Abstract: Airless bodies are subjected to space-weathering effects that modify the first few microns of their surface. Therefore, understanding their impact on the optical properties of asteroids is key to the interpretation of their color variability and infrared reflectance observations. The recent Hayabusa2 sample return mission to asteroid Ryugu offers the first opportunity to study these effects, in the case of the most abundant spectral type among the main-asteroid belt, C-type objects. This study employs vibrational electron energy-loss spectroscopy in the transmission electron microscope to achieve the spatial resolution required to measure the distinct mid-infrared spectral signature of Ryugu's space-weathered surface. The comparison with the spectrum of the pristine underlying matrix reveals the loss of structural -OH and C-rich components in the space-weathered layers, providing direct experimental evidence that exposure to the space environment tends to mask the optical signatures of phyllosilicates and carbonaceous matter. Our findings should contribute to rectifying potential underestimations of water and carbon content of C-type asteroids when studied through remote sensing with new-generation telescopes.

Abstract: Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

Abstract: Soil life supports the functioning and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Springtails (Collembola) are among the most abundant soil arthropods regulating soil fertility and flow of energy through above- and belowground food webs. However, the global distribution of springtail diversity and density, and how these relate to energy fluxes remains unknown. Here, using a global dataset representing 2470 sites, we estimate the total soil springtail biomass at 27.5 megatons carbon, which is threefold higher than wild terrestrial vertebrates, and record peak densities up to 2 million individuals per square meter in the tundra. Despite a 20-fold biomass difference between the tundra and the tropics, springtail energy use (community metabolism) remains similar across the latitudinal gradient, owing to the changes in temperature with latitude. Neither springtail density nor community metabolism is predicted by local species richness, which is high in the tropics, but comparably high in some temperate forests and even tundra. Changes in springtail activity may emerge from latitudinal gradients in temperature, predation and resource limitation in soil communities. Contrasting relationships of biomass, diversity and activity of springtail communities with temperature suggest that climate warming will alter fundamental soil biodiversity metrics in different directions, potentially restructuring terrestrial food webs and affecting soil functioning.

Abstract: Novel coordination polymers embedding electroactive moieties present a high interest in the development of porous conducting materials. While tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) based metal-organic frameworks were reported to yield through-space conducting frameworks, the use of S-enriched scaffolds remains elusive in this field. Herein is reported the employment of bis(vinylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BVDT-TTF) functionalized with pyridine coordinating moieties in coordination polymers. Its combination with various transition metals yielded four isostructural networks, whose conductivity increased upon chemical oxidation with iodine. The oxidation was confirmed in a single-crystal to single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiment for the Cd(II) coordination polymer. Raman spectroscopy measurements and DFT calculations confirmed the oxidation state of the bulk materials, and band structure calculations assessed the ground state as an electronically localized antiferromagnetic state, while the conduction occurs in a 2D manner. These results are shedding light to comprehend how to improve through-space conductivity thanks to sulfur enriched ligands.

Abstract: Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) targeting the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) are promising molecules for therapeutic or prophylactic interventions. Beyond neutralization, bNAbs exert Fc-dependent functions including antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity and activation of the complement. Here, we show that a subset of bNAbs targeting the CD4 binding site and the V1/V2 or V3 loops inhibit viral release from infected cells. We combined immunofluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and immunogold staining to reveal that some bNAbs form large aggregates of virions at the surface of infected cells. This activity correlates with the capacity of bNAbs to bind to Env at the cell surface and to neutralize cell-free viral particles. We further show that antibody bivalency is required for viral retention, and that aggregated virions are neutralized. We have thus identified an additional antiviral activity of bNAbs, which block HIV-1 release by tethering viral particles at the surface of infected cells.

Abstract: This paper provides a detailed description and the functional anatomy of the forelimb of an early Oligocene genet-sized arc-toid carnivoran, Amphicynodon leptorhynchus, to infer its probable lifestyle. This work represents the first insights into the functional anatomy of the postcranial skeleton and palaeoecology of an emblematic member of the first radiation of arctoid carnivorans, the poorly known Amphicynodontidae, a group very likely related to bears. So far, the Amphicynodontidae have only been studied on the basis of their cranial and dental remains. The fossil site of Itardies (MP23, lower Oligocene), in the Quercy Phosphorites (France), have yielded hundreds of postcranial remains attributed to Am. leptorhynchus, allowing a com-plete analysis of its locomotor behaviour in comparison to a large sample of extant carnivorans showing diverse lifestyles. The anatomy of the forelimb of Am. leptorhynchus indicates well-developed climbing skills and grasping abilities. Thus, this early arctoid was probably living mostly in trees, moving on the ground basically for foraging as observed in small modern climb-ing carnivorans such as the red panda or the kinkajou, although some other climbing carnivorans can also live in rocky areas.

Abstract: The BRCA2 tumor suppressor is a DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair factor essential for maintaining genome integrity. BRCA2-deficient cells spontaneously accumulate DNA-RNA hybrids, a known source of genome instability. However, the specific role of BRCA2 on these structures remains poorly understood. Here we identified the DEAD-box RNA helicase DDX5 as a BRCA2-interacting protein. DDX5 associates with DNA-RNA hybrids that form in the vicinity of DSBs, and this association is enhanced by BRCA2. Notably, BRCA2 stimulates the DNA-RNA hybrid-unwinding activity of DDX5 helicase. An impaired BRCA2-DDX5 interaction, as observed in cells expressing the breast cancer variant BRCA2-T207A, reduces the association of DDX5 with DNA-RNA hybrids, decreases the number of RPA foci, and alters the kinetics of appearance of RAD51 foci upon irradiation. Our findings are consistent with DNA-RNA hybrids constituting an impediment for the repair of DSBs by homologous recombination and reveal BRCA2 and DDX5 as active players in their removal.

Abstract: Interesting sensing performances of indoor formaldehyde pollution were obtained when small amounts of zinc were introduced in tin oxides. Nanostructured Sn oxide-based porous materials doped with Zn or not, were synthesized using hydrothermal routes. The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared metal-oxide materials were characterized using nitrogen adsorption, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Gas sensors were prepared using the aforementioned tin oxide materials and they exhibited a high sensitivity to formaldehyde at 230 °C, as well as a good repeatability over the time. Their limit of formaldehyde detection was as low as 8 ppb in dry air and 50 ppb in air with 60% RH at 25 °C. These results were much better that those reported in the open literature and they were attributed to both higher area BET, around 180 m2/g, and smaller crystallite size, 3.1 nm.

Abstract: Ocean microbes drive biogeochemical cycling on a global scale1. However, this cycling is constrained by viruses that affect community composition, metabolic activity, and evolutionary trajectories2, 3. Owing to challenges with the sampling and cultivation of viruses, genome-level viral diversity remains poorly described and grossly understudied, with less than 1% of observed surface-ocean viruses known4. Here we assemble complete genomes and large genomic fragments from both surface- and deep-ocean viruses sampled during the Tara Oceans and Malaspina research expeditions5, 6, and analyse the resulting ‘global ocean virome’ dataset to present a global map of abundant, double-stranded DNA viruses complete with genomic and ecological contexts. A total of 15,222 epipelagic and mesopelagic viral populations were identified, comprising 867 viral clusters (defined as approximately genus-level groups7, 8). This roughly triples the number of known ocean viral populations4 and doubles the number of candidate bacterial and archaeal virus genera8, providing a near-complete sampling of epipelagic communities at both the population and viral-cluster level. We found that 38 of the 867 viral clusters were locally or globally abundant, together accounting for nearly half of the viral populations in any global ocean virome sample. While two-thirds of these clusters represent newly described viruses lacking any cultivated representative, most could be computationally linked to dominant, ecologically relevant microbial hosts. Moreover, we identified 243 viral-encoded auxiliary metabolic genes, of which only 95 were previously known. Deeper analyses of four of these auxiliary metabolic genes (dsrC, soxYZ, P-II (also known as glnB) and amoC) revealed that abundant viruses may directly manipulate sulfur and nitrogen cycling throughout the epipelagic ocean. Abstract: In order to obtain accurate terahertz center frequencies for SO and its isotopologues, we have studied the absorption spectrum of SO, 34SO, and 33SO up to 2.5 THz using continuous-wave terahertz photomixing based on a frequency comb providing an accuracy down to 10 kHz. Sulfur monoxide was produced in a radio frequency discharge of air in a cell containing pure sulfur. Together with the strong absorption signal of the main isotopologue, transitions of 34SO (34S: 4.21%) and 33SO (33S: 0.75%) were observed in natural abundance. The newly observed transitions constitute an extension of the observed rotational quantum numbers of the molecule toward higher N values, allowing an improvement of the molecular parameters for the three species. An isotopically invariant fit has been performed based on pure rotational and ro-vibrational transitions of all SO isotopologues, enabling their accurate line position prediction at higher frequencies. Thanks to this new set of parameters, it is now possible to predict with very high accuracy the frequencies of the ro-vibrational lines. This should enable the research of SO in the mid-IR using ground-based IR telescopes, space-based telescope archives (Infrared Space Observatory, Spitzer), and future space missions such as the James Webb Space Telescope. This set of parameters is particularly well adapted for the detection of SO lines in O-rich evolved stars or in molecular clouds in absorption against bright IR sources.

Abstract: [Aim] Parasites with global distributions and wide host spectra provide excellent models for exploring the factors that drive parasite diversification. Here, we tested the relative force of host and geography in shaping population structure of a widely distributed and common ectoparasite of colonial seabirds, the tick Ixodes uriae., [Location] Two natural geographic replicates of the system: numerous seabird colonies of the North Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean basins., [Methods] Using eight microsatellite markers and tick samples from a suite of multi-specific seabird colonies, we examined tick population structure in the North Pacific and compare patterns of diversity and structure to those in the Atlantic basin. Analyses included population genetic estimations of diversity and population differentiation, exploratory multivariate analyses, and Bayesian clustering approaches. These different analyses explicitly took into account both the geographic distance among colonies and host use by the tick., [Results] Overall, little geographic structure was observed among Pacific tick populations. However, host-related genetic differentiation was evident, but was variable among host types and lower than in the North Atlantic., [Main conclusions] Tick population structure is concordant with the genetic structure observed in seabird host species within each ocean basin, where seabird populations tend to be less structured in the North Pacific than in the North Atlantic. Reduced tick genetic structure in the North Pacific suggests that host movement among colonies, and thus tick dispersal, is higher in this region. In addition to information on parasite diversity and gene flow, our findings raise interesting questions about the subtle ways that host behaviour, distribution and phylogeographic history shape the genetics of associated parasites across geographic landscapes.

12. Increased susceptibility to oxidative damage as a cost of accelerated somatic growth in zebra finches

Abstract: 1. Most animals do not grow at their maximal rate. This might appear puzzling because the early attainment of a large body size incurs several selective benefits, such as reduced risk of predation and earlier reproductive output. Several hypotheses have been suggested to explain this paradox. Among them, the cost due to high levels of oxidative stress, as the consequence of sustained metabolic activity during growth, has been put forward., 2. In this study, we wished to assess this cost in captive zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). In order to manipulate access to food and consequently early growth, hatchlings were randomly assigned to reduced or enlarged broods. Even though nestlings raised in enlarged broods were smaller when 20-days-old compared to nestlings raised in reduced broods, they grew faster during the following 20-day period., 3. When 60-days-old, we measured the resistance of red blood cells against a free radical attack and correlated these values to nestling growth rate. In agreement with the prediction, we found that red blood cell resistance to free radicals was negatively correlated with growth rate, nestlings that grew faster being those with the weakest capacity to resist a free radical attack. These results support the hypothesis that oxidative damage might constrain growth rate. Furthermore, the fact that the relationship was only established during the period of accelerated growth after the initial delay also suggests that compensatory growth can negatively affect the individual resistance to oxidative damage.

Abstract: CandidaDB is a database dedicated to the genome of the most prevalent systemic fungal pathogen of humans, Candida albicans. CandidaDB is based on an annotation of the Stanford Genome Technology Center C.albicans genome sequence data by the European Galar Fungail Consortium. CandidaDB Release 2.0 (June 2004) contains information pertaining to Assembly 19 of the genome of C.albicans strain SC5314. The current release contains 6244 annotated entries corresponding to 130 tRNA genes and 5917 protein-coding genes. For these, it provides tentative functional assignments along with numerous pre-run analyses that can assist the researcher in the evaluation of gene function for the purpose of specific or large-scale analysis. CandidaDB is based on GenoList, a generic relational data schema and a World Wide Web interface that has been adapted to the handling of eukaryotic genomes. The interface allows users to browse easily through genome data and retrieve information. CandidaDB also provides more elaborate tools, such as pattern searching, that are tightly connected to the overall browsing system. As the C.albicans genome is diploid and still incompletely assembled, CandidaDB provides tools to browse the genome by individual supercontigs and to examine information about allelic sequences obtained from complementary contigs. Abstract: Myf5 is the first myogenic regulatory factor to be expressed in the mouse embryo and it determines the entry of cells into the skeletal muscle programme. A region situated between -58 kb and -48 kb from the gene directs Myf5 transcription at sites where muscles will form. We now show that this region consists of a number of distinct regulatory elements that specifically target sites of myogenesis in the somite, limbs and hypoglossal cord, and also sites of Myf5 transcription in the central nervous system. Deletion of these sequences in the context of the locus shows that elements within the region are essential, and also reveals the combinatorial complexity of the transcriptional regulation of Myf5. Both within the -58 kb to -48 kb region and elsewhere in the locus, multiple sequences are present that direct transcription in subdomains of a single site during development, thus revealing distinct phases of myogenesis when subpopulations of progenitor cells enter the programme of skeletal muscle differentiation.

Abstract: Olfaction was long considered to belong more to the realm of art than to that of science. As a result, how the brain perceives, discriminates, and recognizes odorant molecules is still a mystery. Recent progress has nonetheless been made at early stages of the olfactory pathway when olfactory studies entered into the molecular era to elucidate the first contact of an odor molecule with a receptor. Our group focuses on the analysis of odor information in the olfactory bulb, the first processing relay in the mammalian brain. Using this model, we are attempting to decipher the code for odorant information. Furthermore, the olfactory bulb also provides an attractive model to investigate neuronal proliferation, differentiation, migration, and neuronal death, processes involving an interplay between genetic and epigenetic influences. Finally, our goal is to explore the possible consequences of the olfactory bulb plasticity, in olfactory performance. For these purposes, we aim to combine morphological, electrophysiological and behavioral approaches to investigate: (1) how the olfactory bulb processes odor molecule information, (2) how neural precursors differentiate into olfactory bulb interneurons, (3) how these newly-generated neurons integrate into an operational neural network, (4) what role they play in the adult olfactory bulb, and (5) how are basic olfactory functions maintained in such a sensory system subjected to continuous renewal of a large percentage of its neuronal population. These questions should provide new fuel for the molecular and cellular bases of sensory perception and shed light onto cellular bases of learning and memory.

Abstract: Reproduction in flowering plants is characterized by double fertilization and the resulting formation of both the zygotic embryo and the associated endosperm. In many species it is possible to experimentally deviate pollen development towards an embryogenic pathway. This developmental switch, referred to as microspore embryogenesis or androgenesis, leads to the formation of embryos similar to zygotic embryos. In a screen for genes specifically expressed during early androgenesis, two maize genes were isolated by mRNA differential display. Both genes represent new molecular markers expressed at a very young stage of androgenic embryogenesis. When their expression pattern was studied during normal reproductive development, both showed early endosperm-specific expression. Investigation of the cytological features of young androgenic embryos revealed that they present a partially coenocytic organization similar to that of early endosperm. These findings suggest that maize androgenesis may possibly involve both embryogenesis and the establishment of endosperm-like components.

17. Cytotoxic activity of a recombinant GnRH-PAP fusion toxin on human tumor cell lines

Abstract: Pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP), a ribosome-inactivating protein isolated from the leaves of Phytolacca americana, reveals potent antiviral activity against viruses or cytotoxic action against cells once inside the cytoplasm. Therefore PAP is a good candidate to be used as an immunotoxin. We constructed a bacterial expression plasmid encoding PAP as a fusion protein with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), a neuropeptide with receptor sites on several gynaecologic tumors. The resulting recombinant toxin was produced in Escherichia coli and accumulated in inclusion bodies. After purification under denaturing conditions, renaturated GnRH-PAP shows an IC50 of 3 nM on in vitro translation assays and selectively inhibits the growth of the GnRH receptor positive Ishikawa cell line (ID50 of 15 nM); on the other hand, neither GnRH nor PAP alone had any effect.

18. Collisional effects in the stimulated Raman Q branch of O2 and O2-N2

Abstract: The fundamental isotropic Raman Q branch of oxygen at pressures up to 2 atm and for temperatures between 295 and 1350 K has been recorded using stimulated Raman gain spectroscopy (SRGS) for collisions with oxygen and nitrogen. The line broadening and line shifting coefficients have been determined for several rotational quantum numbers (up to N = 55 at 1350 K). The temperature dependence of these coefficients has also been studied for most of the rotational lines. The line parameters (widths and shifts) have been then calculated a priori through a semiclassical model. A good agreement between experimental and theoretical data has been observed. Another theoretical approach based on fitting and scaling law has been used to calculate the line broadening coefficients. It is shown that a modified exponential energy gap model (MEG) and an energy corrected sudden law (ECS) for the state-to-state rotationally inelastic rates, account for the rotational and temperature dependences of the observed linewidths. With regard to the energy corrected sudden law, the best results are obtained when the basis rate constants are modeled with a hybrid exponential-power fitting law (EP). The line broadening and shifting coefficients of the oxygen-nitrogen mixture are very close to those found for pure oxygen. © 1992 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Novel coordination polymers embedding electroactive moieties present a high interest in the development of porous conducting materials. While tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) based metal-organic frameworks were reported to yield through-space conducting frameworks, the use of S-enriched scaffolds remains elusive in this field. Herein is reported the employment of bis(vinylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BVDT-TTF) functionalized with pyridine coordinating moieties in coordination polymers. Its combination with various transition metals yielded four isostructural networks, whose conductivity increased upon chemical oxidation with iodine. The oxidation was confirmed in a single-crystal to single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiment for the Cd(II) coordination polymer. Raman spectroscopy measurements and DFT calculations confirmed the oxidation state of the bulk materials, and band structure calculations assessed the ground state as an electronically localized antiferromagnetic state, while the conduction occurs in a 2D manner. 20. Broadly neutralizing anti-HIV-1 antibodies tether viral particles at the surface of infected cells

Abstract: Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) targeting the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) are promising molecules for therapeutic or prophylactic interventions. Beyond neutralization, bNAbs exert Fc-dependent functions including antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity and activation of the complement. Here, we show that a subset of bNAbs targeting the CD4 binding site and the V1/V2 or V3 loops inhibit viral release from infected cells. We combined immunofluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and immunogold staining to reveal that some bNAbs form large aggregates of virions at the surface of infected cells. This activity correlates with the capacity of bNAbs to bind to Env at the cell surface and to neutralize cell-free viral particles. We further show that antibody bivalency is required for viral retention, and that aggregated virions are neutralized. Abstract: This paper provides a detailed description and the functional anatomy of the forelimb of an early Oligocene genet-sized arc-toid carnivoran, Amphicynodon leptorhynchus, to infer its probable lifestyle. This work represents the first insights into the functional anatomy of the postcranial skeleton and palaeoecology of an emblematic member of the first radiation of arctoid carnivorans, the poorly known Amphicynodontidae, a group very likely related to bears. So far, the Amphicynodontidae have only been studied on the basis of their cranial and dental remains. The fossil site of Itardies (MP23, lower Oligocene), in the Quercy Phosphorites (France), have yielded hundreds of postcranial remains attributed to Am. leptorhynchus, allowing a com-plete analysis of its locomotor behaviour in comparison to a large sample of extant carnivorans showing diverse lifestyles. The anatomy of the forelimb of Am. leptorhynchus indicates well-developed climbing skills and grasping abilities. Thus, this early arctoid was probably living mostly in trees, moving on the ground basically for foraging as observed in small modern climb-ing carnivorans such as the red panda or the kinkajou, although some other climbing carnivorans can also live in rocky areas., This research was funded by the French CNRS in the frame of the “Recherche coopérative sur programme : Phosphorites du Quercy”. Abstract: A series of chiral platina[5]helicenes displaying dual luminescence, i.e., fluorescence between 450 and 600 nm and red/NIR phosphorescence between 700 and 900 nm, has been synthesised, characterised and studied by first-principle calculations. This unusual behavior has been attributed to limited electronic interactions between the d orbitals of the metal and the π-orbitals of the organic ligand on the excited-state. Accordingly, the electron richness of the donor group on the helical ligand does not affect the energy of the phosphorescence process but does play a role on its efficiency. Interestingly, near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence can be obtained for the three complexes with dissymmetry factors up to 3 × 10−3 at 750 nm

Abstract: The BRCA2 tumor suppressor is a DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair factor essential for maintaining genome integrity. BRCA2-deficient cells spontaneously accumulate DNA-RNA hybrids, a known source of genome instability. However, the specific role of BRCA2 on these structures remains poorly understood. Here we identified the DEAD-box RNA helicase DDX5 as a BRCA2-interacting protein. DDX5 associates with DNA-RNA hybrids that form in the vicinity of DSBs, and this association is enhanced by BRCA2. Notably, BRCA2 stimulates the DNA-RNA hybrid-unwinding activity of DDX5 helicase. An impaired BRCA2-DDX5 interaction, as observed in cells expressing the breast cancer variant BRCA2-T207A, reduces the association of DDX5 with DNA-RNA hybrids, decreases the number of RPA foci, and alters the kinetics of appearance of RAD51 foci upon irradiation. Abstract: 16 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, Knowledge of ocean surface current at high resolutions is crucial for many applications. In addition to the classic satellite altimetry retrieval from sea surface height (SSH), ocean surface currents can be retrieved from sea surface temperature (SST) observations using a transfer function between SST and SSH. Previous works showed the potential of microwave SST observations to reconstruct ocean surface currents using a synergistic approach: an optimal transfer function that combines the phase of SST with the SSH amplitude spectra. This synergistic approach revealed that surface quasi geostrophy (SQG) reconstruction can be enhanced and opened up the possibility to improve spatial resolution of ocean currents retrieved from altimeters observations if infrared SST observations are considered. However, before applying this synergistic approach to satellite observations, we need to analyze and characterize the spectral properties of the transfer function. This spectral characterization of the transfer function allows to exploit the synergy between SST and SSH observations that have different measurement topology and different spatial resolution. Here, we performed a feasibility study using the daily outputs of the operational Mercator global analysis and forecast system at (1/12)° in the western coast of Australia (27–35°S, 107–113°E) spanning from 26 November 2012 to 26 November 2016. Results showed that the mean transfer function in this region presents two well different bands: one characterized by a negative slope slightly steeper (α = −1.2) than the k−1 predicted by the SQG solution for scales smaller than 270 km and another characterized by a plateau for wavelengths larger than 270 km. In addition, the results revealed that the inhomogeneity in dynamics of the flow limits global solutions. Finally, we showed that information contained along the track is enough for a synoptic reconstruction of the flow in this region, which shows the feasibility of applying this methodology to real satellite observations, This work was mainly supported by the ESA Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) Living Planet Fellowship OCEANUS. This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/, Interesting sensing performances of indoor formaldehyde pollution were obtained when small amounts of zinc were introduced in tin oxides. Nanostructured Sn oxide-based porous materials doped with Zn or not, were synthesized using hydrothermal routes. The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared metal-oxide materials were characterized using nitrogen adsorption, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Gas sensors were prepared using the aforementioned tin oxide materials and they exhibited a high sensitivity to formaldehyde at 230 °C, as well as a good repeatability over the time. Their limit of formaldehyde detection was as low as 8 ppb in dry air and 50 ppb in air with 60% RH at 25 °C. Abstract: Roux, Simon ... et al.-- 5 pages, 3 figures, supporting information https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/nature19366, Ocean microbes drive biogeochemical cycling on a global scale1. However, this cycling is constrained by viruses that affect community composition, metabolic activity, and evolutionary trajectories2, 3. Owing to challenges with the sampling and cultivation of viruses, genome-level viral diversity remains poorly described and grossly understudied, with less than 1% of observed surface-ocean viruses known4. Here we assemble complete genomes and large genomic fragments from both surface- and deep-ocean viruses sampled during the Tara Oceans and Malaspina research expeditions5, 6, and analyse the resulting ‘global ocean virome’ dataset to present a global map of abundant, double-stranded DNA viruses complete with genomic and ecological contexts. A total of 15,222 epipelagic and mesopelagic viral populations were identified, comprising 867 viral clusters (defined as approximately genus-level groups7, 8). This roughly triples the number of known ocean viral populations4 and doubles the number of candidate bacterial and archaeal virus genera8, providing a near-complete sampling of epipelagic communities at both the population and viral-cluster level. We found that 38 of the 867 viral clusters were locally or globally abundant, together accounting for nearly half of the viral populations in any global ocean virome sample. While two-thirds of these clusters represent newly described viruses lacking any cultivated representative, most could be computationally linked to dominant, ecologically relevant microbial hosts. Moreover, we identified 243 viral-encoded auxiliary metabolic genes, of which only 95 were previously known. Deeper analyses of four of these auxiliary metabolic genes (dsrC, soxYZ, P-II (also known as glnB) and amoC) revealed that abundant viruses may directly manipulate sulfur and nitrogen cycling throughout the epipelagic ocean. 27. A complete spectroscopic characterization of so and its isotopologues up to the terahertz domain

Abstract: In order to obtain accurate terahertz center frequencies for SO and its isotopologues, we have studied the absorption spectrum of SO, 34SO, and 33SO up to 2.5 THz using continuous-wave terahertz photomixing based on a frequency comb providing an accuracy down to 10 kHz. Sulfur monoxide was produced in a radio frequency discharge of air in a cell containing pure sulfur. Together with the strong absorption signal of the main isotopologue, transitions of 34SO (34S: 4.21%) and 33SO (33S: 0.75%) were observed in natural abundance. The newly observed transitions constitute an extension of the observed rotational quantum numbers of the molecule toward higher N values, allowing an improvement of the molecular parameters for the three species. An isotopically invariant fit has been performed based on pure rotational and ro-vibrational transitions of all SO isotopologues, enabling their accurate line position prediction at higher frequencies. Thanks to this new set of parameters, it is now possible to predict with very high accuracy the frequencies of the ro-vibrational lines. This should enable the research of SO in the mid-IR using ground-based IR telescopes, space-based telescope archives (Infrared Space Observatory, Spitzer), and future space missions such as the James Webb Space Telescope. Abstract: [Aim] Parasites with global distributions and wide host spectra provide excellent models for exploring the factors that drive parasite diversification. Here, we tested the relative force of host and geography in shaping population structure of a widely distributed and common ectoparasite of colonial seabirds, the tick Ixodes uriae., [Location] Two natural geographic replicates of the system: numerous seabird colonies of the North Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean basins., [Methods] Using eight microsatellite markers and tick samples from a suite of multi-specific seabird colonies, we examined tick population structure in the North Pacific and compare patterns of diversity and structure to those in the Atlantic basin. Analyses included population genetic estimations of diversity and population differentiation, exploratory multivariate analyses, and Bayesian clustering approaches. These different analyses explicitly took into account both the geographic distance among colonies and host use by the tick., [Results] Overall, little geographic structure was observed among Pacific tick populations. However, host-related genetic differentiation was evident, but was variable among host types and lower than in the North Atlantic., [Main conclusions] Tick population structure is concordant with the genetic structure observed in seabird host species within each ocean basin, where seabird populations tend to be less structured in the North Pacific than in the North Atlantic. Reduced tick genetic structure in the North Pacific suggests that host movement among colonies, and thus tick dispersal, is higher in this region. Abstract: 1. Most animals do not grow at their maximal rate. This might appear puzzling because the early attainment of a large body size incurs several selective benefits, such as reduced risk of predation and earlier reproductive output. Several hypotheses have been suggested to explain this paradox. Among them, the cost due to high levels of oxidative stress, as the consequence of sustained metabolic activity during growth, has been put forward., 2. In this study, we wished to assess this cost in captive zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). In order to manipulate access to food and consequently early growth, hatchlings were randomly assigned to reduced or enlarged broods. Even though nestlings raised in enlarged broods were smaller when 20-days-old compared to nestlings raised in reduced broods, they grew faster during the following 20-day period., 3. When 60-days-old, we measured the resistance of red blood cells against a free radical attack and correlated these values to nestling growth rate. In agreement with the prediction, we found that red blood cell resistance to free radicals was negatively correlated with growth rate, nestlings that grew faster being those with the weakest capacity to resist a free radical attack. These results support the hypothesis that oxidative damage might constrain growth rate. Furthermore, the fact that the relationship was only established during the period of accelerated growth after the initial delay also suggests that compensatory growth can negatively affect the individual resistance to oxidative damage., Financial support was provided by the Ministère de la Recherche (ACI Jeunes Chercheurs to GS), and the Université de Bourgogne (BQR to GD, JP and BF). Abstract: Myf5 is the first myogenic regulatory factor to be expressed in the mouse embryo and it determines the entry of cells into the skeletal muscle programme. A region situated between -58 kb and -48 kb from the gene directs Myf5 transcription at sites where muscles will form. We now show that this region consists of a number of distinct regulatory elements that specifically target sites of myogenesis in the somite, limbs and hypoglossal cord, and also sites of Myf5 transcription in the central nervous system. Deletion of these sequences in the context of the locus shows that elements within the region are essential, and also reveals the combinatorial complexity of the transcriptional regulation of Myf5. Both within the -58 kb to -48 kb region and elsewhere in the locus, multiple sequences are present that direct transcription in subdomains of a single site during development, thus revealing distinct phases of myogenesis when subpopulations of progenitor cells enter the programme of skeletal muscle differentiation., This work in M.B.'s laboratory was supported by the Pasteur Institute and the CNRS and by grants from the ACI Integrative Biology Programme of the MJER, the AFM and the European Community (QLK3-CT-99/02). Abstract: Olfaction was long considered to belong more to the realm of art than to that of science. As a result, how the brain perceives, discriminates, and recognizes odorant molecules is still a mystery. Recent progress has nonetheless been made at early stages of the olfactory pathway when olfactory studies entered into the molecular era to elucidate the first contact of an odor molecule with a receptor. Our group focuses on the analysis of odor information in the olfactory bulb, the first processing relay in the mammalian brain. Using this model, we are attempting to decipher the code for odorant information. Furthermore, the olfactory bulb also provides an attractive model to investigate neuronal proliferation, differentiation, migration, and neuronal death, processes involving an interplay between genetic and epigenetic influences. Finally, our goal is to explore the possible consequences of the olfactory bulb plasticity, in olfactory performance. For these purposes, we aim to combine morphological, electrophysiological and behavioral approaches to investigate: (1) how the olfactory bulb processes odor molecule information, (2) how neural precursors differentiate into olfactory bulb interneurons, (3) how these newly-generated neurons integrate into an operational neural network, (4) what role they play in the adult olfactory bulb, and (5) how are basic olfactory functions maintained in such a sensory system subjected to continuous renewal of a large percentage of its neuronal population. Abstract: Reproduction in flowering plants is characterized by double fertilization and the resulting formation of both the zygotic embryo and the associated endosperm. In many species it is possible to experimentally deviate pollen development towards an embryogenic pathway. This developmental switch, referred to as microspore embryogenesis or androgenesis, leads to the formation of embryos similar to zygotic embryos. In a screen for genes specifically expressed during early androgenesis, two maize genes were isolated by mRNA differential display. Both genes represent new molecular markers expressed at a very young stage of androgenic embryogenesis. When their expression pattern was studied during normal reproductive development, both showed early endosperm-specific expression. Investigation of the cytological features of young androgenic embryos revealed that they present a partially coenocytic organization similar to that of early endosperm. Abstract: 11 pags., 5 figs., 9 tabs., The fundamental isotropic Raman Q branch of oxygen at pressures up to 2 atm and for temperatures between 295 and 1350 K has been recorded using stimulated Raman gain spectroscopy (SRGS) for collisions with oxygen and nitrogen. The line broadening and line shifting coefficients have been determined for several rotational quantum numbers (up to N = 55 at 1350 K). The temperature dependence of these coefficients has also been studied for most of the rotational lines. The line parameters (widths and shifts) have been then calculated a priori through a semiclassical model. A good agreement between experimental and theoretical data has been observed. Another theoretical approach based on fitting and scaling law has been used to calculate the line broadening coefficients. It is shown that a modified exponential energy gap model (MEG) and an energy corrected sudden law (ECS) for the state-to-state rotationally inelastic rates, account for the rotational and temperature dependences of the observed linewidths. With regard to the energy corrected sudden law, the best results are obtained when the basis rate constants are modeled with a hybrid exponential-power fitting law (EP).
