to recover a sample of regolith in the touch-and-go sample acquisition mechanism (TAGSAM). The TAGSAM and sample is stowed in the sample return capsule (SRC) and returned to Earth in 2023.

Abstract

Introduction: In 2009 the Augustine Commission identified near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) as high profile destinations for human exploration missions beyond the Earth-Moon system as part of the Flexible Path. More recently the U.S. presidential administration directed NASA to include NEAs as destinations for future human exploration with the goal of sending astronauts to a NEA in the mid to late 2020s. This directive became part of the official National Space Policy of the United States of America as of June 28, 2010. NEA Space-Based Survey and Robotic Precursor Missions: The most suitable targets for human missions are NEAs in Earth-like orbits with long synodic periods. However, these mission candidates are often not observable from Earth until the timeframe of their most favorable human mission opportunities, which does not provide an appropriate amount of time for mission development. A space-based survey telescope could more efficiently find these targets in a timely, affordable manner. Such a system is not only able to discover new objects, but also track and characterize objects of interest for human space flight consideration. Those objects with characteristic signatures representative of volatile-rich or metallic materials will be considered as top candidates for further investigation due to their potential for resource utilization and scientific discovery. Once suitable candidates have been identified, precursor spacecraft are required to perform basic reconnaissance of a few NEAs under consideration for the human-led mission. Robotic spacecraft will assess targets for potential hazards that may pose a risk to the deep space transportation vehicle, its deployable assets, and the crew. Additionally, the information obtained about the NEA's basic physical characteristics will be crucial for planning operational activities, designing in-depth scientific/engineering investigations, and identifying sites on the NEA for sample collection. Human Exploration Considerations: These missions would be the first human expeditions to interplanetary bodies beyond the Earth-Moon system and would prove useful for testing technologies required for human missions to Mars, Phobos and Deimos, and other Solar System destinations. Current analyses of operational concepts suggest that stay times of 15 to 30 days may be possible at a NEA with total mission duration limits of 180 days or less. Hence, these missions would undoubtedly provide a great deal of technical and engineering data on spacecraft operations for future human space exploration while simultaneously conducting detailed investigations of these primitive objects with instruments and equipment that exceed the mass and power capabilities delivered by robotic spacecraft. All of these activities will be vital for refinement of resource characterization/identification and development of extraction/utilization technologies to be used on airless bodies under low- or micro-gravity conditions. In addition, gaining enhanced understanding of a NEA s geotechnical properties and its gross internal structure will assist the development of hazard mitigation techniques for planetary defense. Conclusions: The scientific, resource utilization, and hazard mitigation benefits, along with the programmatic and operational benefits of a human venture beyond the Earth-Moon system, make a piloted sample return mission to a NEA using NASA s proposed human exploration systems a compelling endeavor.

Abstract

Over the past several years, much attention has been focused on the human exploration of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). Two independent NASA studies examined the feasibility of sending piloted missions to NEAs [1, 2], and in 2009, the Augustine Commission identified NEAs as high profile destinations for human exploration missions beyond the Earth-Moon system [3]. More recently the current U.S. presidential administration directed NASA to include NEAs as destinations for future human exploration with the goal of sending astronauts to a NEA in the mid to late 2020s. This directive became part of the official National Space Policy of the United States of America as of June 28, 2010 [4]. Detailed planning for such deep space exploration missions and identifying potential NEAs as targets for human spaceflight requires selecting objects from the ever growing list of newly discovered NEAs. Hence NASA developed and implemented the Near-Earth Object (NEO) Human Space Flight (HSF) Accessible Target Study (NHATS), which identifies potential candidate objects on the basis of defined dynamical trajectory performance constraints.

More recently the current U.S. presidential administration directed NASA to include NEAs as destinations for future human exploration with the goal of sending astronauts to a NEA in the mid to late 2020s. Dynamical Assessment: The current near-term NASA human spaceflight capability is in the process of being defined while the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) and Space Launch System (SLS) are still in development. Hence, those NEAs in more accessible heliocentric orbits relative to a minimal interplanetary exploration capability will be considered for the first missions. If total mission durations for the first voyages to NEAs are to be kept to less than one year, with minimal velocity changes, then NEA rendezvous missions ideally will take place within 0.1 AU of Earth (approx about 5 million km or 37 lunar distances). Human Exploration Considerations: These missions would be the first human expeditions to inter-planetary bodies beyond the Earth-Moon system and would prove useful for testing technologies required for human missions to Mars, Phobos and Deimos, and other Solar System destinations. Abstract

In dem Artikel analysieren die Autoren die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen dem ESVG 2010 und den Internationalen Rechnungslegungsstandards für den öffentlichen Sektor (International Public Sector Accounting Standards/IPSAS), herausgegeben vom IPSAS Board. Mit dieser Analyse soll zum besseren Verständnis der Finanzinformationen beigetragen werden, die die öffentlichen Einheiten in ihren Jahresrechnungen vorlegen. Dabei kommen die Autoren zu dem Schluss, dass die Jahresrechnungen öffentlicher Einheiten, die nach allgemein anerkannten Rechnungslegungsgrundsätzen erstellt und mit einem Vermerk eines Rechnungshofs oder eines Wirtschaftsprüfers versehen sind, einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Zustandekommen der Statistiken über die öffentlichen Finanzen und damit zur Überwachung der Finanzlage von Ländern durch die Europäische Kommission leisten können. Die Schuldenkrise in den Ländern der Europäischen Union führte zu einem starken Anstieg des Interesses an der Finanzlage der EU-Mitgliedstaaten und an einer transparenten Finanzberichterstattung. Dabei geht es um die Frage: Inwiefern unterscheidet sich das ESVG, das Statistiksystem, das die Regierungen Europas anwenden, um ihre Finanzlage in vergleichbarer Form überwachen zu können, vom IPSAS-Berichterstattungssystem, und welchen Beitrag kann das IPSAS zum Zustandekommen guter Statistiken leisten?

Abstract

During its approach to asteroid (101955) Bennu, NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft surveyed Bennu's immediate environment, photometric properties, and rotation state. Discovery of a dusty environment, a natural satellite, or unexpected asteroid characteristics would have had consequences for the mission's safety and observation strategy. Here we show that spacecraft observations during this period were highly sensitive to satellites (sub-meter scale) but reveal none, although later navigational images indicate that further investigation is needed. We constrain average dust production in September 2018 from Bennu's surface to an upper limit of 150 g s-1 averaged over 34 min. Bennu's disk-integrated photometric phase function validates measurements from the pre-encounter astronomical campaign. We demonstrate that Bennu's rotation rate is accelerating continuously at 3.63 ± 0.52 × 10-6 degrees day-2, likely due to the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect, with evolutionary implications.

Abstract

Background and Aims Diacetyl accumulation in wine, which has undergone malolactic fermentation by O enococcus oeni, is often associated with aromatic off-flavours. Characterisation of the diacetyl-related metabolic pathway helps to explain bacterial diacetyl formation during winemaking. The present study describes the time-dependent formation of diacetyl during the vinification process after simultaneous, induced malolactic fermentation by freeze-dried O . oeni on the basis of gene-expression analysis of the citrate- and pyruvate-derived pathways. Methods and Results After simultaneously induced malolactic fermentation in Pinot Blanc by O . oeni, the dynamics of diacetyl formation were compared with citrate consumption and gene-expression of the diacetyl-related metabolic pathways. Diacetyl concentration showed two maxima: the first increase was primarily influenced by the activity of S accharomyces cerevisiae; however, the second increase was induced only by O . oeni and correlates with bacterial citrate degradation. Expression of the alsS gene showed two significant responses; however, only the second response was affected by the citrate-associated genes maeP and citE. Additionally, alsD and butA 2 were found to be continuously underexpressed during the winemaking process. Conclusions Taken together, we suggest that diacetyl accumulation during the vinification process by O . oeni is affected by citrate fermentation. The diacetyl-related alsS gene, however, is also overexpressed independently by other substrates, which may also increase the intracellular pyruvate level resulting in diacetyl formation. Significance of the Study Characterisation of the time-dependent diacetyl accumulation and its degradation during the vinification process is essential for the development of strategies that focus on the suppression of the diacetyl concentration below the sensory threshold. Abstract

The role of phospholipid in the binding of coenzyme, NAD(H), to 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, a lipid-requiring membrane enzyme, has been studied with the ultrafiltration binding method, which we optimized to quantitate weak ligand binding (KD in the range 10-100 microM). 3-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase has a specific requirement of phosphatidylcholine (PC) for optimal function and is a tetramer quantitated both for the apodehydrogenase, which is devoid of phospholipid, and for the enzyme reconstituted into phospholipid vesicles in either the presence or absence of PC. We find that (i) the stoichiometry for NADH and NAD binding is 0.5 mol/mol of enzyme monomer (2 mol/mol of tetramer); (ii) the dissociation constant for NADH binding is essentially the same for the enzyme reconstituted into the mixture of mitochondrial phospholipids (MPL) (KD = 15 +/- 3 microM) or into dioleoyl-PC (KD = 12 +/- 3 microM); (iii) the binding of NAD+ to the enzyme-MPL complex is more than an order of magnitude weaker than NADH binding (KD approximately 200 microM versus 15 microM) but can be enhanced by formation of a ternary complex with either 2-methylmalonate (apparent KD = 1.1 +/- 0.2 microM) or sulfite to form the NAD-SO3- adduct (KD = 0.5 +/- 0.1 microM); (iv) the binding stoichiometry for NADH is the same (0.5 mol/mol) for binary (NADH alone) and ternary complexes (NADH plus monomethyl malonate); (v) binding of NAD+ and NADH together totals 0.5 mol of NAD(H)/mol of enzyme monomer, i.e., two nucleotide binding sites per enzyme tetramer; and (vi) the binding of nucleotide to the enzyme reconstituted with phospholipid devoid of PC is weak, being detected only for the NAD+ plus 2-methylmalonate ternary complex (apparent KD approximately 50 microM or approximately 50-fold weaker binding than that for the same complex in the presence of PC). The binding of NADH by equilibrium dialysis or of spin-labeled analogues of NAD+ by EPR spectroscopy gave complementary results, indicating that the ultrafiltration studies approximated equilibrium conditions. In addition to specific binding of NAD(H) to 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, we find significant binding of NAD(H) to phospholipid vesicles. An important new finding is that the nucleotide binding site is present in 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase in the absence of activating phospholipid since (a) NAD+, as the ternary complex with 2-methylmalonate, binds to the enzyme reconstituted with phospholipid devoid of PC and (b) the apodehydrogenase, devoid of phospholipid, binds NADH or NAD-SO3- weakly (half-maximal binding at approximately 75 microM NAD-SO3- and somewhat weaker binding for NADH).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract

Ethylene polymerization reactions with many Ziegler–Natta catalysts exhibit a number of features that differentiate them from polymerization reactions of α olefins: (1) a relatively low ethylene reactivity, (2) markedly higher polymerization rates in the presence of α olefins, (3) a high reaction order with respect to ethylene concentration, and (4) a strong reversible rate depression in the presence of hydrogen. A detailed kinetic analysis of ethylene polymerization reactions1 provided the basis for a new kinetic scheme that postulates the equilibrium formation of Ti&bond;C2H5 species with the H atom in the methyl group β-agostically coordinated to the Ti atom in an active center. This mechanism predicts several new features of ethylene polymerization reactions, one being that chain initiation via insertion of any α-olefin molecule into the Ti&bond;H bond should proceed with an increased probability compared to that via ethylene insertion into the same bond. As a result, a significant fraction of ethylene/α-olefin copolymer chains should contain α-olefin units as the starting units. This article provides experimental data supporting this prediction on the basis of both a detailed structural analysis of co-oligomers formed in ethylene/1-pentene and ethylene/4-methyl-1-pentene copolymerization reactions and a spectroscopic analysis of chain ends in the copolymers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract

Kinetics of ethylene homopolymerization reactions and ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization reactions using a supported Ziegler–Natta catalyst was carried out over a broad range of reaction conditions. The kinetic data were analyzed using a concept of multicenter catalysis with different centers that respond differently to changes in reaction parameters. The catalyst contains five types of active centers that differ in the molecular weights of material they produce and in their copolymerization ability. In ethylene homopolymerization reactions, each active center has a high reaction order with respect to ethylene concentration, close to the second order. In ethylene/α-olefin copolymerization reactions, the centers that have poor copolymerization ability retain this high reaction order, whereas the centers that have good copolymerization ability change the reaction order to the first order. Hydrogen depresses activity of each type of center in the homopolymerization reactions in a reversible manner; however, the centers that copolymerize ethylene and α-olefins well are not depressed if an α-olefin is present in the reaction medium. Introduction of an α-olefin significantly increases activity of those centers, which are effective in copolymerizing it with ethylene but does not affect the centers that copolymerize ethylene and α-olefins poorly. To explain these kinetic features, a new reaction scheme is proposed. It is based on a hypothesis that the Ti—C2H5 bond in active centers has low reactivity due to the equilibrium formation of a Ti—C2H5 species with the H atom in the methyl group β-agostically coordinated to the Ti atom in an active center. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 40. Long-term nutrient starvation of continuously cultured (glucose-limited) Selenomonas ruminantium

Abstract

Selenomonas ruminantium, a strictly anaerobic ruminal bacterium, was grown at various dilution rates (D = 0.05, 0.25, and 0.35 h-1) under glucose-limited continuous culture conditions. Suspensions of washed cells prepared anaerobically in mineral buffer were subjected to nutrient starvation (24 to 36 h; 39 degrees C; N2 atmosphere). Regardless of growth rate, viability declined logarithmically, and within about 2.5 h, about 50% of the populations were nonviable. After 24 h of starvation, the numbers of viable cells appeared to be inversely related to growth rate, the highest levels occurring with the slowest grown population. Cell dry weight, carbohydrate, protein, ribonucleic acid (RNA), and deoxyribonucleic acid declined logarithmically during starvation, and the decline rates of each were generally greater with cells grown at higher D values. Both cellular carbohydrate and RNA declined substantially during the first 12 h of starvation. Most of the cellular RNA that disappeared was found in the suspending buffer as low-molecular-weight, orcinol-positive materials. During growth, S. ruminantium made a variety of fermentation acids from glucose, but during starvation, acetate was the only acid made from catabolism of cellular material. Addition of glucose or vitamins to starving cell suspensions did not decrease loss of viability, whereas a starvation in the spent culture medium resulted in a slight decrease in the rate of viability loss. Overall, the data indicate that S. ruminantium strain D has very little survival capacity under the conditions tested compared with other bacterial species that have been studied.
