The Sparreboom's Crocodile Newt (Tylototriton sparreboomi) is a recently discovered species of crocodile newts from Vietnam and it is currently known only from Sin Ho District in Lai Chau Province. Due to the limited information available on its population status and distribution, the species has been classified as Data Deficient in the IUCN Red List. As a result of our field surveys in 2021 and 2022 in north-western Vietnam, novel data on distribution and population status of and threats to this poorly-known species were collected. We combined the newly-discovered locations with previous occurrence records and used the data as input for modelling the potential distribution of the Sparreboom's Crocodile Newt. The results showed that the Sparreboom's Crocodile Newt’s potential distribution encompasses areas in Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Son La Provinces, Vietnam, as well as a section in Jinping County, Yunnan Province, China. Based on the findings, we suggest that protected areas in the eastern side of Hoang Lien Mountain Range, such as Che Tao, Muong La, Hoang Lien – Van Ban and Bat Xat Nature Reserves and Hoang Lien National Park in Vietnam and Jinping Feishuling Nature Reserve in China be priority sites for the species conservation. Future research and conservation initiatives should prioritise efforts in such areas in an effort to find and protect new populations of the newt.

3. The effect of combining primers and cements from different cement systems on the bond strength between zirconia and dentin

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of combining primers and cements from two different resin cement systems on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) between zirconia and human dentin. Materials and methods A total of 120 specimens of zirconia cemented to dentin were allocated into eight groups based on cement type (RelyX Ultimate or Panavia V5) and primers (Tooth Primer, Clearfil Ceramic Primer and Scotchbond Universal Adhesive) combinations, applied to dentin or ceramic surfaces. Following artificial aging with 5000 thermocycles, μTBS tests were conducted. Statistical analysis was performed using One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc tests (p ≤ 0.05), and failure modes were assessed. Results The Panavia V5 cement system demonstrated the highest bond strength (19.4 ± 4.4 MPa), significantly higher than the other groups except when RelyX cement was used with Panavia primers (16.9 ± 3.7 MPa). Cohesive fractures within the cement layer were the predominant failure mode. Conclusions The combination of primers from different adhesive cement system brands may significantly affect the bonding effectiveness. Therefore, using products from a single product line of the same adhesive cement system, and following the manufacturer’s recommendations for indications and use, is crucial for a more predictable clinical outcome.

Abstract In primates, mixed species associations are not common occurrences, and have been linked to both ecological and anthropogenic factors. We present camera‐trapping records of a mixed association between two primates, the Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis) and red‐shanked douc (Pygathrix nemaeus) and discuss possible hypotheses for this occurrence. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence of such an association in the wild of these two threatened primates, and thus contributes to our limited ecological knowledge of the species.

Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

The legislation of the European Union increasingly focuses on expanding the scope of works protected by intellectual property rights, including literary works, music, films, and phonograms. The breakthrough in artificial intelligence (AI) has contributed significantly to creating works of art with little or no human intervention. The article examines the current situation of EU copyright law and Vietnamese law regarding AI-generated works. The article concludes that EU law governs copyright for these works based on the extent of human contribution to the creation of the work. Meanwhile, Vietnamese law still needs to resolve the issue of intellectual property rights for works created by AI.

Quercetin is a flavonol belonging to the flavonoid group of polyphenols. Quercetin is reported to have a variety of biological functions, including antioxidant, pigment, auxin transport inhibitor and root nodulation factor. Additionally, quercetin is known to be involved in bacterial pathogen resistance in Arabidopsis through the transcriptional increase of pathogenesis-related (PR) genes. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying how quercetin promotes pathogen resistance remain elusive. In this study, we showed that the transcriptional increases of PR genes were achieved by the monomerization and nuclear translocation of nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related proteins 1 (NPR1). Interestingly, salicylic acid (SA) was approximately 2-fold accumulated by the treatment with quercetin. Furthermore, we showed that the increase of SA biosynthesis by quercetin was induced by the transcriptional increases of typical SA biosynthesis-related genes. In conclusion, this study strongly suggests that quercetin induces bacterial pathogen resistance through the increase of SA biosynthesis in Arabidopsis.

In Viet Nam, antibiotic is an important class of drugs because infectious diseases in Viet Nam is the top ratio of infections and death. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) accounted for 82.1% of all isolates of S. aureus as the cause of death related to hospital-acquired pneumonia. Developing towards our ongoing studies of screening anti-Staphylococcus aureus activity of several local plants, we herein revealed the anti-MRSA activity of the extract of Carallia brachiata L. cultivated in Vietnam. The dilution method was performed to confirm the MIC value of fractions that contained anti-MRSA activity. The capacity of Carallia brachiata L. extract to inhibit MRSA’s hemolytic properties was determined by culturing MRSA on blood agar plates. The fractions from the ethanol Carallia brachiata L. extract were collected using liquid-liquid phase separation. According to the results, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of ethyl acetate Carallia brachiata L. extract fraction against MRSA is approximately 2.5 mg/mL. The hemolytic capacity of MRSA is inhibited by ethyl acetate Carallia brachiata L. extract fraction. The potency of anti-MRSA activity of Carallia brachiata L. extract is reported for the first time.

10. Strains and virulence genes of salmonella with multidrug resistance isolated from chicken carcasses (Hanoi, Vietnam)

Salmonella enterica is one of dangerous food-borne pathogens listed by the World Health Organization (WHO). In Vietnam, poultry is one of the most widely eaten meats and is reported as a common source of S. enterica contamination. The aim of this study was to examine multi-resistant Salmonella strains, to identify susceptibility to antibiotics by using 15 different types of medications and to perform sequencing to analyze antibiotic resistance genes, genotypes, multi-locus sequence-based typing (MLST), and plasmids. The result of the antibiotic susceptibility test indicated that phenotypic resistance to 9–11 types of antimicrobials was confirmed in all strains. Among 06 sequenced strains, we identified 43 genes associated with antibiotic resistance: strains carrying a range of genes that are associated with aminoglycoside resistance (aac(3), aac(6), ant(3), aph(3), aph(6), aadA); all strains carried blaCTX-M-55 or blaCTX-M-65 gene, which were resistant to the 3rd generation antibiotics; there were also frequently observed sul1, sul2, sul3, tet (A), qnrS1, floR, dfrA14 or dfrA27 genes in sequenced isolates. Besides, the genome sequencing also indicated that all strains carried pathogenicity islands SPI 1, SPI 2, and SPI 3 thereby creating many potential triggers of the disease. Additionally, some carried C63PI, SPI 9, SPI 13, SPI 14, and plus some plasmids such as Col156, IncHI2, IncHI2A, IncFIB, Col (MGD2).

11. Genomic analyses reveal three phylogenetic species and their evolutionary histories in the big-headed turtle

Summary: The critically endangered big-headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) is currently classified into three subspecies. However, the classification is still controversial and their evolutionary histories are still unclear. Here, multiple genetic analyses consistently revealed three phylogenetic groups with substantial genetic divergences and distinct demographic histories, suggesting three phylogenetic species (P. megacephalum, P. peguense, and Baise clade). Phylogeographical analyses revealed that the Red River plains and Guangxi basins are largely coincident with the boundaries between the three phylogenetic species, highlighting the key role of lowland areas in driving speciation in the big-headed turtle. The Baise clade is characterized by high-linkage disequilibrium but the lowest effective population size, indicating that the cryptic phylogenetic species is more vulnerable to human activities and environmental disturbance, and urgently needs more protection. Conical-shape magnetic bearings are currently a potential candidate for various magnetic force-supported applications due to their unique geometric nature reducing the number of required active magnets. However, the bearing structure places control-engineering related problems in view of underactuated and coupling phenomena. The paper proposes an Adaptive Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) for solving the above-mentioned problem in the conical magnetic bearing. At first, virtual current controls are identified to decouple the electrical sub-system, then the active disturbance rejection control is employed to eliminate coupling effects owing to rotational motions. Comprehensive simulations are provided to illustrate the control ability.

13. Professional Preparedness Implications of Workplace Violence against Medical Students in Hospitals: A Cross-Sectional Study

Workplace violence is an increasing public health concern around the world. In Vietnam, attacks on healthcare workers have become a huge issue in recent years. Our study aims to shed more light on the issue and look at what variables affect acts of violence toward healthcare workers. We conducted this cross-sectional study by surveying 550 medical students from 3 universities in Vietnam. Following this survey on SurveyMonkey’s platform (surveymonkey.com), the participants were suggested to invite their associates who met the selection criteria to join in this online survey. The structured questionnaire included demographics and details on the violence. There were 90.5% of respondents were medical students, the mean age was 23.3, and verbal abuse had a prevalence rate of 29.3%. Women respondents are less likely to suffer from violent experiences than men (OR = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.28-0.84), and those specializing in nurse and technician also faced a lower rate of acts of aggression (physical violence: OR = 0.35; 95% CI = 0.19-0.63, sexual harassment: OR = 0.36; 95% CI = 0.15-0.87, and any type of violence: OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.37-0.82). Medical students working in Ho Chi Minh City (OR = 0.55; 95% CI = 0.34-0.89), and other regions (OR = 0.40; 95% CI = 0.19-0.85) were significantly less likely to face verbal abuse than those working in Hanoi. The workplace culture needs to be changed to make sure that people feel comfortable reporting, especially those who are younger. Protecting medical students also ensures patient safety since victims of assault in the workplace can have severe aftereffects affecting their ability to provide good patient care. Hence, policies need to be implemented at both the government and hospital administration levels to keep health workers safe.

Nowadays, ensuring information security is extremely inevitable and urgent. We are also witnessing the strong development of embedded systems, IoT. As a result, research to ensure information security for embedded software is being focused. However, studies on optimizing embedded software on multi-core processors to ensure information security and increase the performance of embedded software have not received much attention. The paper proposes and develops the embedded software performance improvement method on multi-core processors based on data partitioning and asynchronous processing. Data are used globally to be retrieved by any threads. The data are divided into different partitions, and the program is also installed according to the multi-threaded model. Each thread handles a partition of the divided data. The size of each data portion is proportional to the processing speed and the cache size of the core in the multi-core processor. Threads run in parallel and do not need synchronization, but it is necessary to share a general global variable to check the executing status of the system. Our research on embedded software is based on data security, so we have tested and assessed the method with several block ciphers like AES, DES, etc., on Raspberry PI3. The average performance improvement rate achieved was 59.09%.

Abstract Sampling genetic material from rare and often secretive mammals can be difficult in challenging environments such as tropical rainforests. Large‐scale sampling is important however for resolving species' taxonomic uncertainties, as well as to help provide genetic material for reference databases that can be used with DNA forensics to combat the illegal wildlife trade. Environmental DNA (eDNA) and invertebrate‐derived DNA (iDNA) offer a promising way to overcome this sampling bottleneck, though to date e/iDNA studies have been primarily used to obtain information about species presence using barcoding or metabarcoding approaches. In this study, we collected 4,710 terrestrial leeches across six protected areas in the Annamite Mountains of Viet Nam and Laos and sequenced fragments (223–694 bp) of mt‐Cytb and/or mt‐Dcr of the mitogenomes from six species that are frequently found in the illegal wildlife trade. 16. Research on the Impact of Data Density on Memristor Crossbar Architectures in Neuromorphic Pattern Recognition

Binary memristor crossbars have great potential for use in brain-inspired neuromorphic computing. The complementary crossbar array has been proposed to perform the Exclusive-NOR function for neuromorphic pattern recognition. The single crossbar obtained by shortening the Exclusive-NOR function has more advantages in terms of power consumption, area occupancy, and fault tolerance. In this paper, we present the impact of data density on the single memristor crossbar architecture for neuromorphic image recognition. The impact of data density on the single memristor architecture is mathematically derived from the reduced formula of the Exclusive-NOR function, and then verified via circuit simulation. The complementary and single crossbar architectures are tested by using ten 32 × 32 images with different data densities of 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75. The simulation results showed that the data density of images has a negative effect on the single memristor crossbar architecture while not affecting the complementary memristor crossbar architecture. The maximum output column current produced by the single memristor crossbar array decreases as data density decreases while the complementary memristor crossbar array architecture provides stable maximum output column currents. When recognizing images with data density as low as 0.25, the maximum output column currents of the single memristor crossbar architecture is reduced four-fold compared with the maximum currents from the complementary memristor crossbar architecture. This reduction causes the Winner-take-all circuit to work incorrectly and will reduce the recognition rate of the single memristor crossbar architecture. These simulation results show that the single memristor crossbar architecture has more advantages compared with the complementary crossbar architecture when the images do have not many different densities, and none of the images have very low densities. This work also indicates that the single crossbar architecture must be improved by adding a constant term to deal with images that have low data densities. These are valuable case studies for archiving the advantages of single memristor crossbar architecture in neuromorphic computing applications.

17. DbAPE: Denoising-Based APE System for Improving English-Myanmar NMT

Automatic post-editing (APE) research aims to investigate methods for correcting systematic errors in machine translation (MT) results. Recent work has shown successful practices of APE for improving MT output quality; however, their effectiveness strongly relies on the availability of large-scale human-created APE triplets. The high production cost of human post-edited data has led to the absence of APE triplets for most language pairs, including English-Myanmar, which has become a limiting factor for the applicability of the APE task. This work investigates how to conduct the APE task on the English-Myanmar MT where human-edited APE triplets are unavailable. We build a denoising-based APE (DbAPE) system using only the monolingual and parallel MT corpora. The system takes the source sentence (src) and the MT output (mt) as inputs and produces the post-edited mt as output by operating the three processes together, including word alignment extraction, enriching mt using the extracted word alignment information, and denoising the enriched-version of mt. We conduct extensive experiments by applying our APE system as a post-processor to the raw output of the existing English-Myanmar MT systems. APE translations produced by DbAPE show statistically significant improvements of at least +4% BLEU and −16% TER points absolute over the original NMT. Moreover, DbAPE can improve the quality of the texts generated by state-of-the-art systems such as mT5 and Google Translate. In addition, we perform word alignment experiments with four types of alignment methods and demonstrate that the proposed multilingual word aligner can achieve robust performance over previous state-of-the-art models.

The rapid growth of Large Language Models (LLMs) usage has highlighted the importance of gradient-free in-context learning (ICL). However, interpreting their inner workings remains challenging. This paper introduces a novel multimodal contrastive in-context learning framework to enhance our understanding of ICL in LLMs. First, we present a contrastive learning-based interpretation of ICL in real-world settings, marking the distance of the key-value representation as the differentiator in ICL. Second, we develop an analytical framework to address biases in multimodal input formatting for real-world datasets. We demonstrate the effectiveness of ICL examples where baseline performance is poor, even when they are represented in unseen formats. Lastly, we propose an on-the-fly approach for ICL (Anchored-by-Text ICL) that demonstrates effectiveness in detecting hateful memes, a task where typical ICL struggles due to resource limitations. Extensive experiments on multimodal datasets reveal that our approach significantly improves ICL performance across various scenarios, such as challenging tasks and resource-constrained environments. Moreover, it provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of in-context learning in LLMs. Our findings have important implications for developing more interpretable, efficient, and robust multimodal AI systems, especially in challenging tasks and resource-constrained environments.

Background The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on paediatric populations varied between high-income countries (HICs) versus low-income to middle-income countries (LMICs). We sought to investigate differences in paediatric clinical outcomes and identify factors contributing to disparity between countries.Methods The International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infections Consortium (ISARIC) COVID-19 database was queried to include children under 19 years of age admitted to hospital from January 2020 to April 2021 with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis. Univariate and multivariable analysis of contributing factors for mortality were assessed by country group (HICs vs LMICs) as defined by the World Bank criteria.Results A total of 12 860 children (3819 from 21 HICs and 9041 from 15 LMICs) participated in this study. Of these, 8961 were laboratory-confirmed and 3899 suspected COVID-19 cases. About 52% of LMICs children were black, and more than 40% were infants and adolescent. Overall in-hospital mortality rate (95% CI) was 3.3% [=(3.0% to 3.6%), higher in LMICs than HICs (4.0% (3.6% to 4.4%) and 1.7% (1.3% to 2.1%), respectively). There were significant differences between country income groups in intervention profile, with higher use of antibiotics, antivirals, corticosteroids, prone positioning, high flow nasal cannula, non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation in HICs. Out of the 439 mechanically ventilated children, mortality occurred in 106 (24.1%) subjects, which was higher in LMICs than HICs (89 (43.6%) vs 17 (7.2%) respectively). Pre-existing infectious comorbidities (tuberculosis and HIV) and some complications (bacterial pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome and myocarditis) were significantly higher in LMICs compared with HICs. On multivariable analysis, LMIC as country income group was associated with increased risk of mortality (adjusted HR 4.73 (3.16 to 7.10)).Conclusion Mortality and morbidities were higher in LMICs than HICs, and it may be attributable to differences in patient demographics, complications and access to supportive and treatment modalities.

Abstract Information on geographic patterns of species genetic diversity is often needed to inform conservation strategies. Obtaining data over large geographic areas can be difficult, especially for rare or elusive species. Here, we explore the use of invertebrate‐derived DNA (iDNA) obtained from terrestrial leeches to assess genetic diversity of the Annamite striped rabbit Nesolagus timminsi, a little‐known and highly threatened lagomorph endemic to the Annamites ecoregion of Vietnam and Laos. We collected 4,877 leeches pooled into 651 leech bulk samples from eight study areas across the northern and central Annamites. Using metabarcoding, we detected Annamite striped rabbit DNA in 11 leech bulk samples from five of the study areas. We amplified up to 3,000 bp of six mitochondrial DNA loci of Annamite striped rabbit from nine of the 11 bulk samples. Haplotype network analyses showed five shared haplotypes among these samples. Phylogenetic trees constructed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference showed little geographic structuring among the Annamite striped rabbit populations across the five study areas. Our results provide information that can be directly used to inform planned ex situ conservation measures for the Annamite striped rabbit. We discuss our results within the context of using iDNA to noninvasively obtain data to assess species genetic diversity, and the potential of this approach to be applied to other species and systems.

This paper investigates the spillover effect (backward, forward, and horizontal linkage) of foreign direct investment (FDI) firms on the technical efficiency of local firms. This research extends the literature by employing meta-frontier framework analysis which is superior to single stochastic analysis because each industry has a different combination of inputs (or dissimilar production technology). Using a large data set (178,700 firm-year observations), this paper finds evidence on the negative impact of the horizontal and forward linkages on the meta-technical inefficiency for the data set as a whole as well as in three economic regions, in private owned firms, and capital and labor-intensive sectors in Vietnam.

Blockchain-based supply chain (BSC) systems have tremendously been developed recently and can play an important role in our society in the future. In this study, we develop an anomaly detection model for BSC systems. Our proposed model can detect cyber-attacks at various levels, including the network layer, consensus layer, and beyond, by analyzing only the traffic data at the network layer. To do this, we first build a BSC system at our laboratory to perform experiments and collect datasets. We then propose a novel semi-supervised DAE-MLP (Deep AutoEncoder-Multilayer Perceptron) that combines the advantages of supervised and unsupervised learning to detect anomalies in BSC systems. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our model for anomaly detection within BSCs, achieving a detection accuracy of 96.5%. Moreover, DAE-MLP can effectively detect new attacks by improving the F1-score up to 33.1% after updating the MLP component.

Decentralized applications (DApps) have gained prominence with the advent of blockchain technology, particularly Ethereum, providing trust, transparency, and traceability. However, challenges such as rising transaction costs and block confirmation delays hinder their widespread adoption. In this paper, we present our DApp named W2E - Workout to Earn, a mobile DApp incentivizing exercise through tokens and NFT awards. This application leverages the well-known ERC-20 and ERC-721 token standards of Ethereum. Additionally, we deploy W2E into various Ethereum-based networks, including Ethereum testnets, Layer 2 networks, and private networks, to survey gas efficiency and execution time. Our findings highlight the importance of network selection for DApp deployment, offering insights for developers and businesses seeking efficient blockchain solutions. This is because our experimental results are not only specific for W2E but also for other ERC-20 and ERC-721-based DApps.

Named Entity Recognition and Relation Extraction are two crucial and challenging subtasks in the field of Information Extraction. Despite the successes achieved by the traditional approaches, fundamental research questions remain open. First, most recent studies use parameter sharing for a single subtask or shared features for both two subtasks, ignoring their semantic differences. Second, information interaction mainly focuses on the two subtasks, leaving the fine-grained informtion interaction among the subtask-specific features of encoding subjects, relations, and objects unexplored. Motivated by the aforementioned limitations, we propose a novel model to jointly extract entities and relations. The main novelties are as follows: (1) We propose to decouple the feature encoding process into three parts, namely encoding subjects, encoding objects, and encoding relations. Thanks to this, we are able to use fine-grained subtask-specific features. (2) We propose novel inter-aggregation and intra-aggregation strategies to enhance the information interaction and construct individual fine-grained subtask-specific features, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms several previous state-of-the-art models. Extensive additional experiments further confirm the effectiveness of our model.

In the evaluation of magnetic field data, edge enhancement and detection techniques are important treatments for the interpretation of geological structures. In general geological sense, contiguity of deep and shallow magnetic sources leads to weak and intense anomalies that complicates the interpretation to disclose adjacent anomalous sources. Many of the existing filters for edge detection in magnetics mostly have the disadvantage that they require a reduction to pole transformation as the pre-process of the data or they cannot balance weak and intense anomalies and therefore fail in detecting edges of deep and shallow sources simultaneously. This study presents an improved edge detection filter LAS (logistic function of the analytical signal), based on the generalised logistic function configured by the ratio of derivatives of the analytical signal. This novel approach has the capability of reducing the dependence on the direction of the magnetization and also balancing anomalies of sources at different levels of depth. The feasibility of the method is examined on both theoretical and real data cases comparatively with some other methods that utilize the analytical signal in their basis. In comparison, the results demonstrate that the LAS method provides more accurate estimation of edge localization.

26. Validating the Vietnamese version of wearing – Off 19 questionnaire for patients with Parkinson's disease

Background: One of the most common complication of the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD) is the wearing off phenomenon. A validated Vietnamese version of Wearing off 19 (WO19) questionnaire is necessary to optimize the Vietnamese PD treatment. Objectives: This study was undertaken to determine the quality attribute of the questionnaire as a tool for early detection of wearing off (WO) in Vietnamese population with PD. We also sought the relationship between the WO phenomenon and factors concerning the clinical condition and course of the disease. Subjects and methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional study. Patients diagnosed with PD under dopaminergic treatment came to University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh city for a regular appointment were sequentially asked to complete the Vietnamese WO19 questionnaire. A neurologist specialized in movement disorders assessed the patient and determined whether he had experienced wearing off or not. The questionnaire results were then compared to the clinical opinion of the expert which is considered the gold standard for diagnosing wearing off. The reliability of the questionnaire is evaluated by Cronbach'α and Cohen’s kappa coefficient. The validity is measured by the sensitivity and the specificity of the instrument compared to the gold standard. The multivariate logistic regression analysis is used to learn the relations of associated factors and wearing off phenomenon. Results: 98 patients with the mean age 59.12 ± 10.99 have joined our study; 58.2% are male; and the mean disease duration is 6.32 years. The Vietnamese version of the WO19 questionnaire has a good reliability (Cronbach'α = 0.778) and the agreement with the expert assessment (the diagnostic accuracy) is at a substantial level (Kappa value = 0.618). The sensitivity and specificity of the questionnaire resulted 89.28% and 71.43% respectively. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed a long disease duration (≥6 years) (OR: 16.96; 95% CI: 2.17–132.57; p = 0.007), a high daily levodopa dosage (≥400 mg/day) (OR: 6.31; 95% CI: 1.36–29.23; p = 0.019) and high score of MDS-UPDRS part IV (≥4) (OR: 15.36; 95% CI: 2.13–110.58; p = 0.007) were independent predictive factors for wearing off in Vietnamese PD patients. Conclusions: Vietnamese – WO19 is a reliable and effective tool which should be used in clinical practice for early detecting PD patients with wearing off.

The 12 V powernet in vehicles must fulfill certain safety requirements due to the safety demand of consumers. A potential risk is undervoltage for a safety-relevant consumer, which leads to its fault. Therefore, a novel approach is presented in this study, which can predict the minimum terminal voltage for consumers. This consists of diagnostics of the wiring harness and of the lead-acid battery as well as predefined consumer currents. Using simulation, first the beginning of a drive cycle is simulated to determine the state of the powernet, and afterwards a critical driving maneuver is simulated to validate the predicted minimum terminal voltage. It demonstrates that the novel approach is able to predict a fault due to undervoltage. In addition to fulfilling safety requirements, the novel approach could be used to achieve additional availability and miniaturization of powernet components compared to the state of the art.

Ethereum 2.0 is a major upgrade to improve its scalability, throughput, and security. In this version, RANDAO is the scheme to randomly select the users who propose, confirm blocks, and get rewards. However, a vulnerability, referred to as the `Last Revealer Attack' (LRA), compromises the randomness of this scheme by introducing bias to the Random Number Generator (RNG) process. This vulnerability is first clarified again in this study. After that, we propose a Shamir's Secret Sharing (SSS)-based RANDAO scheme to mitigate the LRA. Through our analysis, the proposed method can prevent the LRA under favorable network conditions.

In recent work, P2/P3-NaNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NaNMC) was obtained by the sol-gel process followed by calcination of the precursor at 900°C for 12 h. The electrochemical properties of NaNMC were investigated in the voltage range of 2.0–4.0 V. The material exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 107 mAh·g−1 and good capacity retention of 82.2% after 100 cycles. Ex situ XRD performance showed that the P3-phase transformed from the P3- to O1-phase and vice versa, while the P2-phase remained stable during the sodium intercalation. The kinetic of sodium intercalation of NaNMC upon reversible Na+ insertion/deinsertion was evaluated via a Galvanostatic Intermittence Titration Technique (GITT) and Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The diffusion coefficients of Na+ ion deduced from the GITT curve have a broad distribution ranging from 10−10 to 10−11 cm2·s−1 for the charging/discharging process. Besides, the evolution of diffusion coefficient and charge transfer resistance is consistent with the complex phase transition generally observed in sodium layered oxides.

Introduction The Resourceful Adolescent Program (RAP) is an evidence-based resilience intervention for adolescents. Operating in a strength-focused paradigm, the programme uses an integration of cognitive behavioural therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy to improve coping skills and build resilience. This study aims to establish whether a culturally and linguistically adapted intervention informed by RAP principles is effective in increasing resilience, enhancing coping skills and preventing symptoms of depression and anxiety.Methods and analysis We will translate, back-translate and culturally adapt the RAP for adolescents and training materials for facilitators, and the adapted intervention will be called Happy House. A two-arm parallel controlled trial will be conducted in eight high schools in the north of Vietnam. In each of the selected schools, all students from four randomly selected grade 10 classes (an estimation of about 1204 students) will be invited to participate. The control group will receive the usual curriculum. The intervention group will receive six weekly 90 min school-based group sessions of Happy House in addition to the usual curriculum. The primary outcome, depressive symptoms, will be measured using a locally validated version of the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Revised. Secondary outcomes are mental well-being, coping self-efficacy, school connectedness, anger management and health risk behaviours. Data will be collected at recruitment, and at two weeks and six months post intervention. Mixed-effect logistic regression for the main outcome and mixed-effect linear and logistic regression models for the secondary outcomes will be conducted to estimate the effects of the intervention on the outcomes.Ethics and dissemination This trial has been approved by Monash University Human Research Ethics Committee (No. 21455) and the Institutional Review Board of the Hanoi School of Public Health (488/2019/YTCC-HD3). Principal component analysis (PCA) is a key tool for understanding population structure and controlling for population stratification in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). With the advent of large-scale datasets of genetic variation, there is a need for methods that can compute principal components (PCs) with scalable computational and memory requirements. We present ProPCA, a highly scalable method based on a probabilistic generative model, which computes the top PCs on genetic variation data efficiently. We applied ProPCA to compute the top five PCs on genotype data from the UK Biobank, consisting of 488,363 individuals and 146,671 SNPs, in about thirty minutes. To illustrate the utility of computing PCs in large samples, we leveraged the population structure inferred by ProPCA within White British individuals in the UK Biobank to identify several novel genome-wide signals of recent putative selection including missense mutations in RPGRIP1L and TLR4.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of reliable, noninvasive diagnostic tools for robust public health interventions. In this work, we fused magnetic respiratory sensing technology (MRST) with machine learning (ML) to create a diagnostic platform for real-time tracking and diagnosis of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. The MRST precisely captures breathing patterns through three specific breath testing protocols: normal breath, holding breath, and deep breath. We collected breath data from both COVID-19 patients and healthy subjects in Vietnam using this platform, which then served to train and validate ML models. Our evaluation encompassed multiple ML algorithms, including support vector machines and deep learning models, assessing their ability to diagnose COVID-19. Our multi-model validation methodology ensures a thorough comparison and grants the adaptability to select the most optimal model, striking a balance between diagnostic precision with model interpretability. The findings highlight the exceptional potential of our diagnostic tool in pinpointing respiratory anomalies, achieving over 90% accuracy. This innovative sensor technology can be seamlessly integrated into healthcare settings for patient monitoring, marking a significant enhancement for the healthcare infrastructure.

33. Noise and Memristance Variation Tolerance of Single Crossbar Architectures for Neuromorphic Image Recognition

We performed a comparative study on the Gaussian noise and memristance variation tolerance of three crossbar architectures, namely the complementary crossbar architecture, the twin crossbar architecture, and the single crossbar architecture, for neuromorphic image recognition and conducted an experiment to determine the performance of the single crossbar architecture for simple pattern recognition. Ten grayscale images with the size of 32 × 32 pixels were used for testing and comparing the recognition rates of the three architectures. The recognition rates of the three memristor crossbar architectures were compared to each other when the noise level of images was varied from −10 to 4 dB and the percentage of memristance variation was varied from 0% to 40%. The simulation results showed that the single crossbar architecture had the best Gaussian noise input and memristance variation tolerance in terms of recognition rate. At the signal-to-noise ratio of −10 dB, the single crossbar architecture produced a recognition rate of 91%, which was 2% and 87% higher than those of the twin crossbar architecture and the complementary crossbar architecture, respectively. When the memristance variation percentage reached 40%, the single crossbar architecture had a recognition rate as high as 67.8%, which was 1.8% and 9.8% higher than the recognition rates of the twin crossbar architecture and the complementary crossbar architecture, respectively. Finally, we carried out an experiment to determine the performance of the single crossbar architecture with a fabricated 3 × 3 memristor crossbar based on carbon fiber and aluminum film. The experiment proved successful implementation of pattern recognition with the single crossbar architecture.

In this paper, we investigate the combination of linear group precoding with a transmit antenna group selection (TA-GS) algorithm based on the channel capacity analysis for Massive MIMO systems. Simultaneously, we propose a low complexity linear precoding algorithm that works on the selected antennas. The proposed precoder is developed based on the conventional linear precoders in combination with the element-base lattice reduction shortest longest vector technique having low complexity. Numerical and simulation results show that the system performance significantly improves when the transmit selection technique is applied. Besides, the proposed precoder has remarkably lower computational complexity than its LC-RBD-LR-ZF counterpart. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed precoder can approach that of the LC-RBD-LR-ZF precoder as the number of groups increases, yet at the cost of higher detectioncomplexity.

We present our method for tackling a legal case retrieval task by introducing our method of encoding documents by summarizing them into continuous vector space via our phrase scoring framework utilizing deep neural networks. On the other hand, we explore the benefits from combining lexical features and latent features generated with neural networks. Our experiments show that lexical features and latent features generated with neural networks complement each other to improve the retrieval system performance. Furthermore, our experimental results suggest the importance of case summarization in different aspects: using provided summaries and performing encoded summarization. Amidst the rapid expansion of Machine Learning (ML) and Large Language Models (LLMs), understanding the semantics within their mechanisms is vital. Causal analyses define semantics, while gradient-based methods are essential to eXplainable AI (XAI), interpreting the model's 'black box'. Integrating these, we investigate how a model's mechanisms reveal its causal effect on evidence-based decision-making. Research indicates intersectionality - the combined impact of an individual's demographics - can be framed as an Average Treatment Effect (ATE). This paper demonstrates that hateful meme detection can be viewed as an ATE estimation using intersectionality principles, and summarized gradient-based attention scores highlight distinct behaviors of three Transformer models. We further reveal that LLM Llama-2 can discern the intersectional aspects of the detection through in-context learning and that the learning process could be explained via meta-gradient, a secondary form of gradient. This paper presents a global sensitivity analysis based strategy for uncertainty quantification of the operating revenue and the carbon dioxide emissions in a crude oil distillation column. Aspen HYSYS is used for rigorous simulation of the column. A two-stage approach, which is executed by an interface between MATLAB and HYSYS, is implemented in this study. A multiplicative dimensional reduction method is applied to first identify which factors have the most influential to the model outputs, e.g. the operating revenue and the CO2 emissions. In the second stage, the uncertainty quantification regressed by Gaussian prediction regression method is exploited. As a result, there is a good agreement between the predicted results by the Gaussian prediction regression method with that of the conventional Quasi-Monte Carlo approach, which shows that the computational efforts was reduced significantly compared to the conventional study (about less than 10 times). Furthermore, the Kernel points estimated by the Gaussian prediction regression method are generated to highlight influential factors identified in the first stage.

We describe a patient with goose-neck posture as the presenting form of cervical dystonia. In our case, the bilateral semispinalis capitis muscles were hypertrophic, thick, and overactive while both splenius capitis and sternocleidomastoid muscles were normal. In this single case experience, we demonstrated that the semispinalis capitis muscle may play a primary role in causing a goose-neck posture and the observed forward sagittal shift may be a compensatory or overflow activity of neck flexor muscles. Therefore, botulinum toxin injection to the semispinalis capitis muscles can be considered in the management of patients with goose-neck posture.

This study is devoted to the modeling and simulation of uncertainties in the constitutive elastic properties of material constituting a circular column under axial compression. To this aim, a probabilistic model dedicated to the construction of positive-definite random elasticity matrices was first used, involving two stochastic parameters: the mean value and a dispersion parameter. In order to compute the nonlinear effects between load and lateral deflection for the buckling problem of the column, a finite element framework combining a Newton-Raphson solver was developed. The finite element tool was validated by comparing the as-obtained critical buckling loads with those from Euler’s formula at zero-fluctuation of the elasticity matrix. Three levels of fluctuations of material uncertainties were then propagated through the validated finite element tool using the probabilistic method as a stochastic solver. Results showed that uncertain material properties considerably influenced the buckling behavior of columns under axial loading. The coefficient of variation of a critical buckling load over 500 realizations were 15.477%, 26.713% and 41.555% when applying dispersion parameters of 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7, respectively. The 95% confidence intervals of column buckling response were finally given. The methodology of modeling presented in this paper is a potential candidate for accounting material uncertainties with some instabilities of structural elements under compression.

We introduce efficient deep learning-based methods for legal document processing including Legal Document Retrieval and Legal Question Answering tasks in the Automated Legal Question Answering Competition (ALQAC 2022). In this competition, we achieve 1\textsuperscript{st} place in the first task and 3\textsuperscript{rd} place in the second task. Our method is based on the XLM-RoBERTa model that is pre-trained from a large amount of unlabeled corpus before fine-tuning to the specific tasks. The experimental results showed that our method works well in legal retrieval information tasks with limited labeled data. Besides, this method can be applied to other information retrieval tasks in low-resource languages.

45. Thickness and microstructure effects in the optical and electrical properties of silver thin films

The optical and electrical response of metal thin films approaching thicknesses in the range of the electron mean free path is highly affected by electronic scattering with the interfaces and defects. Here, we present a theoretical and experimental study on how thickness and microstructure affect the properties of Ag thin films. We are able to successfully model the electrical resistivity and IR optical response using a thickness dependent electronic scattering time. Remarkably, the product of electronic scattering time and resistivity remains constant regardless of the thickness (τx ρ = C), with a value of 59 ± 2 μΩ cm ⋅ fs for Ag films in the investigated range from 3 to 74 nm. Our findings enable us to develop a theoretically framework that allows calculating the optical response of metal thin films in the IR by using their measured thickness and resistivity. An excellent agreement is found between experimental measurements and predicted values. This study also shows the theoretical lower limit for emissivity in Ag thin films according to their microstructure and thickness. Application of the model presented here will allow rapid characterization of the IR optical response of metal thin films, with important application in a broad spectrum of fundamental and industrial applications, including optical coatings, low-emissivity windows and semiconductor industry.
