To overcome the limitation of dynamic reciprocity, a new method for designing broadband on-chip optical isolators is proposed and demonstrated based on saturated gain, which is able to support simplex and duplex operation modes. By connecting a saturated gain waveguide to an appropriate linear loss waveguide, broadband isolation is predicted and proved theoretically through saturated gain-induced non-reciprocal transmission. The proposed isolator is numerically demonstrated with an operating band of 59 nm and an isolation ratio of −20 dB at the central wavelength of 1550 nm. It is noteworthy that when the current pump changes, the isolator still works well and keeps the high isolation ratio at a different input power. The footprint of the whole device is 465 μm × 0.35 μm which satisfies the requirement of photonic integrated circuits. The proposed isolator, with the combined advantages of compact footprint, broadband, duplex operation and high isolation, can enable on-chip unidirectional transmission and complex topological routing designation.

In this paper, a long-range hybrid waveguide for subwavelength confinement based on double SPP coupling is proposed. The hybrid waveguide consists of a metal-based cylindrical hybrid waveguide and a silver nanowire. There are two coupling regions in the waveguide structure that enhance mode coupling. Strong mode coupling enables the waveguide to exhibit both a small effective mode area (0.01) and an extremely long transmission length (700 μm). The figure of merit (FOM) of the waveguide can be as high as 4000. In addition, the cross-sectional area of the waveguide is only 500 nm × 500 nm, allowing optical operation in the subwavelength range, which helps enhance the miniaturization of optoelectronic devices. The excellent characteristics of the hybrid waveguide make it have potential applications in photoelectric integrated systems.

Abstract Background Rumen microbial composition and functions have vital roles in feed digestion and fermentation and are linked to feed efficiency in cattle. This study selected Holstein cows, which are high in both milk protein content and milk yield, to analyse the relationship between the rumen microbiota and residual feed intake (RFI). Eighteen multiparous lactating cows were divided into low RFI (LRFI, high efficiency, n = 9) and high RFI (HRFI, low efficiency, n = 9) groups to investigate the differences in microbial composition and functions. The main objective of our current study was evaluating the effects of NFC supplementation and forage type on rumen microbiota and metabolism, by comparing microbial structures and composition among samples collected from cows fed AH (alfalfa-based diet), H-NFC (CS-based diet with high NFC) and L-NFC (CS-based diet with low NFC) diets. Our results show that microbial communities were structurally different but functionally similar among groups. When compared with L-HFC, NFC increased the population of Treponema, Ruminobacter, Selenomonas and Succinimonas that were negatively correlated with ruminal NH3-N, and urea nitrogen in blood, milk and urine, as well as significantly increasing the number of genes involved in amino acid biosynthesis. However, when compared to the AH group, H-NFC showed a higher abundance of bacteria relating to starch degradation and lactate production, but a lower abundance of bacteria utilizing pectin and other soluble fibers. This may lead to a slower proliferation of lignocellulose bacteria, such as Ruminococcus, Marvinbryantia and Syntrophococcus. Lower fibrolytic capacity in the rumen may reduce rumen rotation rate and may limit dry matter intake and milk yield in cows fed H-NFC. The enzyme activity assays further confirmed that cellulase and xylanase activity in AH were significantly higher than H-NFC. In addition, the lower cobalt content in Gramineae plants compared to legumes, might have led to the significantly down-regulated microbial genes involved in vitamin B12 biosynthesis in H-NFC compared to AH. A lower dietary supply with vitamin B12 may restrict the synthesis of milk lactose, one of the key factors influencing milk yield. In conclusion, supplementation of a CS-based diet with additional NFC was beneficial for nitrogen conversion by increasing the activity of amino acid biosynthesis in rumen microbiota in dairy cattle. However, lower levels of fibrolytic capacity may limit dry matter intake of cows fed H-NFC and may prevent increased milk yield.

Mastitis is an inflammatory disease, affects the dairy industry and has a severe economic impact. During subclinical mastitis, milk production and milk quality deteriorates. Recently, rumen microbial composition has been linked to rumen health, but few studies have investigated the effect of rumen microbiota on mammary health in cows. This study was undertaken to identify the rumen microbial composition and associated microbial fermentation in cows with different somatic cell counts (SCC), with the speculation that cows with different health statuses of the mammary gland have different rumen bacterial composition and diversity. A total of 319 Holstein dairy cows fed the same diet and under the same management were selected and divided into four groups as SCC1 (N = 175), SCC2 (N = 49), SCC3 (N = 49), and SCC4 (N = 46) with < 200,000, 200,001–500,000, 500,001–1,000,000, and >1,000,000 somatic cells/mL, respectively. Further, 20 cows with the lowest SCC and 20 cows with the highest SCC were identified. The rumen microbial composition was profiled using 16S rRNA sequencing, along with measurement of rumen fermentation parameters and milking performance. Compared to low SCC, cows with high SCC showed poorer milk yield, milk composition, and rumen volatile fatty acids concentration, but higher rumen bacterial diversity. Although the predominant rumen bacterial taxa did not vary among the SCC groups, the relative abundance of phyla SR1 and Actinobacteria, unclassified family Clostridiales and genus Butyrivibrio were significantly different. In addition, Proteobacteria and family Succinivibrionaceae were enriched in cows with low SCC. Our results suggest that specific rumen microbes are altered in cows with high SCC.

Limited lignocellulose degradation is the primary obstacle to feed digestion efficiency in ruminant animals. Low-quality forage with high levels of fibrous components can favor the proliferation of fibrolytic bacteria, but whether this can result a profound microbial shift after dietary intervention remains unclear. In this study, we monitored the microbial communities in the rumens of five ruminally cannulated Hu sheep through dietary transition from alfalfa hay (AH, pre-CS) to corn stover (CS, post-CS) and then back to AH (post-AH), with each treatment lasting for 14 days. The CS intervention significantly increased the relative abundance of microorganisms involved in lignocellulose degradation, including Fibrobacter and Treponema. When the diet was switched back to AH, the microbial community did not completely return to a pre-CS treatment state. In the post-AH microbial community, the relative abundances of Fibrobacter and Treponema were persistently high, and were similar to those in the post-CS community. Meanwhile, the diversity of the microbial community increased after dietary transition from AH to CS and remained significantly higher after transition from CS to AH compared to those under the original AH diet. Enzyme activity measurement verified significant increase of carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) and xylanase catalytic activities in the rumen. Microbial functional predictions using Tax4Fun revealed that this microbial persistence may enhance the carbohydrate metabolism pathway in the rumen. In summary, persistence of Fibrobacter and Treponema can be enhanced through a low-quality forage intervention at least for 2 weeks, which may enlighten the reprogram of microbial population in the rumen in the future.

It is well known that serum biochemical parameters and hormones contribute greatly to the physiological and metabolic status of dairy cows. However, few studies have focused on the variation of these serum parameters in multiparous mid-lactation cows without the interference of diet and management. A total of 287 Holstein dairy cows fed the same diet and maintained under the same management regime were selected from a commercial dairy farm to evaluate the effects of days-in-milk (DIM) and parity on serum biochemical parameters and hormone profiles. Milk yield and milk protein content were affected by DIM and parity (p < 0.05). Milk protein yield showed a numerically decreasing trend with parity, and it was relatively constant in cows with parities between 2 and 4 but lower in cows with parity 6 (p = 0.020). Ten and five serum biochemical parameters related to protein status, energy metabolism, liver and kidney function, and oxidative stress were affected by DIM and parity, respectively (p < 0.05). Glucagon, insulin-like growth factor 1 concentration, and the revised quantitative insulin sensitivity check index were significantly different (p < 0.05) among cows with different DIM. Parity had no effect on hormone concentrations. An interaction between DIM and parity effect was only detected for glucagon concentration (p = 0.015), which showed a significantly increasing trend with DIM and overall decreasing trend with parity. In summary, DIM and parity played an important role in affecting the serum biochemical parameters and/or hormones of dairy cows, with serum parameters affected more by DIM than parity.

We report a continuous-wave high-output power and narrow-linewidth all-fiber laser at 1550 nm with the master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration. An all-fiber distributed feedback seed laser was boosted by three cascaded fiber amplifiers. In the experiment, we adopted a large-mode-area (LMA) Er3+:Yb3+-co-doped polarization-maintaining fiber to increase nonlinear thresholds and avoided the broadening of the laser linewidth. A linear-polarization fiber laser with average output power of 20 W, linewidth of 0.88 kHz, and power jitter less than 2% was finally achieved.

Currently, kn 17 owledge on the extent to which rumen microbiota differ in a large population of cattle fed the same diet and whether such differences are associated with animal performance is limited. This study was conducted to characterize the rumen microbiota of a large cohort of lactating Holstein dairy cows (n = 334) that were fed the same diet and raised under the same environment, aiming to uncover linkages between core and pan rumen microbiomes and host phenotypes. Amplicon sequencing of the partial 16S rRNA gene identified 391 bacterial genera as the pan bacteriome and 33 genera as the core bacteriome. Inter-animal variation existed in both pan and core bacteriomes, with the effect of lactation stage being more prominent than those of parity (the number of pregnancies, ranging from 2 to 7) and sire. Spearman correlation network analysis revealed significant correlations among bacteria, rumen short chain fatty acids, and lactation performance, with the core and non-core genera accounting for 53.9 and 46.2% of the network, respectively. These suggest that the pan rumen bacteriome together with the core bacteriome potentially contributes to variations of milk production traits. Our findings provide understanding of the potential functions of non-core rumen microbes, suggesting the possibility of enhancing bacterial fermentation using strategies to manipulate core and non-core bacteriome for improved cattle performance. We demonstrate a continuous-wave high output power and narrow linewidth all-fiber master oscillator power amplifier laser at 1560 nm. The laser output power is 51.3 W with 36.38% optical-to-optical conversion efficiency and a linewidth of 0.865 kHz. The measured signal-to-noise ratio is 49 dB, and the polarization extinction ratio is greater than 20 dB. The laser can be used for high-efficiency nonlinear frequency conversion. In this paper, we obtain target information about the distance between laser sources and targets based on the linear frequency modulated laser ranging system. We designed a specific experimental scheme for the ranging of linear frequency modulated semiconductor lasers based on heterodyne ranging experiment. Ranging precision can reach micron dimension and range resolution is about 0.002 m within the range of 1–40 m. The ranging method in this paper can apply to laser radars which could be used to capture target information, which is very helpful for tracking, identifying and extracting targets.
