Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo is a kind of herb with high medicinal, ornamental, and commercial value, and is rich in polysaccharides. Polyploid breeding is an important breeding method for the genome doubling of medicinal species to increase biomass and polysaccharide production. Previous studies have revealed comparative transcriptome analysis and polysaccharide biosynthesis across the growth stages and plant parts, but there have been no studies dissecting such genes and pathways in tetraploid D. officinale. Therefore, this study aimed to unravel the molecular mechanisms of the increase in polysaccharide content in tetraploid D. officinale via the generation of four transcriptomic libraries for protocorm-like bodies and six-month-old seedlings of both diploid and tetraploid D. officinale plants. In this study, a total of 230,786,618 clean reads remained with a total of 34.62 Gb nucleotides generated; 274,403 unigenes were assembled, of which 73.99% were annotated to at least one of the protein databases; and of 17,451 unigenes, 6.35% were annotated to all seven protein databases (NR, NT, KO, Swiss-Prot, FAM, GO, and KOG). Putative genes encoding enzymes related to polysaccharide biosynthetic pathways were determined. RT-qPCR for 11 randomly selected genes involved in polysaccharides indicated consistency with RNA-Seq data and polysaccharide content. The expressions of nine genes were higher in tetraploid than in diploid plants, while the expressions of the other two genes encoding bifunctional enzymes were the opposite. This study has provided a foundation for subsequent works regarding the biosynthetic pathways of metabolites involved in the autoploidy of Dendrobium species in general, and D. officinale in particular.

Heavy metal contamination in the urban river has become the most severe problem in the urban environment, especially the zinc (Zn) compound is harmful to the environment at current levels of exposure. This study aims to assess the impact of urbanization and industrialization on Zn pollution in surface sediment at the Umeda River. Triplicate surface sediment samples were collected at nine sample points. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for analyzing the Zn and Fe concentrations. The surface sediments in the Umeda River contained 48–159 mg/kg of Zn. The results indicated that Zn concentrations were abundant in the ascending order of 600–1,000 μm, 300–600 μm, and smaller than 300 μm. The higher the grain size, the higher the particulate organic carbon which might contribute to the higher Zn and Fe concentrations. In addition, the sediment quality guidelines indicated that the Zn levels in the study area did not constitute a major threat to biota. Normalization with Fe showed that the Zn pollution in surface sediment had been influenced by anthropogenic activities such as industrialization and urbanization. Purpose Hypertension is common in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). For the evaluation of blood pressure (BP), 24-h ambulatory BP measurements (ABPM) are considered superior to usual office measurements but are also resource demanding and troublesome to many patients. We therefore evaluated the use of unattended automated office BP (AOBP) during the first year following living donor kidney transplantation and compared AOBP with ABPM as obtained 12 months after transplantation. Materials and methods Data were retrieved from a cohort of 57 KTRs (mean age 45 ± 14 years, 75% males) who all received kidneys from living donors and had a good graft function (estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 52 ± 16 ml/min/1.73 m2 at 12 months). Unattended AOBP was measured at each visit to the outpatient clinic using the BpTru® device, while ABPM was obtained by Spacelabs® equipment before and 12 months after transplantation. Results AOBP remained stable from month 2 (130.2 ± 10.8/82.2 ± 7.8 mmHg) to month 12 (129.0 ± 12.8/83.1 ± 9.6 mmHg) post-transplantation. At 12 months follow-up, ambulatory daytime systolic BP was slightly higher than AOBP (132.7 ± 10.7 vs. 129.4 ± 12.2 mmHg, p = 0.04), while diastolic BP was similar (82.7 ± 7.7 vs. 82.0 ± 10.2 mmHg). Using Bland–Altman plots, 95% limits of agreements were −17.9 to 24.5 mmHg for systolic and −16.5 to 15.1 mmHg for diastolic BP. When considering a target BP of ≤130/

This paper investigates the effects of corruption on the performance of newly established enterprises. Using longitudinal data from enterprise surveys containing virtually all firms over the period from 2011 to 2015 in Vietnam, we find that corruption deteriorates firm financial performance, and subsequently exposes them to a greater failure probability. We further find that, while corruption imposes more harmful effects on the performance and survival of private domestic firms, it exerts no significant impact on state-owned firms. On the other hand, foreign firms are also able to take advantage of corruption to enhance their performance and survivability. In addition, our results suggest that the more mature firms are better at dealing with corruption and can eventually take advantage of it to enhance their performance. The results are robust after various model specifications as well as alternative classifications of newly established firms.

Microdeletions of Y chromosomes frequently occur in 3 subregions of the AZF, namely, AZFa, AZFb, and AZFc, with 6 basic STS marker sequences, which are sY84, sY86 (AZFa), sY127, sY134 (AZFb), and sY254, sY255 (AZFc). According to EAA/EMNQ guidelines, 11 additional AZFabc marker sequences should be used to determine the extent of the microdeletion in the AZF region of infertile men, which is known as 11 extended STSs. By applying mPCR, the authors develop an optimal detection procedure for the 6 basic STS and 11 extended STS using 3 multiplex PCR reactions. The first multiplex PCR reaction includes 6 basic STS plus the 2 control sequences sex-determining region Y (SRY) and zinc finger protein X/Y-linked (ZFX/Y). The second multiplex PCR reaction includes the 6 extended STS sY88, sY1182, sY105, sY121, sY1191, and sY1291 and the 2 control sequences SRY and ZFX/Y. The third multiplex PCR reaction includes the 5 extended STS sY153, sY160, sY82, sY143, and sY83 and the 2 control sequences SRY and ZFX/Y. Six basic primer sequences and eleven extended primer sequences are redesigned to simultaneously pair and amplify STS in the same multiplex reaction: set of 8 primers for 6 basic STS: 6 basic STS + 2 (SRY, ZFX/Y), 8 extension primers set E1: 6 extended STS + 2 (SRY, ZFX/Y), and 7 extension primers set E2: 5 extended STS + 2 (SRY, ZFX/Y). We successfully designed primer pairs with high specificity and stability and successfully amplified 6 basic STS and 11 extended STS, which ensures that the STSs have the correct sequence as recommended by EAA/EMQN and are consistent with the NCBI gene bank. This study has successfully developed a procedure to simultaneously detect 17 STSs, including 6 basic STSs and 11 extended STSs in the AZF region using 3 multiplex PCR reactions.

The ownership - efficiency relationship in a firm has always been an important topic. In this paper, we focus on the state owned versus non-state-owned status of Vietnamese manufacturing firms, to shed light into the relationship between these two variables when using a more state-of-the-art method as a stochastic meta-frontier method. Applying the method for two periods: one during the global economic crisis and the other after the end of the crisis, the study determines that in both periods, there was a strong evidence that non-state-owned firms performed much better than state owned counterpart. We also found that the difference became even larger during the harsh time and sub-industries with non-state-owned firms could outperform the state-owned firms, significantly.

Background: In 2016-2017, 68 women in Southern Vietnam had RT-PCR confirmed Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy. We report here the outcomes of the pregnancies and the virological analyses related to this outbreak. Methods: We collected clinical and epidemiological information from the women who were enrolled in the study. Medical records related to the pregnancy in 2016–2017 were retrieved for those who were not able to be enrolled in the study. Children born to women with ZIKV infection during pregnancy were also enrolled. Serum samples were evaluated for presence of ZIKV antibodies. Phylogenetic analyses were performed on Zika virus genomes sequenced from the 2016–2017 serum samples. Findings: Of the 68 pregnancies, 58 were livebirths and 10 were medically terminated. Four of the medical records from cases of fetal demise were able to be retrieved, of which one was consistent with congenital ZIKV infection. Of the 58 women with a livebirth, 21 participated in the follow-up investigation. All but two women had serologic evidence of ZIKV infection. Of the 21 children included in the study (mean age: 30.3 months), 3 had microcephaly at birth. No other clinical abnormalities were reported and no differences in neurodevelopment were observed compared to a control group. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a clade within the ZIKV Asian lineage and branch at the root of samples from the 2013–2014 French Polynesian outbreak. The prM S139N mutation was not observed. Interpretation: We have been able to demonstrate a clade within the ZIKV Asian lineage implicated in adverse pregnancy outcomes in Southern Vietnam. In general, the polysulfone (PSf) membranes are popular choices for water treatment because they have high thermal stability and good chemical resistance. On the other hand, the filtration capacity of the polysulfone membrane is limited because of its low water flux and poor antifouling ability, which are caused by the low surface hydrophilicity of the membranes. In this research, blending of graphene oxide (GO) or graphene oxide-titanium dioxide (GO-TiO2) mixture into the polysulfone matrix had been carried out through the phase inversion method to enhance the hydrophilic and antifouling properties. Methods such as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and water contact angle measurement were used to examine the surface properties of the prepared membranes. Experimental results have led to a conclusion that graphene oxide can be stabilized into prepared membranes, and then, by reducing the water contact angle values, the surface of these membranes becomes hydrophilic, which increases the permeability and the water flux of methylene blue from the aqueous feed solution, improving the membrane’s antifouling resistance.

In order to develop tourism, it is impossible not to be attached to the environment, including the social-cultural and natural environment. Although identified as an important economic sector, making a great contribution to the economy, the high-speed development of the tourism industry is also creating great pressure on the environment, especially on the country’s tourist destinations. If the cultural environment guarantees civilized tourism, then the natural environment is the basis for the sustainable development of tourism. Therefore, environmental protection is being posed as a vital issue in tourism today. If you do not immediately take measures to minimize plastic waste and preserve the landscape and environment, it is likely that tourists will turn their backs on Vietnamese destinations. The article mentions a few effective solutions to develop tourism in general and tourism in Vietnam in the most effective way.

This paper reports on the design and fabrication of a z-axis tuning fork gyroscope which has a freestanding architecture. In order to improve the performance of the tuning fork gyroscope by eliminating the influence of the squeeze-film air damping, the driving and sensing parts of the gyroscope were designed to oscillate in-plane. Furthermore, by removing the substrate underneath the device, the slide-film air damping in the gap between the proof masses and the substrate was eliminated. The proposed architecture was analyzed by the finite element method using ANSYS software. The simulated frequencies of the driving and sensing modes were 9.788 and 9.761 kHz, respectively. The gyroscope was fabricated using bulk micromachining technology. The quality factor and sensitivity of the gyroscope operating in atmospheric conditions were measured to be 111.2 and 11.56 mV/°/s, respectively.

Toxoplasmosis, while often asymptomatic and prevalent as a foodborne disease, poses a considerable mortality risk for immunocompromised individuals during pregnancy. Point-of-care serological tests that detect specific IgG and IgM in patient sera are critical for disease management under limited resources. Despite many efforts to replace the T. gondii total lysate antigens (TLAs) by recombinant antigens (rAgs) in commercial kits, while IgG detection provides significant specificity and sensitivity, IgM detection remains comparatively low in sensitivity. In this study, we attempted to identify novel antigens targeting IgM in early infection, thereby establishing an IgM on-site detection kit. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) and mouse serum immunoblotting, three novel antigens, including EF1γ, PGKI, and GAP50, were indicated to target T. gondii IgM. However, rAg EF1γ was undetectable by IgM of mice sera in Western blotting verification experiments, and ELISA coated with PGKI did not eliminate cross-reactivity, in contrast to GAP50. Subsequently, the lateral flow reaction employing a strip coated with 0.3 mg/mL purified rAg GAP50 and exhibited remarkable sensitivity compared with the conventional ELISA based on tachyzoite TLA, which successfully identified IgM in mouse sera infected with tachyzoites, ranging from 10³ to 104 at 5 dpi and 104 at 7 dpi, respectively. Furthermore, by using standard T. gondii-infected human sera from WHO, the limit of detection (LOD) for the rapid fluorescence immunochromatographic test (FICT) using GAP50 was observed at 0.65 IU (international unit). These findings underline the particular immunoreactivity of GAP50, suggesting its potential as a specific biomarker for increasing the sensitivity of the FICT in IgM detection. Introduction: Using tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is recommended in the 3rd trimester for pregnant women with HBV DNA ≥ 200,000 IU/mL to prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B virus (HBV). However, HBV DNA quantification is unavailable in many resource-limited areas worldwide, hence prophylaxis is often missed. The aim of this study was to determine whether HBeAg or qHBsAg is a better alternative to HBV DNA testing in HBV-infected pregnant women. Methodology: In this prospective cohort study, pregnant women with HBV infection were recruited in 3 hospitals from October 2019 to November 2020. Socio-demographic and clinical data were collected. Blood samples were taken for qHBsAg and HBV DNA testing. HBeAg results were collected from the medical records of the participants who visited a doctor during the study. Results: 465 pregnant women met the study criteria. 41.9% were HBeAg positive, 33.3% had high qHBsAg levels (> 104 IU/mL), 38.3% had high HBV DNA levels (≥ 200,000 IU/mL). Pregnant women with high qHBsAg levels were 27 times more likely to have high HBV DNA levels (aOR = 27.0, 95% CI: 11.1-65.5, p < 0.001). Participants who were HBeAg positive were 57.5 times more likely to have high HBV DNA levels (aOR = 57.5, 95% CI: 23.0-140.0, p < 0.001). The sensitivity of qHBsAg and HBeAg was 80% and 94%, respectively; and specificity was 95% and 90%, respectively. Conclusions: HBeAg testing should be considered over qHBsAg assay as an alternative to HBV DNA assay because of its technical simplicity, lower cost, and fewer missed treatments.
