The use of aluminum-rich clays and bauxites as refractory materials is common. Upon firing, these materials form mullite crystals in the shape of needles embedded in a siliceous and vitreous matrix, with mullite being responsible for the refractory properties. In this study, bauxite samples for use in refractory applications have been characterized. Chemical analysis revealed that the alumina content varied between 34 and 40%, with silica values generally being high (around 40%), except for one sample (26%). Two samples were found to be the most suitable for use as “refractory clay” refractories. However, high silica or Fe oxide contents can affect mineralogical transformations at high temperatures. Mineralogical analysis confirmed the presence of several minerals in the bauxite materials, including kaolinite, halloysite, anatase, rutile, gibbsite and boehmite. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) showed the decomposition of gibbsite and its partial transformation to boehmite and alumina, and the dehydroxylation of kaolinite, with primary mullite crystallization observed at a high temperature. These findings provide valuable information for the selection and optimization of bauxite materials for refractory applications, considering their chemical composition and mineralogical characteristics.

The Mabujina Complex exposed in south-central Cuba consists of an elongated body of metamorphosed volcanic and subvolcanic mafic rocks and tonalitic gneisses. The complex is largely composed of greenschist facies rocks (Porvenir Formation) directly below the Cretaceous volcanic arc section and of a deeper sequence of deformed amphibolite facies rocks (Mabujina Amphibolite Complex). The origin of the protolith of the Mabujina Complex has been the subject of intense debate in the past. While some authors consider the Mabujina Complex to represent the deepest and oldest (Early Cretaceous) exposed section (root) of the Cretaceous Caribbean volcanic arc others suggested an exotic (non-Caribbean related) Early Cretaceous volcanic arc section. The later proposal implies the tectonic emplacement underneath the Caribbean arc of a segment of the Pacific-related Early Cretaceous Mexican Guerrero volcanic arc terrane. A new set of whole-rock geochemical analyses presented in this study shows that the protoliths of the Mabujina Amphibolite Complex constitute an island-arc sequence with a) less abundant island-arc tholeiitic mafic rocks similar to the Early Cretaceous tholeiitic island arc of the Caribbean and b) dominant transitional to calc-alkaline mafic and felsic igneous rocks that resemble the Early to Late Cretaceous magmatism of the Caribbean arc. The high initial Nd ratios of the rocks from the Mabujina Amphibolite Complex are indistinguishable from the tholeiitic to calc-alkaline sequences from the Caribbean arc, reflecting a depleted MORB mantle source with limited subduction-related component input. The present data, together with published geochemical and geochronological data of the protoliths, allow identifying a Caribbean origin for the Mabujina Complex instead of an exotic provenance in the Guerrero Arc of western Mexico. The sedimentary successions of the Permian-Triassic rifting related to the Alpine Tethys in the easternmost Lower Alpujarride units (Internal Betic Zone, south Spain) host shallow-intrusive basic bodies of Mesozoic age. These gabbroic bodies experienced low-grade Alpine metamorphic overprint, singularly recorded in three outcrops nearby Alicante city in southeast Spain: Callosa and Orihuela Ranges and Nueva Tabarca Island. Overall, the metabasic bodies still preserve magmatic ophitic/subophitic texture and relicts of magmatic augite and ferropargasite-ferroedenite-edenite and kaersutite. In contrast, metamorphic minerals include magnesioriebeckite, actinolite, albite, stilpnomelane, phengite, and chlorite. Major and trace element geochemical data suggest crystallization of the igneous protoliths from subalkaline (tholeiitic) to alkaline within-plate (continental) basaltic magmas slightly enriched in incompatible elements. These magmas with E-MORB geochemical affinity very likely intruded at shallow crustal levels in an extensional-synrift-geodynamic setting related to the breakoff of Pangea in the region. Pressure-Temperature (P-T) conditions estimated by average P-T method and pseudosection calculations suggest metamorphic peak at ca. 6 kbar at 340°C consistent with burial metamorphism down to ca. 18 km depth with intermediate thermal gradients of ca. 18°C/km. These conditions are different to the typical subduction-related blueschist facies conditions of the Lower Alpujarride units and suggest, instead, a collisional (Barrovian) event. This can be explained by a late-stage accretion of the studied units after the main subduction-related event, pointing to the dispersion of the corresponding Lower Alpujarride sections along the margin in different palaeogeographic positions before deformation and movement to their actual structural position. The rationale behind constructing this new database is to create a comprehensive catalogue including all known or identified collapse calderas. The availability of accurate and comprehensive statistics is vital to understand these volcanic structures . Thus, this extensive data compilation should be an accessible and useful tool for studying and understanding caldera collapse processes . The final aim of the CCDB is to update the current field based knowledge on calderas, by merging together the abovementioned databases and complementing them with the existing peer-reviewed articles on calderas. This database does not include all the calderas of the world but tries to be representative. The current files is the latest update corresponding to papers published up to 2019.

The Mi-1 gene in tomato confers resistance against insects and nematodes. The mechanisms involved in the functioning of this gene are not completely known, and they differ depending on the damaging organism (insect or nematode). Transcription factors (TF) from different families are essential for plant defence, and the TGAs, members of the Basic Leucine Zipper (bZIP) TF family, are relevant in different pathosystems. In this work, the implication of TGA 1a and TGA 2.1 genes in Mi-1 resistance against the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica was studied, by virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) based on Tobacco rattle virus (TRV). Results showed that infiltration with the empty TRV vector did not alter Mi-1-mediated resistance, confirming the adequacy of this method. Silencing of the TGA 1a gene resulted in a decrease in resistance to M. javanica, as the numbers of egg masses were significantly higher than those on non-silenced plants. This decrease in resistance was similar to that caused by silencing the Mi-1 gene. However, the silencing of the TGA 2.1 gene caused a limited loss of resistance, with infestation levels intermediate between those of resistant and susceptible varieties. Thus, our results demonstrate the requirement of TGA 1a in Mi-1-mediated resistance to M. javanica, while the incomplete silencing of TGA 2.1 impaired a specific determination of its role.

The commercial development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been significantly delayed by the constraint of performing time-consuming degradation studies under real outdoor conditions. These are necessary steps to determine the device lifetime, an area where PSCs traditionally suffer. In this work, we demonstrate that the outdoor degradation behavior of PSCs can be predicted by employing accelerated indoor stability analyses. The prediction was possible using a swift and accurate pipeline of machine learning algorithms and mathematical decompositions. By training the algorithms with different indoor stability data sets, we can determine the most relevant stress factors, thereby shedding light on the outdoor degradation pathways. Our methodology is not specific to PSCs and can be extended to other PV technologies where degradation and its mechanisms are crucial elements of their widespread adoption.

In the Anthropocene, many species are rapidly shifting their ranges in response to human-driven habitat modifications. Studying patterns and genetic signatures of range shifts helps to understand how species cope with environmental disturbances and predict future shifts in the face of global environmental change. We investigated the genetic signature of a contemporary wide-range expansion observed in the Iberian common vole Microtus arvalis asturianus shortly after a colonization event. We used mtDNA and microsatellite data to investigate patterns of genetic diversity, structure, demography, and gene flow across 57 localities covering the historical range of the species and the newly colonized area. The results showed a genetic footprint more compatible with a true range expansion (i.e. the colonization of previously unoccupied areas), than with a model of “colonization from within” (i.e. local expansions from small, unnoticed populations). Genetic diversity measures indicated that the source population was likely located at the NE of the historical range, with a declining gradient of genetic diversity towards the more recently invaded areas. At the expansion front, we observed the greatest gene flow and smallest pairwise differences between nearby localities. Both natural landscape features (rivers) and recent anthropogenic barriers (roads, railways) explained a large proportion of genetic variance among populations and had a significant impact on the colonization pathways used by voles.

Based on published works and unpublished materials, this article analyses how cybernetics was received by two Spanish thinkers exiled in Mexico: José Gaos (1900–1969) and Eduardo Nicol (1907–1990). This reception is particularly intriguing especially when considering the substantial presence and social impact that Norbert Wiener had in Mexican society because of his friendship with Arturo Rosenblueth. Gaos and Nicol are the first philosophers to develop a complex and original diagnosis of cybernetics in Mexico. It will be shown how the exiled thinkers take on the philosophical implications of this science in the light of their respective theoretical projects, and finally, it will be defended how the critical perspective they develop is particularly significant for Mexico’s political and academic context since it illuminates some negative aspects of cybernetics that Wiener did not foresee and that had not been reported there until then.

The use of resinous substances, certainly one of the earliest technologies developed by humans, was well-known by Holocene hunter-gatherers at the onset of the Neolithisation process across Europe. Recent research has revealed the use of birch bark tar in the central Mediterranean far from this taxon's endemic regions both in the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods and shows that the first farmers from the Fertile Crescent hafted lithic tools and waterproofed artefacts using bitumen. The generalised absence of these natural products in south-western Europe may have thus forced a reformulation of Early Neolithic technologies by exploring and benefitting from existing knowledge in local European hunter-gatherer societies. However, information on resin use from the western Mediterranean is still scarce. Here, we report on the analysis of organic residues from 168 pottery sherds by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry from 10 archaeological sites in this region dating from the second half of the VI millennium to the first half of the V millennium cal BC. In a limited number of samples, minor amounts of several diterpenoids diagnostic of aged Pinaceae resins were detected as mixtures with fats. The presence of pine in the palynological and carpological record supports the human exploitation of this taxon, but its minimal incidence in the anthracological record suggests that other species were selected as fuelwood. This supports the hypothesis that Pinaceae resins were used in association with pottery sporadically but ubiquitously either as its contents, or as post-firing treatments to waterproof the vessels. This demonstrates the development of adhesive technologies and resin-involved labour processes specific to Early Neolithic societies.

Reproductive fitness of rams is seasonal, showing the highest libido during short days coinciding with the ovarian cyclicity resumption in the ewe. However, the remarkable variation in sexual behavior between rams impair farm efficiency and profitability. Intending to identify in vivo sexual behavior biomarkers that may aid farmers to select active rams, transcriptome profiling of blood was carried out by analyzing samples from 6 sexually active (A) and 6 nonactive (NA) Rasa Aragonesa rams using RNA-Seq technique. A total of 14,078 genes were expressed in blood but only four genes were differentially expressed (FDR < 0.10) in the A vs. NA rams comparison. The genes, acrosin inhibitor 1 (ENSOARG00020023278) and SORCS2, were upregulated (log2FC > 1) in active rams, whereas the CRYL1 and immunoglobulin lambda-1 light chain isoform X47 (ENSOARG00020025518) genes were downregulated (log2FC < -1) in this same group. Gene set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) identified 428 signaling pathways, predominantly related to biological processes. The lysosome pathway (GO:0005764) was the most enriched, and may affect fertility and sexual behavior, given the crucial role played by lysosomes in steroidogenesis, being the SORCS2 gene related to this signaling pathway. Furthermore, the enriched positive regulation of ERK1 and ERK2 cascade (GO:0070374) pathway is associated with reproductive phenotypes such as fertility via modulation of hypothalamic regulation and GnRH-mediated production of pituitary gonadotropins. Furthermore, external side of plasma membrane (GO:0009897), fibrillar center (GO:0001650), focal adhesion (GO:0005925), and lamellipodium (GO:0030027) pathways were also enriched, suggesting that some molecules of these pathways might also be involved in rams' sexual behavior. These results provide new clues for understanding the molecular regulation of sexual behavior in rams. Eudendrium capillaroides Schuchert, 2008 has not been reported since its original description. The new and abundant material found in Ceuta, southern coast of the Strait of Gibraltar, allows us to refine the morphological diagnosis of this species. Eudendrium capillaroides is characterized by small monosiphonic colonies, a dense ring at the base of the hydranth, and it seems to have a preference for growing on other hydroids. Male gonophores on atrophied polyps, two-chambered (occasionally one chamber), and female gonophores on reduced polyps in the initial stages of development but hydrants later completely atrophied. Nematocysts are heterotrichous microbasic euryteles of two size classes, a larger size densely distributed in a band on the hydrant body basally and a smaller size abundant mainly on the tentacles. Furthermore, we carried out molecular analyses to assess the status of E. capillaroides and its most similar congener E. capillare within the genus Eudendrium. The use of few morphological characters or incomplete descriptions may thus lead to an incorrect wide distribution of a nominal species that actually represents a species complex. This can particularly be the case in less conspicuous species, such as many hydroids, where the degree of diversity might be underestimated. The accurate description of tiny, inconspicuous and/or cryptic species is important in order to better estimate global marine diversity as well as to understand marine communities and the relationships between their components.

The genus Karyolysus was originally proposed to accommodate blood parasites of lacertid lizards in Western Europe. However, recent phylogenetic analyses suggested an inconclusive taxonomic position of these parasites of the order Adeleorina based on the available genetic information. Inconsistencies between molecular phylogeny, morphology, and/or life cycles can reflect lack of enough genetic informa- tion of the target group. We therefore surveyed 28 localities and collected blood samples from 828 lizards of 23 species including lacertids, skinks, and geckoes in the western Mediterranean, North Africa, and Macaronesia, where species of Karyolysus and other adeleorine parasites have been described. We com- bined molecular and microscopic methods to analyze the samples, including those from the host type species and the type locality of Karyolysus bicapsulatus. The phylogenetic relationship of these parasites was analyzed based on the 18S rRNA gene and the co-phylogenetic relationship with their vertebrate hosts was reconstructed. We molecularly detected adeleorine parasites in 37.9% of the blood samples and found 22 new parasite haplotypes. A phylogenetic reconstruction with 132 sequences indicated that 20 of the newly detected haplotypes clustered in a well-supported clade with another 18 sequences that included Karyolysus galloti and Karyolysus lacazei. Morphological evidence also supported that K. bicapsu- latus clustered in this monophyletic clade. These results supported the taxonomic validity of the genus. In addition, we found some parasite haplotypes that infected different lizard host genera with ancient diverging histories, which suggested that Karyolysus is less host-specific than other blood parasites of lizards in the region. A co-phylogenetic analysis supported this interpretation because no significant co-speciation signal was shown between Karyolysus and lizard hosts.

The Mi-1 gene of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) confers resistance against some nematodes and insects, but the resistance mechanisms differ depending on the harmful organism, as a hypersensitive reaction (HR) occurs only in the case of nematodes. The gene Rme1 is required for Mi-1-mediated resistance to nematodes, aphids, and whiteflies, and several additional proteins also play a role in this resistance. Among them, the involvement of the chaperone HSP90 has been demonstrated in Mi-1-mediated resistance for aphids and nematodes, but not for whiteflies. In this work, we studied the implication of the Hsp90 gene in the Mi-1 resistance against the whitefly Bemisia tabaci by means of Tobacco rattle virus (TRV)-based virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS). The silencing of the Hsp90 gene in tomato Motelle plants carrying the Mi-1 gene resulted in a decrease in resistance to whiteflies, as oviposition values were significantly higher than those on non-silenced plants. This decrease in resistance was equivalent to that caused by the silencing of the Mi-1 gene itself. Infiltration with the control TRV vector did not alter Mi-1 mediated resistance to B. tabaci. Similar to the Mi-1 gene, silencing of Hsp90-1 occurs partially, as silenced plants showed a significant but not complete suppression of gene expression. Thus, our results demonstrate the requirement of Hsp90 in the Mi-1-mediated resistance to B. tabaci and reinforce the hypothesis of a common model for this resistance to nematodes and insects.

Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events are interesting from a scientific perspective as they are the product of a broad set of physical processes from the corona out through the extent of the heliosphere, and provide insight into processes of particle acceleration and transport that are widely applicable in astrophysics. From the operations perspective, SEP events pose a radiation hazard for aviation, electronics in space, and human space exploration, in particular for missions outside of the Earth’s protective magnetosphere including to the Moon and Mars. Thus, it is critical to improve the scientific understanding of SEP events and use this understanding to develop and improve SEP forecasting capabilities to support operations. Many SEP models exist or are in development using a wide variety of approaches and with differing goals. These include computationally intensive physics-based models, fast and light empirical models, machine learning-based models, and mixed-model approaches. The aim of this paper is to summarize all of the SEP models currently developed in the scientific community, including a description of model approach, inputs and outputs, free parameters, and any published validations or comparisons with data.

Genetic variants in chromatin regulators are frequently found in neurodevelopmental disorders, but their effect in disease etiology is rarely determined. Here, we uncover and functionally define pathogenic variants in the chromatin modifier EZH1 as the cause of dominant and recessive neurodevelopmental disorders in 19 individuals. EZH1 encodes one of the two alternative histone H3 lysine 27 methyltransferases of the PRC2 complex. Unlike the other PRC2 subunits, which are involved in cancers and developmental syndromes, the implication of EZH1 in human development and disease is largely unknown. Using cellular and biochemical studies, we demonstrate that recessive variants impair EZH1 expression causing loss of function effects, while dominant variants are missense mutations that affect evolutionarily conserved aminoacids, likely impacting EZH1 structure or function. Accordingly, we found increased methyltransferase activity leading to gain of function of two EZH1 missense variants. Furthermore, we show that EZH1 is necessary and sufficient for differentiation of neural progenitor cells in the developing chick embryo neural tube. Finally, using human pluripotent stem cell-derived neural cultures and forebrain organoids, we demonstrate that EZH1 variants perturb cortical neuron differentiation. Overall, our work reveals a critical role of EZH1 in neurogenesis regulation and provides molecular diagnosis for previously undefined neurodevelopmental disorders.

Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is responsible for the intravascular catabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and plays a central role in whole-body energy balance and lipid homeostasis. As such, LPL is subject to tissue-specific regulation in different physiological conditions, but the mechanisms of this regulation remain incompletely characterized. Previous work revealed that LPL comprises a set of proteoforms with different isoelectric points, but their regulation and functional significance have not been studied thus far. Here we studied the distribution of LPL proteoforms in different rat tissues and their regulation under physiological conditions. First, analysis by two-dimensional electrophoresis and Western blot showed different patterns of LPL proteoforms (i.e., different pI or relative abundance of LPL proteoforms) in different rat tissues under basal conditions, which could be related to the tissue-specific regulation of the enzyme. Next, the comparison of LPL proteoforms from heart and brown adipose tissue between adults and 15-day-old rat pups, two conditions with minimal regulation of LPL in these tissues, yielded virtually the same tissue-specific patterns of LPL proteoforms. In contrast, the pronounced downregulation of LPL activity observed in white adipose tissue during fasting is accompanied by a prominent reconfiguration of the LPL proteoform pattern. Furthermore, refeeding reverts this downregulation of LPL activity and restores the pattern of LPL proteoforms in this tissue. Importantly, this reversible proteoform-specific regulation during fasting and refeeding indicates that LPL proteoforms are functionally diverse. Further investigation of potential differences in the functional properties of LPL proteoforms showed that all proteoforms exhibit lipolytic activity and have similar heparin-binding affinity, although other functional aspects remain to be investigated. Drug–drug salts are a kind of pharmaceutical multicomponent solid in which the two co-existing components are active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in their ionized forms. This novel approach has attracted great interest in the pharmaceutical industry since it not only allows concomitant formulations but also has proved potential to improve the pharmacokinetics of the involved APIs. This is especially interesting for those APIs that have relevant dose-dependent secondary effects, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In this work, six multidrug salts involving six different NSAIDs and the antibiotic ciprofloxacin are reported. The novel solids were synthesized using mechanochemical methods and comprehensively characterized in the solid state. Moreover, solubility and stability studies, as well as bacterial inhibition assays, were performed. Our results suggest that our drug–drug formulations enhanced the solubility of NSAIDs without affecting the antibiotic efficacy.

VSe2 is a layered compound that has attracted great attention due to its proximity to a ferromagnetic state that is quenched by its charge density wave (CDW) phase. In the monolayer limit, unrelated experiments have reported different CDW orders with different transition temperatures, making this monolayer very controversial. Here we perform first-principles nonperturbative anharmonic phonon calculations in monolayer VSe2 in order to estimate the CDW order and the corresponding transition temperature. They reveal that monolayer VSe2 develops two independent charge density wave orders that compete as a function of strain. Variations of only 1.5% in the lattice parameter are enough to stabilize one order or the other. Moreover, we analyze the impact of external Lennard-Jones interactions, showing that these can act together with anharmonicity to suppress the CDW orders. Our results solve previous experimental contradictions, highlighting the high tunability and substrate dependency of the CDW orders of monolayer VSe2.

[EN] A monthly gridded precipitation data set over peninsular Spain between December 1945 and December 2005 has been created. The dataset was developed from surface observations from the National Climatic Data Bank (BNDC) of the Spanish National Meteorological and Meteorological Service (AEMET). A total of 6821 data series with more than 10 years of records were used, providing a total of 2670 complete and homogeneous series. Station data were interpolated on a regular 0.1° × 0.1° grid using the angular distance weighting (ADW) method., [ES] Un conjunto de datos mensuales de precipitación en cuadrícula sobre la España peninsular entre diciembre de 1945 y diciembre de 2005 ha sido creado. El conjunto de datos se desarrolló a partir de observaciones en superficie del Banco Nacional de Datos Climáticos (BNDC) del Servicio Nacional de Meteorología y Meteorología de España (AEMET). Se utilizaron 6821 series de datos con más de 10 años de registros, proporcionando un total de 2670 series completas y homogéneas. Los datos de las estaciones se interpolaron en una cuadrícula regular de 0,1° × 0,1° utilizando el método de ponderación de distancia angular (ADW).

Rhyacian basement is not exposed in the western part of the Río de la Plata craton, but deep borehole samples (depth of 1046–3340 m) provide information on its composition and metamorphic evolution. An amphibole schist sample from the Camilo Aldao borehole underwent two metamorphic stages: M1 and M2. The P-T conditions of M1 are not constrained whereas the M2 main metamorphic stage is characterized by conditions of 6.1–7.4 kbar and 575–605 °C. In contrast, an olivine gabbronorite sample from the Santiago Temple borehole records crystallization conditions of 1.7 ± 0.6 kbar and 1180 ± 10 °C based on clinopyroxene composition, and late magmatic to subsolidus low-pressure granulite facies metamorphism at 2.3 ± 1.2 kbar and 749 ± 85 °C based on multi-equilibrium thermobarometry. The Rhyacian evolution of the Río de la Plata craton is characterized by at least three thermo-tectonic orogenic stages: T1 (ca. 2200–2100 Ma), T2 (ca. 2100–2040 Ma), and T3 (ca. 2040–2010 Ma) that correspond respectively to: 1) early oceanic subduction and juvenile continental arc magmatism; 2) subsequent continental collision (clockwise intermediate P/T paths of metamorphism), and 3) final low-pressure metamorphism coeval with post-orogenic magmatism. The Camilo Aldao amphibole schist is representative of the T2 orogenic stage while the Santiago Temple gabbronorite is representative of T3 magmatism and metamorphism.

In this paper, specimens belonging to the pycnogonid genus Colossendeis Jarzynsky, 1870 collected during the Antarctic Polarstern XXIII/8 cruise (November 23, 2006, to January 30, 2007) were studied. In this collection, the following thirteen species have been identified, two of them being proposed as new species: Colossendeis frigida Hodgson, 1907, C. megalonyx Hoek, 1881, C. wilsoni Calman, 1915, C. engirmatica Turpaeva, 1974, C. arundorostris Fry & Hedgpeth, 1969, C. scotti Calman, 1915, C. lilliei Calman, 1915, C. drakei Calman, 1915, C. glacialis Hodgson, 1907, C. australis Hodgson, 1907, C. tortipalpis Gordon, 1932, C. pseudofrigida sp. nov., and C. bamberi sp. nov. All species are diagnosed and their taxonomic status discussed. C. frigida, C. engirmatica, and C. arundorostris extend their known depth range. C. arundorostris has been found for the first time outside the Ross Sea. The finding of C. engirmatica represents the first record after its original description. The new species are described, illustrated, and compared with their closest congeners. Finally, we carried out a cluster analysis (Bray-Curtis similarity index) based on a data-matrix of 49 Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic Colossendeis species and 26 morphological characters.

Parabens and bisphenol A are synthetic compounds found in many everyday objects, including bottles, food containers, personal care products, cosmetics and medicines. These substances may penetrate the environment and living organisms, on which they have a negative impact. Till now, numerous studies have described parabens and BPA in humans, but knowledge about terrestrial wild mammals’ exposure to these compounds is very limited. Therefore, during this study, the most common concentration levels of BPA and parabens were selected (such as methyl paraben—MeP, ethyl paraben—EtP, propyl paraben—PrP and butyl paraben—BuP) and analyzed in guano samples collected in summer (nursery) colonies of greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis) using liquid chromatography with the tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) method. MeP has been found in all guano samples and its median concentration levels amounted to 39.6 ng/g. Other parabens were present in smaller number of samples (from 5% for BuP to 62.5% for EtP) and in lower concentrations. Median concentration levels of these substances achieved 0.95 ng/g, 1.45 ng/g and 15.56 ng/g for EtP, PrP and BuP, respectively. BPA concentration levels did not exceed the method quantification limit (5 ng/g dw) in any sample. The present study has shown that wild bats are exposed to parabens and BPA, and guano samples are a suitable matrix for studies on wild animal exposure to these substances.

Eudendrium capillaroides Schuchert, 2008 has not been reported since its original description. The new and abundant material found in Ceuta, southern coast of the Strait of Gibraltar, allows us to refine the morphological diagnosis of this species. Eudendrium capillaroides is characterized by small monosiphonic colonies, a dense ring at the base of the hydranth, and it seems to have a preference for growing on other hydroids. Male gonophores on atrophied polyps, two-chambered (occasionally one chamber), and female gonophores on reduced polyps in the initial stages of development but hydrants later completely atrophied. Nematocysts are heterotrichous microbasic euryteles of two size classes, a larger size densely distributed in a band on the hydrant body basally and a smaller size abundant mainly on the tentacles. Furthermore, we carried out molecular analyses to assess the status of E. capillaroides and its most similar congener E. capillare within the genus Eudendrium. The use of few morphological characters or incomplete descriptions may thus lead to an incorrect wide distribution of a nominal species that actually represents a species complex. This can particularly be the case in less conspicuous species, such as many hydroids, where the degree of diversity might be underestimated. The accurate description of tiny, inconspicuous and/or cryptic species is important in order to better estimate global marine diversity as well as to understand marine communities and the relationships between their components.

The use of natural uranium and thorium long-lived isotopes was applied to study the evolution of kaolinitic materials. To do that, a radiochemical method for separation of Th and U in phyllosilicate samples was developed with the main aim of their analysis by ICP-MS/MS. Given the lack of certified phyllosilicate reference materials with certified isotope abundances, the method was tested using a stepwise approach. First, a preliminary setup was done using a sediment reference sample. Then, the extrapolation of this method to the samples of interest has been tested using a phyllosilicate sample certified for U and Th concentrations. The results showed that an extension of the plateau time of digestion in the used microwave system was peremptory as to get full digestion of the sample. The use of the isotope dilution technique allowed both the quantification of major isotopes (²³⁸U and ²³²Th) simultaneous to the determination of isotope ratios (²³⁴U/238U, ²³⁵U/²³⁸U for quality control and ²³⁰Th/²³²Th). The established method was applied to six kaolinitic samples from the Iberian Range (NE Spain), showing the potential of this isotope approach for the characterization of their time evolution.

La falta de homogeneidad en el producto dificulta la gestión de los procesos de las empresas y cadenas de suministro en el momento en el que los clientes requieren homogeneidad entre las unidades de producto que adquieren. Un ejemplo de esto se produce en el sector de la cerámica, en el que los clientes requieren que todas las unidades que van a ser ensambladas juntas tengan el mismo color, espesor y calidad por razones estéticas y de seguridad. Otro ejemplo es el extraído del sector agroalimentario, en el que el mercado final requiere productos que cumplan con un tamaño mínimo, un color particular, o sabor en el caso de las frutas. Además, el sector agroalimentario tiene la complejidad añadida producida por el deterioro de los productos a lo largo del tiempo, y la necesidad de los mercados de ofrecer a los clientes productos con una mínima duración tras su venta. En esta Tesis, se define como productos heterogéneos a aquellos productos que se pueden clasificar en subtipos homogéneos con una cantidad variable, mientras que los productos perecederos son aquellos que, además de ser heterogéneos, tienen falta de homogeneidad en su estado. There are four aspects that characterize the lack of homogeneity in the product: the homogeneous subtypes to be obtained from a production lot, the quantity of products that belong to each subtype, the value related to each of the subtypes and the state of the products. The lack of homogeneity in the product hinders the management of the supply chain or company's processes at the time customers require the homogeneity among the acquired units of product. An example of this is produced in the ceramic tile sector, in which customers need all acquired ceramic tiles that are going to be jointly assembled to have the same colour, thickness and quality for aesthetic and safety reasons. Another example is the extracted from the agri-food sector, in which final markets require products that meet some characteristics such as a minimum size, a particular colour or flavour in the case of fruits. In addition, the agri-food sector has the added complexity produced by the deterioration of products over time, and the need of markets to offer to end consumers products with a minimum durability after sale. In this Thesis, heterogeneous products are defined as products for which different subtypes can be obtained in a variable quantity while perishable products are those that, apart from being heterogeneous, have a lack of homogeneity in their state. According to these concepts, ceramic sectors would commercialize heterogeneous products while the agri-food sector would do so with perishable products. This Thesis proposes conceptual frameworks and Operations Research models to support the management of supply chains with heterogeneous and perishable products in centralized and distributed decision-mak

Soil contamination with petroleum-derived substances such as diesel fuel has become a major environmental threat. Phytoremediation is one of the most studied ecofriendly low-cost solutions nowadays and halophytes species has been proved to have potential as bio-tools for this purpose. The extent to which salinity influences diesel tolerance in halophytes requires investigation. A greenhouse experiment was designed to assess the effect of NaCl supply (0 and 85 mM NaCl) on the growth and photosynthetic physiology of Juncus acutus plants exposed to 0, 1 and 2.5% diesel fuel. Relative growth rate, water content and chlorophyll a derived parameters were measured in plants exposed to the different NaCl and diesel fuel combinations. Our results indicated that NaCl supplementation worsened the effects of diesel toxicity on growth, as diesel fuel at 2.5% reduced relative growth rate by 25% in the absence of NaCl but 80% in plants treated with NaCl. Nevertheless, this species grown at 0 mM NaCl showed a high tolerance to diesel fuel soil presence in RGR but also in chlorophyll fluorescence parameters that did not significantly decrease at 1% diesel fuel concentration in absence of NaCl. Therefore, this study remarked on the importance of knowing the tolerance threshold to abiotic factors in order to determine the bioremediation capacity of a species for a specific soil or area. In addition, it showed that NaCl presence even in halophytes does not always have a positive effect on plant physiology and it depends on the pollutant nature.

Searching and displaying data based on user queries is a pervasive feature of most software applications such as information systems, web portals, and web APIs. The large volume of data managed by these types of systems, henceforth called query-based systems (QBSs), makes them extremely hard to test due to the difficulty to assess whether the output of a query is correct, the so-called test oracle problem. Metamorphic testing has proved to be a very effec tive approach to alleviate the oracle problem in QBSs, by exploiting the relations among multiple executions of the QBS under test, so called metamorphic relations (MRs). However, the identification of MRs mostly remains a manual and creative task, limiting the appli cability of the approach. In this paper, we propose a method for the automated generation of MRs in QBSs starting from a lightweight specification of the query parameters of the system. Evaluation results show that hundreds of MRs can be automatically identified in real-world systems like IMDb, SkyScanner, or YouTube in just a few seconds

Chalcopyrite-structured semiconductors have promising potential as low-cost thermoelectric materials, but their thermoelectric figures of merit must be increased for practical applications. Understanding their thermal properties is important for engineering their thermal conductivities and achieving better thermoelectric behavior. We present here a theoretical investigation of the lattice thermal conductivities of 20 chalcopyrite semiconductors with an ABX2composition (I-III-VI2) (A = Cu or Ag; B = Al, Ga, In, or Tl; X = S, Se, or Te). To afford accurate predictions across this large family of compounds, we solve the Boltzmann transport equation with force constants derived from density functional theory calculations and machine learning-based regression algorithms, reducing by between 1 and 2 orders of magnitude the computational cost with respect to conventional approaches of the same accuracy. The results are in good agreement with available experimental data and allow us to rationalize the role of chemical composition, temperature, and nanostructuring in the thermal conductivities across this important family of semiconductors.

[EN]: Background. The complexity in the development of an eating disorder (ED) pose methodological challenges when addressing risk factors of this pathology. Pike et al. (2008) proposed to use a case-control design for this type of research. The eating disorders’ risk factor study (ANOBAS) is a case-control study with three control groups aiming to evaluate several variables related to the onset of ED, thus the aim was to illustrate a new methodology proposal and to assess whether the chosen control groups are appropriate to research correlates on ED. Methods. We used a case-control design of 50 female adolescents with ED at onset matched by age and their parents’ socioeconomic status with 40 patients with an affective disorder, 40 patients with asthma pathology and 50 without pathology. Diagnoses were completed with K-SADS interview and an evaluation of biological, psychological, environmental and family correlates. Results. Higher similarities were found between the ED group and the affective disorder group across psychological variables, whereas the similarities between the ED group and the asthma group were found at the familial level, as we expected. The biggest differences were found with the non-pathology group. Conclusions. This rigorous research design allows investigating correlates associated specifically to the onset of an ED and the chosen control groups are suitable to investigate it., [ES]: Introducción. La complejidad asociada al desarrollo de los trastornos alimentarios (TCA) supone un reto metodológico en la investigación sobre los factores de riesgo implicados en el trastorno, siendo el diseño caso-control el adecuado para investigarlos. El Estudio de Factores de Riesgo de los TCA (ANOBAS) es un estudio caso-control con tres grupos de control que tiene el objetivo de evaluar distintos correlatos relacionados con el inicio de un TCA. El objetivo de este estudio es mostrar una nueva propuesta metodológica de evaluación y comprobar si los grupos de control son adecuados para estudiar cuáles son los correlatos específicos. Metodología. Se usó un estudio caso-control con 50 adolescentes con TCA al inicio de la patología, emparejadas por edad y estatus socioeconómico de los padres con 40 adolescentes con trastorno afectivo al inicio, 40 adolescentes con patología asmática y 50 adolescentes sin patología. El diagnóstico se realizó a través de la entrevista K-SADS y se hizo una evaluación de los correlatos biológicos, psicológicos y familiares. Resultados. Como se esperaba, altas similitudes fueron encontradas entre el grupo TCA y el grupo con trastorno afectivo en los correlatos psicológicos, mientras que las similitudes entre el grupo TCA y el grupo con patología asmática fueron encontradas en el plano familiar. Las principales diferencias fueron encontradas con el grupo sin patología. Conclusiones. Esta rigurosa propuesta metodológica permite investigar qué correlatos se asocian específicamente al inicio de un TCA, siendo los grupos de control seleccionados adecuados para investigarlo.

The intrinsic alignment (IA) of galaxies is potentially a major limitation in deriving cosmological constraints from weak lensing surveys. In order to investigate this effect, we assign intrinsic shapes and orientations to galaxies in the light-cone output of the MICE simulation, spanning ∼5000deg2 and reaching redshift z=1.4. This assignment is based on a semianalytic IA model that uses photometric properties of galaxies as well as the spin and shape of their host halos. Advancing on previous work, we include more realistic distributions of galaxy shapes and a luminosity-dependent galaxy-halo alignment. The IA model parameters are calibrated against COSMOS and BOSS LOWZ observations. The null detection of IA in observations of blue galaxies is accounted for by setting random orientations for these objects. We compare the two-point alignment statistics measured in the simulation against predictions from the analytical IA models NLA and TATT over a wide range of scales, redshifts, and luminosities for red and blue galaxies separately. We find that both models fit the measurements well at scales above 8 h−1Mpc, while TATT outperforms NLA at smaller scales. The IA parameters derived from our fits are in broad agreement with various observational constraints from red galaxies. Lastly, we build a realistic source sample, mimicking DES Year 3 observations and use it to predict the IA contamination to the observed shear statistics. We find this prediction to be within the measurement uncertainty, which might be a consequence of the random alignment of blue galaxies in the simulation.

Galaxy–galaxy lensing is a powerful probe of the connection between galaxies and their host dark matter haloes, which is important both for galaxy evolution and cosmology. We extend the measurement and modelling of the galaxy–galaxy lensing signal in the recent Dark Energy Survey Year 3 cosmology analysis to the highly non-linear scales (∼100 kpc). This extension enables us to study the galaxy–halo connection via a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) framework for the two lens samples used in the cosmology analysis: a luminous red galaxy sample (REDMAGIC) and a magnitude-limited galaxy sample (MAGLIM). We find that REDMAGIC (MAGLIM) galaxies typically live in dark matter haloes of mass log10(Mh/M⊙) ≈ 13.7 which is roughly constant over redshift (13.3−13.5 depending on redshift). We constrain these masses to ∼15 per cent ⁠, approximately 1.5 times improvement over the previous work. We also constrain the linear galaxy bias more than five times better than what is inferred by the cosmological scales only. We find the satellite fraction for REDMAGIC (MAGLIM) to be ∼0.1−0.2 (0.1−0.3) with no clear trend in redshift. Our constraints on these halo properties are broadly consistent with other available estimates from previous work, large-scale constraints, and simulations. The framework built in this paper will be used for future HOD studies with other galaxy samples and extensions for cosmological analyses.

For understanding the molecular events underlying the follicular (F) and luteal (L) phases of estrous cycle, and anestrous (A) phase, the pars tuberalis (PT), and hypothalamus (HT) transcriptomes of 21 ewes were studied. In HT, 72 and 3 differential expression genes (DEGs) were found when comparing F vs. A and L vs. A, respectively. In PT, 6 and 4 DEGs were found in F vs. A and L vs. A comparisons, respectively. Enrichment analysis for DEGs between the F and A phases in the HT revealed significant clusters, mainly associated with actin-binding, and cytoskeleton, that are related to neural plasticity modulated by gonadal steroid hormones, as well as with oxytocin signaling. We found that DEGs in PT had higher differences in expression levels than those found in HT. In this sense, the ITLN was highly upregulated in the F and L vs. A phases, being MRPL57 and IRX4 highly downregulated in L vs. A comparison. The DDC gene in PT, related to LH regulation, was upregulated in the F phase. The gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) revealed multiple pathways related to neurotransmission and neuronal plasticity. Our study reveals new candidate genes involved in the reproductive stages' transitions in seasonal sheep.

Strongly lensed quadruply imaged quasars (quads) are extraordinary objects. They are very rare in the sky and yet they provide unique information about a wide range of topics, including the expansion history and the composition of the Universe, the distribution of stars and dark matter in galaxies, the host galaxies of quasars, and the stellar initial mass function. Finding them in astronomical images is a classic ‘needle in a haystack’ problem, as they are outnumbered by other (contaminant) sources by many orders of magnitude. To solve this problem, we develop state-of-the-art deep learning methods and train them on realistic simulated quads based on real images of galaxies taken from the Dark Energy Survey, with realistic source and deflector models, including the chromatic effects of microlensing. The performance of the best methods on a mixture of simulated and real objects is excellent, yielding area under the receiver operating curve in the range of 0.86–0.89. Recall is close to 100 per cent down to total magnitude i ∼ 21 indicating high completeness, while precision declines from 85 per cent to 70 per cent in the range i ∼ 17–21. The methods are extremely fast: training on 2 million samples takes 20 h on a GPU machine, and 108 multiband cut-outs can be evaluated per GPU-hour. The speed and performance of the method pave the way to apply it to large samples of astronomical sources, bypassing the need for photometric pre-selection that is likely to be a major cause of incompleteness in current samples of known quads.

We are conducting a survey using twilight time on the Dark Energy Camera with the Blanco 4 m telescope in Chile to look for objects interior to Earth’s and Venus’ orbits. To date we have discovered two rare Atira/Apohele asteroids, 2021 LJ4 and 2021 PH27, which have orbits completely interior to Earth’s orbit. We also discovered one new Apollo-type Near Earth Object (NEO) that crosses Earth’s orbit, 2022 AP7. Two of the discoveries have diameters ≳1 km. 2022 AP7 is likely the largest Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) discovered in about eight years. To date we have covered 624 square degrees of sky near to and interior to the orbit of Venus. The average images go to 21.3 mag in the r band, with the best images near 22nd mag. Our new discovery 2021 PH27 has the smallest semimajor axis known for an asteroid, 0.4617 au, and the largest general relativistic effects (53 arcsec/century) known for any body in the solar system. The survey has detected ∼15% of all known Atira NEOs. We put strong constraints on any stable population of Venus co-orbital resonance objects existing, as well as the Atira and Vatira asteroid classes. These interior asteroid populations are important to complete the census of asteroids near Earth, including some of the most likely Earth impactors that cannot easily be discovered in other surveys. Comparing the actual population of asteroids found interior to Earth and Venus with those predicted to exist by extrapolating from the known population exterior to Earth is important to better understand the origin, composition, and structure of the NEO population.

The correct development and activity of neurons and glial cells is necessary to establish proper brain connectivity. DYRK1A encodes a protein kinase involved in the neuropathology associated with Down syndrome that influences neurogenesis and the morphological differentiation of neurons. DYRK1A loss-of-function mutations in heterozygosity cause a well-recognizable syndrome of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. In this study, we analysed the developmental trajectories of macroglial cells and the properties of the corpus callosum, the major white matter tract of the brain, in Dyrk1a+/− mice, a mouse model that recapitulates the main neurological features of DYRK1A syndrome. We found that Dyrk1a+/− haploinsufficient mutants present an increase in astrogliogenesis in the neocortex and a delay in the production of cortical oligodendrocyte progenitor cells and their progression along the oligodendroglial lineage. There were fewer myelinated axons in the corpus callosum of Dyrk1a+/− mice, axons that are thinner and with abnormal nodes of Ranvier. Moreover, action potential propagation along myelinated and unmyelinated callosal axons was slower in Dyrk1a+/− mutants. All these alterations are likely to affect neuronal circuit development and alter network synchronicity, influencing higher brain functions. These alterations highlight the relevance of glial cell abnormalities in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Abnormalities in myelination are associated to behavioral and cognitive dysfunction in neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders. Thus, therapies to promote or accelerate myelination could potentially ameliorate symptoms in autism. Clemastine, a histamine H1 antagonist with anticholinergic properties against muscarinic M1 receptor, is the most promising drug with promyelinating properties. Clemastine penetrates the blood brain barrier efficiently and promotes remyelination in different animal models of neurodegeneration including multiple sclerosis, ischemia and Alzheimer’s disease. However, its role in myelination during development is unknown. We showed that clemastine treatment during development increased oligodendrocyte differentiation in both white and gray matter. However, despite the increase in the number of oligodendrocytes, conduction velocity of myelinated fibers of corpus callosum decreased in clemastine treated mice. Confocal and electron microscopy showed a reduction in the number of myelinated axons and nodes of Ranvier and a reduction of myelin thickness in corpus callosum. To understand the mechanisms leading to myelin formation impairment in the presence of an excess of myelinating oligodendrocytes, we focused on microglial cells that also express muscarinic M1 receptors. Importantly, the population of CD11c+ microglia cells, necessary for myelination, as well as the levels of insulin growth factor-1 decrease in clemastine-treated mice. Altogether, these data suggest that clemastine impact on myelin development is more complex than previously thought and could be dependent on microglia-oligodendrocyte crosstalk. Further studies are needed to clarify the role of microglia cells on developmental myelination.

Research on Easter Island’s (or Rapa Nui’s) prehistory has mainly been approached from archeological and paleoecological perspectives. The reconstruction of changes in island society has been based largely on the evidence of anthropic activities found in archeological sites and on paleoenvironmental reconstructions. These reconstructions characterized the evolution of the island’s lakes and the changes in vegetation. Many studies address the date of the first human arrival and the origin of those colonizers, two issues that are still controversial. Another recurring theme has been the scientific effort to reconstruct the deforestation of the landscape focusing on the drastic deforestation during fourteenth fifteenth centuries. There are two groups of authors on this topic: those arguing that changes in Easter Island society and landscape were mainly the result of anthropogenic factors (Flenley and King 1984; Mieth and Bork 2005; Hunt and Lipo 2006; Wilmshurst et al. 2011; Stevenson et al. 2015, among others), and those that propose dynamic models combining both climate change and social drivers (Nunn 2007; Lima et al. 2020; Rull 2021).

Better knowledge of the evapotranspiration and carbon exchange of fruit trees is needed to optimize the trade-off between water use and carbon assimilation and to better understand the role of agriculture in the biogeochemical cycles. In this work, we measured water and carbon fluxes with eddy covariance and transpiration with sap flow in a drip-irrigated peach orchard of 70% ground cover located in southern Spain for 2 years. The empirically measured crop coefficient (Kc) under good watering conditions in the summer ranged from 1 to 1.1. The daytime net ecosystem exchange (NEE) flux of the orchard averaged 30 g CO2 m2 day−1 during the period of maximum activity in July. The daytime ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) of the orchard reached a minimum in late June, flattened around 4 g CO2 L−1 throughout the summer, and increased in autumn, but was unaffected by fruit removal or post-harvest irrigation reduction imposed by the farm (30% reduction). The response of instantaneous peach ecosystem WUE to VPD was also investigated. Both Kc, NEE, leaf water potential and stomatal conductance decreased sharply after harvest. Transpiration data from some purposely over-irrigated experimental trees demonstrated that the post-harvest alterations we found were not caused by fruit removal, but are result of mild water stress originated by the irrigation reduction. Hence, the often-observed alterations in water relations after harvest in well-watered trees were not observed in this experiment. This work adds insight on peach irrigation efficiency and on the contribution of orchards to agricultural carbon budgets.

[EN] Species response to land use can be examined under a functional perspective, where habitats are described according to species´ resource dependencies. Distribution or abundance models based on resource availability rather than land use types can be more informative about the ultimate processes behind observed population or distribution trends. Habitat use may depend on resources available, as well as disturbances that affect accessibility to such resources. Increasing human presence and urban encroachment may thus alter the relationships between habitat suitability and species abundance. Using 10 years of field data, we investigated whether variability in Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax) abundance was explained by functional habitat suitability (assessed through resource-based models) and urban encroachment. We found that spatial and temporal variations in Little Bustard abundance were explained by functional habitat suitability and avoidance of urban areas, but that the significance of each variable varied with spatial scale. Little Bustard abundance at each observation point significantly increased with local nesting but not foraging habitat suitability, and decreased with increasing proportion of urban areas. At larger spatial scales, temporal changes in Little Bustard abundance were highly significantly related to changes in foraging habitat suitability. Moreover, the positive relationship between foraging habitat suitability and Little Bustard abundance weakened as the proportion of urban areas increased, and almost disappeared when the proportion of urban areas was more than 5%. Our results underline the benefits of using resource-based models to better understand processes that relate animal abundance and habitat suitability, while simultaneously considering avoided elements of the landscape., [FR] Le comportement des espèces en fonction de l’affectation des terres peut être examiné dans une perspective fonctionnelle, selon laquelle les habitats sont décrits suivant la dépendance des espèces envers les ressources. Abell 3266 is a massive and complex merging galaxy cluster that exhibits significant substructure. We present new, highly sensitive radio continuum observations of Abell 3266 performed with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (0.8–1.1 GHz) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (1.1–3.1 GHz). These deep observations provide new insights into recently reported diffuse non-thermal phenomena associated with the intracluster medium, including a ‘wrong-way’ relic, a fossil plasma source, and an as-yet unclassified central diffuse ridge, which we reveal comprises the brightest part of a large-scale radio halo detected here for the first time. The ‘wrong-way’ relic is highly atypical of its kind: it exhibits many classical signatures of a shock-related radio relic, while at the same time exhibiting strong spectral steepening. While radio relics are generally consistent with a quasi-stationary shock scenario, the ‘wrong-way’ relic is not. We study the spectral properties of the fossil plasma source; it exhibits an ultrasteep and highly curved radio spectrum, indicating an extremely aged electron population. The larger scale radio halo fills much of the cluster centre, and presents a strong connection between the thermal and non-thermal components of the intracluster medium, along with evidence of substructure. Whether the central diffuse ridge is simply a brighter component of the halo, or a mini-halo, remains an open question. Finally, we study the morphological and spectral properties of the multiple complex radio galaxies in this cluster in unprecedented detail, tracing their evolutionary history.

Grazing controls bacterial abundances and composition in many ecosystems. In marine systems, heterotrophic flagellates (HFs) are important predators. Assemblages of HFs are primarily formed by species still uncultured; therefore, many aspects of their trophic behaviour are poorly known. Here, we assessed the functional response of the whole assemblage and of four taxa grown in an unamended seawater incubation. We used fluorescently labelled bacteria to create a prey gradient of two orders of magnitude in abundance and estimated ingestion rates. Natural HFs had a half-saturation constant of 6.7 × 105 prey ml−1, a value lower than that of cultured flagellates and within the range of marine planktonic bacterial abundances. Minorisa minuta was well adapted to low prey abundances and very efficient in ingesting bacteria. MAST-4 and MAST-7 were also well adapted to the typical marine abundances but less voracious. In contrast, Paraphysomonas imperforata, a typical cultured species, did not achieve ingestion rate saturation even at the highest prey concentration assayed. Our study, beside to set the basis for the fundamental differences between cultured and uncultured bacterial grazers, indicate that the examined predator taxa have different functional responses, suggesting that they occupy distinct ecological niches according to their grazing strategies and prey preferences

Adherent-invasive E. coli (AIEC) has largely been implicated in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease (CD). E. coli strains with similar genetic backgrounds and virulence genes profiles have been associated with other intestinal disorders, such as ulcerative colitis (UC), colorectal cancer (CRC), and coeliac disease (CeD), but the role of AIEC in these diseases remains unexplored. We aimed to assess the distribution, abundance, and pathogenic features of AIEC in UC, CRC, and CeD.

The HIV-1 Envelope glycoprotein (Env) is the sole target for broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs). Env is heavily glycosylated with host-derived N-glycans, and many bnAbs bind to, or are dependent upon, Env glycans for neutralization. Although glycan-binding bnAbs are frequently detected in HIV-infected individuals, attempts to elicit them have been unsuccessful because of the poor immunogenicity of Env N-glycans. Here, we report cross-reactivity of glycan-binding bnAbs with self- and non-self N-glycans and glycoprotein antigens from different life-stages of Schistosoma mansoni. Using the IAVI Protocol C HIV infection cohort, we examine the relationship between S. mansoni seropositivity and development of bnAbs targeting glycan-dependent epitopes. We show that the unmutated common ancestor of the N332/V3-specific bnAb lineage PCDN76, isolated from an HIV-infected donor with S. mansoni seropositivity, binds to S. mansoni cercariae while lacking reactivity to gp120. Overall, these results present a strategy for elicitation of glycan-reactive bnAbs which could be exploited in HIV-1 vaccine development.

Thyroid cancer is the most common primary endocrine malignancy in adults and its incidence is rapidly increasing. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), generally defined as RNA molecules longer than 200 nucleotides with no protein-encoding capacity, are highly tissue-specific molecules that serve important roles in gene regulation through a variety of different mechanisms, including acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) that ‘sponge’ microRNAs (miRNAs). In the present study, using an integrated approach through RNA-sequencing of paired thyroid tumor and non-tumor samples, we have identified an interactome network between lncRNAs and miRNAs and examined the functional consequences in vitro and in vivo of one of such interactions. We have identified a likely operative post-transcriptional regulatory network in which the downregulated lncRNA, SPTY2D1-AS1, is predicted to target the most abundant and upregulated miRNAs in thyroid cancer, particularly miR-221, a well-known oncomiRNA in cancer. Indeed, SPTY2D1-AS1 functions as a potent tumor suppressor in vitro and in vivo, it is downregulated in the most advanced stages of human thyroid cancer, and it seems to block the processing of the primary form of miR-221. Overall, our results link SPTY2D1-AS1 to thyroid cancer progression and highlight the potential use of this lncRNA as a therapeutic target of thyroid cancer.

Most studies of phenotypic selection in the wild have focussed on morphological and life‐history traits and looked at abiotic (climatic) variation as the main driver of selection. Consequently, our knowledge of the effects of biotic environmental variation on phenotypic selection on sexual traits is scarce. Population density can be considered a proxy for the intensity of intrasexual and intersexual competition and could therefore be a key factor influencing the covariation between individual fitness and the expression of sexual traits. Here, we used an individual‐based data set from a population of pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) monitored over 24 years to analyze the effect of breeding density on phenotypic selection on dorsal plumage colouration, a heritable and sexually selected ornament in males of this species. Using the number of recruits as a fitness proxy, our results showed overall stabilizing selection on male dorsal colouration, with intermediate phenotypes being favoured over extremely dark and dull individuals. However, our results did not support the hypothesis that breeding density mediates phenotypic selection on this sexual trait. We discuss the possible role of other biotic factors influencing selection on ornamental plumage.
