Abstract: International audience; The evolution of hydroclimate in East Asia during the Pliocene—a potential analog of the future greenhouse climate—remains highly uncertain. Here we reconstruct changes in the hydroclimate of Northern China during this epoch. Our results reveal previously undocumented severe drought conditions that persisted through the early Pliocene with a significantly greater magnitude than suggested by other records. Using a broad hierarchy of climate simulations, we find that reduction in the Pacific meridional sea surface temperature (SST) gradient has particularly strong impacts on precipitation over Northern China, which suggests its key role in maintaining drought conditions during the early Pliocene. The weaker Pacific meridional SST gradient causes the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon precipitation over this region via a reduction of atmospheric northward moisture transport from the ocean, which enhances aridity inland. Our results highlight the fundamental control of the tropical ocean on the extra-tropical hydrological cycle.

Abstract: International audience; In the recent years, exceptional fossil sites have revealed astonishing details on the anatomy, lifestyles and behaviour of Cambrian animals but surprisingly, very little is known about one of their most vital features, reproduction. We describe here in situ eggs (clusters of 3 to 30 oocytes) in the tube-dwelling priapulid worm Paraselkirkia sinica from the Cambrian Stage 3 Xiaoshiba Lagerstätte (ca. 514 Ma, South China). These oocytes were accommodated within paired tubular ovaries located in the posterior half of the primary body cavity as in modern meiobenthic priapulid worms, thus indicating that the general organization of female tubular gonads in priapulid worms has remained virtually unchanged for half a billion years. Our findings provide for the first time, key information on the reproductive organs and strategies of early ecdysozoans, a huge animal clade that dominated Cambrian marine ecosystems and accounts for a large part of today's biodiversity (e.g. arthropods). Moreover, we also emphasize the critical role of ecology on the reproductive strategies and lifestyles of both modern and Cambrian worms.

Abstract: International audience; More accurate normal fault mapping and more recently constrained extension rates in southern and central Tibet allow to better discuss the mechanical processes responsible for the distribution of extension in Tibet. First, we show that the location of the rifts in southern Tibet south of the Karakorum-Jiali fault zone (KJFZ) does not exactly correspond to that of the rigid Indian lower lithosphere flattening below southern Tibet (underthrusting) inferred by P-waves global tomography, thus suggesting an absence of mechanical coupling between the two processes. Instead, E-W extension south of the KJFZ appears primarily due to divergent, orthogonal thrusting along the curved Himalayan arc, as proposed earlier. North of the KJFZ however, lower amplitude extension, distributed on numerous scattered normal faults in the western Qiangtang terrane, absorbs distributed eastward extrusion, while eastern Qiangtang is extruded more rigidly by the Xianshuihe fault, following a slip-line resulting from in-plane forces due to the collision/indenter, visible as a major discontinuity in the GPS velocity field.

Abstract: International audience; The eastern margin of the world's largest and highest orogenic plateau, the Tibetan Plateau, shows contrasted edges, with a steep topographic gradient along the Longmen Shan (LMS) north of the Xianshuihe strike-slip fault (XF), and gentler slopes across the Yalong margin to the south (Figure 1a). The driving mechanism(s) leading to such contrasts between margins are still poorly understood and have given rise to end-member models of plateau growth with different crustal structures: either a weak lower crust localizing crustal thickening ("channel flow model," e.g., Clark & Royden, 2000), or a more rigid crust, with thickening that includes the upper crust, in a brittle manner ("stepwise model," Tapponnier et al., 2001). Those two end-member models can be tested by investigating the role of thrusting mechanisms in SE Tibet. At present, upper crustal deformation of the LMS is dominated by reverse faulting with a small component of right-lateral motion, as shown by recent earthquake focal mechanisms such as that of the 2008 Mw7.9 Wenchuan earthquake (e.g., de Michele et al., 2010; Fielding et al., 2013). This event ruptured two subparallel reverse structures, the Guanxian and Beichuan thrusts (Figure 1b), with steep shallow ramps (up to 70°) which root between 15 and 25 km-depth on a sub-horizontal décollement zone (e.g.

Abstract: International audience; Although fire is considered an importantfactor in global vegetation evolution and cli- mate change, few high-resolution Miocene fire records have been obtained worldwide. Here, two independent micro-charcoal–based fire records from the northern Tibetan Plateau were analyzed; both show similar trends in micro- charcoal concentrations through time, with low abundances in the warmer Middle Miocene Climate Optimum (18–14 Ma) followed by a continuous increase throughout the late Mio- cene (14–5 Ma) cooling. Our detailed statistical analyses show that the micro-charcoal concen- tration trend is highly positively correlated to the trend in oxygen isotopes (δ18O, r = 0.94) and xerophytic species (%Xero, r = 0.95). We propose that the intensified fire frequency on the Tibetan Plateau mainly originated from the forest-steppe ecotone as a result of the continuous aridifica- tion in winter driven by the global cooling and decreased atmospheric pCO2 that occurred dur- ing 18–5 Ma, with a secondary control by the tectonic activity of the northern Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract: Handheld energy dispersive portable X-ray spectrometers (pXRF) are generally designed and used for qualitative survey applications. We developed shipboard quantitative analysis protocols for pXRF and employed the instrument to make over 2000 individual abundance measurements for a selection of major and trace elements on over 1200 m of recovered core during the eight weeks of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 352 to the Izu-Bonin forearc. pXRF analytical performance, accuracy and precision were found to be the same on powdered rock samples and on freshly cut rock surfaces, and sample results were similar within error to measurements made via shipboard ICP-OES analysis save at low abundance levels for a few elements. Instrument performance was optimal for elements between Z = 19 and Z = 40, and the system yielded reproducible data for K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, and Zr on both powdered samples and rock surfaces. Working curves developed via pXRF measurement of a suite of geologic standard reference materials and well-characterized lavas permitted accurate quantitative measurements for many of the examined elements on both sample powders and rock surfaces. Although pXRF has been sporadically employed on previous cruises, Expedition 352 is the first time a detailed, high-density chemostratigraphy of recovered core samples was collected using pXRF measurements of rock core surfaces. These high-resolution data allowed the recognition of chemically distinct eruptive units in near real-time. The rapid identification of geochemical trends vastly improved our selection of samples for shipboard and shore-based analysis, permitted a more comprehensive interpretation of our Expedition results, and provided key decision-making information for drilling operations.

Abstract: International audience; Geochemical compositions of rocks from monogenetic volcanoes in intraplate settings are commonly used to constrain their mantle source and melting processes; however, the subsequent magmatic evolution of such small-volume volcanic systems is commonly ignored. Here we present petrographic observations, mineral chemistry, whole-rock major and trace element data, and thermodynamic modeling for Quaternary ultrapotassic rocks from the Ma'anshan monogenetic volcano of Xiaogulihe in Northeast China. We use these data to evaluate the crystallization conditions and recharge and mixing processes that the magmas have experienced within the crust. The Ma'anshan volcanic products are predominantly phonotephrite and tephriphonolite. These rocks have small variations in geochemical composition with moderate SiO2 (47.29–49.4 wt%), high total alkali contents (K2O + Na2O = 9.85–11.87 wt%), and high K2O/Na2O ratios (3.18–4.21). Two types of assemblages were identified in these ultrapotassic rocks: Type-1 antecrysts (olivine and leucite) and hybrid crystals (clinopyroxene, formed by incongruent replacement of antecrysts) and type-2 autocrysts (olivine and leucite). For the type-2, normally zoned olivines, Ni decreases and Mn increases more rapidly with decreasing %Fo than for oceanic basalts, which can be explained by abundant olivine and leucite fractionation in strongly alkaline melts at shallow crustal levels (

Abstract: International audience; With its central position between the Tibetan Plateau and the Tian Shan Range, the Tarim Basin is a key element of the Cenozoic Asian orogenic system. However, a comprehensive regional study, and more particularly the quantification of shortening through this basin and its margins, are still needed to understand its role in the Cenozoic deformation of Asia. From a compilation of previous works, together with an extensive dataset of satellite, field, seismic and well data, we provide a tectonic map of the Cenozoic structures and four balanced geological transects of the Tarim Basin and its surrounding ranges. Based on this map and these cross-sections, we characterize the Cenozoic deformation of the original Proterozoic Tarim block. From structural restorations and crustal budgets, we also quantify the compressive component of this deformation. Most of the Cenozoic compressive deformation (from ~94% to 100%) is concentrated in the ranges along the block margins. To the west, up to 78 ± 23 km and 54 +24/-18 km of crustal shortening are accommodated across the compressive Western Kunlun and Southwestern Tian Shan ranges, while to the east, up to 38.6 ± 18 km and 15 +20/-15 km are accommodated across the transpressive Altyn Tagh and Southeastern Tian Shan ranges. A non-negligible amount of compressive deformation (up to ~6%) is also accommodated within the Tarim Basin by large basement-cored uplifts with a vergence synthetic to the deformation of the Tibetan Plateau edge. To the west, the Bachu uplift absorbs ~5 km of the total crustal shortening of the Western Kunlun thrust system, while to the south, the Tanan uplift accumulates ~0.6 km of the Altyn Tagh strike-slip system. Structural inheritance has a major influence on the Cenozoic deformation since ~33.3% to 100% of the total shortening is accommodated by reactivated basement structures inherited from the Protero-Paleozoic history of the Tarim block. Finally, we argue that the basement-cored uplifts in the centre of the basin imply a deformation transfer from the Tibetan Plateau to the Tian Shan, above a deep crustal decollement decoupling the deforming crust from an underlying rigid mantle.

The results showed that Na2S had significant effect on corrosion behavior of 2205 DSS in dilute HCl solutions. Slight Na2S can prevent the passive film from localized attacking of Cl− in HCl solution with a concentration lower than 0.1 mol/L. However, when the concentration of HCl solution higher than 0.137 mol/L, Na 2 S addition will tremendously promote corrosion. The results showed that there were remarkable synergistic effects between PQ, QQ and TU, especially in the three-component inhibitor PQ+QQ+TU (1.5:1.5:1). It was also indicated that the different addition sequences of the three inhibitors had a significant influence on the synergistic effect. Abstract: We present the first investigation of in situ oxygen isotopes in serpentine minerals by sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP). Chemically homogeneous samples of antigorite (d18O = 8.30 ± 0.12‰), chrysotile (d18O = 4.37 ± 0.02‰) and lizardite (d18O = 5.26 ± 0.20‰) analysed by laser fluorination are identified as potential reference materials. They were analysed by SHRIMP to assess their homogeneity compared with the San Carlos olivine, as well as for potential matrix bias and crystal orientation effects. The reproducibility achieved for all samples was ± 0.30–0.55‰ (95% confidence level). Matrix bias between antigorite/olivine and antigorite/lizardite was up to ~ +3‰ and -1‰, respectively. Crystal orientation effects were identified only in chrysotile, and no matrix bias was observed over the investigated compositional range within each serpentine mineral. The new reference materials were used to measure the oxygen isotope composition of serpentines in an ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt from Tianshan (China). By combining oxygen isotopes and trace element microanalyses, several stages of serpentinisation were recognised: (a) seafloor alteration, (b) recycling of internal metamorphic fluids during isothermal decompression and (c) shallow interaction with meteoric water during exhumation. No interaction with fluids derived from the surrounding metapelites during subduction was identified.

Abstract: International audience; The Western Kunlun mountain range is a slowly converging intracontinental orogen where deformation rates are too low to be properly quantified from geodetic techniques. This region has recorded little seismicity, but the recent July 2015 (M w 6.4) Pishan earthquake shows that this mountain range remains seismic. To quantify the rate of active deformation and the potential for major earthquakes in this region, we combine a structural and quantitative morphological analysis of the Yecheng-Pishan fold, along the topographic mountain front in the epicentral area. Using a seismic profile, we derive a structural cross section in which we identify the fault that broke during the Pishan earthquake, an 8-12 km deep blind ramp beneath the Yecheng-Pishan fold. Combining satellite images and DEMs, we achieve a detailed morphological analysis of the Yecheng-Pishan fold, where we find nine levels of incised fluvial terraces and alluvial fans. From their incision pattern and using age constraints retrieved on some of these terraces from field sampling, we quantify the slip rate on the underlying blind ramp to 0.5 to 2.5 mm/yr, with a most probable long-term value of 2 to 2.5 mm/yr. The evolution of the Yecheng-Pishan fold is proposed by combining all structural, morphological, and chronological observations. Finally, we compare the seismotectonic context of the Western Kunlun to what has been proposed for the Himalayas of Central Nepal. This allows for discussing the possibility of M ≥ 8 earthquakes if the whole decollement across the southern Tarim Basin is seismically locked and ruptures in one single event.

Abstract: Using thermochronological data and thermokinematic modeling, we constrain the timing of late Miocene exhumation of the northern portion of the Gongga batholith, located in Southeast Tibet along the Xianshuihe Fault (XF). We show that rapid exhumation started in the north of the Gongga batholith at ∼9 Ma at a rate of ∼1.85 km/Myr and slowed down since ∼4 Ma. A magmatic pulse occurring during the early Pliocene (∼4 Ma) has overprinted the rapid Miocene exhumation phase in some parts of the batholith, which record mainly early Pliocene post-magmatic cooling. Slow exhumation since ∼4 Ma is consistent with the present-day lower relief observed in the centre of the batholith, which contrasts with the rugged high peaks located to the south. We propose that the northern segment of the XF, the Yalahe fault, which is not active at present, was active between 9 and 4 Ma, forming a restraining bend that focused exhumation south of it. Since ∼4 Ma, the Selaha and the Zheduotang faults form the present-day restraining bend south of which the highest part of the massif is located, including the Gongga Shan that rises more than 3000 m above the mean elevation of the plateau. In the north of the batholith, similar peaks have been removed since the Miocene by local relief reduction at high elevations. Considering that the onset of motion along the XF is contemporaneous with the onset of rapid exhumation recorded along the Kangding transect at ∼9 Ma and a total offset of ∼62 km documented for the XF, the average slip rate of the XF is ∼7 mm/yr since 9 Ma.

Abstract: International audience; We present a new stratigraphy of the Jianchuan basin, one of the largest Cenozoic sedimentary basins in southeastern Tibet. This basin was regarded as recording sedimentation from the Eocene up to the Pliocene, and as such has been the focus of several studies aiming at constraining the environmental, tectonic and topographic evolution of the area. Within the Shuanghe and Jianchuan formations thirteen new zircon U/Pb ages and one biotite 40Ar/39Ar age of interbedded and cross-cutting ultrapotassic magmatic rocks show that a brief magmatic event occurred from ~ 35.7 to ~ 34.5 Ma (35.2 ± 0.4 Ma on average). The uppermost formation (Jianchuan Fm), supposedly Pliocene in age, is related to this magmatic event and is 35.4 ± 0.8 Ma old. All sedimentary formations are thus Eocene in age, with neither Oligocene nor Miocene sediments. The coal-bearing Shuanghe Formation yields a fossil of a large amynodontid typical of the Upper Eocene Ergilian interval (37.2 to 33.9 Ma). Sedimentation of the Shuanghe Formation took place in a short time interval at ~ 35.9 ± 0.9 Ma, after a large-scale drainage reorganization that induced the abandonment of a large braided-river system. This reorganization was possibly linked with the initiation of the left-lateral Ailao-Shan Red River fault and/or to widespread magmatism in the Jianchuan basin. Previous high paleoaltitude estimates for the Jianchuan basin are thoroughly re-evaluated and yield a value of 1200 ± 1200 m.a.s.l. for the Upper Eocene.

Abstract: International audience; The Mesozoic–Cenozoic uplift history of South Tianshan has been reconstructed in many ways using thermochronological analyses for the rocks from the eastern Kuqa Depression. The main difference in the reconstructions concerns the existence and importance of Early Cretaceous and Paleogene tectonic activities, but the existence of a Cenozoic differential uplift in the Kuqa Depression remains enigmatic. Here, we present new apatite fission-track ages obtained for 12 sandstone samples from the well-exposed Early Triassic to Quaternary sequence of the Kapushaliang section in the western Kuqa Depression. The results reveal that there were four pulses of tectonic exhumation, which occurred during the Early Cretaceous (peak ages of 112 and 105 Ma), Late Cretaceous (peak age of 67 Ma), Paleocene–Eocene (peak ages at 60, 53, and 36 Ma), and early Oligocene to late Miocene (central ages spanning 30–11 Ma and peak ages of 23 and 14 Ma), respectively. A review of geochronological and geological evidence from both the western and eastern Kuqa Depression is shown as follows. (1) The major exhumation of South TiansShan during the Early Cretaceous was possibly associated with docking of the Lhasa block with the southern margin of the Eurasian plate. (2) The Late Cretaceous uplift of the range occurred diachronically due to the far-field effects of the Kohistan-Dras Arc and Lhasa block accretion. (3) The Paleogene uplift in South Tianshan initially corresponded to the far-field effects of the India–Eurasia collision. (4) The rapid exhumation in late Cenozoic was driven by the continuous far-field effects of the collision between India and Eurasia plates. The apatite fission-track ages of 14–11 Ma suggest that late Cenozoic exhumation in the western Kuqa Depression prevailed during the middle to late Miocene, markedly later than the late Oligocene to early Miocene activity in the eastern segment. It can be hypothesized that a possible differential uplift in time occurred in the Kuqa Depression during the late Cenozoic.

Abstract: International audience; Lithium elemental and isotopic compositions of olivines in peridotite xenoliths from Hebi in the North China Craton provide direct evidence for the highly variable δ7Li in Archean lithospheric mantle. The δ7Li in the cores of olivines from the Hebi high-Mg# peridotites (Fo > 91) show extreme variation from −27 to +21, in marked deviation from the δ7Li range of fresh MORB (+1.6 to +5.6) although the Li abundances of the olivines are within the range of normal mantle (1–2 ppm). The Li abundances and δ7Li characteristics of the Hebi olivines could not have been produced by recent diffusive-driven isotopic fractionation of Li and therefore the δ7Li in the cores of these olivines record the isotopic signature of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Our data demonstrate that abnormal δ7Li may be preserved in the ancient lithospheric mantle as observed in our study from the central North China Craton, which suggest that the subcontinental lithospheric mantle has experienced modification of fluid/melt derived from recycled oceanic crust.

Abstract: Oxygen isotope signatures of ruby and sapphire megacrysts, combined with trace-element analysis, from the Mbuji-Mayi kimberlite, Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Changle alkali basalt, China, provide clues to specify their origin in the deep Earth. At Mbuji-Mayi, pink sapphires have 8180 values in the range 4.3 to 5.4 parts per thousand (N=10) with a mean of 4.9 +/- 0.4 parts per thousand, and rubies from 5.5 to 5.6 parts per thousand (N=3). The Ga/Mg ratio of pink sapphires is between 1.9 and 3.9, and in rubies, between 0.6 and 2.6. The blue or yellow sapphires from Changle have delta O-18 values from 4.6 to 5.2 parts per thousand, with a mean of 4.9 +/- 0.2 parts per thousand (N=9). The Ga/Mg ratio is between 5.7 and 11.3. The homogenous isotopic composition of ruby suggests a derivation from upper mantle xenoliths (garnet lherzolite, pyroxenite) or metagabbros and/or lower crustal garnet clinopyroxenite eclogite-type xenoliths included in kimberlites. Data from the pink sapphires from Mbuji-Mayi suggest a mantle origin, but different probable protoliths: either subducted oceanic protolith transformed into eclogite with delta O-18 values buffered to the mantle value, or clinopyroxenite protoliths in peridotite. The Changle sapphires have a mantle O-isotope signature. They probably formed in syenitic magmas produced by low degree partial melting of a spinel Iherzolite source. The kimberlite and the alkali basalt acted as gem conveyors from the upper mantle up to the surface.

Abstract: International audience; The Litang fault system that crosses the Litang Plateau, a low relief surface at high elevation (~4200–4800 m above sea level) that is not affected by regional incision, provides the opportunity to study exhumation related to tectonics in the SE Tibetan Plateau independently of regional erosion. Combining apatite and zircon fission track with apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronologic data, we constrain the cooling history of the Litang fault system footwall along two transects. Apatite fission track ages range from 4 to 16 Ma, AHe ages from 2 to 6 Ma, and one zircon fission track age is ~99 Ma. These data imply a tectonic quiet period sustained since at least 100 Ma with a slow denudation rate of ~0.03 km/Ma, interrupted at 7 to 5 Ma by exhumation at a rate between 0.59 and 0.99 km/Ma. We relate that faster exhumation to the onset of motion along the left-lateral/normal Litang fault system. That onset is linked to a Lower Miocene important kinematic reorganization between the Xianshuihe and the Red River faults, with the eastward propagation of the Xianshuihe fault along the Xiaojiang fault system and the formation of the Zhongdian fault. Such strike-slip faults allow the sliding to the east of a wide continental block, with the Litang fault system accommodating differential motion between rigid blocks. The regional evolution appears to be guided by the strike-slip faults, with different phases of deformation, which appears more in agreement with an “hidden plate-tectonic” model rather than with a “lower channel flow” model.

Abstract: International audience; The Güira de Jauco metamorphic sole, below the Moa-Baracoa ophiolite (eastern Cuba), contains strongly deformed amphibolites formed at peak metamorphic conditions of 650–660°C, approximately 8.6 kbar (~30 km depth). The geochemistry, based on immobile elements of the amphibolites, suggests oceanic lithosphere protholiths with a variable subduction component in a supra-subduction zone environment. The geochemical similarity and tectonic relations among the amphibolites and the basic rocks from the overlying ophiolite suggest a similar origin and protholith. New hornblende 40Ar/39Ar cooling ages of 77–81 Ma obtained for the amphibolites agree with this hypothesis, and indicate formation and cooling/exhumation of the sole in Late Cretaceous times. The cooling ages, geochemical evidence for a back-arc setting of formation of the mafic protoliths, and regional geology of the region allow proposal of the inception of a new SW-dipping subduction zone in the back-arc region of the northern Caribbean arc during the Late Cretaceous (ca. 90–85 Ma). Subduction inception was almost synchronous with the main plume pulse of the Caribbean–Colombian Oceanic Plateau (92–88 Ma) and occurred around 15 million years before arc-continent collision (75 Ma–Eocene) at the northern leading edge of the Caribbean plate. This chronological framework suggests a plate reorganization process in the region triggered by the Caribbean–Colombian mantle plume.

Abstract: International audience; The Cenozoic Avaj volcano-plutonic rocks in central Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic arc (UDMA) encompass gabbro, and basalt to rhyolite, chemically akin to those from continental arcs. U–Pb geochronology on zircon yielded ages of 23.69 ± 0.48 Ma, 24.71 ± 0.38 Ma, 20.92 ± 0.14 Ma, and 19.25 ± 0.13 Ma for gabbro, basalt, trachyandesite, and rhyolite, respectively. εHf(t) values for zircon grains are ranging from − 1.4 to + 6.2. The data display narrow ranges of initial Pb isotopic ratios and εNd(t) values, implying a fairly homogeneous source. Moderate 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb, high 143Nd/144Nd ratios of the mafic samples highlight the role of mantle components. The isotopic ratios–incompatible trace elements modelings reveal ~ 2% of the melt come from the melting sediments in the petrogenesis of Avaj igneous rocks. The central UDMA with ages ranging from 42–38 Ma and 25–18 Ma, respectively, must have experienced two relatively brief periods of important magma production separated by ~ 14–15 M.y. The early period of magma production correlates with the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO), while the second magmatic period of the central UDMA is not associated with increasing CO2 contents in the atmosphere. The plutons of the older group are generally located to the east of those from the younger group suggesting a SW-directed migration of the arc following slab rollback. No systematic change of source compositions and magma formation is observed between the older and younger rocks implying similar magma sources and subduction input from the Eocene to Miocene. The potential effect of the UDMA magmatic activity on the global climate apparently does not reflect decreasing subduction of carbonate.

Abstract: International audience; Our study of the Late Cretaceous-Cenozoic extension in Eastern China is a kinematic analysis of faults (≈ 1500 striated fault data, 175 stress solutions at 90 sites) that has permitted us to separate stress fields belonging to six tectonic events. A WNW-ESE extension (1) has affected Eastern China from the Campanian to the Late Palaeocene-Early Ypresian. Under this extension, the Qinling (QLFZ) and Southern Tan-Lu (STLFZ) Fault Zones have been dextral transtensional fault zones. A first transpressional event (2) (NNE-SSW shortening) has occurred during the Late Ypresian-Lower Lutetian; the QLFZ and the STLFZ have been dextral transpressional fault zones. A NE-SW extension (3) has affected the Weihe graben during the Palaeogene; after a second transpressional event (4), the NE-SW extension (5) has been rejuvenated during the Late Miocene and the QLFZ has been a normal fault zone again and the STLFZ a sinistral transtensional fault zone; synrift subsidence has occurred in the Weihe graben. The second transpressional event (4) (WNW-ESE shortening) has occurred during the Late Oligocene-Early Miocene, during a period of uplifting and exhumation. At that time, the STLFZ and the QLFZ have become sinistral transpressional fault zones. A period of extension (6) has taken place during the Late Pliocene-Quaternary; the extensional direction has trended ≈ NNW-SSE; during this event, the QLFZ has been a sinistral transtensional fault zone and the STLFZ a dextral transtensional fault zone. These results are compared with those previously published in order to evaluate the regional significance of these tectonic events.

Abstract: International audience; Steady-state pyroxene dissolution rates in aqueous solutions have been measured at temperatures from 25 to 374°C at a pressure of 23 MPa and at neutral pH. The pyroxene is hedenbergitic clinopyroxene, of composition Na0.04Ca0.95Mg0.3Fe2+0.64Fe3+0.06Al0.04Si1.97O6. All experiments were performed at conditions far from equilibrium in Ti-alloy mixed-flow reactors. In most runs, the reactive solutions were undersaturated with respect to pyroxene and secondary minerals were rarely found at the reacted surface. The dissolution is non-stoichiometric in most cases, while the different chemical elements of the pyroxene are released at different rates. Stoichiometric steady-state dissolution was obtained in neutral solution at 100°C. The release rates of the different elements vary with temperature and solution chemistry. The dissolution rates (rSi) in neutral pH conditions increase with temperature from 25 to 300°C, reach a maximum at 300°C, and then decrease with continued temperature increase. At a given temperature, the rates decrease significantly with increasing pH of the reactive fluid and are also affected by the activities of Ca, Mg, Fe in the solution. At neutral pH, the dependence of the pyroxene dissolution rates on activities of Ca, Mg, Fe and H+ in the fluid can be expressed by the relation: log r+(T, ai) = log (A - Ea/(2.303 RT) + α log (aH+)Zi / aMiZi+) where r+ is the far-from-equilibrium dissolution rate, R the gas constant, T the absolute temperature, Zi valence of metal Mi and ai represents the activity of the subscript aqueous species. Ea equals 22.667 kJ/mole/K and A = 2.011 × 10−7 mole/cm2/s; α is the empirical reaction rate order, which can be derived from the experimental results. At temperatures below 300°C, the exchange reactions 2H+ ↔ Mi2+, where Mi2+ refers to divalent cations Mg2+, Fe2+ or Ca2+, dominate in the dissolution. The following evolution of the dissolution with temperature is proposed: at 300°C, the tetrahedral Si-O bonds break after the Mi2+−O bonds in adjacent octahedral positions have been removed by proton exchange reaction, whereas, above 300°C, the breaking of the octahedral Mi2+−O bonds occurs after adjacent tetrahedral Si-O bonds have been broken.

Abstract: International audience; Determining the slip-rate history along the right-lateral Karakorum fault (KF) is fundamental to understanding its present-day kinematic role in the deformation of Tibet. Geodetic and geologic studies suggest slip-rates of 0-11 mm/yr along this structure. Whether slip-rate variability exists along strike and/or time, or simply results from different measuring techniques/timescales, remains unknown. In order to constrain slip-rates within a timescale of 200 ka, we studied fluvial and glacial geomorphic features that are right-laterally or vertically offset by the fault by varying amounts from 7 ± 1 m to 430 ± 30 m and up to 53 ± 5 m, respectively. We constrained their ages using 10Be surface exposure dating on 141 quartz-rich samples collected on 4 lateral moraines and at 3 alluvial sites along the southernmost segment of the KF (Menshi-Kailas basin) and along the Gurla Mandhata detachment fault in the Pulan graben. From the 30° fault bend at Baer (80.5°E) to Mount Kailas area, the slip-rate along the KF is >7.1+ 3.2/␣ 1.7 mm/yr at Menshi and >7.9+ 3.2/ 2.5 mm/yr at Kailas (slip on two parallel fault strands). In the Pulan graben, the normal fault slip-rate is >1.6+ 0.4/0.3 mm/yr. Our data sug- gest that the Quaternary slip-rate along the southern KF does not decrease eastward but is constant along strike for at least 200 km, from >5-11 mm/yr in the Gar basin further north to >7-8 mm/yr in the Menshi-Kailas basin. Because no expected along-strike slip-rate gradient is observed, it implies that the KF does not end at the Kailas but must extend where the slip rate decreases, i.e. eastward along the Yarlung Zangbo suture and southward along the Gurla Mandhata-Humla fault system.

Abstract: International audience; The 400 km-long Karakax left-lateral strike-slip fault is the westernmost segment of the Altyn Tagh fault. It separates northwestern Tibet to the south from the Tarim basin to the north. The western section of the Karakax fault exhibits clear co-seismic surface ruptures of past large earthquakes. Geomorphic offset measurements from the field and high-resolution Ikonos images along 1.5 km across the Sanshiliyingfang fan and along 55 km of the fault, range from 3 to 28 m, with distinct clusters at 6 ± 2(3), 14 ± 2, 19 ± 2 and 24 ± 3 m. The cluster of the smallest offsets around 6 m (full range from 3 to 10 m) distributed over a minimum length of 55 km, is attributed to the last largest surface rupturing event that testifies of the occurrence of a magnitude Mw 7.4-7.6 earthquake along the Karakax fault. We interpret the other offset clusters as the possible repetition of similarly sized events thus favoring a characteristic slip model for the Karakax fault. In a 3 m-deep trench dug across the active trace of the fault we can identify the main rupture strands of the last and penultimate events. The penultimate event horizon, a silty-sand layer, has been radiocarbon dated at 975-1020 A.D. (AMS 14C age). It is proposed that large Mw 7.4-7.6 events with co-seismic slip of about 6 m rupture the Karakax fault with a return time of about 900 years implying an average slip-rate of about 6-7 mm/yr during the late Holocene. These results suggest that the Karakax fault is the largest left-lateral strike-slip fault at the rim of northwestern Tibet accommodating eastward movement of Tibet due to the India-Eurasia collision.

Abstract: International audience; The Aktyuz metamorphic terrane in the Kyrgyz northern Tianshan consists of granitoid gneisses and migmatites with subordinate paragneisses, greenschists, presumed meta-ophiolites, and garnet amphibolite dykes that contain HP eclogite relicts. The gneisses and migmatites were previously considered to be Archaean and Palaeoproterozoic in age on the basis of α-Pb and U-Pb multigrain zircon dating. Zircons from a post-tectonic granite were previously dated at 692 ± 15 Ma, constraining the time of main deformation and metamorphism in the Aktyuz terrane to the Precambrian. The chemical characteristics of most granitoid samples are consistent with melting of chemically evolved crustal material, which is supported by Nd and Hf isotopic data. Zircon U-Pb SHRIMP ages were obtained for the main varieties of metamorphic rocks, for a gabbro of a low-grade ophiolite complex and for several post-kinematic igneous rocks. In addition, metamorphic muscovite was dated by the 40Ar-39Ar method, and whole-rock Sm-Nd isotopic systematics were obtained on several granitoid rocks. Our magmatic zircon crystallization ages for granitoid gneisses in the Aktyuz and Kemin Complexes range from 778 ± 6 to 844 ± 9 Ma which we interpret to reflect the time of magmatic emplacement of the gneiss protoliths. These rocks reflect an episode of Neoproterozoic granitoid magmatism, which is also documented in southern Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Middle Tianshan, the Chinese Central Tianshan and the Tarim Craton. Nd and Hf isotopic systematics show these rocks to be derived from Mesoproterozoic to Archaean sources. The calc-alkaline composition of these rocks seems compatible with a subduction setting, but is most likely inherited from the source, therefore the tectonic scenario for emplacement of the gneiss protolith remains unknown. Two ages of 562 ± 7 and 541 ± 3 Ma and negative εNd(t)-values for granitoid gneisses document a later crustal melting episode. Muscovite 40Ar/39Ar ages of ca. 470 Ma for Aktyuz gneisses constrain the main fabric-forming metamorphism to the Early Palaeozoic. A migmatitic paragneiss, which was previously interpreted as Palaeoproterozoic, contains detrital zircons with an age spectrum from 503 to 1263 Ma; the youngest grain suggests a maximum Cambrian age of protolith deposition. An ophiolitic metagabbro of the Kemin Complex yielded an Early Cambrian age of 531 ± 4 Ma, which is close to the age of ophiolites in the adjacent Djalair-Naiman belt of Kazakhstan, suggesting a possible genetic link. Two samples of quartz diorite from the post-kinematic Dolpran pluton yielded Early Ordovician zircon ages of 471.9 ± 3.5 and 472.0 ± 3.1 Ma. The presence of a 783 ± 7 Ma xenocrystic zircon points at Precambrian crust at depth, which may explain an earlier, discordant apparent age obtained by multigrain zircon dating of this pluton. Undeformed rhyolite and basalt in the East Kyrgyz Range, previously classified as Neoproterozoic and Cambrian, yielded Late Ordovician ages of 451.9 ± 4.6 and 448.9 ± 5.6 Ma respectively. Our data imply that the Aktyuz terrane is not a single segment of continuous Precambrian continental crust but represents a complex amalgamation of Neoproterozoic continental and Early Palaeozoic ophiolitic slivers, which were stacked together in a subduction and collisional setting. Large fragments of continental crust were subducted to HP eclogite-facies conditions, which led to eclogite metamorphism in the mafic dykes. Abstract: International audience; The Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios of many biogenic skeletons provide useful paleotemperature estimates. As yet however, it has remained largely impossible to obtain such information from bivalve shells. In the present study, metal-to-calcium values in the hinge plate (aragonite, outer shell layer) of four ontogenetically old (85 to 374 year-old) specimens of the long-lived bivalve, Arctica islandica, were measured on a LA-ICP-MS. The shells were collected alive in 1868, 1986 and 2003 from three different localities around Iceland. With increasing ontogenetic age and decreasing growth rate, a distinct trend toward increasing Sr/Ca (max. 5.17 mmol/mol) and Mg/Ca values (max. 0.89 mmol/mol) and greater variance were observed. Three potential explanations for these trends include a reduced capacity for element selection due to cell ageing, changing metabolism and/or a relative increase in the number of organic-rich (= Mg-rich) and organic-poor (= Sr-rich) shell portions through ontogeny. Partition coefficients however, remained far below 1, indicating that physiology exerted a strong control over the element partitioning between the shells and the ambient water. After mathematical elimination of these vital effects, residuals exhibited a highly significant negative correlation (e.g., age-detrended Sr/Ca data: R = − 0.64, R2 = 0.41, p < 0.0001, growth rate-detrended Mg/Ca data: R = − 0.52, R2 = 0.27, p < 0.0001) with sea surface temperature. These results are in good agreement with results obtained from the precipitation of abiogenic aragonite. The results of the present study can help to develop new techniques to extract environmental signals from the metal-to-calcium ratios of bivalve shells.

Abstract: International audience; This contribution provides new constraints on the timing of Tibetan glacial recessions recorded by the abandonment of moraines. We present cosmogenic radionuclide 10Be inventories at 17 sites in southern and western Tibet (32 crests, 249 samples) and infer the range of permissible emplacement ages based on these analyses. Individual large embedded rock and boulder samples were collected from the crests of moraine surfaces and analyzed for 10Be abundance. We consider two scenarios to interpret the age of glacial recession leading to the moraine surface formation from these sample exposure ages: 1) Erosion of the moraine surface is insignificant and so the emplacement age of the moraines is reflected by the mean sample age; and 2) Erosion progressively exposes large boulders with little prior exposure, and so the oldest sample age records the minimum moraine emplacement age. We found that depending on the scenario chosen, the moraine emplacement age can vary by > 50% for 100 ka-old samples. We consider two scaling models for estimating the production rates of 10Be in Tibet, which has an important, although lesser, effect on inferred moraine ages. While the data presented herein effectively increase the database of sample exposure ages from Tibet by 20%, we find that uncertainties related to the interpretation of the 10Be abundance within individual samples in terms of moraine emplacement ages are sufficient to accommodate either a view in which glacial advances are associated with temperature minima or precipitation maxima that are recorded by independent paleoclimate proxies. A reanalysis of published data from moraines throughout Tibet shows that the variation we observe is not unique to our dataset but rather is a robust feature of the Tibetan moraine age database. Thus, when viewed in a similar way with other samples collected from this area, uncertainties within moraine exposure ages obscure attribution of Tibetan glacial advances to temperature minima or precipitation maxima. Our work suggests that more reliable chronologies of Tibetan glaciations will come from improvements in production rate models for this portion of the world, as well as a better understanding of the processes that form and modify these geomorphic surfaces.

Abstract: International audience; We investigate the timing of end of motion along the South Tibet Detachment System (STDS), a major normal fault system that runs parallel to the Himalayan range for more than 1500 km. Near Dinggye (similar to 28 degrees 10'N, 87 degrees 40'E), the STD dips similar to 10 +/- 5 degrees to the North and separates Paleozoic Tethyan series from Upper Himalayan Crystalline Series (UHCS). Immediately below the STD, the UHCS is highly deformed in the STD shear zone, lineations trend NNE and the shear senses are top to the NE. In micaschist, the P-T path constrained by pseudosection and garnet chemistry, shows successive metamorphic conditions of similar to 0.6 GPa and similar to 550 degrees C and 0.5 GPa and 625 degrees C. U/Pb dating of monazites and zircons in deformed and undeformed leucogranites suggests that ductile deformation lasted until at least similar to 16 Ma but ended prior to similar to 15 Ma in the STD shear zone similar to 100 m below the detachment. Ar/Ar micas ages in the footwall span between similar to 14.6 and 13.6 Ma, indicating rapid cooling down to similar to 320 degrees C, and suggesting persistence of normal faulting, at that time. The STDS is cut and offset by the N-S trending Dinggye active normal fault which initiated prior to 11 Ma thus providing a minimum bound for the end of STDS motion. These data are interpreted as reflecting 0.3 GPa (11 km) to 0.6 GPa (22 km) of exhumation along the STDS starting prior to similar to 16 Ma, ending between 13.6 and 11 Ma. The 1000 km long stretch of the STDS east of the Gurla Mandata probably stopped almost synchronously between 13 and 11 Ma ago, coevally with a sudden switch from NNE-SSW to E-W extension at the top of the accretionary prism, with a jump of the major thrust from the lower Main Central Thrust (MCTI) to the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT), and with a change in the India and Asia convergence direction. This synchronism is probably better explained in the frame of a thrust wedge or thrust system model than a lower channel flow model. West of the Gurla Mandata the STDS appears to stop 5 to 3 Ma earlier, possibly related to local interactions with the Karakorum fault in a way that needs to be understood.

Abstract: International audience; We present an integrated study of geochemistry, petrofabrics and seismic properties of strongly sheared eclogites from the Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling (CCSD) project in the Sulu ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic terrane, eastern China. First, geochemical data characterize diverse protoliths of the studied eclogites. The positive Eu- and Sr-anomalies, negative Nb anomaly and flat portion of heavy rare earth elements in coarse-grained rutile eclogites (samples B270 and B295) suggest a cumulate origin in the continental crust, whereas the negative Nb anomaly and enrichment of light rare earth elements in retrograde eclogites (samples B504, B15 and B19) imply an origin of continental basalts or island arc basalts. Second, P-wave velocities (V-p) of three typical eclogite samples were measured under confining pressures up to 500 MPa and temperatures to 700 degrees C. At 500 MPa and room temperature, the mean V-p reaches 8.50-8.53 km/s in samples B270 and B295 but drops to 7.86 km/s in sample B504, and the P-wave anisotropy changes from 1.7-2.7% to 5.5%, respectively. The pressure and temperature derivatives of V-p are larger in the retrograde eclogite than in fresh ones. Third, the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurements of the eclogites reveal random crystal preferred orientation (CPO) of garnet and pronounced CPO of omphacite, which is characterized by a strong concentration of [001]-axes sub-parallel to the lineation and of (010)-poles perpendicular to the foliation. The asymmetric CPO of omphacite in sample B270 recorded a top-to-the-south shear event during subduction of the Yangtze plate. The calculated fastest V-p is generally sub-parallel to the lineation, but a different deformation environment during exhumation could form second-order variations in omphacite CPO and affect the V-p distribution in eclogites (e.g., the fastest V-p is at similar to 35 degrees from the foliation in sample 13295). Comparison between measured and calculated seismic properties indicates that the CPO of omphacite controls the seismic anisotropy of eclogites at high pressure, and compositional layering and retrograde minerals will increase the anisotropy. Calculated P-wave velocities agree well with velocities measured at 500 MPa and room temperature for fresh eclogites, but much higher than those of retrograde eclogite. As a case study, the laboratory-derived V-p-P and V-p-T relationships were used to estimate P-wave velocities of eclogites and peridotites beneath the Western Superior Province, Canada. The results indicate that besides the fabric-induced anisotropy, the direction dependence of pressure and temperature derivatives of V-p can significantly increase seismic anisotropy of eclogites with depth, which results in eclogites being an important candidate for the seismic anisotropy in the upper mantle. Due to their very high density and velocity, garnet-rich eclogites within peridotite could be detected in seismic reflections in subduction zones.

Abstract: Zircons and monazites from 6 samples of the North Ayilari dextral shear zone (NAsz), part of the Karakorum fault zone (KFZ), have been dated with the U-Th-Pb method, using both ID-TIMS and SIMS techniques. The ages reveal (1) inheritance from several events spanning a long period between the late Archean and the Jurassic; (2) an Eocene- Oligocene magmatic event ( ~35–32 Ma); (3) an Oligo-Miocene magmatic event ( ~25–22 Ma), at least partly synkinematic to the right-lateral deformation; and (4) a period of metamorphism metasomatism ( ~22–14 Ma) interpreted as thermal and fluid advection in the shear zone. The Labhar Kangri granite located ~375 km farther Southeast along the KFZ is dated at 21.1 ± 0.3 Ma. Such occurrence of several Oligo-Miocene granites along the KFZ, some of which show evidence for synkinematic emplacement, suggests that the fault zone played an important role in the genesis and /or collection of crustal melts. We discuss several scenarios for the onset and propagation of the KFZ, and offset estimates based on the main sutures zones. Our preferred scenario is an Oligo-Miocene initiation of the fault close to the NA range, and propagation along most of its length prior to ~19 Ma. In its southern half, the averaged long-term fault-rate of the KFZ is greater than 8 to 10 mm/a, in good agreement with some shorter-term estimates based on the Indus river course, or Quaternary moraines and geodesy. Our results show the KFZ cannot be considered as a small transient fault but played a major role in the collision history. Published version

Abstract: The role of the Karakorum fault zone (KFZ) is debated. South of 33°N, ongoing dextral-oblique slip along the SW edge of the Gar basin exhumes metamorphic and magmatic rocks of the Ayilari range. Minerals have recorded a continuum of deformation from temperatures >600–400°C down to 20 Ma of deformation along the fault. Greenschist facies deformation superimposed upon the medium- to high-grade deformation marks a kinematic change from pure dextral to dextral-normal motion associated with the onset of rapid cooling. At the regional scale, the coexistence of transtension in the Gar basin with transpression documented along the Pangong range farther north suggests another example of the ‘‘zipper tectonics'' model developed along the Red River fault. The kinematic shift induced the rise of the Ayilari range starting at 16–12 Ma and the incision of major river courses. The Indus River might have become captive of the relief at this time. The river's 120 km of apparent offset implies dextral motion at a long-term rate of ca 8.5 ± 1.5 mm/yr.

Abstract: The Karakorum Fault zone (KFZ) plays an important role in understanding the formation, evolvement and deformation of the Tibetan Plateau. The high-T dextral shearing metamorphic rocks, e.g., mylonites or mylonitized gneisses-granites, locally crop out along the southeastern part of the KFZ in the Ayila Ri'gyü Range area. The SHRIMP U-Pb dating of the syn-kinematic crystallized zircons indicates that the initial age of the KFZ is ∼27 Ma, ∼10 Ma older than previous results. The extensive high-T dextral shearing along the KFZ started at least at 27–20 Ma, accompanied by the syn-kinematic emplacement of leuco-granites. Deformation and concomitant fluid circulation during shearing most likely occurred as early as at 25–13 Ma. The KFZ probably grew from southeast to northwest along the fault as a result of continuous convergence between the India plate and Eurasia plate.

Abstract: Pervasive melting of the middle crust, as inferred in Tibet and the Altiplano, probably influences the deformation of the lithosphere. To constrain strain distribution in a pervasively molten crust, we analysed the deformation in an eroded analogue of these orogens. The Ribeira-Araçuaí orogen (SE Brazil) comprises a stack of allochthons containing large volumes of anatectic and magmatic rocks. The upper allochton (∼300 km long, 50–100 km wide and >10 km thick) involves peraluminous diatexites and leucogranites resulting from partial melting of the middle crust. It overlies another allochthon containing huge early- to syn-collisional plutons intruding metasediments. Both anatexites and magmatic intrusions display a pervasive strain-induced magmatic fabric. Homogeneous strain distribution suggests inefficient localization. U–Pb ages of ∼575 Ma imply that anatexite melting was synchronous to the early- to syn-collisional magmatism. Similarity in ages magmatic and solid-state fabrics indicates that intrusions and anatexites deformed coherently with solid-state rocks while still molten, in response to a combination of gravity-driven and collision-driven deformation.

Abstract: International audience; The Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau were formed as a result of the collision of India and Asia, and provide an excellent opportunity to study the mechanical response of the continental lithosphere to tectonic stress. Geophysicists are divided in their views on the nature of this response, advocating either (1) homogeneously distributed deformation with the lithosphere deforming as a fluid continuum or (2) highly localized deformation with the lithosphere deforming as a system of blocks. The resolution of this issue has broad implications for understanding the tectonic response of continental lithosphere in general. Homogeneous deformation is supported by relatively low decadal, geodetic slip-rate estimates for the Altyn Tagh and Karakorum faults. Localized deformation is supported by high millennial, geomorphic slip rates constrained by both cosmogenic and radiocarbon dating on these faults. Based upon the agreement of rates determined by radiocarbon and cosmogenic dating, the overall linearity of offset versus age correlations, and the plateau-wide correlation of landscape evolution and climate history, the disparity between geomorphic and geodetic slip-rate determinations is unlikely to be due to the effects of surface erosion on the cosmogenic age determinations. Similarly, based upon the consistency of slip rates over various observation intervals, secular variations in slip rate appear to persist no longer than 2000 yr and are unlikely to provide reconciliation. Conversely, geodetic and geomorphic slip-rate estimates on the Kunlun fault, which does not have significant splays or associated thrust faults, are in good agreement, indicating that there is no fundamental reason why these complementary geodetic and geomorphic methods should disagree. Similarly, the geodetic and geomorphic estimates of shortening rates across the northeastern edge of the plateau are in reasonable agreement, and the geomorphic rates on individual thrust faults demonstrate a significant eastward decrease in the shortening rate. This rate decrease is consistent with the transfer of slip from the Altyn Tagh fault to genetically related thrust mountain building at its terminus. Rates on the Altyn Tagh fault suggest a similar decrease in rate, but the current data set is too small to be definitive. Overall, the high, late Pleistocene-Holocene geomorphic slip velocities on the major strike-slip faults of Tibet suggest that these faults absorb as much of India's convergence relative to Siberia as the Himalayan Main Frontal Thrust on the southern edge of the plateau.

Abstract: International audience; Insight into the spatial and temporal changes of slip-rate is essential to understand the kinematic role of large strike-slip faults in continental collision zones. Geodetic and geologic rates from present to several million years ago along the Karakorum fault range from 0 to 11 mm/yr. Here, we determine the first late Quaternary slip-rate at the southern end of the linear Bangong-Chaxikang seg- ment of the Karakorum fault, using cumula- tive offsets (20–200 m) of fans and terraces at three sites, as well as 74 new 10Be surface- exposure ages to constrain the age of these offset geomorphic markers. The rate is >3 mm/yr at sites Gun and Chaxikang, and it is >1.7–2.2 mm/yr at the Gar fan site. Together with rates obtained along the southernmost Menshi-Kailas segment, the Karakorum fault slip-rate seems to increase southeast- ward from south of Bangong Lake to Kailas (from >3 to >8 mm/yr). These Karakorum fault slip-rate data (>3–8 mm/yr), together with the total length of the fault (>1000 km) and its initiation age (>13–23 Ma), confirm that the Karakorum fault is the major fault accommodating dextral strike-slip motion NE of the western Himalayas. The dextral Karakorum fault in the south and the con- jugate left-lateral Longmu Co–Altyn Tagh fault system in the north are thus the major strike-slip faults of western Tibet, which con- tribute to eastward extrusion of Tibet.

Abstract: Wide-angle reflection-refraction profiles at crustal scale have been obtained along a 700 km transect of northeastern Tibet from six shotpoints. A combination of sampling by broadside fan-recordings and in-line profiling allows us to image increases in Moho depth towards the centre of the plateau. These occur with different styles across the two block boundaries between North Kun Lun, Bayan Har and Qang Tang, as shown also by the changes resolved in the internal architecture and layer velocities in the crust. Clear S-waves are observed: together with P-waves they bring rare constraints on the composition of crustal units, which reveals an abnormally felsic average composition for the whole crust and its lower half along the whole length of the transect. Across the North Kun Lun-Qaidam block, variations of crustal thickness are detected, with Moho depth between 55 and 65 km, and an inverse correlation with basement topography. In the north of the Bayan Har block, a strong heterogeneity in the middle of the 70 km thick crust is shown. As suggested from synthetic seismograms modelling, it may result from thin layer inclusion marking the northward tectonic superposition of the Bayan Har crust on the North Kun Lun crust. As imaged by a fan profile, the corresponding upper part could have been transported northwards to thicken also the upper crust of the present North Kun Lun block. In the north of Qang Tang, a model is obtained with a 75-km thick crust and a lower half of the crust with average velocities characteristic of felsic composition. From Bayan Har to Qang Tang, variations of deep architecture are documented across the Jinsha suture and Xianshuihe fault from recording in-line and broadside to several shotpoints. Together with the felsic composition of the lower part of the crust, a Moho offset suggests the imbrication of the Bayan Har crust in the Qang Tang lithosphere between a south-dipping Moho above and a north-dipping Moho below. A model of indentation of the Qang Tang by an originally thinner Bayan Har crust and lithosphere, with part of the Qang Tang brought to greater depth would also be consistent also with the Moho topography across the transition from the Qang Tang to Bayan Har, as imaged by fan profile. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: International audience; The Yecheng-Shiquanhe profile runs over the western Tibetan Plateau from the south margin of the Tarim Basin, crossing the west Kunlun orogeny, to the east of Karakorum. The authors applied body waves to 3-dimensional inversion of travel time residuals and outlined the deep tectonic pattern of the northwestern Tibetan Plateau. An image was obtained, showing that the Tarim lithosphere is subducted southwards underneath the west Kunlun orogeny at an angle of 40° and a depth of 280 km. Surface structures are well expressed in the image and can be further traced in deeper levels. The prominent finding is that the Gozha Fault and Karakax Fault are likely to join together beyond a depth of ~200 km, which is the very zone of active seismicity.

Abstract: Knowing the evolution history of the climate systems in the Asian inland dominated by either the Westerlies or the Asian monsoon, and understanding their associated driving mechanisms are crucial for assessing future trends of climate and environmental conditions in this region, but both the evolution and mechanisms are still under debate. In this study, we present a comparative analysis of massive data from an accurately dated drill core retrieved from the Westerlies controlled western Qaidam Basin (QB), with records from the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) dominated by the East Asia summer monsoon (EASM), to track the time and frequency domain evolution patterns and dynamic changes of the QB and the CLP systems. The results infer two main conclusions. First, a critical transition in the evolution of Qaidam paleolake occurred at 0.8–0.6 Ma, characterized by striking changes in proxy variations and a system shift from periodic variations to more irregular fluctuations after 0.6 Ma. Second, a similar evolution pattern prevailed in the Qaidam paleolake region and in the EASM-dominated CLP between ∼2.7 and ∼1.2 Ma, but a divergence of both systems started at ∼1.2 Ma and fully established after 0.6 Ma, when largely fluctuating climate conditions in the QB with a distinct drying trend was accompanied by synchronous largely fluctuated EASM with an increasing trend after 0.6 Ma. We suggest that ice sheet expansion in the Northern Hemisphere, promoted by co-occurrence of low obliquity amplitudes and low eccentricity, drove both systems across a threshold at ∼1.2 Ma, and the internal forcing due to glaciation disturbed the previous response of both systems to solar insolation and led to the divergence of two systems. At ∼0.9–0.8 Ma, a node of the 1.2-Myr obliquity cycle co-occurred with an eccentricity minimum, which together with coeval decrease in atmospheric CO2 concentration, could have facilitated a striking expansion of ice sheets. The resulting more equatorial and zonally oriented northern hemisphere westerly jet could serve as key factor leading to the final collapse of Qaidam paleolake after ∼0.6 Ma, and the divergence of the QB and the CLP systems.

Abstract: International audience; Numerous issues remain concerning palaeobiology, palaeoecology, and biostratigraphy of Cloudina, an iconic tubular organism of the Ediacaran period. In this study, accumulations of Cloudina are described from the topmost bed of the Dengying Formation in the Baiguotang section of the eastern Three Gorges area, South China. The massive occurrence of Cloudina refutes any possibility of setting the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary (E-CB) beneath the lithological transition between Dengying and Yanjiahe formations in this area. The age of the Cloudina aggregates is younger than 540.6 Ma based on a concordia 206 Pb/ 238 U age of 540.6 ± 3.4 Ma obtained from underlying upper part of the Baimatuo Member (Baiguotang section), which is consistent with the 539 Ma E-CB reported from southern Namibia. Combining fossil evidence provided by Asteridium-Heliosphaeridium-Comasphaeridium acritarchs and Anabarites trisulcatus-Protohertzina anabarica small shelly fossil assemblages and the Basal Cambrian Carbon isotope Excursion (BACE), we tentatively place the E-C boundary within the lower part of the Yanjiahe Formation, close to the BACE excursion located in the lower part of the Yanjiahe Formation in the southern Huangling Anticline.

Abstract: The deep time (pre-Quaternary) glacial record is an important means to understand the growth, development, and recession of the global cryosphere on very long timescales (106–108 Myr). Sedimentological description and interpretation of outcrops has traditionally played an important role. Whilst such data remain vital, new insights are now possible thanks to freely accessible aerial and satellite imagery, the widespread availability and affordability of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles, and accessibility to 3D rendering software. In this paper, we showcase examples of glaciated landscapes from the Cryogenian, Ediacaran, Late Ordovician and Late Carboniferous where this approach is revolutionizing our understanding of deep time glaciation. Although some problems cannot be overcome (erosion or dissolution of the evidence), robust interpretations in terms of the evolving subglacial environment can be made. Citing examples from Australia (Cryogenian), China (Ediacaran), North and South Africa (Late Ordovician, Late Carboniferous), and Namibia (Late Carboniferous), we illustrate how the power of glacial geomorphology can be harnessed to interpret Earth’s ancient glacial record.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the formation of the North Qilian Shan in the NE Tibetan Plateau provides insights into the growth mechanisms of the northern region of the plateau across time. Detrital zircon fission-track (ZFT) analyses of river sediments can provide a comprehensive understanding of the exhumation history during prolonged orogenesis. Here, we applied the detrital thermochronology approach to the Qilian Shan orogenic belt. This work presents the first single-grain detrital ZFT data from river-bed sediments of the upper Hei River catchment in North Qilian Shan. The single ZFT ages are widely distributed between about 1200 Ma and about 40 Ma. These data record the protracted history of the Qilian Shan region from the Neoproterozoic evolution of Rodinia and late Paleozoic amalgamation of Central Asia to the accretion of the Gondwanian blocks during the Meso-Cenozoic era. Strong post-magmatic cooling events occurred in North Qilian Shan at 1200~1000 Ma, corresponding to the assembly of the Rodinia supercontinent. The age population at 800 Ma documents the oceanic spreading in the late Neoproterozoic dismantling of Rodinia. ZFT ages ranging from about 750 Ma to 550 Ma (with age peaks at 723 Ma and 588 Ma) are consistent with the timing of the opening and spreading of the Qilian Ocean. The age peaks at 523 Ma and 450 Ma mark the progressive closure of that ocean ending with the collision of the Qilian block with the Alxa block—North China craton in the Devonian. The Qilian Ocean finally closed in Late Devonian (age peak at 375 Ma). In the late Paleozoic (275 Ma), the subduction of the Paleotethys Ocean led to extensive magmatic activity in the North Qilian Shan. During the Lower Cretaceous (145 Ma), the accretion of the Lhasa block to the south (and potentially the closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean to the northeast) triggered a renewed tectonic activity in the Qilian Shan. Finally, a poorly defined early Eocene exhumation event (50 Ma) suggests that the NE Tibetan Plateau started to deform nearly synchronously with the onset of the India-Asia collision. This study demonstrates the usefulness of combining modern-river detrital thermo-/geochronological ages and bedrock geochronological ages to understand large-scale orogenic evolution processes.

Abstract: The extremely thick sedimentary sequence in the Qaidam Basin, northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) is closely related to the uplift of the TP. Due to the scarcity of minerals that can be dated continuously, little is known about the isotopic responses of the minerals in this area to the changes in the weathering and sources over a long time period. A 938.5-m long core (magnetostratigraphic age of ∼ 2.8–0.1 Ma) was drilled in the western Qaidam Basin in 2008. The mineralogy and isotopic compositions of gypsum in this core were investigated. The gypsum recorded the primary information about the brine that formed during ∼ 2.8–0.1 Ma. The variations in the Sr isotopes (0.709817–0.714473, average of 0.711249) and Nd (0.512114–0.512614, average of 0.512184) of the gypsum samples suggest that the weathering products of the rocks in the Kunlun and Altyn mountains (Mts) likely exerted a strong control on the Sr-Nd isotopes of the lakes. The climate and the Sr content/isotopic compositions of the gypsum samples were affected by the regional tectonic activities throughout the evolution of the paleolake since 2.8 Ma. The results of this study demonstrate that Sr-Nd isotopes are useful tools for investigating the origins of evaporite deposits and the interactions between tectonic activities and climate change.

Abstract: International audience; The middle Rhône valley, located at the southeastern margins of the Massif Central in France, produced a large number of Middle Palaeolithic sites, most of which dated to the Middle and Late Pleistocene. Due to its position, connecting northern Europe and the Mediterranean basin, this corridor and the surrounding plateaus are of particular interest in the study of human cultural evolution, including the emergence of Middle Palaeolithic technology around 300,000 years ago and its variability over time, as well as the subsistence and mobility strategies of Neanderthals. In the last 20 years, several research projects undertaken in this region allowed to revise key Middle Palaeolithic sequences. This work aims at synthesising previous and new chronological data obtained by using uranium-series of speleothems and bones, infrared stimulated luminescence of feldspar and electron spin resonance of tooth enamel and quartz. We review previous ages obtained in the area and present 43 new ages that are discussed together to propose a reliable spatiotemporal framework for Neanderthal occupations. We focus on major sites in the region: Payre, Ranc-Pointu 2, Baume Flandin, Abri du Maras, Grotte des Barasses II, Abri des Pêcheurs, Grotte du Figuier and Grotte de Saint-Marcel. They all provided significant information related to the biological and behavioural evolution of Neanderthal populations on the right bank of the Rhône valley. We present here the updated chronology for the Middle Palaeolithic of this area, ranging from ca. 300,000 to 40,000 years ago.
